AC/DC Make Victorious Return With First Live Show in Seven Years

By Charisma Madarang

Charisma Madarang

AC/DC took to the stage for the first time in seven years on Saturday night of the Power Trip festival .

It was the first time lead vocalist Brian Johnson performed live with the group since September 2016 in Philadelphia, following a 79-date Rock or Bust world tour. The ill-fated trek  required the services  of Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose for the final 22 stops after Johnson bowed out with  hearing loss issues .

Saturday’s lineup also saw Matt Laug step in for drummer Phil Rudd, while longtime bassist Cliff Williams came out of retirement with Angus and Stevie Young on guitar.

AC/DC played a 24-song set and opened for the first time with “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” according to Spin . The performance also packed hits “Back in Black,” “Thunderstruck,” “Have a Drink on Me,” “Highway to Hell,” and “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Last year, Johnson told  Rolling Stone   he didn’t know if AC/DC would perform again. “I would love to,” he said. “It’s as simple as that. I think everybody would. There’s a groundswell of people just asking. But I hate talking about the future, because, fuck, we were ready two years ago, and the pandemic came, and it screwed everything up. So I’m terrified to say what could happen and what couldn’t.”

Power Trip also saw Judas Priest reunite with guitarist Glenn Tipton, who retired in 2018 due to Parkinson’s disease. The band filled in for former Black Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne, who was scheduled to headline at the festival, but withdrew due to ongoing health issues .

Setlist + Video – AC/DC Play First Show in Seven Years at Power Trip Festival

AC/DC 's first show since 2016 is officially in the books now that the rock legends have finished their set at this year's Power Trip festival , a three-day event featuring some of the biggest bands in rock and metal.

Night one (Oct. 6) featured performances from Guns N' Roses and Iron Maiden , while Judas Priest (who were added to the bill after Ozzy Osbourne backed out due to health issues) hit the stage before AC/DC on the Saturday installment.

Still to come are sets from Metallica and Tool  tonight (Oct. 8).

The last time AC/DC played live was on Sept. 20, 2016, as the group finished out the Rock or Bust Tour after encountering obstacles along the way. Singer Brian Johnson had to step down from his live role in the band as he risked suffering "total hearing loss" if he were to continue. In his place, Guns N' Roses frontman Axl Rose stepped in to help the group finish the run, the last date being Sept. 20, 2016.

While the band hadn't performed live again until now, they did release a new album,  Power Up , in 2020 with Johnson.

AC/DC Makes Triumphant Return at Power Trip: Review and Set List

AC/DC made their triumphant return to the stage on Saturday at Power Trip , commemorating their first performance in more than seven years with a few live debuts and songs not performed in decades.

You can see the full set list below.

The rockers came out swinging with the one-two punch of "If You Want Blood (You've Got It)" and "Back in Black" before debuting "Demon Fire" off 2020’s  Power Up . It was one of two live debuts from their latest album, as "Shot in the Dark" appeared later in the 24-song set.

AC/DC also broke out "Stiff Upper Lip" for the first time since 2003 (according to setlist.fm ) and busted out several songs that they hadn't performed with Brian Johnson in over a decade, including "Riff Raff" (1996), "Dog Eat Dog" (2009) and the aforementioned "If You Want Blood" (2003). The band more recently performed the last three with Axl Rose when he briefly took over for Johnson in 2016.

Watch AC/DC Perform 'If You Want Blood (You've Got It)'

Brian Johnson Made His Long-Awaited Return to the Stage

AC/DC's Power Trip performance marked their first show since Sept. 20, 2016, ending a seven-plus-year drought. But it had been even longer since they'd performed with Johnson, who was forced to bow out of the Rock or Bust tour due to hearing issues. The longtime frontman last joined his cohort onstage on Feb. 28, 2016.

The rest of the AC/DC lineup consisted of guitarists Angus and Stevie Young, bassist Cliff Williams  and drummer Matt Laug , who played in place of longtime drummer Phil Rudd .

How Did AC/DC Sound at Power Trip?

Anticipation for AC/DC's Power Trip performance was sky-high, and following  Judas Priest was no cakewalk. Nevertheless, the band rose to the occasion with a spirited two-hour-and-15-minute performance that succeeded in spite of its imperfections.

Johnson just turned 76, and returning to the stage at that age after a seven-year absence is a Herculean feat. His voice had its fair share of croaks and cracks, but he summoned the power when it counted most, supported by his bandmates' backing vocals and spurred by the ecstatic crowd. The singer wore a cheeky grin as he boogied onstage, and several times he looked to the audience with eyes wide and arms outspread, as if he, too, could hardly believe the enormity of the occasion.

Watch AC/DC Perform 'Shot in the Dark'

READ MORE: When Was AC/DC's Last Concert?

Young, meanwhile, was the same live wire as always, strutting down the catwalk and writhing atop a platform that elevated him above the stage as he ripped a furious extended solo in "Let There Be Rock." The band sounded especially hot on Bon Scott -era classics, delivering incendiary renditions of "High Voltage" and "Riff Raff." They also crushed  Back in Black album cuts like "Have a Drink on Me" and "Given the Dog a Bone." And of course, it was hard to resist the primal thrills of mega-hits like "Hells Bells," "Highway to Hell" and the (literally) explosive set closer "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)"

It's unclear what AC/DC has planned beyond Power Trip, but whether they just mounted a comeback or delivered a swan song, they did it with one-of-a-kind style and energy.

AC/DC Rock Power Trip Festival for First Show in Seven Years: Photos + Video

AC/DC played their first show in seven years on Saturday night (October 7th) at the Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The evening also featured a set by fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Judas Priest .

For this Power Trip gig, AC/DC’s lineup featured classic members Brian Johnson (vocals), Angus Young (lead guitar), and Cliff Williams (bass) alongside Stevie Young (rhythm guitar) and drummer Matt Laug.

Guns N’ Roses and Iron Maiden set the bar high at Power Trip the night before, but AC/DC were up to the challenge, showing no signs of rust as they ripped into “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It),” marking the first time they’ve ever kicked off a set with the Highway to Hell song.

From there, the 24-song set featured one classic after another, with the very next tune being the iconic “Back in Black,” followed by other favorites like “Thunderstruck,” “Hells Bells,” “You Shook Me All Night Long,” and “Highway to Hell.”

With the show being AC/DC’s first gig since the release of their 2020 album, Power Up , the band gave that LP’s “Demon Fire” and “Shot in the Dark” their live debuts. And for the encore, they went back to a couple of classics: “T.N.T.” and the set-closing “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You).”

AC/DC last performed in September 2016, with Axl Rose filling in for Johnson, who was experiencing hearing issues at the time. Last night’s show with Johnson marked his first gig with the band since February 2016.

Judas Priest had an equally daunting challenge, filling in for the originally scheduled Ozzy Osbourne, who had to drop out of the gig due to his ongoing health issues. Rob Halford and company did not disappoint, delivering an electrifying 18-song performance.

At the beginning of their set, Judas Priest surprised the audience by announcing their long-awaited new album. The band’s 19th studio LP, titled Invisible Shield , will arrive March 8th.

Kicking things off with “Electric Eye,” Judas Priest offered up such classics as “The Sentinel,” “Turbo Lover,” “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” and “Painkiller” during their main set.

After starting their encore with “Hell Bent for Leather,” Priest welcomed classic guitarist Glenn Tipton to the stage for the final three numbers: “Metal Gods,” “Breaking the Law,” and “Living After Midnight.” Tipton only plays with the band occasionally as he is battling Parkinson’s disease, so his appearance at Power Trip was a real treat for fans.

Power Trip concludes on Sunday (October 8th) with sets from Metallica and Tool.

Power Trip 2023: AC/DC rocks festival with first live show in seven years

Seven years after lead singer brian johnson stopped performing live to spare his hearing, the iconic hard rock band came together again for at least one more show..

power trip live ac dc

It had been seven years since AC/DC played a live show, but on Saturday at Power Trip, it was evident that the iconic hard rock band had little, if any, rust to shake.

AC/DC brought a ton of energy to the crowd of an estimated more than 80,000 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.

The performance came following years of speculation over whether the band would play together again. In their sixth decade making music, lead singer Brian Johnson was losing his hearing and had followed doctor’s orders to stop performing live.

The last time the group played together live was on Sept. 20, 2016, in Philadelphia, following a seven-leg, 79-date "Rock or Bust" world tour that included Gus N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose on vocals for the final 22 shows.

With longtime bassist Cliff Williams coming out of retirement, Matt Laug filling in on drums for Phil Rudd, and Angus and Stevie Young back on guitar, the band was reunited for at least one show here at Power Trip.

AC/DC went on stage promptly at 9:45 p.m., following Judas Priest, and played 25 songs until concluding at midnight. Fireworks exploded in the sky following the energetic performance.

The band opened for the first time ever with the song "If you Want Blood (You Got It)." By the fifth song, "Thunderstruck," the crowd was headbanging, dancing and singing along.

The set included all of the band’s big hits, yet also included "Demon Fire" and "Shot in the Dark" for the first time live. The two songs are from the band’s 2020 studio album "Power Up."

The band also played "Stiff Upper Lip" in a live show for the first time since 2003, and "Riff Raff" for the first time with Johnson since 1996.

The show felt like a full-circle moment, with the band playing here at Coachella in 2015, a year before AC/DC stopped touring.

Halfway through Saturday’s set, it appeared that a teenage boy sitting behind me was having a moment.

“This is the best time of my life,” the boy told his dad following "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and "Shoot to Thrill," the 10th and 11th songs of the set.

The visual effects of the set were as impressive as the vitality. When the band played "Thunderstruck," the massive video monitors behind the stage displayed a video with thunder. During "Highway to Hell," huge (graphic) flames shot up the monitors and on the stage.

Angus Young was especially animated. By the fifth song, his hat had blown off. He eventually ripped his trademark sports coat off, and not long after, his tie was gone and his shirt was unbuttoned. He played a more than 10-minute guitar solo toward the end of the set.

The band concluded its set with an encore featuring "T.N.T" and "For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)."

Fans from all across the globe made the trek to see this show. A Power Trip Facebook group drew thousands of members leading up to the festival, which included Iron Maiden and Guns N’ Roses on Friday and will conclude with Tool and Metallica Sunday. Some on the fan page said they'd traveled to Indio from as far as Brazil, Germany, Iceland, Australia, New Zealand and seemingly everywhere in between.

Many did so likely because this could be a one-time-only show by the legendary group — or it’s perhaps the start of what could be more shows still to come.

If Saturday provided any indication, this group could still put on a live show with the best of them.

We spent years speculating whether AC/DC would ever play a live show again. Hopefully we don’t have to do that again.

Review: After seven-year absence, AC/DC proves the eternal joy of a riff and a screech

Brian Johnson stood onstage at the Power Trip festival on Saturday night, two days after his 76th birthday, with the rest of AC/DC behind him for the first time in more than seven years.

In early 2016, the hard-rock band’s longtime frontman was forced off the road when doctors told him his hearing was at immediate risk; Axl Rose of Guns N’ Roses stepped in to complete the group’s Rock or Bust tour. Thanks to technology he discovered on YouTube, Johnson regained enough hearing to make 2020’s “Power Up” album, which AC/DC framed as a tribute to founding guitarist Malcolm Young, who’d died in 2017. Then COVID scotched the band’s live plans.

“How cool is this?” Johnson asked as he looked out at a crowd filled with thousands of blinking light-up devil horns. Dressed as always in black jeans and a black T-shirt, tufts of hair poking out from beneath his signature flat cap, he allowed himself a few seconds to take in the sight — one he might’ve thought he wouldn’t see again — before cuing his bandmates to crank up “Back in Black.” The riff, of course, went off like a bomb.

At Power Trip, Guns N’ Roses ditches spectacle as it polishes the messy past

Guns N’ Roses headlined the first night of this weekend’s Power Trip hard rock festival with a show that lacked spectacle and mayhem.

Oct. 7, 2023

Was this gig at Power Trip — a three-day rock fest at the Empire Polo Club that also features Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Tool — a preamble to further road work from the reactivated AC/DC? The band hasn’t said one way or the other. (In addition to Johnson, the lineup here included lead guitarist Angus Young, Young’s nephew Stevie Young on rhythm guitar, bassist Cliff Williams and the veteran session and touring drummer Matt Laug in place of Phil Rudd, who’s faced a host of legal troubles in recent years.)

Brian Johnson of AC/DC.

Yet it’s hard to see why these guys would opt not to keep playing. For one thing, those illuminated horns go for $20 a pop, to say nothing of the AC/DC T-shirts I’ve seen on what seems like every third person in the desert this weekend — not just at Power Trip but at the grocery store and the gas station and especially among the military-history enthusiasts at the Palm Springs Air Museum. On Saturday evening, the line snaking out of the festival merch tent was so long that you had to wonder if somebody was gonna miss AC/DC’s performance while waiting to buy an AC/DC hoodie.

More important, though, the band is simply still too good to hang it up; surely, the members — all in their 60s and 70s save for Laug, who’s 55 — recognize that that would constitute some kind of betrayal.

The group’s set, which lasted a little over two hours, stacked classic after classic (after classic): “Thunderstruck,” “Hells Bells,” “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap,” “Shoot to Thrill,” each delivered at deafening volume and with precisely the right blend of rawness and finesse. The Youngs sounded like they were using Brillo pads for guitar picks; Williams and Laug kept the grooves so square that somehow they were funky. Johnson’s voice, meanwhile, was a ruined screech, his words all but unintelligible — just the way you wanted it, not least when he voiced some horrifying idea about women’s bodies.

AC/DC's Angus Young at Power Trip.

For visuals, the band had a giant wall of Marshall amplifiers and it had Angus Young, who duck-walked in his schoolboy uniform until he evidently got too hot for a jacket and tie; the guitarist spent the latter half of the show with his shirt open like the world’s swinging-est granddad at work on his old pickup. (Second-best look of the night came from Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, who opened his band’s set earlier Saturday in a silver jacket that evoked one of those crinkly trauma blankets.)

Naturally, AC/DC saved some of its biggest hits for near the end of the concert, and every time the band revved one of those indelible riffs — as in “You Shook Me All Night Long,” for instance, or “Highway to Hell” — you couldn’t believe you’d already heard so many all-timers without hearing this one. The show displayed absolutely no development of the group’s music because development is not what this group is about.

The whole point of AC/DC, which formed in 1973, is that the members stripped away everything unnecessary from rock music and found enough left to explore for half a century.

Half a century and then some, they made you hope on Saturday.

AC/DC have announced that they will be playing live for the first time since 2016, after the final line up for Power Trip Festival was confirmed this morning.

  • READ MORE: Guns N’ Roses to release limited-edition ‘London 1991’ CD

Despite the band releasing a new album, Power Up , in 2020, this will be the first time they have played live together in seven years, and the first since guitarist Malcolm Young passed away in 2017. Young was forced to retire from touring due to ill health in 2014, and was joined in retirement by vocalist Brian Johnson in 2016, who was advised by doctors to retire mid-tour due to hearing damage – he was replaced for the rest of the tour by Axl Rose.

Happily, however, Johnson will likely be able to return to the stage with AC/DC for the Power Trip performance thanks to a new type of in-ear monitor that will protect his damaged hearing while he fronts one of rock’s most enduringly popular bands.

Young’s nephew Stevie replaced Malcolm following his retirement and will join the returning Phil Rudd on drums, alongside the ever-present and seemingly indefatigable Angus Young on lead guitar.

Alongside AC/DC the Power Trip Festival will see performances from Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne, who announced he would be performing this week just months after retiring from touring due to ongoing health problems.

Tickets for the three-day rock festival, which take place in the Coachella festival grounds, are set for release on 6 April at 10am Pacific Time. There are also a variety of hotel and VIP packages to choose from.

This is not the first time that some of the star-studded line up have been on the same bill – Metallica did a co-headline tour with Guns N’ Roses back in 1992.

AC/DC has not yet scheduled any future performances, but considering the whole band is performing for this one show, it would be unsurprising if they had more planned in the future.

AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Tool and Ozzy Osbourne release teaser videos for PowerTrip festival

It looks like a sequel to The Desert Trip is coming, and it promises to be a lot louder

PowerTrip logo

AC/DC , Guns N' Roses , Metallica , Iron Maiden , Tool and Ozzy Osbourne have released teaser videos for a mysterious entity called PowerTrip.

The videos, each launched with the accompanying text. "Are you ready for a PowerTrip?" feature a stop-motion animation of a flyer being designed, alongside the text "Calling all headbangers", and the name of a possible venue (Brooke's Desert Gardens - Metal Basin Wilderness). Four of the clips finish with a power chord, while the AC/DC video ends with a short burst of Back In Black, and the Guns N' Roses video climaxes with a snippet of Welcome To The Jungle.

A number of online properties have also been launched, including a website (which promises that more information will arrive on March 30, and allows fans to sign up for further information) and accounts on Facebook , Instagram , Twitter and TikTok .

The official website is credited to Goldenvoice – the company set up by Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett – who were responsible for The Desert Trip, the 2016 festival that featured the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Roger Waters and The Who, and took place at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

According to Los Angeles-based webzine The SceneStar , a "sequel" to The Desert Trip will be held to the Polo Club between Friday October 6, to Sunday October 8, which is the same weekend at the Aftershock Festival in Sacramento, CA. Details of the Aftershock lineup were announced last week, with a bill headlined by Guns N’ Roses, Tool, Avenged Sevenfold and Korn.

AC/DC haven't played live since finishing the Rock or Bust World Tour in Philadelphia, PA, in September 2016, while Ozzy Osbourne – who retired from touring in February but suggested he would be open to performing at one-off events – last played a full set at Ozzfest in December 2018.

Note: this story has been updated to reflect Tool's and Guns N' Roses' release of PowerTrip teaser videos.

Those About to Rock: Check Out the First Photo of AC/DC’s New Touring Lineup

by Matt Friedlander May 10, 2024, 1:25 pm

AC/DC has debuted the first photo of the band’s new touring lineup in advance of the start of the rock legends’ impending 2024 European trek in support of its 2020 album Power Up .

Videos by American Songwriter

The pic, which was posted on AC/DC’s official website and social media pages , shows guitarist Angus Young with his back to the camera facing new touring drummer Matt Laug, and flanked by his cousin, guitarist Stevie Young, and new touring bassist Chris Chaney. Singer Brian Johnson is off to the side, and also is facing away from the camera, while looking toward Angus.

[Buy AC/DC Concert Tickets]

The photo is accompanied by a message that reads, “In the studio, gearing up for the [Power Up Tour] kicking off in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, in just one week!”

AC/DC’s most recent concert took place on October 7, 2023, as part of the Power Trip festival in Indio, California. The show, which was AC/DC’s first concert since the end of their Rock or Bust tour in 2016, featured Johnson, Angus and Stevie Young, Laug, and longtime bassist Cliff Williams.

On Laug Replacing Phil Rudd

Power Trip was Laug’s first-ever show with the band. Laug also is a member of Tom Petty guitarist Mike Campbell’s current group The Dirty Knobs, and has recorded and/or played with Alanis Morissette, Alice Cooper, and Slash’s Snakepit as well.

AC/DC’s longtime drummer Phil Rudd played on Power Up , but the group hasn’t explained why he didn’t join them at the Power Trip gig or why he isn’t taking part in the new tour. That being said, Rudd was replaced by former AC/DC drummer Chris Slade for the band’s Rock or Bust tour because of Phil’s legal issues.

On Chaney Replacing Cliff Williams

Williams, who joined AC/DC in 1977, initially announced his retirement at after the Rock or Bust Tour but also played on Power Up . It appears that his performance at the Power Trip show will be his last with the band.

In February, AC/DC announced that Chaney had been hired “to carry the torch for Cliff” on the new tour. Chaney had previously been a member of Jane’s Addiction for many years. He also had played in Morissette’s touring and recording band for six years, and was a member of the late Foo Fighters’ drummer Taylor Hawkins’ group Coattail Riders.

On Johnson’s Return to AC/DC After Hearing Issues

Hearing issues forced Johnson to exit AC/DC’s Rock or Bust Tour early, and the band hired Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose to finish the trek. Johnson returned to the group to record Power Up , and special inner-ear monitors were developed that allowed him to once again tour with the band.

About AC/DC’s 2024 Tour

As previously reported, AC/DC’s 2024 tour kicks off with a 24-date European leg. The trek begins with a May 17 show in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and runs through an August 17 concert in Dublin, Ireland. No other dates have been announced yet.

Tickets for AC/DC’s shows are on sale now via various outlets, including StubHub .

See First Photo Of AC/DC's New Touring Lineup

AC/DC has shared the first photo of the band's new touring lineup, featuring singer Brian Johnson , guitarists Angus and Stevie Young , drummer Matt Laug and the latest addition to the group's touring lineup, bassist Chris Chaney . You can see it below.

The legendary hard rock act's 24-date "Power Up" European tour will kick off all on May 17 at Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen, Germany and run through August. The trek will hit Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria and Switzerland before landing at London's Wembley Stadium for a pair of shows on July 3 and 7, then moving on to Germany, Slovakia and Paris and winding down at Croke Park in Dublin, Ireland. The European tour is the first run of gigs since AC/DC 's return to the stage at last year's rock Power Trip festival in Indio, California.

AC/DC 's last tour took place in 2015 and 2016 and had a $180 million gross, with 2,310,061 sold tickets reported to the Pollstar box office.

Laug is an American drummer who has played with many bands/artists such as Alanis Morissette , Alice Cooper , SLASH'S SNAKEPIT and Vasco Rossi . Matt moved to Los Angeles after graduating from South Florence High School in 1986 and after attending college in L.A., Matt became a sought-after studio drummer.

In 2001, Laug supported AC/DC as part of SLASH'S SNAKEPIT on the North American and European legs of the "Stiff Upper Lip" tour.

In its announcement about Laug 's addition to the band's Power Trip lineup, AC/DC offered no explanation for the absence of the band's longtime drummer Phil Rudd , who rejoined AC/DC for the recording of the group's comeback album, "Power Up" , which came out in November 2020.

Rudd was ousted from AC/DC when he was sentenced to eight months of home detention by a New Zealand court in 2015 after pleading guilty to charges of threatening to kill and drug possession. He was replaced on the band's "Rock Or Bust" tour by Chris Slade , who had previously served as AC/DC 's drummer between 1989 and 1994, playing on the album "The Razor's Edge" .

Rudd , who appeared on all but three of AC/DC 's 18 previous studio albums, toured in support of his 2014 solo debut, "Head Job" . It was the release of that album that led indirectly to Rudd 's arrest, with the drummer allegedly so angry at a personal assistant over the way the record was promoted that he threatened to have the man and his daughter killed.

AC/DC postponed the last 10 dates of its spring 2016 North American trek after Johnson was advised to stop playing live or "risk total hearing loss." The band went on to complete the European and North American legs of its "Rock Or Bust" tour with GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose as a "guest vocalist." At the time, Johnson had been AC/DC 's singer for 36 years, ever since replacing the late Bon Scott in 1980 and making his debut on the classic "Back In Black" album.

To enable him to perform live with AC/DC again, the now-76-year-old Johnson worked with audio expert Stephen Ambrose , who said he could help resolve the singer's hearing problems.

Ambrose , who invented the wireless in-ear monitors that are widely used by touring artists today, claimed to have invented a new type of ear-bud that would allow Johnson to perform without causing further damage to his eardrums. After three years of experimenting and "miniaturizing" the equipment, Johnson previously said the technology could allow him to tour again.

Chaney is best known as the bassist of JANE'S ADDICTION and as a member of Alanis Morissette 's touring and recording band. Chaney was also a member of TAYLOR HAWKINS AND THE COATTAIL RIDERS and CAMP FREDDY , as well as being a prolific and versatile session musician, having played with artists including Joe Cocker , Shakira , Slash and Avril Lavigne to Sara Bareilles , Gavin Degraw , Cher , SHINEDOWN and Celine Dion . Chaney is also a founding member and partner in the all-star supergroup ROYAL MACHINES along with Dave Navarro ( JANE'S ADDICTION ), Mark McGrath ( SUGAR RAY ), Josh Freese ( FOO FIGHTERS ) and Billy Morrison ( BILLY IDOL ).

Bassist Cliff Williams announced his retirement at the end of AC/DC 's 2015-2016 "Rock Or Bust" tour, which also saw Johnson leaving. However, Williams — and Johnson — took part in the recording sessions that resulted in "Power Up" . Both of them were also part of the AC/DC lineup that performed at Power Trip .

During an October 2020 interview with Dean Delray 's "Let There Be Talk" podcast, Cliff was asked if Johnson 's departure from the road was what led to his desire to stop touring. Cliff responded: "It was before then. I spoke to Angus about it initially. I was at a point — and this is at the beginning of the 'Rock Or Bust' tour — that I just felt, for me, it was time to hang it up. I knew that I didn't wanna keep doing these two-year tours, and I didn't wanna hold them back, so I made them aware of the fact that this was gonna be my last go-round. It was a tough tour to finish. God bless Axl for coming in and helping us out, finish it up. He did a great job. And at the end of that, I was definitely — that was it for me. Done — just done. That compounded the whole thing."

According to Williams , he wanted to take part in the recording sessions for "Power Up" as a tribute to Angus 's late brother, founding AC/DC rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , who died in 2017 from effects of dementia at age 64. Malcolm is credited as a writer on all 12 tracks on "Power Up" .

"If 'Back In Black' has [late AC/DC singer] Bon Scott all over it, for me, 'Power Up' has got Malcolm Young ," Cliff said. "This is for him. And it's the band that we played together with for 40-plus years. And I wanted to do that — I wanted to come back and do that.

"We did some rehearsals earlier [in 2020] before this darn COVID thing popped up, and we had great rehearsals," he continued. "The band was playing really well. So [they asked me], 'Do you wanna do a few shows? 'Sure'. A few shows. We were planning on doing that. Everyone goes home to their respective homes, and bang, we've been here ever since [because of the coronavirus-related shutdown]."

Cliff went on to confirm that his commitment to AC/DC was only for "a few" dates in support of "Power Up" .

"For both [my mental and physical] health," he said. "I definitely have some physical issues, which I won't bore you with the details of. But, yeah, it's tough. I'm very grateful for everything. It's been fantastic. But I just don't wanna do that anymore."

Williams previously revealed that a "terrible" bout with vertigo contributed to his 2016 retirement. He also admitted the return of both Johnson and drummer Phil Rudd convinced him to rejoin the group. "It was like the old band back together," he told Rolling Stone . "It was not like starting over again, but as close to the band that's been together for 40-plus years as we can possibly make it. I didn't want to miss that."

The follow-up to 2014's "Rock Or Bust" , "Power Up" was recorded over a six-week period in August and September 2018 at Warehouse Studios in Vancouver with producer Brendan O'Brien , who also worked 2008's "Black Ice" and "Rock Or Bust" .

AC/DC in Gelsenkirchen: Tickets, Setlist, Anfahrt, Wetter

Am freitag (17. mai) startet die band ihre „power up“-europatour in gelsenkirchen. alles, was man wissen muss, haben wir hier zusammengefasst..

Großer Tourauftakt in Gelsenkirchen: Am Freitag (17.

In den Abend starteten die Australier mit „If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)“. Diesen Song hat die Band zuvor noch nie als Opener eines Konzertes gespielt. Direkt danach gibt es einen Klassiker auf die Ohren: „Back to Black“. Die Zugabe fĂ€llt mit zwei Songs, „T.N.T“ und „For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)“ etwas spĂ€rlich aus – doch das ist bei einer ĂŒber zweistĂŒndigen Show auch zu verzeihen.

Das war die Setlist beim Power Trip Festival:

  • If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)
  • Back in Black
  • Shot Down in Flames
  • Thunderstruck
  • Have a Drink on Me
  • Hells Bells
  • Shot in the Dark
  • Stiff Upper Lip
  • Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
  • Shoot to Thrill
  • Givin the Dog a Bone
  • Rock ’n‘ Roll Train

  • Dog Eat Dog
  • High Voltage
  • Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be
  • Highway to Hell
  • Whole Lotta Rosie
  • Let There Be Rock
  • For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)
