Princess cruise dining FAQ

princess cruise dining reservations

Is food on Princess Cruises included?

Sit-down meals in the main dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, are always included on a Princess cruise, and the menu varies somewhat daily. Also included is a buffet, either called World Fresh Marketplace or Horizon Court, depending on the ship, as well as fast casual and grab-and-go spots on board that serve pizza, tacos, burgers, pastries and ice cream.

Specialty restaurants including Crown Grill, Princess's steak and seafood house, and Sabatini's, the signature Italian restaurant, require a surcharge that's priced at a flat rate per adult or child; some menu items also require an additional surcharge no matter the age of the guest.

Related: The ultimate guide to Princess Cruises ships and itineraries

Are drinks included on Princess cruise ships?

Select beverages are always included: iced tea, hot tea, brewed coffee, hot chocolate, milk, fruit juice, lemonade and tap water. Everything else, including soft drinks, wine, beer, cocktails, spirits and specialty coffees, must either be purchased a la carte or through one of the cruise line's beverage packages .

Do I need reservations?

Reservations are encouraged for the main dining room and the specialty restaurants, and it's best to make them as early as possible ; walk-in parties will be accommodated on a space-available basis. Guests can make reservations via the Princess MedallionClass app or at guest services once you're on board. If you wish to eat at the same time every night, you can do so by reserving your tables in advance.

Platinum and Elite Captain's Circle members have early access to reservations. Passengers booked in a Full Suite or Reserve Collection Mini-Suite don't need to make dining reservations as they will always be accommodated; they also have access to a dedicated space in the main dining room with expedited seating and an expanded menu.

Does Princess Cruises have an evening dress code?

"Smart casual" attire will be appropriate for the main dining room, buffet and fast-casual restaurants. You might want to pack something dressier for the specialty restaurants or one of the more upscale dining experiences like Chef's Table, 360 or a winemaker dinner.

On sailings that are five nights or longer, there will be one or more formal nights, which do require adhering to a dress code in the dining venues . Cocktail dresses, evening gowns or dressy pantsuits are appropriate for women, while dark suits, tuxedos or dinner jackets and slacks are required for men , along with dressy footwear. If you don't want to dress up or forgot appropriate attire, you're welcome to dine at the buffet or any of the other casual dining options on board during formal night.

Is there assigned seating in the main dining room?

There is no assigned seating at any dining venues on board Princess ships. However, if you are a solo diner or part of a couple or small group, your host might ask if you would like to sit with another party of a similar size in the main dining room; the choice is up to you.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

You can use the Cruise Personalizer to indicate your dietary preferences, including requests for low-sodium, low-fat, low-sugar and vegetarian diets. Kosher meals and baby food are available with advanced written requests. If you have allergies or medical needs related to food, you must inform Princess in writing — check the line's website for more details. Princess Cruises also recently introduced a series of vegan menus for dinner in the main dining room, including starters, soups, salads, pastas and main dishes.

Where can I get snacks on board?

princess cruise dining reservations

You'll find lots of spots to grab a quick bite, dessert or coffee, including Coffee & Cones, Patisserie, Swirls Ice Cream Bar, The Pastry Shop, International Cafe and Gelateria — options vary depending on the ship. Food at these venues is included, but there is a charge for specialty coffees and teas unless you have a beverage package.

Is room service included on Princess Cruises?

Guests can use the designated button on their cabin's phone to order room service 24 hours a day; each order incurs a $5 delivery fee, which is waived for those with Princess Plus or Princess Premier status.

You can also use the OceanNow feature in the Princess Medallion Class app to order food to be delivered to your cabin or anywhere else on the ship, like the pool deck. This feature is included with Princess Plus and Princess Premium; otherwise, there is a one-time access fee of $14.99 per person per voyage and a $5 delivery fee per order. Food and beverage surcharges may apply for some items ordered via room service.

How to plan and personalize your dining on a Princess cruise

How to plan and personalize your dining on a Princess cruise

CRUISE TIPS: Princess Cruises unveiled Dine  My Way , another flexible MedallionClass enhancement that makes it easy for guests to pre-plan and tailor their dining experiences. It pairs with the revolutionary OceanNow   on demand service to offer onboard dining flexibility and convenience.

Sky Princess Main Dining Room

Dine  My Way  gives guests the freedom to make reservations in onboard dining rooms and specialty restaurants at times they prefer and with whom they wish to dine.

Sky Princess LeMer

Dine  My Way  also helps to optimize capacities in dining rooms and restaurants on board, manage wait times, and gives guests significantly more flexibility.

When making a reservation, guests will be able to:

  • add additional friends or family members with whom they are traveling
  • select their preferred pace of dining (relaxed, quick)
  • indicate their desired seating location (near window, close to entrance) in the Ocean profile
  • share dietary preferences and allergen information
  • pick the same venue and dining time each night

Princess Cruises Regal Princess cruise ship bow

“We believe guests are going to love the control and customization Dine My Way offers,” said  Jan Swartz , Princess Cruises president. “Instead of restricting dining choices during the pandemic, we’ve been able to expand the options for our guests and thanks to the unique, innovative capabilities of the OceanMedallion, reduce wait times and eliminate the need to stand in line.”

In addition, Princess’ OceanNow on-demand menu has been expanded to include entrees and beverage options from restaurants through-out the ship with guest’s requests delivered directly to their location.

OceanNow orders can be made using the MedallionClass app on a smart device, via the stateroom TV, or by having a crew member place the order on the guest’s behalf.

OceanNow will also include many expanded personalization options so you can order your perfect coffee drink, select your favorite steak sauce toppings, or pizza condiments providing more customization than ever.

“Guests have always appreciated the convenience of OceanNow, and because the pandemic has expanded people’s use of ‘on-demand’ direct delivery services, we think even more guests will embrace the ability to order what they desire and have it delivered to them wherever they are on board,” notes Mario Siebaldi, Princess Cruises senior vice president of Guest Experience. “It not only prevents unnecessary queuing, more importantly it elevates the guest experience.”

Princess MedallionClass vacations are enabled by the award-winning OceanMedallion, a wearable device that pairs with IoT-driven innovation to significantly enhance and personalize the guest experience.

In addition to service on demand, Princess MedallionClass Vacations are also marked by touchless embarkation and disembarkation, frictionless commerce, and keyless stateroom entry. Additional contactless capabilities accessible using smart phones and tablets include way-finding; family and friends locator; and interactive fun.

We're on a March cruise in a few months. We have had our specialty restaurants reserved, and paid for, for at least three months now. These are special events - a birthday and later an anniversary - so we wanted to get exactly the venue, date and time we wanted so we booked well in advance.

What no one has asked you so far - and you did not indicate this - are you Platinum or Elite?  Or did you book a Suite?  If you are not those CC Member Levels, then you cannot make dining reservations until you have made Final Payment.  Otherwise, you should be able to make bookings as soon as a deposit is applied.

You are too funny!  Quit fooling around and get the MedallionNet fixed on the App for our cruises. 😂

Well, I started a new post to just find out when I can book.  I only sailed once on Princess.  If it matters, as noted above, I booked Premiere Plus so I get two sets of two Specialty Dining.  My final payment will probably be due mid-February if that helps?

Yes, that is very important.  You can book your SD after you make final payment.

Anytime if you are Elite, Platinum or a suite guest.

Is this only to use the complimentary SDs? We were able to make our SD reservations 8 months out and we are at the lowest tier with only one cruise so far. The charges showed up on our credit card statement within a couple of days.

This is a complimentary SD using a credit, which is given if you buy the Premier Plus package.

Our cruise is in early December and is fully paid.  We are Platinum and booked in a full suite.  Whenever I go on to the Medallion app, I get a message that reads, "Please check back closer to your journey date to use this feature."  It appears that Princess is very inconsistent in when to allow passengers to book specialty dining.  Our cruise appears to be close to full and I do not want to miss out on our promotional specialty dining.  Will keep checking.

The Mikado

It’s amazing that our app says the same thing yet all the desirable times for specialty dining are taken.

We cruise October 1st.

I cannot see what specialty dining is even on the ship.  Frustrating to say the least.

I think you get that message when your app isn't working correctly. Some have no issue, others can't book dining at all.

Try it on the website version of DMW.

Your concierge will book it for you when you get OB also, so don’t worry about it.

You don’t book the MDR on there, because you will be in the Club Class DR.

cruisepest

We also had the same thing happen with our cruise in November. Once we were in the green lane on the Princess app we could then book our specialty dinning.

I'm ruby, not fully paid and was able to book specialty dining for next February. For once the app inconsistency was in my favour!

Was able to book SD for our Alaska cruise next May.  AND, was able to use the complimentary dining credits for us and our 2 friends who are traveling with us ( separate cabin).  We are paid in full and booked the premier package.

Realized it was me and my ignorance of the Medallion app which was preventing me from booking specialty restaurant reservations.   So, if this helps anyone, this is my step-by-step to booking.

*Click on the dining icon on the app (picture of a clock, plate & dining utensils).  This loads the Dine My Way page.

*Click on the second choice: View or book individual daily reservations.  This brings up each day of the cruise along the top.

*Select which day you are booking the reservation by scrolling along the top and clicking the day you desire.

*Click on the block entitled:  Evening:  Add Reservation

*Click on which guests to add.

*Click on Continue.  This brings up the specialty restaurants eligible for reservations.

*Click on the Select time and then scroll to the time you want to dine and click on it.

*Click on Select this Table under the restaurant you want to book.  If this does not show up on your restaurant of choice, no reservations are available at that time.

Once you select the restaurant and time, the app asks for a credit card for payment.

There are still a lot of choices for our cruise thank goodness.

How did you book that?  For example, if you have friends as Travel Companions and add them to Dining Party and book four into SD, the payment page is going to use your credits and not theirs.

Here’s Where the New Sun Princess Shines and Falls Short

We are back from sailing on the new Sun Princess, and in our exclusive first look, we share where this mega-ship shines and where she falls short.

Sun Princess Shines

Share this post:

Five days is not enough time to eat, drink, and discover everything onboard a new ship, especially when this new ship is now the largest in the Princess Cruises fleet . But Heidi and I did our best to experience everything we could on the new Sun Princess. We are back and share our first impressions of where Sun Princess shines and where this new vessel falls short.

Our First Impressions of Sun Princess

Where sun princess shined:, standard balcony cabin.

Princess Cruises finally listened to its loyal cruisers. On Sun Princess, the entry-level balcony cabins are deluxe balcony cabins , which means more room, storage, and a sofa.

We appreciated the new layout and decor, which puts the cabin on par with similar staterooms on other new mega ships like Celebrity Ascent or Norwegian Prima . This reconfiguration does mean that there is no longer a walk-in closet, which did benefit us over-packers on other Princess ships. Still, this new closet design provided more than enough storage with a combination of shelves, drawers, and a clothes bar.

Where Sun Princess Shines and Fell Short

These cabins also have a new and improved bathroom, with modern finishes and a brand-new shower design. This square shower setup features a glass door and no more shower curtain! These new bathrooms also feature marble finishes and premium bath products including hand soap. The only odd feature was that the bath towels were stored under the sink and behind the shower door.

Inside the stateroom, the muted color palette and light wood tones complement the upscale dĂŠcor found around the rest of the ship. And the signature Princess luxury bed provided all the comforts of home. Not to mention, there’s also a new Dry Bar hair dryer in all cabins.

Overall, the 236-square-foot cabin had all the features and amenities you would expect to find in any modern cruise ship cabin. There were also several power connections throughout the cabin. In fact, there are a USB-A, USB-C, and a power outlet on each side of the bed, which is the most we’ve seen on any ship. A similar setup exists at the desk as well.

So, we were pleasantly surprised by our accommodation for this Mediterranean cruise .

Welcoming Piazza

Sun Princess continues the trend in mega-ship design, offering upscale finishes with clean and minimalistic modern decor.

The 9-story Sphere in the ship’s center allows for more natural light and a more inviting Piazza. This three-story staple of most Princess Cruises ships feels spacious and warm on Sun Princess. The floor-to-ceiling glass offers amazing ocean views on all three decks, and even includes the SeaWalk on Deck 9 on the starboard side.

princess cruise dining reservations

Popular venues, like the Crooners Bar and Bellini’s, offer seating surrounding the Piazza. It’s almost like having al fresco seating on an interior deck. Plus, the International CafĂŠ and Alfredo’s Pizzeria seamless blend into this central hub of activity.

Further, the new Piazza still features several events, parties, and live music throughout the cruise. With terraced seats, there are decent sight lines on all three decks. So, cruisers can now enjoy activities like 80s parties, rock parties, or other Piazza entertainment from all angles.

Yet, those just walking through from one end of the ship to the other can still bypass the crowds. That is if they are not sucked into the fun happening down on Deck 7.

The rest of the ship continues the trend with light beechwood tones and soft materials in the public spaces as well. For example, Princess Live is light with colorful chairs that make it feel homier than its counterparts on the Royal Class. And The Shops walkway is paved in marble, reflecting light for a luxurious feel.

This is in contrast to many other ships in the Princess fleet which feature dark woods and tacky accents reminiscent of your grandmother’s house.

Specialty Dining

Princess Cruises’ Crown Grill is one of the best steakhouses at sea, so we are happy to report that the venue is back on Sun Princess with elevated design and decor but the same great menu. There’s also The Catch by Rudi , a seafood restaurant that launched in 2022 with great success. The fan favorite Sabatini’s Italian restaurant also makes an appearance on Sun Princess with a beautiful redesign.

However, Sun Princess welcomed several new dining venues to the fleet as well. We tested two of them and think they are great additions to the dining lineup.

princess cruise dining reservations

While not new to cruise ships, Umai Teppanyaki is new to Princess Cruises . As fans of these Japanese-style steakhouses, we can confirm that this version at sea is just as delicious and entertaining.

Offering a four-course menu with plenty of utensil-spinning, sizzling, and singing, this Deck 8 restaurant is a perfect addition to this family-focused mega-ship. What’s unique is that Umai also features a hot pot experience.

With six tables lining the venue, this cooking approach allows guests to prepare their own Asian-inspired delicacies. With boiling broth, cruisers combine veggies, meat, and noodles for a filling and fun communal meal. Our friends vouch that it was top-notch as well.

On Deck 9 aft is the Butcher’s Block by Dario. In partnership with “the world’s most famous butcher”, this family-style feast is a carnivore’s dream. The 8-course meal features several signature cuts of beef, including a tender and delicious tomahawk and t-bone. There is also a vegetarian option, but everyone gets a slice of the light and airy olive oil cake for dessert.

While I did enjoy this meal, it was almost too meat-focused even for me. I would have appreciated one or two courses from the vegetarian menu that Heidi had to break it up a bit.

On Sun Princess, all specialty dining is $45 a person and $22.50 for kids under 12. Cruisers with the Princess Premier Package can redeem specialty restaurant credits at all restaurants.

Like any specialty restaurant, we highly suggest making reservations pre-cruise so you don’t miss out.

All cruise lines are introducing exclusive, intimate onboard activities. Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas has the Empire Supper Club , and Princess Cruises offers the unique 360: An Extraordinary Experience on Discovery Princess and Enchanted Princess.

New for Sun Princess is the magical Spellbound. In partnership with Magic Castle , this immersive and mystifying evening is open to only 90 guests each night. The experience includes a special dinner in a reserved section of the main dining room and entrance through the oddly out-of-place black door found midship on Deck 8.

princess cruise dining reservations

We won’t spoil all the fun, but behind that innocent-looking door is perhaps one of the best-themed, interactive experiences at sea. Spellbound’s level of immersion, attention to detail, and storytelling rivals any Disney attraction.

With a backstory tied to the actual Magic Castle in LA , an evening at Spellbound includes unique cocktails, illusions, sleight of hand, and even a potential ghost sighting. The attention to detail is remarkable, with the room itself coming to life. Not to mention, some of the best cocktails on the ship can be found only at the Spellbound bar.

All of this magic and mystery costs $149 per person. But given that cruisers can come and go from the venue for the entire night, it is well worth the price tag in our opinion.

Three-Story Main Dining Room

All Princess cruise ships boast several complimentary main dining rooms . However, Princess Cruises reimagined this dining experience on Sun Princess with the new Horizons dining room. We are fans of the new layout spanning three decks with stunning aft views and a three-story sculpture.

Aside from the dining rooms being combined into one multi-story venue on Sun Princess, each deck does offer a different dining setup.

Where Sun Princess Shines and Fell Short

The two-story Horizons restaurant is located on Decks 6 and 7. Located all the way aft of the ship, this terraced main dining room is more grand and offers fantastic wake views. While slightly different on each deck, the furnishings and decor make this venue feel more elegant than the counterparts on other Princess Cruises ships.

The largest of the three dining rooms is on Deck 6. This restaurant is reserved for guests who prefer traditional dining. The dining times on our 10-night Mediterranean cruise were 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM.

Guests can also opt for flexible dining, where they can make reservations in the app between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. These guests will be seated on Deck 7 of the Horizons dining room. Regardless of whether you choose traditional or flexible dining, guests can enjoy the same new main dining room menus.

On Deck 8, there is the Americana Diner, a new concept for Princess Cruises. This casual restaurant has an entirely new all-day menu. Open for brunch and dinner every day, the Americana Diner serves all-day breakfast. The menu also features classic comfort food, like ribs, chicken wings, and sandwiches. You won’t want to miss the chicken and waffles cocktail here, either.

princess cruise dining reservations

While we only dined once in Horizons and once in the Americana Diner, we can see how the variety of dining options appeals to all types of cruisers. And Heidi is definitely a fan of the all-day breakfast.

Smart Elevators

Many hotels on land feature intelligent elevators. With this technology, guests select a floor and get assigned to an elevator. Once that elevator arrives, simply hop in and it will stop at your designated location.

While cruise ships have just started introducing this technology, our experiences have been hit or miss. We first experienced smart elevators on a cruise during our MSC Seascape sailing in December 2022, and let’s just say they were anything but smart. However, during a recent sailing on Icon of the Seas, the elevators worked perfectly .

princess cruise dining reservations

Happily, we can report that we had a similar experience on Sun Princess. These elevators were fast and efficient. Regardless of where we were heading, we never had to wait long for a lift. We never had issues securing an elevator up to the pool decks or down to the Piazza from our Deck 14 cabin, even on disembarkation morning.

Likewise, at night, an elevator back to our room from the Piazza never took long to arrive. There was only one instance in which an elevator arrived already too full for us to get in.

Outdoor Spaces

While Sun Princess introduces more light into its indoor spaces, the outdoor spaces shine as well. They are open, elegant, and provide great views from every angle.

At the aft of Deck 18 is the Sanctuary. This private sundeck is open to those in Signature Collection suites. Cruisers can also purchase day passes or get a discount when purchasing for the length of the cruise. Prices start at $79 a day, which includes access to the deck and an exclusive lunch menu.

It is the first Sanctuary in the Princess fleet to offer a pool, in addition to plenty of loungers, oversized chairs, and fantastic views overlooking the ship’s wake. There is also a private bar along with first-class service.

princess cruise dining reservations

However, a close second for us is the Sea View Terrace located on Deck 17 forward, outside of The Dome. With whirlpools, an indoor-outdoor pool, several comfy loungers, and a bar, this 2-story lounge space is certainly a tranquil retreat. It offers great forward-facing views with access to fresh air in a partially-protected space. Given it is entirely free, and not far from the new Lido dining options, it is a nice departure from the main pool deck.

Sun Princess also enhanced the outdoor spaces with the addition of the Deck 9 Promenade. Wrapping around the back of the ship, this outdoor space has a variety of seating options. There are also several eateries and bars just a short walk away. These include The Eatery buffet where guests are now served all their selections, the popular International Cafe, Alfredo’s Pizzeria with al fresco seating, and even new quick service food stations on the actual promenade.

Down one deck, the Wake View Infinity Pool and bar have a chill yacht club vibe and unspoiled views.

Where Sun Princess Fell Short:

Navigating the ship.

Similar to other Princess Cruises ships, there are very few decks where a cruiser can walk from one end to the other on both sides of the ship.

On Decks 7 and 8, cruisers can only move from midship to aft on the starboard side of the ship. To access the Deck 6 restaurant, cruisers need to use the aft elevators and stairwells.

Finding some locations also can be tricky. For instance, Good Spirits on Deck 7 is tucked behind the elevators. If it wasn’t for the sign on the wall, you could completely miss this popular venue. Likewise, Umai Teppanyaki is oddly situated on Deck 8, next to the midship elevators. Again, it is off the main starboard hallway, so you could miss the restaurant completely.

Where Sun Princess Shines and Fell Short

Finding the main entrance to the Sanctuary on Deck 18 also takes some maneuvering. You can’t get there from Deck 17. So, you must head aft on Deck 16 (or lower) and walk or use the elevators from here to reach that entrance. Likewise, the soon-to-be Love by Britto restaurant is located at the aft end of a hallway of staterooms on Deck 17.

Further, to get from midship to the Deck 8 Princess Arena, cruisers must walk through the casino, which leads us to another place where we feel the cruise line dropped the ball.

Not a Smoke-Free Casino

The casino on Sun Princess is the largest in the fleet. To enhance the “Vegas-feel”, the height of the ceilings in this Deck 8 venue are taller. This extra vertical space makes the casino feel larger and more glamorous than the typical casinos on other cruise ships.

But we were completely surprised that the casino allowed smoking. Although the ship has only been sailing for a few weeks, the smoke smell is already apparent. This is true even outside the casino itself, especially in the forward elevator bank. We aren’t sure if this has something to do with the increased ceiling height, but it was a huge turn-off for us non-smokers.

Where Sun Princess Shines and Fell Short

Design of the New Restaurants

At the back of the new buffet on Deck 9, The Eatery, there are two specialty restaurants. The Catch by Rudi and the new Butcher’s Block by Dario are located here. While the food was great, the ambiance was disappointing. In fact, both restaurants actually serve as overflow seating in The Eatery for breakfast and lunch.

While The Catch on the starboard side has a blue color palette which is distinct from the red color palette of The Butcher’s Block on the portside, these venues did not feel upscale or intimate. This is in contrast to other cruise ships in the fleet where The Catch is located off the Piazza and is a well-themed and elegant restaurant.

princess cruise dining reservations

Likewise, The Butcher’s Block concept is about a shared dining experience. But, given that it is an extension of the buffet, it loses much of the closeness it aims to achieve for this communal dining experience. A better seating arrangement for this restaurant would resemble a homestyle kitchen.

Honestly, it almost feels like these restaurants were after thoughts on Sun Princess.

What We Still Don’t Know About Sun Princess

With only five days onboard, there was only so much we could fit in and still fit into our clothes. So, there were several eateries that we did not get to test out, including one of our favorites, Alfredo’s Pizzeria. We only ate breakfast in The Eatery one day as well.

Further, given that the ship’s delivery was delayed, some onboard experiences were not available yet.

Unfortunately, we were not able to see any of the new production shows in either the transformational Princess Arena or The Dome. The first show, Vallora, A Pirate Quest , is set to debut in the Princess Arena in the coming weeks. The remaining new shows and reimagined Princess favorites will be rolling out over the next four months. Similarly, the Cirque Éloize shows in The Dome are still in rehearsals.

princess cruise dining reservations

Likewise, the Park19 attractions aimed at families are still awaiting certifications. These include The Nets Ropes Course, the Sea Breeze Rollglider, Splash Pad, and Coastal Climb. These onboard attractions will open in the coming weeks. We have to admit that we were a bit disappointed that we couldn’t experience these attractions to see how they compare to the competitors.

Finally, as the weather warms and more families hop on board, it remains to be seen how Sun Princess will handle the summer vacation crowds. During our sailing, the several sun decks were never all that busy. Even with a few sunny and warm-ish days, there were plenty of prime loungers near the several different pool areas.

princess cruise dining reservations

There were never any issues with long wait times for dining or at the bars to get a drink. We were able to get seats or prime standing locations for the nightlife in the Piazza as well. Hopefully, with more cruisers onboard, the ship’s approximately 850-capacity Princess Arena and 250-capacity The Dome will handle the crowds for the signature performances.

While Sun Princess does differ from other Princess Cruises ships, it should feel pretty familiar to loyal Princess guests, just bigger with some new amenities. For us, this modern and elevated new ship is a welcomed addition to the fleet, and we appreciated most of the updates.

Sun Princess will make her debut in Fort Lauderdale this Fall sailing Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries. Of course, we look forward to getting back onboard to give the ship a complete run-through for our signature cruise ship review scorecard. So, stay tuned.

12 dining mistakes you must fix on your next cruise

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Some cruisers might think there is no such thing as a “dining mistake” on a cruise. A vacation at sea can be akin to a feeding frenzy, with 24/7 dining options and all the pizza, ice cream and burgers you can eat. How could you go wrong with so many food choices?

However, if you actually care to have sit-down meals at the times you prefer in the restaurant of your choice and if you want to make the most of the dining opportunities provided on the ship, there are better and worse ways to approach your vacation.

A lack of planning can lead to your being dissatisfied with the onboard culinary experience – even though your tummy is full (or possibly, overly full) of food.

I prefer to treat cruises as a week of wonderful eating — like I would a visit to a city known for its culinary offerings — rather than an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord. To optimize the experience, I avoid these 12 dining mistakes whenever possible. If you want to taste all the best things on your next cruise without ever feeling hungry or grossly full, I suggest you fix your culinary strategic errors, as well.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Not making reservations as far in advance as possible

Cruise lines make a big deal of their multiple onboard restaurants. They neglect to mention that, like the hot new eatery in your hometown, it can be nearly impossible to get a table for four at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night — or at any reasonable dining time on any day of your sailing.

Spontaneity is nice on vacation. However, when it comes to onboard dining in specialty restaurants, a lack of advance planning will leave you dining too early, too late or not at all. If you want that perfect reservation, you’ll need to secure a table in advance.

Ideally, you will make your specialty dining reservations online before you set sail. On some ships, suite passengers get early access to the best times. Make your dinner plans as soon as you’re able. If not, make it a priority to book a table as soon as you’re on the ship.

For restaurants that don’t take advance reservations, you’ll need to strategize your evening. For example, on a recent Carnival Celebration cruise, guests needed to request a table through the line’s app if they wanted to dine at included venues, such as Chibang! or Cucina del Capitano. However, if you waited to request a table until you were ready to eat, you might have found yourself, as we did, with an hourlong wait.

If you’re able, you should put your name on a list or request a table 30 to 60 minutes in advance of when you wish to sit down, knowing you might end up eating earlier than you intended.

Missing the mid-cruise specials

On the other hand, if certain restaurants aren’t driving enough business, cruise lines will run promotions mid-cruise to entice more diners into the emptier venues. Or, the ship might run lunch or brunch specials in restaurants normally open only for dinner.

I noticed this on MSC Cruises’ MSC Seashore . Certain nights were designated all-you-can-eat sushi nights for a flat fee at the Kaito Sushi Bar. The Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse offered brunch on a sea day for less than its typical surcharge. If you’re interested in a nicer meal in an intimate setting for the right price, don’t forget to look for the mid-cruise specials printed in the daily newsletter.

Eating in the main dining room on the first night

It’s tradition for many cruisers to eat in the main dining room on the first night of the cruise. You’re still getting the lay of the land, and if you’ve selected assigned-seating dining, you’re eager to meet your waiters. Also, some avid cruisers remember a time when the best dishes, such as lobster, were served on the first night and don’t want to miss them – even though the cruise lines now often save their best dishes for formal night.

Because of this mindset, reservations can be easier to get in specialty restaurants on the first night of the cruise. Some lines even offer incentives if you book a table on the eve of embarkation. Carnival , for example, offers a free bottle of house wine or 50% off the regular wine list to cruisers who choose to dine in certain extra-fee restaurants on night one.

Related: 5 reasons you should splurge on a cruise ship specialty restaurant

Don’t miss out on the food and possibly a freebie by not considering a specialty restaurant for your first dinner on board.

Always eating as a family

You often see the multigenerational family cruise advice that everyone can do their own thing during the day and then come together at dinner and spend the evening as a family. This is great advice for families with teens and older children, but it’s not always ideal for little kids.

When I cruise with my children, I find our dining choices to be vastly different. My son has no use for a leisurely sit-down meal in a waiter-served restaurant. He wants to go to the buffet, grab food, eat and be done.

My picky eater daughter has no interest in a seafood restaurant, nor do I want to pay specialty dining fees for her to take two bites and declare she’s finished. (Know that many specialty restaurants will serve the regular kid’s menu of pizza and chicken tenders and not charge your children to dine.)

So on some nights, my husband and I will take the kids early to the buffet or a fast-casual restaurant before depositing them in the kids club, at which point we are free to enjoy a date night in the main dining room or in an upscale steakhouse or French restaurant on board. And everyone is happy. (I’ve even ordered room service for the kids on lines like Holland America that don’t charge.)

Forgetting about free room service breakfast

So many cruise lines have added delivery fees or a la carte pricing to their room service menus that budget-conscious cruisers have stopped considering in-room dining as an option. So it’s easy to forget that most lines have not yet slapped a price tag on Continental breakfast.

The options might not be vast, but sometimes you just want to sip a coffee and munch on some fruit or a croissant out on the balcony while you watch the sunrise. You’re always welcome to grab a more filling meal elsewhere on the ship later.

Room service is great for appeasing kids with cheerios and muffins while everyone gets ready to go up to the buffet. You can also order little boxes of cereal to keep on hand as afternoon snacks.

Sticking to the menu

Cruise ships don’t really have a secret menu like In-N-Out Burger, but sometimes galley staff can indulge you in a little creativity.

Luxury lines encourage it. Seabourn volunteered to cook my friends and me a vegetarian Indian feast, and SeaDream kept a secret stash of chocolate-chili ice cream that I could request whenever I wanted. That doesn’t mean mainstream cruise lines are hard-liners when it comes to the set menu, though.

Nearly every cruise ship I’ve sailed offers a veggie burger wherever regular burgers are found, including at private island barbecues, but you’ll hardly ever see one listed on a menu. I often ask for a side of roasted broccoli in the main dining room. The Carnival Pride staff got that one spot on, but the MSC Seashore folks delivered some sad steamed veggies I never ordered again.

Related: What not to eat on a cruise

At Royal Caribbean’s Sorrento’s pizzeria , you can request vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free pizza, even if you don’t see those choices listed on a menu.

And in the main dining room, you can always order appetizers as entrees, entrees as appetizers and get a scoop of ice cream on whatever dessert you like.

Skipping the extra-fee venues

I’m sympathetic to cruisers on a budget, as I’m often one of them. We all have to make choices about where and how we spend our vacation dollars.

Please do budget some money, if you can, to try a few of the extra-fee restaurants on cruise ships. They add variety to your onboard dining, and many offer great value for the money compared to land-based restaurants. The ambience is quieter and more intimate than in the main dining room, which can be loud and overwhelming, depending on your table.

Additionally, the food can be outstanding. I’m a fan of both Jamie’s Italian and Giovanni’s Table on Royal Caribbean , the steakhouse on Carnival, the Pinnacle Grill on Holland America and the Eden Restaurant on Celebrity Cruises .

Some extra-charge dining experiences, like teppanyaki venues and churrascarias on various cruise lines, can be more fun than the typical sit-down restaurant. You don’t have to be a foodie to get a lot of satisfaction from specialty restaurants.

Not trying new foods

Cruise ships have all your foodie favorites, whether they be juicy steaks, cheesy pizza or freshly rolled sushi. It’s easy to indulge in feel-good food, but when meals are included, I’d encourage you to live a little dangerously.

A cruise is a perfect opportunity to try something new because you can ask for something else if you don’t like it. If you haven’t ordered a ridiculous amount of food already, you can get a second entree or dessert for no extra charge. Try buttery escargot or your first baked Alaska ; Carnival routinely has frog legs and alligator fritters on the menu.

If you’re worried about food waste, order one dish for your table to share. If you love it, you can always order another.

Eating too early or too late

This dining mistake is not always something you can control. If you want set-seating dining, you’re often looking at a 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. dinner time, when 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. would be preferable. My problem is an early dinner leads me to go on a snacking spree before bed, when pretty much only pizza and ice cream are available. A late dinner has me hunting for food at 5 p.m. and ending up with a pre-dinner burger.

One way around this is to select a cruise ship’s anytime dining plan and figure out how to work the system to get the dining time you want. This might involve agreeing to share a table with strangers, making reservations or requesting a table at least a half-hour before you want to eat.

As I said earlier, making reservations for specialty restaurants as early as possible is the best way to ensure better dining times. Alternatively, if you’re flexible, simply go where the waits are shortest. Norwegian Cruise Line ships often have real-time displays indicating which dining venues have shorter or longer wait times for tables. Of course, the buffet and other fast-casual venues will have you eating in a jiffy.

Not hoarding snacks

You might be thinking, “But Erica, there is food everywhere on a cruise ship. Why would I hoard snacks?”

The truth is, while food is plentiful at 4 p.m. on a cruise ship, it’s not always the food I want to eat at that time. At home, I eat fruit, baby carrots or granola bars mid-afternoon.

While I wholeheartedly agree that a cruise is not the right time to diet, I also find that some days I can’t stomach another cookie or slice of pizza, which is what’s available between meals on board. Sometimes all I want is a simple yogurt or a bowl of grapes in the afternoon when they are nowhere to be found.

My solution: Case the breakfast buffet for healthy items and store them in your cabin’s minifridge for mid-afternoon snacking. Fruit, yogurt, muffins, hard-boiled eggs and small boxes of cereal all work to satisfy those late-day cravings without resorting to something straight from the fryer.

Or, make a PB&J at breakfast to eat later in the day. It’s an especially good strategy when you’re traveling with small children.

Wasting food

When you’re at sea, you should strike a balance between trying new things and wasting food. Food waste is a huge issue on cruise ships. The number of half-eaten room service dinners and pizza crusts I saw on my last cruise was appalling (especially since the pizza was so good).

Take small portions at the buffet, where you know you’re going to want to try a few different dishes. Pick one dessert to try, and then go back for seconds, rather than piling your plate high with all the choices. Have everyone at your table choose their own desserts rather than bringing back a pile of cookies for the table that no one actually eats.

Related: 9 best cruise ship desserts to tempt you at sea

Ask for one slice of pizza instead of two, and handle the soft-serve machine gently so you don’t end up with a towering cone you can’t finish. Don’t order room service breakfast for your friends as a prank, and don’t be afraid to say no to unwanted fries. Ask for smaller portions if you don’t eat a lot (though sometimes you can’t convince your waiter to bring you one), or share a dish with a friend.

That way, when you do genuinely want to try something and end up not liking it, you don’t feel as bad ordering a replacement dish you truly intend to eat.

Not pacing yourself

As I mentioned earlier, a cruise can be a nonstop smorgasbord if you let it. While it’s fun to give in to your guilty culinary pleasures for a day or two, a week of constant eating and fried, sugary, high-fat foods can make you feel ill.

Remember: It’s not a competition or about getting maximum value by eating all the included food offerings. It’s OK — dare I say, encouraged — to pace yourself. Don’t pick up that cookie just because it’s there. Don’t eat pizza every single day. Actively seek out a — gasp — salad to balance out the giant steak you’re eating.

Showing a little restraint will keep you from feeling bloated and gross by day four of your sailing. More importantly, it will also make the food indulgences you choose more special because you can truly appreciate those delicious meals.

Bottom line

It’s difficult to go hungry on a cruise ship, especially if you’re willing to pay for food, but it is possible to leave a meal feeling dissatisfied. No one wants that on their vacation.

A little forethought and some self-restraint go a long way toward making your onboard culinary experience memorable and enjoyable.

When you fix your cruise ship dining mistakes, you can avoid some of the frustrations surrounding access to the best restaurants and the mealtime ambience you prefer. If you can make it through a week on board without overeating or feeling hungry waiting for mealtimes, you’ll know you’ve mastered the art of cruise ship dining.

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

princess cruise dining reservations

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY¡C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.

Princess Cruises

majestic princess in glacier bay alaska

A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Departure City: Vancouver Cruise Ship: Disney Wonder

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

topshot france transport sea tourism

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

line break

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.
