Day Trips From Disneyland

Taking a day trip from Anaheim is a great way to extend a Disneyland vacation. Whether you are a regular visitor to Disneyland or this is your first trip, you might enjoy venturing beyond the immediate Disneyland Resort area and exploring Southern California. From beaches and museums to  other California theme parks , MouseSavers has information on many of our favorite places “beyond the mouse.” Best of all, many of them are FREE! This page is not intended to be a complete list, but is a guide to some of the major attractions and the discounts they offer.

All offers are subject to change without notice. Always call ahead and confirm before driving out of your way to take advantage of a particular offer!

Southern California Theme Parks

Balboa park, beaches in southern california, discovery cube orange county, griffith observatory, j. paul getty museum, la brea tar pits & museum, los angeles county museum of art (lacma), san diego zoo & safari park, walt’s barn in griffith park, walt disney (the man) in southern california, warner bros. studio tour hollywood, transportation options.

The are several theme parks within a 1-2 hour drive of Disneyland . Use the links below to see water park and theme park ticket discounts, coupon codes, membership deals and other offers that can save you money!

Universal Studio Hollywood  – Universal Studios Hollywood is both a film studio and a theme park. The signature ride is the Studio Tour, a tram ride that includes back lots where many TV shows and movies have been filmed. The theme park area has a variety of rides and attractions as well as the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Universal Studios Hollywood also has shows related to the moviemaking industry including the Special Effect Show and Universal’s Animal Actors. It is located just north of Hollywood.

Legoland California  -Legoland California has a theme park, an aquarium and a water park. The rides are fairly tame, compared to Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood, but that can make it a great place to go with younger kids, especially those who have never been to a theme park before. And Lego fans of all ages can enjoy the Lego-themed décor and Miniland USA, which features US landmarks created entirely with Legos. Legoland California is in Carlsbad, about an hour south of Anaheim.

SeaWorld San Diego – SeaWorld San Diego has theme park rides, shows and marine animal exhibits. They have a number of well-regarded roller coasters, including Manta. Their animal exhibits feature penguins, beluga whales, otters and fish of all kinds. SeaWorld San Diego is located in San Diego’s Mission Bay Park.

Knott’s Berry Farm & Knott’s Soak City  – Knott’s Berry Farm began as an actual farmstand that eventually became a unique theme park with all kinds of rides and attractions including rollercoasters and a log flume. Knott’s Soak City (open seasonally) is right next door and has a full slate of water rides and activities. Knott’s Berry Farm and Soak City are located just outside Anaheim, in Buena Park.

Six Flags Magic Mountain & Hurricane Harbor  – Six Flags Magic Mountain is known for its roller coasters – they have 19, as well as other rides and attractions geared toward all ages. Hurricane Harbor is their water park, open seasonally. Both parks are in Valencia, about 35 miles northwest of Los Angeles.

Sesame Place San Diego – Sesame Place San Diego is a Sesame Street-themed theme park and water park. It has an interactive Sesame Street Neighborhood, family-friendly special events and shows, whirling and splashing rides and a wave pool. It is located near San Diego, close to SeaWorld San Diego, the San Diego Zoo and other attractions.

Balboa Park is a public park in San Diego and home to a variety of museums, playgrounds, tours, trails and more! There are over 15 different gardens, most of which are FREE to enter. Museums include the San Diego Air & Space Museum, Fleet Science Center, San Diego Model Railroad Museum and several art museums. The San Diego Zoo is also in Balboa Park. If you need a quick bite, some caffeine or want a sit-down meal, there are a number of restaurants in the park.

Admission to Balboa Park and parking for Balboa Park are FREE. Each museum or organization is independently run and may charge admission – you can check the Balboa Park website or contact the Balboa Park Visitor Center for more information or help planning your visit.

  • If you plan to visit Balboa Park in addition to other theme parks and museums, consider the Go City San Diego All-Inclusive Pass . This pass includes admission to several Balboa Park museums , plus the  San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park ,  Legoland California ,   SeaWorld San Diego  on 3+ day cards,  Knott’s Berry Farm , plus multiple other attractions in the San Diego area. You pay one discount price for the number of days you choose. These work well if you are visiting at least two major attractions plus some less expensive attractions.  Plus,  MouseSavers readers  get an extra 10% off  total pass purchases!

Southern California is known for its wide sandy beaches and fantastic surfing waves, so you may want to add a beach visit to your Disneyland trip.  Huntington Beach is one of our favorites. We might be a little biased because some of us (Don and his sister, MouseSavers.com founder Mary Waring) spent a lot of our childhood there, but it really is a fun beach, and it’s located an easy drive from Disneyland. Like almost any beach, there are lots of FREE activities such as volleyball courts and bonfire rings, along with access to the beach. You can walk along the Huntington Beach Pier, or go fishing from the pier (no license required). There are a variety of pay parking options .

If you want to spend more than one day at the beach, we recommend a short stay at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach . The Hyatt Regency is a fabulous luxury hotel with a great kids’ program called Camp Hyatt, and it is right at the beach. In fact, Disney uses the Hyatt for its “Southern California Vacation Package” Beach Hotel option for Disneyland packages. (If you’re interested in booking that package, consult a Disney Specialist travel agent .)

Discovery Cube Orange County  is a children’s science museum in Santa Ana, California, a little over 5 miles from Disneyland. It’s located in a distinctive building that looks like a cube turned onto one point; visible from I-5. There are lots of permanent hands-on exhibits, as well as special exhibits that come and go. Special events throughout the year include the Annual BubbleFest in April, Spooky Science in October and the Science of Gingerbread in December.

General admission is $19.95 per adult (age 15+), $14.95 per child (age 3-14) and $16.95 per senior (age 62+). Parking is $6 and can be purchased online in advance.

  • Bank of America cardholders get one FREE ticket to Discovery Cube Orange County on Sunday of the first full weekend of any month through the Museums on Us program . You must show your Bank of America debit or credit card at the Ticket Office.
  • If you are a member of a science center or museum , you may be eligible for FREE admission to the Discovery Cube Orange County, as well as other museums that are members of the Association of Science-Technology Centers Passport Program . Restrictions apply and you must have your membership card with you. Thanks to Maryanne M for info.

The Griffith Observatory is located in Griffith Park  overlooking downtown Los Angeles. The Observatory has exhibits about all aspects of astronomy: the solar system, the history of the universe, the development of the telescope, to name a few, as well as a Foucault’s Pendulum. Their planetarium has a variety of shows offered daily, presented by a live narrator. The Griffith Observatory telescopes are open to the public any evening the Observatory is open and skies are clear.

Outside the Observatory you can also get a good view of the Hollywood sign or hike one of the many park trails .

Admission to the Griffith Observatory is FREE. There is a charge for parking during most hours, rates vary. (Please note: parking is limited and the pay stations only take credit cards.) Tickets to the planetarium are $10 per adult (age 13 and up), $8 per student or teacher (with ID) and seniors, and $6 per child (age 5-12). Children under 5 are admitted to the first show of the day only and must sit on an adult’s lap. Tickets can only be purchased at the Observatory on the day of the show.

There are lots of famous landmarks to visit in Hollywood , California: the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Disney’s El Capitan Theatre, The Chinese Theatre, Madame Tussauds. The good news is, everything you will want to see is located within about three city blocks, with the center being Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave.

The Dolby Theatre, home to the Academy Awards, has concerts, shows and other events that are open to the general public. Or, you can walk through the impressive multi-story portal from Hollywood Blvd. and wander along an Awards Walk of glass plaques featuring winners of the Best Picture Oscar.

The Hollywood Museum features four floors of Hollywood exhibits, including displays on Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Marilyn Monroe and Mae West, as well as costumes and props from a few films including Moulin Rouge and Silence of the Lambs.

  • Check out our Hollywood page for detailed advice about how to get there, what to see and discount information.

The J. Paul Getty Museum is actually two museums: The Getty Center (in Los Angeles) and the Getty Villa (in Malibu). Both locations offer special events and activities for families , in addition to their regular exhibits.

The Getty Center (in Los Angeles) is a small complex up on a hill with art exhibits, great views of Los Angeles, gardens, stunning architecture and several dining options. Once you have parked (or been dropped off) you ride a tram up to the Getty Center itself. Up there, you can enjoy the architecture, stroll around the gardens, have a snack and just generally enjoy the atmosphere – far above the noise and traffic of the city. And there’s art too! The Getty Museum features art from the Middle Ages to the present. In addition to the permanent collections and temporary exhibits, the Getty Museum has a Family Room with hands-on, art-related activities for kids.  Admission to the museum at Getty Center is FREE – but currently requires a timed-entry reservation made in advance . Parking is $20 per car, or $15 per car after 3 pm.

The Getty Villa (in Malibu) is a recreation of an ancient Roman country house. There are gardens, a classical theater and a café. The Getty Villa features ancient art, from the end of the Stone Age through the fall of the Roman Empire. In addition to the permanent collections and temporary exhibits, the Getty Villa Family Forum has hands-on activities for kids. So there are plenty of things for kids to touch and do while they are learning.  Admission to the museum at Getty Villa is FREE – however you must order a timed entry ticket online in advance . Parking is $20 per car, or $15 per car after 3 pm.

The La Brea Tar Pits & Museum is an active dig site and museum located in urban Los Angeles. The grounds of La Brea Tar Pits & Museum have a number of tar pits you can see, in addition to the famous Lake Pit – which is still bubbling and has life-size statues of mastodons. You watch actual excavators at work at Pit 23 and explore the plants of the Pleistocene Garden. The museum itself has over 2 million fossils of all kinds of ice age animals excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits just outside and a glass-encased Fossil Lab where you can watch paleontologists at work.

Admission is $15 per adult, $12 per student (age 13-17), $7 per child (age 3-12) and $12 per senior. General admission includes the Excavator Tour, a 45 minute tour of the Fossil Lab, Lake Pit, Observation Pit and Project 23. For an additional $6 per ticket you can see Titans of the Ice Age 3D or  Ice Age Encounters . Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended, you will have to pick a specific date. Parking is $15.

  • L.A. County Residents get FREE museum admission from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm daily. Tickets are available at the Museum ticketing desk or kiosks.
  • Museum admission for active or retired military with I.D. is always FREE.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) , in downtown Los Angeles (near the La Brea Tar Pits & Museum ), has art and objects from antiquity to the present and from all over the world, but is particularly well known for its collections of Asian, Latin American and Islamic art.

Admission for people who live outside L.A. County is $25 per adult, $10 for children and teens (ages 3-17) and $21 per senior (age 65+) or student with valid ID. Walk-up tickets are available, but purchasing a timed-entry ticket in advance is highly recommended.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art offers FREE admission on a variety of days and to a variety of groups.  For complete details, check the museum’s Free Admission section .  Please note: admission to specially ticketed exhibits is generally not included in FREE general admission.

  • General admission is FREE to everyone the second Tuesday of every month .
  • LA County residents receive FREE general admission after 3 pm every weekday with valid ID. (Please note: the museum is closed on Wednesdays.) They receive discounted admission otherwise.
  • General admission is FREE to all active-duty military personnel including National Guard and Reserve and their families from Armed Forces Day through Labor Day. Read more about the Blue Star Museums program and the list of participating museums.
  • Bank of America account holders get one FREE general admission ticket the first full weekend of every month through the Museums on Us program . You must show your Bank of America debit or credit card at the Ticket Office.
  • Members of art museums that participate in the Reciprocal Museum Program get FREE general admission – check the list of participating museums .

San Diego Zoo – The San Diego Zoo has over 3,700 animals, more than 700,000 plants and was one of the first zoos to house their animals in exhibits that recreate their natural habitats. In addition to walking around the exhibits, there is a guided bus tour, a mini train and a Skyfari. The San Diego Zoo is located in Balboa Park just outside downtown San Diego.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park – The San Diego Zoo Safari Park is known for their Asian Savanna and African Plains Safari exhibits, which have animals and plants from those habitats in the same open-range exhibit, best viewed from a tram. There are a variety of other exhibits and animals that can be seen from walkways, such as the Tiger Trail and the Gorilla Forest. The Safari Park is run by the same organization that runs the San Diego Zoo, but is located about 35 miles away from the San Diego Zoo, north of San Diego.

  • Check out our complete information about discounts for the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park .

Walt’s Barn in Griffith Park is the actual workshop from Walt’s home where he and his friends would relax and putter. Arguably Walt’s Barn was the birthplace of Imagineering, because many of Walt’s buddies became the first Imagineers. The barn is small, but has information about Disneyland history, railroads and Walt himself. It’s located in a pretty area with picnic tables nearby.

  • Read more about visiting Walt’s Barn .

Walt Disney lived and worked in Southern California for much of his adult life. So there are all kinds of places in Southern California that have a Disney connection – from his first studio to his favorite restaurant (the Tam O’Shanter ), as well as his beloved miniature railroad from his home on Carolwood Drive (now housed in Walt’s Barn in Griffith Park ). Many Disney films had their premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (now the TCL Chinese Theatre ) in Hollywood.

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour offers you an up close and personal visit to the sets and sound stages where major motion pictures and television series have been produced. It’s an excellent in-depth tour for anyone interested in how television and movie production happens. There are several tours to choose from including the Studio Tour, Classics Tour and Deluxe Tour. Check their website for details about each tour, as well as the length and cost. Parking is $15 per vehicle.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is located at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank (near the northwest area of Griffith Park , a relatively short drive from Hollywood). Dress in comfortable shoes as there can be some walking.

Please note: tours are open to ages 5 and up only; everyone age 18 and up must show valid ID to enter. You must pass through a metal detector and bags will be screened.

  • aRes Travel  offers tickets to Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood at a slight discount.

Disneyland Tours You Will Be Delighted You Took

hollywood tour from disneyland

Betsy Malloy Photography

A Disneyland tour is just the thing for anyone who loves Disneyland and Walt Disney. But many of the most ardent Disney-loving fans never heard of them. They aren't well advertised, and it's hard to find information about them even if you know they exist.

If you're a true Disneyland fan, you may find taking a Disneyland tour is just the thing to add your Disney Bucket List. If you're a first time visitor, you may not want to tie up several hours of your day on a tour, but that depends on how much you love Disney.

This guide covers all the ways you can go behind the scenes at Disneyland, to see how they make the magic and get some insider stories,

Some Disneyland tours are seasonal, and others may only be offered during busier times of the year. You can get current prices and find out which tours are available  at the Disneyland Tour web page .

How to Reserve a Disneyland Tour

To take a tour on your own, you must be at least 18 years old. A paying adult must accompany guests under 16 years old, and there may be height restrictions on some of the included attractions.

To take a tour, you'll first need to buy a ticket to get into the park. It must be valid for the day you take the tour. To avoid disappointment, reserve your tour as soon as you can bu no more than 30 days in advance.

The only way to reserve your tour is by calling 714-781-8687. Write down the confirmation number they give you because you won't get a confirmation email. You must pay when you reserve and the fee is not refundable.

When you get to Disneyland, go to the tour kiosk near City Hall. Give them your confirmation number and be prepared to show your ID. Or give them your name and show them the credit card you used to pay for your reservation. You will meet your tour guide in the same area.

These are the Disneyland tours you may be able to take. Except for the Adventures by Disney tour, they don't include much that's really behind the scenes, but you will learn a lot and see things from a different perspective. The souvenir pins are unique fun collectibles, too.

Walk in Walt's Footsteps Tour : Designed for the Disney-lover, this 3.5-hour, fact-and-trivia-filled tour explores how Walt Disney's vision became a reality. The tour also includes a delicious meal and a collectible souvenir.

VIP Tour : Ths experience is just what you might imagine, with priority access to attractions, reserved seating, and a personal coordinator. Before you look at the price, know that it covers up to 10 people.

Grand Circle Tour : Go behind the scenes to explore Walt Disney's love for trains and get a ride in the Disneyland Railroad’s special parlor car, the Lilly Belle.

Behind the Scenes at Disneyland and in Hollywood

This multi-day tour definitely belongs on your Disney Bucket List, if you're a hardcore fan.

Adventures by Disney runs guided tours all over the world, but not are quite like their Backstage Magic tour. It's a six-day, five-night ramble you'll never forget. It goes behind the scenes at Disney Studios, Disney Imagineering, and both California theme parks. And the most fun is that you get into places not open to the public, which may include Disney Imagineering and Disney Studios.

Seasonal Disneyland Tours

Check the Disneyland website for seasonal tours. They include:

Disney's Happiest Haunts is a Halloween-themed tour that features some spooking sightings at Disneyland, spine-tingling tales. And of course - a collectible souvenir pin, which is redesigned every year.

Holiday Time at Disneyland tours are offered from mid-November through early January. They usually include a chance to explore all the holiday traditions and decorations. You also get express boarding for "it's a small world" Holiday and Haunted Mansion Holiday. And reserved seating for the Christmas parade. And to keep it fresh, they change parts of the tour every year.

Walt Disney came up with the concept of Disneyland after visiting various amusement parks with his daughters in the 1930s and 1940s. He initially envisioned building a tourist attraction adjacent to his studios in Burbank to entertain fans who wished to visit; however, he soon realized that the proposed site was too small. After hiring a consultant to help him determine an appropriate site for his project, Walt bought a 160-acre (65 ha) site near Anaheim in 1953. Construction began in 1954 and the park was unveiled during a special televised press event on the ABC Television Network on July 17, 1955.

On this round trip from Disneyland to Hollywood bus / suv / party bus-- you will get to experience all the Magic that Disneyland has to offer.

  • 3.1 Renting a Charter Bus
  • 4 Train or Bus from Disneyland to Universal Studios
  • 5 Final Tips

How far is Universal Studios from Disneyland ?

In terms of how far from Disneyland to Universal Studios – it’s really not that far at only 35 miles / 56 km.  However, the main problem is a lack of good public transport options and the crazy, crazy Los Angeles traffic.

As we explain in more detail below, you’ll see that getting from Disneyland to Universal Studios by car can take anywhere from 35 minutes to a whopping 90 minutes!  By train or bus from Disneyland to Universal Studios , it’s even worse at around 2.5 to 3 hours.

Please note that all prices mentioned were correct at the time of writing and are in local currency.  To check the rate in your currency, click here.

Best Way to get from Disneyland to Universal Studios

With so much traffic, you’d think the best way to get from Disney to Universal Studios would be public transport – but as you’ll see in the section below – this is not the case. Instead, the easiest and most convenient way for getting to Universal Studios from Disneyland is by car.

Below we outline how to get from Disneyland to Universal Studios by driving your own car, renting a car or via ride share.

If you have your own car with you while staying in Los Angeles, driving from Universal Studios Hollywood to Disneyland (or vice versa) is the fastest and easiest way between the two parks.  Both parks are close to freeway exits, so the journey is fairly straightforward.

It’s recommended you use Google Maps to map out your best route.

Of course, with driving, you’ll need to allow for parking costs at both Universal Studios and Disneyland.  Parking at both theme parks starts at around $30 per day.

Renting a Car

If you don’t have your own vehicle while in Los Angeles but still wish to drive, then you can rent a car just for the day while driving to either Universal Studios or Disneyland.

From Disneyland, it’s easy to rent a car, with many car rental companies in the area.  Most companies open from 7.30 am or 8 am and allow you to return the car after closing time.  So you could easily hire a car for just the day while driving to Universal Studios.

From Universal Studios, renting a car is a bit harder, with most car rental companies located in and around Hollywood, which is about a 10 minute drive from the theme park.  However, you could easily take an Uber or Lyft to the car rental in the morning and back to your hotel after dropping off the car in the evening.

You’ll probably need to allow around $100 for hiring a car, plus gas.  And then you’ll also need to pay parking fees as well.

If you don’t have your own car with you and are not comfortable driving in Los Angeles, then your best option will be to use ride share such as Uber or Lyft.  There are plenty of drivers between Anaheim and Hollywood and you shouldn’t have too many issues finding a driver.

Expect to pay around $60-$100 each way for Uber or Lyft.  However, keep in mind that costs depend on demand and traffic, so it is possible that the rate could be much more than this, or even less.  The good thing with ride share apps is you’ll get a rough idea of the cost before booking.  So if it’s too much at any particular time and you have some time up your sleeve, just try again in 30 minutes or so and see if the price has reduced.

Taking the Anaheim to Universal Studios Uber or Lyft option will be more expensive than renting a car. Still, at least you don’t have to mess around with picking up the vehicle or dropping it back or any parking fees.  You also don’t have to worry about driving in the insane Los Angeles traffic.

The downside with ride share is that the maximum number of passengers in most cases is four people – so not ideal for larger families, and if travelling in LA with small kids, you may struggle to find an Uber or Lyft with a child car seat.

Best time to Drive to Universal Studios from Disneyland

If you decide to drive your own car, hire a car or take a ride share, you’ll need to consider the Los Angeles traffic.  If you leave at the wrong time, you could be stuck on the freeway for hours!

Unfortunately, the drive between Universal Studios and Disneyland is a popular commute for Los Angeles workers. So it really does pay to plan your trip outside peak hour traffic to avoid long lengthy delays.

Traffic is worse on weekdays between 7.30 am to 10 am and 3 pm to 6.30 pm.  So if possible, avoid these times at all costs.  During these times, expect the Disneyland to Universal Studios drive time to be at least an hour or more.

So from a traffic perspective, the weekends would be the best time to drive to Universal Studios or Disneyland, but that’s also when the parks will be the busiest.  Some families like to go on a weekday but leave early before peak hour traffic and have breakfast outside the parks.  Then you can stay inside the park until after peak hour traffic in the evening or hang around the downtown areas outside the parks.

Shuttle from Disneyland to Universal Studios

Given Disneyland and Universal Studios are so popular among tourists to Los Angeles, you’d think there would be a shuttle from Disneyland to Universal Studios – but there isn’t.  However, you can book a private Disneyland to Universal Hollywood shuttle with a private vehicle and driver.

A private Disney to Universal Studios shuttle is probably the best option for those families that want to lock in a price and not have to worry about price surges Uber and Lyft sometimes experience.  The price will be what it is, no matter what.

Another benefit of booking a private shuttle service from Disneyland to Universal Studios is that for families with young children, you can hire the necessary booster seats required.  If using an Uber or Lyft, you’d need to provide these yourself.

You can also book a private shuttle well in advance and feel secure knowing the driver will turn up at the arranged time.

With companies such as Xpress Shuttles or Anaheim Town Car Services expect to pay around $150 to $200 each way for a private shuttle for up to 4 passengers or about $220 to $250 for seven or more passengers.

Renting a Charter Bus

Depending on how big your family is, or if you’re travelling with other families in a group, going in on a charter bus could be a more affordable option than renting a car or a private shuttle.

Both parks accommodate tour groups and have bus parking available, and you typically have options for a minivan for up to 25 or a full charter bus of up to 57 (though that’s a large family reunion!).

Hourly rates for charter buses in California can vary between $99 – 110 depending on who you choose, and usually, there is a minimum hour/spend. It can be a fast and affordable option if you’re travelling with enough people.

Train or Bus from Disneyland to Universal Studios

hollywood tour from disneyland

If you’re after the cheapest Disneyland to Universal Studios transportation option, you can take the bus and train.  However, getting from Disney to Universal Studios without a car can take around 2.5 to 3 hours one way!

The time of day you travel between Disneyland and Universal Studios will depend on your route; however you’re likely to need to take a combination of buses and trains with multiple transfers along the way.  There is no direct route between the two theme parks.

I’d recommend using Google Maps to plan your route, but expect your journey to be something like this:

  • Take the 460 Bus near Disneyland from the closest stop near your Anaheim accommodation .
  • Get off the bus at Figueroa and 7th
  • Walk about 3 minutes to the 7th Street and Metro Center Subway Station
  • Take the Metro Red Line towards North Hollywood
  • Get off the subway at the Universal/Studio City Station
  • Take Universal Studios’ free shuttle to the park (it runs about every 15 minutes) or walk for about 15 minutes to the park

However, the good news with this option is it’s by far the cheapest way to travel

To ride the train and bus, you’ll need a TAP card, which can be purchased for $2 USD from vending machines at the station. You can also download the TAP LA app and purchase cards there.

Now in terms of fares.  The standard fare is $1.75 USD per 1 way trip on a bus and train with multiple transfers within 2 hours.  Given this trip will take you more than 2 hours,  $7 USD will get you a one day pass.

Hopefully, you’ve decided which is the best way to get to and from Disneyland to Universal Studios.  However, my other tip would be to get your tickets to each theme park in advance.  You can purchase Disneyland tickets here and Universal Studio tickets here.

Just curious if you know when they stopped offering shuttles? I haven’t been for 12 years but the last two times I went there were shuttles from Anaheim to Universal, as well as Anaheim to Sea World.

Five Things to Know About Star Tours – The Adventures Continue

Star Tours was Disney’s first modern simulator ride, and based on the Star Wars saga it was (as Yoda would say). Thanks to over 700 possible scene combinations in the high-def 3-D film at the heart of the attraction, you could ride all day and not have the same experience twice! Read on to learn more – or if you’d rather zip through hyperspace to the nuts and bolts, here’s your shortcut .

1. You enter the spaceport under an AT-AT.

Your Star Tours adventure begins outdoors, where the surroundings have been designed to resemble an Ewok Village (as seen in Return of the Jedi). You get to pass under a full-size AT-AT walker to get to the entrance of the ride’s building, which in and of itself is pretty cool.

hollywood tour from disneyland

Once indoors, you’ll find yourself in a spaceport where C-3PO and R2-D2 are working on your ride vehicle, the Starspeeder 1000. These life-size audio animatronics look and move exactly like their cinematic counterparts. The queue captures the familiar feeling of a train station or airport of today, but as it might exist in a galaxy far, far, away. It’s complete with a flight status board, weather reports, even a luggage scanner.

hollywood tour from disneyland

Just before you board, you’ll watch on overhead screens as C-3PO gets trapped in the Starspeeder cockpit while doing maintenance. After you enter the simulator and don your 3D glasses, the doors shut on C-3PO’s complaints about accidentally becoming the pilot, and your Starspeeder takes off.

2. You won’t know who you’ll see or where you’ll go.

The ride’s plotline comprises five general segments: an escape scene, a destination, a mission, another destination, and a concluding scene. Disney has multiple film clips from all nine episodes of the Star Wars saga that can be used for each segment of your journey, which creates a different experience each time you ride. So basically, you won’t know where you’ll go or which Star Wars characters you will see!

hollywood tour from disneyland

There are some limitations on how the scenes can be mixed, for instance, characters and scenes from Episodes 7-9 are not mixed with those from earlier movies. Still, it’s been noted by Star Wars purists that the randomized scenes can create a confusing timeline. Probably because of this, the ride experiences are not considered canonical in the Star Wars universe. But that doesn’t make them any less fun!

3. You may be the Rebel Spy!

In the escape scene at the opening, a villain (maybe Vader, maybe Kylo Ren, or ???) is searching for a Rebel Spy. A picture of an actual guest riding with you is shown onscreen and they are identified as being the spy. They’re chosen randomly or by a Cast Member and it can add a bit of fun if it’s someone in your own group – maybe even you!

Once you’ve made your escape, you may find yourself attacking AT-ATs, joining a pod race, being pursued by Tie Fighters, or more. The simulator is modeled after those used for training pilots and astronauts, so you’ll experience real dips, turns, twists, and climbs. It can be a little rough, but all the bouncing around helps to create a pretty realistic experience.

Star Tours - The Adventures Continue

You’ll make it back into hyperspace and the action will pause for a moment. You can catch your breath, and receive your mission from a Star Wars character who appears as a hologram. Sometimes the mission is just to deliver the Rebel Spy to safety, but there are other plotlines . Then you’ll take off and visit another planet for some more action.

Your adventure ends after a jump to hyperspace and a landing on Batuu, or possibly Spaceport THX1138 (the number is a nod to George Lucas’ first film), or one of a few other conclusion scenes. The entire attraction lasts about 7 minutes, the ride portion is about four and a half minutes. You’ll exit through the space terminal and into the Tatooine Traders gift shop, designed to suggest a desert outpost in Mos Espa.

4. It was different, a long time ago…

The first Star Tours attraction opened in 1987 at Disneyland, four years after the release of Return of the Jedi. Disney World’s version came two years later, in 1989. Since there was no Galaxy’s Edge at that time, it was placed in the Echo Lake area of Hollywood Studios.

This original version only had three movies (Episodes 4 through 6) to work with, and the premise was clear and simple. Star Tours was a transportation agency offering trips to Endor. However, according to the droid pilot R-3X (“Rex”), it was his first day on the job and he wasn’t used to his programming. As a result of his mistakes, guests never made it to Endor. But their ride did include crashing through comets, jumping to light speed, and the classic trench run on the Death Star.

hollywood tour from disneyland

Star Tours closed in 2010 for updates, and reopened as Star Tours: The Adventures Continue in 2011. Rex was retired from this version, but later became a DJ. You can see him today at Oga’s Cantina in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Fun fact: R-3X was voiced by the late Paul Reubens.

Today’s version offers 3D film and randomized scenes, and Disney updates the adventures with newer characters. A Jakku scene was added in 2015 for The Force Awakens, Crait was added in 2017 for The Last Jedi, and the planet Kef Bir was added in 2019, after the release of The Rise of Skywalker. As Disney continues to add new scenes, the number of possible adventures changes over time.

5. The Nuts and Bolts.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue is located at Disney’s Hollywood Studios Echo Lake between the Backlot Express and Grand Avenue. Since the attraction is indoors, it is not affected by weather, although part of the (covered) queue is outdoors.

You’ll be seated in rows in the Starspeeder 1000 simulator. Each of the five rows has 8 padded seats with a fabric lap belt and a shared armrest. A net bag below each seat holds your stuff.

Guests must transfer to a wheelchair and then to the ride vehicle. Disney advises that you should be in good health and free from high blood pressure, heart, back or neck problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this adventure. Expectant mothers should not ride.

Guests must be at least 40″ tall to ride, and as with all attractions that have a height limit, Rider Switch is available .  It’s worth noting that flashing lights, the use of weapons, loud sounds, and the appearance of aliens or intimidating figures may frighten or disturb some guests, especially the younger set. Service animals are not allowed. Video Captioning and Handheld Captioning are available.

Wait times for Star Tours are very low in the first two hours the park is open. It’s also a good choice between noon and 4 p.m. Alternatively, you can secure Lightning Lane entry via Genie+. Star Tours: the Adventures Continue is also open for both Early Theme Park Entry and Extended Evening Theme Park Hours.

The Bottom Line.

Our recommendation: Star Tours: The Adventures Continue is not to be missed. Would it be nicer if it were in Galaxy’s Edge? Maybe. Nevertheless, it offers a great experience from takeoff to landing. No matter where you go or who you see!

Grogu and Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in THE MANDALORIAN.

A handful of Disney + series are about to be added to one of the most well-known rides at Walt Disney World and Disneyland .

“Star Tours — The Adventures Continue,” the Star Wars themed ride with locations in Disneyland, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Paris, will add characters and locations from the Disney+ shows The Mandalorian , Ahsoka and Andor , beginning April 5.

'star wars': beau willimon to co-write james mangold's movie (exclusive), disney sets 'toy story 5,' 'mandalorian & grogu' for 2026, delays live-action 'moana' by a year.

The original Star Tours opened in 1987 at Disneyland and two years later at Disney World, transporting guests into the world of the Star Wars films. A new version of the ride, The Adventures Continue opened in 2011, adding scenes and characters from the newer Star Wars films.

The premise sees droids C-3PO and R2-D2 guiding visitors on a ride through the Star Wars universe aboard a spaceship. There are different openings, destinations, messages from Star Wars characters and endings, all randomly appearing in the ride, with a Disney post unveiled the changes declaring that there will be more than 250 variations for riders to experience.

Star Wars has been a source of major investment at Disney’s theme parks, even as Lucasfilm has gone years without a new film. There are now Star Wars lands in both Disneyland and Disney World, and there was, briefly, a Star Wars -themed hotel called the Galactic Starcruiser, which Disney shut down last year after being open for less than two years.

But the addition of characters and locations from the Disney+ Star Wars shows also suggest that the expanded universe from the franchise will be brought into the larger theme park fold.

A galaxy far, far away just got a little bit bigger!

hollywood tour from disneyland

Few attractions offer the kind of unique ride experience that Disneyland’s Star Tours — The Adventures Continue offers. First majorly updated in 2010, the ride was once again updated in 2015, 2017, and 2019 to include 700 different ride experiences.  Now in 2024, the ride is once again getting another update!

Star Tours — The Adventures continue at Disneyland, Disney’s Hollywood Studios , and Disneyland Paris all received an update on April 5th, 2024 to reflect new  Star Wars  Disney+ media and we were invited to get a FIRSTHAND LOOK! Check it out!

The new adventures include characters and locations from  Ahsoka, Andor,  and  The Mandalorian.  We got to experience these new adventures and we were absolutely blown away!

hollywood tour from disneyland

The pre-show was the same as usual. Also, our first scene was pod-racing on Tatooine — a scene we have experienced before.

hollywood tour from disneyland

Then came the exciting part — new characters! Din Djarin and Grogu sent a transmission with  The Mandalorian  theme song playing. Grogu snatched a flying frog while Djarin was giving us important intel which made for a fun 3D moment.

Then we made it to a planet featured in Ahsoka.  There, Ahsoka showed up to help us in battle with Purrgil (space whales). Beware — you may almost get eaten by one! We weren’t allowed to grab footage, but we love these new additions to the ride. We only saw the scenes from  Ahsoka  and  The Mandalorian —  we did not get  Andor  on our ride.

Accompanying the new Star Tours update at Disneyland is “Season of the Force” a Star Wars- themed event that will run from April 5th through June 2nd, 2024 . “Season of the Force” will include limited-time  Star Wars- themed food and merchandise as well as Fire of the Rising Moons (a NEW way to view the Disneyland fireworks from Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge), Hyperspace Mountain overlay for Space Mountain , Seek and Find at The Star Trader, and Disneyland After Dark:  Star Wars Nite events.

We’ll keep you posted on any updates during this event as well as on all things Disneyland, so be sure to stay tuned here at AllEars for all the latest!

New ‘star wars’ characters debut on a popular disney parks attraction today.

Star Tours - The Adventures Continue poster

Starting April 5, 2024, Disney Parks fans at Walt Disney World , Disneyland Resort, and Disneyland Paris can experience new characters and adventures on the popular Star Tours attraction. Those who choose to ride the Star Wars -themed motion simulator ride will have the chance to encounter destinations and characters from popular Disney+ series like Ahsoka , The Mandalorian , and Andor .

The new additions to the attraction bring the total number of potential storylines that riders can get to 250. During the attraction, guests may experience an urgent message from Ahsoka Tano, Dan Djarin and Grogu, or Cassian Andor, among other plot lines like visiting the planet Seatos from the Ahsoka series .

History of Upgrades on Star Tours

When Star Tours opened at Disneyland Park in 1987, it was a groundbreaking attraction where groups of 40 people could virtually travel to the Moon of Endor and more in a galaxy far, far away. The popular ride was later opened at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (then Disney-MGM Studios) and Tokyo Disneyland in 1989, and at Disneyland Paris in 1992.

In 2011, the attraction was completely overhauled to add multiple storylines that would be put together at random. Then as new movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker debuted, the ride offered more than 100 different storyline combinations.

When Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge opened at Disneyland Park and Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2019, Star Tours got another sequence that took riders to Batuu, the planet that Galaxy’s Edge is themed around.

WWE WrestleMania 40 Results As Jey Uso Defeats Jimmy Uso

Wwe wrestlemania 40 results as jade cargill arrives and destroys, wwe wrestlemania 40 results as sami zayn shocks gunther wins ic title.

These updates are part of the overall appeal to Star Tours for many. The fact that you can ride multiple times over your vacation to the theme parks and never get the same story combination makes for great re-rideability.

Star Wars Season of the Force

For Star Wars fans going to the Disneyland Resort to ride Star Tours, from April 5 through June 2, you can also experience Season of the Force. This Disneyland-specific activation will bring even more Star Wars experiences to the park.

One of the biggest ways to celebrate Season of the Force is to watch Fire of the Rising Moons inside Galaxy’s Edge. This special event only happens on nights when Disneyland Park has fireworks at night at the front of the park.

Galaxy’s Edge will be an alternative viewing spot to the traditional viewing areas around Main Street, U.S.A., complete with a Star Wars -themed score from various John Williams pieces. The show is best viewed from Black Spire Spaceport, the TIE Echelon docking platform, and the speeder garage.

Another Star Wars -themed attraction is returning to Tomorrowland, Hyperspace Mountain, a galactic-themed overlay of the fan-favorite ride.

On select nights from April 16 through May 9, Star Wars Nite will take place. This separately ticketed event at Disneyland Park includes themed food and beverage options, a fan costume parade, character meet and greets, and more.

Disneyland | disneyland to convert autopia cars from gas to electric, disneyland plans to electrify the autopia fleet in the 'next few years' — a timetable that likely pushes the conversion to 2026 or beyond..

hollywood tour from disneyland

The once-futuristic Tomorrowland concepts of freeways and overpasses that seem hopelessly outdated today will get a modern boost when Disneyland electrifies the gas-powered fleet of exhaust-spewing Autopia cars.

Disneyland will electrify Autopia and convert the attraction from gas engines in the next few years, according to Disneyland officials.

ALSO SEE: Disneyland closes Critter Country during Splash Mountain renovation

“Since opening with Disneyland park in 1955, Autopia has remained a guest-favorite most popular with young kids experiencing driving for the first time,” according to Disneyland officials. “As the industry moves toward alternative fuel sources, we have developed a roadmap to electrify this attraction and are evaluating technology that will enable us to convert from gas engines in the next few years.”

Disneyland officials would not say whether the Autopia cars would be converted to fully electric or hybrid vehicles, according to the Los Angeles Times .

The “next few years” timetable likely pushes the Autopia conversion to 2026 or beyond.

ALSO SEE: Universal Studios Hollywood celebrates 60th anniversary with retro Studio Tour

The last major Autopia refurbishment took place in 2016 when Honda became the ride’s sponsor. Previous ride sponsors were Chevron (2000-2012) and Richfield Oil (1955-1970), according to D23 .

The 1955 opening day attraction was redesigned in 1959, 1964 and 1968, according to D23. An extensive remodeling related to the Chevron sponsorship closed Autopia from September 1999 through June 2000, according to D23.

Disneyland could be planning an electric update to Autopia in 2026 if the Honda sponsorship ends after a 10-year contract, according to WDW News Today .

Florida’s Magic Kingdom and Disneyland Paris also have versions of the Autopia attraction. Tokyo Disneyland closed its Grand Circuit Raceway ride in 2017. The Hong Kong Disneyland Autopia — which closed in 2016 — featured electric cars with lighting effects and onboard audio, according to WDW News Today.

Electrifying Autopia is part of Disney’s goal of incorporating a net zero emissions future into every aspect of the Disneyland resort and reducing its overall carbon footprint, according to Disneyland officials.

The Disneyland resort has made a sustainability commitment of reaching net zero emissions by 2030 by increasingly relying on cleaner renewable energy sources. Over the past 18 months, the sustainability efforts have resulted in 10 million kilowatts of energy savings, according to Disneyland officials.
