The best bike tour in Bali

Bali Hai Tour is one of it's own. Beside the friendly and awesome staffs they have, Kadek.

The tour itself is different from others. We managed to experience cycling around the bamboo forest and pass through villages and have a chance to see how the people do everyday for their living.

I will surely come back to Bali and will for sure join the bike tour again. Will totally recommend friends who will be going to Bali to experience this... more »

One of the best days of my life..

Honestly! Our day with Bali Hai Adventure Tours was one of the best days of my life.

Just my daughter and me - riding through fascinating village life, impossibly picturesque lush Bali countryside, the air soft and warm, the bike riding easy; practicing Bahasa Indonesia with every person we met- all so friendly and happy; waving and shouting out hello to children and adults as we passed - it was almost magical. We were treated like royalty all day! ... more »

Awesome Bali Adventure

This was one of the best days we have had. We organised a private tour with Bali Hai so we could go at our own pace as we had young children.

They were very accommodating and helpful. Riding around the villages and rice paddies was extremely enjoyable and we loved stopping and talking with local villagers. My children, ages 11 and 8 thoroughly enjoyed the day, even though they were hesitant at first. Riding through the Bamboo forest was amazing... more »

Best Adventure Ever!

This is 6/5 Stars. I'd add another one if I could. This was the greatest adventure of my life. I seriously cannot express how memorable and incredibly life-changing and eye opening this bike tour was. They have the tour down to a science: and truly put the customers first. Epic Road Rides

Cycling Bali, Indonesia

Have you ever wondered whether road cycling in Bali is feasible?

It’s not the most usual of cycling destinations, and not somewhere you’re likely to head if you’ve got the choice of going to any cycling destination in the world. But trying to juggle training with a holiday with your family/other half is a (first world) dilemma competitive cyclists often find themselves in. Sometimes the cyclist in the family is simply not in charge of deciding the destination!

So, is it possible to get in some decent road cycling in Bali?

We asked one of our readers, Andy, who recently spent a few weeks in Bali with his bike to share his experiences.

Map showing Bali and places mentioned by Andy in this Q&A

1. Where did you stay and what was it like?

We were based in North Kuta, which is to the north-west of the capital, Denpasar. It’s the most popular area with tourists in Bali, particularly Aussies.

Bali is a stunning tropical paradise with tropical beaches, crystal clear seas, (great for scuba and snorkelling), as well as jungles and volcanoes.

Bali is the only Hindu island in Indonesia. It has real ‘eastern’ feel to it, and is covered in beautiful temples and statues to various gods.

Outside of the main towns you find the ‘true Bali’:  ancient temples, tiny villages, dense forest and a MASSIVE volcano, Mt Batur!

2. What’s cycling in Bali like?

In Bali there are really three types of rides:

a) City roads. Just DON’T! I found the city roads around Denpasar horrendous (and Ubud was similar)! The traffic (any time of day) is mental. Swarms of scooters use every part the road, don’t indicate and generally travel slower than I did on my bike. That said, if you find yourself needing to negotiate any city road, give mapmyride a go – I found it really useful (when on ‘car setting’) for finding the small back roads to avoid the jams.

b) Coastal beach front, generally on the south, east and northern shores.  Stunning sea views, undulating terrain, plenty of cafes to stop at and deserted beaches.

c) Mountain roads.  Mount Batur, in the centre of Bali, is unlike Mount Teide that I am used to in Tenerife. On El Teide there are around six routes up that generally snake up over 30-40 miles ( this article has more information).  By comparison, from the south of Bali, the climbs are less curvy: Mount Batur has created huge fissures that deliver numerous (relatively) straight roads that climb these fissures at about 3-5% for over 40 miles from sea level to the crater rim (about 4k ft).  These are linked by a network of tiny and very steep roads that go up and over and link these long straight roads. On the west there are more undulating (but very steep) short sharp mountains where the roads are deserted.

Cycling past paddy fields in rural Bali

3. What was your favourite cycle route in Bali?

My favourite ride went pretty much straight up to the top of the crater of volcano Danau Batur via Ubud (the religious centre that’s home to some incredible temples) from the sea, via rain forest and rice paddies to the stunning crater view point.  This ride was around 90 miles, and went from 40 °C temperatures to a pleasant 20 °C at the top. It included long steady ‘tempo’ climbs and some awesome technical descents.

There was an option to do a loop into the crater and back out of around 6 miles. I didn’t do this, due to time, but beware it’s VERY steep > 25%!

My Strava route is here .

4. What’s the best route that not many people know about in Bali?

The best unknown ride I came across was from the far west from Blue Lagoon (near Amlapura), snaking up an impossibly steep climb tagged on Strava as ‘Manggis Putang’. The climb goes from sea level to 2,000 ft in just four miles! It took me 38 minutes!  The route then takes you past rice paddies, via Ubud and back to Kuta.

The first climb is pretty unknown with (I think) only 38 Strava ascents. Its amazingly steep and goes on for 4 miles with no let up – I averaged just 6mph!

My Strava route is here  and GPX file is  here .

Road bike outside a temple in bali

5. What are your best tips for people cycling in Bali for the first time?

It’s VERY hot, so take plenty of water, refuel often (there are loads of shops and locals selling by the road and I always wanted to support and buy from the small holders).

If you’re training to heart rate or power, be prepared for numbers different to the ones you may be used to at home.

Focus on rehydration post ride (the beer is great)!

Plan routes wisely and really avoid the centre of Denpasar. I’d also suggest avoiding the south-eastern end of the island where the roads seemed busiest.  Head north and west for the quietest routes

Use mapmyride – but on ‘driving’ setting to plan routes.  I found it really useful.

6. Did you come across any really good coffee/bar/café stops in Bali?

Head for Kayah Bali Bike shop , close to the coast at Sanur on the east side of Denpasar. It’s just off the main dual carriageway, heading west towards Blue Lagoon and the stunning beaches, and is run by Pete Collis.  You’ll find awesome coffee, fresh fruit and drinks.

7. Is there anything that visitors shouldn’t miss?

Ubud is world renowned and worth a visit for the temples, markets, shops and food experience.

A trip through the rice paddies is iconic.

Mt Batur volcano is worth visiting, just for the view (and cooler temperatures!).

If you are into scuba / snorkelling then head to Blue Lagoon (loads of trips available). It’s stunning and we saw a massive array of fish including turtles.

8. What can non-cycling partners do in Bali?

Non-cycling wise it’s all about the beaches: surfing is good and scuba/snorkelling, as mentioned above.

Bali is internationally famed for its food and you can get a good meal for two and beers for £20-£25. Street food (which was excellent) costs pennies.

There are lots of shopping opportunities too. However be aware that the ‘western targeted’ areas are (relatively) expensive.

One of Bali's famous beaches

9. What’s the best town/city to stay in?

If you’re fully focused on cycling, I’d say don’t choose Denpasar. Instead, head to the north coast’s Singaraja,  or maybe west to Kubu and Amalpura.

However, if you’re looking for a mix between a cycling and non-cycling holiday or if your partner/family don’t ride, the Kuta/Seminyak/Denpasar area gives a good balance.

10. What’s the best time to visit?

Bali is pretty tropical and generally is similar temperatures all year round. However it probably makes sense to avoid the rainy season which is generally between October and January.

Big thanks to Andy for sharing these really useful insights on cycling in Bali.

8 Responses to “Cycling Bali, Indonesia”

Great FAQ, thanks. Did you cycle solo or in groups and did you feel safe when outside of the hectic cities? I’m heading back to Bali for the first time since picking up road cycling and keen to get out, but my memory of the roads was that you take your life into your hands even when in a car, so even as an experienced cyclist I’m a bit nervous!

Just checked in with Andy, and he had this to say: “I cycled only solo, I actually felt very safe in and out of cities (weirdly). Ddespite all the traffic in town , and there was so much, it was moving at the pace I was riding so I was in the flow, rather than cars / motos whizzing past close as they do at home you were travelling their speed and it felt safer. Out of towns there was no traffic and it was a real pleasure to ride on the small climbs up to the volcano.” Hope that helps!

Nice write up! However I think you got your east and west mixed up: Amlapura and Blue Lagoon are in the far East not the far West. (The far west would involve riding down the single-lane trunk road taken by speeding trucks from Java; supposedly the most dangerous road in Bali. Not dangerous if you know what to watch out for but not the most pleasant and certainly not recommended for cyclists new to Bali).

Manggis is not unknown, more like unpopular… I think most cyclists just don’t want to do it because they have heard how steep it is. In Bali, Strava numbers are not as representative as they might be in other places as many local cyclists (perhaps the majority?) are not on Strava. The much higher numbers you see on some other roads in Bali could have been bumped up by GFNY or other mass rides that happened to roll that way.

Canggu is also a favourite base for cyclists with families. Albeit a bit touristy, it’s got great beaches and cafes, is closer to some of the best highland cycling in Bali (Jatiluwih, Bedugul) and you can avoid traffic getting to them, unlike Kuta.

Hi Wendy, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts – useful feedback and great to have some extra insights. Do you live in Bali? It sounds like you know it very well! Thanks again, Clare

Overall great article for tourists coming to Bali. Rainy season is at its peak Dec – Feb though, not Oct/Nov (which is often still very dry).

Thanks for your kind comments. Useful to have your insights on rainy season too. Thanks!

Thanks for a great article with valuable info! Is it possible to rent a high quality carbon gravel bike in Denpasar? I will travel light around the island and stay in different places. I have a passion for climbing, so I will do those routes. If a good bike cannot be rented, I’ll bring with me my Cannondale Topstone in a hard shell box and store the box in Denpasar (e.g. in the first hotell). Perhaps I’m going this year after the peak of the rainy season. Comments and recommendations are welcome.

Hi there, perhaps try getting in touch with the bike shop mentioned to find out options? Have a great trip! Clare

8 Days | Discover the real Bali on a cycling trip across Indonesia’s ‘Island of the Gods’.

Cycle through the beautiful island of Bali with Intrepid Travel

It’s all about two wheels in Bali, and this action-packed cycling trip takes in some of the island’s best spots in the highlands and on the coast. Hit the road in Ubud and wind your way south, into a world of lush green rice fields, smouldering volcanoes, family-run warungs, community projects, caves, temples and tiny villages. With the chilled-out beaches of Lovina and Sanur on the horizon, and a slew of adventure activities on offer throughout – such as a hike up Mt Batur – this is an unforgettable journey for cyclists and adventurers alike.

Trip overview

  • Escape the tourist hordes and cycle through the island's heart, from the green hills of Ubud to the laidback beach towns of Lovina and Sanur.
  • Cycling’s not the only activity on offer. Take the chance to hike up Mt Batur, visit hidden caves, soak in hot springs, and enjoy some watersports on the coast
  • As well as beautiful temples, visit less-known villages such as Trunyan, whose astounding burial tradition makes use of a mysterious ‘magic tree’
  • Feast on the most authentic Balinese cuisine, prepared lovingly by unsung kitchen masters such as Lovina’s Bu Wayan
  • Relax and unwind on the unique black sand beaches of Lovina, the perfect place to rest your bones after a few days on the bike
  • By travelling on this trip, you’ll directly support our Intrepid Foundation partner, World Bicycle Relief. Donations provide school kids, health workers, and farmers in far-out areas with bicycles that provide access to education, healthcare, and income.
  • To complete this trip it is important that you are both confident and competent in riding a bicycle.
  • On this trip we have a single leader that rides with the group, and another that drives the support vehicle (acting as a back marker where needed).
  • This trip is designed for those who love to get active. While prior training may not be necessary, a moderate level of fitness will help you get the most out of the activities on this trip.
  • The optional hike to the Mt Batur crater is demanding and can vary a great deal depending on the weather. Be sure to bring strong, sturdy walking shoes.

Om Swastiastu! Welcome to Ubud, the arts and cultural centre of Bali. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. Afterwards, perhaps head out to Gianyar night market. It's an informal setup, but a great way to get a taste of the local culture and cuisine.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Ubud - Blanco Museum - IDR80000
  • Ubud - Yoga lesson - IDR120000
  • Bali - Kecak Fire Dance - IDR100000
  • Ubud - Saraswati Temple Lotus Garden - Free

Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask reception where the welcome meeting will take place. If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for the welcome meeting, you may wish to arrive a day early so you're able to attend. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please ensure you have all these details to provide to your leader.

Our first ride takes you to the Ubud Royal Palace (Puri Saren Agung) then cycle an undulating 10 kms along quiet roads through Ubud’s rice paddies and an insight into local life, including a rest stop at the surreal Tegallalang Rice terraces. Continue on through Bali’s verdant countryside before experiencing our first taste of traditional Balinese cuisine at a local family-run warung (Indonesian café)

From here we cycle on a further 10kms to the thousand-year-old Tirta Empul temple. Dedicated to Vishnu, the Hindu God of water, this one of the largest water temples in Indonesia. As a holy site only local Balinese can bathe in the waters but you are free to explore the temple grounds, including the peaceful Jeroan section or the calm waters of the Koi Pool.

After visiting Tirta Empul we slowly make our way back to Ubud, (approx. 16 kms, mostly downhill) taking quiet roads back past lush rice fields. This evening why not enjoy all that laid-back Udud has to offer, from a traditional Balinese Kecak dance to sampling local delicacies at the Night Market.

Ride distance: approx. 38 kms / 24 miles on mostly undulating roads, with an elevation gain of approx. 580m / 1900ft

  • Ubud - Pura Tirta Empul Temple

Start the day early, driving (approx. 1hr) from Ubud to Penelokan in the shadows of Bali’s mighty volcano, Mount Batur. Cycle around the undulating caldera of the mountain past black lava fields still evident from 1968 eruption (with around 2km of cycling on a lava road) before returning to the quiet asphalt road then stopping for lunch. From here you can see glorious Mt Batur, as well as the shimmering Lake Batur at its base.

In the afternoon, you can laze at the hotel or take the option of hopping into a boat for a quick visit to a most unique local village, Trunyan. What sets this village apart from others is its fascinating way of dealing with the deceased; instead of the conventional Hindu tradition of cremation, bodies are put under the 'Kayu Menyan' tree which is said to absorb the odour. Be warned though, this can be a challenging experience.

Ride distance: approx. 44 kms / 27 miles on mostly undulating roads, with an elevation gain of approx. 1040m / 3410 ft

Cycle from Kintamani to Bedugul today (approximately 55 km).

There's the option of climbing Mt Batur beforehand. Those that choose this optional activity will get up in very early morning (3 am) for the climb, which reaches 1717 metres above sea level. It's quite chilly at this early hour – usually somewhere between 8°C and 12°C, so dressing in layers is essential to deal with the sharp rise in temperature later on. A 15-minute drive leads to the starting point, and the climb itself takes around two hours, with an additional 30 minutes to get to the summit if you choose (refreshments are available at the top). The sunrise rears its head at around 6:15 am, after which many cheeky monkeys show up in search of food. You can also visit the nearby cave, where the Balinese come to worship twice a year; from here you can see the steam of the crater rise.

For those not doing the optional climb you can sleep in a little before the ride to Bedugul begins. Today's ride starts out flat before a slight uphill but it's worth it! From here you enjoy over 30kms of mostly downhill, cycling past orange and coffee plantations all the way to our lunch stop.

After lunch it's an uphill ride to Bedugul, a sleepy village at the edge of the crater lake of Bratan (Lake of Holy Mountain). An area of great natural beauty, at 700m above sea level it makes for a refreshing change from Bali's constant humidity.

Ride distance: approx. 44 kms / 27 miles, with a mixture of uphill and downhill roads, with an elevation gain of approx. 550m / 1820ft

  • Mt Batur - Hot springs - IDR300000

Cycle from Bedugul to beachside Lovina today (approximately 52km). The roads are mostly downhill and has some beautiful views to enjoy.

Along the way visit one of the main temples in Bali, Ulun Danu Baratan. Appearing to ‘float’ on the lake, the 500-year-old temple is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the water goddess, and ceremonies are held here in the name of water supply to Central Balinese farmers. Spend around an hour checking out the temple, then ride on the traditional market– a good place to pick up a mangosteen to snack on (or a durian, for those who can handle the aroma!).

Continue cycling through this beautiful countryside, stopping to admire the other two crater lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan before stopping at the most scenic waterfall in Bali – Munduk waterfall. Set among lush forest it is a wonderful place to cool off before cycling onwards through cloves plantations all the way down to the unique black volcanic sand shores of the Bali Sea and laidback Lovina.

Ride distance: approx. 42 kms / 26 miles, with a mixture of uphill and downhill roads, with an elevation gain of approx. 450m / 1475ft

  • Ubud - Pura Danau Bratan
  • Munduk - Waterfall walk
  • Lovina - Yoga class - IDR120000

Avoid the long uphill from the coast to the centre of the island by starting with a short drive (approx. 1hr) to Pupuan Village. From here jump on your bike and ride (approx. 17 kms) the undulating roads to the beautiful Belimbing Rice Terrace, possibly the most photogenic rice terrace in Bali.

Coast downhill (approx. 10kms) before joining a busy road to the small village of Meliling (approx. 11kms) before continuing south a further 18kms to Tanah Lot, and a visit to the legendary Tanah Lot Temple (which translates literally 'island on the sea'). It's a popular but beautiful spot to see the sunset. Your accommodation tonight is short drive from Tanah Lot and a short walk to nearby Canggu and Batu Bolong surf beaches.

Ride distance: approx. 45 kms / 28 miles, with a mixture of uphill and downhill roads, with an elevation gain of approx. 400m / 1310ft

Leaving the coast and avoiding the congested and dangerous roads that lead to nearby Denpasar we drive north and up (approx. 1hr) to Luhur Batukaru temple, the start of your ride today and the last ride we do in beautiful Bali. Once again cycling through the beautiful landscape of rice terraces, palm trees and lush green forest we make our way to the small village of Jatiluwih, home of the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih Rice Terrace, for a short rest stop before continuing downhill for lunch and our final stop for the day, Marga village. From here we bid farewell to our bikes and support crew and drive the final leg to sleepy Sanur (approx. 1.5hrs)

The afternoon is at your leisure in Sanur. Stroll along the beach, take a dip in the calm waters, or grab a well-earned drink in one of the small local bars.

Ride distance: approx. 30 kms / 19 miles, mostly downhill roads, with an elevation gain of approx. 330m / 1090ft

  • Tanah Lot Temple
  • Sanur - Yoga Lesson - IDR120000
  • Sanur - Cooking Class - IDR700000
  • Balinese Massage - IDR150000

The trip comes to an end today, with no further activities planned.

Sanur is a convenient place from which to embark on further travel. Perhaps head east and get off the beaten track on our Bali & Lombok: Hike, Bike & Raft trip.

  • Rip Curl Surfing Lesson Sanur Beach - IDR750000

What better way to explore Bali than on bicycle !

These bicycle tours allow you to get up close and personal with Bali’s beautiful nature and take in the fresh air.

There are multiple Bali cycling tours to choose from while in Bali. If you are up for the challenge of cycling in Bali, you may like to choose the rather challenging bike tour through black lava on a mountain bike. If you prefer something a little more relaxing, a tour on an E-bike may be a better option for you!

Depending on your fitness level and what you’re looking for, either one can be a great activity for you and your family or friends during your time in Bali.
