Wout van Aert winning the recent Tour of Britain

Wout van Aert adds more races to his 2023 calendar

Wout van Aert 's original racing calendar for Jumbo-Visma over the closing months of the road season was relatively sparse, with the Tour of Britain only preceding the Super 8 Classic and the European Championship road race. However, in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws , he has revealed that he will also do a short spell of racing in Italy before the Gravel World Championships in October.

Van Aert's final appearance in Belgium remains the Super 8 Classic, where he will go up against Mathieu van der Poel for the last time before the cyclo-cross season, but he will also add the European Championship time trial to his schedule, alongside Coppa Bernocchi and Gran Piemonte in early October.

"The coming weeks are busy," admits Van Aert. “I will still ride the Super 8 Classic, the time trial and road race at the European Championships, Coppa Bernocchi, Gran Piemonte and the Gravel World Championships. I still want to end the season well.”

The two Italian races will fit in well with Van Aert's plans, with the Gran Piemonte taking place on October 5 and the Gravel World Championships being held just three days later in the Veneto region of Italy.

Lidl-Trek make their ninth signing of the transfer window with Sam Oomen from Jumbo-Visma

Sam Oomen has joined the likes of Tao Geoghegan Hart, Carlos Verona and Jonathan Milan in putting pen to paper on a deal with Lidl-Trek for 2024 and beyond. The Dutch climber will bolster the American team's ranks to support Geoghegan Hart, alongside the recent additions of Andrea Bagioli and Patrick Konrad.

  • Carlos Verona heads to Lidl-Trek after Ineos Grenadiers ice deal

"I’ve always had a good connection with Tao Geoghegan Hart, who I’ve already known since we raced as juniors," revealed Oomen. "Being teammates with him after all these years racing together and against each other is really exciting.

“I hope to be a bit more consistent again. After my injury and some rough crashes I for sure had some good moments but lacked the consistency required to step up another level. For sure my strength lies in the hilly stage races and I have a big love for the long hilly classics."

Lidl-Trek have had an influx of money since Lidl came onboard as the new title sponsor ahead of the Tour de France, and this budget has been flexed since the cycling transfer window opened on August 1.

Sam Oomen made his most recent Grand Tour appearance at this year's Giro d'Italia

Sam Oomen made his most recent Grand Tour appearance at this year's Giro d'Italia

Oomen made his breakthrough on the WorldTour with Giant-Alpecin - now dsm-firmenich - in 2016, winning the Tour de l'Ain and finishing ninth at the 2018 Giro d'Italia with the team.

The Dutchman helped teammate Tom Dumoulin to finish second in that race, before making the move to Jumbo-Visma in 2021. Since then, Oomen has struggled for consistency at times but has still helped Primož Roglič to two Grand Tour wins - the Vuelta a España in 2021 and the Giro d'Italia earlier this season.

“I met with Sam several years ago as a young rider on the start of his journey as a professional cyclist. Whilst he raced for a different team, meeting him left a positive impression and of course I have followed his progression over the years," said Lidl-Trek general manager Luca Guercilena.

"We’ve seen Sam ride as an important helper for his leaders in Grand Tours, including being on the winning team twice. It’s our hope that he can help us to do the same in the future.”

Lisbon may host Vuelta a España start for first time since 1997

Lisbon held the UCI Road World Championships in 2001

As reported by AS in Spain, Lisbon is a strong candidate to host the Gran Partida (otherwise known as the Grand Départ ) of the 2024 Vuelta a España . The Portuguese capital is likely to be named the fifth foreign start in the race's 88-year history, with the Vuelta's organisers Unipublic currently in talks with a number of locations before making the final decision.

Speaking to AS back in March, Vuelta race director Javier Guillén spoke of the success of the Gran Partidas to date.

"What was experienced in Utrecht [2022] was a success. We have many requests to start abroad. In the next four years, we will see at least one from outside Spain."

Indeed, the Gran Partida from the Netherlands last year was the Vuelta's most recent foreign depart, preceded by Nîmes (France) in 2017, Assen (the Netherlands) in 2009 and funnily enough, Libson in 1997.

This year's race began in Barcelona and whilst the departure city for the following edition is usually known by the start of this year's race, no such revelation has yet been made by the Vuelta.

Unlike the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia , which have long begun on foreign soil upon occasion, the Vuelta did not begin outside of Spain for the first time until Lisbon was given the honour in 1997. The event proved a success and, just four years later, the Portuguese city held the UCI Road World Championships , with the elite men's race won by Spain's Óscar Freire.

Portugal had their first road race world champion 12 years on, when Rui Costa emerged victorious in Florence, Italy. The Intermarché-Circus-Wanty veteran recently won stage 15 of the Vuelta and would surely love to be at the start next season if Lisbon gets the nod as the host city, as too would UAE Team Emirates' João Almeida , a fellow Portuguese.

Sepp Kuss: 'I’m feeling really good and I’m looking forward to this week'

By Patrick Fletcher

Sepp Kuss has stated he expects “no gifts” as he heads into the final week of the Vuelta a España in the overall lead but trailed by his two teammates, Primož Roglič and Jonas Vingegaard.

“In cycling, there are no gifts, or letting off; when you feel good you can’t just hold off,” said in a rest day interview with Belgian broadcaster, Sporza . In what seemed like a key phrase, he added: “It’s fair that way.”

Kuss is usually found sacrificing himself for the ambitions of his more decorated teammates, and has helped them each win a Grand Tour this season alone, Roglič taking the Giro d’Italia and Vingegaard the Tour de France.

At the Vuelta, however, he finds himself in an unusual position, gaining time in an opening-week breakaway and passing critical tests in the form of the stage 10 time trial and two days in the Pyrenees to take the red jersey into the final week.

“The past weeks have been the ones with the most new experiences and also beautiful experiences, and the next week is one that, even without being in this position, I’d be looking forward to. I love the climbs in Cantabria and Asturias, they’re my kind of climbs, the steep climbs you see in the Vuelta. I’m feeling really good and I’m looking forward to this week."

Lachlan Morton breaks the Great Divide record after 12 days of riding

By James Howell-Jones

At 9:24pm on Sunday, September 10, Lachlan Morton arrived at the US border with Mexico, marking the end of his record-breaking attempt of the Great Divide mountain bike route.

Lachlan Morton's ride will be documented in a film by Thereabouts

He completed the 4296km mountain bike route in 12 days, 12 hours and 21 minutes, unofficially breaking the long-held record of 13 days, 22 hours and 51 minutes set in 2016 by ultra-distance legend, the late Mike Hall.

This fastest known time (FKT) attempt may remain unofficial for a couple of reasons. Firstly, Morton was accompanied by a film crew, which could discount the validity of this record as an 'unsupported' ride, even though Morton was self-sufficient en route.

Secondly, the route itself has undergone various changes in the seven years since Hall claimed the FKT, making it difficult to compare attempts. Hall's ride was 4366km – almost 70km further than Morton's recent attempt.

The ride wasn't without its hiccups. On day 11, his derailleur stopped working. Morton did everything he could to resolve it, telling his film crew that evening: "I kicked it as hard as I could and then it started working again."

Alas, within five minutes it was off again, and for the rest of the day, it was temperamental. To make it to the finish, Morton bodged the derailleur with a spare spoke, shoving it into the mech so he could manually shift between the gears.

Morton has used the ride to raise funds for Adventure for All, with the total so far at over $20,000, and donations still coming in.

Sam Oomen, now with Lidl-Trek after three years with Jumbo-Visma: “My career is too short to leave something behind”

Avatar of Marcos Bertelli

Sam Oomen secured the ninth position in the 2018 Giro d’Italia, providing support to Tom Dumoulin. This happened five years ago when expectations were high for the 23-year-old Dutch rider.

However, circumstances did not unfold as planned, and Oomen had to settle for a secondary role at Jumbo-Visma, to which he joined in 2021. Making the transition to the Lidl-Trek team next year, Oomen aims to regain his shine alongside his friend Tao Geoghegan Hart.

Recommendation from Tao Geoghegan Hart

“Sam’s name came from Tao (Geoghegan Hart) when we were talking to him. Sam’s contract expired, and we were looking for that kind of rider, so everything worked out,” says Steven de Jongh, sports director of Lidl-Trek, in a conversation with the Dutch newspaper In de Leiderstrui.

Departure from Jumbo-Visma

“I had the feeling that it was good to go to another team. It seemed somewhat contradictory because Jumbo-Visma is a very familiar team, with many acquaintances from the Rabobank era. But the team is changing, and my career is too short to leave something behind. I would have regretted it if I didn’t make a change.”

Friendship with Tao Geoghegan Hart

“It’s hard to explain, but I’ve known him since the first year when we were 17 or 18. We always competed against each other, but sometimes we also talked. Sometimes these conversations suddenly turned into very good talks, also off the bike. Then you know: we understand each other. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s different when you become teammates.”

It is impressive to observe how it took only 10 years for Jumbo-Visma to go from the lowest-ranked UCI WorldTeam to reaching the number one spot at the end of the 2022 season. The team is sponsored by Jumbo Supermarkets and Visma, a Norwegian software company.

Five New Riders

Five new riders of Jumbo-Visma 2023 men. Valter, Tratnik, Van Baarle, Kelderman, and Gloag on their bikes

Jumbo-Visma is known for its strong lineup of riders, which includes several top contenders for overall victories in Grand Tours. Some of the notable riders on the team include Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic, Wout Van Aert, Christophe Laporte, and Sep Kuss.

In 2022, the team has had success in both stage races and one-day classics, with riders such as Wout Van Aert, Primoz Roglic, and Jonas Vingegaard all winning major titles, including the Tour de France 2022.

For 2023, Jumbo-Visma is adding more strong riders to its squad. The five new riders are Dylan Van Baarle , ex- Ineos , winner of Paris-Roubaix 2022 (in front of Wout Van Aert). Van Baarle rides the same races as Wout Van Aert.

Wilco Kelderman , returning to Jumbo-Visma as he was part of the team during three seasons from 2013 to 2016. Kelderman has experience in Grand Tours racing with a top 5 General Classification (GC) finish on the three majors. His 2023 mission is to support Roglic on the Giro d’Italia.

Jan Tratnik , the Slovenia Individual Time Trial Champion has experience on Grand tours too and will be joining Roglic on the Giro d’Italia. Attila Valter , the young Hungarian has already raced three Giro d’Italia. His experience is likely to be used on one of the three Grand Tours.

Thomas Gloag is a young British rider who joined Jumbo-Visma as a trainee in August 2022. He is racing his first season as a WorldTour professional rider in 2023 and will certainly learn from the best.

The bikes of Jumbo-Visma 2023

sam oomen tour de france 2023

After winning the Tour de France 2022, Jumbo-Visma has been busy re-shuffling the 180 bikes set-up. That’s the number of bikes between the three Jumbo-Visma road bike teams.

In addition to its men’s team, Jumbo-Visma also fields a women’s team that competes at the UCI Women’s WorldTeam level.

For 2023, Jumbo-Visma is racing with the Cervelo R5, S5, Caledonia, and P5 for the Time Trial races. The SRAM Red 12-speed groupset replaces the Shimano Dura-Ace. The SRAM Red crankset features the integrated Quark PowerMeter.

The wheels are the Reserve , in Tubeless and Tubular type. They are rolling on the Vittoria tires. Mostly on the Vittoria Corsa Pro .

The pedals are the Wahoo Speedplay , and the cycling shoes are the handmade Nimbl , also replacing the Shimano Dura-Ace. The saddle and bar tape are from Fizik .

I am a bit surprised to not see the Time pedals on the Jumbo-Visma new bike setup, as SRAM bought the pedals in 2022.

Garmin remains the provider of GPS cycling computers. The riders of the team optimize their training with Supersapiens .

The riders of the Jumbo-Visma team wear Lazer Strada KinetiCore, Genesis, and Volante Kineticore helmets, Oakley sunglasses, Agu cycling jersey, and bib shorts.

You might also be interested in Jumbo-Visma TT hand-made cycling shoes .

As time goes, I will add more bike sizes linked with each rider’s name below. Make sure to check from time to time.

sam oomen tour de france 2023

Oomen was an 'average player' at Jumbo-Visma, but thanks to look-a-like and buddy Tao, hope now looms at Lidl-Trek.

Sam Oomen is spreading his wings, and how! After his breakthrough at the Dutch Team Sunweb and several disappointing years of bad luck at Dutch Jumbo-Visma, he now embarks on an adventure with the American cycling team Lidl-Trek. A notable transfer? Maybe, but maybe not. In the team of inspirer Bauke Mollema and good friend Tao Geoghegan Hart, Oomen might be able to find his way better.

Oomen is the man who, in 2018 as a domestique for Tom Dumoulin, finished ninth in the Giro d'Italia. He is the man who raced finals in Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy and finished top ten in major races like the Tirreno, Catalonia, Switzerland, and Poland. However, we haven't seen that Oomen much in recent years. After a broken hip, an operation on his groin artery, and a broken shoulder blade in 2023, it's time for the best Sam to resurface again.

At Lidl-Trek, Oomen came onto the radar thanks to Geoghegan Hart, who was brought in this winter as the leader from INEOS Grenadiers. Geoghegan Hart and Oomen: put two photos side by side, and from ten meters away, you can't tell who is who. Reddish hair, a mischievous face, sparkling eyes, and a narrow mouth. Both also born in 1995, and now teammates for the first time. "Sam's name did come up from Tao's side when we were talking to him. Sam's contract was expiring, and we were looking for such a type of rider, so it came together well," Steven de Jongh, team leader at Lidl-Trek, told IDLProCycling.com .

Friends or not, at Lidl-Trek, they brought Oomen in mainly because of his qualities. With only 28 years of life under his belt, De Jongh still sees a lot of potential. "Sam has had some problems and lacks some confidence. Hopefully, he will find that here again, along with a bit of fun." At Lidl-Trek, he is given full trust. What's more: De Jongh confesses that Oomen is on the shortlist of thirteen for the Tour de France. The leader there? Exactly: Geoghegan Hart. With this in mind, we start an intriguing interview with Sam himself...

The interview with Oomen starts below the photo!

Sam Oomen on Jumbo-Visma, his transfer and a misinterpreted interview

A new team, Sam... You already have a bit of experience with that, but how have the first weeks been?

'Well, the first weeks... Actually, this training camp is kind of a second week, because we had our first week in October in America. That was a team meeting. This is the first real week with the bike. It's hard to compare, but with all these new people, it is definitely out of the comfort zone."

Do you like that?

"I don't know if you can say it's fun to step out of your comfort zone, but afterwards, you are often glad that you did."

Was your departure from Jumbo-Visma a personal choice or were you forced to leave?

"I think it was a bit of both. We both had the feeling that it was good to go to another team. That felt somewhat contradictory to me because Jumbo-Visma is a very family-like team, with many familiar faces from the Rabobank era. The service course is just around the corner, so in that sense, it's hard to leave. But the team is changing, and my career is too short to miss out on something. I would have regretted it. I was just a very average player in the Jumbo-Visma team, I think. It's such a team of champions... I could keep up there and it's nice to belong somewhere, but you also want to be a bit special. I couldn't distinguish myself enough, and that's what I strive for."

What have you been promised at Lidl-Trek in that respect, that it will be so different from Jumbo-Visma?

"Promised is a big word, you just have to look at the teams. With all due respect, because Lidl-Trek is now a super strong and balanced team, but even then, there is a difference with Jumbo-Visma. There you have Jonas Vingegaard, a Tour de France winner, and the results in the grand tours speak for themselves. Those are such champions, they ride to win, and in my case, you quickly fall down the pecking order when it comes to personal chances or racing in finals."

Have you enjoyed the past year of Jumbo-Visma at all?

"Uh, well, cycling is of course a team sport, but there is a very large individual component to it. Then I think the enjoyment is greatest when you win as a team, and you're part of it. That was exceptional in the Giro d'Italia, so I really enjoyed that. That was very special, but it does have to do with the fact that I was there, to be honest."

In an interview on the Lidl-Trek website, when your transfer was announced, you said that the best years are still ahead of you...

"Yes, it's funny how that goes, quite typical. That's why I'm always a bit wary of interviews. That wasn't the gist of the story at all, but by moving a few words around, the whole tone of the thing changes. I said that - if mother nature does her job and you've seen the course of my career - there should be a few very strong years ahead of me. In that sense, I find it too early to throw away my own chances or the racing of finals for big leaders, because normally there should still be a few strong years coming up, in which I should be able to improve. Not to say that the strongest years are still ahead of me, because I am aware that my first year as a pro could have been my strongest year. I think that's an important detail because it was described differently in the interview. I'm glad you asked about it."

Sam Oomen on his "crooked head", Geoghegan Hart, and "inspiration" Mollema

Do you already know what you are going to do in terms of the program?

"No, no, not exactly. So I can't say much sensible about that yet.

Tao Geoghegan Hart and you are good friends, from the same generation and will ride in the same team. That's going to be difficult for us, when soon you guys are riding around in the peloton with helmets on...

"No, you're going to see the difference very clearly! I sit very differently and more crookedly on my bike and also have a crooked head. You're going to recognize that very easily, haha!"

I do have the title of my article now, though!

"Haha, yes, please be careful with it."

How fun is it to ride in the same team with him now?

"It's really great. It's hard to explain, but I've known him since our junior days, when you're 17 or 18 years old. We always raced against each other, but also chatted now and then. Sometimes those chats turned into really good conversations, even off the bike. Then you know: we really understand each other. That's really fun, but it's different when you're teammates. We were at this training camp in Spain, and then you quickly go out together. Suddenly you share everything and I find it very interesting that you share the same grief, being from the same year (1995, ed.)."

Did his move to Lidl-Trek play any part in your transfer here?

"That might very well be, although I don't know exactly. It's possible that he pushed hard for me, but you really shouldn't ask me. I do think it played a role."

You called Bauke Mollema an inspiration in the interview mentioned earlier. Can you explain why?

"Well, you just have to take a look at his track record... We just talked about the strong years that should still lie ahead for me, and I see him as the epitome of someone who, like a fine wine, gets better with the years. In 2023 he might have had a bit of a harder time, but I find it incredibly impressive that in the current cycling world full of youth and rejuvenation, he stays true to the old school romance. Bauke is super professional, but races with his heart, keeps his bike computer in his pocket, and keeps the bigger picture in mind. He doesn't lose himself in the details. That's becoming increasingly rare in cycling, even with nutrition and such. He's still one of the best cyclists in the world with that approach, and in 2019 he even won Lombardy. In Bauke's style, not with the highest power outputs. And I don't count myself among that category either. But I am someone who also loves the romance of cycling, of racing, and of hard work. Then you feel attracted to that."

Is that also the reason why you and Tao get along so well? I had an interview with him, and he talked a lot about social issues and those kind of things.

"Yes, last week we trained together for five hours, and we did talk about those kinds of things, yes. We share that sentiment."

Do you think that's lacking in cycling, or is it particularly nice that you find it so much in Tao and Bauke? At Jumbo-Visma, maybe it's a bit more about the numbers and nutrition...

"Yes, although it's not that there aren't guys there who also feel that way. I prefer to consider myself fortunate to be with men who have the same way of thinking, rather than becoming bitter about men who don't."

Hearing you talk, it sounds like you would really enjoy going to the Tour with Geoghegan Hart.

"Yes, that would be really frikking great!"

Have you already talked about it together while cycling?

"Yes, it does come up, although not a lot. That might sound a bit unbelievable, but we don't spend all our time talking about the Tour."

Is five hours of cycling with Tao Geoghegan Hart and Sam Oomen over in no time?

"In my opinion, yes it is."

Sam Oomen on racing in finals and the difference between Jumbo-Visma and Lidl-Trek

Have you noticed any differences between Jumbo-Visma and Lidl-Trek? I hear here from your teammates that you do want to close the gap with them...

"Perhaps later I will indeed come to the conclusion that the differences are not that big. Yet, there is a different culture here, although I was aware that this question would be asked. So far, it's more of a feeling that I can't quite explain, but it is different here."

Maybe also more international, since Jumbo-Visma is still Dutch-run after all?

"That's definitely a difference, yes, yes. During the races, I just don't know what it's going to be like yet."

Mollema and many others have been riding here for years, that says something, doesn't it?

"I think that's a fair comment. Bauke is known as someone who likes to deviate a bit from the norm, to whatever extent it exists. He is a personality, and it's no coincidence that he wants to ride here until he's forty."

Would you like that too, to be a pro until age 40?

"As long as you keep growing, can pursue ambitions, and are satisfied with yourself and the world around you... And you still see a lot of growth when you're 33 or 34, then I understand why you would continue. The chance is just not that big, so Bauke is an exceptional case for me."

Final question: when would your 2024 have been successful?

"It would be really great to participate in the finals of the biggest races and play a significant role. For myself, but especially for guys like Tao, or Skjelmose, Ciccone, or Pedersen. If you can play a distinctive role in such races, that's what really gets my blood pumping. That would be very cool."

Oomen was an 'average player' at Jumbo-Visma, but thanks to look-a-like and buddy Tao, hope now looms at Lidl-Trek.

CYCLING VUELTA TOUR OF SPAIN STAGE 18

I started this post like three weeks ago — interrupted by real life family stuff** — and it was going around in circles a bit. Like, lots of teams had roster shakeups, like every year, plus a few new sponsors and whatnot. We almost had MergerMaNiA take over, but then we didn’t. It was just kind of a swirling mess of news. If only there was one news item that could make it clear who the big winners were...

NEWS ️ Cian Uijtdebroeks will join our team. The 20-year-old Belgian signs a four-year contract until 2027. Welcome, Cian! #cian2027 pic.twitter.com/rLbVwqFu3g — Team Jumbo-Visma cycling (@JumboVismaRoad) December 9, 2023

Oh. Oh my god! Yeah, I think that will do it! The biggest team, reorganized, merged and then unmerged and then rebranded and where was this all going? Oh, right, they just picked up the one true new Belgian Climbing Sensation (BCS) and put a big giant exclamation point on the entire sport of cycling.

Of course, that’s assuming you can believe everything you read on Twitter. And even if you do, well, here is another thing.

Statement concerning today's news from Jumbo - Visma regarding our rider Cian Uijtdebroeks Cian is and will remain a member of BORA - hansgrohe, also in the coming 2024 season. He is contractually bound with us until 31 December 2024. — BORA – hansgrohe (@BORAhansgrohe) December 9, 2023

Hot Damn!! We have ourselves a spicy conclusion to 2023, and I’m not just talking about the upcoming Kerstperiode Cyclocross Showdown! Clearly BORA knows if they have a contract or not, and as a lawyer I can tell you, you don’t tip your hand like this unless you are sure it’s actually your hand. It may just signal the start of a negotiation — Jumbo too aren’t stupid and probably know how this ends — but buckle up and don’t unsubscribe from any Belgian sports media accounts you follow. Especially the ones that now say that things may have gotten rather divisive behind the scenes at BORA.

Thijs Zonneveld: BORA riders had an ''anti-Cian' app group during the Vuelta. ”Without Uijtdebroeks in it, so they could gossip about him." Not surprised he wanted to leave if this is the case. Bullying is not cool especially when they're grown ass men. https://t.co/X8mpmocoZ4 — Katy M (@writebikerepeat) December 12, 2023

Oh, and maybe this is all a needless Belgiophilic distraction from the real news:

One of pro cycling’s next megastars Albert Withen Philipsen will ride for Lidl-Trek in 2025 after signing a four-year deal - the Dane was crowned the youngest ever junior men’s road race world champion at just 16 years old earlier this year pic.twitter.com/fRY6jA1mA0 — Velon CC (@VelonCC) December 8, 2023

Cool! Although we should all probably give the kid a few minutes to make the adjustment, since he just turned 17 in September.

Anyway, let’s dive in a little deeper before we hand over the Offseason Winners’ Trophy. Here are some teams with critical changes happening, and what it all means. Oh, and winning the offseason is very often code for “making a big stink for attention only for it to blow up spectacularly once the actual races begin,” so yeah.

[** As for me, I’m OK; just have aging parent stuff to work through. Probably just about all of you know what it’s like.]

Who at least Tried To Win The Offseason?

Lots of teams. Everyone has a bunch of roster changes, and we will just barely skim over the biggest names involved here. Everyone has a new kit and we will spend plenty of time obsessing over fashion later. But in a rather summary manner, here is what stands out from the offseason, from the teams who had enough change to warrant even talking about.

35th Tour de l’Ain 2023 - Stage 3

Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale

Highlights:

  • Decathlon becomes title sponsor
  • Added development team
  • Incoming: Sam Bennett, Victor Lafay
  • Outgoing: Greg Van Avermaet

The Decathlon major sponsorship is a big deal, a five year move involving the sporting goods retailer putting... well, it’s not clear as usual, but the vibes suggest a firm investment, with chatter about Decathlon becoming a global brand. [Apparently they’re already ubiquitous in Europe.] Adding a formal dev team is also a big benefit to the top guys, not only as talented kids get with the program and eventually join the World Tour fun, but just for filling out some of the smaller race rosters. Van Avermaet’s retirement was more or less due, and Sam Bennett will get them a few palmares, but mostly the team seems set up for the long term.

Astana Qazakhstan Team

  • Vino’s kid gets the call-up!
  • Lots of old guys move on out

OK, this might not be enough to win the offseason. They did actually bring in a lot of riders, including point-scoring vets Ide Schelling and Lorenzo Fortunato, plus a boat-load of kids. We will get into the newbies later in winter. Astana do get a point for turning over a large part of their roster because, well, the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one.

Arkea-B&B Hotels

  • B&B Hotels becomes secondary title sponsor
  • Also added development team!
  • Claims Arthurian Legend as team vibe
  • Incoming: Vincenzo Albanese, Raul Garcia
  • Outgoing: Warren Barguil, Hugo Hoffstetter

I cannot emphasize this enough... this team’s mission is to reclaim Arthurian legends for Brittany! Everyone has a story to tell, but these guys are going big with it. They are not — repeat NOT — messing around:

No transfer could possibly feel like a bigger story than basically the biggest story in Christendom since Adam and Eve.

Bahrain Victorious

  • Incoming: Alberto Bruttomesso, Finlay Pickering
  • Outgoing: Mikel Landa, Johnny Milan

Next year has to be better than 2023, which consisted largely with the team coping — sometimes beautifully — with the tragic death of Gino Mäder. Some nice pickups on the youth side, which follows on the mid-season acquisition of Antonio Tiberi, who put up good results after getting bounced from Trek for killing a cat. It’s safe to say that just changing the conversation and turning the page is the highlight of the offseason right now. Oh, and Alberto Bruttomesso’s surname translates to either ugly mess or bad situation. Maybe hiring him is a way to exorcise the team’s demons. Last summer they unveiled their “pearl” look which will continue and sponsor Bapco Energies will either use the sport’s humanizing forces to elevate its transition from oil and gas to sustainable (solar) energy... or to at least sportswash their sins.

Blanco (a/k/a Visma-Lease a Bike)

  • Flirted with QS merger
  • Replaced sponsor Jumbo with Lease a Bike
  • Incoming: Matteo Jorgensen, Ben Tulett, Cian Uijtdebroeks
  • Outgoing: Primoz Roglic, Sam Oomen, Tobias Foss

It was a wild media ride, if not in more concrete terms, for the former Jumbo Visma team, who are conveniently and somewhat nostalgically licensed under “Blanco.” Jumbo supermarkets ended their commitment, which led the team to contemplate the mega-merger with Quick Step that everyone was talking about, only for that to fizzle and for the Pom Group conglomerate to offer up its holdings like Lease a Bike, Cervélo, and probably some car brands they import to the Netherlands on a sleeve somewhere. Meanwhile, they did the necessary work of splitting with Roglic before he went completely rogue, only for his arrival at BORA (and assorted other hostilities) to nudge Uitdebroeks out the door. Now the 20-year-old Belgian can hone his craft at the world’s greatest team, with great leaders and minimal pressure — a trade that could keep the V-LAB’s Tour de France window open indefinitely. Oh, love the Jorgensen signing too.

117th Il Lombardia 2023

BORA-Hansgrohe

  • Incoming: Primož Roglič, Dani Martinez, Matteo Sobrero
  • Outgoing: Sam Bennett, Cian Uijtdebroeks

This is a pretty extreme makeover, in the parlance of modern pop culture, but mostly people will talk about one thing: the arrival of Primož. The decorated Slovenian grand tour specialist and his new German squad go together like oil and vinegar — which is to say, brilliantly, with some extra ingredients and a vigorous shaking. Everyone knows it will take heroic team support to push the somewhat predictable (for my taste) Roglič past his former teammates and other Tour challengers, at age 34 and with no results in France since the 2020 disaster. But there is little question that he will be among the top riders and very hard to dispatch, especially with experienced, high level support from maybe DaniMart or Ale Vlasov. The loss of Uitdebroeks might be sensational and painful down the road, but for now, BORA have a happier story they are ready to tell. Interesting note about how they haven’t done any new sponsor deals to bring in Rogs, they just used cash they had squirreled away in recent years. Cycling teams save money ?!?

EF Education-EasyPost

  • Valgren returns
  • Incoming: New kids Mikel Beloki, Darren Rafferty, Archie Ryan
  • Outgoing: Magnus Cort Nielsen

It’s been 18 months since Michael Valgren, former Amstel and Omloop winner, fractured his pelvis in a crash at the Route Occitaine, and after a year of easing himself back in via the EF development team, the Danish all-rounder has returned! This should give the otherwise lightly-changed EF team a morale boost? Oh, and yeah, that’s Joseba’s kid coming on board.

  • Management changes
  • Futile chase for more stars
  • Outgoing: Ben Tulett, Tao Hart, Dani Martinez, Lucas Plapp, Pavel Sivakov

This is a bit more of a courtesy entry than a case for them actually winning, but nobody can say they didn’t try. INEOS for sure tried to lure Roglic to take their lead spot in the grand tours, and at least some people were anxious to contemplate Remco Evenepoel jumping ship, if maybe not Evenepoel himself. They may have also been in the bidding for Uijtdebroeks. In the end the biggest actual news was who left, from director Rod Ellingworth to the quintet of solid riders listed above.

Nairo Quintana Returns To Movistar Team

  • Incoming: Nairo Quintana, Pelayo Sanchez, Javier Romo
  • Outgoing: Matteo Jorgensen, Carlos Verona

Wait what?! The ReNai(ro)ssance certainly counts as one of the offseason’s more colorful stories, even if nobody (including team boss Eusebio Unzue) thinks it will make a big difference. Enric Mas needs all the help he can get, however, and maybe Quintana has a few big days left in his legs, after last year’s idling. And then there are always some Spanish kids to dream on, including the Vuelta’s big stage-hunter Sanchez.

Team dsm-firmenech - PostNL

  • PostNL sponsors squad for 3 years
  • Incoming: Fabio Jakobsen
  • Outgoing: Alberto Dainese, Andreas Leknessund

Probably still not as good as their women’s squad, although Jakobsen will give them a real sense of purpose. The PostNL money helps them level up, be it as Jakobsen’s squad or something more diverse.

42nd Vuelta a Burgos 2020 - Stage 5

Soudal Quick Step

  • Evenepoel stays; merger fizzles
  • Incoming: Mikel Landa, Gianni Moscon, William Lecerf
  • Outgoing: Fabio Jakobsen, Andrea Bagioli

Firming up what they felt good about is as big a win as this team is going to see right now. They warded off a raid of their prime asset, Evenepoel, who was occasionally rumored to INEOS in a move that was only possible in the case of a merger. When the Jumbo-Quick Step merger fell apart, Evenepoel’s contract remained intact, and he shut down the speculation that didn’t really come from him in the first place. Moscon and Landa should give him a bit more protection in grand tours, specifically the Tour de France, which Remco is supposed to finally take on next year. Lecerf is a major prospect and could be a climbing asset sooner rather than later. Even Jakobsen’s departure just clears up the obvious role for Tim Merlier. Lefevre is fighting a losing economic battle but for now the team has held its still-lofty position in the peloton.

96th UCI Cycling World Championships Glasgow 2023 – Day 3

  • Lidl sponsorship last summer
  • Another new development team!
  • Incoming: Albert Philipsen, Andrea Bagioli, Tao Hart, Johnny Milan, Carlos Verona
  • Outgoing: Filippo Baroncini

It happened six months ago, but Trek’s sponsorship deal with German supermarket chain Lidl has really rejuvenated the franchise, which was a big player a decade ago under the Leopard and Radio Shack names. Both the men’s and women’s teams were able to add quality riders, and even if Tao Geoghegan Hart isn’t likely to beat Pogs aind Vingo, he will give the team a presence in the GC at the Tour. Bagioli, meanwhile, is already a climbing classics ace, capping his age-24 season with second in Lombardia. But as noted above, the biggest get may be the Dane Philipsen, a junior world champion on both the road and MTB, and European ITT champ to boot. He profiles as an all-round type who some are already calling the next Pogacar, as if that were at all a responsible thing to say. Given that all the big WT squads wanted him, Lidl-Trek sealing the deal is for sure a big win.

UCI Cycling World Championships 2023 - Day Nine - Glasgow

UAE Emirates Team

  • Another new development team... UAE Emirates Gen Z!
  • Incoming: Antonio Thomas Morgado, Nils Politt, Pavel Sivakov
  • Outgoing: George Bennett, Davide Formolo, Pascal Ackermann

Morgado was the runner-up at the U23 worlds. Politt and Sivakov give some depth to Pogacar as he chases his next monument or maillot jaune. Having a development team is a wise use of their considerable funds.

So Who Won?

I’ll let you guys vote, but for me the contenders are Jumbo, Lidl-Trek and BORA.

Who won the 2023-24 Cycling offseason?
