San Francisco Movie Tour

Jill at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler

Do you love movies? Are you curious to see where some of the most famous ones where shot in San Francisco?

If so, then take a ride on the movie tour bus.

This tour doesn't just point out the places where certain scenes were shot. They show you the clips as you slowly cruise past each location in person.

On this three-hour journey, you will get the chance to see the exact spot where scenes from more than 50 movies were filmed. Some of these include classic films such as Vertigo, Dirty Harry and The Graduate.

Others shot here include The Rock, The Princess Diaries, The Social Network and Interview with a Vampire.

I loved this tour as they did an amazing job synchronizing the clips with the locations. At times, I felt like a star that just stepped off the movie set.

This is why I think this well-choreographed trip is a must for all movie lovers!

Your adventure starts in Fisherman's Wharf . Within seconds, you pass by the location of the very first scene.

As you cruise the neighborhood, you see places where films such as the Birdman of Alcatraz, A View to a Kill and When a Man Loves a Woman shot scenes.

From here, you then venture into the infamous North Beach neighborhood .

Almost a dozen shows used backdrops from this gorgeous district including Nine Months, Dirty Harry and Mrs. Doubtfire.

The screen showing film clips on the movie tour bus

Your journey then takes you through the Financial District and Union Square . You drive past the bar where The Jazz Singer (1927) was filmed.

You also see the spot where scenes from Rent and Interview with a Vampire occurred.

You then head down Market Street toward City Hall.

This amazing structure has been used in several shows including Milk, Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark, and A View to a Kill.

City Hall is the first of four stops on this San Francisco movie tour.

Not only do you get to see where several films were shot outside, but you also get the chance to spend a little time (on your own) inside.

It's free to enter and one of the most interesting buildings in SF.

The marble steps inside City Hall

After your 20-minute break, you will jump back on the bus and continue to the Haight Ashbury district .

Here you will drive by the houses where The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin once lived.

As you head west, you pass through Golden Gate Park where scenes from Star Trek IV: A Voyage Home, Dirty Harry and The Woman in Red were shot.

You will then head north to the Presidio .

Here you get another quick 5-minute photo break at Inspiration Point.

More than a dozen shows used the Presidio for scenes.

Here you will see where clips from Zodiac, Murder in the First and Escape from Alcatraz were shot.

The next highlight is the Golden Gate Bridge.

This famous attraction is seen in several movies from Herbie Rides Again to Star Trek.

Right below the bridge at Fort Point is your fourth stop.

Here you will take a 15-minute break. You can also get some amazing photos of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The final part of your adventure takes you through Pacific Heights .

Famous scenes shot here include The Princess Diaries, Basic Instinct and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators shut down airport highways and key bridges in major US cities

CHICAGO (AP) — Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked roadways in Illinois, California, New York and the Pacific Northwest on Monday, temporarily shutting down travel into some of the nation’s most heavily used airports, onto the Golden Gate and Brooklyn bridges and on a busy West Coast highway.

In Chicago, protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 leading into O’Hare International Airport around 7 a.m. in a demonstration they said was part of a global “economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to Rifqa Falaneh, one of the organizers.

Traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area was snarled for hours as demonstrators shut down all vehicle, pedestrian and bike traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge and chained themselves to 55-gallon drums filled with cement across Interstate 880 in Oakland. Protesters marching into Brooklyn blocked Manhattan-bound traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. In Eugene, Oregon, protesters blocked Interstate 5, shutting down traffic on the major highway for about 45 minutes.

Protesters say they chose O’Hare in part because it is one of the largest airports. Among other things, they’ve called for an immediate cease-fire in the war between Israel and Hamas.

Anti-war protesters have demonstrated in Chicago near daily since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Israeli warplanes and ground troops have since conducted a scorched-earth campaign on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive has killed more than 33,700 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

O’Hare warned travelers on the social platform X to take alternative forms of transportation with car travel “substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity.”

Some travelers stuck in standstill traffic left their cars and walked the final leg to the airport along the freeway, trailing their luggage behind them.

Among them was Madeline Hannan from suburban Chicago. She was headed to O’Hare for a work trip to Florida when her and her husband’s car ended up stalled for 20 minutes. She got out and “both ran and speed walked” more than a mile (1.6 kilometers). She said she made it to the gate on time, but barely.

“This was an inconvenience,” she said in a telephone interview from Florida. “But in the grand scheme of things going on overseas, it’s a minor inconvenience.”

While individual travelers may have been affected, operations at the airport appeared near normal with delays of under 15 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Inbound traffic toward O’Hare resumed around 9 a.m.

Near Seattle, the Washington State Department of Transportation said a demonstration closed the main road to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Social media posts showed people holding a banner and waving Palestinian flags while standing on the highway, which reopened about three hours later.

About 20 protesters were arrested at the Golden Gate Bridge demonstration and traffic resumed shortly after noon, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said officers were making arrests at two points on the interstate, including one spot where roughly 300 protesters refused orders to disperse,

“Attempting to block or shut down a freeway or state highway to protest is unlawful, dangerous, and prevents motorists from safely reaching their destinations,” the agency said in a statement.

Oregon State Police said 52 protestors were were arrested for disorderly conduct following the Interstate 5 protest in Eugene, Oregon, about 110 miles (177 kilometers) south of Portland. Six vehicles were towed from the scene.

New York Police made numerous arrests, saying 150 protesters were initially involved in the march around 3:15 p.m., but that number quickly grew. The bridge was fully reopened by 5 p.m.

In Chicago, dozens of protesters were arrested, according to Falaneh. Chicago police said Monday that “multiple people” were taken into custody after a protest where people obstructed traffic, but they did not have a detailed count.

Associated Press writers Janie Har in San Francisco, Claire Rush in Portland, Oregon; Pat Eaton-Robb in Hartford, Connecticut and Audrey McAvoy in Honolulu contributed to this report.

Travel | staying in cali: los angeles sparks select stanford star cameron brink second overall in wnba draft, travel | everything you need to know about traveling in the summer of 2024 .

Summer travel in 2024 will be expensive in every way, but even more so if there's a Taylor Swift show in town when you are. (Illustration by Aren Elliott)

Summer travel in 2024 will be “expensive in every way,” says Katharine Nohr. And she should know.

She’s planning a two-week adventure to Europe in June, which starts with a marathon flight from Honolulu to Zurich, where she’ll speak at a conference. Then she’s hopscotching across Europe — to Vienna, then on to the Olympics. She’s made plans to be in Nantes, France, to watch a soccer game, Lille for basketball and Paris for gymnastics, boxing and swimming.

All told, it’ll set her back five figures despite her best efforts, which include flying economy class and staying in the lowest-priced hotels.

Christopher Elliott, the Travel Troubleshooter ...

“The trip is pricey, even with my efforts to economize,” says Nohr, an attorney from Honolulu. “But it’s a once-in-my-life adventure.”

Summer travelers are pursuing exciting, expensive vacations

Nohr is part of a wave of travelers that are making big plans for this summer. The itineraries are exciting — and expensive.

Pretty much every barometer of travel intent is up for the summer travel season. Inflation and unemployment are low, and consumer sentiment and curiosity are high, fueling an unprecedented interest in travel during the summer of 2024.

“Bookings are rising,” says Susan Sherren, who runs Couture Trips , a travel agency. “Unfortunately, hotel, tour, and air prices are not falling. So, if you plan on hitting the road this summer, make sure you are willing to splash some cash.”

Travel companies say they’re overwhelmed with summer reservations.

“The travel economy is booming,” says Joe Ialacci, owner of Yacht Hampton Boating Club, a company that rents yachts in Sag Harbor, N.Y. He’s seeing a 40 percent increase in rentals this summer compared to last year as Americans shift some of their vacation dollars to domestic destinations.

Prices aren’t the only thing trending higher. People’s expectations for their summer vacation are also higher than at any time since the pandemic, says Sangeeta Sadarangani, CEO of Crossing , a multinational travel agency headquartered in London.

“They’re embracing the unknown,” she says.

And one of the great unknowns is travel prices. How much higher will they be?

What will prices be like this summer?

It depends on where you’re going. There’s good news if you’re traveling within the U.S.: flights and hotels are a little less expensive than last summer. But they’re rising elsewhere. Here’s the breakdown:

Airfares are mixed. Domestic roundtrip airfares for summer are averaging $325 per ticket, which is down 5 percent from last year, according to the travel platform Hopper. Flights to Europe are cheaper, too. They’ve fallen 12 percent from last year to $1,012. But flights to South America are up 4 percent and flights to Canada have risen 5 percent. You’ll pay an average of $759 to fly south of the border and $430 to head north.

U.S. hotel rates are down. Domestically, they’re down 7 percent to an average of $304 per night. Internationally, they’re up 2 percent to $314 per night, according to Kayak.

Car rental prices are rising. Average domestic car rental rates are up 10 percent this summer to $113 per day, according to Kayak.  Last summer, rates dropped 14 percent after the car rental shortage ended. Internationally, rates are up 3 percent to an average of $88 per day.

But you can avoid the high prices with a little strategic planning, experts say.

What to avoid this summer

American travelers are becoming more predictable in their summer vacation choices, says John Lovell, president of Travel Leaders Group . Immediately after the pandemic, they embarked on “revenge” vacations to far-flung locations. Now they’re returning to more conventional vacations.

“We continue to see U.S. travelers heading back to the more traditional locations across Europe this year, like London, Rome, Athens and Munich,” he says.

But there are places that will be exceptionally busy — and exceptionally pricey — this summer.

Paris during the Olympics. The Olympic Games are taking place in Paris this summer. Rooms are more than double the normal rates. which is typical of the Olympics. Paris is already crowded with tourists during the summer, so you can probably imagine what it will be like with the Olympics. Zut, alors!

Taylor Swift is touring Europe this summer. Prices will be higher and the crowds will be denser. “If you aren’t planning to attend one of her concerts, I recommend planning around those European cities when she’s there,” says Betsy Ball, co-founder of Euro Travel Coach . (Want to know if your schedules overlap? Here’s Taylor Swift’s concert schedule .)

Other big summer events. Even if you steer clear of Taylor and the Olympics, you’re still not out of the woods. There’s the UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament in Germany in June. There’s the Tour de France in July, which begins in Florence and finishes in Nice. France is also hosting the Paralympic Games in August and September, which will take place in Paris, Nice, Marseille and Bordeaux.

When is the best time to book a 2024 summer vacation?

Since this is going to be a busy one, the sooner you book, the better. Hopper recommends buying your airfare two to three months before your departure for domestic flights, and for international — well, it’s probably too late to get that rock-bottom fare. If you’re reading this in April, you can still find something for late August or early September, according to airfare experts.

As always, you can save money by booking a flight for midweek instead of on the weekend — and, of course, by keeping far, far away from the big travel holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day.

Also, if you’re going overseas, remember their holiday calendar is different. For example, half of Europe shuts down during August for summer vacation. It’s worth a look-up, otherwise, you could face some real disappointments.

Strategies for traveling better during the summer

One tactic that consistently works is splitting your getaway into two sections. Take that required summer vacation with your family somewhere less expensive during the high season. Then, wait until shoulder season for the big trip.

That’s what Ross Copas, a retired electrician from Tweed, Canada, is doing during the summer of 2024. It’s a road trip across the northern U.S. by motorcycle — New York to Washington State and then back east through Canada.

Then he’s heading to Amsterdam in September for a 23-day European river cruise. He says the late summer getaway will be costly, but he doubts fares will fall anytime soon. “So price be damned,” he adds.

With hotel rates rising in some places this summer, this is the right time to consider alternatives. Monica Fish, a writer from Glen Rock, N.J., is headed to Ireland to catch one of Taylor Swift’s performances. She says hotel rooms in Dublin are overpriced, if they’re even available. But Fish found an affordable vacation rental.

“We just had to book it farther in advance than we normally would,” she says.

Go ahead, follow the crowds this summer

I’ll be following the crowds this summer. I’m planning to rent an apartment for a month in Switzerland with Blueground, a long-term apartment rental company. Then I’m crashing on a friend’s sofa in Spain, then heading to Sweden to see other friends and visiting my brother in Finland. Yes, travel writers know people everywhere.

But don’t follow the crowds off a cliff. There are places even I won’t go. I might take the four-hour train trip from Zurich to Paris in June to check out my favorite patisseries, but I wouldn’t go anywhere near the City of Lights during the summer games in July unless I made a reservation a long time ago.

And Taylor Swift? Puh-leeze. I’m more of a jazz guy.

Model Winnie Harlow Is Selling Her Stylish SoCal Home for $3.7M

Canadian model Winnie Harlow has listed her stylish pad in Tarzana, CA , a suburban neighborhood of Los Angeles , for $3,695,000.

Harlow, her professional moniker ( Chantelle Whitney Brown-Young is her given name), is more than just a pretty face. She’s also an advocate for vitiligo awareness. The skin condition, which Harlow has had since childhood, causes loss of color in patches.

Harlow purchased the five-bedroom, six-bath property at the end of  2020 for $3,289,000.

She gushed about the home on Instagram : “Going into 2021 a first time HOME OWNER,” she posted next to snaps of herself in her new pad. “I’ve lived in apartments my whole life. I never thought at 26 I’d be a home owner.”

But now, the model is looking to sashay away from the nearly 4,300-square-foot abode for a small profit. Here’s a look at the pretty details inside.

The modern farmhouse oozes elegance throughout the open floor plan. The main room features a fireplace, oak flooring, fancy light fixtures, a coffered ceiling, and crown molding.

The well-equipped kitchen is easy on the eyes, thanks to the stone counters, farm-style sink, Thermador appliances, and walk-in pantry. The family room has a fireplace, bar, wine cellar, and access to the lovely rear yard.

A lofty ceiling crowns the primary bedroom, which has a fireplace, private balcony, and two walk-in closets. The main bath is equally elegant with its oval soaking tub and spacious steam shower.

Outside, there’s a covered patio, fire pit, and pool and spa with a waterfall. The fenced yard has high hedges for additional privacy.

The home is equipped with indoor-outdoor surround sound, smart technology, and security cameras.

Harlow burst onto the scene as a contestant on “America’s Next Top Model” in 2014. She was the first model with vitiligo to appear in a fashion show for Victoria’s Secret.

Harlow has also appeared in a few music videos, including Beyoncé’s “Lemonade,” and launched a skin care line in 2022 called Cay Skin.
