Field trip programs, farm senses.

Age Groups: Preschool Program Times: 1 ½ to 2 hours (Morning or Afternoon), with the option for lunch before or after program times Price: $8 per participant & $8 adult chaperones

Children interact with our plants and animals during opportunities designed to engage all five senses. Children visit and pet chickens, equines, sheep, and rabbits, as available, as well as enjoy our vegetable and flower gardens. Tasting, touching, smelling, hearing, and seeing GHF plants and animals gives children a whole new level of understanding about farming and the natural world as well as a foundation for scientific learning.

Food Sources

Age Groups: Kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 Program Times: 2 hours  (Morning or Afternoon), with the option for lunch before or after program times Price: $8 per participant & $8 adult;  4-hour Food Sources may be scheduled at $10 per person

Students discover how their basic needs are fulfilled by a farm when they witness food and fiber while it’s still growing. Through observation and hands-on activities, students also see how the needs of crops and farm animals are met on the farm. This program includes activities such as collecting fresh eggs, grinding animal feed, meeting and petting animals, planting and tasting seasonal vegetables, and searching for pollinators.

Structure & Function

Age Groups: Grade 2, Grade 3, and Grade 4 Program Times: 3 ½ hours – 4 hours (full day), with time for lunch included during the day Price: $10 per participant & $10 adult

Students explore several areas of the farm through interactive lessons and games. They experience the structure and function of farmyard animals, farming equipment, crops, and the compost pile, and how these structures support the function of growing food. This program helps students understand that healthy soil is the most important structure on a farm and the way that all life is connected.

Local Ohio History

school field trips cincinnati ohio

Through historical interpretation, students uncover how the Gorman family grew their own food and lived on this land through different time periods from 1835 to the present, and how this local history of agriculture is an important part of Ohio history. Students take part in chores that children of the Gorman family would have done and learn to how make a handmade toy or craft to bring the history lesson home.

Soil Health: Inquiry-Based Learning

Age Group: Grade 5+ Program Times: 4 hours (full day), time for lunch included during the day Price: $10 per participant & $10 adult

The big idea of this program is the importance of healthy soil in food production, revealing how plants and soil are interconnected to generate healthy food. Using scientific instruments and methods, students review the process of photosynthesis, learn the basic concept of pH, take soil samples, test soil pH and research a student-created hypothesis using the scientific method.

Bring history to life with field trips and programs at the Ohio History Center and Ohio Village!

Visit the Ohio History Center, the state's repository for comprehensive collections of materials in the fields of history, prehistory and natural history. It also houses the state's archives and historical library.

Walk the streets of Ohio Village, a reproduction of a small Ohio community during the 1800s. The buildings form the commercial, social and political core of a town and represent several architectural styles of Ohio's history. The furnishings and tools in the various buildings used by the Ohio Villagers are either original pieces or carefully researched reproductions. The buildings and streets set the stage for its citizens to tell the story of the economic, social and political life in Ohio during the 1800s.

Homeschool Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register for Cincinnati Nature Center programs?

A listing of current programs can be found above. All registrations for programs are taken online by registering using the link above or by registering using our online  calendar   on our website.

Do I need to register and pay for my child that is underage?

Underage participants : All students ages 3 and up have to register and pay. If the program is age specific, we ask you to respect the age parameters.

Underage observers : If you have a younger sibling (below age 3) who will attend a program as an  observer only , please do not register that child. We welcome younger siblings as observers under the care of a parent/caregiver, but they may not participate in the program. Please be sure children who are not registered for the program are not a distraction to those attending the program. Please read the program description carefully to help you decide whether or not your younger child could observe the program without hindering the program.

As a parent/caregiver, do I need to register myself for the program?

Yes, parents/caregivers need to register for homeschool programs at Cincinnati Nature Center. Group size is limited for homeschool programs to provide a safe atmosphere for learning. Parents/caregivers should register and pay for the spot that they are taking in the program.

Do I need to stay with my child?

Parents/Caregivers are mentors : Cincinnati Nature Center is all about empowering parents/caregivers and other adults to help young people develop an interest in and passion for the natural world. For all homeschool programs at the Nature Center, parents/caregivers are viewed as teachers and are asked to participate in the experience with their children. Many programs will be partially led by homeschool parents/caregivers.

Designated overseer : If a parent/caregiver is unable to attend an event, the child may attend a program with an adult designated to oversee the experience of the child (for example: grandparent, another homeschool parent/caregiver, etc.). We request that one adult oversee no more than six children.

May I arrive late for the program?

Out of respect for other participants, we ask that you arrive before the listed program start time.

Teacher faces termination after calling in sick for 2 days to attend a concert in Nashville, district says

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, Ohio ( WXIX /Gray News) – A high school English teacher in Ohio is facing termination after she allegedly called out of work sick for two days to attend a concert in Nashville, Tennessee, district records show.

Eileen Washburn, an English teacher at Lakota West High School in the Lakota Local School District , is currently on unpaid leave as she faces potential termination.

Not only is Washburn a teacher, but she is also a member of the board of education at another nearby school district, Loveland City School District, according to its website .

Both districts are in the northern suburbs of Cincinnati.

At a board meeting this week for Lakota Local Schools, where Washburn teaches, board members voted to keep Washburn on unpaid leave until their next meeting, when they will vote on her termination.

Documents from the board meeting say that Washburn “falsified sick leave” on Feb. 8 and 9, and that Washburn told several colleagues that she was attending a concert in Nashville.

The school board said Washburn refused to answer questions regarding her whereabouts during that time and refused to discuss specifics on her alleged need for sick leave.

Interim Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli recommended that the board continue Washburn’s current suspension without pay and then vote to terminate her at their next meeting on April 22, unless “Washburn files a written demand for a hearing within the time required,” documents show.

WXIX has reached out to Washburn for comment.

Staying another day in Bloomington? These are some of our favorite places to visit

school field trips cincinnati ohio

For those who decided to stay another day after Monday's solar eclipse, there are plenty of options if you're looking for something to do.

Here's a list of some of our favorite places to visit:

Learn about solar eclipses over Bloomington

Want to learn more about solar eclipses? The Monroe County History Center , at 202 E. Sixth St., has an exhibit "Bloomington Total Solar Eclipses — 1869 & 2024." The center is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for kids. The exhibit compares the scientific, social and pop cultural responses to eclipses that happened 115 years apart.

Get you fill of IU athletics history

You don't have to be a Hoosiers fan to enjoy a visit to Cook Hall in the lobby entryway of the practice building next to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall , 1051 E. 17th St. The facility is home to the Pfau Shine Legacy Court, a museum and exhibit space that has photographs, trophies and other items celebrating IU teams, especially basketball. If the doors are open, check it out. Usually only the lobby area is open to the public.

Visit one of the largest student unions in the world

Another amazing IU building to check out is the Indiana Memorial Union at 900 E. Seventh St. The limestone building faces Campus River and Dunn Meadow and has restaurants (The Vault Pub, Tudor Room, The Globe, Lantern, The Mix, Starbucks, Quarry Pie Co., Whitfield Grill and Sugar and Spice Bakery), a bowling alley, billiards, bookstore and lots of rooms — including one with a fireplace and several with statues. Amazing artwork is displayed throughout.

Take the kids on a science-based field trip

Didn't take your kids to WonderLab Museum of Science, Health and Technology for the eclipse? It's worth a visit. From a special toddler and preschool area to hands-on exhibits and up-close chances to learn about snakes and fish, it's a great place to learn and play. Tickets are $14.50 per person for non-members. Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday. It's at 308 W. Fourth St.

Catch a Hoosiers baseball game

Watch Bloomington High School North's Sam Klein, now with Ball State, take on Indiana University's baseball team at 6 p.m. April 9 at Bart Kaufman Stadium. The Hoosier team is 16-14 overall right now and 1-2 in the Big Ten conference.

Walk or bike through a park and downtown Bloomington

If outdoors is where you want to be, you can walk or bike along the B-Line Trail through Bloomington. You'll walk or bike past houses, businesses, restaurants and can travel through Switchyard Park . The trail connects with several others, including Bloomington Rail Trail to the south at Country Club Drive (with parking at West Church Lane and West Country Club Road). If you walk the Rail Trail south, you'll connect with the Clear Creek Trail , which can be accessed on the north side along West Tapp Road and also at West That Road.

Spend the day playing disc golf and more at local parks

Bloomington and Monroe County have great parks, from Karst Farm Park, 2450 S. Endwright Road, on Bloomington's west side to Switchyard Park and Bryan Park in the city limits. Karst Farm has a disc golf course, trails and picnic shelters. Switchyard Park, 1601 S. Rogers St., has basketball courts, a skate park, picnic areas, dog parks and a kids' playground. Bryan Park, 1020 S. Woodlawn Ave., has a kids' playground, trails, picnic shelters, basketball courts and tennis courts. There are other city parks worth checking out, too: bloomington.in.gov/parks/parks .

Get in touch with nature at Griffy Lake or Lake Monroe

Like to hike, boat or fish? Head to either Griffy Lake Nature Preserve on Bloomington's north side (3595 N. Headley Road) or to Lake Monroe , which offers several recreation areas where you can do everything from rent a kayak or pontoon boat to hiking trails that give views all around the lake. Griffy Lake's boathouse opens for the season on April 6. Griffy Lake also has a loop trail around the lake and fishing piers. Lake Monroe is Indiana's largest man-made lake and has Paynetown, Fairfax, Allen's Creek, Cutright, Moore's Creek, Salt Creek, Pine Grove and Crooked Creek state recreation areas. You can have a picnic, take a walk, rent a kayak or pontoon boat or fish from the bank or a pier. (Make sure you have an Indiana fishing license , please.)
