Maria Tuttocuore was already working in the travel industry when she decided to pursue a master's degree. She sensed that earning a degree in the field of travel and tourism would better position her for success by providing her with hands-on experience in the field and the opportunity to network. During her time at the Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, she completed two internships—one at Leading Hotels of the World and the other at the New York State Division of Tourism . She credits these two experiences with opening the doors to a job at the Monaco Government Tourist Office , where she was promoted to a senior executive sales & marketing position. Her experience in luxury travel and extensive knowledge in destination marketing and leisure trade led her into launching her own travel destination marketing and management company UNICA Journeys LLC based in New York City. Today she represents and consults a varied portfolio of international luxury travel companies.

NYU is a true city school, with no borders separating a distinct campus from the streets of the Big Apple. Students are guaranteed housing for all four years in the many residence halls throughout Manhattan, but many upperclassmen choose to live off campus in apartments around the city. Purdue University's West Lafayette, Indiana, campus is the main campus in the Purdue University system, which encompasses four other campuses throughout the state. About 20% of students are affiliated with Greek life, and Purdue offers a wide range of activities and organizations. Performance groups include the "All American" Marching Band, six jazz bands and two symphony orchestras. Ready to be an Aggie? All students assume the nickname at Texas A&M, an academic and athletic powerhouse in central Texas. Once an all men’s school called the Agricultural and Mechanical College – now shortened to A&M – the university today is coed and offers a wide variety of majors and activities. Students must earn a “C-“or better in all HTM courses, except HTM 20200, which must be taken Pass / No Pass.

Pass/No Pass Policy

  • A student may elect the Pass / Not-Pass option for elective courses only, unless an academic unit requires that a specific departmental course/s be taken Pass / Not-Pass.  Students may elect to take University Core Curriculum courses Pass / Not-Pass; however, some major Plans of Study require courses that also fulfill UCC foundational outcomes.  In such cases, students may not elect the Pass / Not-Pass option.  A maximum of 24 credits of elective courses under the Pass / Not-pass grading option can be used toward graduation requirements. For further information, students should refer to the College of Health and Human Sciences Pass / Not-Pass Policy.

Civics Literacy Proficiency Requirement

The civics literacy proficiency activities are designed to develop civic knowledge of purdue students in an effort to graduate a more informed citizenry. for more information visit the civics literacy proficiency  website..

Students will complete the Proficiency by passing a test of civic knowledge, and completing one of three paths:

  • Attending six approved civics-related events and completing an assessment for each; or
  • Completing 12 podcasts created by the Purdue Center for C-SPAN Scholarship and Engagement that use C-SPAN material and completing an assessment for each; or
  • Earning a passing grade for one of  these approved courses (or transferring in approved AP or departmental credit in lieu of taking a course).

Upper Level Requirement

  • Resident study at Purdue University for at least two semesters and the enrollment in and completion of at least 32 semester hours of coursework required and approved for the completion of the degree. These courses are expected to be at least junior-level (30000+) courses.
  • Students should be able to fulfill most , if not all , of these credits within their major requirements; there should be a clear pathway for students to complete any credits not completed within their major.

Do i need a hospitality management degree.

You don’t need a degree for entry-level work in the hospitality industry – some professionals start with a high school diploma and gain managerial and administrative experience on-the-job. Plus, there are many high schools that offer hospitality job training assistance.

Nevertheless, a university degree will go a long way to improving your career opportunities. Most full-service hotel chains now prefer job candidates for supervisory positions to hold a bachelor’s degree. To become a corporate director or manager of a 5-star establishment, you’ll probably have to aim even higher (e.g. an MBA in hospitality management).

Associate’s Degree in Hospitality Management

An associate’s degree in hospitality management is a 2-year undergraduate program that explores the fundamental issues of the hospitality industry. Programs are offered at community colleges, universities and technical institutes.

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Hospitality Management: Often earned by students who wish to go straight into the workforce.

Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management

A bachelor’s degree in hospitality management is a 4-year undergraduate program that trains students in every aspect of the hospitality industry. Because of this, most full-service hotel chains prefer managerial candidates to hold a bachelor’s degree in hospitality/hospitality management.

  • Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Hospitality Management: Typically built on a set of core business courses (e.g. accounting, economics, management, marketing, etc.).
  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Hospitality Management: I ncludes more math and science courses than a BA – useful for those interested in analytics and data science.
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Hospitality Management: Includes more liberal arts courses than a BS (e.g. English, history, etc.)

We should point out that these are general guidelines. Many universities don’t make drastic distinctions between the BS, BA or the BBA, so check each program’s curriculum to see if it suits your interests.

A bachelor’s degree in hospitality management follows a similar path to a general business degree. The curriculum mixes liberal arts courses with classes in public relations, accounting, administration, IT, marketing and personnel management. The main difference is that these classes concentrate on issues specifically related to the hospitality industry.

For example, students may explore the “ins and outs” of food service management and catering, hotel operations and hospitality law. They may be trained to handle software used in reservations, billing and housekeeping management. What’s more, they can often choose an elective such as club management, special event management or gaming & social policy.

Almost all bachelor’s programs include an advanced internship/externship to give undergraduates practical experience in hotels, resorts or hospitality settings.

Master’s Degree in Hospitality Management

A master’s degree in hospitality management is a 1-2 year graduate program that prepares students for executive management positions, entrepreneurial ventures, advancement up the career ladder or a PhD. College graduates with a bachelor’s degree in a subject other than hospitality sometimes earn a master’s degree as a way to get into the industry.

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Hospitality Management: Professional degree with a focus on core business courses and vocational training.
  • Master of Management in Hospitality (MMH): Professional degree with a focus on hospitality management training.
  • Master of Professional Studies (MPS) in Hospitality Management: Professional degree with a focus on hospitality management training.
  • Master of Science (MS) in Hospitality Management: Academic degree with a hospitality management curriculum. Some students use the MS as preparation for a PhD.

Unless you wish to teach at the university-level, your master’s qualification will be considered a terminal degree (i.e. the highest qualification you’ll need).

A master’s program in hospitality management builds on the foundation laid down in the undergraduate degree.

As well as business classes like HR, accounting and customer service, the curriculum may also tackle the finer points of corporate structure, hospitality marketing/branding and large-scale administration. Some schools allow students to elect a concentration (e.g. brand management, development & asset management, global & regional standards, etc.).

To give graduates real-world experience, universities incorporate a lot of on-site training into the degree program. Students take part in internships, collaborate on group projects and conduct their own research. The degree usually finishes with a capstone project or thesis.

Graduates with a good master’s degree are prepared to handle higher-level management challenges. When they’re not starting their own hospitality businesses, they work as:

Doctoral Degree in Hospitality Management

A PhD in Hospitality Management is a 4-7 year graduate program intended for hospitality professionals who wish to become university professors or conduct high-level hospitality research (e.g. new product development, management information systems, marketing and consumer behavior, etc.). Candidates are expected to write a doctoral dissertation.

A PhD is not necessary to qualify for top-level management jobs. Most hospitality professionals find that an MBA has much more practical application.

Certificate in Hospitality Management

A certificate in hospitality management is a non-degree program that takes anywhere from a few months to 1 year to complete. In addition to universities and community colleges, there are many technical institutes and vocational/trade schools that offer hospitality courses and certificates.

Certificate Options

  • Undergraduate Certificate: A popular and less expensive alternative to the AAS degree.
  • Graduate Certificate: A frequent choice for those have received a bachelor’s degree in another subject and/or who have prior experience in the field.

Certificates tend to be focused on specific areas/skills. For example, a general hospitality management certificate might cover basic management and administration, front office procedures, labor issues, budgeting/financial fundamentals, branding/marketing and event planning. But there are also certificates that concentrate only on one area (e.g. food & beverage).

Although a certificate doesn’t carry the same weight as a degree, it can be a useful addition to your résumé. Some people may earn a certificate in order to improve their chances when applying for management positions. Others might use it as an entry into an assistantship position under a department manager.

Important Accreditations

Regional accreditation.

We recommend your college or university has  regional accreditation. This is a “seal of approval” granted to institutions (e.g. non-profit and public colleges and universities) by one of six regional accrediting bodies (e.g. North Central Association of Colleges and Schools).

Benefits of Regional Accreditation

Although nationally accredited schools are generally cheaper, there are a few reasons why we offer this advice. Attending a regionally accredited school will make it easier for you to:

  • Transfer credits (many regionally accredited colleges and universities  will not accept credits from nationally accredited schools)
  • Apply for student loans, tuition reimbursement, scholarships and federal financial aid
  • Get into graduate school
  • Attract the attention of headhunters and recruiters

Regional accreditation only applies to a college or university, not the program itself.

The Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration (ACPHA) accredits ~60 hospitality management programs throughout the world.

To qualify for ACPHA accreditation, schools must demonstrate that their hospitality programs:

  • Cover important hospitality subjects such as operations, accounting, financial management, marketing, law, ethics, organization theory and administrative processes
  • Include meaningful hands-on experiences that teach appropriate job skills
  • Have excellent teaching staff, student services (e.g. career counseling, industry exposure) and facilities

You don’t need to attend an ACPHA institution to qualify for federal financial aid. However, it is a useful marker of quality. It may also give you a leg up in professional certifications and job applications.

Voluntary Certification

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) is one of the most well-known organizations in the hospitality industry, and it offers a variety of voluntary certifications for hospitality professionals . To become certified, candidates must meet knowledge and experience requirements and pass the certification exam.

Common acronyms include:

  • Certified Hospitality & Tourism Management Professional (CHTMP) : Available to high school students who complete the 2-year Hospitality and Tourism Management Program (HTMP) .
  • Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA) : Targeted towards hotel general manager and hospitality executives.
  • Specialty Certifications for hospitality instructors, data analysts, spa supervisors, etc.

On Your Schedule

Students have the option to earn their master's degree in hospitality and tourism management on campus or via distance learning and at their own pace. Synchronous distance delivery using Adobe Connect provides remote students with an engaging, interactive classroom experience where they learn in real time with on-campus classmates and professors. Additional asynchronous course options give students the flexibility to complete courses online and at their convenience. 

Customized Curriculum

The degree program includes 30 credit hours of innovative classes covering specialized topics in business analytics, strategic leadership, marketing and social media, customer experience management, talent management and finance. Elective courses and field projects allow students to tailor their degree to their interests, including international learning opportunities. Thesis (research) and non-thesis (professional) tracks are available to match students’ career objectives.

Three ways to get started.

  • For current bachelor’s degree students, the accelerated bachelor’s to master’s program allows you to start taking graduate classes as part of your undergraduate coursework. This option is perfect for any student who wants to graduate with two degrees in less time.
  • Working professionals and alumni who aren’t ready to commit to earning their master’s can take a “test drive” of up to two classes as a non-degree seeking student. Those classes will count towards a master’s degree if the student later decides to join the program. Prospective students interested in this option can fill out our interest form or visit the graduate school’s non-degree seeking student application .
  • And for students who have their undergraduate degree and are ready to earn their master’s, we accept new students throughout the year and can create a course plan that matches your career goals and schedule. More information on how to apply to the MIHTM program is below.

Admission Requirements

All applicants for the MIHTM program must apply through the  Graduate School . For more detailed information about the specific degree requirements, please visit the academic bulletin . Prospective students should complete the main application form and pay the $50 application fee online. In addition, applicants must send all supporting material directly to the Graduate School. 

The following supporting material is required with the application:

  • A current resume.
  • A one- to two-page statement of career objectives that states how the MIHTM curriculum will help the applicant achieve their career objectives.
  • At least two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a current or former professor who can comment on the applicant’s ability to succeed in graduate studies. Applicants will send out requests for letters of recommendation from within the ApplyWeb application. The Graduate School does not accept recommendations sent directly from applicants.
  • One official transcript from each college or university attended (undergraduate and, if applicable, graduate). Successful applicants generally have a GPA of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale).  
  • Official Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores. Successful applicants generally score at least 500 (verbal and quantitative combined) on the GMAT or at least 300 on the GRE.  GMAT/GRE scores more than five years old will not be accepted under any circumstances. The codes for submitting scores are JV2 (GMAT) and 5818 (GRE).
  • Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. International applicants who have received a degree from a college or university in the United States are not required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS. Test scores are valid for two years only.

Other popular disciplines include health services (11%), biology (10%), engineering (6%), and communication and journalism (6%).  The South Carolina Honors College is extremely hard to get into and is one of the finest in the entire country.

Professional Outcomes: 79% of recent grads landed at their next destination within six months with an average starting salary of over $55,000. Within the School of Business, 87% of 2023 grads were employed within three months and the average starting salary was $69k. Top employers of recent classes included KPMG, IBM, Aramark, Bank of America, Vanguard, PwC, and Marriot. The majority of those continuing their studies in a graduate/professional degree program did so at the University of South Carolina; other popular landing spots are Duke and Wake Forest.

Nursing is popular, with 11% of degrees conferred being in the health professions. Other frequently pursued majors include the social sciences (10%), biology (7%), and education (5%). 62% of courses enroll fewer than 30 students. The university also has the oldest study abroad program in the nation, with 30% of undergrads participating.

Professional Outcomes: 94% of Class of 2022 grads quickly found their next destination. 66% were employed, with 74% taking jobs at for-profit companies, 16% at nonprofits, 7% in K-12 education, and 4% with a government entity. The greatest number of newly minted alums were hired by JPMorgan Chase & Co., KPMG, EY, ChristianaCare, and Deloitte. The median starting salary for this cohort was $62,000. 28% immediately pursued an advanced degree, with 62% entering master’s programs, 20% entering a professional program, and 9% beginning a PhD.

Professional Outcomes: Those who graduated in 2024 had largely positive outcomes, with 62% employed, 12% pursuing a volunteer activity, 6% taking additional coursework, and 2% joining the military. Across all majors over the past five years, the most alumni have go on to work in the following sectors: operations, education, healthcare services, sales, administrative, business development, and community and social services. Top employers include Florida International University, Baptist Health, Miami-Dade Public Schools, Amazon, and Apple.

Next in popularity are business/marketing (15%), communication/journalism (9%), and the social sciences (8%).

Professional Outcomes: Within six months of graduating, 75% of 2022 grads had obtained full-time employment, 22% were continuing their education, and 4% were still figuring out their next step. More than 25 recent grads were hired by each of KPMG and Deloitte. Dukes found employment at 1,610 organizations around the world and the average starting salary was $57,615. Among the almost one-quarter of recent grads who matriculated directly into a graduate school program, the most popular location was JMU itself.

Also popular were engineering (10%), the social sciences (10%), biology (9%), and psychology (8%).

Professional Outcomes:  Graduates of WSU tend to concentrate in Seattle, Portland, Spokane, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The greatest number of alumni are presently employed by Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon, SEL, Starbucks, Amazon Web Services, T-Mobile, Google, Nike, Meta, and CBRE. Many students who enroll immediately in an advanced degree program do so at Washington State itself. They offer 140 graduate programs and certificates.

While a polytechnic institute, the most commonly conferred degree in 2022 was actually business (29%). Next up are engineering (18%), the social sciences (9%), science technologies (6%), and agriculture (4%).

Professional Outcomes:  An excellent 91% of the Class of 2023 had already achieved positive outcomes within six months of leaving campus. The employers locking down the largest number of recent Cal Poly Pomona grads were Accenture, Bain & Company, Boston Consulting Group, Bloomberg, DraftKings, Meta, Morgan Stanley, NIH, Nike, PwC, and Tesla Motors. The graduate destinations of Class of 2023 members included Harvard, Brown, Duke, Stanford, Oxford, Yale, USC, UPenn, and Georgia Tech.

One recent class sent large numbers to major corporations that included Deloitte (67), KPMG (44), Lockheed Martin (39), Capital One (30), EY (28), Booz Allen Hamilton (18), and Northrop Grumman (12). Professional Outcomes: Upon receiving their diplomas, 56% of Class of 2022 graduates were entering the world of employment while 17% were already accepted into graduate or professional school.  Hordes of Buckeyes can be found at many of the nation’s leading companies. More than 2,000 alumni work for JPMorgan Chase, more than 1,000 are employed by Amazon, and more than 600 work for Google and Microsoft. Professional Outcomes: Graduates of the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences are employed in fairly large numbers by the likes of John Deere, Principal Financial Group, and Amazon. Overall, the most alumni work for Wells Fargo, Bayer, Corteva Agriscience, Collins Aerospace, Cargill, and Microsoft. Most remain in Iowa after graduation but many also move to Minnesota, Chicago, California, or Texas. The average starting salary for an engineering grad was $74,716 in 2023.

Hundreds of Owl alumni can be found at big-time companies such as Merck, Comcast, Vanguard, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan Chase, and Bristol Myers Squib. Within six months of graduating, 91% of Fox School of Business 2021 graduates were employed or had started their own businesses. The median salary for all graduates of that school was $57,000.
