October weather is terrific in Costa Rica — despite what you might have heard!

Yes, October is the rainiest month of the year on the Pacific coast. But on the gorgeous Caribbean coast — home to some of the best beaches in Costa Rica — October is one of the driest, sunniest months of the year.

Visit Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast in October and you’ll enjoy beautiful weather and limited crowds. This is one of the best months to visit terrific destinations like Tortuguero National Park and Puerto Viejo . And because seas are often calm in October, it’s a great time to snorkel in Cahuita National Park or scuba dive offshore Punta Uva .

On Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast, however, it’s a completely different story. October means the depths of the rainy season . That said, the amount of rain varies significantly by location. In the South Pacific — one of the wettest regions in Costa Rica — many hotels and businesses shut down for all of September and October. In the North Pacific — the driest region in Costa Rica — you’ll still encounter plenty of rain in October. But northern beach towns like Tamarindo and Playa Flamingo experience much less rain than locations further south.

As for Costa Rica’s Mountains: avoid them in October! Constant rain and chilly temperatures are no way to spend a vacation.

October Holidays and Festivals in Costa Rica

Carnavales de límon.

For years the biggest celebration on the Caribbean coast was Carnavales de Límon, a vibrant parade in the port town of Limon . Heavily influenced by Afro-Caribbean culture, the parade normally fell on the weekend closest to October 12. In 2015 Carnavales de Límon was cancelled due to lack of funding and organization. Sadly, the tradition appears to have ended.

Over the past few decades, Halloween has become increasing popular in Costa Rica, especially among young people. The excuse to dress up in costumes and party is just too tempting to resist, although Trick or Treating has not yet caught on. Some Costa Ricans bemoan yet another cultural invasion from the US, so they’ve tried to co-opt Halloween with a new holiday: Dia de la Mascarada .

Dia de la Mascarada

Costa Rica’s Día de la Mascarada (“Day of the Masquerade”) is held on October 31. First established in 1996, it was partly a celebration of traditional Costa Rican mascaradas — and partly a way to counter the growing influence of Halloween. The largest Día de la Mascarada celebration is held in Cartago.

Mascaradas feature a troupe of dancers wearing giant paper-mache heads depicting devils, animals, celebrities and La Giganta (“The Giant Woman”). As dancers twirl around and interact with children, a band called a cimarrona plays percussion and brass instruments. Cimarrona means “wild,” which accurately describes the loud, boisterous music.

The typical rainfall patterns are inverted this month some of the top itineraries to the Pacific resort areas get washed out.  It’s the perfect time of year to get a bit off the beaten path and head to the east coast.

October Weather in Costa Rica

October is the rainiest month on the Pacific but driest on the Caribbean ( other surprising secrets of October ).

Days and even weeks of rain can be generated on the west coast and over the central mountains by the westerly winds called temporales del Pacífico . Many lodges and tours on the Osa and southern coast shut down operations.

Even the traditionally dry Guanacaste region has some rain most days and the unimproved roads of the Nicoya peninsula become impassable when the rivers rise and flood the fords.

On the other hand the Caribbean is basking in the driest and sunniest weather of the year.  The mountains scrape the moisture out of the Pacific air and by the time it reaches the coast it’s just a warm wind.

Temperatures across the country are about as low as they ever get which means averages around 80 °F (27 °C) with lows overnight about 68 to 76 °F (20-24 °C).

Up in elevation by San José temperatures average 75 to 85 °F (24-29 °C) during the day.  If you go even higher by Irazú Volcano or the cloud forests of the  San Gerardos it even gets “cold” (52-66 °F and 11-19 °C).

The rainy season came in with a vengeance in back in October of 2017 as the low pressure system from tropical storm Nate in the Caribbean pulled warm moist air from the Pacific across the central mountains producing record rainfall, flooding and damage on the western side and Costa Rica’s costliest natural disaster ever.  It continued wetter than normal well into January 2018.

Planning Ahead & Reservations

In general “green season” ( rainy season ) travel is gaining popularity in Costa Rica, but on the Pacific side and in the mountains it’s unlikely any except the most popular hotels will be fully booked.

If you want the flexibility of traveling without a fixed itinerary or reservations October can be a good choice as long as you don’t want to go to the Osa. If you choose to travel to the southwest check to make sure that the hotels and lodges you’re interested in are actually open and accessible.

The drier weather in the southern Caribbean this time of year makes it a relatively undiscovered rainy season bargain but word is getting out quickly and if you have your heart set on a particular hotel you should probably have reservations.

2022 is likely to be a wild ride in October with equal odds of  La Niña which normally brings even wetter weather to the Pacific side or La Nada which increases unpredictability.

The 2022 tropical storm and hurricane season is projected to be much more active than normal and while they rarely make landfall on Costa Rica’s shores they can have a huge impact on rainfall. Surprisingly although hurricanes are a Caribbean phenomenon they often have their main impact on the western side of Costa Rica.  The low pressures draw warm moist air off the Pacific and across the country causing torrential rains, flooding and mudslides.

Carnavales de Limón was cancelled for several years due to lack of funding.  In 2017 it was revived in January, cancelled in May, resurrected in July and then postponed due to Tropical storm Nate.   It came back briefly in 2019 but of course was eliminated by the Covid pandemic.  There are no plans for 2022 .

Similar to September , October can be one of the wettest or most rewarding months to visit Costa Rica , depending on where you are visiting.  By October, you will practically need scuba gear to breathe along the South Pacific coast!  However, the Caribbean side is taking in the sun as they enjoy one of their best months of the year.

October is an odd month for  weather in Costa Rica  with the Pacific side receiving the heaviest rains of the year and the Caribbean side enjoying the best weather of the year.  The Temporales del Pacifico continue to plague the South Pacific coastal region with heavy rains that can last all day. But the people of the southern Caribbean coastal region (less than 100 miles to the east) are enjoying their sunny dry weather!

The Pacific Northwest is the driest area on the Pacific coast.  Temperatures here are the lowest of the year, averaging in the mid 80s during the day.  The rains are usually limited to the late afternoons, but can occur at any time. 

The Central Pacific receives a lot of rain in October.  Heavy rains are present most afternoons and can even last all day at times.  Day time temperatures are usually in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

The South Pacific is the wettest place in Costa Rica in October.  Most lodges are closed for the month.  Daytime highs will be in the mid 80s. Rains can last for days at a time.

The Caribbean side of Costa Rica experiences the best weather of the year in October.  Day time highs will be in the 90s and skies will be mostly sunny. Evening showers are possible, but not the norm.

The Central Valley  and Arenal  experience weather patterns similar to the Central Pacific in October.  Rains can be heavy and daytime temps are usually in the low 70s.

Reservations 

October is the heart of the green season on the Pacific side and therefore easier to get a good room at a good price than in other seasons.  The majority of quality Caribbean side accommodations are booked solid months in advance due to the great weather.  Despite the weather on the Pacific side, the best hotels and those that offer great Early Booking Deals can be at or near full occupancy.

October 8 – Founding Day- celebration in San Isidro de El General of the founding of the town with music, dancing, food, bull fighting (w/o bloodshed) and sporting events. 

October 10- Carnival- similar to “Rio” in the streets of Limon- celebrates Columus arrival-culminates on the 12th (Columbus Day). 

October 12- Dia de la Raza- Columbus Day – caps off several days of Carnival in the Caribbean Coast. 

October 24- Fiesta Pattronale-Escazu - street fair with music, dancing, food and bull fighting (no bloodshed). 

October 31- Halloween – This traditionally American holiday is quickly catching on with Costa Rican children as they dress in costume and trick or treat.

Costa Rica in October: A Good Time To Visit?

Summer 2020, Corona hit and our planned world trip first changed into a road trip through Europe . But as of September, the world started to open up again in some places. Researching our options for a trip abroad in fall, we came up with the idea to visit Costa Rica in October .

Iff you are a familiar with Central America's geography and climate in general, you probably know that Costa Rica in October means rain. And I'm not talking about gentle drops. It's cats and dogs!

October is Costa Rica's wettest month. Every guide will tell you that October in Costa Rica brings several hours of rain per day.

So why would you want to go there during that unpleasant month? You'll be surprised !

Costa Rica's climate

Two seasons: winter and summer.

Rainy season in Costa Rica, also called the ' Green season ', lasts from May to November with October being the absolute wettest month.

It's one of actually only two seasons in Costa Rica: summer and winter , dry and rainy season. 

And when it's winter in Europe, summer in Costa Rica starts. And vice versa. 

Several microclimates

And if this weren't confusing enough, Costa Rica also has several microclimates . This means that the climate completely changes from one parte of the country to the next.

You can experience pouring rain in central Costa Rica in October while being spoiled with the brightest sunshine on the Caribbean side at the same time.

This is partly due to the mountains crossing Costa Rica from the North West to the South East, causing a huge difference in yearly rainfall.

South and North of the country differ too, rainy season starting later in the South part and being generally wetter than in the North but ending at the same time.

The Caribbean coast has rain throughout the year and can't be divided in a proper dry and rainy season but February/March and September/October are the sunniest months.

Costa Rica in October: prepare to get wet

I'll stop the meteorology here cause you don't really care about the scientific details, do you? But just remember: October is generally the wettest month for the whole of Costa Rica. 

There. I said it.

Then why bother visiting Costa Rica in October anyway?

Costa rica wasn't in our initial plans....

Ha! We're almost coming to the reasons why you should still visit Costa Rica in October. But not quite.

Like I said earlier, we didn't have that much of a choice. This is how it went:

After having spent time in quarantine in Austria in April, we embarked on a trip through Europe in June. Starting with a lovely Austrian road trip (Austria being Sebi's home ), we crossed Slovenia to travel several weeks in Croatia . 

We managed to get all the way to Crete ( best beaches in Crete anyone?) and got to enjoy the famous Santorini sunset after having marvelled at the Meteora monasteries . 

Then we had to get back to Austria to attend two different weddings - which we enjoyed very much.

Lockdowns lurking in Europe

September was the month people came back from holidays and schools started again. And while we made absolutely sure to not have any close contact with anyone during our two months-trip because my Ulcerative Colitis treatments make me vulnerable, others did not.

Cases were rising globally but especially in Europe. And there were talks about anew lockdowns.

Having lost several months of our initial world-trip-plan already (not to mention several thousands of Euros in flights that got cancelled), we were eager to at least get out of Europe.

We were even willing to go into quarantine upon arrival.

Our options

From our original plan, these were the options we had at that point:

• Africa : We had planned trips through Tanzania, Sambia, Rwanda and South Africa. After having been to Namibia , I was longing to get back to the African continent. While Tanzania was indeed reopening, its neighbours were not. And South Africa was out of the question. So this was a no.
• Asia : Bali had initially announced to reopen in September but decided last minute that the borders would remain closed until 2021. The only country open to tourists was Cambodia. But none of the neighbours either. So, no.  
• Latin America : This sounded far more promising. While our plan was to visit Peru and Bolivia at first, Central America was also in our mind as we were supposed to head to Belize . And this is where it started to look far more promising. Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Belize - they were all opening to tourists in October! 

So we embarked on an epic four-weeks- adventure in Costa Rica !

Next issue: getting into the country

Obviously, travelling in strange times like a global pandemic required a bit of preparation. And because we decided on visiting Costa Rica in October in ... well, September, it was quite hectic to get all the paperwork done.

Basically, this is what we needed at that point (September 2020) coming straight from Europe*:

• An insurance covering Covid19 -related medical and lodging expenses  
• A negative Covid19-test 
• A filled out health pass with insurance number and test-result generating a QR-code they checked before boarding
• All the documents above and the address of our first accommodation in Costa Rica

*UPDATE 2021: vaccinated people don't need a negative test, nor insurance.

The pros and cons of visiting Costa Rica in October

Let's start with the cons cause - duh! - most of the travel guides will advise against heading to beautiful Costa Rica in rainy season and ESPECIALLY in October cause the weather is just too bad.

• Stating the obvious: it rains - nay! - pours every day
• Some parts of Costa Rica might not be easily accessible in October
• The road conditions can be muddy - you'll definitely need a 4x4 for some areas
• Lots of restaurants and hotels are closed as they don't expect much tourists in that season
• Forget beautiful sunsets, the rain generally starts in the afternoon and lasts until the middle of the night
• The Costa Rican weather in October is unpredictable: it can be hot and sunny one second and then a huge thunderstorm surprises you the next

Not even the worst road we had

• NO MASS TOURISM! Heck! Hardly any tourists at all 
• Amazing green colours you won't get to see any other time of the year - hence the 'Green season'
• Cheaper accommodation prices
• Cheaper tours and guides, better deals for rental cars
• Certain wildlife like turtles, whales and dolphins are way more active around Costa Rica in October
• More rain = more water in the rivers = better for rafting and tubing
• Cooler temperatures (summer in Costa Rica can get extremely hot)
• Cooler temperatures doesn't mean 'cold': it's still hot enough to easily dry after water activities
• Again: more rain = more water in the rivers = more spectacular waterfalls

The first one is obviously one of the biggest advantages: no mass tourism !

We visited tourist-hotspots such as the Monteverde Cloud Forest , the volcano Arenal and the ' Catarata Río Fortuna ' and we were basically alone.

The cloud forest was magical! We were literally the only human visitors in that giant lush green rainforest and the mist from the clouds added some kind of drama.

This is actually how I imagined the ' Bosque Nuboso ' (= literally 'cloudy forest') to be!

We had the whole morning without any rain and even a little bit of sun for the first part of the hike.

As of noon, it started to rain but this was just so charming and we hardly got wet thanks to the giant trees and leaves everywhere.

No tourists also meant no queue at the different viewpoints and no people jams in the narrow areas.

Granted, in the evening it started to pour but back at our cosy hotel in Santa Elena, the Greemount Hotel * (isn't it cute?), we had the best sleep cause rain-sounds are just so soothing.

Plus: we only paid 25 € / 30 US$  a night, yummy breakfast included!

Parque Nacional Volcán Arenal

A few days later, we hiked through the National Park of the Arenal Volcano.

In order to do this, we stayed at the Arenal Xilópalo * in La Fortuna, which cost about 18 €  /  22 US$ per night for a huge room with two double beds, lush green jungle around us and an incredible full-frontal view on the volcano from the lovely restaurant terrace.

The park on itself was pretty much empty again: no other tourists in places where you would normally have to wait a bit to get a good view on the volcano.

Catarata Río Fortuna

We also went to see the ' Catarata Río Fortuna ' which is a super impressive waterfall that plunges down in a straight line of 75 m. It was magnificent to watch!

And like I said, cooler temperatures don't mean that you freeze: we had some nice swimming time underneath (well not directly underneath) the fall and in the river.

Yes, we dried up pretty quickly while climbing back up the stairs to the entrance as it was a nice 27° Celsius (about 60° F ).

Here again, you can see that visiting Costa Rica in October isn't half bad: no people, big waterfall (it's usually a lot smaller during dry season) and still warm enough to have plenty of swimming-pleasure.

Tortuguero NP: Mama-turtles and babies hatching

We went to the National Park Tortuguero where we had the insane opportunity of watching mama-turtles laying eggs at night.

The big turtles are the most active from May to November with nesting and stuff. Only, when you come during European summer holiday season, you will have to book a turtle-observation tour quite early and you will most certainly not be alone.

Here again: visiting Costa Rica during their wettest month, i.e. October, is perfect for turtle-adventures.

Sure, that's still no guarantee to see anything spectacular but the chances are definitely higher during rainy season.

This was the next National Park we visited that has supposedly one of the most beautiful beaches in the world: Manuel Antonio beach.

I can't stretch this enough: we were alone .

Do you really need another reason to visit Costa Rica in October? Well, here you go:

October is actually one of the driest months for Costa Rica's insanely beautiful Caribbean coast . That's why I talked about microclimates at the beginning.

Add to this that, here again, there are a lot less people travelling during that month, that's just the perfect combination, right?

And look at the blue of that water! We've only seen more beautiful shades of turquoise in Caye Caulker (Belize) or Bora Bora in French Polynesia .

In conclusion

YES, YES, AND A BIG YES to travelling to Costa Rica in October!

I must admit, we were a little bit sceptic as this really wasn't planned and we feared the rain would mess everything up.

But knowing what we know now and having experienced everything first-hand, we would probably pick the exact same period to come back to Costa Rica anytime!

At least for the parts of the country we've seen. Our limited time in that incredible country wasn't enough so we will most certainly come back to check out other areas, maybe even in different seasons.

But October was a great idea and choosing Costa Rica an even better one!

In most of the country, October is the wettest month of the year. Everywhere from San Jose westward is likely to spend the majority of this month under warm rainstorms. However, on the other side of the country in the Caribbean, the typical weather pattern generally results in dry, sunny days throughout most of October.

Due to this inverse of weather patterns, travel to Costa Rica in October can be a little more complicated to work out; some eco-lodges on the Pacific will actually close for the month due to high rains, while Caribbean accommodations are often booked up months in advance. What the Weather is like in Costa Rica in October

In October, Costa Rica’s weather patterns tend to flip. A mountain chain runs down most of the central part of Costa Rica creating two vast slopes (the Pacific watershed and the Caribbean watershed), which define the weather on each side of the country. On the Pacific side (pretty much everything from the capital of San Jose and westward) in October, they are in the heart of the rainy season. It is not uncommon for it to rain every day as precipitation levels are at their highest. Conversely, the Caribbean side gets a reprieve from the rain in October and tends to be sunnier and dryer. In fact, the weather on the Caribbean side of the country (San Jose and eastward) tends to be so nice in October that high season pricing and availability is in effect.

Holiday, festivals & places to visit in costa rica in october, carnival / carnaval (early october).

This annual week-long festival is held in the Caribbean city of Puerto Limon , near Puerto Viejo and Cahuita. It leads up to Day of the Cultures and is meant to celebrate all things Afro-Caribbean in Costa Rica. Parades with floats and dancing women move through town and food vendors bring out all of Limon’s best dishes such as rice and beans (coconut battered rice and beans), escabeche de pescado (marinated fish), pan bon (sweet bread), and ale (lemon fruit drink with ginger and sugar cane). Unfortunately, in recent years, municipal budget limitations have kept Limon from celebrating the carnival. If you do happen to visit during Carnival, make sure you have reservations far in advance for the surrounding area as many tourists, national and international, make their way to the coast for this event.

Columbus Day or Day of the Cultures / Dia de la Raza o Día de las Culturas (October 12)

As with most of the Americas, Costa Rica recognizes the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas on October 12. Formerly called Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race) by Spain, Costa Rica has recently changed the name of this holiday to Day of the Cultures in a nod to the many cultures that make up Costa Rica now and that made it up when Christopher Columbus first arrived in 1502. Though not an official Costa Rican holiday, most schools and many businesses close for the day.

Halloween (October 31)

As recently as a decade ago, Halloween was still viewed as a devious celebration by the majority of Costa Ricans, but enough children have eagerly adopted this evening of candy, scary clothes and running loose in neighborhoods, that their parents have slowly begun to relent. These days it’s quite possible to see children celebrating a Halloween-themed activity in their schools or, to a lesser degree, trick-or-treating at night. It is obviously much more common in areas where there are large expat communities.

What to Pack for an October Trip

Don’t even step foot into Costa Rica without a compact, travel-friendly umbrella. Maybe if you bring it, you won’t need it; but if you don’t bring it, you’ll wish you had! Quick-dry clothing and shoes that can get wet are also important to bring so that you don’t spend your days desperately seeking out a laundromat. Pros to Visiting Costa Rica in October

• The Caribbean side of the country sparkles under sunshine during October (most of the time)
• October can be a great time to rent a cabin in the rainforest, bring a book and listen to the bird song that proceeds rainstorms
• There are virtually no crowds

We have lived in Costa Rica for several years and have been through many Octobers in this country. We now know the best things to do, places to visit, and places to avoid. 

So get ready to discover the weather during October in Costa Rica, and find out the most captivating destinations to visit during this time.

Should You Visit Costa Rica in October?

Pros of visiting in october.

Although October is peak rainy season in Costa Rica , there are still some perks at visiting at this time of year .

• Fewer Tourists: With fewer crowds, you can enjoy the tranquility of serene beaches, national parks, and other attractions. Trust us, it is completely different than the high season. 
• Lush greenery: October is when the country is at its greenest, offering stunning views and opportunities for wildlife spotting. There is something to be said for experiencing a jungle country like Costa Rica when it is actually completely lush. 
• Charming rain showers: The rain showers are generally short and in the late afternoons, bringing a certain charm and freshness to the atmosphere.
• Ideal surfing conditions: October is a great time for surfing, with the Pacific Coast offering world-class waves.
• Lower costs: Travel and accommodation costs tend to be lower in this off-peak season, making it a more affordable choice for budget travelers.

Cons of Visiting in October

However, visiting Costa Rica in October also has its disadvantages:

• Limited Things to Do: When heavy rains hit, it’s possible that some outdoor activities may be unavailable or restricted. For instance, white water rafting might not be safe during this time of year.
• Business Closures: Just a heads up, some businesses, especially in beach areas, tend to close during the wet season because there are usually fewer tourists around..

Our Opinion

If you’re a nature enthusiast who doesn’t mind the occasional rain shower and is on a budget, visiting Costa Rica in October could be a fantastic choice. The landscapes are at their greenest, and you’ll have the chance to ride some incredible waves if you’re into surfing. 

However, it’s important to keep in mind that there might be disruptions to your plans due to rainfall, limited activities, and potential travel difficulties caused by road conditions. 

So, we suggest considering your comfort with humidity, possible travel disruptions, and the likelihood of some businesses being closed before making your decision.

For us, October is the month that I start to really crave cold weather. It’s as if this change of seasons is in my blood from growing up in New England. I crave apple pies, pumpkins, hayrides, and foliage haha.

We always make a trip to San Gerardo de Dota in October because it is cold and rainy and only 1.5 hours from San Jose. After about 4 days there I feel like I’ve gotten my fix of cold weather and can return to warm weather life.

Northern Mountains

• Caribbean Coast: It most likely won’t be completely dry, but the Caribbean will be a bit more dry than the Pacific Coast. 
• Ostional: This is usually peak turtle nesting season. Ostional is difficult to get to at this time of year because the trip involves some river crossings (which can be flooded), but keep up with the turtle nesting schedule and visit if possible. 
• Pavones : If you are interested in surfing, the swells at Pavones are usually at their biggest around this time of year. 
• Manuel Antonio National Park: Despite occasional rain showers in October, the park’s beaches and hiking trails are less crowded, providing a more peaceful experience.

Places to Avoid in October

• Corcovado National Park: The park entrance at Sirene is closed in October
• Monteverde: If you don’t want heavy constant rain, it’s best to avoid Monteverde. 

Fun Things to Do in Costa Rica in October

• Experience the Limón Carnival: October is an incredible time to experience the vibrant culture of Costa Rica at the Limón Carnival. Celebrated in the city of Limón on the Caribbean coast, this week-long extravaganza hosts parades, live music, and street food, all culminating on Columbus Day (October 12th).
• Go Bird Watching in Quetzales National Park: The park is home to a variety of bird species, including the resplendent Quetzal, one of the most beautiful birds in the world. October is an excellent time for bird watching here, as the lush green scenery provides a stunning backdrop.

• Check out a Museum: If you are in San Jose, there are plenty of indoor activities to do such as exploring one of the many museums. 

Booking Transportation in October

When you’re traveling in Costa Rica, we highly recommend renting a car. It’s the best way to have the flexibility to get around and explore. 

If you’re visiting in October, renting a 4×4 vehicle is a good idea, especially if you’ll be in Monteverde, Nosara area, or any other remote town with steep hills.

Why? Well, certain parts of the country have roads that may not be in the best condition, especially during the rainy season when dirt roads can become more challenging to navigate. Keep in mind that there are river crossings in some areas like Nosara, Purto Jimenez, and the back road between Mal Pais and Montezuma.

During the dry season, river crossings are usually not a problem as the water level is low. But in the rainy season, the water level can rise, and you may not be able to cross the rivers.

• Watch out for flash flooding. Unfortunately, it does happen and can definitely be scary. If you see a stream or river suddenly turn muddy, that’s a sign to get out ASAP. A flash flood is likely on its way.
• Also, keep in mind that things can get slippery after a rainstorm. Just so you know, in some places, there might not be the same level of safety measures you’re used to back home. It’s up to you to use your judgment. For instance, at waterfalls, there’s often no fencing around the base or top. In the past, people have gotten seriously hurt or even killed by getting too close to the edge and slipping. So, take care out there!

On average countrywide, the least expensive time to travel to Costa Rica is during the low season, especially during months that fall outside of the shoulder sub-season (July and August), including October . This is when accommodation prices and car rental rates are at their lowest (note that prices for tours / activities, shared and private transportation services, and food tend to remain the same year-round). As an off-season month for travel in general, international flights to/from Costa Rica tend to be fairly priced for visits during October.

With the exception of southern Caribbean destinations, Costa Rica’s least favorable weather is experienced during the low season, which spans October . During this time, most of the country experiences Costa Rica’s green / wet / rain season, which is considered Costa Rica’s winter season. Even though you’re most likely to encounter below-average periods of sunshine and above-average periods of rain if you visit during October, there’s still plenty of great weather to be had. If you want to increase the amount of sunshine you get and decrease the amount of rain you receive, consider vacationing at destinations along Costa Rica’s southern Caribbean coast (between Limon and Manzanillo). Opposite the weather pattern that the rest of Costa Rica follows, the southern Caribbean receives its best weather during the months of September and October.

With the exception of southern Caribbean destinations, cloud cover and sporadic rain is experienced in Costa Rica during the month of October. This weather can affect otherwise beautiful views captured during adventure and nature tours, atop volcano craters, and at several  miradors  (viewpoints) around the country.

October is part of Costa Rica’s green / wet / rain season, which means you’re most likely to witness the country lush and green (as opposed to dry and brown, in some areas) when you visit.

Costa Rica’s roads are typically at their worst during October and November following a long green / wet / rain season . Road closures due to landslides, river crossings, and bumpy roads dotted with potholes are commonly encountered during October travel in Costa Rica. Unpaved roads comprised of dirt and dust may become muddy and cut with ruts. Having a 4×4 vehicle is a good idea—if not a requirement , depending on which highways and roads you’ll be covering—if you plan to drive around Costa Rica in October.

Weather in Costa Rica in October

October is part of the green season or rainy season for most of Costa Rica, so prices will be lower for both hotels and airfare this time of year.

In fact, September and October are the perfect months to visit this region for the best prices and lightest crowds.

However, Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is experiencing its dry season in October, which makes it the perfect time to visit as most days will be sunny and warm.

The country’s Pacific coast and South Pacific regions will typically experience more rainy days than sunny days this time of year.

Average temperatures for Costa Rica in October hover around 75 to 85 degrees for most of the country. The higher elevation areas near the capital of San José tend to be a bit cooler.

At the end of the day, Costa Rica weather can also be unpredictable, so come prepared for both sunny and rainy days.

This Costa Rica October travel guide is intended to share the best things to do in Costa Rica during October. I’ll also share some Costa Rica travel tips to ensure your trip goes smoothly.

Listed down below are some of Costa Rica’s top attractions and things you won’t want to miss during your Costa Rica holiday.

One could easily spend a month here and not run out of things to see. I encourage you to consider a 7 to 10 day Costa Rica itinerary to ensure you have enough time to enjoy your visit.

The Monteverde Cloud Forest and southern Caribbean coast are two popular destinations I recommend not skipping.

1. See the sloths

Seeing sloths in the wild in Costa Rica is one of my favorite travel memories ever. I think they are just too cute for words and I believe you’ll be just as excited as I was. 

Sloths are found in large numbers on the Caribbean side of the country, so you’ll have an excellent chance of seeing them during your visit.

Both Tortuguero and Puerto Viejo are especially good locations for spotting sloths. 

Sloths are solitary creatures so you will usually find them alone as they prefer to have their own tree.

Once you spot one, they are easy to observe since they don’t move very fast. You’ll usually find them munching on tree leaves or climbing around, albeit very slowly. 

People love to share when they spot one, so do the same for others if you see one first.

Sloth spotting seems to be a favorite activity among just about everybody in Costa Rica. Who can blame them? 

If you’re having trouble finding them on your own, head over to the Sloth Sanctuary near Limon.

The sanctuary is a rehabilitation and education center for sloths. The funds from admission go to support the important work they do for the animals. 

2. Explore the beaches

One of the things that surprised me most about Costa Rica during my visit was how beautiful the beaches were.

Since you’ll be visiting Costa Rica in October, you’ll find the dry season along the Caribbean coast to be the perfect time to visit the beach.

I loved my time on the Caribbean coast and I think you’ll find plenty of things to do in Puerto Viejo to keep you entertained.

The beaches in Costa Rica are generally not overcrowded, so you don’t have to worry about finding space on the sand.

In fact, during my visit to Costa Rica my friends and I were on the beaches by ourselves most of the time. 

Caribbean Beaches in Costa Rica:

• Playa Cocles : This is one of the most popular beaches in the area for both tourists and locals. It’s also popular with surfers, so you can watch them riding the waves if the time is right. There are cafes and bars along this beach if you get hungry or want a cocktail. You can also rent surfboards and bodyboards nearby. 
• Playa Negra : This is a black sand beach and one of the most popular in the area. There are lots of bars and restaurants near this beach, so this is the place to be if you want a livelier atmosphere. It’s also the perfect place to try out some surfing lessons if you’ve been wanting to learn. 
• Punta Uva : This is one of the nicest beaches for swimming because the water is extremely calm on most days. This makes Punta Uva a great spot for snorkeling or taking young kids if you’re on a Costa Rica family vacation.

Make sure you check out more than just one beach while you’re in Costa Rica. I promise it’ll be worth your time.

If you’re willing to put up with the rain and plan to visit beaches on the Pacific coast, Manuel Antonio beach and the Osa Peninsula are popular destinations.

3. Visit the Jaguar Rescue Center

If you’re going to be in Puerto Viejo during your visit to Costa Rica, try to make time for a visit to the Jaguar Rescue Center .

They provide care and rehabilitation to orphaned and injured animals from the surrounding rain forests. 

With a visit here you’ll be able to see some of the local wildlife up close. They typically have jaguars, sloths, monkeys, birds, and snakes in their care along with plenty of other animals. 

Tours are available most mornings and are an excellent way to learn more about the animals you’ll see in Costa Rica.

Plus you’ll get the opportunity to interact with the monkeys if you’re lucky!

The tours are about 90 minutes long and offered Tuesday through Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. The center is closed on Sundays. Tours will cost $20 (USD) per person. 

4. Go Snorkeling

This Costa Rica travel itinerary would not be complete without some snorkeling time.

One of the best spots for snorkeling in Costa Rica is at the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge found about 8 miles south of Puerto Viejo. 

Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is a protected area that includes a reef full of marine life just offshore.

Those swimming and snorkeling near the reef can see lobsters, anemones, urchins, crabs, sea cucumbers, shrimp, sponges, and even green turtles. 

Other areas along the Caribbean coast that are good for snorkeling are Punta Uva, Puerto Viejo, and Cahuita National Park. 

Snorkel gear can be rented along many of the beaches if you’d like to go snorkeling on your own.

Tours can also be booked from your hotel and hostel if you’d prefer to go with a guide. Most guided tours will last between four to six hours and include multiple snorkeling spots.

5. Visit Tortuguero National Park

One of the most unique things to do in Costa Rica in October is to visit Tortuguero National Park for turtle nesting season.

The park sits on a sandbar on the country’s northern Caribbean coast. It’s covered in rainforest and considered a major nesting site for green turtles. 

The Sea Turtle Conservancy is also found here and runs a research station and several exhibits.

The exhibits provide information about the conservancy’s work along with tons of information about the turtles that are native to the area. 

The best time to see Green Sea Turtles at Tortuguero is July to mid-October. The best time to see Leatherback Sea Turtles if from February to June. 

Even if your visit to Costa Rica is planned outside of the various turtle nesting times, Tortuguero is still a fantastic place to visit.

Aside from turtles, you’ll get to experience lots of other wildlife when visiting Tortuguero National Park.

The area is also home to jaguars, tapirs, sloths, birds, snakes, and many other creatures.

6. Go hiking

There are many great destinations for hiking in Costa Rica in October.

Some of the most popular hiking destinations are the Arenal and La Fortuna area, Monteverde, and Rincon de la Vieja Volcano National Park. 

These destinations are in the central and Pacific coast region of the country, meaning you will likely experience rain while hiking in these areas.

It is recommended you bring waterproof hiking boots and a rain jacket for hiking in these areas of Costa Rica in October. 

If you prefer a drier hiking experience in Costa Rica in October, head over to the rainforests near Tortuguero National Park or Cahuita National Park.

Both areas are packed with local wildlife from sloths to jaguars, to howler monkeys.  Be sure to stick to the trails and make sure somebody knows where you’re headed.

As always, be respectful when encountering local wildlife and view from a distance. 

If you encounter injured animals during your visit to Costa Rica please contact one of the country’s many rescue centers and sanctuaries for assistance. 

7. Take surf lessons

The Caribbean coast of Costa Rica is a very popular destination for surfers from around the world.

The famous Salsa Brava surf break is located near Puerto Viejo and is said to be one of the best surf spots in all of Central America.

I am told Salsa Brava is only recommended for experienced surfers, so if you’re just learning you’ll want to avoid this surf break. 

For beginners or those still sharpening their skills, you can head over to Playa Cocles which is a short walk from the center of Puerto Viejo.

This beach is excellent for beginners and those looking to take lessons. 

If you’re looking for information on local surf schools, here are a few options near Puerto Viejo:

• Surf the Jungle
• Caribbean Surf School
• La Costa De Papito

Prices vary between the shops but seem to average between $40 to $60 per day. If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, you can always just rent a board and teach yourself.

8. Go diving

Costa Rica is a wonderful diving destination in Central America for both beginners and those with more experience.

For the more experienced divers, you may wish to consider heading to the country’s Pacific coast to see Bull Sharks near Bat Islands, Hammerheads at Cocos Islands or go cave diving at Catalina Islands.

These diving destinations along the Pacific coast are said to be best for experienced divers due to the strong currents in this area. 

For new divers, the Caribbean coast makes an excellent choice. The protected reefs make for safe diving conditions with tons of beautiful marine life. 

For those looking to try diving for the first time or get their certification, Punta Uva Dive Center offers both introductory courses and full certification. Prices are very reasonable. 

If you’re not sure diving is for you, they offer a one day course that gets you in the water and familiar with the equipment for about $85.

9. Try Ziplining

Costa Rica is a popular place for ziplining, especially since the country is covered in rainforests.

Viewing the forests from the treetops is an incredible experience and one you won’t soon forget.

If you’re adventurous and not afraid of heights, I recommend trying a ziplining tour while you’re here. 

There are two main ziplining tours available along the Caribbean coast area near Puerto Viejo. 

The first is Terraventuras . Their tour lasts about 4 hours and includes pick up from your hotel or hostel in Puerto Viejo. The cost of the trip is about $59 per person. 

The second ziplining tour in the area is called Gecko Trail.

Their tour also includes pick up and drop off from your hotel or hostel in Puerto Viejo and will last about 4 hours. The cost is the same as above at $59 per person.

Both of these ziplining tours get excellent reviews. You can check out their websites via the links above to see which you’d like to try. 

If you’ll be exploring any other parts of the country during your visit, ask your hotel for recommendations for ziplining tours.

They are available all over the country so you should have no problem finding one no matter where you happen to be.

10. Visit Arenal Volcano National Park

If you’re willing to brave the rain, a visit to Arenal Volcano National Park must be on your list of things to do in Costa Rica in October.

Arenal makes a great stop either just before or just after you make your way over to the Caribbean coast.

While Arenal volcano is one of the most popular things to do in Costa Rica, crowds will be significantly lighter if you’re visiting in October.

I recommend spending at least two nights near Arenal so you have time to explore the different sections of the park.

Visitors can hike around the volcano, explore the surrounding rain forest, swim in the natural springs, visit the country’s largest lake, and view some impressive waterfalls. 

Arenal is the perfect area to experience the country’s rainforests during the green season.

The trees and plants will be bright green and full of wildlife unique to the region. Plus, you’ll get to see one of the country’s many volcanoes up close.

You can get to Arenal volcano in about 4 hours from San Jose. There are several shuttle services operating in Costa Rica. Most will charge about $55 (USD) one way and include pickup from your hotel or hostel in San Jose.

Lodging on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast

There are some really unique and beautiful eco lodging accommodations in Costa Rica.

If you’ll be traveling along the Caribbean coast I recommend booking your hotel near Puerto Viejo if possible. This is where I stayed during my visit and really loved the area.

Here are a few ideas for hotels and lodges in the area:

• Hotel Banana Azul : This is the hotel I wish I had stayed at but didn’t. This is a beautiful property surrounded by rainforest and right on the beach. Their restaurant serves delicious food as well.
• Le Cameleon Boutique Hotel : This hotel has a beautiful pool and bar area with well-appointed rooms. It’s located right next to Playa Cocles.
• Samasati Yoga and Wellness Retreat : If you’re looking for a nice place that includes yoga and meditation, this is your place.
• Tree House Lodge : If you’re looking for unique and eco-friendly accommodations check out the Tree House Lodge. They are a 10-acre oceanfront ecolodge with six different houses available for rent including a treehouse and a school bus.

If you have more time to spend in Central America consider heading from Puerto Viejo to Bocas del Toro . The beaches in Bocas are just beautiful.

Even if the weather is very wet in the rest of the country, Costa Rica’s Caribbean destinations are the sunniest during this time of the year, and due to this inverse of weather patterns, some accommodations on the Pacific will actually close for the month due to high rains, while Caribbean lodges are often booked up months in advance. 

The rain is often limited to a few hours each afternoon, so you can still enjoy plenty of beautiful sunny days while traveling during the green season.

Catch the tail end of the whale watching season in Costa Rica

Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: What to Expect Month by Month

This a tough topic. The question should really be: When is the best time for ME to visit Costa Rica? Yes, the answer depends on the individual. So while we can’t answer this question for you, we can give you some information to help you make your decision.

Dry Season vs Green Season

First things first, there are two tropical seasons in Costa Rica: dry season and green season. December through April is the dry season. May through November is the green season. The dry season is also the high season as many snow birds make their escape to the tropics, and there is less rainfall. While the high season is the most popular travel time, the green season is often a favorite among Costa Rica Experts. The green season typically experiences sunny mornings (great for morning excursions) and afternoon rain showers (perfect for a rejuvenating afternoon repose). There are many perks of traveling in rainy season like discounted hotel rates, less crowds, and more active wildlife.

Varying Climates

Keep in mind that the landscapes and climates of Costa Rica vary greatly by region. The coasts are generally warmer, and the highlands are generally cooler. As you move south along the Pacific coast, humidity levels rise. The Caribbean Coast is generally hot, humid, and rainy year-round, with a short break in September and October. February & march, july & august, september & october.

The beginning of January is a peak travel season in Costa Rica, as crowds from the Christmas and New Year holidays linger. It is also dry season in Costa Rica, when clear skies accommodate travelers. The beginning months of dry season are particularly appealing as the landscape is still verdant from the recent green season, despite reduced rainfall.

We’re still in dry season, and the weather remains fantastic. There is generally a spike in tourist traffic over Easter and the week leading up to it. Plan ahead for travel over Presidents’ Day weekend, Spring Break, and Easter. Hotel availability is limited over these popular travel dates, and some hotels increase rates over peak travel dates. Book early.

April marks the last month of the dry season, although it can last a couple weeks longer in the arid northwest region of Guanacaste. Travelers can still enjoy clear skies, although the vegetation, particularly on the North Pacific Coast, has lost some of its vibrant green sparkle after months of little rain. April is also historically one of the hottest months of the year. If Easter falls in April, you can expect a spike in tourist traffic over the holiday. Plus, there may still be spring break travelers, so you’ll want to book your vacation well in advance.

Green Season

The start of green season in May is a much needed cool off from the intense heat of the dry season. Temperatures begin to drop as the hotel prices and number of tourists do. May is a bit of a transition month, in which the rain picks up, but not quite at the rate of later green season months.

The rain brings out the best in Costa Rica’s flora.

In June, you’ll see a small surge in tourists as the kids get let out of school and family vacations start. Everything begins to look much more green as the rain brings the rainforest to life.

It’s green season in Costa Rica, but a brief pocket of sunshine breaks up the rain in July in what locals call veranillo , or little summer. Exact veranillo days and duration vary from year to year, and may even continue into the start of August. Afternoons are rainy with typically clear mornings (perfect for morning tours). The weather is generally good, and hotel prices low. July and August are popular travel times due to less rain, family summer vacations, and active green season wildlife. Some hotels increase their prices in these months.

This is the peak of green season on the Pacific Coast, but don’t let the rain keep you away. Your opportunities for spotting wildlife are best in green season. Surfing and rafting are fantastic. Hotel availability, prices, and service are at their best. Plus, there are no crowds. You may even find you have the beach all to yourself.

Rain typically clears up on the Caribbean Coast in September & October.

On the typically rainy southern Caribbean Coast, the rain lightens up in September and October, making it a great time to visit. Talk with a Costa Rica Expert about the best destinations to visit during this time of year.

The end of November marks the start of Costa Rica’s busy season, as holidays and cold weather are a great excuse to escape. November is a bit of a bridge month, when the rain has slowed down, and the crowds begin to trickle in.

The beginning of December is less-crowded, with difficult to predict weather. Typically, the sky clears up as the rains begin to taper off for dry season, and you can experience beautiful beach days on the Pacific Coast. In Guanacaste, the most arid region of the country, the foliage begins to turn golden. We enter peak season for travel at the end of December around the holidays. With less rain, there is more uninterrupted pool time. With that, hotel prices rise. Our advice is to book your holiday vacations well in advance to reserve the best hotel rooms and take advantage of any early bird specials.

Costa Rica is home to everything from steamy rainforests and misty cloud forests, to still-smoking volcanoes and sublime beaches strung along Pacific and Caribbean coastlines.

The country’s motto is pura vida – or pure life – and a quarter of its landmass is protected by national parks and reserves , offering a wealth of wildlife watching among untamed nature.

And there’s enough adrenaline-fuelled action to satisfy the most demanding thrill-seeker, from white water rafting to zip lining and serious surf breaks. Below, we look at the places you won’t want to miss.

1. La Fortuna

Best place for outdoor adventures  

Volcán Arenal’s picture-perfect cone looms over the town of La Fortuna . Up until 2010, it thrilled visitors with plumes of smoke and lava pyrotechnics, but today climbing to the summit is illegal.

You can still get up close to its lava-covered lower slopes by taking the Las Coladas trail, one of several unforgettable hikes around Volcán Arenal National Park, about 7km (10.5 miles) west of La Fortuna.

Hike down to La Fortuna’s impressive waterfall , which plunges out of thick vegetation into an emerald-green pool, or get muddy on a spelunking tour through the limestone labyrinth of the Venado Caves . 

Near Volcán Arenal National Park, around 7km (10.5 miles) west of La Fortuna, there’s horseback riding, mountain biking, rappelling and ziplining on offer too, along with kayaking and windsurfing on Lake Arenal. The region’s natural hot springs make the perfect place to ease weary muscles.

2. Osa Peninsula  

Best place for getting off-the-beaten path

The wild and remote Osa Peninsula is all rainforests, rivers and mangroves, ringed by pristine beaches. 

Wake to a chorus of chirrups, whoops, caws and the sonorous roar of howler monkeys. Watch spider monkeys put on an impressive display of treetop gymnastics while scarlet macaws squawk and preen.

It’s just a typical morning in the Parque Nacional Corcovado , one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

The gin-clear waters of Bahía Drake are home to humpback whales and dolphins, and it’s the jumping-off point for diving and snorkeling tours to the marine playground of Isla del Caño.

Planning tip: The whale season generally runs between the months of December and April and July and October.

3. Monteverde

Best place for birds, butterflies and cloud forest canopy tours

Away from Costa Rica’s sun-soaked beaches and steamy rainforests, Monteverde’s mist-wreathed cloud forest reserves sit high on the country’s mountainous spine. It’s one of the world’s biodiversity hot spots, with a staggering array of flora and fauna. 

At Curi-Cancha – a cattle ranch turned private reserve – trails wind through primary, secondary and open forests buzzing with jewel-colored hummingbirds and rowdy toucans. 

Look out for the aptly named resplendent quetzal with its brilliant green and crimson plumage and sweeping tail feathers – they’re easier to spot during the mating season from March to June. 

For a bird’s eye view of the forest, take an adrenaline-fueled ride on a zipline, skimming the canopy at high speed – Sky Trek Monteverde has an automatic braking system, useful for kids and anxious adults.

Planning tip: Take a guided night walk to discover a different side to the forest, when nocturnal critters such as sloths, snakes and kinkajous get active to a soundtrack of the frog chorus.

4. The Nicoya Peninsula  

Best place for sand and surf

Famed for its postcard-perfect beaches and sweet Pacific swells, Nicoya has something for wave riders of all levels.

There’s wildlife too: just north of the party town of Tamarindo , Grande Beach – part of Las Baulas National Marine Park – is a nesting site for leatherback turtles from October to March.

Among the peninsula’s finest strips of sand are the blissfully secluded Playa Barrigona and Sámara , popular with both Ticos and visitors thanks to its calm, safe waters that are ideal for novice surfers. 

Further south, the remote, jungle-backed town of Santa Teresa – long a haunt of surfers-in-the-know – is now a hip hangout with cool cafes, sushi restaurants and designer boutiques.

Like an advert for living the pura vida , Nicoya has been named one of the world’s five Blue Zones , where residents have longer-than-average lifespans thanks to their healthy habits.

Planning tip: Nicoya’s surf season runs from December to April; most surf schools are closed during the rainy season, from August to November.

5. The Caribbean Coast

Best place for turtle spotting

On Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast , the flooded forest of Parque Nacional Tortuguero has been dubbed a mini Amazon.

It’s home to 400 bird species and from July to October, it's a sanctuary for nesting green sea turtles. Look out for manatees, caiman and crocodiles as you tour its skinny waterways by boat or kayak.

To the south is the diminutive Parque Nacional Cahuita and its namesake village, which protects coastal rainforest, coral reefs and pristine beaches.

Further south, the laid-back Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is the Caribbean Coast’s most developed beach town, with an Afro-Caribbean vibe and lively nightlife.

The village of Manzanillo is quieter, set in the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge , where you can snorkel the reefs, kayak through mangroves and hike along rainforest trails. Cycle 4km (2.5 miles) to chill on the idyllic palm-fringed beach at Punta Uva – set your alarm to catch a spectacular sunrise.

6. Manuel Antonio National Park

Best place for getting up close to wildlife

Fronted by spectacular volcanic-sand beaches and backed by lush rainforest,  Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio is Costa Rica’s smallest national park and one of its most popular.

Hiking along its well-marked trails is one of the easiest ways to spot wildlife – but don’t expect to have it to yourself.

You may spot a black spiny-tailed iguana perched above the entrance gate, boisterous squirrel monkeys scampering from tree to tree or marauding racoons searching for a snack.

And with the help of a guide, you might catch a glimpse of a flamboyant poison dart frog no bigger than a thumbnail or a shadow that turns into a snoozing three-toed sloth.

Planning tip: Get to the park before 10am to avoid tour groups and peak heat – it opens at 7am and is closed on Tuesdays.   

7. The Central Valley

Best place for volcanoes, coffee and rafting

At the heart of the country, the  Central Valley encompasses the cities of San José, Heredia, Cartago and Alajuela, and three active volcanoes. Irazú is the country’s highest – on a clear day, you can see both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts from the summit.

Although temperatures are on the rise in October, and daily highs can easily be in the 80s, it is still very much the rainy season. Be prepared for frequent rain, although it tends to be in the late afternoon into the evening. Although Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast is hot and busy in October, the crowds won’t be in Arenal. Costa Rica in May: Guide to Weather, Where to Go, What to Do

C osta Rica in May is the start of the rainy season throughout most of the country. It is a great time to visit, but there are a few things you should know as you plan your trip.

Thomas and I created this post to detail the pros and cons of May in Costa Rica. We have lived in Costa Rica since 2016, so we are somewhat experts on the weather you can expect each month of the year. We also included tips on what to pack, the best areas to visit, and the pros and cons of this time of year.

So, let’s get to all the tips to make sure you have an amazing experience while visiting Costa Rica during the month of May.

Costa Rica in May at a Glance

• This is a transition month between the end of dry season and the start of rainy season. Weather will be hot and sunny with occasional afternoon rain showers on the Pacific Coast.
• Typically tourism starts to go down a bit at this time of year. That means prices also get a bit lower.
• Focus on sun-blocking clothing, high SPF sunscreen, bug spray, rain protection, and lots of water for hydration. This time of year is humid!

Should You Travel to Costa Rica in May? 

We say definitely! It’s actually one of the best months of the year to visit Costa Rica (in our opinion).

Pros of Visiting Costa Rica in May

• The weather should be good. We go into the weather details further in this post, but in general, you can expect perfectly sunny days, afternoon rain storms, and warm evenings.
• Everything will be open at this time. Sometimes later in the year tour companies and hotels close because there are just not enough tourists for there to be a reason to stay open.
• Everything starts turning green again after the dry season, and it is so beautiful!
• There are still a lot of tourists, but it is not as busy as peak high season ( January – April).
• You can expect what is referred to as “mid-season prices”. That means rates aren’t as high as in peak season, but not as low as later in the year when the chance of rain is higher. 
• Hotels, activities etc, aren’t as full.
• Wildlife can be more active because the temperatures cool down a bit. It’s a great time to visit national parks !

Cons of Visiting Costa Rica in May

• This is the beginning of the green season and you may have to contend with afternoon rain.
• Rates go down a bit, but not as much as later in the year
• The mosquitoes tend to be worse in the rainy season versus dry season

Costa Rica Weather in May

​​May is the start of the rainy season in many parts of Costa Rica, which means you can expect some wet weather during your visit. 

The weather can vary significantly depending on where you are in the country. 

The sun rises daily around 5:15 am and sets around 5:50 pm. 

One thing to keep in mind is that the weather forecast online is never correct during the rainy season. They typically predict rain showers all day long. This is luckily all lies.

Pacific Coast

On the Pacific Coast, we suggest getting up as early as possible. Usually, you won’t really be able to sleep in anyway because the however monkeys and other loud wildlife will make sure you are up early.

In our opinion, the early morning hours are the very best time of the day. It’s beautiful!

You can expect hot days (mid 80’s Fahrenheit) with plenty of sunshine until the early afternoon.

Around 2pm the afternoon rain storms usually roll in. These storms typically last for an hour or two. This is a great time to take a little siesta. 

After that, the weather tends to cool off a bit. But, “cools off” is a relative term. Really, it typically gets down to the mid to high seventies Fahrenheit. 

The evenings tend to be clear with nice sunset views. 

After sunset, you will need bug spray.

On the northern Pacific Coast in the Guanacaste Province , you can expect even less rain. Typically this area tends to stay dry a bit longer.

San Jose & Central Valley

San Jose and the Central Valley area is always bit cooler than the Pacific Coast.

The average daytime temperatures range from around 75°F to 80°F (24°C to 27°C), while nighttime temperatures usually drop to around 60°F to 65°F (16°C to 18°C).

Just note that temperatures can vary depending on the specific location within the Central Valley. Higher elevation areas tend to be cooler.

Northern Mountains   

The Northern Mountains region consists of La Fortuna and Monteverde.

The days should be clear enough that you will be able to enjoy good views in mountain towns. For example, Arenal Volcano should be mostly clear for viewing. 

In Monteverde , you may have more rain. Usually, it is not super heavy, but the rain can occur more throughout the day and tends not to be limited to only the afternoons. 

Caribbean Coast

The Caribbean Coast has the opposite rainy and dry season the Pacific Coast. May in the Caribbean can mean heavier rains. In our experience, usually, it rains more in the evening than during the day, but you never know.

Average highs range from 80°F to 85°F (27°C to 29°C) and lows from 70°F to 75°F (21°C to 24°C).

What to Pack for Costa Rica in May

In May, layers are also a good idea because it can get cool in the evenings after the daily rain. 

• Lightweight and breathable clothing (shorts, T-shirts, tank tops). We suggest opting for moisture-wicking clothing that also blocks UV rays. 
• Long-sleeved shirts and lightweight pants for cooler evenings and sun protection
• Swimsuits for beach and water activities
• Comfortable walking shoes or sandals for exploring
• Rain jacket for occasional showers during the transition to the rainy season
• Sunglasses for sun protection

Weather-Specific Items:

• Sunscreen (high SPF) for sun protection in the tropical climate
• Insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes, especially during evenings
• Daypack for carrying essentials during day trips and excursions. I suggest a dry bag. 
• Plastic bags or waterproof pouches for protecting electronics and important documents from rain

Outdoor and Adventure Gear:

• Sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes for exploring natural trails. We like Keens .
• Pocket binoculars for wildlife viewing, especially in national parks
• Refillable water bottle to stay hydrated during outdoor activities. I suggest LifeStraw bottles .
• A glasses strap to keep your sunglasses secure during adventures like zip lining and boat trips
• Quick-dry microfiber travel towel for convenience on the go

Electronics and Accessories:

• Camera or smartphone for capturing the stunning landscapes and wildlife
• Portable charger to keep devices powered during outdoor excursions

Health and Safety:

• Travel first aid kit with basic medications, bandages, and any necessary prescriptions
• Motion sickness tablets if you’re sensitive to travel on winding roads or if you plan to take boat trips
• Hydration tablets or electrolyte supplements for staying hydrated in the warm weather
• Hat with a wide brim for added sun protection, especially during outdoor activities

Miscellaneous Items:

• Copies of important documents (passport, travel insurance, itinerary)
• Zip lock bags to separate wet items in your luggage

The Best Places to Visit and Places to Avoid

There is nowhere I would suggest completely avoiding. You will likely have more rain on the Caribbean Coast, but it is a beautiful area to visit.

As always, you can expect more tourists in the bigger towns (La Fortuna, Monteverde, Playas del Coco, Tamarindo, Jaco, Manuel Antonio) but it shouldn’t be too crazy. 

Things to Do at this Time of Year

This is a great time of year for pretty much all activities. When booking your Costa Rica tours, keep in mind that there may be afternoon storms. We like to try and schedule as much as we can in the morning to avoid the possibility of being rained out. 

Some of our favorite activities are:

• Visit a Waterfall : The water levels will be a bit higher than during the dry season, so you can enjoy a better experience.
• Go Hiking in a National Park : We love it when everything turns lush and green again. Plus, with fewer crowds, the national parks are super enjoyable. This is a great time to go to Corcovado National Park or Manuel Antonio National Park .
• Go Zip Lining : Again, with everything starting to turn green and vibrant in May it is a great time to get overhead views of the jungle canopy with a zip-lining adventure. We suggest this activity in Monteverde or La Fortuna .
• Take a Catamaran Sunset Tour : This is a fun activity to do after the brief afternoon rain shower. A catamaran tour typically includes a fun time out on a nice boat, Usually, these tours are a bit cheaper than in the high season.
• Visit the Beautiful Beaches : It is always a good time to visit the amazing beaches. All beaches in Costa Rica need to have free public access by law. That means there is thousands of miles of coastline for you to explore.

Booking Transportation

Typically, we think renting a car is the best way to easily get around.

In May, demand isn’t as high, but it is still best to book somewhat early because things can still book out.

Booking Hotels

We like to use Booking.com and reserve places with free cancellations up to a certain date. This will give you the most flexibility if your plans change or if you find a better option. Just make sure to remember to cancel in time!

We also really like VRBO for booking villas or houses. Again, we suggest filtering by places that allow free cancellation if you are concerned about your plans possibly changing.

When booking a place make sure it has AC. sometimes you might be fine with just an electric fan, but we have definitely learned to give preference to places with AC because the evenings can stay semi-warm. 

Holidays and Festivals

There is one Costa Rican national holiday in May.

Labor Day : May 1st is celebrated as Labor Day in Costa Rica, and it is a public holiday. Many businesses and shops are closed, and there are often parades and demonstrations in the major cities.

Another fun festival is, Día de San Isidro Labrador on On May 15th. This event is observed in various towns near San Jose such as San Isidro de Heredia, Perez Zeledon, and Atenas.

This festivity pays homage to the patron saint of farming. It features vibrant parades, traditional cuisine, and a ceremonial blessing of the crops.

Our Travel Tips for Visiting Costa Rica in May

• Check out flying into both the San Jose and Liberia Airport for your trip to Costa Rica in May. More and more flights are flying into Liberia Airport and sometimes you might find great deals. We like San Jose Airport because it is very centrally located, but Liberia is a lot less hectic and great if you are planning to visit the Guanacaste Province or Northern Mountain region.
