Swiss cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Lucerne provide a blend of rich history, cultural experiences, and delicious culinary delights, inviting solo travelers to explore museums, galleries, and local eateries at their own pace.

If traveling solo to Switzerland from one of the neighboring countries of Italy, Austria, France, or Germany, then hopping on the public transport network is equally as easy, with a vast network of trains throughout the country.

The shoulder seasons of spring (April through mid-June) and autumn (mid-September through October) are the best months to take a solo trip to Switzerland.

October, in particular, is great for visiting Switzerland solo as you might get the chance to witness the well-known Alpabzug, otherwise known as “when the cows come home from the mountains.” During this time, you’ll find elaborately decorated cows and festivities celebrating the return of the herds.

Getting around Switzerland is also relatively easy, even if you don’t speak one of the many languages.

With a great network of public transport options connecting the larger cities to lesser-known destinations throughout the country, solo travel in Switzerland is a breeze.

With numerous trains, boats, trams, cable cars, and funiculars to choose from, the best way to make the most of solo female travel in Switzerland is to buy a Swiss Travel Pass or a series of Day Passes , depending on how long you wish to spend at each location and what your budget is.

Best Places For Solo Travel In Switzerland

One of the biggest benefits of traveling solo is getting to create your own schedule without having to compromise.

While that is great and can make traveling alone fun , sometimes it’s helpful to have some guidance on where to visit, so here are the best places for solo travel in Switzerland.

My current home, and somewhere that should be high on any list of places to visit in Switzerland solo, is Basel.

Located in northwest Switzerland, this small city is a fantastic place for solo travel thanks to the numerous attractions across the city throughout the year and the fact that you can get from one end of the city center to the other in under half an hour via tram.

There is also a wide range of accommodation options, so it’s perfect for every budget.

In the colder months, there are plenty of art galleries and museums to keep you busy — like the Tinguely Museum , Kunst Museum , and Natural History Museum Basel .

You should also visit the Basler Münster , the city’s main cathedral. Built between 1019 and 1500, it’s historic, beautiful, and offers an amazing view over Basel.

Basel also has a wonderful autumn festival called Herbstmesse and of course the famous winter Christmas Markets .

Visiting Switzerland in the summer ? You can opt to sit alongside the famous Rhine River or even go for a swim.

Additionally, there are many free summer music festivals as well as numerous parks and gardens — all of which are free to visit.

A few greenspaces not to miss include the University of Basel Botanical Garden , which is home to 7,500 different plant species, and Merian Gardens , which is also home to an 18th-century villa.

Basel solo travel is also great as it is well connected to neighboring France and Germany, so if you fancy a day trip across the border, then this is the place in Switzerland to do it from. Both the Black Forest in Germany and the Alsace region in France are accessible by train!

Zurich is another of the best places for solo travel in Switzerland, as it has plenty to see, great food and accommodation options, and fantastic public transport that connects across the whole city as well as Lake Zurich.

Additionally, you’ll find many other solo travelers here, as Zurich is home to Switzerland’s largest airport.

If you plan on staying a few days, the Zurich City Card is great for trains, trams, and buses throughout the city.

As with most cities in Switzerland, you can easily see the main attractions in Zurich in a day or two.

In terms of specific things to do alone in Zurich, make sure to visit Altstadt , a beautiful old town filled with historic architecture and viewpoints over the city.

The Grossmunster , a Romanesque-style Protestant church, and its surrounding Zwingliplatz square are perfect examples of this, with great views across the Limmat River and over to St. Peter’s Church — which is the oldest parish church in Zurich.

You’ll also find numerous interesting museums and art galleries to enjoy on your Switzerland solo trip, like the:

• Swiss National Museum , which is the perfect place to learn about Switzerland’s culture and history. It also has a variety of exhibitions that change regularly, highlighting various aspects of Swiss culture.
• Beyer Clock and Watch Museum (Uhrenmuseum Beyer), which houses ancient, antique, and modern clocks and watches, some of which show the history of timekeeping from before 1000 BC!

Another can’t-miss attraction on a solo trip to Zurich is the Lake Zurich waterfront , where you can take a scenic stroll while enjoying panoramic views of the pristine lake framed by urban architecture, lush parks, and the distant Swiss Alps.

Around the lake, you can also visit one of my favorite places in Zurich, the Temple Garden by the Lake , a beautiful and peaceful Chinese garden. It’s one of the highest-ranking gardens outside of China.

Love luxury shopping? Make sure to walk Zurich’s main downtown street, Bahnhofstrasse , which connects Lake Zurich with the city’s main railway station.

Along the street, you’ll find loads of high-end shops. Even if you can’t afford to buy anything, simply window shopping and seeing the beautiful buildings are worth the walk.

As with the rest of Switzerland, Zurich solo travel is generally very safe; however, it’s recommended to avoid Landstrasse after dark, as this former red light district can get a little rowdy.

Lucerne, a charming city nestled amid the breathtaking panorama of mountains and Lake Lucerne, is a great place for solo travel in Switzerland. It’s renowned for its well-preserved medieval architecture, wooden footbridges, and vibrant cultural scene blending nature, history, and art.

As it’s relatively small, the main tourist attractions are fairly close together, so getting around on public transport or by walking is easy.

There are numerous free Lucerne attractions you should add to your Switzerland itinerary, such as:

• Hofkirche St. Leodegar , a beautiful church with a quaint interior and mini cloister garden.
• Kapellbrücke  (Chapel Bridge) and Spreuerbrücke (Spreuer Bridge), two beautiful wooden footbridges often covered in flower boxes that link perfectly to…
• Lucerne Altstadt , where you can take in old town charm, sip coffee at cute cafes, and grab a tasty bite to eat along the River Reuss.
• Musegg Wall (Museggmauer), a lesser-known attraction that is also my favorite. It’s Lucerne’s old city wall that you can climb up to see Lucerne from above.

Lucerne is also an ideal place to base yourself for a few days as it is easy to reach the local mountains and other smaller, lesser-known destinations via public transport from here.

Hopping in a cable car bound for a mountain top, or on a boat for a cruise across a lake are some of the best things to do alone in Switzerland.

A few of the best day trips from Lucerne for solo travelers include:

• Mount Pilatus , which is the nearest mountain to Lucerne and can be accessed via cable car or funicular railway.
• Mount Rigi and Mount Burgenstock , both of which require a boat trip and then a funicular train trip.

4. The Bernese Oberland

You can’t visit Switzerland and not venture to the Bernese Oberland. Here, you can experience solo travel in the Swiss Alps!

Covering a vast area that includes Interlaken , the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen valleys, both Brienzersee (Lake Brienz) and Thunersee (Thun Lake) and all the towns and villages that lie on them, as well as numerous other mountain villages, the Bernese Oberland is a great place to either base yourself for a few days or as the only place you visit on a solo trip to Switzerland.

This area, and Interlaken in particular, is known for its adrenaline-fueled activities. From skydiving out of helicopters to paragliding from mountain tops, base jumping in mountain valleys, and seasonal sports like tobogganing in the winter and ziplining in the summer, there is no shortage of adventure travel experiences.

Additionally, Interlaken is on the main Switzerland solo travel trail, so you’re almost certain to run into other travelers looking to make friends on the road .

Even if you’re not an adrenaline junkie, Interlaken is still worthwhile, as there are many options for day trips. You can cruise on pristine lakes , visit nearby mountain towns, and explore the mountains themselves.

A few personal recommendations for day trips from Interlaken include:

Along with natural beauty, the Bernese Oberland area is a wonderful Swiss destination thanks to the friendly locals as well as the wide range of accommodation and food options for every traveler.

My personal favorite Bernese Oberland accommodation is the log cabins at Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen. Here you’ll enjoy a central location surrounded by stunning mountains. You’re also right next to the beautiful Staubbach Waterfall , and can also enjoy delicious Swiss food in their onsite restaurant.

5. Lausanne

If you dream of experiencing solo travel on Lake Geneva, this one is for you!

Another great place to visit while traveling solo in Switzerland is Lausanne. Situated on the shores of Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) and within easy reach of both the vibrant city of Geneva and the beautiful resort town of Montreux , Lausanne is a beautiful and historic city in the French-speaking part of Switzerland.

As an Olympic Capital, the city boasts an Olympic park called Parc Olympique and the Olympic Museum along the lakeside — as well as a stunning medieval old town featuring the Lausanne Cathedral with impressive views from its bell tower, and boat trips on Lake Geneva, including crossings to France.

Along with boating, one of the top things to do alone at Lake Geneva is strolling the Ouchy Promenade , which goes for 1 kilometer from Port d’Ouchy and allows you to enjoy the beauty of the water. Along the way, you can take photos, go swimming, and even rent a paddle boat.

Lausanne is also a great base for some amazing day trips. Be sure to take a local train to the nearby Lavaux Vineyard Terraces , which hold UNESCO World Heritage Site status due to their cultural landscape significance.

Dating back to the 11th century, these vineyards showcase a centuries-old tradition of viticulture and wine production on steep terraced slopes along Lake Geneva, making them the perfect place to taste some of the local Swiss wine as well as hike through the impressive scenery.

Nearby, you can also visit Montreux which is also well known for its music festivals and cultural events, so if you plan on visiting be sure to check out if there is one happening. The Montreux Jazz Festival in July is particularly good.

Now that we’ve discussed where to go when traveling solo in Switzerland, let’s go over some important tips to keep in mind:

1. Know how to stay safe while traveling solo in Switzerland

If you’ve ever wondered “Is Switzerland safe to travel alone?” the answer is a resounding “Yes!”; however, it’s still wise to take precautions.

Actually, one of the most important things to do while traveling Switzerland solo is to make sure someone knows your plan for the day, especially if you intend on hiking alone .

If staying in a hostel, campsite, or hotel, the people at the reception will typically be more than happy to help with this.

Also be sure to have any apps and maps that you might need, as well as a power bank to ensure your phone is always charged.

For instance, if you’ll be hiking in the mountains, install the Swiss Topo App and White Risk App , so you can be kept aware of any changes to the trails. Another good one is the SBB Mobile App , which can help you navigate public transportation in Switzerland.

Additionally, AllTrails is great for trail maps — including offline trail maps if you opt for their pro version.

2. Create a solo travel budget

Switzerland can be a hard country to budget for as it isn’t exactly known for being cheap.

That being said, if you plan in advance you can get very good deals on public transport tickets as well as cheaper accommodation in Switzerland for solo travelers, especially if you visit during a shoulder season (April through mid-June or mid-September through October).

Saver Day Pass public transport tickets are one of the best ways to reduce costs, with the cheapest starting at 39 CHF for transport pretty much anywhere in the country for the entire day. Just note that some cable cars aren’t included.

The further in advance you purchase the ticket, the better deal you will get. If you plan on traveling solo through Switzerland for a while then the Swiss Travel Pass may be the cheaper option.

Another way to travel Switzerland on a budget is to not eat out in restaurants for every meal, as that is a surefire way to go over budget.

Instead, opt to eat breakfast at your accommodation or pick up a fresh baked good from a local bäckerei (bakery), then grab a takeaway lunch from a supermarket like Migros or Coop — both of which do great sandwiches and salads.

3. Enjoy solo dining in Switzerland

When you travel alone, you may feel nervous about eating by yourself. Luckily, dining solo is not frowned upon in Switzerland and most places will be more than happy to accommodate this.

Just be sure to book in advance if you are visiting more touristy destinations or you might not be able to get a table.

If you would prefer to eat somewhere that you might get to chat with other people, then look out for Markthalle , which you’ll find in a few of the main cities like Basel and Zurich.

The Markthalle is generally an old market hall, that is now used to hold farmers’ markets and seasonal events, but with numerous permanent food stands showcasing regional and international cuisine. Not only do they offer a vast array of cuisines to try but are also very communal in the sense you eat with others at long tables.

4. Find Swiss accommodation on a budget

For solo travelers in Switzerland who want to save money while still staying in amazing locations, opt for campsites and guesthouses.

Many campsites that are close to well-known destinations offer beautiful cabins you can stay in, and will typically have communal kitchens and common rooms where you can meet other travelers.

This is similar to guest houses and even some smaller hotels, where there are almost always common spaces with kitchen facilities that you can use for both cooking and meeting people.

5. Understand cultural etiquette in Switzerland

A big part of travel is experiencing a way of life that is different from your own, which you’ll also encounter during solo travel in Switzerland.

First and foremost, always be punctual — or even a little early — if you have a reservation. This is especially important if you’ve booked a train ticket, bus ticket, or tour, as they will not wait for you.

Additionally, after 10 pm and all day on Sunday is quiet time across the country, so avoid strolling back to your hostel or campsite talking or singing loudly.

Another thing to get used to while traveling Switzerland solo, especially if you plan on doing a road trip and will be driving, is that pedestrians get the right of way. If you see a pedestrian at a road crossing, you legally have to stop to let them cross.

If you are the pedestrian crossing, just be sure to give a thank you hand wave to be polite. Trams and buses also get right of way in the main cities.

Here is a breakdown of the rough costs for a solo trip in Switzerland. Yes, it’s an expensive country; but with careful planning, you can bring costs down significantly.

Accommodation. On average for nice but budget accommodation with a buffet breakfast you can expect to pay 70 CHF upwards per night. Chalet-style cabins in a campsite are around 150 CHF or more per night, and of course, more high-end accommodation is anything from 350 CHF per night.

Food. The average restaurant will cost roughly 30 CHF per meal not including drinks, where you can expect to pay 8 to 10 CHF for a pint of beer or glass of wine and at least 17 CHF for a cocktail.

Pro tip: Don’t ever ask for water for the table, as it is often the most expensive drink you can order, with a still bottle of water often costing 30 CHF!

Public transport. If you plan on visiting many different locations, then the Swiss Travel Pass is one of the best options, and costs from 232 CHF for 3 days and up to 429 CHF for 15 days. If you are under 26 you also get a further 30% discount on the cost.

If you plan on staying in only a couple of locations, then public transport “city passes” are often included with accommodation stays, making getting around the location free.

Rental car. The average cost for a budget or economy small car is around 50 CHF per day with the price rising rapidly during peak seasons. The longer you hire the car, the better the rate you’ll typically get. If you are looking to hire a campervan then it is around 120 CHF per day.

If you’ve been searching for an epic solo travel destination, then look no further than Switzerland – my favorite country! Switzerland as a solo traveler is just amazing, especially as a solo female traveler.

I have traveled Switzerland extensively – while I sometimes took my little dog with me (once even my family), I love to visit Switzerland as a solo female traveler.

So, I have done a lot of solo travel in Switzerland. And I love it. I’m so confident that you’re going to love it, too. Why am I so confident about it? Because this remarkable country is full of beauty; this stunningly picturesque place will leave a lasting impression on everyone.

Today, I am sharing with you my tips on my experiences as a solo female traveler in Switzerland, and give general tips for your (first) solo trip to Switzerland – how to get around, where to stay, the best activities, and more!

You don’t need a travel companion to make your Swiss adventure one to remember; all you need is your curiosity and adventurous spirit . Whether you want to explore Swiss cities or peaceful mountainside villages, Switzerland has something to offer everyone. With its clean and efficient public transportation system, the country is easily accessible for any traveler.

IS SWITZERLAND SAFE FOR SOLO TRAVELERS?

Switzerland is one of the safest countries in the world . With its very low crime rate and excellent infrastructure, it’s perfect for solo female travelers. The police are highly regarded and Swiss citizens enjoy a high level of security. And as a traveler, you will also benefit from this. However, as always follow common sense and keep the following things in mind.

❗When traveling around Switzerland, make sure to take care of your belongings at all times. Pickpockets operate occasionally in crowded tourist areas, so it’s wise to be extra vigilant when exploring the streets of Switzerland.

❗If you’re taking a train in Switzerland, keep your valuables close to you at all times, especially when traveling during peak hours.

❗When exploring on foot after dark, stick to well-lit areas and be aware of your surroundings.

Overall: Yes, Switzerland is very safe ! And a Switzerland solo trip is a great idea! And yes, this also applies to solo female travelers in Switzerland.

WHERE TO STAY IN WHEN TRAVELING ALONE IN SWITZERLAND

There are a couple of places I recommend staying. The first perfect place to stay for solo travelers in Switzerland is: Interlaken.

If you’re looking for a solo adventure in Switzerland, Interlaken is the place to be! With its plentiful hostels and international visitors, there’s plenty to explore (more on things to do there later).

Also, thanks to its central location, many attractions are quite accessible from the train station Interlaken Ost or Interlaken West. 

Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof

Are you looking for an affordable and fun place to stay in Interlaken ? Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof – Hostel Interlaken is a perfect choice! Located right at the heart of this stunning Swiss city, Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof provides a range of services, including modern rooms with comfortable bedding, free Wi-Fi, a shared kitchen and lounge area, and much more.

I recently stayed in the newly renovated  Hotel du Nord . I actually was very positively surprised (the reviews were not great, but since all rooms were renovated lately, it is a great place to stay). The breakfast was good, too! Zurich is a great base for a solo trip to Switzerland. As the country’s largest city, it has plenty of attractions, from museums and galleries to parks and shops. The old town district is full of charming cobblestone streets lined with cafes, bars, and boutiques.

Zurich also boasts a vibrant nightlife, with clubs and restaurants that stay open late into the night. Plus, it’s conveniently located near many of the country’s most iconic attractions allowing many day trips from Zurich . 

The Glärnischhof by TRINITY

The Glärnischhof by TRINITY  is one of the best-rated mid-range hotels in Zurich. TRINITY’s Glärnischhof is positioned in the heart of Zurich, adjacent to the renowned Bahnhofstrasse and Lake Zurich. 

The rooms are air-conditioned and furnished with a TV featuring international channels, a Beanarella coffee machine, and a bathroom. Additionally, the beds are fitted with specialized air cushioning for ergonomic support. Guests can enjoy a continental breakfast served every morning.

Oldtown Hostel Otter

If you’re planning a solo trip to Zurich, the Oldtown Hostel Otter could be an excellent option. The hostel and its well-established Wüste Bar offer a chic setting for those young at heart in Zurich’s Old Town, just 300 meters away from the Zurich-Stadelhofen train station and the lake.

Of course, I have to mention beautiful Lucerne here as well. Lucerne is the ideal base for your solo trip in Switzerland. Located on the banks of Lake Lucerne, this vibrant city offers a range of activities to travelers who come alone.

Here you can stroll through cobblestone streets and admire stunning views of the Alps, or explore nearby villages like Weggis and Stans. 

Schweizerhof Lucerne

HOW TO GET AROUND SWITZERLAND AS A SOLO TRAVELER

The best mode of transport depends on how far you’re going and how much time you want to spend traveling. I am the most experienced train traveler in the history of Switzerland (take my word for it) and I am also a very experienced driver in Switzerland – and I love both ways of getting around.

CAN I USE PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN SWITZERLAND WHEN I TRAVEL SOLO?

Public transport is an excellent way to get around the country. Switzerland has one of the most extensive public transportation networks in Europe , with reliable buses, trains, trams, boats, and cable cars connecting towns and cities.

The Swiss Travel Pass is an all-in-one ticket that offers unlimited travel on trains, buses, and boats throughout the country. With this pass, you can explore different cities and regions without worrying about purchasing separate tickets for each journey.

Plus, it also gives you free entry to over 500 museums and discounts on selected cable cars, ski lifts, and local transportation services . You also have three mountain excursions included (this also includes Mount Rigi) in 2024 and you get 50% off on most other cable car/gondola/funicular excursions.

The Swiss Travel Passes can make your journey cheaper if you plan on taking multiple journeys over a longer period!

If you prefer driving yourself , then don’t worry – the roads in Switzerland are well-maintained and of high quality. Driving here is generally a pleasant experience, with spectacular views around every corner! Just make sure you’re aware of any speed limits, parking restrictions, or tolls before setting off. If you travel alone, using public transportation might be the cheaper option since you cannot split the high costs of renting a car and petrol by several people.

So, whatever your style of travel, traveling in Switzerland might not be cheap but it is super easy getting from A to B (or even k,y, or z). 

BUDGETING FOR YOUR SWISS SOLO TRIP

Here are some tips for budgeting for a solo trip to Switzerland.

• First, research on the cost of traveling in Switzerland . Prices of food, accommodation, and transportation vary greatly from city to city, so it’s important to know what kind of expenses to expect. However, one thing to be aware of: Switzerland is, overall, just expensive as heck! Even budget destinations are expensive compared to most other countries in the world! You should also factor in additional costs like museum entry fees and any activities that you plan on doing while there.
• Second, create a budget for your trip and stick to it. Consider all of the major expenses like flights, lodging, food, transportation, and activities. Set a daily budget for yourself, so you know how much money you have to spend each day without blowing your budget.
• Third, use comparison sites to search for the best deals on flights and hotels. Booking in advance can often save you money, but if you’re feeling flexible with your dates and destinations, then you can also try to find last-minute deals.
• Fourth, look into various transportation options . If you plan on exploring multiple cities throughout Switzerland, consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass or a car rental (if driving is allowed). With this pass, you can reduce other costs to a minimum, as boat cruises, some mountain excursions, and more than 500 museums are included and there are no extra fees.

HOW TO MEET LOCALS AND MAKE FRIENDS AS A SOLO TRAVELER

Swiss people have a reputation for being very reserved and not wanting to be friends with foreigners. I actually cannot agree with this. I have met Swiss locals in hostels and I am still friends with them, meeting them whenever I am in the country.

And then there are also all the international visitors. However, overall I really enjoy spending time alone. So for me, meeting new people is nice, but not a must! But everyone is different and it might be more important to you.

Making connections:  Meeting other solo travelers is a great way to get tips and experiences that you may not get if you were traveling with a group. Joining online forums or local social media groups dedicated to solo travelers is an easy way to meet others who are also traveling alone. 

Getting involved in local events is another great way to make connections while solo traveling in Switzerland. From music festivals and street fairs to art shows and food markets, there are plenty of fun cultural experiences to be had.

And if you can’t find anything while in the area, make sure to check online for upcoming travel events that might interest you.

WHAT TO DO ALONE IN SWITZERLAND

There are tons of activities to do as a (female) solo traveler – I have done and would do anything a couple, family, etc. would add to their Switzerland itinerary. However, there are a few activities even better suited for solo travelers than others.

Jungfraujoch – Where You´ll Meet the World

The incredible Jungfrau mountain is in the Bernese Alps – you can reach the saddle, known as the Jungfraujoch or The Top Of Europe, by a stunningly scenic railway ride . From the top of Jungfraujoch, you can look out over miles and miles of snow-capped mountains and magical glaciers.

Jungfraujoch is one of the most visited destinations in Switzerland, and rightly so, as it offers a breathtaking view of the Alps. Located at an elevation of 3,454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level, it is the highest point in Europe accessible by railway. 

There are plenty of attractions worth seeing at the top, including Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation Exhibition Hall, Sphinx Observatory, and Snow Fun Park , which allows you to do winter sports activities all year round. And then there are the views of the mighty Aletsch Glacier – the longest glacier in Europe – which should also be on your list.

Several hiking trails wind through meadows along with plenty of opportunities for sightseeing or simply relaxing surrounded by nature’s beauty.

Visiting Jungfraujoch as a solo traveler doesn’t have to be intimidating or lonely; it can be an incredibly rewarding experience when done right. Allowing yourself plenty of time to explore this majestic area while taking breaks between activities can be incredibly calming and satisfying while also ensuring safety during your travels.

The only downside is the rather high price for the ticket (there is no way to hike up all the way) and it can be quite busy at the top!

But even if you are not the most adventurous person (I am not, yet I adore Interlaken), I highly recommend Interlaken as a solo female traveler.

Tips for Traveling Solo on Your Switzerland Holidays

A Switzerland holiday has long been in my bucket list. It wasn’t included in my 70-day backpacking trip in Europe because I lacked the time, but Switzerland has never left my mind. Hopefully this year, I will get a Schengen visa and I can finally visit the Swiss Alps. In the meantime, check out this guest post by fellow blogger Anna Timbrook!

Ah, Switzerland. That mysterious Alpine country that is shrouded in neutrality and filled with chocolate. Most people have heard of Switzerland, seen a couple of photos of the Alps, or eaten Lindt chocolate. However, most people don’t know much about it or why it is such a stunning destination to visit.

As someone who has lived, traveled, and experienced this country for over 15 years, I want to share with you how to make the most of this alpine gem as a solo traveler.

What To Do in Zurich and Other Tips

As a solo traveler, if you are anything like me, you are always on the lookout for ways to meet new people. Sure, you can plonk yourself down in the common room of the hostel and hope to make friends, but there are better ways.

Zurich has some of the best night life in the country, and heading out to some of the most popular bars and nightclubs is certainly a great way to make new friends, especially on a weekend. Clubs, like in most cities, tend to open late, so head out for a bite to eat first and maybe a drink at a nearby bar before the clubs really get pumping.

In the summer, when the nights are hot and the lakes super inviting, there are even bars where you can swim beforehand. I personally love the Letten, Bade Enge, and Rimini.

Another way to get to know people quickly in Zurich is to check out what is going on in terms of Meetups. If you have not used it before, Meetup is a great website for finding fun activities near you.

On any given day, Zurich has dozens of varied activities going on, and even more so on weekends. You can make new friends over a drink, dinner, or even while hiking. You can also get to know the Zurich startup scene, learn a new skill, or just chat to people you would never had a chance to meet otherwise.

Around 20% of Zurich’s workforce is from another country, so there are plenty of people looking to meet new people in this city and you can easily become one of them!

Hostels in Zurich are often in more out of the way places. Not that anything is far or difficult to get to in Zurich. However, if you want to stay right where the action is, City Backpacker Biber in the city center is your best bet.

Things To Do in Geneva — A Taste Of France, In Switzerland

One of the biggest downsides of German-speaking Switzerland is that the locals are quite closed to outsiders. It’s not that they are unfriendly, it’s just a little more difficult to strike up a random conversation or meet new people.

That is where the other parts of Switzerland come in handy, like the French-speaking part in the west. No city is more cosmopolitan and worthy of a visit than Geneva .

Geneva is home to a stunning old town and some great window shopping (unless you have a deep wallet, that is, and then you can buy to your heart’s content). It has some great museums and activities, including the watch museum from one of the original and premiere watchmakers, Patek Philippe .

Perched right on the shores of the gigantic and stunning Lake Geneva also comes with some great benefits. As in Zurich, there are swimming pools in the lake in the center of town. The Place de jeux des Bains des Pâquis is right on the shore in town, and super affordable as well.

As a solo traveler though, you will perhaps be drawn to some of the other group activities in the city. I would personally start off with a walking tour, to get to know the city, and Free Walk is a great way to do this and meet some fellow travelers.

If you have a little more cash on hand, a 3-hour chocolate tour combines a tour with something very Swiss — chocolate. In terms of accommodation, there are a couple of hostels in Geneva with the City Hostel being right downtown.

Lucerne — A City With Stunning Scenery

Whether you are traveling solo or not, Lucerne is an absolute must-see on any Swiss travel itinerary. It has a stunning old town, complete with covered bridge. It is located right on the shores of Lake Lucerne, which is spectacular in and of itself.

To top it all off, the lake is surrounded by mountains, meaning you are right in the heart of the Alps too. What more could you ask for?

I would not come to Lucerne for the night life, so leave that behind in Zurich or Geneva. Instead, make sure you have some space on your camera, because the views and buildings are breathtaking!

There are so many things to do in Lucerne, you might feel a little overwhelmed. Personally this is what I would recommend:

• Explore the old-town, along the river including the iconic Chapel Bridge
• Take a trip on a steam boat (many of the local ferries are run on steam)
• Head to at least one of the local mountains taking a super-steep train up (Pilatus or Rigi)
• If you have more time, add on a trip to Burgenstock and the glass Hammetschwand lift.

It is a little more challenging to find new travel buddies in this city, so I would stay at a hostel, join group walking tours, and again consider Meetup to see what other local activities you can find.

In terms of hostels, Backpackers Lucerne and Lion Lodge are a little further out, but still within walking distance.

Interlaken — This Is Where the Action Is

Interlaken is the action capital of Switzerland, so this is where you come for your adrenaline hit. Even if you are not one to throw yourself off a perfectly good mountain (with a parachute of course) this is the place where all the backpackers congregate, so it’s perfect if you’re traveling solo on your Switzerland holidays.

I would definitely stay in a hostel in Interlaken itself. Balmers used to be the place to be, but these days Villa Sonnenhof tops all the ratings. And remember, when you stay in a hostel in Switzerland, it will usually blow your socks off in terms of cleanliness and facilities.

In terms of activities, you are a little spoiled for choice here. There is anything from skydiving from a helicopter to canyoning. Here are a few things to do in Interlaken that I would definitely not miss:

• A train ride up to the Junfraujoch (where there is year-round snow on the glacier, so lots to do!)
• A trip up to First ski resort to get a prime view of the three kings of the Alps — Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau (you can also do an amazing zipline or cliff walk here )
• Head to Lauterbrunnen to see the stunning valley, waterfalls and the gondola in James Bond (Schilthorn)

Of course, as a solo traveler organizing such adventures from the hostel will often mean you get to do these things with other travelers, so I would always go that route if you can.

Tips for Traveling Solo in Switzerland

As a solo traveler there are a few things that are on your mind that might not concern people in groups or traveling as a couple. This section is for you!

Here are some tips from a local, and someone who has traveled extensively in Switzerland (solo and as a couple) and around the world.

Safety First!

Switzerland is probably one of the safest places on the planet. Honestly, you could walk down the street in a bright green suit waving hundred dollar bills and no one would try to steal them from you. However, having said that, there are a few things to be aware of.

First, theft does happen. Not often, and not very blatantly, but still use your usual amount of caution when on public transport (especially when it’s busy or at night). Keep your valuables in sight (and in hand when it’s busy), but don’t be overly paranoid and hang your backpack on your chest, it’s not that dangerous.

When walking around at night, just be aware that the quieter and more industrial parts of any city are not great places to be alone as a woman late on a weekend. Rarely does anything happen, but try to use public transport, which is everywhere, or Uber if you are in an out of the way place.

If you are in the busier center, then I would be less concerned. Overall though, the chances of anything happening here are slim.

How to Go Around Switzerland

The Swiss public transport is one of the best in the world, and you should definitely take advantage of that. In most cities, you will be able to walk anyway, but sometimes, when you are tired, it’s worth jumping on a bus or tram.

Just familiarize yourself with the system before you head out for the day as sometimes it’s a little confusing (zones, tariffs, etc). It is expensive though, so if you are using the train to travel between cities, I would definitely get the Swiss Rail Pass, which can be used either in specific periods or number of days in a period (this one is usually what you want, as there will be gaps while you stay in a place for a while).

Another option if you know some one local is to get them to order you a Half Tax Card, which might be even better, especially if you will travel a lot.

Eating on a Budget in Switzerland

Switzerland is insanely expensive for most people, especially backpackers. So, if the sight of a $40-meal scares you, then keep reading. If you want to save some money on food, either cook for yourself (which might also not be cheap if you like meat) or try things like Doner Kebab, Indian takeaway, or some burger joints. The supermarket takeaway stores near train stations (Migros or Coop have them) may also have some affordable food.

Some restaurants might also have cheaper lunch deals, and then you can just eat some fruit or bread and cheese for dinner (Switzerland has awesome cheese). Don’t forget to indulge in chocolate while you are here too. The most common, and great, options include Lindt, Laderach, Sprungli, and the local chocolatiers in places like Geneva.

A Switzerland holiday should definitely be on any solo traveler’s bucket list. Hopefully, this guide has given you lots of tips, options, and ideas to make that possible. Just remember to head here when there sun is shining in the summer and you will go home with some experiences you will never forget!

I am headed to Switzerland in November for the first time and since we booked the flight all I can do is plan my trip. This has been the best post I have come by. Thank you so much for putting this together!

Interlaken looks like one of the most gorgeous places on earth Anna. Reminds me of my South Island trip in New Zealand.

Switzerland and New Zealand have a lot in common Ryan, although New Zealand is way less developed!

Switzerland is my favorite country to visit. I enjoyed reading your thoughts. I am not a back packer and don’t usually stay at hostels. So it was interesting to see my favorite place from different perspective.

A Solo Traveler's Guide to Switzerland

Switzerland is an easy place to navigate as a solo traveler. The sheer variety of things to see and do will ensure you’re never bored. However, it is one of the most expensive places in the world, so careful planning is essential, especially if you don’t have anyone to split bills with.

Bring a pocket translator.

Switzerland ’s 28 cantons speak four languages (French, German, Italian and Romansch) between them. While the divide between French, German and Italian speaking areas is quite distinct, it’s still useful to pack yourself a few pocket guides, particularly if you are planning on visiting more remote areas of the country. You don’t need to be a polyglot, but it helps to know the basics.

Tip : Swiss-German and ‘High German’ aren’t entirely the same. While many people in the German speaking parts of Switzerland will understand and speak ‘High German’, it’s worth learning a few phrases of Swiss-German to make sure you’re fully understood.

Think safety and don’t get caught out

Be aware of the prices

Switzerland isn’t cheap. From a simple sandwich to the price of a hostel or hotel, prices can range from expensive to exorbitantly high. Switzerland ’s ubiquitous McDonald’s chains also sell the world’s most expensive Big Mac at a whopping 12 Swiss Francs. While it is possible to travel on a budget, it’s best to do plenty of research and travel off-season when prices are not inflated.

Tip : Most places have local markets on Wednesdays and the weekend where it’s possible to pick up a cheap bite to eat.

Tip : If you’re a student don’t forget to bring along your ID as most attractions offer discounts.

Tip : Tap water in Switzerland is perfectly drinkable. Instead of splurging on endless bottles of water, buy a refillable bottle and save cash as well as the environment.

Tour around

Traveling in Switzerland is easy and relaxed, from the high-speed, and famously punctual, trains to local public transport. You can grab yourself a Swiss Travel Pass and take any mode of transport you like across the entire country. Check out the SBB website to plan your route and download the phone app for complete easy of mind. Some of Switzerland ‘s train rides also offer spectacular views of the surrounding Alps, from the Glacier Express , the world’s slowest express train, to the GoldenPass Line which takes you from Lake Geneva all the way through the country to Lake Lucerne.

Tip : When staying at a hotel or hostel in most cities a free public transport token is provided; make use of it. As with most other things in Switzerland , public transport is pricey and bus or tram tickets quickly mount up and eat into that chocolate budget.

Tip : If you don’t go for the Swiss Travel pass, make sure to book in advance. Traveling on Switzerland ’s famously punctual trains is a treat and many routes offer spectacular views of the country’s many lakes and mountains. While the trains are quick, they’re also pricey but if you book in advance there are often ‘SuperSaver’ tickets available with reductions of up to 50 percent. So when planning an itinerary it’s worth checking out whether or not it’s possible to save a few Francs.

Use it as a stop-over

Do you simply have to go to Switzerland , but are scared of the prices? Use it as a stop-over. Switzerland is well connected to Germany, Austria, France and Italy making it an easy base camp on a longer trip through Europe.

Enjoy the outdoors

Whether you’re into hiking, snowboarding, skiing or just relaxing with a nice cool beer, Switzerland has a bit of something for everyone. While it is known mostly for its snow sports, don’t count it out as a great place to visit in the summer when the temperatures match those of nearby France and Italy. There are plenty of beautiful lakes or medieval castles to explore and wonderful wines to be tasted in spring and autumn. So don’t stay cooped up in the cities, explore all that Switzerland has to offer.

Tip: If the Swiss ski resorts are out of your price range, check out those in France as many are easily reachable from Geneva.

Having spent time travelling through this country solo, I have included all my favourite accommodation, as well as recommendations from other women in our solo female community. What makes hostels or hotels in Switzerland solo female-friendly? They are clean, safe, friendly and welcoming and generally in a good location to get to.

There is a variety of accommodation in Switzerland. Whether you want to stay in an apartment, a cosy bed and breakfast or a traditional wooden Swiss chalet, there are many different options. You can choose a farm stay or stay overnight in a Benedictine Monastery.

The best area to stay in Basel Switzerland – The city of Basel is divided by the Rhine River. If you like to be near the sights and stay in the centre of town, then choosing Basel accommodation in the Old Town in Gorssbasel is one of the best areas.

There are more restaurant options on this side and you're near to Market Square, the City Hall, and also the train station. The Old Town of Kleinbasel is on the other side of the river and is also a good area to stay in. * Check rates and availability for all Basel accommodation  

Basel Youth Hostel – $

Basel Youth Hostel in Basel Switzerland has a really cool contemporary design mixed with historical features. The beds are comfortable, breakfast is included and it is in a peaceful setting near a stream. It’s also near the Alban Gate in the heart of Basel so everything is walkable.

Bern Backpackers Hotel Glocke – $

For those on a budget, consider one of the hostels in Bern Switzerland. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in the centre of the city, this Bern hostel and backpackers hotel is in a great location. The staff are really friendly and they have female-only dorms. Hotel Marthahaus – $$

Hotel-Pension offers rooms with private or shared bathrooms and is popular with solos. There is free tea and coffee and a complimentary breakfast. Max Aviation Apartments – $$

If you need somewhere quiet these apartments are perfect. They are near the tram and there is a large garden to chill out in. The beds are comfy and the rooms are super clean, plus you can enjoy a view of either the garden or mountains. Best area in Geneva to stay – The city centre is the best area to stay in as tourist attractions are within walking distance. For a bit of Italian flair stay in Carouge, described as a small Italy. Here you can eat and drink to your heart’s content and take an evening stroll around its Sardinian heritage. Geneva Hostel – $

This hostel which was once a former school building is one of the best hostels in Geneva for solo travellers. It's located in the heart of Geneva near the beach and you’ll find a restaurant serving Swiss cuisine, and a common room with a TV to mingle with the other guests. Breakfast is included and they have female-only dorm rooms too. * Check rates and availability for Geneva Hostel

City Hostel Geneva – $

Geneva City Hostel is one of the hostels in Geneva that is close to the main station. The hostel is really sociable and they offer discounts on train passes and offer daily movies. Dorm rooms are small with only 3-4 people in a room. They even have a laundry service and hair dryers for you to use. Hôtel Bel'Espérance – $$

If you prefer to be near the lakeshore for your accommodation in Geneva Switzerland, choose one of the Geneva hotels in this location. Hotel Bel'Esperance is in a perfect location and also near to the old town. They offer single rooms and studios with a wardrobe, hairdryer and TV. Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof – $

With a homely feel, Backpackers Villa Interlaken is centrally located and includes breakfast in the price. The hostel has a fully equipped kitchen so you can make your own meals and you get free access to a swimming pool. It's one of the best hostels in Interlaken for solo travellers. Balmers Hostel – $

More than just a hostel, Balmers Hostel Interlaken also offers a tent village for camping, and activities for any kind of weather (not to mention a jacuzzi to relax in). It’s known as a party hostel so after tasting the locally brewed schnapps you can party in the onsite nightclub until the early hours.

Balmers offer shared mixed, male-only or female-only dormitories (4,6,8 bedded) and also some smaller private rooms. They also have separate female showers and toilets. All rooms are key card operated so only the people that are sleeping in your room can enter it. Safety boxes and lockers are offered at the back of the hostel.

Hotel Beausite – $$

Friendly staff, beautiful views and gorgeous gardens to relax in, Hotel Beausite is one of the 3-star hotels in Interlaken. It offers clean and comfortable rooms and is only a 5-minute walk to the train station. Ula’s Holiday Apartments – $$

If you prefer your own apartments with panoramic views of the lake and mountains, Ula’s Holiday Apartments offers self-catering apartments. Situated 700 meters above Interlaken in Beatenberg, with the beauty of a Swiss Alpine village, a very friendly host and a bus stop just 5 minutes away.  * Check rates and availability for Ula's Holiday Apartments

Best area to stay in Lausanne Switzerland – If you are looking to be near the tourist sites, La Cite district is a good area to stay in, but if you prefer to hang out with the locals then you may prefer a local neighbourhood instead. * Check rates and availability for all Lausanne accommodation  

Hotel du Raisin – $$

This hotel is in a good location and close to the train station. The staff give you a travel pass for transportation when you check-in. The single room is ideal for a solo but they also offer studios that come with a kitchenette. Lauterbrunnen

Where to stay in Lauterbrunnen – In Lauterbrunnen, you’ll find camping, hostels, hotels and self-catering apartments here. Anywhere in the village is a good place to stay as it's easily walkable. * Check rates and availability for all Lauterbrunnen accommodation  

Camping Jungfrau – $$

This holiday park caters for any type of traveller whether you want to stay in a caravan, a cottage, a room or a dormitory. They have everything on site and gorgeous scenery all around. A shuttle bus runs to the train station from here. * Check rates and availability for Camping Jungfrau

Valley Hostel – $

This Lauterbrunnen Switzerland hostel is really popular with solo women. It’s in a great location close to the train station and there’s a supermarket nearby so you can save money on meals. Hotel Schützen Lauterbrunnen – $$

This typical Swiss chalet has a homely feel to it with comfy duvets, sloped ceilings and a fireplace. The hotel is family run and you can choose the half-board option or breakfast only. Best area to stay in Lucerne Switzerland – As Lucerne is a walkable city, any area in the city is a good place to stay depending on your preference. If you prefer to stay near the beach, the Richemont Hotel is just a short walk away and overlooks Lake Lucerne. All rooms have their own bathroom. Where to stay in Lugano – If you prefer to be somewhere walkable then the city centre is a good place to stay. Outside of the city you can get different views of the city and the lake and be somewhere quieter. This hostel Lugano Switzerland is an oasis just 3 km outside of Lugano. Surrounded by gorgeous vegetation where you can hike, there is a swimming pool where you can cool off during the summer months or make friends with the other guests over a game of volleyball.

Where to stay in Zermatt  – Zermatt is a great destination to choose for summer or winter. Its location at the foot of the Matterhorn makes it a stunning place to come. Zermatt Youth Hostel Switzerland

This Zermatt hostel is a 15-minute walk to the railway station and also to the ski lifts. Plus you can see the Matterhorn from here. Solo travel zurich: an independent guide to a beautiful swiss city.

If you’re planning a trip to Switzerland, you will likely add Zurich as a stop in your itinerary. Switzerland’s largest city is often included in travel plans, since the majority of people are already familiar with the city’s abundant wealth, ritzy shops, adorable Old Town, and overall high quality of life. 

Yes, without a doubt, Zurich is a strikingly beautiful city. This is the image of Zurich that immediately pops into our heads: a perfectly preserved Old Town that hugs both sides of Limmat river. Glistening church spires punch the open skies, as well-dressed people carry Rolex and Hermes shopping bags as they mindless stroll cobblestone streets.  

Ultimately, a city break in Zurich is elegant and sophisticated, but what about solo travel to Zurich? Are there any challenges if you want to visit by yourself? Is it even a good idea to go?

After all, we also know Zurich, uh, isn’t the cheapest destination on the planet. Far from it. (More on the price tag later, haha).

My Experience in Zurich

Okay, so, I actually really loved Zurich despite the city’s perceived shortcomings. Zurich is known for being rich and boring, because unless money stuffs your wallet, you need to carefully, carefully track your budget here.

I think the main reasons that I liked Zurich so much was because I had also spent plenty of time to explore Switzerland’s other regions. For instance, I wandered through small towns in Appenzell, climbed mountains in the Bernese Oberland, and sampled cheese in Gruyeres. 

Not to mention, I already knew what to expect in Zurich. I arrived at the end of my trip with one major goal: to relax in classy cafes and shop for souvenirs. 

A lot of people find Zurich “disappointing,” because to be honest, there isn’t a ton for visitors to “do” other than savor the city’s vibes.  I already knew this ahead of time. 

Why Visit Zurich Alone

Should you visit Zurich alone? Yes, but with some caveats.

Honestly, as much as I loved Zurich, you want to make sure you experience other parts of Switzerland. Solo travel in Switzerland is amazing for all types of travelers.

For example, solo travel in Lake Geneva absolutely blew my mind in the best possible way. The scenery stole my heart. If you spend an excessive amount of time in Zurich, you’ll probably run out of things to do.

To tell you the truth, I think a single day in Zurich is plenty of time to get a taste of the city. You can certainly base yourself here if you don’t want to pack and change hotels a million times, but try not to spend most of your trip in Zurich. 

At the end of the day, Zurich is a classy city that’s perfect for travelers who want to see Switzerland’s “urban side,” as well as the country’s majestic scenery in the form of well-planned day trips. 

Let’s dive into specifics. Keep in mind that if you need more help, I also provide solo travel planning services to Europe. 

Reasons to Travel Alone to Zurich

Fantastic tourist infrastructure .

You don’t have to worry about public transportation in Zurich (or anywhere in Switzerland).

In Zurich, the infrastructure is great for solo travelers, because the trains and trams eliminate any hassle and anxiety of a rental car.

Speaking from personal experience, I hate driving around alone even in my home state, and the thought of renting a car in a foreign country makes me want to go running for the hills. 

If you’re staying in Zurich for more than 24 hours, I suggest investing in the  Zurich City Card , which gives you unlimited access to Zurich’s trains, trams, and busses. 

Few Safety Concerns

You won’t need to worry about your safety as a solo traveler in Zurich.  Seriously, for a city of its size, I felt remarkably safe exploring Zurich’s streets . I am far more on “alert” at home. 

Tourists are very rarely – if ever – targets of violent crime. A solo female traveler is welcome to explore the city without attracting much attention.

However, you still want to remain aware of any personal valuables. Like other European cities, pickpocketing is still a possibility in Zurich. Don’t lose sleep over it, of course, and if you’re worrying excessively about a stolen passport or wallet, you can take additional steps to protect yourself.

For example, you might want to invest in a Pacsafe crossbody bag to enjoy an extra level of security in Zurich’s train station or crowded Old Town streets. 

As always, common sense applies in Zurich. Don’t drink a ton of alcohol and wander into a dark alley alone at three in the morning, for example.

Easy to Meet Other Travelers

Do you want to meet other people on your trip to Switzerland? If so, then I recommend going to Zurich for at least one night.

Switzerland’s high prices scare off some budget-minded backpackers. However, Zurich is such a popular city that you’re bound to have a conversation with  someone , especially if you decide to stay in a hostel (more suggestions on those later!).

Not to mention, Zurich is home to Switzerland’s largest airport. So, unsurprisingly, a ton of travelers come through this charming city either at the beginning or end of their Swiss itineraries. 

I also suggesting signing up for a Zurich walking tour or a group day trip to nearby locations. A group activity is a fantastic way to make new travel buddies! You’re all in the same boat. And even if your group has no other solo travelers, I promise someone will say “hello!” to you.

Perfect Hub for Day Trips

Zurich’s abundant train connections make it a perfect base for day trips.  Like I said, as a city, there are limited big attractions in Zurich. You ought to come to Zurich for the shops and restaurants. However, the true beauty of Switzerland can be discovered in the country’s impeccable lakes and mountains. 

Due to Zurich’s ideal location and size, the city is a fantastic base if you only have time to take a couple of day trips. 

For instance, it’s a piece of cake to visit Lucerne in one day from Zurich. Trains frequently run from both main stations with the entire journey taking 41 minutes. Actually trains go literally all over the country! You can go absolutely anywhere you want!

If you’re staying in Zurich longer than 24 hours, take advantage of those gorgeous and sleek Swiss trains, and go exploring until your heart is content.

Plenty of Shopping

Do you love to shop? Then Zurich is perfect for you. Peeeeeerfect!

As a solo traveler, you have the ability to slip inside cute boutiques and speciality shops, and take all the time in the world to browse the shelves. Personally, I love shopping alone, because I don’t have to worry about whether I’m frustrating other people, as I examine each and every object in front of me.

Of course, I recommend patronizing small businesses in Zurich rather than the large luxury stores. You can find plenty of unique stores that you won’t see anywhere else in the world. However,

Regardless of my love for small businesses, though, I still recommend that you walk on Bahnhoffstrasse. You’re in for a delightful experience. Bahnhoffstrasse is also known as the most expensive shopping street in the whole world. The window shopping is the definition of “divine” and ogling at the displays won’t cost you a single bill.

All in all, Zurich is perfect for solo travelers who want to browse unique fashions, handmade journals, designer watches, and more without compromising on their time. 

Convenient Proximity to the Airport

Like I mentioned, Zurich Airport is the largest international hub in the country. You’re able to take flights all over Europe, as well as long-haul flights to North America and Asia. 

If you’re a solo traveler, you don’t want to feel overwhelmed going to and from big airports, which is why I recommend staying in Zurich on the first or last day of your trip. 

Trains  constantly  go to Zurich Airport. Seriously, you can show up to the train station without checking schedules once, and I guarantee that a train will be heading to the airport in five minutes or so. You won’t have to fear about epic delays causing you to miss your flight. 

Solo Travel Zurich: Practical Suggestions

As you can see, solo travel to Zurich is easy and relaxing. This Swiss city is the perfect place to sit at a cafe along the water and people-watch, as well as do a bit of fancy shopping. 

I wanted to leave you with a couple of practical suggestions, so you can begin to plan your solo trip to Zurich. 

How to Get to Zurich

Transportation to Zurich is super easy to find and navigate. Switzerland’s bigger cities all have direct train lines that feed directly into Zurich’s impressive and modern main station.

Personally, I recommend the Swiss Pass for solo travelers coming to Switzerland for an extended period of time.

With the Swiss Pass, you can print a copy of your pass, and have an electronic copy stored in the “wallet” of your phone. As a Swiss Pass holder, you’re allowed to use all public transportation in Zurich and beyond for the dates printed on your pass.

If you choose to buy separate tickets, please ensure that you validate them prior to boarding any tram or train in Zurich. The Swiss don’t mess around with unvalidated tickets. You don’t want to owe a very, very, very steep fine. 

Solo Travel Packing Essentials for Zurich

You don’t want to forget these items when taking a solo trip to Zurich. Even though Zurich is a shopper’s haven, you don’t want to pay Swiss prices for super basic travel essentials. 

I recommend brining the following: 

• Comfortable Walking Shoes: I love Clarks. I think they make wonderful walking shoes for urban adventures. For example, I think these slip-on loafers are perfect for walking around Zurich’s cobblestone streets. 
• Dressy (Yet Reasonable) Accessories:  I liked looking a little dressier in Zurich! Bring pretty costume jewelry , for example, to add glitz to your outfit! 
• EU Plug Adapter:  Most hostels are installing USB plugs, but unfortunately, this isn’t guaranteed either. So be prepared. Bring a EU plug adapter so your electronic devices don’t die in Zurich. Stay charged!
• Lonely Plant Switzerland: Want to know all about the attractions, hotels, and restaurants in Zurich, as well as the surrounding areas? Then don’t forget your Lonely Planet Switzerland guidebook ! Lonely Planet makes the best guides. I own a ton of them!
• Sony Mirrorless Camera:  As always, you want to snap beautiful shots with devices that are even more incredible than your smartphone. I personally recommend the Sony a6400 mirrorless camera – which I own and love due to the great image quality and the camera’s compactness. 
• Stylish Sunglasses:  Sunglasses add a little “jazz” to any outfit! If you’re in Zurich on a bright day, you don’t want to forget a pretty pair of sunglasses to dress up your outfit. 
• Travel Insurance:  We all know Zurich is safe. However, you don’t want to forget to purchase travel insurance in case of unexpected injury or sickness. Your bank account will profusely thank you. I buy World Nomads insurance for all my trips and haven’t been disappointed yet! 

Where to Stay in Zurich

Okay, I won’t lie to you. Switzerland is expensive. Zurich is even  more  expensive. As a solo traveler, you probably don’t want to spend the money for a hotel room unless you’re really treating yourself (which, hey, no judgement here).

Luckily, due to its popularity, Zurich has a couple of reasonable hostel options that will cut down costs a bit. Are these hostels as cheap as the ones in nearby Germany or France? Erm, no, but you need to take what you can get. 

Accommodation Ideas

• Depot 195 – Hostel Winterthur:  This vibrant hostel is actually located in nearby Winterthur, but is still within proximity to the train station, which makes visiting Zurich a breeze. The hostel is inside a renovated factory and offers a unique experience to solo travelers. See prices on TripAdvisor.com and Booking.com .
• Oldtown Hostel Otter:  This backpacker hostel is located on a lovely cobblestone street in the middle of Zurich’s Old Town. A perfect choice for solo travelers who want the convenience of location! See prices on TripAdvisor.com and Booking.com .
• Zurich Youth Hostel:  This reasonably priced hostel is on a tree lined street not too far from Zürich Brunau railway station. Has a charming courtyard for meeting other visitors. See prices on TripAdvisor.com and Booking.com .
