If you are looking for a nice restaurant in the center of town with a broad Mexican menu, I recommend Restaurante Palmeras Cozumel.

10. Machete

Machete is a little hole in the wall tucked back a few blocks off of the main square. The food here is very tasty, the drinks are strong, and the staff is very friendly. I think Machete is one of the best places in Cozumel to just grab a drink and enjoy some snack foods. While Senor Frog’s is one of the most popular chain bars in Cozumel, I much prefer holes in the wall like this one.

This restaurant is slightly more upscale than many on this list, but it isn’t nearly as formal as fine dining.

15. Money Bar Beach Club

Money Bar Beach Club has been a favorite of ours for over a decade. This little beach club south of the downtown parts of Cozumel serves up delicious food with panoramic ocean views and beach access. While the food isn’t fancy in any way, the menu is pretty wide and the prices are affordable given the fact that the restaurant is located in a beach club. There are also many drink specials here, providing you the opportunity to crack open an ice-cold beer and go for a swim in the Caribbean Sea!

The Best Restaurants in the Cozumel Hotel Zone

There are a few different hotel zones in Cozumel, but the one most commonly referred to as the hotel zone is on the northern part of the island. There aren’t many great restaurants up that way outside of the hotels, but there are two that really stand out as great places to eat.

16. La Cabaña del Pescador Grill Lobster House

La Cabana del Pescador Grill Lobster House is a popular place located on the north end of the island. This lobster shack is a particularly great option for people staying on the northern end of the island, as there are not many other great restaurants up that way.

17. Buccanos

$$ | Seafood

Located in the northern part of the island, Buccanos is one of Cozumel’s many fantastic restaurants located right on the beach. 18. Maple Bakehouse Panaderia

If you are looking for the best coffee shop in Cozumel that isn’t named Starbucks, look no further. If you go to the larger Maple Bakehouse, you simply can’t pass up on the French toast.

19. El Palomar Cozumel

El Palomar serves both brunch and dinner, and the food is truly magnificent. This is one of the best restaurants on the entire island. From delicious tacos to a whole grilled octopus, the menu here is filled with incredible options that will not disappoint. El Palomar is a bit more upscale than most of the places on this list, and the atmosphere is very nice.

20. El Sazón del Camarón

El Sazon del Camaron is not exclusively a breakfast place. In fact, it is more of a brunch place than a breakfast place, and they close before dinner. El Sazon del Camaron is known for its menu of scrumptious seafood tacos, including fish, shrimp, octopus, and more. They also make their own salsas and ceviches, and you can’t go wrong with any of their cocktails, either.

21. La Candela

Many people think that La Candela serves the best Mexican breakfast in all of Cozumel, and I can’t disagree. They serve a very nice menu of Mexican breakfast favorites, and they do a great job making them. This place has a very rustic Mexican feel to it, and it is a spot that you don’t want to miss.

cozumel restaurants near cruise port

22. Ciri’s Coffee Bar

Ciri’s Coffee Bar is another cute coffee shop located on the island. Ciri’s Coffee Bar prides itself on serving high-quality Mexican coffee, and coffee lovers love their espresso beverages. While it is a bit further away from the downtown area, Ciri’s Coffee Bar is still very accessible by taxi and is a great, small place with a relaxing atmosphere.

The Best Restaurants Near the Cruise Terminal in Cozumel

Cozumel is most popularly visited as a cruise port, but many cruise guests prefer to just stick around the area by the cruise terminal. There are a handful of great restaurants right by the cruise ships, which means there’s no need to venture too far into the island. My favorites are these three:

cozumel restaurants near cruise port

23. Bar Mandy

Known for its simple, high-quality, affordable Mexican dishes, Bar Mandy is a fantastic place to go if you are looking for a great bite to eat just a few steps away from your cruise ship. This restaurant is not fancy by any means, but it offers up good food just a few minutes away from where all of the cruise ships dock. Bar Mandy offers a very relaxed atmosphere along with traditional Mexican dishes, like huevos rancheros.

24. Ix Kool

$$$$ | Mexican

Ix Kool is one of the best Yucatecan restaurants on the entire island. If you read my Merida travel guide , you know that Yucatecan food is some of the best food in all of Mexico! The cochinita pibil here is to die for, and it is something you simply must try if you’ve never had it before. Being within walking distance of the cruise terminal makes this place a popular restaurant for cruise guests, too!

cozumel restaurants near cruise port

25. Paprika Mexican & Caribbean Kitchen

$$ | Mexican & Caribbean

Paprika Mexican & Caribbean Kitchen is a fan-favorite restaurant recognized for its delicious Mexican food served at very affordable prices. Guests tend to love the coconut ice cream, and many people find themselves stopping in for dinner and coming back the next day for breakfast, or the other way around!

If you want a delicious, affordable spot not too far from the cruise port, Paprika Mexican & Caribbean Kitchen is a great spot to check out.

The Best Tacos in Cozumel

While most Mexican restaurants serve tacos, that doesn’t necessarily make them taco joints. A true taco joint is much more of an open kitchen concept, with everything prepared right in front of you. Some places in Cozumel specialize in whipping up some delicious tacos, and we’ve listed the best ones here.

cozumel restaurants near cruise port

26. Mister Taco

Mister Taco is known for serving up some of the best tacos in Cozumel, and you will be stunned by their great prices. The tacos here are authentic, and they are in a great location within walking distance of the main square. Be sure to check their hours in advance, as they tend to be a dinner-only place.

27. Taqueria El Camarón Dorado

El Camaron Dorado, or the Golden Shrimp in Spanish, is a little taco joint a mile outside of the main town of Cozumel that serves up delicious seafood tacos. Most people who eat here wind up raving about the tacos, saying that El Camaron Dorado serves the best tacos on the whole island. While that is surely up for debate, there is no denying that they are outstanding!

cozumel restaurants near cruise port

28. Taqueria El Poblano

Located just up the road from El Camaron Dorado is Taqueria El Poblano, which is another one of the island’s best taco restaurants. This place is more famous for its tacos al pastor, which are tacos made with specially marinated pork and often served with pineapple. This recipe comes from the state of Puebla, which is what gives this restaurant its name.

29. Guisados

Guisados serves the best tacos in the town of Cozumel, in my opinion. This little restaurant has a long menu, but I highly recommend trying its mole tacos. Mole is a Mexican food made of different seeds, nuts, and spices, and Guisados mole tacos are both unique and delicious.

The Best Dessert Place in Cozumel

30. Kike’s Artisanal Ice Cream

If you have a sweet tooth, Kike’s Artisanal Ice Cream is a place you absolutely need to check out. This spot is famous for its homemade ice cream, and it just hits differently on a hot day in the Caribbean. While many of the restaurants on this list serve great desserts, there is no better standalone dessert spot in Cozumel than Kike’s Artisanal Ice Cream.

Thank you for reading our post about the best restaurants in Cozumel! Hopefully, this post didn’t make your mouth start watering too much. These are just some of the best lunch restaurants within walking distance of your Cozumel cruise ship port , whether you’re docking at the Punta Langosta pier in downtown San Miguel, or the Puerta Maya Terminal or the International Pier just south of town.

Worth the walk, and the quality of the food will make it well worth the price…all with a fun atmosphere and a great local experience.

Check out these cafes and restaurants in Cozumel to go and grab something to eat near the cruise port.

If you need more info on the three Cozumel cruise ship piers and a full introduction to what amenities you’ll find within walking distance, check out this post next !

Grab Lunch Near to Cozumel’s Three Cruise Terminals

First off, if you’ve never cruised to Cozumel before, you may not know that there are three cruise ship terminals , where your cruise ship might dock.

If you’re primarily looking to do some port shopping when you arrive – whether it’s souvenir shopping or picking up something you forgot or ran out of – read this related article about shopping within walking distance of the three Cozumel cruise piers for more information.

But if you’d like to find a nice place for lunch without worrying about finding a taxi cab in Cozumel , or venturing too far from your ship, this post is for you.  Read on.

The Three Cozumel Cruise Ports and Cruise Lines Each Serves:

  • Punta Langosta – located right in downtown San Miguel de Cozumel, and typically serving the cruise lines of Disney, MSC, and Norwegian
  • International Pier – located about 2 miles south of downtown Cozumel, and typically serving the cruise lines of Celebrity and Royal Caribbean
  • Puerta Maya Cruise Terminal – located about 2.2 miles south of downtown Cozumel, serving the Carnival cruise lines

No matter which pier your ship docks at, you’ll find some excellent food options, namely for authentic Mexican food – think fresh tacos, sizzling fajitas, creamy guacamole, refreshing ceviche, Caribbean lobster, coconut shrimp, and much more.

And all within a nice short walk of your Cozumel cruise ship.

Don’t forget to quench at one of our favorite local cervecerías (beer bar in Mexico), or with a crisp real cane sugar Coca-Cola that Mexico is famous for, or a fresh lime juice margarita at your choice of Cozumel’s best bars .

And then save some room, and try one of the great local Cozumel ice cream shops to beat the heat.

Great Lunch Restaurants in Walking Distance to Cozumel’s Punta Langosta Cruise Ship Terminal

If your Cozumel cruise ports at Punta Langosta, you’re in luck.

Located in the heart of downtown San Miguel de Cozumel , Punta Langosta cruisers have the most and best restaurants near the cruise pier, and countless choices for food and drinks within walking distance.

But we have to narrow it down, somehow!

Top picks for lunch near Punta Langosta Pier , try these:

Punta Sur Cerveceria – Pizza and Beer in a Cool Local Joint

Punta Sur is a relative newcomer, but it was instantly popular due to its home-brewed beers and delicious wood-oven pizzas.

In fact, Punta Sur is the only on-site microbrewery on the island, and they serve up great flights of their different brews, as well as pints and growlers.

And their pizza? Crispy, tasty, and delicious. One of the absolute best pizzas in Cozumel .

They have pies like the Mexican (avocado, chorizo and jalapeño), the Spanish (Iberico ham), and a new special with chapaulines (grasshopper. try it. it’s good!).

But their most famous pizza is the one that comes with lionfish.

If you’re a scuba diver in this part of the world , you’ll know that lionfish are a beautiful species of fish…that belongs in the Pacific Ocean.

Here? It’s a harmful invasive species with no local predators and is doing great damage to local marine life from Florida on down through the Caribbean.

If you want to do something eco-friendly for the island environment , and/or you want to try a unique and still delicious pizza combo, order the pizza with “ Pez Leon “, and enjoy.

Le Chef and the Famous Lobster Sandwich

Le Chef is among the most popular Cozumel restaurants with excellent food, that got island-famous back around 2015 for its amazingly delicious lobster club sandwich.

I’m from New England, and a big Atlantic lobster lover, so I was a skeptic…until I tried it.

Delicious Caribbean lobster meat blends with bacon and cheese, all on a marbled-rye-toast triple-decker. It’s kind of amazing.

Le Chef also has nice fresh salads, pasta, and pizza, as well as beer, wine, drinks, and an incredible waterfront location with an ocean view.

Location on Google Maps : Av. Melgar at Calle 4 North

Pancho’s Backyard for Classic Cozumel

For old-school Cozumel charm, try the lunch dining experience at the original location of Pancho’s Backyard, about a 10 minute walk along the waterfront, from Punta Langosta.

Situated within one of our most recommended silver jewelry shopping experiences in Cozumel , the flagship Cinco Soles store, Pancho’s Backyard has long been considered one of the best restaurants serving up both traditional Yucatan cuisine and some local history and charm.

It’s one of the local Mexican cuisine restaurants that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time – but just enough.

Try the special of the day, or any one of their authentic regional dishes .

Save room for dessert, and hit up one of our favorite local ice cream shops to round out the day in port.

Location on Google Maps : Av. Melgar (main drag along the waterfront) between Calles 8 and 10 North

Coctelito’s on Cozumel’s Waterfront

Another local hot-spot, especially on Sundays for family brunches and a great place to catch the futbol world cup, Coctelito’s is also right on the waterfront, so the location is a delight.

A huge menu of Mexican favorites like tacos , coconut shrimp, ceviches, and Micheladas is just the start here.

Plenty of room, and even a small play area for restless kids , Coctelito’s is a nice dining experience, but also a fun place where you can really take a load off and relax for a good long while, over a few nice cold drinks.

Location on Google Maps :  Av. Melgar at Calle 10 North

Aqui y Ahora is a new Must-Try Spot in Coz

Aqui y Ahora is among our short list of best coffee shops in town , but this place goes far beyond coffee.

Housed in a huge three-story space, Aqui y Ahora is more of a day-to-night hangout, full of creative food choices, local art on the wall, and an upstairs bar and lounge space complete with lounge areas, foozball, and pool.

Not to mention its amazing waterfront view from the top floor.  Perfect for a sunset happy hour.

Great for a date night for couples , an early coffee and pastry, a few hours of remote working with other digital nomads , and almost everything in between.

Location on Google Maps : Av. Melgar between Calles 2 and 4, one block north of the Cozumel ferry pier and right across the street from the Coral Reef Memorial sculpture.

Great Tacos in Cozumel Near Punta Langosta Pier

Colores y sabores.

Colores y Sabores is my reigning champ for Baja-style fish tacos in Cozumel, but this charming little home-cooking cafe also has delicious chiles rellenos, seafood and steak dishes, traditional tacos and burritos , and a good selection of regional specialties made with fresh ingredients.

In my opinion, Colores y Sabores is one of the best restaurants in Cozumel near Punta Langosta, and one of my favorite places to eat great homemade local food.

Only about 3 short blocks from Punta Langosta, this place is a no-brainer, and WAY more authentic and satisfying than anything you’ll see right at the cruise terminal mall as you’re disembarking.

Location on Google Maps : Calle 5, between Melgar and Av. 5 Sur (just west of the International Hospital, one of Cozumel’s best hospitals )

Author's image of Cuatro Tacos in downtown Cozumel. Pink facade with tables on the sidewalk, out front.

Cuatro Taco – Try all the Salsas

A few more blocks northward, and you’ll find Cuatro Taco on a friendly side street.

Reopened after a long rest during the pandemic, Cuatro Taco is a fun sidewalk stand/cafe with a few unique choices including my favorite: the chile relleno taco. Yum.

Cuatro Taco also has a few homemade hot sauces and salsas to try, and they really elevate whatever you’re eating.

Location: Calle 3, just off of Av. Rafael Melgar (the waterfront main drag)

El Foco for Traditional Tacos and Coz History

El Foco is a Cozumel institution and the first “real” taco place I myself went to on the island, way back when…

After moving a few times, El Foco now seems perfectly situated in a nice large restaurant space just a couple blocks from the waterfront, and just 3-4 blocks away from Punta Langosta.

If you’re docking at Punta Langosta on your Cozumel Cruise, this would be a great choice for some awesome tacos, in a comfortable sit-down environment.

Location on Google Maps : Av. 5 Sur between Calles 5 y 7

Author's image of the front facade of the El Foco restaurant, that shows an arched doorway and large menu signs near the entrance.

Great Lunch Restaurants in Walking Distance to Cozumel’s Southern Cruise Terminals

As noted above, the two cruise pier terminals in Cozumel’s southern hotel zone are the International Pier and the Puerta Maya Pier.

When you arrive and disembark at either of these cruise ports in Cozumel, you’ll be within walking distance to the same things, so I’m combining them, below.

Top picks for lunch near the Southern cruise piers in Cozumel , try these:

Lunch Near Cozumel’s International Pier and Puerta Maya Pier

Ernesto’s famous for cozumel fajitas with an ocean view.

Walk a few blocks north from either the International Pier or the Puerta Maya Cruise Pier and you’ll find Ernesto’s, right on the water.

Ernesto’s is a long-time Cozumel favorite for their famous fajitas.

Add in the terrific waterfront location and balcony dining area, and this casual lunch spot becomes a whole experience – without the stress.

Location on Google Maps : Just barely north of the Park Royal resort entrance, on the waterfront side.

Del Mar Latino Beach club, image shows view of the pool and bar, with a cruise ship in the background.

Del Mar Latino Beach Club in Cozumel

Coconut shrimp is just one of the dishes people rave about from the kitchen at the Del Mar Latino beach club.

Associated with the Casa del Mar Dive Resort & Hotel right across the street (one of our picks for great dive hotels on the island ), the Del Mar Latino Beach Club is along the waterfront, and has a nice pool, a hot tub, loungers in the sun and the shade, and a huge bar that sometimes serves as a performance stage for a range of live music artists.

Get your salsa on, take a dip, go in the ocean for some easy and safe snorkeling , and eat a great lunch – all just about a quarter of a mile up from the two southern cruise terminals in Cozumel.

Location on Google Maps :  Melgar Ave. in the beginning of the southern hotel zone – right across the street from Casa del Mar and the Park Royal Resort.

Casa del Mar Dive Hotel and Resort

If the Del Mar Latino is crowded, head directly across the street for some lunch at fully shaded Casa del Mar hotel restaurant.

Situated under a huge palapa, the bar and dining room at Casa del Mar is a welcoming space with a full bar and menu with selections like taquitos, fresh shrimp cocktail, whole fried fish, and several options of salads, sandwiches, and more.

Location on Google Maps

Hard Rock Cafe in Cozumel

Cozumel does have a Hard Rock Cafe, so if you want that classic 80s t-shirt vibe, head out of the International Pier and look right across the street – you can’t miss Hard Rock Cozumel.

Location on Google Maps : Melgar Ave. 3.5 km, in the Plaza Royal Village Shopping Center, just across the street from the International Cruise Pier terminal.

Tikila Beach Bar – Shore Diving and Good Grub

Tikila Beach Bar is a fun and funky place a few hundred feet up the road beyond the Del Mar Latino Beach Club, and is another great waterfront spot for lunch in Cozumel near the southern cruise piers.

Tikila has a patio where you can eat and drink in the warm sun, with a great view of the ocean and great people-watching of the many activities going on right in front of this area of the waterfront – shore diving , snorkeling, and a variety of boat traffic.

Try their fresh fish tacos and an ice-cold beer , and you’ll forget about the cruise ship schedule for a while.

Location on Google Maps : Melgar Ave., about 1/2 mile north of the International and Puerta Maya cruise terminals

Cool Tacos in Cozumel Near the International Cruise Pier

Tikila also has tacos.

Tikila Beach Bar (above) has full entrees but is also a great place to have a plate of tacos and a few drinks.

And maybe a dip in the ocean or even a Discover Scuba class, while you’re at it.

After all, Cozumel is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world .

Paprika Restaurant in Cozumel

Right across the street from Tikila is their sister spot, Paprika Restaurant.

This cafe has great coffee, delicious drinks, and does a good breakfast and lunch business for tourists and local business owners, alike.

If you’d rather avoid the hot sun for a while, and pay more attention to your friends – or maybe get lost in your book for a while – Paprika might be a little more quiet and peaceful than Tikila, but just as delicious.

Location on Google Maps : Melgar Ave. about 1/2 mile north of International Pier, and 1.5 miles south of Punta Langosta

cozumel restaurants near cruise port

Sunset Bar is a Great Cozumel Lunch Pick

Walk up beyond these spots for another few hundred yards and you’ll find the Sunset Bar and Grill, right on the water near the Cozumel Coast Guard station.

Sunset bar makes our list of great remote working places due to its good WiFi and its lovely waterfront location.

Who says because you’re sending emails and putting together a content schedule you have to do it indoors?

But mostly it’s just a favorite watering hole for many divers looking for a late lunch after diving, and/or a great waterfront bar for the daily Cozumel sunset .

Sunset Bar and Grill is fun and would be my personal overall pick within walking distance to Puerta Maya or International Cruise Terminal.

Location on Google Maps : Melgar Ave. near the Coast Guard station

A Great Taco Truck Right Near the Southern Cruise Ports in Cozumel

Cozumel’s own: the blue taco truck.

If you’re really truly into finding some authentic tacos in Cozumel, an even closer hot spot is a well-known taco truck very close to the International Pier and the Puerta Maya Pier in Cozumel: The Blue Taco Truck

As you leave either of those cruise terminals, look for a large intersection with a full stoplight (the only one in that stretch).

This will be just north of the 7-11 Convenience Store and a Pemex gas station, and just south of the Plaza Royal Village Shopping Center.

That road that heads east toward the Cozumel Planetarium (check that out too, especially if you’re looking for fun Cozumel activities with kids ) is called Avenida Claudio Canto.

Walk up that side street for just a few hundred feet and you’ll see a Blue Taco Truck.

And you’ll also see a bunch of local people ordering up small plates of tacos and  tortas (sandwiches), and dousing them with homemade salsas and toppings.

Don’t think to hard, just order whatever looks good or whatever meat choice ( pollo = chicken, res = beef, poc chuc = pork chop, frijoles = beans, muy picante = very spicy) and enjoy!

There’s no website for the Blue Taco Truck in Cozumel, but it does have its own Google Maps location – including loads of glowing reviews !)

Location on Google Maps (yes, it’s so well-liked, it has its own Google location. It must be worth the steps!)

Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant – Convenient for Cruisers in Cozumel

If you just want to experience a change of scenery without walking too far, but still have yummy local Mexican food in Cozumel, Mi Pueblito Mexican Restaurant is the closest and most convenient of the restaurants near cruise terminals in the southern end of Cozumel:  Puerta Maya and International Pier.

Mi Pueblito cafe has a full menu of regional Mexican favorites , great reviews, and can even take to-go orders (just order them “ para llevar “) if you want to pack a lunch for your Cozumel excursion.

It’s also a great spot to meet up with your party before returning to your ship, too – and if your timing is right, you’ll hear the familiar strains of the haunting flute associated with the Voladores “high flyers” show right there in the Mayan Plaza.

This is a traditional pre-Colombian Mexican performance you’ll want to see, especially if you have any children in your group .

Location on Google Maps :  At the only big intersection with a traffic light, just a block or two North of Puerta Maya, and a few hundred feet south of International Cruise Terminal – corner of Melgar and Av. Claudio Canto

Cozumel Taco Ordering Cheat Sheet:

  • pollo = chicken
  • poc chuc = pork chop
  • frijoles = beans
  • muy picante = very spicy
  • “gringo” = with cheese and/or on a wheat tortilla

Best Restaurants near the Cruise Port in Cancún

Kristin Busse

LAST UPDATED BY Kristin Busse August 25, 2015

The beautiful tropical island of Cozumel, located south of Cancun off the coast of Playa del Carmen, is paradise on earth. Known primarily for providing some of the best scuba diving on earth, the island also boasts heavenly white sand beaches, eco-parks, ancient Mayan history and the welcoming warmth that only Mexico can offer.

Cozumel is a major cruise port, between 20 and 30 Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney, Celebrity, and other ships arrive weekly during high season. That's a lot of hungry cruisers that want to taste the best that Cozumel has to offer, and they're in luck, because there are many unique restaurants within walking distance of or just a short taxi ride from  Punta Langosta pier.

If you're looking for Mexican food with a modern touch head to Kondesa or Kinta. These sister restaurants are two island favorites. Buccanos at Night serves up unbelievable dishes and a fabulous view. For authentic Mexican grub, you'll feel right at home at La Casita de Indio, where Indio himself will greet you. For yummy grub and a party atmosphere, try Wet Wendy's, sister restaurant The Thirsty Cougar or La Hach. For international fare, like Italian or Argentinian, give charming Guido's or delectable Del Sur Argentina a try.  For dessert, don't miss Chocolateria Isla Bella, which is run by a a talented mother and her daughter. You'll be surprised to find how delicious and unique the food is at these Cozumel restaurants.

La Hach

This ocean view restaurant is located above a dive shop, which makes for a great view of the Caribbean and a lovely breeze at all hours, and is within walking distance of the southern (International) cruise port. La Hach means "one for the road" or "the last one" in Mayan, which is fitting; this is probably where you'll have your last drink of the night because you won't want to leave. The bar/restaurant is popular with locals and features a live rock band Thursday through Saturday and the party lasts well into the early morning hours. Try the "Nacho Macho" but only if you have few friends to share it with.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : La Hach is the place to go for live rock on the island and they're open until 4am.

Kristin's expert tip : La Hach provides free WIFI.

Read more about La Hach →

The Thirsty Cougar Seaside Boozery and Kitchen

The Thirsty Cougar Seaside Boozery and Kitchen

The Thirsty Cougar is owned by the proprietors of Wet Wendy's. This version is smaller and has a killer view of the Caribbean. You'll find all of Wendy's delicious margaritas here as well. Visit with the entire family because this place is totally kid friendly. Order a virgin margarita for the little ones. The cheese fries and buritto with mango sauce are standouts. You'll find great conversation and people watching at the Thirsty Cougar and by the time you leave you'll know everyone who works there by name. The Thirsty Cougar offers free WIFI so bring your laptop or smartphone.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : The Thirsty Cougar is a place where you'll meet new friends that feel like old friends.

Kristin's expert tip : At the end of your meal ask for some "Mexican water".

Kinta

Like big sister Cozumel restaurant Kondesa, this is Mexican nouvelle cuisine at its best. Dine in Kinta's lush garden on fresh, flavorful food at a super price. Kinta offers an extensive selection of margaritas. Start off with the Wahoo tostadas and then a fresh fish (probably caught that same day) dish. The chocolate bread pudding is a must for dessert. Pachita, the resident black cat, just adds more charm and character to this delectable experience. Kinta is closed Mondays and it's located close to the town square on 5ta Avenida (5th Avenue). There's plenty of parking in the lot across the street.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : Kinta's ambiance is charming and relaxed and the cusine is creative without being pretentious.

Kristin's expert tip : Bring insect repellent if you plan to sit in the garden.

Chocolateria Isla Bella

Chocolateria Isla Bella

The Mayans served chocolate drinks during important religious events and offered cacao seeds to their gods. Considering the fact that Cozumel was an important island in Mayan Yucatecan life, it's only fitting that the island be home to a supurb chocolate shop. This charming store is run by a mother and daughter team. They make and sell all kinds of chocolate creations, including many different types of truffles like Triple Chocolate, Coconut Lime, Sea Salt Butterscotch and White Chocolate Coffee. Their motto is "Make people happy one piece of chocolate at a time". Look for the "chocolate of the day" on the Chocolateria's Facebook page.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : Chocolateria Isla Bella sells scrumptious homemade chocolate, and you get to meet the mother/daughter team behind the creations.

Kristin's expert tip : Don't forget to buy extra chocolate to take home with you.

Read more about Chocolateria Isla Bella →

La Casita de Indio

La Casita de Indio

If you're looking for authentic "off-the-beaten-path" Mexican food, look no further. La Casita de Indio (Indio's little house), a family owned restaurant which is popular with both locals and expats and is located just two blocks from the waterfront, provides a casual, fun atmosphere and superb service. You'll be treated like one of Indio's family, as he considers customers simply friends who are coming to his home for a meal. On the menu you'll find fresh authentic tacos, ceviche, tamales, lobster, steak, shrimp and more. The economical breakfast burritos are out of this world. Great people watching completes the experience.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : La Casita de Indio feels like your Mexican cousin's house, and your cousin is a great cook.

Kristin's expert tip : Order a plate for two which includes lobster, shrimp, steak and all the trimmings for about 25 USD.

Del Sur Argentina Empanadas & Grill

Del Sur Argentina Empanadas & Grill

Del Sur, a Cozumel favorite, is a taste of Argentina in Mexico that is frequented by both locals and tourists. The owners are gracious and humble and the staff, happy. The ample selection of empanadas (baked or fried stuffed pastries) are light and crispy and the meats, perfectly prepared. Try a bottle of Argentinian malbac with your meal. Expect attentive service, reasonable prices and a delightful ambiance. The restaurant is located just two blocks of the main plaza downtown. Even if you don't dine here, stop by and pick up some of the dessert empanadas to go. Each empanada runs between only 1 and 2 USDs.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : Del Sur's empanadas are delicious and economical. The simple decor is very charming.

Kristin's expert tip : For dessert try the flan, you won't regret it.

Wet Wendy's Margarita House and Restaurant

Wet Wendy's Margarita House and Restaurant

Wet Wendy's "invented the drink that keeps on drinking". They must be referring to their extensive margarita menu which includes shaken or frozen Strawberry , Mango, Banana, Peach, Pear, Pineapple, Coconut Peanut Butter Chocolate, Avocado, Cucumber-Jalapeno or Pink Panther. They also offer an extensive menu which includes Mexican and "Texican" food, seafood, vegetarian options, a kids menu, burgers, salads, breakfast and some great signature dishes. Guido's

You'll experience a taste of Europe, Swiss-Italian to be exact, just three blocks from the ferry dock and overlooking the Caribbean Sea on Rafael Melgar Avenue,in Guido's dreamy garden. Chef Yvonne 's (she is also the owner) father Guido was the original owner. Order pizza baked in a wood-fired oven, delectable lasagna or one of the daily specials accompanied by Guido's famous pitcher of Sangria, then finish off your meal with a homemade dessert and coffee. There's also the option of creating your own pasta and sauce dish. Guido's has an extensive bar and wine list and is also a boutique hotel.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : Guido's is a Cozumel institution, they simply serve good food in a delightful atmosphere.

Kristin's expert tip : The courtyard is the best place to dine but the indoor dining area is air-conditioned.

Read more about Guido's →

Kondesa

This cozy, romantic open-air garden restaurant is arguably one of the best restaurants on the island of Cozumel. Fresh flavorful Mexican and Yucatecan dishes are prepared with a modern twist and a lovely presentation. Prices are reasonable and the service is impeccable. The restaurant is only open for dinner. Don't miss "the three guacamoles" (One has strawberries in it, who knew?) and the queso fundido and try the churros for dessert. Bring insect repellent because the mosquitos can get a little feisty. Kondesa is perfect for a romantic evening. This very well may be the best meal of your vacation.

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : Kondesa is one of the best restaurants on Cozumel and the service is unbeatable.

Kristin's expert tip : Kondesa is a good walk from downtown, so you might want to grab a taxi.

Dine by torch and candlelight while admiring a view of both the Caribbean Sea and the mainland skyline and try seafood and fresh fish, which quite often was caught by the owner himself, prepared with seasonal quality ingredients. One example of a dish you might encounter; nut crusted jumbo shrimp served on compressed avocado with habanero dipping sauce and soya onion relish garnish. Wow. Try the Tamarindo Rum Punch and then "Sexiness by Chocolate" (for two) for dessert. Buccanos is only open on Friday and Saturdays from 6 pm until 11pm. Buccanos at Night closes during low season (September-November).

Recommended for Restaurants near Cruise Port because : Buccanos has it all, delicious food, good service and a killer view.

Kristin's expert tip : Buccanos at Night is now open from Wednesday thru Sunday.

Playa del Carmen on your own

Around 11 miles off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula and right across Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is the largest island in Mexico and the most popular cruise ship port in the Caribbean. In fact, with over 3 million cruise ship passengers docking in Cozumel every year, it is one of the most visited ports in the World . On the height of the season (between November and April) as many as 8 cruise ships dock almost every day in 3 very well developed and equipped terminals.

Where cruise ships dock in Cozumel

Cruise ships dock in Cozumel in one of 3 piers-terminals. The Punta Langosta Pier is located at the southern end of San Miguel, the major town on the Island, at walking distance to the best shops, restaurants, and a few landmarks like the Benito Juarez Park or the Cozumel Island Museum.

Around 3 miles south of San Miguel, are the other two cruise terminals - the International Cruise Terminal aka as TMM and Puerta Maya cruise terminal - just a few hundred years apart.

Top things to do in Cozumel port

There are good reasons why Cozumel is such a popular cruise port. To start with, the tropical weather is just fabulous and very reliable with 80°F (27° C) average annual temperature. But its main attraction is the unmatched clarity of the ocean waters that surround the island.

Photo of Diving Site in Cozumel

Diving Site - Cozumel

Since Jean-Jacques Cousteau 'discovered' Cozumel's spectacular scuba sites, when he first landed here in 1961, all sorts of water-sports and scuba , in particular, are offered by a plethora of local small business. For those that are not attracted by the wonders of ocean depths, snorkeling, fishing or just sea splashing in stunning beaches are minutes away from the cruise port. Naturally, most of these beaches have bars, restaurants, and activities that range from the most simple paddle boards to para-sailing or jet skiing.

Tulum Mayan Site - Cozumel

Tulum , a major Mayan historical site, is inland but close enough to explore when cruising (1.5-hour on a ship excursion or 2 hours on your own) and a must see for those interested in archeology. Tulum is around 30-minute drive from Playa del Carmen and you will need to get on a ferry to this beautiful town inland (another 45 minutes) - count with at least 6 hours if you wish to do it on your own.

In the island itself, a half-hour from the pier, San Gervasio is a much smaller Mayan ruin site where Ix Chel , the goddess of the moon, childbirth, and fertility was worshiped in pre-Columbian times.

Very few cruise lines offer tours to Chichén Itzá - one of the most spectacular Mayan archaeological sites - for the simple reason that a tour from Cozumel and back will take at least 10 hours. If Chichén Itzá is on your bucket list, make sure you look for a cruise line that offers this tour.

Cruise and shore excursions

All cruise lines (and private operators) offer shore excursions and tours in Cozumel. Celebrity Cruises and Royal Caribbean offer as many 85 shore excursions . Carnival lists 58 shore excursions . Oceania Cruises organizes 25 shore excursions , Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers 42 excursions and Princess has 48 excursions available.

  • Venture Ashore
  • Shore Trips
  • Tours by Locals

Besides the archaeological tours and shore excursions, many activities, which can also be enjoyed on your own . However, be aware that some activities like the Dolphin Discovery , which do not allow walk-in cruise passengers and if you try to book online the website will redirect to your cruise line. But many other activities can easily be enjoyed on your own .

Atlantis submarine

The Atlantis Submarine is a great experience for those that are not scuba divers and do not enjoy or can snorkel but want to discover the wonderful underwater world of Cozumel with its rich marine life. It also offers a combo with a drive around the island on a Buggy, Buffet Lunch and Drinks. Good to know: Book in Advance | Tour Time - 2 hours | Prices : $105 (adult) | $65 (Child). Obviously, there are also many more beaches that are free such as Palancar Beach, San Martin, Playa Bonita, Punta Morena or San Francisco, where the cruise traveler will find beach grills and bars to enjoy a quick bite or drinks. However, the quality and huge choice of Day-Passes is a delight for those looking for a serviced beach, resort or park.

Travel around on your own

Renting a scooter, an ATV or a Jeep is easy, a great way to travel around and discover the island on your own, in particular, if the cruise travel wishes to combine sites that are not offered by tour operators or the cruise ship shorex. Just be aware that roads on the east side of the island may be a bit rough and riding a scooter requires extra attention.

Snorkel and scuba diving

All cruise lines offer scuba diving and snorkel as part of their shore excursions. But a dive can be also organized with many of the small PADI certified diving clubs close to any of the cruise piers. It is advisable to book online in advance.

If your cruise ship docks in Punta Langosta, the town of San Miguel is right across the street from the pier. When docking at the International Pier aka TMM or Puerta Maya, the cruise traveler will have to get a taxi to San Miguel ($8 per person each way up to 4 passengers). In town, there are a few interesting landmarks. The main promenade along the ocean is known as Av. Rafael E. Melgar and is lined with shops all the way to the Forum shopping mall (over 1 mile from Punta Langosta).

Photo of Shops in Cozumel

San Miguel Main Square - Cozumel

Half away along this promenade, the Benito Juarez Park is a large square with a few nice restaurants, a mall with souvenirs and crafts (Plaza del Sol), the Synagogue and close by the small church of San Miguel. The Cozumel Island Museum ($4 per person and children under 8 enter free) is just a couple of blocks north of the square. Besides the exhibits, the museum's restaurant is nice and has a great view.

Shops and best shopping

Photo of Shops in Cozumel

San Miguel Shopping - Cozumel

As Cozumel became a popular cruise destination, many other attractions (besides its natural beauty) have developed. The number and quality of shops expanded like in many other islands in the Caribbean and San Miguel is now a shopping paradise . Every single duty-free shop you will find in the Caribbean has at least one store in San Miguel (Diamonds International, Del Sol, Cariloha and so on) but the cruise traveler will also find many others like Pana or Cinco Soles that only exist in Cozumel. If you are a cigar aficionado, Cozumel has some of the best and most affordable cigars in the Caribbean .

Local cuisine, quick bites and restaurants

Flavors: Whatever your plans for a day in Cozumel, do not miss the opportunity to taste real Mexican cuisine or even from other culinary traditions. A good number of restaurants offer different international cuisines for all types of budgets, including Italian and even kosher. Guacamole, tacos, fajitas can be found pretty much all over town and some of the settings are just as delicious as the food.

La Mission is one the Editor's favorites when in the mood for a Mexican treat with a popular flair. The rooms are vast, the service is slow, the music can be a bit too loud but the cuisine is genuine and the ambiance unbeatable.

Photo of Restaurant Panchos Backyard in San Miguel Cozumel.

Panchos Backyard is a more upscale type of restaurant - it also has another venue at Puerta Maya's Pier/Terminal. The cuisine is fabulous and the service tends to be good if the restaurant is not to full. More expensive than many other restaurants in Cozumel, it is worth every cent. Panchos Backyard Website

For the savvy cruiser that has visited Cozumel before and explored the main attractions, Playa del Carmen is a great alternative and easy to get to on a ferry (departures every hour, costing around US $10 each way). The ferry terminal is at walking distance from the Punta Langosta Terminal and a short taxi ride from the other 2 terminals (around $8 each way). Ferries run every hour and the crossing takes around 45 minutes. The Ferry Terminal is right by the Main Square in San Miguel. The terminal in Playa del Carmen is very centrally located and within walking to all main attractions. Check here for Ferry Schedules.

A Travel Guide to the Costa Maya Cruise Port

Costa Maya is one of Mexico’s most popular ports, located near the southern border of the Mexican state Quintana Roo. The name of the western Caribbean port means the Mayan coast, which is quite fitting (and literal) since it is a port located there. This port is mostly rivaled by the Cozumel port, which has more excursions .

Nonetheless, this port overlooks the stunning turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea and has made a name for itself. The area surrounding the port is tailored to cruise passengers, so tourists often appreciate the offerings of the area. The small town near the port is called Mahahual and has everything cruisers may need . This town is a tourist hot spot with some of the best shopping. While Costa Maya’s cruise port is not very central to other popular Mexican cities, it has its own unique offerings. Learn more about this port and its best offerings to travelers.

Is the Costa Maya Cruise Port Popular?

The Costa Maya cruise port is not as popular as some other modernly developed ports. The area has a lower population, so travelers will notice that it is not a very bustling port. However, the port is actually quite popular for its unique shape and style. The T-shaped pier offers travelers a long cruise terminal, which is meant to accommodate traffic flow. The cruise port is the gateway to Mahahual, which has fantastic Mayan attractions, comfortable amenities and delicious food.

The port is also known for its clean environment, but it is important to note that the beach is not immediately accessible from the port area. It has a welcoming and warm charm which can even be experienced through the locals. The locals of the Costa Maya cruise port area (Mahahual) are very friendly and speak English well. This means that travelers may find it easier to get around without a language barrier.

What Cruise Lines Dock There?

Carnival, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Princess, Norwegian, Virgin, MSC, Holland America, Costa and Aida cruise lines all dock at Costa Maya. Due to the port’s shape, it can not handle a high number of cruise ships at one time. In fact, it can handle at most four ships at once. Depending on the docking schedule, this maximum capacity may be unpleasant for travelers. Since the surrounding area is not exceedingly large and the port is quite slender, there can be crowds. If travelers are excited to leisurely explore this cruise port after departing from their ship , it may be worthwhile to research the port schedule.

This predetermined schedule can help travelers gauge how busy the port area will be. Costa Maya’s port schedule seems to consider its slender pier by scheduling only two ships at one specific time. This helps to alleviate some of the potentially frantic energy that may occur when several large cruise ships are unloading their passengers. Some travelers may choose to opt out of particular cruises if their established itinerary says they dock on days where the port will be overwhelmed with ships (and therefore, cruisers). Port days and staggered arrivals are important factors that help this small cruise port juggle large crowds.

Things To Do Near the Costa Maya Cruise Port

Travelers have plenty to do around the port and in Mahahual. In the cruise terminal travelers will find plenty of amenities. These include a tour informational desk, restrooms and ATM’s. Some of the fun things near the port include pool bars, crafter’s markets and The Dolphin Discovery. The Dolphin Discovery is one of more popular attractions since it offers shows and opportunities to swim with aquatic mammals. Other than those options, there is an array of restaurants, spas, museums and cuisine tastings in Mahahual.

For travelers who are comfortable straying a little further from the port, there are other adventurous places to visit. The Maya Chan Beach is a private beach resort available to cruise ship passengers. Tours of the Chacchoben Mayan City are enlightening and active excursions for tourists. For tourists who are tired of the beach and want to try something new, Mayá The Lost Mayan Kingdom may be the perfect fit. This new park located in the Mayan jungle is an adventurous traveler’s dream. It is filled with exciting experiences like zip lining, a coaster and huge water slides that come out of a structure resembling a massive Mayan temple.

Transportation

Cruisers certainly have to rely on public transportation when getting to and from excursions or simply exploring a destination. So, ports are considered much safer and nicer for cruisers when public transportation is readily available. Costa Maya has great options for cruise passengers trying to utilize their time off their ship. For groups with children, mobility difficulties or even travelers that simply prefer not to walk down the long pier there is a trolly. This free trolly transports guests on a continuous loop. Travelers that, by chance, arrive during a crowded time (when the maximum capacity of four ships are in port) may have to wait a bit for the trolley to return. Once travelers get to the cruise terminal, they will need to secure transportation to Mahahual.

The most popular options are the local shuttle, taxis or golf carts. The shuttle bus to Mahahual and taxis are pretty affordable options since they both cost around $3 per person each way. Golf carts are a better fit for those who want to independently explore. But travelers will pay a hefty price for that autonomy (compared to the other transportation options) as golf carts cost around $30 each hour to rent.
