Ferry to Tasmania - Things you need to know

How far ahead do i need to book the spirit of tasmania ferry.

The Spirit of Tasmania ferry to Tasmania is very popular with road trippers, and it is critical that you start planning your Geelong to Devonport ferry crossing as early as possible.

First of all, you can book your tickets up to 11 months before your sailing date, so there is no point trying to book any earlier than that.

The two most important factors impacting on how early you book you Spirit of Tasmania ticket are your vehicle type, and the time of year you want to visit and return from Tasmania.

  • Cars and campervans – If you are driving a car or small campervan then I recommend booking at least 6 months ahead
  • Caravans and motorhomes – If you are towing a caravan or driving a tall vehicle such as a motorhome then you should aim to book your ferry tickets  at least 9-12 months in advance .

I hear a lot of people saying, “ Nahhh, she’ll be right mate. I’ll leave it until closer to the date. ” But these same people so often get caught out by the extremely high demand for travel to/from Tasmania, and the lack of deck space for tall/long/wide vehicles on the ferry.

The time of year is critical – especially for your return sail. As the temperatures start to drop in late autumn and early winter, many campers and caravanners leave Tasmania for warmer temperatures up north. Fares at this time of year are very limited, and it is not uncommon for travellers to be stuck in Tasmania for weeks or even months waiting for a spot to open up . Mind you, some might say this is a good thing  😂

The other bonus for booking early is that you can often secure cheaper rates, and that’s always a good thing!

Spirit of Tasmania route and map

The Spirit of Tasmania ferry sails in both directions between Geelong in the Australian state of Victoria, and Devonport in the state of Tasmania.

Geelong is a large city on the southern Victorian coastline, about a 1.5 hour drive from central Melbourne (75km).

Devonport is a small city on the northern coastline of Tasmania, about a 1.5 hour drive from Launceston or 4hrs from Hobart.

The ferry crosses Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait, with a total route measuring 415km (224 nautical miles).

For our international travellers, you will be pleased to know that you don’t need to worry about special visas for transiting between Victoria and Tasmania.

Spirit of Tasmania travel time

Are you wondering how long does the Spirit of Tasmania take?

Depending on weather conditions the Spirit of Tasmania travel time varies between 8.5hrs and 11.5hrs from Geelong to Tasmania, and vice versa.

When working out how much time to allow, don’t forget that you can’t just turn up at your ferry departure time, as you need to allow time to be processed and to board.

Check-in opens between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours prior to departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time. If you are a special needs passenger then you will need to check in at least 2 hours prior to departure.

Disembarking from the ferry can take as long as 30 minutes, but in speaking with other travellers it is normally more like 15-20mins.

Best time of year to sail on the Spirit of Tasmania

Demand for the Spirit of Tasmania varies greatly throughout the year – pick your dates wisely and you can save a lot of money!

🌞  Summer – December to February – is the most popular time for visiting Tasmania, and berths book out early. A second ship sails during these times to provide greater capacity.

🍂  Late summer and autumn – February to May – is very popular for the return sail from Devonport to Geelong, as this is when many ‘grey nomads’ and other long term travellers head north and leave Tasmania for warmer weather. Weather conditions at this time of year are also a bit more calm than usual meaning a smoother sail is a little bit more likely.

❄️  Winter – June to August – is the least popular time to visit Tasmania due to the cool conditions and the possibility of a rougher sail, but many agree this is when Tasmania is at its most beautiful. Tickets for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry can be cheaper at this time of year due to lower demand.

Spirit of Tasmania timetable and sailing times

The Spirit of Tasmania timetable is surprisingly consistent throughout the year, making it easy to remember what your sailing times are.

There are two types of journey – a ‘Night Sail’ and a ‘Day Sail’.

  • Night Sail – The night sail is available year-round in both directions and leaves at varying times between 6:45pm and 11:30pm.
  • Day Sail – The day sail operates in both directions mostly during peak periods, leaving at either 8:30am or 10:30am. During off-peak periods you will most likely find there are no day sailings.

Spirit of Tasmania prices

It’s the big question for all travellers, what is the Spirit of Tasmania price and how much am I going to have to put aside in my budget?

There are four parts to your fare, depending on how you plan on travelling:

  • Passenger price
  • Vehicle price
  • Pet price (if applicable)

Spirit of Tasmania ferry price for couples and families

Spirit of Tasmania ferry prices are heavily dependent on the season and passenger demand.

This means that prices are always changing over time, and the best way to check prices at different times and for different vehicle combinations is to create a fake booking.

Things that affect your  Spirit of Tasmania cost include:

  • Time of year
  • Traveller demand
  • No. of passengers
  • Your vehicle size
  • Your choice of accommodation for the sail
  • Bringing a pet and using their secure kennels

To give you an idea of typical prices I created fake bookings for four common scenarios in high season (January). The table below shows you how they vary for a return ticket, depending on how you plan on travelling.

In winter (June) prices are around 50% cheaper if you are just bringing a car, or 30% cheaper if you are towing a caravan.

You can also see that bringing a caravan will increase the price by around $1,000 – however this can vary substantially depending on just how big your caravan is.

Note : Prices are indicative only and were correct at the time of writing (December 2023)

You will be pleased to hear that all online bookings have a 48hr ‘cooling off’ period, which means that if you cancel your tickets within 48hrs of purchase then you will receive a full refund of the ticket value (as long as you purchased your ticket more than 7 days before your travel date).

Please note that any amendment fees or payment fees that you may have incurred are non-refundable (just the ticket value). You can find more info about their fare types and T&Cs   here .

Spirit of Tasmania passenger prices

Passenger prices underpin every Spirit of Tasmania ticket price.

While most people choose to bring a vehicle, this isn’t always the case, with many travellers picking up their rental car on arrival in Devonport.

As you can imagine, the passenger-only fare is the cheapest Spirit of Tasmania  price option.

Spirit of Tasmania passenger prices are typically around $540 per person (adult) for a return ticket in summer, and around $280 in winter.

These walk-on fares are sometimes placed on sale (particularly during off-peak times) resulting in prices as long as around $140 return, and I also noticed that ‘ last minute walk-on ‘ fare reductions are occasionally made available – so it’s definitely worth checking the Spirit of Tasmania website and signing up to the newsletter to keep abreast of special offers!

Spirit of Tasmania cabin prices

Booking a cabin is the most popular option for travellers that value their privacy, and unless you sleep like the dead on a night sail I would say a cabin is absolutely essential for a good night’s sleep. You’ll be pleased to hear that Spirit of Tasmania cabin prices are also very reasonable!

There are a number of different options:

  • Deluxe Cabin (from $499*) – Queen bed, ensuite, TV, twin windows, table and chairs, plenty of space
  • Twin Bed Porthole Cabin (from $199 * ) – Two single beds, ensuite, window
  • Four Bed Porthole Cabin ($199 * ) – Two bunk beds, ensuite, window
  • Four Bed Inside Cabin (from $149 * ) – Two bunk beds, ensuite
  • Three Bed Accessible Cabin** – One single and a bunk bed, wheelchair accessible ensuite, alarm button

All cabins include adjustable air-conditioning, ensuite bathroom, 230V power point, desk/chair, bedding, towels and soap.

Before covid hit the travel industry it used to be possible to book a ‘share’ cabin, however this is no longer possible and now all cabins are private.

*  Prices are indicative only, as they vary throughout the year (and can be lower when ‘on sale’) – but they give you a good idea of what to expect

** Accessible  cabins are not available via the website and you will need to call them to check availability and make your booking

Spirit of Tasmania recliner chairs

If you feel like a cabin is overkill for your journey – especially if you’re a solo traveller – you may like the idea of booking a recliner on your day sail.

Recliners are like the chairs you see on an airplane in business class. The floor-to-ceiling windows provide great views , and the cinema-style design provides a lot of extra comfort compared to the public lounges .

Spirit of Tasmania recliner prices start from $39 on day sails, and on a night sail every traveller is provided with a recliner at no charge.

Using a free recliner on a night sail is a good way of saving money, but keep in mind that you will be sleeping in proximity to strangers who may snore or get restless in the night. If you’re a light sleeper I don’t recommend this option at all.

Spirit of Tasmania 'Day Ticket'

The last option to keep in mind is a ‘Day Ticket’.

These tickets are available on day sails only, and they are free.

When you select a Day Ticket you are essentially saying, “ I don’t want any accommodation, and I’m happy to just walk around the ship and use the public lounge seating and other public facilities. “

Spirit of Tasmania vehicle prices

Passenger and cabin prices are all pretty easy to understand, but where things get more complicated is your vehicle price.  The reason for this is because there are only so many vehicles that can fit on the Spirit of Tasmania, and space – especially for large vehicles – is at a premium.

When making your booking online you will see that it asks you for the make and model of your car/van/motorhome, and the details of any vehicles you might be towing.

The critical information you need to provide here are the length and height of your vehicle(s).

When calculating the length make sure you include the drawbar and anything attached to the rear of your caravan eg. bike racks or a jerry can. T hey will then add the length of your caravan to the length of your vehicle to work out your total parking space.

When calculating the height, don’t forget to include anything on your roof rack as well. If you find that you are just over the 2.1m height threshold, you may want to reduce your tyre pressure to get you under – but please only consider this if it can be done safely.

I’d love to provide you with specific $s, however there are far too many combinations for me to give you all the prices, and you will need to create fake bookings to check for yourself.

For a quick guide, check the table I provide above, where I show you prices for a standard 4WD towing a caravan in summer.

Important : Spirit of Tasmania check these heights/lengths, and if you under-report your vehicle dimensions you may need to pay more, or in the worst case scenario you may not be allowed to travel due to a lack of sufficiently large berths.

Spirit of Tasmania pet prices

If you love travelling with your furry friend then you’ll be pleased to hear that you can take your dog on the Spirit of Tasmania !

There are two options – using a kennel, or keeping your dog in your own vehicle.

A kennel will cost you around $22 each way.

Leaving your pet inside your vehicle is free, but there is a specific process you must follow. I provide more information about this below.

Pets on the Spirit of Tasmania

One of the best things about the Spirit of Tasmania ferry to Tasmania is that, unlike a plane, you can bring your pet dog or cat with you!

There are two options – using the Spirit of Tasmania kennels, or keeping your pet in your own vehicle.

If you are bringing a dog you must ensure Fido has been Hydatid wormed within 14 days of sailing.

🚢 Option 1 - Pay for a Spirit of Tasmania pet kennel

During the sail pets are kept in cage kennels on a lower deck with excellent ventilation.

Pet Attendants regularly check all animals staying in the kennels and fresh water is also supplied throughout the journey.

Bedding isn’t provided by the Spirit of Tasmania , and to help your pet settle in and stay warm on the open air deck it’s a good idea to leave their favourite blanket or chew toy in the kennel.

To learn more about bringing your pet on the ferry to Tasmania I found this video by the Spirit of Tasmania to be the best place to start, and for a traveller’s perspective this video by ‘ Chasing Dreams ‘ is really useful as well.

🚘 Option 2 - Use your own vehicle

Keeping your dog inside your vehicle is a great option if you have concerns about keeping your dog in a kennel, and how your dog will handle the sea crossing.

The Spirit of Tasmania neither promotes nor recommends this option, but it is permitted so long as you follow the correct process.

To do this you need to:

  • During the online booking process select ‘0’ pets
  • When you have completed your booking call the Spirit of Tasmania and tell them that you would like to keep your dog in your vehicle
  • They will send you a disclaimer form that you need to fill in and send it back to them (email or post) at least 24hrs prior to sailing

Spirit of Tasmania staff will not be checking on your pet during the sail, so it is completely up to you to ensure their comfort , and that they have adequate ventilation and water to last the trip.

The ship may encounter rough seas, so it is very important that you make sure their water isn’t going to tip over. Toilet training is also recommended 💩😝

Spirit of Tasmania Boarding Process

The Spirit of Tasmania boarding process   is very simple and easy to follow .

The team that greet you in Geelong have been helping travellers get their cars, campervans, caravans and motorhomes onto the ferry for decades and they have got the process down to a fine art.

  • Enter Geelong terminal  in your vehicle.
  • Undergo the security and quarantine check (gas bottle check, inspection inside and outside the car, under-bonnet check, boat and fishing gear check, fridge check, esky check).
  • Follow their instructions and drive to the ticket booth (remember to have your printed tickets and licence ready) and collect your boarding passes
  • Follow the car in front until directed to enter the correct waiting lane (cars and small trailers on the right – caravans and small trucks on the left)
  • Commence boarding up the ramp, following instructions (caravans go after cars) – toilets are available if needed
  • Park your vehicle . If you have a manual then put it in ‘Neutral’. If you have an automatic then put it in ‘Park’
  • If you have a dog you will then follow the instructions of staff to kennel your dog
  • Leave the deck , remembering to pick up a flyer describing your deck number (so you can find your car when it’s time to disembark)

Things to do on the Spirit of Tasmania

You’ve done the hard work, now it’s time to relax and enjoy the cruise!

Entertainment Options

There are two cinemas on board, showing latest release movies for both adults and children at multiple times throughout the cruise. It isn’t free, but it’s a great way to spend the time.

Throughout the sail you’ll find musicians popping up to keep your toes tapping.

Reading Room

Want to get away from it all? The reading room is the perfect place to curl up with a good book.

Chill out with some light TV entertainment at one of the many public TVs scattered throughout the ship.

This colourful and safe play space will be a magnet for the littl’uns. There’s slippery slides, a jungle gym and plenty of other fun things to keep them occupied.

Free Digital Magazines

In the 48 hours prior to boarding you can download as many premium magazines and newspapers as you like using the PressReader app, for later offline reading on your cruise or as you travel around Tasmania.

Kids Game Zone

Filled with arcade games and plenty of comfy lounges, your kids will have hours of fun.

School Holiday Entertainment

From December to April the Spirit of Tasmania makes things really special for the children on board, with musicians, face painters, entertainers and other exciting activities.

Internet and Phone Service

I recommend using your cruise on the Spirit of Tasmania to do a digital detox, but if you need to get online you’ll find WiFi is available in all public spaces for a fee .

Travellers tell me that Telstra has the best coverage for the crossing, with just a small section in the middle of Bass Strait where you will lose signal.

Baby-changing facilities are available at multiple locations across multiple decks.

Special Needs Passengers

Just because you have special needs does not mean a cruise on the Spirit of Tasmania is off limits.

They have the people and the equipment to help you embark and disembark safely, and the ship layout has been designed to cater for all passengers with special needs.

Let them know at the time of booking.

Food and Drink

Tasmania is renowned for its amazingly fresh and delicious food and drink, and you will get your first taste of this incredible cuisine at either the Tasmanian Market Kitchen (TMK) or The Pantry .

Antipasto plates, roast dinners, dessert platters, massive buffet, and heaps of options for the kids – they’ve got every base covered.

Still feeling hungry? The Spirit of Tasmania run a fantastic program called the ‘ Flavours of Tassie ‘, where you can taste a range of gourmet Tasmanian products while chatting with the producers themselves!

And when it’s time for a beverage or two you’ll love the extensive selection of premium Tasmanian beers, wines, ciders, spirits, and non-alcoholic options. Anyone for a Moo Brew? 😀

Staff can even make tour or accommodation bookings for you, so it’s all ready to go when you arrive in Tasmania!

National Parks Pass / Fishing Licences

If you plan on visiting Tasmania’s National Parks then a ‘Parks Pass’ is essential.

At the same time you can also organise any fishing licences you may need.

Smoking is not permitted indoors, however there a number of designated smoking areas on outside decks.

Last-minute ferry checklist

Pro Tip –   Check these items 2-3 weeks before departure.

✓ Buy your sea sickness medication – Travacalm or Kwells are popular over the counter medications. Ginger tablets or acupressure bands have also been found to help some travellers.

They are also very easy to order online:

  • Kwells for Adults – Click here
  • Kwells for Children – Click here
  • Travacalm ‘Original’ – Click here
  • Travacalm Travel Band – Click here
  • Blackmores Ginger Tablets – Click here

✓ Allow enough time to check in and board the ferry  – The terminal gates open for quarantine checks 2.5 hours prior to departure, while boarding commences 1.5hrs prior to departure. Final check-in is 45 minutes prior to departure.

✓ Plan your meals – There are plenty of meal options on the Spirit of Tasmania (see below), but to save money you might prefer to pack your own. Remember that Tasmania has strict quarantine laws that are enforced before you get on the ferry (see below for more info), so don’t pack something that is only going to get thrown out by the quarantine officers.

✓ Worm your dog  – All dogs travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania must be Hydatid wormed within 14 days of travel. At the quarantine checkpoint they will ask for evidence (eg. dated receipt, or vet’s note).

✓ Mild sedation for your pet  (if necessary) – If you are worried about how your dog will handle the crossing, see your vet and ask whether mild sedation is a good idea or not.

✓ Plan your day bag – Every traveller on the ferry is allowed to take one bag on board (66cm x 46.5cm x 27.5cm, and no weight restrictions apply):

  • medications
  • sea sickness tablets
  • games for the kids
  • warm jacket
  • favourite pillow (for a Night Sail)

✓ Prepare for the quarantine and security check:

  • Check your fridge, esky and/or bags and remove any prohibited food
  • Wash down your fishing and/or boating gear, and also your vehicle/caravan if they are muddy
  • Make sure your gas bottles are turned off, and fully secured

✓ Make sure your tickets are easily accessible  – You will be asked to present your tickets prior to boarding – this can be either a paper copy, or you can have a digital copy ready to show them on your phone

Disembarking and leaving the Spirit of Tasmania

Disembarking from the Spirit of Tasmania is super-easy and is a lot quicker than boarding the ferry – i t is likely you’ll be on dry land in less than 30 minutes.

Disembarking happens in stages, and they will tell you exactly when your stage is planned to commence.

If you’re on a Night Sail you’ll get a wake-up call about an hour before the disembarking process starts.

If you want to eat breakfast on the ship I recommend getting up early as the kitchen gets very busy with people making coffees and buying snacks etc. the closer you get to arrival.

Spirit Of Tasmania

The Spirit of Tasmania is a large passenger and car ferry that travels between Melbourne and Devonport, Tasmania.

The journey between the two locations takes between 9-11 hours, and there are typically two trips per day one day trip and one evening trip.

Spirit of Tasmania Ferry, Booking, Travel Time, Ticket Fares & Pricing

Tickets must be booked ahead of time and can be booked up to 11 months in advance. To book a ticket, you must know the following details: Car type (including make, model and registration), names of all people travelling and the date of birth of all people travelling. Caravans, motorhomes and motorbikes are permitted on the ferry and are priced in different price brackets. The price for your vehicle will depend on the vehicle type, length and height.

There are many ticket choices available, including 222 private cabins , shared cabins or comfortable recliner chairs. The cabins come with a bed and private shower and are the best way to travel on the Spirit of Tasmania. During the summer, you can sail by day or by night with the day sailing departing at 9am and arriving in Tasmania at 6pm the same day. Night sailing is generally scheduled for 7:30pm departure from Melbourne with the arrival time of 6:30am.

Pets are permitted to travel on the ferry and must be booked in advance. Once your pet is safely stored, you cannot visit your pet on the ferry until arrival as they will be located in a secure area. They will travel on a ventilated deck and provided with fresh water throughout the journey. They will also be checked on regularly by ferry staff. Make sure to check Tasmanian quarantine laws before booking your pet’s trip.

Check-in opens 2.5 hours and closes 60 minutes before departure. There are routine quarantine checks before you board the ferry, so please note that fruits and vegetables are not permitted to be taken on the boat. Photo identification is also required.

You don’t need to check in any bags if you are taking your car. Take a personal bag with you and leave the rest of your luggage in your vehicle. Just make sure you take what you need as your car cannot be accessed during the voyage.

Once you are on the ferry, relax by getting something to eat or drink at the many restaurants and bars, catch a film at the onsite cinema, play the pokies, listen to some live music or read in the quiet room. WiFi is also available onboard for a fee.

We have booked to travel to Tasmania on Sat 17 Feb. We have an 8.5-meter motorhome with which we tow a Suzuki Grand Vitara. The overall length of the combination is 13.5 meters. It is not possible to reverse the two vehicles and I am not familiar with the Spirit Terminal area. Can you please provide me with a map showing where we have to check in and where we can legally park prior to check in? Also where we go after check-in when boarding? This will help me plan my maneuvering during the check-in and boarding procedure and thus avoid a situation that might require the disconnection of the car which can take a little time and cause me some embarrassment!

Lots of questions in your submission, so I suggest you contact the Spirit of Tasmania directly to discuss the boarding information. They will be able to give you some advice about parking for your particular circumstances.

Best regards, Jess

Spirit of Tasmania Travel Guide: 2023 Edition

Anthony

  • Travel Guides

Growing up my family would visit our Tasmanian relatives over the summer holidays. This would mean a trip on the Spirit of Tasmania. Over the years the Spirit of Tasmania has continued to evolve. I’ve put together a travel guide on the Spirit of Tasmania to give you an idea of what to expect.

Spirit of Tasmania

Where Does the Spirit of Tasmania Leave From Now

The Spirit of Tasmania departs the mainland from a new terminal in Geelong. The Spirit of Tasmania used to leave from Port Melbourne but they moved to a purpose built terminal in Geelong.

The Geelong terminal is around a 1 hours drive from the City of Melbourne.

The old terminal was quite cramped which meant queues of traffic would form in Port Melbourne. The new terminal is more spacious and has plenty of parking for those waiting to board the ship.

Spirit of Tasmania Route

The Spirit of Tasmania travels between Geelong in Victoria and Devenport in Tasmania. Devenport is located in the very north of Tasmania and is around 3 hour drive to Hobart.

How Long Does the Spirit of Tasmania Take

The journey on The Spirit of Tasmania takes between 9.5-11.5 hours. The sailing time depends on the weather.

Sailing Times for the Spirit of Tasmania

The Spirit of Tasmania has both night crossings and day crossings. During winter, Spirit of Tasmania only runs Night Crossings. Day crossings are operated between September and April with daily day crossings happening during peak periods.

The night crossings leave at 6:45pm, 9:30pm or 11:30pm depending on the day. A departure at 6:45pm will get you to your destination around 5:30-6am.

Spirit of Tasmania operates two ships. This means that ships can leave each evening from both Geelong and Davenport.

How Much Does The Spirit of Tasmania Cost

The Spirit of Tasmania has a dynamic pricing system. So fares do change and will depend on demand and when you’re booking.

If you’re looking to book a crossing for 2 people, with a car and cabin it will cost around ~$600. However this price will depend on the number of people you are travelling with, the car you have and the cabin you choose. The time of year will also have a big impact on price. Expect to pay more during peak periods.

Cabin Pricing on the Spirit of Tasmania

If you can handle sitting in a recliner (similar to an airline seat) overnight the price would be around ~$400 with a car.

If you’re travelling with a family it’s most likely cheaper than flying to Tasmania. For my family it was always a more cost effective option. And of course you won’t need to hire a car at the other end. Each Cabin can sleep 4 people so it’s more economical for a family.

How Many Spirit of Tasmania Ships are There

There are currently two Spirit of Tasmania Ships. These are the Spirit of Tasmania 1 and Spirit of Tasmania 2. Spirit of Tasmania III used to operate from Sydney to Devenport. The Spirit of Tasmania I and II have identical features.

In 2024 two new Spirit of Tasmania Ships will replace the current fleet. Unlike the current ships, the Spirit of Tasmania IV and Spirit of Tasmania V are purpose built for TT line. The new Spirit of Tasmania ships will have an increase vehicle capacity and carry 1800 passengers. You can find out more about the new ships here .

Is it Easy to Sleep on the Spirit of Tasmania

One of the advantages of travelling on the Spirit of Tasmania overnight is you go to sleep and arrive in your destination. For overnight voyagers you can choose either a Cabin or Recliner. I highly recommend the Cabin over the recliner. I have slept in both and found the recliner to be quite difficult for sleeping. The cabin on the other hand has a proper bed. You don’t need to bring any bedding or pillows – it’s just like a hotel room with everything provided.

I find it quite easy to sleep on the Spirit of Tasmania.

Last year we travelled from Tasmania to Geelong on ship and after disembarking headed to Sydney however we encountered huge early morning traffic back up whilst driving towards Melbourneto get on the Western ring road.Is there a better suggestion re route to take instead of being held up with very slow moving cars heading into Melbourne

Live Life And Roam

Spirit of Tasmania Guide: All You Need To Know

Spirit of Tasmania is the ideal transportation mode when travelling with family and kids, this guide covers all you need to know. The ship is the link between Tasmania and the rest of mainland Australia. It is an enormous passenger ferry equipped with all the latest mod-cons and facilities to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride. We travelled with Oliver when he was eleven months old who surprisingly had a blast on the ship, albeit it did take him a bit longer to fall asleep being in such a different environment. We sailed overnight, which in our opinion is ideal and gives the best of both worlds, enjoying the ship and arriving well rested in the morning. Yes, you could fly, but where’s the fun in that. Also this way you can bring absolutely everything you will need for an awesome roadtrip, with no mucking around with airports, car rentals and hire places.

Spirit Of Tasmania Guide - Live Life and Roam - Port Melbourne

Table of Contents

Our Guide to Sailing With Spirit Of Tasmania

Spirit of Tasmania sails both directions between Port Melbourne, Victoria and Devonport, Tasmania. With no road between the two states, the ferry is the only option for land-based transit of passengers, vehicles and goods. Being the only option, the cost is actually subsidised by the Australian government, slightly reducing the fare.

The ship sails through Port Phillip Bay and crosses the narrow strip of sea between the two states, Bass Strait. The total journey measures 429km, or for the keen sailor, 232 nautical miles.

Travel Time

The travel time of the crossing is between 9 and 11 hours. This difference in travel time is on account of maintaining a comfortable crossing in varying weather conditions.

You will also need to check-in at least 45 minutes before departure time whilst disembarking could take up to 30 minutes.

Route Spirit of Tasmania

Benefits of Sailing vs Flying

Travelling on Spirit of Tasmania holds many benefits over the faster flying option.

  • You can bring everything, including the kitchen sink. Seriously with no ‘luggage restrictions’ and the ability to bring your own vehicle and caravan you don’t have to worry about having to sacrifice bringing certain things. That means no parking or hire car costs and also no hire fees for all your hiking & camping gear, bikes, golf clubs, surfboards or even kayaks. We may have slightly overpacked because of this haha!
  • You can bring your pet along with you to enjoy the holiday as well!
  • The sail itself is part of the experience of the holiday, with so much fun and activities onboard, sailing most certainly is not a bore and will definitely be memorable for all! After all, travel is all about the journey as much as the destination.
  • There is an onboard Tourism Hub to get your knowledge of and Tasmania and Victoria fully up to scratch, you can also purchase National Parks passes there.

Nighttime Spirit of Tas

Spirit of Tasmania

Spirit of Tasmania is reminiscent of a cruise ship, there are that many facilities and features! With gaming lounges to cinemas and restaurants, there is not much else you could want on board for the interstate journey. There are actually two identical ships, Spirit of Tasmania I & Spirit of Tasmania II. Both measuring an impressive 194m and being comprised of 11 decks and 222 cabins, they are able to take up to 1,400 passengers and 500 vehicles.

Boarding Spirit of Tasmania Live life and roam

Day Sail Vs Night Sail

There are two journey types dependant on the time of year, a Day Sail or  Night Sail .

The ‘Night Sails ‘ operate year-round from both Melbourne and Devonport, leaving at varying times between 7:30pm and 10:30pm.

The ‘Day Sails’ operate most of the year, however, they sometimes do not operate throughout winter. These leave ateither 8:30am.

Both options have their own pro’s and con’s, however in our opinion the night crossing win’s hands down. You can still enjoy the benefits of the ship’s facilities, but then when you tire, you can retire to a cabin or recliner and sleep through the rest of the journey with ease. This is especially handy if travelling with children. Not only does this make the time pass quickly, but it also saves you a nights accommodation that you would otherwise be spending. Additionally, you arrive fresh and ready to start your road trip from the crack of dawn, much better than arriving only to have to retire for the night without seeing anything!

Then again, at night time you don’t get to enjoy the views from the deck, although to be honest there’s only so much looking out the window that we would be able to enjoy without having boredom set in!

Night view Spirit of Tas

Accommodation Options

Being an enormous vessel, you have a wide range of choices regarding how you spend your time onboard suited to all budgets and travellers.

The recliners are located in their own room and resemble a chair you’d find in business class of an aeroplane. On the night sails, they are free to use to get a nights sleep, whilst if you want to rest in one on the day sails they will set you back $39. Blankets are also provided on the night sails. The recliners are located in their own section of the ship and look out over the constantly changing view through floor to ceiling windows. If travelling an infant you won’t be able to use a recliner, which to be honest is probably for the best for everyone!!

Of the 222 cabins onboard, there are various categories of room available:

All cabins have been completely refurbished and feature elegant furnishings with a bold new colour scheme. In addition, they have air-conditioning/heating with adjustable controls, a powerpoint, wall-mounted reading lights, hanging space, a desk with a chair and a wall mirror. Bedding, towels and soap are provided.

  • Deluxe Cabin  – These are the premium cabins and feature a Queen bed, ensuite, TV, twin windows, table and chairs, heaps of room
  • Twin Bed Private Porthole Cabin  – Two single beds, ensuite, window
  • Four Bed Private Porthole Cabin   – Two bunk beds, ensuite, window
  • Four Bed Inside Cabin   – Two bunk beds, ensuite
  • Female or Male Shared Cabin   – As above, but shared with other passengers of the same sex if travelling solo.

If you book an infant, a cot will be placed in your room. However, to be honest we recommend you bring your own portacot so they have a bit of familiarity (as long as it is a small one, we have the Babybjorn one and it fit fine). Having a cabin makes a world of difference in waking up feeling fresh and being able to have a shower before starting the day. Or on a day sail its simply a good place to relax!

Prices vary between day and night sails and time of year so best to check through the booking page to get an idea for when you want to go.

Cabin Spirit of Tasmania

Booking Tickets

As a guide it’s advised to book Spirit of Tasmania 4-6 months in advance to ensure availability and get the best price. In peak periods spaces do fill up early, especially for higher vehicles.

You will then need to advise Spirit of Tasmania of passenger and vehicle details. It is critical to input the right vehicle details as different sized vehicles are stowed in different areas of the ship dependent on size. If bringing a caravan or trailer you will need to measure the total length to ensure you have an appropriate parking space reserved.

Then choose whether you want to do a day or night sail, your accommodation choice and you are all set!

Boarding Process & Checking In

Port Melbourne is smack bang in the middle of the CBD, so make sure you account for any traffic you may encounter. Devonport, on the other hand, is super quiet.

Check-in opens 2.5 hours prior to sailing and closes 45 minutes before departure. On both sails, we gave ourselves plenty of time and arrived when check-in opened. This allowed us to settle into our cabins, explore and start our meals before setting off on our journey, making sure that Ollie would be able to keep to his usual bedtime routine.

The whole check-in process went super smoothly. First, you will drive through a quarantine check-point where they check your vehicle for any fresh fruit or vegetables, as well as check-in any portable butane/LPG canisters and guns. Tasmania has really strict biosecurity laws restricting fresh items being brought in so as to protect the natural ecosystem. Your car will be tagged as passing the inspection.

Then you will continue on to the check-in counter where you will hand over the quarantine tag e-ticket. You will be handed over your boarding passes and key cards to your cabin and told where to head next! After driving onto the ship you will be instructed where to park, after which grab your overnight bag and head up to the decks to explore.

Make sure to grab everything you need for the trip as once the ship departs, you are unable to access your car.

Also, grab one of the flyers in the stairway as you leave the car that tells you where your car is parked. We didn’t on our first trip and struggled to find out the car again in the morning haha!

Stairwell Spirit of Tasmania - Live Life and Roam

From there it was up to find our cabin. We were surprised as we walked the corridor how much we felt like we were on land in a hotel. A quick swipe of our keycard and we were in our private cabin, with the window overlooking the sun setting over Port Phillip Bay.

Our Room Spirit of Tas

If travelling without a cabin, there are loads of seats around the ship, but it would be best to find a good area of the ship to claim before all the good spots get taken!

Spirit of Tas

Keeping Yourself & The Kids Occupied Onboard

It’s no surprise a big ship like Spirit of Tasmania has loads to do onboard, and the journey will seriously sail by! Here are just a few of the facilities to keep you occupied:

There are two cinemas featuring comfy seats and offering up the latest kids and adult movies. This is a great way to kill a couple of hours, especially on the day sail. You have to buy your tickets once onboard from the kiosk, but be warned seat’s book out quickly, so try get yours asap. We recommend if travelling with kids to try and save watching a movie until the second half of your trip once they have already fully explored the ship.

Cinema Spirit of Tas

Kids Game Zone

Ollie may not even be one yet but the second he saw the games room he was clawing at our arms trying to get us to turn there! The Galactica Games room is complete the classic arcade games you love such as car racing, pinball and the usual claw machine! James and Ollie rode on the motorbike game together and kept winning over and over, and clearly Ollie is now a motorbike fan haha! Make sure to bring a few spare gold coins along to have a bit of fun in here!

Arcade Spirit of Tas Live Life and Roam

Gaming Consoles

In another part of the ship, you will find four separate tv and Xbox setups! Whenever we walked past they were all always in use, so clearly quite popular!

You’ll find a decent-sized jungle gym style playground complete with slide, ramp and soft play pyramids. Oliver was the only kid in there when we visited so he had free reign!

Playground Spirit of Tas

To our surprise when walking the corridors we found a cosy area where you could hang out and listen to some live music in some comfy chairs, with a drink in hand.

Tourism Hub

The Tourism Hub contains all the knowledge you need to know about where you are headed. You’ll find friendly staff and more pamphlets then you could bring with you. You can also purchase Tasmanian National Parks & Fishing passes from here. Staff can even make tour or accommodation bookings for you, so it’s all ready to go when you arrive in Tasmania!

Reading Room

This cosy nook is the perfect spot to chill out and get your read on. In the 48 hours prior to boarding, you can download as many premium magazines and newspapers as you like using the PressReader app, for later offline reading on your cruise or as you travel around Tasmania.

Public TV’s

Scattered around the ship you will find various TV’s playing the usual stations, so don’t worry you won’t miss that game that you have to see!

Tv Spirit of Tas

School Holiday Entertainment

During school holidays (December to April) the whole family will be kept entertained with local entertainers on hand, including face painting, singers and a roaming entertainment host

Free Media Streaming Free media streaming is available in all public areas (excluding cabins). Stream free-to-air TV on your own device.

Wifi Available

Wifi is available in public areas for a fee, just in case you can’t cope with the forced digital detox. We found that our Telstra phone reception stayed in range until we went to sleep for the night so we were able to ensure Oliver’s sleep music could stream hah!

Dining options on Spirit of Tasmania

There are loads of meal and drink options onboard to suit all tastes and hunger levels

Tasmanian Market Kitchen (TMK)

This self-service buffet was our first port of call, and boy did it deliver. The buffet serves up a huge range of Tasmanian inspired marketplace favourites and has all tastes catered for from salad to roast dinner and dessert. Especially yummy was the roast pork and unlimited crackling (I know super-naughty!). Depending on the time of day the TMK serves up Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner so you can well and truly eat your heart out. It will set you back $28.50 for adults, $15 for 15 and under, $10 for 10 and under and free for under 5’s. Ollie actually got a half-decent feed for free as a little person haha! When we woke up in the morning we were still full from dinner, a great success. They also have high chairs for your little ones.

TMK Spirit of Tas

The Terrace Lounge Bar

A bit more relaxed dining is the Terrace Lounge Bar, a bright lounge area with comfy chairs and TV’s throughout. You’ll be able to grab decent pizzas and paninis as well as a range of bar snacks.

The Pantry offers the convenience of delicious coffees, freshly prepared sandwiches, snacks and breakfast items. For a lighter bite to eat The Pantry has you covered.

How rough is the journey?

Spirit of Tasmania is equipped with some serious stabilisers and is massive, however, it can still get quite choppy out in the open waters of Bass Strait. Us oldies were in bed before getting out of Port Philip Bay, at which point it was dead flat. During the night when Ollie woke up, we were at a steady rock, enough that it was a bit of an effort to walk to the bathroom. Although we didn’t need them, it might be a good idea to take seasickness tablets if you get prone to being sick, and especially for kids. Our return journey was probably as rough as it could ever get due to an enormous wintery storm passing through much of the country. The ship was going up and down the waves like in a movie, however, it was still gentle in the way it was happening and we felt completely safe, although it did make sleep a bit harder..especially for Ollie who ended up sleeping in the single bed with Paige!

Spirit View

Disembarking

If you’re not awake already, you will be awoken 45 minutes prior to arrival through the ships speaker system. Disembarking is super straight forward, as long as you remember where your car is! Remember that card we told you to grab when leaving your car, this is the time to bring it out and check what floor you were on. We forgot to grab the card the first time and kept going from level to level as the doors opened.

The different levels disembark one after the other with each level getting access as the previous one clears. We drove straight off and out into Devonport. Often there is a quarantine checkpoint set up to check for fresh food items, however, on that morning, there was nothing. So we just had to patiently wait for all the cars to disperse before being able to jet into town to watch the sunrise over the Mersey Bluff Lighthouse!

Good for families?

In our opinion, a big YES. There is just so much to keep them occupied from the view to the arcades, cinemas and consoles. In fact there’s so much fun stuff that if you’re on a night sail you may have trouble getting them to bed! Much better than being cooped up in airports and aeroplanes.

Oliver was 11 months old and between teething, the ships rocking and a new portacot, the only way he would sleep was in the single bed cuddled up with Paige. This worked out fine though and they both managed to get a good sleep.

A cabin is probably a pretty critical purchase if travelling with small children just to give yourself some of your own space, day or night.

Even though Ollie is just a young tacker, you can tell he loved the whole experience and loved staring out the window.

Arcade Spirit of Tas

What we thought

For us, sailing Spirit of Tasmania was as much about the experience as it was the journey. We had a blast, ate some great food and had a decent night’s sleep. What more could you ask for? You definitely don’t get any of that when you fly on an aeroplane.

The simplicity of it all makes everything so easy, especially when travelling with loads of luggage and little ones in tow. Not having to mess around at the other end trying to sort out a rental car and having all of your own stuff makes it a very attractive option.

Our cabin was spotless and the ensuite was oh so handy in the morning to have a hot shower. Although we were both in single beds we still were comfy, had a great sleep and woke up relatively fresh for 6 am. Although these days 6 am tends to be Olivers latest wake up time anyway haha!

Spirit of Tasmania is the ideal kickstart to your road trip to Tassie and in seriousness, we only have positives to say about it.

Hopefully, this guide about Spirit of Tasmania has come in helpful, but as always, if you have any questions, comment below!

Also, if you are off roadtripping with your little one, be sure to check out our blog on ‘ Road tripping with a baby ‘.

Looks like a wonderful adventure your little family had. We regularly sailed with the Spirit of Tasmania in the past, we will have to make a return some time.

Thank you so much I’m doing this alone with small car and caravan and I’m so frightened but I’ll have to suck it up and thank you for all your advice Lyn Horton

So glad you enjoyed our blog! Seriously sailing with Spirit was a total breeze and we know you can do it! The staff are all super helpful as well 🙂

Geelong Devonport ferry guide

The Geelong-Devonport ferry is the only ferry to Tasmania. This boat used to go from Melbourne, but this changed at the end of 2022. Thanks to the brand new terminal, you can expect an extra comfortable and smooth departure. Park your car for free and get on the boat in no time!

You don't have to be bored on board. The ships are very well equipped for a trip that takes about 10 hours. You can choose from a day and night cruise.

Things you need to know about the Geelong Devonport ferry

  • This ferry is operated by Spirit of Tasmania
  • Check-in opens between 1.5 hours to 2.5 hours prior to departure and closes strictly 45 minutes before the scheduled departure time. If you have special needs, please check in at least 2 hours prior to departure.
  • Geelong has a new free parking area (6000m2) for cars, caravans, and freight vehicles.

New Terminal Address

  • Spirit of Tasmania Quay 136 Corio Quay Road, North Geelong VIC 3215 [ Google maps ]

The costs for a ticket consist of 1) the age of a passenger, 2) the size of a vehicle 3) the accommodation that can be booked on board. As it gets busier on board, tickets tend to get more expensive.

  • A one-way ticket is available for around AUD 99 .
  • When we booked a return trip for a family with a car in January, it became a lot more expensive. The price went up to AUD 1777 . Because we booked one night trip, we saved on an overnight stay elsewhere.

On this route, both the car deck and the cabins sell out quickly during the busier periods. Therefore, book your trip in time.

Standard Car Fares (each way)

Take your car on holiday with you and turn your holiday into a touring adventure. Load up the car with extra suitcases, fishing rods, golf clubs – whatever you like!

A ‘standard car’ is a normal passenger car, people mover, 4 wheel drive or use up to a maximum overall length of 5 metres long and no wider than 2 metres (Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon, Tarago, Toyota Landcruiser or similar style of vehicles are the largest that may be booked under this classification). Vehicles with a height of more than 2.1 metres cannot be booked online.

The prices listed include the deduction of the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme rebate of $188 for a standard car.

Terms and conditions for vehicle carriage;

  • Fares are in $AUD and include GST.
  • Only licensed drivers are eligible for the accompanied vehicle rate.
  • Vehicle fares indicated apply to motor vehicles registered for use on public roads and are designed primarily for the carriage for passengers.
  • Vehicles not registered as a campervan or motorhome and have a width greater than 2.0 metres and/or registered gross vehicle weight of greater than 2900kg will be subject to classification and freight rates may apply.
  • Additional metre surcharge applied to each excess metre or part thereof. Enquire at time of booking.
  • Vehicles travelling on a permit are to comply with the above and a certificate of roadworthiness must be provided at the time of check-in.
  • Towed vehicle rate is determined by the total overall length of both units. Please refer to non-standard car rates.
  • Conditions apply to trailers that are not registered as a campervan or caravan and carriage of LPG Cylinder bottles.

Prices include GST. *Conditions apply.

Non Standard Car Fares (each way)

Non-standard vehicles are those that have a width greater than 2 metres and/or a length greater than 6 metres. This includes vehicles towing caravans, motorhomes and vehicles towing trailers. The maximum height allowed is 4.2 metres and the maximum width is 2.4 metres.

How to measure your car and caravan/trailer… The total cost for your car and caravan or trailer is determined by measuring the overall length of both units. To work out the cost, measure the distance from the front of the car (including the bulbar) to the back of your caravan or trailer. Vehicle lengths are rounded up to the next whole metre. For example, if your car and caravan or motorhome equal a total of 10.1 metres, it would be classed as 11 metres.

The prices listed include the deduction of the Bass Strait Passenger Vehicle Equalisation Scheme rebate of $188 for a standard car and trailer and $374 for a standard car towing a caravan or a motorhome / campervan.

  • Definition of a caravan – A caravan is defined as a vehicle towed by an eligible passenger vehicle and designed and constructed primarily to provide sleeping accommodation.
  • Definition of a motorhome / campervan – A motorhome / campervan is defined as a road vehicle designed and constructed primarily to provide sleeping accommodation for the number of occupants that the vehicle is designed to carry.
  • Trailers over 2.25 metres high and/or 2.4 metres wide are subject to classification at the time of booking.

Fares are in $AUD and include GST. Passenger fares are additional.

Your best ever winter road trip

Nowhere in Australia does winter better than Tassie, where European-style weather and traditions meet exceptional flavours and wilderness. Annual festivals like Dark Mofo , Tasmanian Whisky Week , Mid-Winter Fest and Tassie Scallop Fiesta are a great excuse to come on down and do this seven-day road trip loaded with winter pleasures.

spirit of tasmania travel time

Day 1: Devonport to Cradle Mountain

Just 20 minutes after driving off Spirit of Tasmania at Devonport, find yourself in pretty countryside looking for culinary gold: black truffles. This rare fungus with an earthy aroma and taste is gathered in winter, when Truffledore offers their Truffle Hunt and Harvest Lunch experience.

Follow a specially trained dog sniffing out truffles, which you can help dig from the soil, before enjoying a fireside meal. Fresh truffles star in all four courses, which might include truffly pasta or mushroom and truffle pizza. Products are available for purchase, so you can take some of that deliciousness home.

From here it’s less than 70km to Cradle Mountain Lodge , which is made for getting cosy on comfy leather armchairs beside massive stone fireplaces. There’s also a good chance of beautiful snow-draped wilderness vistas during winter.

Before your hearty dinner by the lodge’s Highland Restaurant fire, try squeezing in a walk. You will probably see Tassie’s extra-big, furry wombats grazing steps from the door.

spirit of tasmania travel time

Day 2: Cradle Mountain

Today’s the day to see a Tasmanian icon: Cradle Mountain. This twin peak in Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park is always awe-inspiring, but at its snow-covered best in winter.

Experienced, energetic hikers could tackle the eight-hour Cradle Summit walk, or you can admire the mountain from different angles on the quicker, easier Dove Lake circuit . Either way you’re doing one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks.

Want a cruisier day? An eyeful of the mountain is an easy drive from the lodge, and the aptly named Enchanted Walk is on your doorstep. Another of the 60 Great Short Walks, it only takes 20 minutes, and is especially magical with snow sprinkled on the mossy trees and colourful fungi.

Whatever you do, find time for the lodge’s Waldheim Alpine Spa , where pampering comes with wilderness views. Choose from spa treatments such as the Hikers Ritual mud wrap, body scrub and massage, or luxuriate in the private Spa Sanctuary. Designed for singles and couples, it offers everything from outdoor hot tub to Tasmanian sparkling wine.

Day 3: Cradle Mountain to Launceston

After some more walking or relaxing, head to Launceston 140km east. It’s a UNESCO City of Gastronomy, so choose CBD accommodation that puts you in the thick of this town’s good food. Smart, newish Hotel Verge is next to Saturday morning’s Harvest farmers’ market – a top breakfast option – and strolling distance from great cafes and restaurants.

Tonight’s warming dinner could be at Stillwater , recently named among Tasmania’s five best restaurants by Gourmet Traveller magazine. Overlooking the Tamar River, this rustic-chic dining room in a heritage mill complex champions local, seasonal produce. Winter dishes might include wagyu rump with beetroot and rainbow chard, or hazelnut sponge with poached quinces.

Or try relative newcomer Grain of the Silos , the restaurant of a striking grain-silo conversion hotel. Spacious and modern, it also offers river vistas and a menu driven by what’s local and seasonal.

Day 4: Launceston to Derby return

Go big for breakfast, perhaps at Cafe Mondello or Bread + Butter , then drive 100km north-east to Derby and get your blood pumping on the world-renowned Blue Derby mountain-biking trails. Purpose-built through epic wilderness of towering forest, granite boulders, river and lake, the 125km of free trails range from easy to extremely difficult. Bring your bike on Spirit of Tasmania or hire one in town.

Two-wheeled adventure not your style? Consider bushwalking in the nearby Blue Tier Regional Reserve (including another of those 60 Great Short Walks), or take an easy detour for golf at one of Barnbougle ’s three premium seaside courses.

Exercise done, it’s time to relax at Lake Derby’s wood-fired Floating Sauna . It has a glass wall that doesn’t steam up, so you’ll be soothed by the wilderness view. Start with dry heat, followed by even warmer steamy heat, then jump in the lake. Yes, it’s freezing in winter, but this Nordic-style hot and cold full-body invigoration makes you feel awesome!

Dine at another leading restaurant back in Launceston or, if you prefer something more laidback after a big day, head to Havilah . This wine bar’s small but mighty menu has snacky dishes such as cheese, charcuterie, lamb ribs and handmade pasta.

Spirited traveller road trips

Day 5: launceston to hobart.

Take your time on the 200km drive south to Hobart, pausing to sample Tasmania’s legendary whisky at the source. Be sure to buy your designated driver a special bottle for later.

Callington Mill distillery offers sales, tastings, tours, the chance to make your own single malt, and the best lunch in Oatlands. It opened recently in the town’s heritage mill precinct, which is worth exploring even if you’re not into whisky.

Other places to stop for a wee dram amid heritage architecture are Old Kempton Distillery , and the new (but centuries-old) home of pioneering Lark Distillery .

Your Hobart accommodation is the Old Bishop’s Quarters’ latest unique, self-contained offering, Maud’s Cottage . From the wood heater in an inglenook fireplace to the deck’s copper bath, it’s a comfortable, stylish winter haven.

Many dinner options are within walking distance. If you fancy an open fire try Hope and Anchor pub, which was established in 1807, or one of the new breed of beery good times, Hobart Brewing Company .

spirit of tasmania travel time

Day 6: Hobart

If it’s winter there’s snow on Hobart’s kunanyi/Mount Wellington , so drive up to build a snowman and throw snowballs. Or just enjoy a scenic bushwalk or mountain-bike ride, pausing for warming drinks and snacks half way up at little Lost Freight cafe. Consider returning to the summit tonight if the Aurora Australis is lighting up the sky.

While away some time at one or two of the city’s numerous museums. Mona and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery are always interesting, and winter is prime time for visiting Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum .

This recreation of the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition’s base has many fascinating period details, including the sound of howling wind like those explorers experienced on the icy continent.

Continue the Antarctic theme at Institut Polaire , meaning “polar institute” in French. Another of Gourmet Traveller ’s top five Tassie restaurants, this elegant white-and-grey space celebrates cool-climate ingredients and wine. Also on the menu is the house Süd Polaire (“south polar”) craft gin and vodka.

spirit of tasmania travel time

Day 7: Hobart to Devonport

Travel the 290km north to Devonport at a leisurely pace, perhaps stopping at another whisky hotspot such as Killara . It’s owned by Australia’s first second-generation distiller, Kristy Booth-Lark, daughter of Lark Distillery’s founders.

Lunch is at Clarendon Arms , an old English-style pub right at home in the heritage town of Evandale. Its vintage vibe, including the open fire and wooden furniture, makes this place wonderfully cosy. Tuck into dishes like scallop and fish pie or lamb curry and you’ll feel warm down to your toes.

11 Pros and Cons of Living in Tasmania in 2024

Exploring the pros and cons of living in Tasmania is essential for anyone considering a move to this stunning island.

As someone who’s wandered through Tasmania’s vast hiking trails and admired its cascading waterfalls in 2021, I’ve experienced firsthand the allure of its natural beauty.

This article will explore the various aspects of Tasmanian life, from the serene landscapes to the practicalities of everyday living.

Whether you’re drawn by the tranquil environment or curious about the logistics of island living, you’ll find valuable insights to guide your decision.

Let’s uncover what makes Tasmania a unique place to call home.

Pros and Cons of Living in Tasmania

Pros of living in tasmania, 1. natural beauty.

Tasmania’s natural beauty is truly a treasure. Its landscape offers a rich tapestry of ecological wonders that captivate all who explore it.

The island offers diverse natural attractions, from the rugged peaks of Cradle Mountain to the serene bays of Freycinet National Park.

The pristine beaches along the coast are perfect for relaxing days spent by the sea, while the towering mountains beckon hikers and climbers seeking thrilling adventures.

Additionally, Tasmania’s rivers wind through untouched forests and expansive valleys, providing spectacular settings for kayaking and fishing.

This variety makes Tasmania a haven for nature lovers and ensures that outdoor enthusiasts will find something to love in the island’s vast, wild landscapes.

2. Arts and Culture

Tasmania’s arts and culture scene is vibrant and integral to its identity.

Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is a contemporary and avant-garde expression cornerstone.

MONA, known for its unconventional and provocative exhibits, draws visitors from around the globe. It offers a cultural experience that challenges traditional notions of art and presentation.

Beyond the museum walls, Tasmania celebrates its cultural heritage through various festivals spanning the calendar.

These events showcase everything from local Tasmanian music and film to food and wine, reflecting the rich tapestry of the community’s creative spirit.

Towns and cities across the island buzz with live performances, gallery openings, and public art installations, demonstrating a burgeoning arts scene supporting established and emerging artists.

This thriving cultural ecosystem enriches the local community and attracts creative talents and art enthusiasts, contributing to Tasmania’s reputation as a hub for cultural tourism and artistic innovation.

Whether you love fine arts, music, or traditional crafts, Tasmania offers a dynamic and inspiring environment that celebrates artistic diversity and creativity.

3. Safety and Community

Tasmania’s reputation as one of the safest parts of Australia is well-founded, thanks to its notably low crime rates and close-knit communities.

The island’s tranquillity is one of its most appealing traits, allowing residents to enjoy a lifestyle free from the anxieties and disturbances that can be more common in larger urban centres.

This sense of security is bolstered by the solid communal bonds characteristic of Tasmanian towns and suburbs.

The community spirit in Tasmania is palpable, with neighbours frequently looking out for one another and local events bringing people together.

This high social cohesion fosters a welcoming environment where new residents are quickly embraced and included.

Community support extends beyond mere friendliness, as Tasmanians are known for their willingness to lend a hand and support their fellow islanders in times of need.

This atmosphere makes Tasmania a particularly appealing place for families and those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of big-city life. It enhances the overall quality of life for all residents.

The combination of safety and a supportive community network is a cornerstone of what makes a living in Tasmania uniquely rewarding.

4. Affordable Housing

In Tasmania, the allure of affordable housing stands out, especially compared to the soaring prices often found in mainland Australia’s larger cities.

This cost-effectiveness extends across the island, offering a range of housing options that are significantly more accessible to first-home buyers and attractive to retirees looking for a serene place to settle without the financial strain.

The lower cost of living in Tasmania makes it feasible for individuals and families to purchase property and allows for a lifestyle that requires less financial outlay for daily necessities.

This affordability extends to lower property taxes, utility costs, and general maintenance expenses, which can substantially impact monthly budgets.

For retirees, the appeal is to stretch pension funds further while enjoying a high quality of life in a picturesque setting.

For young families and first-time home buyers, it means the possibility of owning a home with enough space to grow, something that might be unattainable in more expensive markets.

This economic advantage is a significant factor driving the increasing interest in moving to Tasmania, as it offers scenic beauty and financial relief.

5. Laid-back Lifestyle

Tasmania’s laid-back lifestyle is one of its most cherished attributes, particularly appealing to those seeking refuge from the hectic pace of larger metropolitan areas.

This more relaxed tempo permeates everyday activities, from leisurely mornings at local cafes to unhurried strolls along the beach or quaint town centres.

In Tasmania, there is a shared understanding that life need not be rushed, and this philosophy can significantly enhance one’s quality of life.

The slower pace allows residents to engage more deeply with their surroundings and community, fostering stronger relationships and a greater appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

Reducing stress benefits mental health and promotes a happier, more balanced lifestyle. People find they have more time for hobbies, family, and self-care, contributing to overall well-being.

For many, the move to Tasmania is a deliberate choice to escape the relentless demand of urban schedules.

Here, the emphasis is on living well rather than living fast, which aligns perfectly with the desires of those looking to downshift their lives and prioritize personal fulfilment over perpetual busyness.

6. Accessibility

Despite its geographical separation from the Australian mainland, Tasmania boasts commendable accessibility that belies its island status.

Several airports serve the state, including those in Hobart, Launceston, and Devonport. These airports offer frequent flights to major cities across Australia.

This connectivity ensures that travel to and from Tasmania is convenient and efficient, making it a practical option for residents and visitors.

In addition to air travel, Tasmania is also accessible by sea. The Spirit of Tasmania ferries operate between Devonport and Melbourne, providing a scenic and practical alternative for those transporting vehicles or preferring a more leisurely journey to the mainland.

This service enhances the flexibility and ease with which residents can plan interstate trips for business, leisure, or family visits.

Within the island, the relatively small size and well-maintained infrastructure ensure that commuting times are short and that travel between towns and cities is straightforward.

Major roads are well-kept, and traffic congestion is rarely an issue, reducing daily commute times and allowing more time for personal or family activities.

This level of accessibility contributes significantly to the laid-back lifestyle Tasmanians enjoy and is a key factor in the appealing work-life balance reported by many residents.

Cons of Living in Tasmania

7. limited job opportunities.

One of the challenges of living in Tasmania is the limited job opportunities compared to larger Australian states.

The Tasmanian job market tends to be more restrictive, with fewer openings, particularly in specialized fields such as advanced technology, research, and specific corporate sectors.

This limitation is partly due to the state’s smaller population and more isolated economic environment, which doesn’t support the same level of industry diversity found on the mainland.

For those considering a move to Tasmania, this may necessitate a degree of flexibility regarding employment expectations.

Potential residents might need to consider broadening their career focus or even seeking opportunities in different but related fields.

For some, this could mean embracing more generalist roles or pivoting to more prevalent industries in Tasmania, such as tourism, agriculture, or public services, which tend to offer more stable employment prospects on the island.

Moreover, due to these constraints, the entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged in Tasmania. Individuals with a business mindset can find niches, start small enterprises catering to the local market, or take advantage of the growing tourism sector.

The state government often supports such initiatives through grants and resources to bolster local employment and economic diversification.

This environment offers a unique opportunity for creativity and innovation in career paths, although it comes with the challenge of a smaller professional network and fewer traditional career opportunities.

8. Geographical Isolation

Tasmania’s geographical isolation, while contributing to its unique charm and pristine natural environment, also brings specific challenges.

The island’s remoteness from mainland Australia can sometimes foster a sense of isolation among its residents, particularly those accustomed to larger cities’ bustling urban centres.

This sense of distance can affect both psychological well-being and practical aspects of daily life.

Moreover, the physical separation from the mainland invariably increases costs for various goods.

Items that are not produced locally must be transported over long distances by sea or air, which adds considerable transportation fees to their final cost.

This includes everyday essentials such as certain food items, consumer electronics, and other manufactured goods, which can be noticeably more expensive in Tasmania than in different parts of Australia.

This isolation also impacts the availability of some services and goods, which may not be as readily accessible as in more connected regions.

The additional freight costs can be a significant economic burden for businesses, and for consumers, it often means having fewer choices or waiting longer for products to arrive.

Despite these challenges, many Tasmanians find that the benefits of living in such a beautiful, tranquil setting outweigh the drawbacks of geographical isolation.

The community’s resilience and adaptability are reflected in local businesses and the emphasis on supporting local products and services, which not only helps mitigate some of the economic disadvantages but also fosters a strong sense of community among residents.

9. Cold Weather

Tasmania’s climate is distinctively cooler than most of Australia, which can be a significant adjustment for those relocating from warmer regions.

This cooler weather is due to its southern geographical position , bringing chillier winters and milder summers.

In winter months, in particular, temperatures can drop significantly, often accompanied by frost and occasionally snow, especially in elevated areas like the Central Highlands.

This colder climate influences daily life in several ways. Residents often need to invest in warmer clothing and better home insulation.

The need for heating systems to maintain comfort during the long winter months also means higher energy consumption and, consequently, increased utility bills.

However, the cooler temperatures also have their advantages.

Summers in Tasmania are generally more temperate and comfortable than the sometimes oppressive heat experienced on the mainland. This makes outdoor activities and sleeping conditions far more pleasant during summer.

Furthermore, the cooler climate is ideal for cultivating certain crops, such as apples and hops, which thrive in these conditions, bolstering Tasmania’s agricultural sector.

For those who appreciate a cooler climate, Tasmania offers a refreshing alternative to Australia’s typically warm weather.

Its distinct seasons also provide a picturesque backdrop throughout the year, from vibrant autumn leaves and snowy winter landscapes to mild, blooming springs and crisp summers.

This climate appeals particularly to those from colder regions or anyone seeking a respite from the heat of Australian summers.

10. Limited Services and Amenities

In Tasmania, particularly in rural and remote areas, access to services and amenities can be limited compared to larger urban centres.

This is a common characteristic of island living, where the spread-out populations and smaller towns sometimes justify or support different infrastructure and service provision levels found in bigger cities.

Residents in these areas might find healthcare options more restricted, with fewer local specialists and medical facilities.

Emergency services and healthcare require travelling to larger towns or even to the state capital, Hobart, for more comprehensive treatment or specialized care.

Similarly, educational opportunities, particularly at the tertiary level, may be less diverse, compelling students to move to larger cities or interstate for a broader range of options.

Shopping and entertainment options are also more limited in Tasmania’s rural areas.

While necessities are generally available, the variety and abundance of retail outlets in larger cities often need improvement.

This can mean fewer choices when shopping for clothing, electronics, and other non-essential goods.

Entertainment such as cinemas, restaurants, and cultural events are also less frequent.

However, this can foster a greater appreciation for local festivals and community-organized activities, which are significant in their own right.

Despite these challenges, many people find the trade-off worthwhile.

The quieter, slower pace of life, the close-knit community atmosphere, and the natural beauty of the surroundings often compensate for the lack of urban conveniences.

Moreover, this limitation can spur innovation and resilience among residents, who often find creative solutions to overcome these obstacles, enhancing individual and community self-sufficiency.

11. Cultural and Social Adjustment

The cultural and social adjustment can be significant for newcomers arriving in Tasmania from more cosmopolitan or densely populated urban areas.

Tasmania’s more laid-back and slower pace of life, while one of its charms, may initially feel limiting to those accustomed to the 24/7 availability and myriad options of larger cities.

The social scene in Tasmania, particularly outside of its larger cities like Hobart and Launceston, tends to be quieter, with fewer options for nightlife, dining, and entertainment.

Social gatherings and events may occur with a different frequency or diversity than in bigger cities, and the arts and culture scene, while vibrant, does not offer the same scale of continuous events or international exhibitions.

Moreover, the network of social interactions in smaller communities is often tightly knit, meaning integrating socially requires more time and effort.

Newcomers might find that breaking into established social circles takes patience and active participation in community life.

This can involve joining clubs, attending local events, or volunteering, which helps make connections and understand Tasmanian life’s local customs and nuances.

Adjusting to this different cultural and social rhythm can take time. However, once they acclimate, many find that the quality of social interactions and the depth of relationships formed can be advantageous.

The genuine connections and community spirit often compensate for the initial sense of a slower pace, providing a fulfilling and enriching living experience.
