What Are the Best and Worst Times to Visit St. Maarten?

The best time to visit Sint Maarten is between January and April. The reason for this is because this is the time of year when the weather is exceptionally good in St. Maarten. Between the months of January to April, there are also excellent and inexpensive rates on hotels as well as the opportunity to enjoy some of the exciting festivals taking place on the island.

In Saint Martin, depending on the time of year there can be a higher number of tourists on the island or even a higher chance of hurricanes occurring on the island. When visiting St. Maarten, it is good to take into consideration the time of year you are deciding to visit.

Tourists need at least three days to visit all the important places in St. Martin.

Tourists can spend their first day getting to know the French and Dutch sides of St. Maarten with a local guided tour that shows the main attractions on both sides of the border by foot, bike, or bus. Tourists can try one of the island’s outdoor adventures such as a zipline, a guided all-terrain vehicle ride to some of the island’s most beloved beaches, or even enjoy the different restaurants, bars, and casinos in the evening in towns such as Philipsburg, Maho Bay, and Simpson Bay.

Although it doesn’t rain every day, this roughly corresponds to the Atlantic hurricane season, from the 1st of June to the 30th of November. This time of the year is not the best time to travel to St. Maarten because of the severe hurricanes that have struck the island in the past that have caused people to have to evacuate the island. The best time to visit St. Maarten is from December to April, when the weather is warm and sunny with relatively low humidity.

Lying in the Eastern Caribbean and part of the Lesser Antilles chain, the island enjoys a tropical climate. The island is a popular destination year-round, with beautiful beaches, a lively calendar of cultural events, and the added bonus that visitors can move freely between two distinctly different cultures.

Visiting St. Maarten by Season

Grand Case Beach

Summer in St. Maarten, from June to August, is a time of hot, humid weather. Temperatures average 83.9°F (28.8°C) and the amount of rainfall increases as summer progresses; August receives about 3.9 inches (100mm) of rain.

Short, sharp showers tend to fall in the afternoons, clearing the air. Occasionally, storm systems can move through, bringing more consistent rain, but it’s always warm. This is a busy time for domestic tourism but less appealing to anyone who isn’t used to intense humidity.

September, October, and November in St. Maarten tend to be hot and humid. There’s still a chance of storms passing through during this time. Expect average daily highs of 89°F (29°C), although it can feel hotter due to the increased humidity. Rainfall varies from 5.5 inches (140mm) in September to 5.9 inches (150mm) in November, the wettest month.

Rain doesn’t deter the locals from celebrating St. Maarten’s Day, November 11, marking the date when Columbus “discovered” the island. This is a time of cultural events, live music, and feasting on traditional dishes like johnny cakes, fried chicken, and salt fish.

Food in St. Maarten

December, January, and February are peak season in St. Maarten. The humidity is lower and there’s less chance of rainfall. Average daily highs are around 79°F (26°C) and rainfall is low; just 3.7 inches (95mm) in December, for example, falling to 2 inches (50mm) by February.

The island is busy with cultural events around this time. February is Carnival month on the French side of the island, with lavish parades and parties.

March brings the Heineken Regatta, one of the big events in the yachting calendar, as well as the SXM Music Festival, five days and nights of live bands and parties.

March and April are still busy months in St. Maarten, particularly around Easter and Spring Break. May is the shoulder season, as the drier months shift into hotter, more humid weather.

This is a time of celebration in St. Maarten, the Dutch side of the island, as Carnival usually falls in mid-April, which means two weeks of music, parades, dancing, and bacchanals.

Expect daily highs of 80.5°F (26.9°C) in April, increasing slowly in May. Spring is arguably the best time to go to St. Maarten; March has the lowest rainfall of any month, averaging 1.8 inches (45mm).

When Is Rainy Season?

September, October, and November are the wettest months in St. Maarten, but this doesn’t mean fall is a bad time to travel. Rain usually comes in the form of short, intense downpours and thunderstorms, and you’ll still enjoy plenty of sunshine.

When Is High Season?

High season in St. Maarten is in the cooler winter months of January, February, and March. Expect the island to be busier around this time, with the restaurants and beach bars buzzing. There are plenty of beaches in St. Maarten , though, so there’s never a sense of feeling crowded.

When Is Shoulder Season?

May and early June, as well as mid-November until mid-December, are regarded as the shoulder season months. Some savvy travelers say the shoulder seasons are the best times to visit St. Maarten, with fewer crowds but a more relaxed atmosphere than in high season.

When Is Low Season?

Low season is during the more humid summer and fall months, from July to October. The island is quieter during this time, and some restaurants, shops, and attractions may close so the owners can take their own vacations.

The island of St. Maarten has two airports. The Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) located in St. Maarten serves as the primary airport for the entire island. Most major airlines fly there, including American Airlines and United.

The airport is famous for the low flying planes over Maho Beach , a site to be seen, but best watched from a distance to avoid the dangers of jet blast.

There is also a small airport on the French side called L’Espérance Airport, also referred to as Grand Case Airport , primarily for small charter flights.

What to Pack for St. Maarten/ St. Martin

A St. Maarten/ St. Martin vacation is all about sea, sand, and fun in the sun. There’s no such thing as enough swimsuits, beach cover-ups , light t-shirts, shorts, and sundresses . So leave the jeans at home, bring your summer best and make room for these items when packing for your St. Maarten/ St. Martin beach vacation :

• Light, breathable clothing
• Sunscreen (at least SPF 30), I prefer Sun Bum’s reef-safe sunscreen

As mentioned, both sides of the island have their own cultural vibe with the Dutch side generally considered the party zone, while the French side is more reserved. Where you stay will ultimately depend on budget and personal preference, here are a few recommendations to experience the island’s charm.

Phillipsburg

St. Maarten’s capital, Phillipsburg, has one of the best shopping experiences in the Caribbean and is a magnet for tourists with its duty-free shops, and buzzing restaurants.

The Dutch side has plenty of accommodation options after a long day of shopping and sightseeing, The Villas on Great Bay are simply exceptional.

However, Phillipsburg has some affordable hotels too including Holland House Beach Hotel , Sea Palace , and the Horizon View Beach Hotel . These are all beach-front properties located just minutes from the heart of the capital.

Simpson Bay

This corner of the island is the center of entertainment and nightlife. Top-notch marinas, restaurants, clubs, and bars are just a part of the big picture. If you’re feeling lucky, casinos are always open.

All that fun can be tiring, luckily hotels overlooking the Bay offer excellent relaxation. One of them is La Vista Beach Resort , a place where you can feel like a king, but still, stay on a budget.

Other popular accommodations include the Simpson Bay Resort Marina & Spa , a sprawling complex on the marina with spacious suites and villas, and my St. Maarten base, the Atrium Beach Resort , a newly-renovated resort and spa with luxury vibes.

The more extravagant part of the island, Orient Bay, is a popular area for luxury-seeking tourists. The island’s finest beach, excellent dining scene, and top-notch resorts are the highlights of this area.

There’s really no science behind choosing the right hotel in Orient Bay. Each one is excellent for its own reasons. However, Oyster Bay Beach Resort and Hotel La Plantation have, by far, some of the friendliest staff on the “Friendly Island.” A fan of boutique hotels will surely enjoy the stay at the Princess Heights; a royal accommodation with good value!

Getting around st. maarten/ st. martin.

Taxis are plentiful in the island of St. Maarten/St. Martin and operate between the two capitals. Unlike in North America, taxis here operate on a fixed fee, usually paid in cash; and those on the Dutch side only accept U.S. dollars. Always agree on the price before entering the car.

MiniBus/MiniVans

There is a privately-owned minibus (passenger vans) system that can connect you to Philipsburg and Marigot. The minibusses run through major areas of the island with fares between $1 or $3 USD, depending on the destination.

Although the minibus system is a great way to see the island, be aware the bus schedule can be unpredictable, so it’s best for those travelers without a time-sensitive itinerary.

There are several rental car companies at Princess Juliana Airport. Since the island is small, renting a car gives you the freedom to explore the whole island. But keep in mind the island is mountainous and most of St. Martin and St. Maarten roads are narrow, so if you’re renting, opt for a car on the smaller side.

Grand Case, the small, secluded town on the French side is a source of gourmet cuisine and a foodie’s paradise. High-quality restaurants define this part of the island. If you want to stay somewhere you’ll always be able to get a quick bite, Grand Case is for you.

With many restaurants sprinkled along the seashore, it will be tough to choose which one to try. Stroll the endless sandy beaches or stop for a bite at one of the town’s many luxe restaurants or seaside open grill barbecue-style joints known as the LoLo’s. The rustic locals spot Rib Shack lolo N°6 near the Grand Case Beach Pier is one of my favs.

Pinel Island

For a unique day trip, take a ferry or water taxi over to Pinel Island , an uninhabited piece of land off the French coast that’s great for swimming, snorkeling or getting away from it all. You can rent a beach chair and umbrella and soak in the sun or explore the tranquil waters. It can be busy on weekends here, so if possible, aim for a weekday trip.

Loterie Farm

This nature sanctuary is over 100 acres of zip lines, hiking trails, and lush hideaways. It’s also where you go to begin the hike among the mango and mahogany trees up Pic Paradis. Once you’ve exhausted yourself, enjoy the pool area or a food and wine experience at the restaurant.

Marigot Market

The French capital is full of things to do, from shopping and dining to tropical walking tours and historical site seeing. Only four streets wide, it’s easy to explore the area’s beautiful colonial houses, quaint cafes, and handicrafts open market.

Marigot Market is a traditional souvenir market with local charm: haggle, explore the seaside, and eat yummy food. Shopping here gets you the opportunity to meet the local people, hear their stories, and help out the economy. It’s sustainable tourism at its finest.

Fort St. Louis

Overlooking the Marigot Bay stands a fortress dating back to 1789. The fort once served as the defensive point for the harbor warehouses. Rebuilt a few times over the centuries, Fort St. Louis is now a preserved landmark where you can learn a lot about the island history. You’ll come for the lovely building, but you’ll stay for the story behind it.

Rainforest Adventures St. Maarten –  Rockland Estate

For the adrenaline seeker, check out Rockland Estate from one of St. Maarten’s highest point. The eco-adventure park features mountain surfing and gliding, explorer chairlift, and the world’s steepest zip line dubbed “The Flying Dutchman.” The zip line is over 1,000 feet in the air with 2,800 feet of cable going down the line in 45 seconds. You’ll forget about fear once you see the beautiful landscape underneath you.

Front Street & The Boardwalk

A major shopping and strolling destination, this beach-front stretch runs parallel to the sea in Philipsburg. It can get crowded, especially when the cruise ships  are in port, but it’s a lively place perfect for purchasing duty-free goods (liquor, jewelry, etc.) at huge discounts.

Cappuccino Bar Restaurant : Located on the Dutch side, this diner-style eatery is open 24 hours a day. Kick back with some classic comfort food and take advantage of the big-screen t.v.s in a tropical, open-air setting. One meal was not enough; we found ourselves going back several times during our week-long trip!

Pineapple Pete’s : is the perfect place to mix and mingle, play some pool, and enjoy mouth-watering delicacies.

Sunset Bar & Grill : Adjacent to the Princess Juliana Airport, this beach-front bar and grill was the perfect place for us to enjoy some local seafood, a few cocktails, and safely watch the famous SXM and Maho Beach plane landings and take-offs.

Buccaneer Bar : A lively, beach-front bar and restaurant, this casual spot was our perfect happy hour spot right along the waterfront!

Guavaberry : What trip to the Caribbean is complete without rum? Be sure to sample the island’s native liqueur, Guavaberry, made from rum, cane sugar, and local, wild guava berries. You can easily pick up a bottle at the Guavaberry Emporium  or one of the duty-free shops.

This 5-star beach resort offers cabana rental and provides complimentary use of non-motorized water sports equipment such as double kayaks, hobby cats, and snorkel gear. The resort has a pool, spa, tennis courts with a resident tennis pro who offers lessons, and a fitness center offering yoga and Pilates. The concierge is available to arrange activities such as a champagne sunset cruise. This island of many names is known to me as “The Island We Were Supposed to Honeymoon On”! Many years ago, we’d made plans to spend several days in St. Martin when my (now ex) husband and I were to be married. Long story short, our circumstances changed and we instead spent the night in Boston at a luxury hotel. That was lovely, however, it can’t compare to St. Martin! Really lovely to learn more about St Maarten and St Martin, as they are a destination I’ve not read much about previously. Seems like a really interesting place with many different cultural / language influences from the UK, Netherlands, France, and Spain! The landscapes and seascapes look spectacular and good to know a car rental is a good way to travel, as that’s a favourite for us. I’ll look out for that guavaberry liqueur!

Here’s my comment: It’s fascinating. It is geographically close to America, but it belongs to France & Netherlands. So they use both Euro & USD! It’s so tiny and still owned by 2 countries! It’s intriguing. Indeed it is a bit like Belgium which is also half Dutch & half French. It is considered the Culinary Capital of the Caribbean? Wow. That’s promising. Yoda guy movie exhibit sounds interesting. I really wouldn’t miss the guavaberry-flavored rum!

St Maarten and St Martin although similar sounding seem quite different. A very nice guide detailing all possible thoughts. While in St Maarten sampling a few of the 50+ flavors of rum would be really nice since I used to be a rum drinker in my younger days. Checking out the mega-yachts of Simpson Bay lagoon should be fun as well. Wouldn’t mind checking out the nudist resort Club Orient. Watching the view from Pic Paradis and exploring Fort Louis should be a good experience in St Martin.

When you think of St. Martin, you might think of beaches and tasty culinary dishes. However, that is not all that St. Martin has to offer. It has been in the top 20 destinations worldwide by Tripadvisor. Moreover, for thrillseekers, it has the steepest zipline in the world!

May, June, November, and December are the best months to visit St. Martin. These months have an average temperature of 85 F (29 C). April to May is popular for attending events like the Carnival, while March is great for the SXM Festival. Visit in September to avoid crowds and get a 4% price drop. 

St. Martin has plenty to offer each month. However, in some months, the weather may feel unbearable, or it may be easier to avoid crowds in another. That is why this article looks at each month and what they offer. 

Worst Time to Visit St. Martin

The worst time to visit St. Martin is from December to April. During these months, flights and hotel prices increase dramatically because of the tourist peak. 

Even though December to April has beautiful and comfortable weather in the low 80s, the prices may deter you from visiting. However, May to June and November to December offer pleasant weather with lower prices. 

If the price increase is a deterrent, you may want to also avoid August through October as they can be bad for traveling to St. Martin. These months are peak hurricane season, so you may experience frequent rainfall. 

October receives the most amount of rainfall at 2.4 inches and typically has 14 days of rain. Therefore, visiting in October is not ideal either.

Cheapest Time to Visit St. Martin

Late September is the cheapest time to visit St. Martin. However, you may need to take standby flights or limit other travel expenses to ensure you stay within budget.

While it can be difficult to travel on a budget in St. Martin, a solo traveler can spend $145 per day and get a one-star hotel for $64. You can book a vacation rental for $80 per night, though it is best to do so in advance.

Those that want to visit St. Martin as a family of four should save enough to spend an average of $455 per day. However, it is needed to either book everything in advance or limit your spending.

If you are looking to save the most money, avoid traveling to St. Martin during peak tourist season. The peak tourist season months are from mid-December to mid-April.

January tends to have pleasant weather in St. Martin. The daily high temperature is 80 F (27 C), while its daily low temperature is 71 F (22 C). 

While January has excellent weather, mainly in the 80s, with little rain, there are not many festivals and events. However, there are plenty of fun activities that you can do in January.

Whether you want to visit popular tourist attractions at the beach or go down the zip line, there is something fun to do. The only problems you may encounter in January are the prices and the abundance of tourists.

In February, you have the opportunity to experience the Arrowroot Festival and the Carnival. The Carnival starts in January and lasts until February, allowing you to watch pageants and have a barbecue!

March: SXM Festival

If you are looking for a music festival to attend in St. Martin, March will be the best time to visit. In March, the SXM Festival gives you memories of a lifetime, taking you through St. Martin’s beaches, villas, and various boats.

Since the SXM Festival takes place in March, those not interested in attending it may want to visit another month. Many people start to travel to St. Martin to attend the SXM Festival, which cause increased prices.

If you are on a budget, May might be one of the best times to visit as you can enjoy free activities. However, you will need to visit on certain days to participate in them. There is Ecotourism Day and Fete du Nautisme. 

Ecotourism Day and Fete du Nautisme typically take place on the second or third weekend of May and will be a blast to attend. You can take free horseback tours, scuba diving, hiking, kayaking, and more!

The Ultimate St. Martin Travel Guide

When it came to where to vacation in the Caribbean this spring , my husband and I decided on St. Martin. We were looking for something easy to get to from the states, with a gorgeous hotel that we could post up at for some much needed R&R. We were also looking for something baby-friendly, since we wanted to bring our little 11-month-old boy along, too! St. Martin turned out to be the best getaway for our little family. Only a few hours away from Miami, it’s an easy one stop from most places in the USA, or a direct from the big airports! Where to stay in St. Martin

The jetset pick: belmond la samanna .

The Belmond La Samanna is the nicest resort on St. Martin. It was built to feel like Greece, but in the tropics, and is characterized by gorgeous Mediterranean architecture and lush tropical foliage, with colorful details and bouganvillea that makes you feel like you’re somewhere between Italy and Greece. Belmond never misses, and La Samanna is one of their best resorts. It’s exclusive and boasts one of the best beaches in St. Martin, or even the entire Caribbean, on Baie Longue. There are 83 beautifully-decorated ocean-view guest rooms, suites, and multi-bedroom villas, and all of the facilities here are colorful, chic, tropical, and make for an absolutely perfect Caribbean vacation. 

We stayed in a oceanview suite with terrace . All of the rooms at La Samanna, A Belmond Hotel, St Martin have stunning private balconies and some even have a plunge pool. I don’t think it’s necessary, however, since the beach is right there! And the main pools on property are SO beautiful (and kid-friendly!).

What is the best time of year to visit St. Martin?

We traveled to St. Martin in May, which we found to be absolutely perfect weather. The best time to visit is the shoulder season between high season (December through April) and the hurricane season which starts in June/July and goes until November. 

How long does it take to get to St. Martin?

It’s a four hour direct flight from JFK, a 4 hour from Charlotte, or a 3 hour flight from Miami. 

Is St. Martin safe?

We found St. Martin to be very safe, it’s known as the friendly island, and you feel that right when you touch down at the airport. It was easy to get a taxi and the taxi operators were the best ambassadors for their friendly island! They were awesome. 

The main tourist areas of St. Martin are generally safe, but you should take sensible precautions as a traveler. Don’t wear too flashy of belongings while walking around in public places, etc. 

Is St. Martin baby-friendly?

Yes! St. Martin is one of the most kid-friendly destinations in the Caribbean, and a great destination to travel with little ones due to its calm beaches, soft sand, kid-friendly restaurants, and warm weather (we also didn’t experience any wind on the beach – at least in May – like we did when were in Anguilla in March!) We had the best time in St. Martin traveling with our baby. The hotel ( Belmond La Samanna ) felt extremely safe and easy to navigate with a baby!

What to do in St. Martin

Pinel Island – Head to the Yellow Beach Beach Club: get the lobster fresh from the ocean! SO GOOD! 

Mullet Bay is a secluded and spacious beach on St. Martin. You can rent chairs and umbrellas from the snack bars on the south side, or go to the secluded northern end for a little privacy. I’d recommend getting a reservation ahead of time at Kalatua Beach Club. 

Mykonos Club

If you’re looking for an outdoor party scene, or visiting on a holiday like New Years Eve, this is your spot. Mykonos is set amongst the crashing waves and incoming planes on the shore of Maho Beach. The focal point of the club is their zero-entry pool making every night feel like the ultimate pool party.

Maho Beach to see the airplanes land in St Martin

You’ve probably seen videos of Maho Beach when looking up St. Martin. Maho is a unique beach in St. Maarten, where travelers flock to experience the thrilling rush of airplanes flying extremely close over your head! When to Go in St. Maarten/St. Martin

Hotels on charge their highest rates during the peak winter season, from mid-December to mid-April. Christmas week rates may double those tariffs. You should make reservations months in advance for Christmas and February, especially over Presidents' Day weekend. School spring breaks are also busy family times.

The off-season  runs roughly mid-April to mid-December (though exact dates vary according to the property). Even though August can be a popular month for vacationing Europeans, it's one big summer sale: Most hotels, inns, condos, and villas slash their prices 20% to 50%. The beaches are less crowded and many top lodgings and restaurants shutter for one, even 2 months as the owners take their own vacation or perform necessary renovations. Be sure to request a room away from noise if the hotel remains open during construction. I provide closing dates wherever possible, but visitors should double-check before booking.

High season features a temperate climate, rarely exceeding 90°F (32°C), with lower humidity and the famed cooling trade winds blowing in from the northeast. It's ideal beach weather, with the occasional cloudy day. Usually rain showers are brief: Islanders call them "liquid sunshine."

Rainy season runs from late May to mid-November. This doesn't mean it rains for days at a time or even every day. But this also roughly corresponds to the official Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30. Fortunately, satellite surveillance provides enough advance warning to take precautions and, rarely, evacuate.

Hurricanes -- The northeastern Caribbean has seen its share of destructive hurricanes; the latest to have an impact in this region was Hurricane Omar, which in 2008 eroded beaches and blew down beach shacks in the Maho Bay area in St. Maarten and also caused beach erosion on Anguilla's West End. Fortunately, modern technology and satellite surveillance provide plenty of advance warning for impending storms. Hurricane season officially begins in June and ends in late November, but high hurricane season in this neck of the woods is the month of September. A number of resorts use this time (early fall) to close for renovations, especially on St. Barts. If you are caught in a hurricane or tropical storm during your stay, follow the instructions of officials (especially in the event of an evacuation to higher ground). Keep in mind that low-lying areas may be prone to flooding, and the seas may have dangerous rip currents even after a hurricane has passed. Wonderful island, which we were allowed to visit 2 times on a cruise! We fell in love! In the French part where we were on that day it was pouring rain, St Maarten was the most beautiful sunshine????? A beautiful island with lovely people!

St. Maarten/St. Martin has 37 stunning beaches , all of which are public. Regulations vary according to the beach and which side of the island governs it. Make sure to check in advance regarding rules for swimming, surfing, hiking , topless sunbathing and nude swimming.

The French side officially discourages beach nudity, though it is tolerated — and Club Orient on Orient Bay encourages it. Regardless of which side of the island you’re on, please be aware of other people, families with children and private homes.

Business hours vary with the season. During high season, stores are likely to be open all day.

Regular hours on the Dutch side are from 8:30 a.m. until 6 p.m., and shops are generally open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m. Small groceries tend to stay open until 8 or 9 p.m.

Stores on the French side open from 9 a.m. to approximately 7 p.m. but close for “extended lunch breaks,” approximately from noon to 2 p.m.

Most stores close on Sunday, though some may open if there are cruise ships in port.

St. Maarten/St. Martin has a subtropical climate with trade winds from the Caribbean Sea. The temperature averages around 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius). Hurricane season begins on June 1 and ends November 30. Sea temperature peaks at approximately 79 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit (26 to 29 degrees Celsius) around February and is coldest around August, ranging from 72 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 24 degrees Celsius).

ST MAARTEN CURRENCY & CREDIT CARDS

Although US dollars are accepted almost everywhere on both sides, the two official currencies are the euro on the French side and the Netherlands Antillean guilder (called naf or florin) on the Dutch side . You can change money at banks and change points, like Moneygram or Western Union, but be aware many places do not accept traveler’s checks, checks from foreign banks or American Express. Most establishments will accept other major credit cards.

CUSTOMS/DUTY/ IMMIGRATION

Although many tourist destinations claim to be duty-free, St. Maarten/St. Martin is the only destination in the West Indies that can truly claim a tax-free status; and there are no particular customs procedures. Products for personal use (tobacco, cameras and video cameras) are permitted in small quantities without being subject to specific procedures or taxes.

With no customs duties, VAT or other indirect taxes to pay, the island offers unbeatable prices on many items. Make sure to consult the authorities in your country to learn the conditions regarding taking items home after your visit. For EU residents: Travelers 16 years and older are allowed 200 cigarettes/50 cigars, two liters of wine and one liter of liquor (over 22 percent alcohol) or two liters of drinks (under 22 percent alcohol).

IMMIGRATION

All visitors require a valid passport, and certain countries may also require a visa. European, US and Canadian visitors require a valid passport and a return or continuing ticket. Canadian residents require a landing permit in addition to a valid passport and a return or continuing ticket.

An ideal island for kids, St. Maarten/St. Martin offers a wide variety of activities to make children of all ages happy. Visit one of the 37 beautiful beaches , introduce them to a new water sport or explore exotic nature reserves . Many activities are ocean oriented, like snorkeling , diving , jet-skiing, parasailing and island boat tours .

Discover the beauty of the marine park with its colorful fish, turtles, rays and corals. Scuba diving centers have experienced divers to instruct and certify children 10 years or older. Windsurfing and surfing lessons for children are available on the calm waters of Galion Bay and Orient Beach . Sailing lessons on real racing yachts are accessible for kids age 12 or older, and no prior sailing experience is required. Guided kayak tours in the mangroves are also fantastic.

Emilio Wilson Park , located in Dutch Cul de Sac, is a great park for children to play. Seaside Nature Park in Cole Bay has horseback/pony rides for all levels, and a discovery farm with all miniature farm animals and a small playground. Special zip lines at Loterie Farm near Pic Paradis on the French side are great for kids, too.

Many hotels and resorts have babysitting services and kids’ clubs with professional staff to supervise children. VIP babysitting services allow infants, children, teens and young adults to have an opportunity to create, learn, discover and enjoy the beauty of the Caribbean in the privacy of their villa or mega-yacht , and are available days, evenings and overnight stays but must be booked well in advance.

St. Maarten/St. Martin is a melting pot with over 100 different nationalities. On the French side , French is spoken in government departments and schools. On the Dutch side , Dutch is used in government departments and some schools, but English is widely spoken everywhere. Spanish, Creole and Papiamento are also widely spoken on both sides.

Both sides have a variety of nature parks, protected beaches and waters. Environmental protection and the development of commercial activities work together; dive clubs and tour companies offer excursions in the protected waters of the Réserve Naturelle ( French side ). All partners are committed to respecting the environment, defending environmental regulations and educating about all the natural heritage sites. Some of these protected sites are The Tiki Hut and Seaside Nature Park, Pinel Island , Tintamarre , Orient Bay and Creole Rock . Sea turtles are protected animals on the island, and the St. Maarten Nature Foundation Sea Turtle Watch Group has initiatives for their conservation. Both governments may forbid certain activities in certain areas (such as hiking , motorized transportation and anchorage).

You may bring pets to the island, but first consult your hotel or host to ensure your pet is welcome. Animals are temporarily admitted with a health certificate dated no more than 10 days before visit and a record of inoculations, including a rabies shot administered no more than 30 days before travel. On the French side , small dogs on a leash are welcome in most places but are not allowed on beaches .

Approximately 41,000 people live on St. Maarten and 36,000 on St. Martin, for a combined total of 77,000.

St. Maarten/St. Martin is a peaceful mix of Roman Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Baptist, Anglican, Methodist, Jehovah’s Witness, Seventh-day Adventist, Rastafarian and Hindu communities. Due to widespread immigration and the multiethnic culture of the island, many religious communities coexist side by side. Religion plays an important role in daily life, so it’s important to respect everyone.

Travelers are always advised to take safety precautions. It is discouraged to walk alone in quiet or deserted streets, especially at night. Only marked taxis booked through a reputable service should be used. Valuables should be locked in your hotel ’s safe. Do not leave handbags or other valuables unattended in cars or on beaches . Although all 37 beaches are public, keep in mind there are no lifeguards present. It is ideal to use credit cards and not carry large amounts of cash.

St Maarten Airports

St Maarten boasts two airports. The main international airport is Princess Juliana International Airport on Dutch Side Sint Maarten, that carries airport code SXM. This airport is the main gateway for international carriers like Air France, Delta, KLM, United Airlines and connects to some of the world’s most important hubs , as well as much of the Caribbean region. From Princess Juliana Airport, taxis are readily available at all times. In addition, local buses (mini-vans) leave in the direction of  Simpson Bay / Philipsburg and Cupecoy.

By renting a car, you can easily explore the island. Drive through mountain areas and lush tropical forests. It is easy to find your own favorite spot in the sun with a rental car.

Requirements

To rent a car, you must be at least 18 years old and have held your driver’s license for at least one year. Seatbelts and child seats are mandatory. Payment must be done with a major credit card.

Speed Limit

Town and city: 50 kmh (30 mph).

Traffic Restrictions

Drive on the right side of the road. Talking on cell phones and drinking are prohibited while driving. Driver must always wear a seatbelt.

There are stations throughout both sides of the island, and many are open 24 hours. Dutch side typically is cash only.

Parking is normally easy to find, and most hotels and resorts offer secure parking.

Minibuses cover most areas of the island. Although there is no fixed schedule, there are dedicated bus stops. Simply wait on the side of the road or at a bus stop and raise your hand to alert the driver when a minibus arrives. Buses generally accept euros and US dollars.

St. Maarten / St. Martin does not have a freshwater source; tap water comes exclusively from the desalination plant. Water has become very expensive and should be used sparingly for the sake of the environment. Spring and mineral water are available for purchase everywhere.

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Martin and St. Maarten is May and June or between November and mid-December. These select weeks are times when hotels advertise their best rates. The island's weather is pleasant year-round, but these are times when rain showers are less likely. Summer and early fall are not good for a vacation; many hotels close in this offseason and there's a chance of hurricanes. Also avoid visiting in winter and early spring (mid-December to April) if you can. That's when St. Martin and St. Maarten milks its wealthy vacationers.

What You Need to Know

The official language In St. Martin it's French. Meanwhile, St. Maarten's official language is both Dutch and English. Confused yet? Don't worry – English is widely spoken throughout.

How to say "watch out" in Dutch You should definitely go to Maho Bay to see a few 747s land at the neighboring Princess Juliana International Airport. But  uitkijken ! This can be a scary, noisy and windy experience.

How to say "Live and Let Live" in French St. Martin's beaches are well-known for their  vivre et laisser vivre  philosophy on swimsuits (in other words, expect to see a lot of bare chests and bottoms).

How to Save Money in St. Martin - St. Maarten

Don't tip extra  You'll see some restaurants have put an extra 15-percent "tax" on the bill that the wait staff might neglect to tell you is their service charge. Don't tip extra unless your service was really exceptional.

Email, don't phone  Making a call from the French side to the Dutch side, and vice versa, is considered an international call. Some businesses will have two numbers (to help you avoid this particular nuisance), but if not, attempt to make restaurant reservations and book island tours by email.

Take the bus  Things move at a more leisurely pace in the Caribbean, so take advantage of that by taking the bus to the top tourist sites. There's no set schedule for drop-off and pick-ups, but you'll get where you want to go for about $1.50 one-way.

Culture & Customs

A true "Tale of Two Cities,"   the island of St. Martin and St. Maarten is proud of its dual heritage and customs. There is no physical border between the French and Dutch territories and people and goods may travel freely between both sides of the island. The Dutch side's official currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder (ANG) while the official currency of the French side is the euro (EUR). However, the United States dollar is widely accepted, as are most major credit cards.

What to Eat

Bring your appetite to St. Martin/St. Maarten, because you'll most assuredly put it to good use. Fresh seafood is often the star of many menus here (it is an island, after all), but there is a rich variety of cuisines to be found, from high-end French to Lebanese to Italian to traditional barbecue. Typical Creole dishes often include conch, goat and oxtail. You'll also want to try the island's national liqueur, Guavaberry, made from rum, cane sugar and local, wild guavaberries. A bottle also makes a great souvenir to take home.

Some visitors say the island's dining is some of the best in the Caribbean, especially in the Grand Case area on the French side. Bistrot Caraibes in Grand Case consistently earns rave reviews from diners, who praise both its food and service. The restaurant's signature dish is lobster, a big favorite with repeat diners. La Villa Restaurant , another Grand Case mainstay, is equally praised for its French-Caribbean menu and exceptional service.

If you're looking for a casual meal, try one of the  lolos , or open-air restaurants on the beach (outdoor cooking on large barbecues is very popular here). In the evening, live music is often a staple at these local spots. Recent travelers especially enjoyed the bars and grills along Simpson Bay. The Palms was a particular favorite thanks to its Caribbean and international menu. Popular dishes include the jerk chicken and curry chicken. Izi Ristorant Italiano was also a hit for those passing through Simpson Bay for its variety of Italian classics.

The dual-nation island is just as safe as other island getaways. Crowds are denser in St. Maarten, however, so travelers should exercise common sense when moving around the tourist areas; leave your valuables at home, and only carry small bills. St. Martin and St. Maarten's visitors should also be mindful of the jet blast when watching the planes take off and land at  Maho Bay . Blasts of sand can be powerful depending on where you're standing, and spectators should prepare by bringing a brimmed hat and umbrella, in addition to plenty of sunscreen (the strong winds can make it hard to determine when you're sunburned). For that matter, sunscreen and a hat should always be worn, since the island is located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Equator, receiving the full force of the sun. A good pair of sunglasses is also a good idea. 

Getting Around St. Martin - St. Maarten

The best way to get around St. Martin and St. Maarten is in a rental car. But really, outside of walking, just about any means of navigating between the French and Dutch sides of the island is manageable. Having a car will allow you more mobility and you'll find reasonable rental rates. Agencies are clustered on the outskirts of Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), located in St. Maarten. Unfortunately, traffic can be pretty heinous on both sides. The island buses also cater to tourists and are fairly cheap to ride. If you don't like the idea of waiting on a bus, consider splurging on a taxi. And if you're feeling adventurous you might want to use a scooter; there's nothing like feeling the sea breeze in your hair – ahem, helmet.

Entry & Exit Requirements

You can travel freely between this island's French and the Dutch sides, but you will need to present a passport that has at least six months remaining validity (for the French side) when you first arrive. A valid passport is all that is required to enter the Dutch side. You might also be asked to present your return ticket, proof of sufficient funds for your trip and proof of lodging. Moscow metro to be more tourist-friendly

For many years now, Moscow has lagged behind St. Petersburg when it comes to making life easy for tourists, especially where getting around the city is concerned. Whereas the northern capital installed English-language maps, signs and information points throughout its subway system in the late 2000s, the Russian capital’s metro remained a serious challenge for foreign visitors to navigate.

Recent visitors to Moscow may have noticed some signs that change is afoot, however. In many stations of the Moscow subway, signs have appeared on the floor – with large lettering in Russian and English – indicating the direction to follow in order to change lines. Previously, foreign visitors using the Moscow metro had to rely solely upon deciphering the Russian-language signs hanging from the ceilings.

However, this new solution has a significant drawback. “The floor navigation is visible only to a small stream of people – fewer than three people per meter. During peak hours, this navigation will simply not be noticed,” said Konstantin Trofimenko, Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Studies.

One of the biggest problems for tourists in the Russian capital remains the absence of English translations of the names of subway stations in the station vestibules and on platforms. The Department of Transportation in Moscow has not commented yet as to when this problem will be solved. However, Latin transliterations of station names can already be found in the subway cars themselves.

At four of the central stations – Okhotny Ryad, Teatralnaya, Ploshchad Revolyutsii, Lubyanka and Kuznetsky Most – the city authorities have now installed colorful stands at the exits with schematic diagrams of the station’s concourse and surrounding area, which provide information about the main attractions and infrastructural facilities.

The schematic diagrams are the work of British specialists from the City ID and Billings Jackson Design firms, who have already implemented successful projects in New York and London.

According to Alexei Novichkov, expert at the Design Laboratory at the Higher School of Economics, the design of these information booths raises no objections: The color solutions, font, layout and icons are consistent with international standards.

However, the stands do have some shortcomings. “Many questions are raised about the fact that the developers of these maps did not apply orientation to the north, and have provided layouts of the surrounding areas with respect to the exits,” says Novichkov. “A system like that is used for road navigators, but most of the ‘paper’ guides and maps are oriented strictly to north. The subway map is also oriented to north, so people may become confused.”

Muscovites and foreign visitors are generally positive about these navigation elements, with most of them citing the numbered exits from the subway as the most useful feature.

The fact is that many Moscow subway stations have several exits. One of the busiest central stations of the Moscow subway in particular, Kitay-Gorod, has more than a dozen exits. Previously, these exits were differentiated from each other only with signs in Russian referring to the names of streets and places of interest to which they led – making it easy for tourists and those with poor navigation skills to get confused.

Now, when making an appointment to meet a friend, instead of struggling to find the right spot when they tell you: “I'll meet you at the exit to Solyanka Street,” you can just propose to meet under a specific exit number.

“I’ve lived in Moscow for seven years,” says Angelika, a designer from Voronezh, “but I still don’t always know where to go to find the place I need, so the new schematic diagrams will be very useful. Previously, some subway stations had maps, but not with so much detail.”

Teething problems

Foreigners, meanwhile, focus their attention on other elements. “It is good that the new information boards have QR-codes, which can be ‘read’ by smartphones,” says Florentina, a writer from Vienna. But there are also shortcomings. “The English font of the information on posters and in the captions to theaters and museums is too small – you have to come very close to see it well,” she says.

Pleasant encounters on the streets of Moscow

Florentina was also dissatisfied with the fact that such posters are not provided at all subway stations: “When I was trying to find Tsaritsyno Park (a museum and reserve in the south of Moscow) at a subway station with the same name, it turned out to be quite difficult,” she says.

“There are no maps with landmarks for other areas, such as those already in the city center. There were no clear pointers in the English language, and the passers-by I met did not speak in English, so they could not help me,” she adds.

Officials say that the navigation system is gradually being redeveloped and improved. According to Darya Chuvasheva, a press representative for the Department of Transport of Moscow, the introduction of a unified navigation system will take place in stages.

“By the end of 2014, the system will first appear on the first subway stations on the Circle Line. By the end of 2015, we plan to install the system at all major stopping points, subway stations and transport interchange hubs,” says Chuvasheva.
