Summary [ ]

Trip Tucker enjoys his off-duty time playing the harmonica in his quarters when he notices the Enterprise dropping out of warp . Looking out his window, he can see an alien ship approaching from the aft when Captain Archer calls in to ask if he'd like to help with some repair work; they've stopped to answer a distress call .

Act One [ ]

The ship is a Retellian freighter and is experiencing problems with its life support systems . Tucker meets up with Archer and T'Pol at a docking port . Two crewmen from the ship are welcomed aboard Enterprise and explain that they have been hired to return a young woman back to her homeworld but a few days ago her stasis pod began to malfunction. Their ship is a small freighter , however, not designed or equipped for more than two people; they still have a long journey ahead of them (at warp 2) and if she wakes up, there won't be enough food or air . They gladly accept all the assistance Archer offers them and are grateful for Tucker to take a look. One of the aliens, Goff , also makes a request for a bath , and Archer agrees, adding a meal prepared by the chef .

The other alien, Plinn , guides Tucker to the pod, which appears to be "creatively" powered by some old Ardanan power cells . Tucker suggests EPS conduits and goes to examine the pod, asking for Hoshi Sato to come aboard to translate and to get some tools. The alien agrees, happy for the help. Tucker is slightly struck by the female. Meanwhile, on the Enterprise , Goff meets with Archer, and thinks him for his hospitality. When Archer offers to help them get to their destination in just a few days, however, he politely declines the offer, insisting that they are on a schedule and that the family is not even expecting her on her home world for another five months.

However, trouble occurs when the passenger awakens following another malfunction while Tucker is working. It becomes obvious that she is not there of her own will: she is kicking and screaming in the pod that she is being held in, demanding to be let out. At dinner with the captain and T'Pol, the aliens receive an alert, and Goff goes to investigate, trying to not arouse suspicion. He finds Tucker trying to help her out of the pod, but, as he helps her up, Goff knocks him out. He calls for the other alien, who politely leaves dinner as well to address a "minor problem." When he leaves, Archer calls Tucker, but he doesn't respond, prompting him to have Malcolm Reed escort Plinn back to his ship. Goff goes to the docking port, sees Plinn being escorted, and starts firing. He leaves his partner behind and undocks his ship, breaking the docking clamps as he does so.

Act Two [ ]

The Enterprise pursues him at warp 2, taking him out of warp. The freighter manages to release a dilithium hydroxyl cloud that disables Enterprise 's warp drive temporarily. They will have to purge their plasma vents .

On the freighter, the outraged passenger picks up a weapon and beats Tucker with it, yelling in an alien language. Tucker slowly tries to signal he's not one of the captors. He signals he will untie her, though as he comes in, Goff bursts in and demands he fix the stasis pod. Tucker says it will be awhile, and Goff accepts it, leaving the room. Tucker then unties her and tries to gesture for the universal translator , since it must be nearby. He finds it and points it at her, gesturing for her to talk. She does so, and eventually they can communicate. She explains to Tucker that she is a prisoner and that she was attacked on her way back from a diplomatic mission. She is surprised that Tucker doesn't know her, for her family is apparently known on hundreds of worlds. She is Kaitaama , to be the First Monarch of the Sovereign Dynasty of Krios Prime . She is sure that she has been kidnapped by the Retellians for a ransom – so she suggests just waiting until the ransom is paid and they are returned safely. Tucker, however, doesn't want to sit around and wait, so he suggests trying to escape the cargo vessel using an escape pod he saw earlier. She protests, stating that it is too dangerous, but Tucker tells her that he is not one of her subjects and that he will try to get out regardless of what she says.

Back on the Enterprise , Archer and T'Pol interrogate Plinn. Plinn insists he's a victim, too, and that he doesn't have much information about Goff's plans. Archer asks for their warp frequency to more easily locate the ship, but he insists he doesn't know much about it. Archer orders him kept in the airlock under guard.

Tucker works on opening a way into the ship's cargo bay, trying to convince Kaitaama to come along. She berates him and is confident they will not harm her due to her value. Tucker is convinced they'll kill him once the stasis pod is fixed, and says to her that hostage situations rarely turn out as expected. He successfully opens the door to the crawlspace and makes a final plea for her to come with him. When he promises to disable internal sensors so that the ship won't be able to detect the escape pod , she finally agrees to come with him. They find that the escape pod is only large enough for one person, but they have to cram in. Kaitaama however has difficulty getting into the escape pod, so she rips her dress to be less confining and enters, all in the eyes of a disbelieving Tucker as he makes his way inside. He jettisons the pod and they cross the subspace threshold successfully.

Tucker is now without a plan, which surprises Kaitaama, but he is able to find a star system ninety million kilometers away. Forced, she agrees to head there.

Act Three [ ]

Crammed inside a tiny space, they irritate each other immensely as Tucker tries to figure out the pod and Kaitaama berates him for touching a First Monarch and not knowing what he's doing. Tucker tries to tolerate her and states they will have a day to try to find a way to get along for the long ride.

Plinn is brought to a dimly-lit room (the mess hall, minus most of the furnishings) on Enterprise , the captain awaiting him. Archer starts by mentioning Plinn's tribunal which he says will take place in the room. He says T'Pol is assigned to be an impartial judicial administrator to his case, having already reviewed the evidence. He states several charges for which he will be judged – and an example of the kinds of the harsh punishments T'Pol has brought before. Plinn objects that they don't have jurisdiction over him and that he wasn't responsible for the crimes, but Archer simply says he's not the one Plinn must convince. T'Pol enters, pretending to be the harsh judge and asks if he knows the accusations – and if his culture has death rituals . Plinn demands his government be contacted, but T'Pol states she has complete autonomy and doesn't feel the need. She leaves, leaving Plinn under a lot of pressure. Archer is playing "good cop" and offers him leniency versus T'Pol in exchange for some information.

In the escape pod, the two find some nourishment in a compartment. Tucker makes some conversation and the two manage to tolerate each other until they can land on a habitable planet . Tucker still can't figure out the sensor for life signs , but can see that it has a breathable atmosphere . Tucker finds a few islands , and Kaitaama permits the landing. It's a bumpy descent, but fortunately the pod makes it. They end up in a hot, humid, swampy area, not very hospitable.

Act Four [ ]

Kaitaama and Tucker explore the area to set up camp and focus on survival, though they continue irritating each other. Kaitaama insists on treating Tucker's wound, as she is now dependent on him. She is also sent to get dry wood, but can't find much, prompting a comment by Tucker. She refuses to do the manual work, leaving it to the one "more suited" but Tucker won't have it, and demands that she gets more wood stating that since she is dependent on him, he's the one in charge. Fed up, Kaitaama stands nose to nose to the commander telling him that him speaking to her in such a manner would get him imprisoned, but Tucker counters that since he saved her life, he should get a medal because without him, she would be dead, which Kaitaama says that would be preferable; which draws a response from Tucker saying that the commoners wouldn't complain if she were dead. Finally having enough of his insults, she proceeds to strike Tucker but he blocks her and both of them tumble into the water nearby, where they end up kissing and become physically intimate with one another.

Kissing and making up

Kissing and making up

Later, they wake up, and Tucker hears the sound of the escape pod's subspace beacon , which indicates it's been traced. Tucker smashes it into silence, since it probably is Goff. Indeed, he lands on the planet in pursuit of the two. They set a trap for him, with a decoy Tucker that Goff shoots, only for Tucker to jump from above and fight him. Goff bests him, but Kaitaama knocks him out with a stick from behind. As they look for his weapon, fortunately, Archer, T'Pol, and Reed arrive to rescue them.

Back on the Enterprise , Tucker accompanies Kaitaama to the battle cruiser that is to take her home. He jokes that he doubts that from what she told him, her family would allow her to see him if he were to ever visit Krios Prime. But she states that once she has been made First Monarch, she will have the authority to change the rules and asks him to come visit her to find out.

" This'd be a whole lot easier if you'd stop moving around. " " You're touching me! " " I'm afraid I don't have much choice. " " It's inappropriate to touch the first monarch! " " You're welcome to step outside until I'm done. "

" You know, you were a lot more pleasant in stasis. "

" Is it edible? " " Well, depends how hungry you are. "

" Well, we started out with 83 crewmen on board. We're down to 76. "

" How much do you weigh? " " What? " " Your weight? " " 72 kilograms. " " Height? " " 1.8 meters. Why are you asking these questions? " " Does your culture observe any postmortem rituals? " " This is not fair! I demand to speak with someone from my government! "

" You'd be dead if it weren't for me! " " I'm beginning to think that would be preferable! " " I doubt the commoners back home would complain! "

" Trip? This a bad time? "

Background information [ ]

Production dates [ ].

Shooting Precious Cargo

Padma Lakshmi receives some direction from David Livingston

  • This episode was filmed between 11 and 22 October 2002.

Story and script [ ]

  • This was the first Star Trek: Enterprise episode on which David A. Goodman worked. He explained, " With 'Precious Cargo' I was new to the staff, I didn't fully understand the rules and I definitely didn't – a lot of my problems with that episode were my fault, in terms of how I approached writing it. You learn as you go […] I definitely had a lot to learn… Even up to that point I had not written for one-hour television which was definitely very different from writing for half-hour. I had a big learning curve, and I learnt a lot. " [1]
  • The producers of Star Trek: Enterprise had the idea of including references to the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode " The Perfect Mate " in this installment, a concept they proceeded to execute. [2]
  • The first draft script of this episode was submitted on 1 October 2002 . The installment's final draft teleplay was issued on 10 October 2002, with revised pages being submitted until 14 October 2002. The archival final draft of the script was submitted on 4 December 2002 . That draft of the script contained a couple of errors, such as its pronunciation guide referring to the language spoken by Kaitaama as "Tiburrian" and the captain's log being dated "August 17, 2152" rather than "September 12, 2152".
  • Executive Producer Brannon Braga performed a rewrite on the episode, trying to treat it as a screwball comedy but later admitted, " I struggled through it. " ( ENT Season 2 Blu-ray " Destination: Unknown " special feature) Said David A. Goodman, " To be fair, I was rewritten a lot on 'Precious Cargo'. " (" Judgment " podcast/ audio commentary )

Cast and characters [ ]

  • Dr. Phlox ( John Billingsley ) does not appear in this episode.
  • Leland Crooke previously played Gelnon in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes " One Little Ship " and " Honor Among Thieves ".
  • Scott Klace had previously played Dremk in the Star Trek: Voyager episode " Juggernaut ".

Sets and props [ ]

  • The Ardanan power relay was a reuse of the chrono deflector used by the future Admiral Janeway in VOY : " Endgame ". ( citation needed • edit )
  • Among the items from this episode which were sold off on the It's A Wrap! sale and auction on eBay were many crowbars . [3]

Continuity [ ]

  • The similarities between this episode and TNG : " The Perfect Mate " include the fact that Krios Prime is heavily referenced in both episodes. Both characters central to the plot ( Kamala and Kaitaama) were also from that planet.
  • T'Pol wears her Vulcan robes during Plinn's "tribunal" for the first time since her introductory scene in ENT : " Broken Bow ".
  • Tucker's ruse of using his Starfleet uniform as bait for Goff to attack him is similar to what Miles O'Brien did to Vinod in DS9 : " Paradise ".

Reception [ ]

  • David A. Goodman has repeatedly stated there were two very different forms of this episode, describing both as a "piece of crap." These were, specifically, his original scripted version of the outing and the final edit in its aired format. ("Judgment" podcast/ audio commentary ; [4] )
  • Even from the time of its origins, this episode provoked disappointment from the producers of Star Trek: Enterprise . " They were pretty much ready to fire me, " David A. Goodman recalled about their reaction to the episode's script. ("Judgment" podcast/ audio commentary ) Thinking he himself did not manage to do "a very good job" of rewriting the episode, Brannon Braga even asked Rick Berman if there was a way to not have the episode broadcast. ( ENT Season 2 Blu-ray " Destination: Unknown " special feature) Thanks to Braga, Goodman remained on the series, contributing to the writing of some later episodes. ("Judgment" podcast/ audio commentary )
  • In 2013 , Brannon Braga stated that he considers "Precious Cargo" to be one of the worst Star Trek episodes ever. ( ENT Season 2 Blu-ray " Destination: Unknown " special feature) Though David A. Goodman did not take full responsibility for the end result of his initial script, he laughed, " I'm very proud of the fact that I've written one of the most hated episodes of Star Trek ever. " [5]

Thus, Archer and Trip begin their work. Archer allows one of the aliens, named Goff, to eat and bathe, and Trip begins his repair work with the other one, Plinn, while asking Hoshi to translate some foreign words. Meanwhile, Archer asks Goff if he wants a lift, but Goff declines, since the woman's people aren't expecting her for five months.

The stasis pod then malfunctions again and the woman wakes up and begins kicking and screaming. An alarm goes off while the aliens, Archer, and T'Pol are dining, and Goff goes to check it out and finds Trip helping the woman out, so he knocks him unconscious. He calls Plinn over, and Archer messages Trip. When he doesn't reply, Archer has Malcolm escort Plinn back to his ship. When Goff sees Plinn being escorted, he fires at Malcolm, then undocks his ship. The Enterprise tries to give chase, but the freighter releases a compound called dilithium hydroxyl, which disables the warp core.

On the freighter, the alien woman begins beating Trip with a weapon and yelling an an alien language. Trip tries to communicate that he didn't kidnap her and will untie her, when Goff enters and demands he fix the stasis pod. Trip says it will "be a while", then when Goff leaves, Trip gets the universal translator to work. The alien woman explains that she was kidnapped after a diplomatic mission, she's going to be the "First Monarch of the Sovereign Dynasty of Krios Prime", and her name is Kaitaama. She suggests simply waiting until the ransom is paid, but Trip wants to escape in an escape pod.

On the Enterprise , Archer and T'Pol interrogate Plinn, who claims to also be a victim and that Goff made plans he's unaware of. Archer asks for the warp frequency, but Plinn claims he doesn't know, so Archer has him locked in the airlock. Meanwhile, Trip heads for an escape pod with Kaitaama in tow. She doesn't believe she's in danger of being killed due to her status, but Trip points out that they may kill him , and these situations are unpredictable. Thus, the two go into the escape pod and head towards a star system, arguing all the while.

Plinn is put in the mess hall for an impromptu tribunal, with T'Pol as the "judicial administrator", who intimidates him by implying she may have him executed and stating that she doesn't feel the need to contact his government, and Archer offering him leniency in exchange for information. Meanwhile, Trip and Kaitaama land on a planet that's hot and swampy, but inhabitable.

Tropes in this episode include:

  • "Ass" in Ambassador : Kaitaama says that she was on a diplomatic mission when she was captured. Diplomacy is clearly not one of her talents.
  • Banging for Help : Trip is alerted to Kaitaama's situation when she bangs on the inside of her stasis pod crying for help.
  • Call-Back : When Kaitaama insists on remaining on the space pirate ship until the ransom is paid, Trip mentions being involved in a few Hostage Situations that had unexpected outcomes.
  • Coming in Hot : Trip manages to crash-land the Escape Pod on Dagobah, despite barely being able to read the controls.
  • Deadpan Snarker : Archer can't resist when he finds Trip and Kaitaama in the swamp, Trip in his undies and Kaitama in a torn dress. Archer: Trip?...This a bad time?
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop : Archer and T'Pol pull this on the subordinate pirate, with T'Pol as a ruthless "judicial administrator" and Archer willing to convince her to show leniency.
  • Hanging Judge : Archer and T'Pol pretend that the latter is one to bluff Plinn into giving them the information needed to find Goff's ship. Archer even implies that she's had seven Enterprise crewmembers executed for dereliction of duty.
  • Hates Being Touched : Kaitaama, as touching her is considered inappropriate. Of course, once she and Trip are stuck in an Escape Pod together, touching becomes unavoidable. Kaitaama: It's inappropriate to touch the First Monarch. Trip: You're welcome to step outside until I'm finished.
  • Hyperspeed Escape : The kidnappers' ship pulls one after releasing a cloud of gunk that clogs Enterprise 's plasma vents.
  • Implied Death Threat : When T'Pol is pretending to be a judge of sorts, she asks Plinn his height and weight for what's implied to be his coffin or an urn and if his home planet has death rituals, implying she may have him executed.
  • Nondescript, Nasty, Nutritious : The rations in the Escape Pod . Kaitaama: Is it...edible? Trip: (chewing on the food item) Depends how hungry you are.
  • No-Sell : Trip punches one of the kidnappers in the face several times, but does no damage. Then Kaitaama grabs a hard object and gives him a Tap on the Head .
  • Purple Is Powerful : Kaitaama (a princess/diplomat) wears a purple gown, which doesn't survive the episode unscathed .
  • Royal Brat : Kaitaama, very much so.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them! : Kaitaama tells Trip that when she becomes First Monarch of Krios prime, she'll be able to change the rules preventing her from dating.
  • Shout-Out : To The Empire Strikes Back with the swampy planet Dagobah and the Belligerent Sexual Tension with a sci-fi princess.
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss : Trip and Kaitaama. A round of swamp-water wrestling leads to a rather passionate snog.
  • Space Pirates : The ones kidnapping Kaitaama, and they fumble this particular piracy pretty bad.
  • Well, Excuse Me, Princess! : Played absolutely straight.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness : Why Trip decides to escape—he doubts that the Space Pirates will keep him alive if he fixes the stasis pod.

Star Trek: Discovery's Enterprise Plaque Reveals New Mirror Universe History Details

Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors", reveals new details about the Mirror Universe's history on the ISS Enterprise.
  • The dedication plaque on the starship sheds light on events in the late-23rd century after "Mirror, Mirror" from TOS season 2.
  • Burnham and Booker found the ISS Enterprise in interdimensional space and brought it into the 32nd century Prime Universe.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors", shockingly brought the ISS Enterprise into the 32nd century, and the starship's dedication plaque reveals new details about the Mirror Universe's history. Written by Johanna Lee and Carlos Cisco and directed by Jen McGowan, "Mirrors" brought Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) into interdimensional space in pursuit of the next clue to the ancient treasure of the Progenitors, which was hidden aboard the 23rd century ISS Enterprise from the Mirror Universe.

On his X account, Jörg Hillebrand (@gaghyogi49), who was a researcher for Star Trek: Picard season 3 renowned for his attention to detail, posted a clear translation of the ISS Enterprise's dedication plaque from Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5 . The illuminated text reveals what happened in the late-23rd century Mirror Universe after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series season 2's "Mirror, Mirror." Read the post below:

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

A timeline of star trek's mirror universe, from the terran empire to the temporal wars.

The Mirror Universe was introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series season 2's "Mirror, Mirror" and its canonical history can be tracked through Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Enterprise, and Star Trek: Discovery. The earliest chronological glimpse of the Mirror Universe is on April 5, 2063, when Zephram Cochrane (James Cromwell) murdered a Vulcan after making First Contact in Enterprise 's "In A Mirror, Darkly". In the 22nd century of Star Trek: Enterprise 's Mirror Universe , Commander Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula) captured the USS Defiant from the 23rd century, but he was betrayed by Hoshi Sato (Linda Park), who declared herself Empress of the Terran Empire.

In the 23rd century of Star Trek: Discovery , the Mirror Universe was ruled by Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). Georgiou jumped to Star Trek 's Prime Universe aboard the USS Discovery after defeating a coup by Gabriel Lorca (Jason Issacs) . The Terran Empire continued unabated, but after Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) briefly switched places with his Mirror Universe counterpart, he convinced the Mirror Spock (Leonard Nimoy) to institute reforms to save the Terran Empire from its inevitable collapse.

Refugees fled the Mirror Universe aboard the stolen ISS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 episode 5 reveals that High Chancellor Spock did change the Terran Empire, but he was assassinated for weakness. Refugees fled the Mirror Universe aboard the stolen ISS Enterprise, thanks to the Mirror Saru (Doug Jones), a rebel leader. The ISS Enterprise's personnel did make it to the Prime Universe. However, in the Mirror Universe, the Terran Empire was conquered by the Klingon/Cardassian Alliance , as detailed in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine . By Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, the Mirror and Prime Universe timelines have split further apart thanks to the Temporal Wars, making crossing over impossible.

Star trek: discovery’s pilot just joined enterprise’s legacy.

Keyla Detmer hasn't had a lot to do in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, but episode 5 did allow her to become part of the USS Enterprise's legacy.

Warning: This Article Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5 - "Mirrors"

  • Keyla Detmer piloted the ISS Enterprise in Star TrekL Discovery season 5, joining the ranks of Enterprise helmsman in the process.
  • The USS Enterprise has had other notable helmsmen like Sulu and Geordi La Forge across different versions.
  • Discovery provided Detmer with the chance to pilot a version of the Enterprise, filmed on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 enabled the show's pilot, Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts) to join an important legacy for the USS Enterprise. Detmer has been the helmsman of the USS Discovery since season 1, and an integral part of Discovery 's cast of characters up through season 5 . Although she has largely been a supporting character on Discovery , Detmer has still enjoyed some important moments, including a few memorable subplots in both seasons 1 and 3.

Despite Detmer not appearing in Discovery season 5, episode 5 , the show bestowed an important milestone on her off-screen. Episode 5 saw the retrieval of the Mirror Universe's ISS Enterprise after a clue in the search for the Progenitor's technology led Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) to a heated confrontation with L'ak (Elias Toufexis) and Moll (Eve Harlow) on the abandoned ship. Discovery managed to save the Mirror Enterprise from interdimensional space , and Captain Burham assigned Lieutenant Commander Detmer and Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) to take it back to Federation Headquarters.

5 Ways Star Trek: Discovery’s Mirror Enterprise Is Different From USS Enterprise

Star trek: discovery’s pilot commander detmer is the latest enterprise helmsman, detmer flew the iss enterprise in discovery season 5.

Thanks to episode 5, Detmer has joined the ranks of those who had piloted a version of the Enterprise in Star Trek history . Detmer could have had the opportunity to pilot the USS Enterprise during Discovery season 2, especially considering that its Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) , was a main character on the show. Discovery 's time jump to the 32nd century made any further encounters with the Prime Universe's Enterprise impossible, but season 5 finally gave Detmer the chance to be included in the category of legendary Enterprise helmsman.

It seems Discovery has given Detmer the chance to pilot the only Enterprise she will likely ever get to during the rest of the show's run.

Although the ISS Enterprise is different from the Prime Universe's USS Enterprise, the two are similar enough that Discovery filmed episode 5's Enterprise scenes on the set for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which is set on the USS Enterprise in Discovery 's old time period, the 23rd century. It seems Discovery has given Detmer the chance to pilot the only Enterprise she will likely ever get to during the rest of the show's run. Of course, Detmer piloting any version of the USS Enterprise is still a huge honor, considering which characters she shares the distinction with.

Star Trek’s Enterprise Helmsmen Explained

The uss enterprise has had some notable helmsmen.

The various versions of the Enterprise have had some incredible helmsmen, and the ship has the interesting distinction of being piloted by two father-daughter teams at different times . The most famous Enterprise Helmsman is, of course, Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) from Star Trek: The Original Series . Sulu and his other versions, including his Mirror Universe counterpart, faithfully piloted the Enterprise for many years of the franchise's timeline, and Sulu's daughter, Demora (Jacqueline Kim) took on the task years later during Star Trek Generations .

Sulu isn't the only famous character to have been an Enterprise helmsman, however. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) was the initial helmsman for the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek: The Next Generation , and like Sulu would share the honor with his daughter, Sidney (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) who took on the role in Star Trek: Picard season 3. More recently, Strange New Worlds introduced Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) as the helmsman under Captain Pike. Ortegas has proved to be one of Star Trek 's best pilots and a memorable addition to the Enterprise pilot ranks , similar to Detmer on Star Trek: Discovery .

Global Screen Boards Supernatural Survival Horror ‘The Trek’ (EXCLUSIVE)

"The Trek"

Global Screen , the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam . The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.

“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.

Popular on Variety

The film stars an established South African cast which includes Morné Visser (“The Kissing Booth 1,2,3”), well-known comedian Rob van Vuuren (Netflix series “Ludik,” “Slumber Party Massacre,” “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” “The Mauritanian”), Trix Vivier (“Trackers,” “Legacy”), Maurice Carpede (“The Kingdom”), Camilla Borghesani (“Roxy”) and newcomer Leah Lindeque.

Durban-born Adam, whose background includes commercials, music videos and documentaries, has quickly emerged as one of South Africa’s leading young talents since moving into feature films. His first feature as DOP, Apartheid political thriller “The Last Victims” (2019) was recognized with over 20 awards at international festivals including a best cinematography nod at the RapidLion Film Festival, also known as the South African International Film Festival. Adam also recently directed and served as cinematographer for one episode of “Stories of a Generation – With Pope Francis,” the Netflix docu-series that features Martin Scorsese.

Global Screen’s Martin Schneider describes “The Trek” as the kind of special elevated genre cocktail today’s buyers are always on the hunt for: “The film is an innovative blend of historical thriller, survival horror and supernatural elements that draws on authentic Southern African lore and history as well as its unique Kalahari Desert setting. The story also incorporates the complex themes at the forefront of today’s cultural conversations, especially the dark legacy of racism and colonialism.

“Meekaaeel has established himself over the last years as one of South Africa’s best DOP’s and now one of the country’s most exciting up-and-coming directors. His story-centric approach to shooting and commitment to visual storytelling make him the perfect fit for this special genre project. In terms of Meekaaeel’s precision and the visceral nature of his filmmaking, we are reminded of movies like ‘Bone Tomahawk’ by S. Craig Zahler and directors who craft gripping, multilayered genre films with substance as well as scares, like Karyn Kusama or Jeremy Saulnier, also a DOP turned director.”

Adam commented: “The key conflict that the film explores is the oldest one of them all: the struggle over land. Our family of settlers, whose arrival tips the natural balance, are put on a brutal collision course with forces that are bound to protect the land at any cost. Both sides in this conflict stand to lose everything and there’s a feeling of inevitability as each step on their journey strips them of more of their humanity. I think this speaks to the loss of innocence that the colonial project brought about and the importance of looking back so as not to let history repeat itself. A partner like Global Screen – who understands the weight of this story – is indispensable in allowing ‘The Trek’ to be seen by genre and film lovers far beyond South Africa.”

Faithful to South Africa’s multilingual history, the film is majority English language, but also features dialogue in Afrikaans and Khoekhoengowab, a now endangered language that makes heavy use of click consonants.

“The Trek” was written by James C. Williamson, J. Hannah Massyn and Sandulela Asanda. Williamson’s 2020 festival hit “Fried Barry” played Sitges, Fantasia and L’Étrange Film Festival and found distribution in over 70 countries, including deals with Shudder and ShowMax.

“The Trek” will also feature original music from Haezer, one of South Africa’s top electronic musicians.

“The Trek” is currently in post-production and expected to launch at a major film festival in the second half of 2024. The film is produced by Williamson for The Department of Special Projects and Warren Gray for Resistance Pictures in co-production with Alto Media (South Africa), Resistance Pictures (Cape Town), and Sternenberg Films (Germany). It is supported by South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry and National Film and Video Foundation.

“The Trek” reflects a growing focus on genre content for Global Screen, part of the Telepool Group, best known for its expertise with animation, family entertainment and prestige drama. Global Screen’s foray into elevated genre includes the Sandra Hüller led nightmare-thriller “Sleep,” a debut feature by Michael Venus in which the Oscar- and BAFTA-nominated Hüller plays a woman plagued by horrific dreams, which become a never-ending nightmare haunting an entire village community.

Recent genre titles handled also include “You’re Not Me” (Tú No Eres Yo) by Goya-nominated producers Marisa Crespo and Moisés Romera, a Spanish-language satirical thriller, which launched at Fantastic Fest in Austin, before having its international premiere at Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam.

  • Trivia The tables in the Horizon's mess hall are actually from the USS Voyager's mess.
  • Goofs Travis deliberately hides the Horizon's experience with the space pirates from Archer when the latter mentioned seeing hull damage on the ship, likely to show that he thinks his old cargo ship is fine on its own. But a Starfleet officer would certainly report this right away, both so the Enterprise could be on the lookout for the enemy aliens and so Starfleet could warn other cargo ships.
