Background information [ ]

  • While much of the information included on these plans might now be considered non- canonical or as apocryphal at best, they were used as a source and reference for the first three Star Trek films . Excerpts from these, predominantly deck plans, were used as on screen displays in Star Trek: The Motion Picture when V'ger was reading the Enterprise 's on-board database . The onscreen excerpts at least, remain considered canon.
  • Based in part on a suggestion by Gene Roddenberry , an early, pre-publication version of these deck plans were donated to the Smithsonian Institution by Franz Joseph in April of 1974. They were displayed along with the eleven-foot original model of the USS Enterprise in the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum later that summer. Mounted behind Plexiglas on a wall underneath the ship, visitors to the "Life in the Universe" display were encouraged to fill out a form indicating whether they would want to see these and similar works published, as at the time, no publishing deal had been worked out; Random House's Ballantine Books division subsequently did indeed work out just such a deal.

Starship Deck Plans Links Compendium

One of the big differences between running a fantasy campaign and a science-fiction campaign is that when playing SF, I found myself constantly looking for starship deck plans.

With a fantasy campaign, many of the maps revolved around buildings, dungeons or overland adventures, and those sorts of maps were easy to knock out over lunch. Failing that, I had plenty of maps from 20+ years of Dungeons & Dragons that I could fall back on.

With my Star Wars campaign though, the adventures are split between world-based exploration and starship- or space station-based combat. Starship-based adventures represent perhaps 1/8 to 1/4 of the encounters I run, but when I do run them I often find myself scrambling for deck plans.

The big reason there is that it takes more effort to come up with a rational-seeming starship. A dungeon can be as simple as a series of rooms, but with starships, players always want to know where to find the bridge, engineering, Jeffries tubes, etc.

That’s where ready-made deck plans help. The Star Wars rule books (regardless of edition) help with this, as they often feature deck plans for smaller ships, but the place where I consistently come up short is with frigate-class and larger vessels. I don’t expect anyone to map out the Death Star (though I’m sure somewhere, somehow, someone is working on it) but detailed plans of light and heavy cruisers would be helpful.

I’m still searching for those, but over the last few years, I have accumulated a goodly number of starship deck plan links.  If you know of a deck plans site that isn’t listed here, please add it in the comments or email me at [email protected] and I’ll add it to this list.

Discoverse Federation Ship Classes

Starfleet Ships Section 31 Ships Non-Starfleet Ships Shuttles Space Stations Satellites and Probes Unknown Starfleet Class Unknown Non-Starfleet Class Unknown Stations

star trek starship schematics

  • Most Discoverse Starfleet ships are bigger than the original Constitution class and than any canon Prime Universe class of the next 50 years. A Discoverse ship described here as "mid-sized" would be "huge" by TOS or TOS movie standards. All sizes according to the Official Starships Collection scale chart and other references by Eaglemoss.
  • The redesigned and considerably upscaled version of the Constitution-class USS Enterprise NCC-1701 ultimately disconnects DIS and SNW from the rest of Star Trek. It would be preposterous to list this very same ship in this database with two different designs and two different sizes.
  • Bryan Fuller purportedly demanded the Starfleet ships of his series to be flat and to have angular nacelles, as he didn't want them to resemble the original Enterprise. But other anachronistic design elements are even more substantial. Most early 23rd century Starfleet ships of Discovery look like they belong into the late 23rd century (Hoover, Magee, Malachowski) or even the late 24th century (Cardenas, Nimitz, Walker, Shepard). Also, they all seem to have Abramsverse-style bridge windows. The protruding deflector dish is the only distinctive feature the Discovery classes have in common with the original Constitution.
  • Strange New Worlds backpedals as the exterior design of ships is concerned, which are now more like we would have expected in the TOS era, thereby creating a discontinuity to Discovery. The very advanced looking "old" ships from DIS are seen only on rare occasions in SNW.
  • Discoverse and Abramsverse starships may have the huge purported size and the bridge windows in common, but nothing else. Except for the Enterprise, all ships of "Star Trek (2009)", set in 2258, are the same design family as the Prime Universe USS Kelvin of 2233, but not a single of the numerous Discovery and SNW ships from the same era looks remotely like that.
  • Discovery's Starfleet classes are all named for US test pilots and military people. Despite this peculiarity, I assume that the tradition to name classes for its first ship still exists in the Discovery universe, although in the case of the Crossfield class it is doubtful.
  • Shuttles, at least in Discovery, are bigger and much more advanced looking than in TOS and the TOS movies (or even the Abramsverse), and apparently warp-capable as a general rule.

Unknown Starfleet Class

USS Angelou , commemorated by Hemmer in SNW: "Memento Mori"

star trek starship schematics

Previously the shuttle SHN-03 seen in SHO: "The Brightest Star" indicated it was the Shenzhou. This was retconned for "The Sound of Thunder".

USS Aryabhatta , listed as a previous posting of Christopher Pike in DIS: "Brother" and of Una Chin-Riley in SNW: "Ad Astra per Aspera"

USS Bowman , mentioned as the ship that Cadet Thira Sidhu's husband serves on in SHO: "Ask Not"

USS Chatelet , listed as a previous posting of Christopher Pike in DIS: "Brother" and of Una Chin-Riley in SNW: "Ad Astra per Aspera"

USS Cooper , mentioned as undergoing a refit in DIS: "Despite Yourself"

The crew of the Discovery actually encounters the Mirror Universe version of the ship (which was not shown either).

USS Cuyahoga , commemorated by Joseph M'Benga in SNW: "Memento Mori"

USS Gallant , commemorated by Nyota Uhura in SNW: "Memento Mori"

star trek starship schematics

USS Hoover , mentioned as destroyed in a Klingon attack in DIS: "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum"

We may assume this is the class ship of the Hoover class, but it is not entirely certain.

USS Iowa , mentioned by alternate Kirk as his birthplace in SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

This, of course, is a playful alteration because "our" Kirk was born in the State of Iowa. Considering that it is the UEF Enterprise in this timeline, he should have referred to the ship as UEF Iowa.

USS Kelvin , mentioned as George Kirk's ship in SNW: "A Quality of Mercy" and "Lost in Translation"

There are reasons to assume this ship doesn't look the same in the Discoverse as in the Abramsverse.

USS Kongo , commemorated by Spock in SNW: "Memento Mori" and shown on a star chart in SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

The Kongo is traditionally identified as a Constitution-class ship (since the Star Fleet Technical Manual ) but might a different class just as well.

USS Lexington , shown on a star chart in SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

USS Muroc , mentioned as destroyed in a Klingon attack in DIS: "Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum"

USS Palenque , commemorated by Erica Ortegas in SNW: "Memento Mori"

USS Potemkin , shown on a star chart in SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

USS Republic , listed as one of James Kirk's previous assignments in SNW: "A Quality of Mercy" and shown on a dsiplay in SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

USS Saratoga , mentioned as destroyed in a Klingon suicide attack in DIS: "The War Without, The War Within"

USS Valiant , shown on a star chart in SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

USS Yangtze , commemorated by a crewman in SNW: "Memento Mori"

Unknown Non-Starfleet Class

SS Carlos , colony ship, listed on a screen in SNW: "The Serene Squall"

The Carlos, Raccoona and Tiptree were made up by the pirates but it seems likely they pulled authentic names from a database.

star trek starship schematics

SS Raccoona , colony ship, listed on a screen in SNW: "The Serene Squall"

SS Puget Sound , colony ship, mentioned on a PADD in SNW: "Strange New Worlds" and commemorated by La'an Noonien-Singh in SNW: "Memento Mori"

Tellarite merchant vessel D-756 , bridge shown SHO: "The Escape Artist"

SS Tiptree , colony ship, listed on a screen in SNW: "The Serene Squall"

Unknown Stations

Deep Space 2 , shown on star charts in SNW: "The Broken Circle" and SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

Deep Space K-7 , listed on several star charts (DIS & SNW), mentioned as the destination of a shipment of vidium power cells in SNW: "All Those Who Wander"

Of course, this is supposed to be the same station as in TOS: "The Trouble with Tribbles".

Lya Station Alpha , shown on a star chart in SNW: "Subspace Rhapsody"

Starbase 12 , listed on a star chart in SNW: "Strange New Worlds" and "Spock Amok"

Starbase 23 , mentioned in DIS: "Light and Shadows"

Starbase 40 , mentioned in SHO: "Q&A"

Starbases 2, 4, 9, 11, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 39-Sierra, 46, 88, 211, 234, G-6 , shown on star charts in SNW: "Under the Cloak of War" or "Subspace Rhapsody"

Star chart references are not complete. There may be more occurrences than listed here.

Dreadnought, U.S.S. Foley NXC-2174, Foley class starship: General Plans

Dreadnought, U.S.S. Foley NXC-2174, Foley class starship: General Plans

Regular price $24.99 Sale

During the great Earth-Klinzhai War of 2256, the MK-I dreadnought then in service was found to underperform, sometimes disastrously so, in combat with enemy forces. Following the war, Fleet Special Projects Division saw the need for a better-designed, dedicated Command-and-Control ship. The result was the Foley class dreadnought. These state-of-the-art vessels could perform as fleet command ships, orchestrating combat with other allied spacecraft in confrontation with hostile forces. In peacetime, they could function at the flagship of an exploratory squadron.

The Fole y class features the latest in circumferential drive technology with triple PB-32C FTL drive units. Armed with 26 MK-VII-B directed-energy emitters, ten torpedo launchers (8 forward, 2 aft), and CRM-114 countermeasures, this ship has been shown to perform more than adequately against any foreseen hostile force. USS Foley is equipped with two shuttle bays, located at the bow and stern of the engineering hull, which are connected to vehicle maintenance hangars below. Smaller utility craft can enter and exit through the forward bay, where they are parked when not in use.

8 Coolest Starships in Star Trek: The Original Series

Star Trek: The Original Series held plenty of impressively creative starships, used by a variety of different alien life, and enjoyed by fans.

  • Star Trek: TOS starships range from bizarre to iconic, showcasing the creativity and innovation of the show's artists and creators.
  • The Tholian Starship and Romulan Bird-Of-Prey are among the many unique vessels encountered by Captain Kirk during his galactic explorations.
  • The USS Enterprise, designed by artist Matt Jefferies, remains the most well-recognized starship in popular culture due to its innovative appearance.

Star Trek: The Original Series features some memorable quotes , uncanny aliens, and plenty of questionable fashion choices. Yet one of the show's most important aspects is its starships, which are used to both explore the galaxy and confront its various threats.

Star Trek: James T. Kirk's Best Friends, Ranked

Technical and budgetary limitations meant that many Star Trek : TOS starships were depicted as smears of light; luckily, the 2007–2008 remasters enhanced the show's visual diversity. As such, the weird and wonderful vessels encountered by Captain Kirk owe as much to the artists who worked on the remasters as they do their original creators. From doomsday weapons to massive flagships, The Original Series is full of inventive designs.

8 Lazarus' Ship

First appearance: "the alternative factor" (season 1, episode 27).

While TOS features some classic episodes , not all installments can be winners, as demonstrated by "The Alternative Factor". This first-season clunker sees the Enterprise crew dealing with two versions of the same man, Lazarus, from different planes of existence—if the two men touch, the universe goes boom.

The silly premise is not without its silver lining. Lazarus' dimension-hopping vessel is a brilliant piece of sci-fi kitsch thanks to its bubble-dome cockpit and retrofuturistic styling. This cute starship is also one of the most technically advanced to appear in the series: the Enterprise may travel through space (and sometimes time), but Lazarus' ship is a rare example of a craft that can move through dimensions.

7 The Planet Killer

First appearance: "the doomsday machine" (season 2, episode 6).

Long before Star Wars tested the destructive potential of the Death Star on Alderaan, Star Trek had its own planet-busting superweapon. Kirk's Enterprise crosses paths with the so-called Planet Killer while attempting to recover a damaged Starfleet ship, the USS Constitution . The only surviving member of the Constitution 's crew, Commodore Decker, explains that he has been investigating several ruined star systems, and that the Planet Killer is responsible for their destruction.

Star Trek: 6 Worst Things Done By The Federation, Ranked

The Planet Killer's antiproton beam represents one of the franchise's most devastating offensive technologies, easily disabling a top-of-the-line Constitution -class starship. The motives of the Planet Killer are more obscure—however, various Star Trek novels and comics have offered their own explanations for the powerful vessel. According to one questionably canon source, the Planet Killer was designed as an anti-Borg superweapon, while another novel sees the damaged ship reactivated and used to destroy an enhanced Borg cube. Whatever its purpose, it represents one of the greatest threats to the Federation.

6 Tholian Starship

First appearance: "the tholian web" (season 3, episode 9).

The Tholians are one of Star Trek 's most mysterious races. These apparently crystalline arachnids appear in only three of the franchise's more than nine hundred episodes, but this lack of screen time does nothing to detract from the threat posed by these xenophobic aliens.

"The Tholian Web" sees the Enterprise investigating the wreckage of another starship, the USS Defiant , which appears to be phasing in and out of existence. However, the Enterprise finds itself snared in the eponymous Tholian web when two alien starships weave an energy field around the Federation vessel. Although the Enterprise is able to escape, narrowly avoiding capture or destruction by this bizarre alien power, fans are sure to remember the unusual vessels responsible for Kirk's predicament.

5 The Fesarius

First appearance: "the corbomite maneuver" (season 1, episode 10).

The spherical Fesarius encountered by the Enterprise in "The Corbomite Maneuver" is the flagship of the First Federation (not to be confused with the United Federation of Planets). Its unusual, simplistic design sets it apart from the sleeker ships usually seen in the series; in many ways, it is a more rounded precursor to the Borg cube seen in The Next Generation . However, luckily for Kirk and his crew, the Fesarius is more interested in exploration than assimilation.

6 Biggest Retcons To Star Trek History

In addition to its impressive appearance, the Fesarius is also home to the alien Balok, played by Clint Howard. This was Howard's first Trek role—he would go on to make frequent appearances throughout the franchise, most recently in a 2023 episode of Strange New Worlds . The Fesarius itself would also reappear, albeit off-screen, as the ship plays a central role in a Shatner-authored novel and a Star Trek: Voyager short story.

4 Eymorg Starship

First appearance: "spock's brain" (season 3, episode 1).

To call "Spock's Brain" divisive is perhaps being too kind to an episode that many fans consider as the nadir of The Original Series . This campy caper involves the theft of Spock's brain (his body is turned into a robot by Doctor McCoy) and a race against time to retrieve the organ from the mysterious Eymorg civilization . Fred Frieburger, who helped to write the episode, is often accused of ruining Gene Roddenberry's utopian series—based on "Spock's Brain", the fans might be right.

However, even the worst episodes can feature interesting starships. The Eymorg vessel responsible for abducting Spock's brain is an inspired design that perfectly fits the show's bold, retrofuturistic aesthetic. There are two different versions of the Eymorg ship: a rocket-shaped vessel seen in the original episode, and a more spherical design created for the TOS remasters. Of the two, the latter is more interesting, as it draws upon contemporary ion-powered spaceships while retaining the classic sixties feel.

3 Romulan Bird-Of-Prey

First appearance: "balance of terror" (season 1, episode 14).

The Next Generation 's D'deridex-class warbirds maybe Star Trek 's most memorable take on Romulan starships, but the precursors seen in The Original Series are also worthy of examination. The hull and nacelles combination of the warbird recalls the design of many Federation ships—indeed, a line of dialogue cut from "Balance of Terror" suggested that the Romulans had stolen the blueprints from the Federation. The Bird-of-Prey encountered by Kirk in the Neutral Zone is more than capable of taking on the Enteprise , and is even superior in some respects.

For example, the Bird-of-Prey possesses cloaking technology, allowing it to conceal itself from enemy vessels. This makes the starship ideal for sneak attacks and hit-and-run strikes against the Federation, a strategy perfectly suited to the scheming Romulans. Furthermore, its arsenal of nuclear warheads may be relatively old-fashioned, but it is nonetheless effective.

2 Klingon D7 Cruiser

First appearance: "day of the dove (season 3, episode 7).

Despite being one of Star Trek 's most iconic starships, the Klingon D7 cruiser is rarely seen in The Original Series as broadcast. Indeed, the recognizable model is absent until the show's final season, as Klingon ships are instead represented by indistinct smears on the Enterprise 's screen. This shortcoming is remedied in the noughties remasters of the series, which insert CGI models of the cruiser into several earlier episodes.

8 Coolest Starships From Star Trek: The Next Generation

The D7 is primarily associated with the Klingon Empire , but this well-armed vessel also sees service under the Romulan Star Empire. For instance, a D7 is one of several Romulan-aligned ships that confronts Kirk's starship during "The Enterprise Incident", suggesting an alliance of sorts between the Klingon and Romulan states. Like many other ships under Romulan control, the D7 possesses a cloaking device, making it a deadly threat to the Federation.

1 USS Enterprise

First appearance: "the cage" (unaired pilot).

The Starship Enterprise has undergone numerous redesigns and reiterations since its debut in The Original Series , but Kirk's version of the Federation starship remains the most well-recognized version in popular culture. This is due, in part, to the hero ship's innovative appearance—Gene Roddenberry's design rules prevented the vessel from being just another generic flying saucer.

Yet few people deserve more credit for the Enterprise 's design than artist Matt Jefferies, who played a crucial role in crafting the Constitution -class starship. Jefferies' finest work has come to define the franchise, with this version of the Enterprise appearing throughout the Star Trek canon. Of all the ships to appear in The Original Series (and in Trek ) as a whole, none is more iconic than Kirk's USS Enterprise .
