I don't have anything against organized tours, but my husband and I have traveled both ways and we definitely prefer to go by ourselves. We are both really interested in archeology and photography, and we knew that a half-day at Machu Picchu - or even 2 half-days - wouldn't be enough. Plus we wanted the flexibility of being able to be at the site when the light is at the best.

The 2 biggest concerns I had about going by ourselves were the language barrier (we don't speak Spanish) and the logistics of getting from point A to point B, but both were OK.

We listened to Spanish language CD's for about 6 months prior to the trip. It wasn't always enough, but it definitely helped. This is such a touristy place that many people spoke at least a little more English than I speak Spanish. We had a couple of taxi drivers who didn't speak much English at all, but in one case the driver called our hotel on his cell phone for assistance and in another case a helpful passerby came to our rescue.

Our hotel in the Sacred Valley had a couple of taxi drivers that were at the hotel every day for guests to use. We may have paid a little more than if we had stayed in Ollantaytambo where there are a lot of drivers competing for your business, but rates were pretty competitive and we knew our guys were safe drivers.

Like others we calculated that, even with taxis and entrance fees, we saved more than $1000 per person by doing the trip ourselves. Along with money saved and great photos, biggest reward was knowing that I had put together the trip myself.

Thanks for posting...

Nice to hear you had a great time, but you are not giving us any of your tips to share with other travelers, please do.

I think there are some tips here such as: plan your own trip to save money, learn a little Spanish if you can to make things easier, and see if your hotel can help you arrange transportation. But here are a few more:

Pisac and Ollantaytambo: both sites are big with a lot to see. You can spend a good 3-4 hours at each, not including souvenir shopping nearby. O has a bunch of ruins on the mountains across from the fortress you can climb to on your own though it's not for the faint of heart.

Altitude sickness: felt it, recommend getting medication just in case. Flew into Lima and noticed a dull headache starting about an hour later. Next day flew to Cusco and really felt it - more headache and felt faint, off-balance. Transferred to SV and took it easy that day, took pills, drank cocoa tea, avoided alcohol and red meat. By day 3 of trip felt fine and stopped taking pills.

Cold: we only went to SV, MP and Cusco so can't speak for other places but we didn't have a problem either with our clothing or lack of heat in any hotels. At night wore a cotton long-sleeved sweater and a fleece jacket over a t-shirt. It was fine. If you're not treking you won't be out long at night anyway.

I am looking to travel to Peru in november. We will have 16 days for traveling. I am trying to plan our trip myself. I speak fluent Spanish but still get concerned when planning this trip.

We then have a few extra days that I am trying to decide on how to spend those days - possibly amazon or Colca Canyon?

I have 3 separate travel guide books, but they only make me more nervous!

How much do taxis cost and are there entry fees (how much) to the places you went?

Carolyn, San Diego CA

Taxis in Peru do not have a taximeter, you have to negotiate the fare.

They are cheap anyway.

Better to catch them via your hotel, its expensier, but safer.

Just do a little research on this forum and you will find answers to most of your questions.

I know exactly how you feel. We are family of 6 and I have almost finalised our 5 week trip to South America. It has been a massive task and I have been very close to organising tours a couple of times. But, I perservered and have eventually ended up with what I think is a great itinerary. I did cheat a little in the beginning as I had absolutely no idea in what order to visit places, so I contacted a South American agency here in Sydney and pretended that I was interested in them organising the whole trip. I advised them of all the places I wanted to go and then they sent me an itinerary!!

We leave towards the end of December.

2 nights Lima

Lima - Puerto Maldonado

4 day Amazon tour

Puerto Maldonado - Cuzco - Sacred Valley

2 nights Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo - Aguas Calientas - MP

Afternoon return to Cuzco

3 nights Cuzco

Overnight bus Cuzco - Arequipa

2 nights Arequipa

2 day tour Colca Canyon

Colca - Puno

1 night Puno

day Lake Titicaca

Puno - Copacobana - Sun Island

1 night Copacobana

Copacobana - La Paz

We then continue our trip in Bolivia and onto Rio, Iguazu Falls and Buenos Aires.

Booking the accommodation was easy using Trip Advisor. It's the logistics of getting from A to B that's been a bit scary. Hoping that it will all fall into place when the time comes.

I have actually done an Excel Spreadsheet of all our flights and hotels to make sure that I have all info at my fingertips.

I'm sure I have saved thousands and thousands of dollars, especially as we are a group of 6.

Good luck, once you get stuck in, I think you will find it becomes easier and don't be afraid to post questions on TA. Everyone is very helpful and only too happy to pass on their knowledge.

Thanks for the good advice

I think i'll have to dust off my excel skills

I have actually spent 6 weeks in Ecuador traveling that country; however I also had a "homebase" with a host family. I knew a lot just being there with people who lived there.

I think I just need to dive in, use the skills I have and some of these tips - I agree - it's the travel from point A to point B that sometimes scares me most.

My highlight was the Inca trail. Exhilarating, energy sapping but awesome. The guides on the trail were simply the best. Without their guidance, motivation and expert knowledge I don't think I would have made it. I don't think G-Adventures can be beaten.

Waldir, who was our tour guide during the time in Peru was absolutely amazing. He was always available when we had a question and needed to reach him. You are very lucky to have such a professional person like Waldir and all of the amazing tour guides on your team.

Loved Peru. I found the people take great pride in their cities, culture and history and it shows in how clean the streets are, how great the food is and how wonderful the guides are. Loved the wildlife, the scenery and archeological sites too. My only downside was the airport.. Delayed flights and when trying to return home, no signage to show the directions from domestic (Cusco to Lima) to international section of airport. When I asked for help, I was told to go out the door, come back in the door next to it, only to find out that I needed to go outside, go to section adjacent and then go upstairs to departures which also had no sign there for "international departures". The LATAM staff gave me the run around on my luggage. One person said it would go automatically to Newark another said pick up your luggage in Lima and transfer to United. My luggage never arrived in Lima nor in Newark. When I arrived in Newark the United people said that LATAM was lying as it is never sent on directly and had to be collected and transferred by hand in Lima. I had to file a lost baggage claim upon final arrival in Canada . Still waiting for news.

Alpaca expeditions was wonderful - We booked through Tourradar due to allowing us to pay the same in AUD that alpaca directly would make us pay in USD and we didnt have all the extra international fees on top. Cant complain about Tourradar's process - dealt directly with the company once booked. Would use them again. Marisol and Yoel were amazing guides - ask for them if you can! They had the best banter and brought such a warm and family energy to the group (even though theyre just friends)

My husband and I had the best time on our tour and it was truly all thanks to our amazing tour guide Wilber. His knowledge is incredible and truly made it an enriching tour. He made me appreciate the amazing feats of the Incas and there is no way I would have enjoyed out time as much without his guidance. He made sure we had the best experience possible, adjusting the schedule to make it work for us and it truly gave up the best experience we possibly could have had. Thank you Wilber!!

Ultimate Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu - 5 Days

If I had only a couple of words: this was the best trek ever. If you care to read some more, please do. The trek: Most beautiful trek I have ever done; because of the variety of landscape we saw: mountains, glaciers, jungle, pampas. It’s liking hiking through different countries. The guide: Fernando was the best guide we could ask for. Kind, funny, knowledgeable, responsible and passionate about his job. He told us so much about Andean history and culture, but also about plants and people. When we reached Macchu Picchu it was as if we finally understood a little bit about it all. The team: wow! What they carried and made for us, made me feel so grateful and happy. They set up our tents, and were so creative when it came to food. They even made me a birthday cake, I still don’t know how they fixed it. The company: they invest in relationships with local people. They care about the environment and make their choices accordingly. Just note that, if you go for a very cheap price, someone else has to ‘pay’ for that. Everyone in our group was conscious of this. It was an adventure I’m forever grateful for, I still feel the same way two weeks later, writing this from a beach in Galapagos ❤️

04 Day Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - Small Group Service

Since past years we dreamed with visit Peru and take the inca Trail to Machu Picchu, a dream we fulfilled and one of the most memorable ones. Me and my partner did the 4 day inca trail with Inkayni Peru Tours. We were the only 2 in our group, which initially we were a little disappointed about, but it turned out to be a huge bonus. Our guide Javier also accompanied us to Huayna Picchu, which was another highlight of our trip. During the trip we had a lot of delicious local food prepared by porters. We had a very nice trip in the beautiful Andes. These memories will last us a lifetime. A huge thank you to Inkayni Peru Tours and our crew for an unforgettable trek!!

Hiking The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu & Sacred Valley

Inkayni Peru Tours is an amazing tour operator with impeccable services. From the beginning of our experience when we received the welcome at the airport until the end when we got dropped off. Initially, we were just looking to book the 4 day tour, then, after to talk with someone of the sales agents, we realized that we need a complete service with accommodations and transfers during our staying in Cusco. So, I’m happy to have booked the complete package. The Sacred valley and inca trail were extremely incredible our tour guide made the whole experience absolutely unforgettable. Machu Picchu itself is breathtaking and thanks to Paolo, our day was simply "perfect". We do not have enough thanks to this incredible company.

This was the best trip I have ever done! Empe our tourg uide was absolutely amazing and took us out for diner almost every night in Cusco, she showed us around and told us a lot about the Peruvian culture. She was the best! Our tour guide Vanja on the Quarry Trail and the whole crew (chefs and horesmen) did a great job! I never imaged to camp and hike in den Andes like this. It was breath-taking and I wish I could have done it a little longer. I will definitely be back and I would love to see Empe and Vanja maybe on another tour. Lots of love and a big THANK YOU, Mareike

We had a fantastic experience! Eddie and Toro were wonderful guides. They were very educational, thoughtful, and fun. Without them I definitely would not have made it. The chef Balbino made wonderful food, and it was so wonderful to have the guides and porters from the Sacred Valley.
Amazing experience! The tour moves quickly so you see a lot in a short amount of time, which is exactly why I love these types of tours. I couldn't of asked for a better guide or group.
