Sharing is caring!

It’s a Scotland bucket list activity, especially if you’re a Harry Potter fan, so fortunately it’s possible to do a 1 day Jacobite steam train tour from Edinburgh to ride the famous steam train!

Following an 84-mile route, the Jacobite steam train runs from Fort William to Mallaig on the Scottish coast.  The train runs daily but only between early April and the end of October. Tickets to ride the Jacobite train can sell out fast as do spots on the Jacobite steam train tours from Edinburgh.

Fortunately, the Jacobite train tours from Edinburgh have a certain number of tickets pre-allocated to them each season, so this means that you’re more likely to find a ticket via the Jacobite train tours for your specific dates – especially if you’re booking more last minute.

A brief history of the Jacobite Steam Train and the Glenfinnan Viaduct

Jacobite steam train going across a viaduct in a valley

The Jacobite steam train has been in operation since 1984. It is currently operated by West Coast Railways but has had several operators over the years.

The 84 mile route runs from Fort William, beside the tallest mountain in Scotland – Ben Nevis. It then travels to Mallaig on the coast, taking in stunning scenery, lochs, rivers and mountains with stops at the following villages along the way: Glenfinnan, Lochailort, Arisaig, Morar and Mallaig being the final destination.

Interestingly, Arisaig is also Britain’s most westerly mainland railway station.

The train and the route itself are also often called The Hogwarts Express, thanks to the use of the train and the Glenfinnan Viaduct in the world-famous Harry Potter movies.

You cross Glenfinnan Viaduct in the early part of your journey, as you reach the first stop of Glenfinnan from Fort William.

The Viaduct is Victorian and was built between 1897 and 1901. It sits at the top of Loch Shiel – another filming location used in the Harry Potter movies.

A Jacobite steam train day tour from Edinburgh

A cottage with golden coloured hills in the background

There are a limited number of Jacobite train day tours from Edinburgh, particularly ones that are at an affordable price. But this Jacobite train tour day trip from Edinburgh provides excellent value for money.

The tour includes a friendly and knowledgeable local tour guide who even manages to make the long coach journey entertaining! The tour includes:

  • Return tickets for the Jacobite Steam Train from Fort William
  • Transport for the whole day by luxury coach which has toilets on board
  • Packed breakfast
  • Stops in Glencoe to see the magnificent Highlands on the way
  • Stop at Pitlochry on the return
  • Knowledgeable tour guide on the coach and the train with you

The best part of this tour (apart from riding the famous steam train of course!) is the local guide who is particularly entertaining and has so much knowledge about the history of Scotland, the Highlands but also Harry Potter filming locations and James Bond too!

Book the tour here.

How long is the Jacobite train tour from Edinburgh?

Hillside path with golden coloured hills

To reach the Jacobite train from Edinburgh, the drive is approximately 3.5 hours from Edinburgh to Fort William, so it’s not short.

Your day starts at the meeting location in Edinburgh at 6am and you return to Edinburgh around 8pm, depending on traffic conditions.

Breakfast is included but taking snacks is definitely a good idea too for the journey out to the Jacobite steam train from Edinburgh.

You’ll be able to stop for lunch in Mallaig before boarding the train for the return journey to Fort William, followed by the bus journey back to Edinburgh.

Stopping at Mallaig

The train journey takes around 2 hours each direction so you are on the train for about 4-4.5 hours of the day, so Mallaig is essential for stretching your legs before the return journey!

Mallaig is a beautiful port town on Scotland’s west coast and it’s just a shame you can’t stay for longer there.

With just one and a half hours between the train arriving and your departure, it’s just enough time to grab some tasty fish and chips, enjoy a stroll around the harbour and through the town itself before heading back to the station for your return journey.

Is this just a Harry Potter themed tour?

Valley with a small cottage and a steam train in the background on a hill

No not at all!

Obviously there are a lot of Harry Potter filming locations in Scotland and the movies are the reason most people know of the steam train and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, but it’s not a Harry Potter themed tour – you can enjoy it whether you’re a Harry Potter fan or not!

If you are looking for a Harry Potter train tour from Edinburgh then this is a good option as you’ll also see the filming locations like Loch Shiel used in the Chamber of Secrets and Rannoch Moor where scenes from the Prisoner of Azkaban were filmed. But the franchise definitely isn’t a big focus from the tour guides.

However, as stated above, the tour guides are local guides with a vast knowledge of Scotland’s history and the local area, not Harry Potter specialists, so the tour is great for everyone.

Riding the Jacobite Steam Train

Jacobite steam train with white steam rising high into the air crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct

Your tickets included on this tour are for the standard class ticket, so it’s important to note that the interior of the standard class isn’t anything special – you’re there for the scenery and the experience, not the interior of the train!

The luxury compartments and First Class tickets start from £79.50 and can be booked here .

The best side to sit on the train (if you’re able to!) is on the left side as you face the direction of travel. This allows you to see the curve of the Viaduct ahead of you as you round the hills and onto the Viaduct section of rail.

Also note that the train doesn’t ‘turn around’ for the return journey, only the locomotive moves to the front of the carriages. So you will be sitting on the same side on the return journey if you’re in the same allocated seats.

Alternative Jacobite Steam Train day trips

If you’d prefer to see different attractions on route or you’re starting from a different city or location, check out these alternative tour options:

  • An alternative Harry Potter train tour from Edinburgh – this does the same journey in reverse
  • Jacobite Steam Train Tour from Inverness
  • Jacobite Steam Train Tour from Glasgow – they recently stopping running the Glasgow tour that includes the train ticket, this tour is similar but only includes seeing the stream train and famous viewpoint, NOT riding the train itself
  • Jacobite Steam Train, Isle of Skye and Highlands 3 day tour – if you want more bang for your buck, check out this 3-day tour which includes the train ride, the Isle of Skye and more, departing from Edinburgh

Summary:  1 day Jacobite Steam Train tour from Edinburgh

Jacobite steam train day trips from Edinburgh are a great and affordable way to see this iconic Scotland attraction, experience the steam train journey and be able to do so in a short space of time to maximise your trip to Scotland.

It’s also a great option for an Edinburgh Harry Potter train tour for fans of the wizarding world but without overdoing it too much! Think of it like a happy medium if you and your party are a mixture of Harry Potter fans and non-fans!

A day tour is the ideal option especially if you are wanting to experience more of the Scottish Highlands but don’t have a vehicle to use yourself. It also takes the hassle out of having to drive and having to book train tickets, car rentals etc separately.

Wilderness and warriors…

Leaving Edinburgh behind on this magical, historic two-day tour, we’ll head north to the Forth Railway Bridge . Snap a photo of this UNESCO World Heritage Site , a memory to treasure and symbol of Scotland. Opened in 1890, the Forth Railway Bridge is a true Scottish icon recognised all over the world for being the first major steel structure, a key milestone in the development of modern railway engineering. To this day, this fantastic piece of history still holds the record for being the world’s longest cantilever bridge.

Over the river to Dunkeld…

As we head over the Firth of Forth, we’ll be making our way to the small highland village of Dunkeld, perfectly perched on the banks of the River Tay, the longest river in Scotland and seventh-longest in the United Kingdom. Enjoy your time in Dunkeld by taking a riverside walk to see the Dunkeld bridge, the largest Scottish bridge built by Thomas Telford, or visit the magical Dunkeld Cathedral. Part ruin, part parish church, this cathedral takes pride of place in this well-preserved historic town, also home to the resting place of the notorious ‘Wolf of Badenoch’, the third surviving son of King Robert II of Scotland. Make sure to explore the town to see the brightly coloured ‘little houses’, a sight which cannot be missed.

The journey north continues…

Leaving this historic Highland town behind, we’ll head further north to the ‘geographical centre of Scotland’ and of the gateways to the Highlands, Pitlochry , for a quick stop and bite to eat. Perched on the edge of the River Tummel, Pitlochry is home to one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, Edradour. Leaving this beautiful town, we’ll once again head north on our journey, taking us through the breathtaking Drumochter Pass . Skirting the stunning peaks of the Cairngorm National Park , you’ll pass the home of five of the UK’s highest mountains.

Through the mountains to Culloden…

Passing Aviemore, we’ll drive via the Clava Cairns , a 500-year-old temple and ancient cemetery. This ancient burial ground features in the well-known ‘Outlander’ books, in the iconic scene when Claire falls through time to the 1700s. From here we’ll continue on to Culloden , the last stand of the Jacobites against the government forces. Explore the battlefield and walk in the footsteps of the hundreds of clansmen who gave their lives for the Jacobite cause or immerse yourself in the interactive history found inside of the Culloden Visitor Centre . Leaving this harrowing battlefield behind, we’ll finally be heading to Fort Augustus , a peaceful little village on the banks of Loch Ness, our overnight stop for this tour.

Overnight: Fort Augustus

Take a steam train back in time…

Enjoy a hearty breakfast before a short journey to Fort William will finally jump aboard the Jacobite Steam Train ! Known for being one of the world’s greatest train journeys, this train ride will take you past Britain’s highest mountain, deepest loch, shortest river and most westerly station. You may know it as the Hogwarts Express ! You’ll cross the viaduct featured in the ‘Harry Potter’ films and pass the Glenfinnan Monument where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at the beginning of the 1745 Jacobite rising before arriving in Mallaig, the end of the famous West Highland Railway . The other half of the group will take this part of the journey to Mallaig in the bus with your driver-guide, giving you the opportunity to see the train cross the iconic Viaduct. Either way, you will be able to sit back, relax, enjoy the ride and don’t forget to take in those unmissable views of the highlands.

Have seafood for lunch at Mallaig…

Get ready to depart as the train and bus arrive into Mallaig , a stunning west coast fishing town, for lunch. Mallaig, ‘Mel Vik’ in old Norse, means sand dune bay, the perfect description for this vibrant port, the end to the ‘Road to the Isles’ . Spend some time learning about Mallaig’s fascinating historical past at the Mallaig Heritage Centre, or sample some of the freshest seafood Scotland has to offer. After a delicious lunch, the groups roles will reverse, with the other half of the group now having the opportunity to take the vintage steam engine for the journey back to Fort William, whilst  your driver-guide will transport the other half of the group along the Road to the Isles for an opportunity to watch as the train passes over the majestic viaduct. When the group re-unities in Fort William, you will begin your journey to the breath-taking scenery of Glen Coe.

The journey home via Glen Coe…

Heading south, you’ll enjoy a drive through Glen Coe , Scotland’s most famous and scenic glen, where the MacDonalds were betrayed. This awe-inspiring glen was carved out centuries ago by glaciers and volcanic explosions to create the stunning mountains we know and love. This beautiful glen may seem a little familiar due to its starring role in one of the ‘Harry Potter’ films. Our journey through Glen Coe takes us to Rannoch Moor , a beauty not to be missed, so stunning it was the perfect place to film a scene in James Bond’s ‘Skyfall’. At 50 square miles of peat bog and marsh, it’s one of Scotland’s last great wildernesses. From here, our last leg of the journey home begins with a drive through Stirlingshire, passing by the likes of Stirling Castle and the Kelpies, before arriving back into Edinburgh.

Attention: Please be advised that the availability of The Jacobite Steam Train experience may be impacted due to ongoing suspensions by the Jacobite Steam Train operator (West Coast Railways). If the train for your booked departure is cancelled, rest assured that your tour will still operate, and you will receive a refund for the steam train portion. Furthermore, you will receive a complimentary boat cruise on the beautiful Loch Ness and a visit to Urquhart Castle- situated on the banks of the Loch.

A great tour with lots of fun and laughter. Our guide, Iain was knowledgeable and gave us good information about each location and had the best jokes. The accommodation in Fort Augustus was clean and comfortable. We were blessed with the best weather all days during the tour which made everything look all the more stunning in the sun! The train ride was beautiful and if you’re a Potterhead, try and get a seat on the left hand side to get the best views of the viaduct.

We did this tour as a surprise for my partner as he always wanted to see Scotland and is a big fan of Harry Potter. Everything on this tour was perfect. Our guide was really funny and you can tell he knows a lot about Scotland, he told us plenty of stories, jokes and interesting facts about Scotland, he also played some beautiful Scottish songs as we were traveling along, great guy. The scenery was really beautiful, out of this world I would say, especially Glen Coe. We had plenty of stops for pictures or food. Our accommodation was comfortable, good breakfast and close to Loch Ness, lovely scenery again. On the second day we took the Jacobite train which was really fun and the best part of the whole tour. Would recommend this tour to everyone who wants to visit Scotland and may be a Harry Potter fan

Steven B made this tour unforgettable! This tour packed in so much into two days but did not feel rushed or slow. We just got back from it. So many unique experiences included. I went with my mother and grandmother, three generations of people to please and Steven B did a fantastic job. I learned so much about the history of Scotland, and he was so engaging throughout the entire tour. He added "wee adventures' throughout, which I loved. We were able to do the Loch Ness ferry to Urquhart castle, which was breath-taking. This was an additional cost but included entry into the castle ruins as well. The BnB we stayed at was Loch Ness Inn which was really nice, so close to the canal. Fort Augustus is a lovely little town. The main event was the Jacobite train which was such a cool experience coming from a Harry Potter Fan. Steven B throughout the trip worked so hard to ensure the best experience for us.

Full Tour Itinerary

Select Day:

Day 1 - London - Edinburgh - Discovering Edinburgh

The whistle blows, and your  express train  glides out of Kings Cross Station in the heart of London, bound for Edinburgh. As you speed northwards to the Scottish Capital, you’ll travel through the Viking City of York,  Durham , famed for its magnificent Cathedral and bustling Newcastle, which straddles the River Tyne.

During the journey, enjoy free WiFi and access to the onboard buffet, where tasty food and drink can be purchased. It will typically take under 4 hours and 30 minutes to reach Edinburgh.

On arrival in Edinburgh, it’s a short walk to your city centre hotel, and after you’ve checked in, Scotland’s Capital City is waiting to be discovered.

Join an open-top bus tour to see many of Edinburgh’s most famous attractions, including the historic  Grassmarket , where many gruesome tales are told. Travel along the wide streets of the Georgian New Town to see grand squares before heading into the medieval Old Town; both these areas have been designated  UNESCO World Heritage Sites .

Hop off to explore mighty Edinburgh Castle and see the Scottish Crown Jewels, known as the Honours of Scotland , and the ancient Stone of Destiny.

When ready, hop aboard the next tour bus to continue your sightseeing adventure.

The remainder of the day is at leisure.

Overnight: Motel One, Edinburgh (or similar)

Day 2 - Edinburgh - The Highland Line - Inverness

Edinburgh is the World’s first UNESCO City of Literature, so after breakfast, why not head out to discover some of its literary connections?

Enjoy a coffee in the café where JK Rowling penned her first Harry Potter novel or visit the historic Greyfriars Kirkyard , where the names on the gravestones gave her the inspiration for the names of her characters.

At lunchtime, make for the railway station to join the ScotRail Inter7City train bound for Inverness. Get ready for a beautiful journey as the Highland mainline is considered one of the most scenic in Scotland.

Travel from Edinburgh northwards towards Stirling, with its grand castle standing guard over the city. Next, travel through Gleneagles station, which serves the famous golfing resort , then across Strathearn to Perth.

“Highland Perthshire” boasts a landscape of towering trees and fast-flowing rivers. After calling at historic Dunkeld and Birnham station, we follow the Rivers Tay and Tummel to arrive at Pitlochry , a pleasant Victorian resort town.

The train will make the ascent through Glen Garry, where there are fine views of the Grampian Mountains, and if you are lucky, a deer herd can often be seen grazing on the heather. Soon we reach the highest point on the British rail network at Druimuachdar Summit.

After leaving lonely Dalwhinnie, the train enters the scenic Spey Valley, where the towering summits of the Cairngorm mountain range provide an impressive backdrop.

On arrival in  Inverness , it’s a short walk to your hotel. Tonight why not seek out some traditional folk music played in a local pub?

Overnight: Premier Inn Inverness City Centre, Inverness (or similar) (3 nights)

Day 3 - Isle of Skye Excursion

Today head for the picturesque Isle of Skye. Leaving Inverness behind, you’ll drive through beautiful Glen Carron, stopping to view the panorama of Loch Carron and the mountains of Applecross.

After crossing “over the sea to Skye”, the magnificent mountain scenery of the Cuillin Hills is our first treat. These soaring peaks dominate the island, first the gentle Red Cuillins, then the jagged and daunting Black Cuillins. There is a photo stop where the alp-like views are at their most impressive.

The delightful town of Portree is the island's largest settlement. During our time here, why not take a stroll down to the harbour? The scene of the pastel-painted houses that overlook the bay makes for a brilliant selfie.

After lunch, we head for the Trotternish Peninsula to see the weird landscapes, including the Old Man of Storr and the Quiraing. We stop at Kilt Rock, where the basalt columns are said to resemble the pleats in a kilt. From the viewing platform, watch as the Mealt waterfall plummets 60m into the sea below.

Back on the mainland, we stop at picturesque Eilean Donan Castle . There is the chance to take photographs of this fairytale castle that featured in many films, including Highlander and The World Is Not Enough.

Enjoy a scenic drive through Glen Shiel, enjoying stunning views of the Five Sisters mountain range. Our return to Inverness will take us along the banks of Loch Ness. We’ll arrive in Inverness city centre around 19:30 hrs.

Day 4 - Jacobite Steam Train Excursion

It’s an exciting day ahead as you look forward to a memorable journey aboard the Jacobite Steam Train , the real Hogwarts Express.

From Inverness tour through the Great Glen and make our way towards Fort William. Head towards Mallaig along the famous “ Road to the Isles ”, one of Scotland’s most famous routes.

Enjoy beautiful views over Loch Eil before stopping to view the impressive Glenfinnan Viaduct, made famous in the Harry Potter movies. You’ll cross the 21 arches of this magnificent viaduct later – by train.

Glenfinnan is also renowned for its connections to Bonnie Prince Charlie, who landed in this part of Scotland in August 1745 to raise his standard at the start of the ill-fated Jacobite Uprising . The haunting monument you can see was built to commemorate the Highlanders who lost their lives fighting for the cause.

Look out for the stunning beaches at Arisaig and hear the sad tale of the Highland Clearances that took place here before reaching the end of the road at Mallaig. This popular fishing port is just the perfect location for a freshly-landed seafood lunch.

At the station, join the train and take your seats. Departure time comes, and as the train puffs its way out of the station, an unforgettable journey along the famous West Highland Railway begins.

The steam-hauled train will pass Scotland’s shortest river, deepest loch and highest mountain along the 42-mile trip. Have your camera at the ready for a souvenir photo as the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct, just like the Hogwarts Express!

On arrival in Fort William, reboard your coach for a scenic drive back to Inverness.

Day 5 - Inverness - Edinburgh - London

This morning enjoy an early breakfast before heading to Inverness Railway Station, where the Highland Chieftain express train is waiting.

From Inverness, catch a glimpse or two of the Moray Firth before the tracks turn southwards, and you head for the stunning beauty of the Cairngorms National Park . The range of peaks that we will see includes Ben Macdui, Britain’s second-highest mountain.

After passing through Dalwhinnie, with its famous distillery , there are beautiful vistas to enjoy as the train descends through the Grampian Mountains.

As we arrive in Blair Atholl, look out for whitewashed Blair Castle , the seat of the Duke of Atholl. He is the only person in the UK who is allowed his own private army, The Atholl Highlanders.

From Perth, travel through gentle scenery to reach the ancient city of Stirling with its impressive monument to the great Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace .

The train will follow the same route as your northbound journey from Edinburgh and is scheduled to arrive at London’s Kings Cross Station by late afternoon (subject to change).

Customer Reviews Overall Rating:

My sister and I have nothing but praise for Scottishtours. Every aspect of our tour was organised so well, right down to directions to various pick up points. Definitely will use them again in the future.

Scottish Tours is great about answering questions on the fly, and they have a great nose for budget hotels that still deliver value. Believe me, we picked out our own budget hotel in London and whew. What a mistake. It was a miserable week. Our Scotland portion was definitely what we had wanted the entire time.

Prior to booking we had never heard of Scottish Tours, booking through them was a bit of a gamble. A good gamble though, our experience was excellent. David was an excellent communicator and all the tour information and guidance we received was extremely well prepared and organized. We highly recommend Scottish Tours.

Scotland is renowned for its stunning scenery and offers some of the best train journeys in the world. Many of these are on a traditional steam train.

Taking a steam train from Edinburgh can be a great day trip, no matter what your destination. Whether you’re keen to spend most of the day on the train or simply want to get from A to B while travelling in style, here are some of our favourite steam train trips from Edinburgh.

Edinburgh to Glasgow

Rail travel between Scotland’s two largest cities will take you through the Central Belt, which is the country’s most densely populated area. Look out for Glasgow’s high-rises as you approach the skyline here.

Once you get to Glasgow, there is plenty to see and do , from shopping and sightseeing to visiting the medieval Glasgow Cathedral and exploring the city’s museums.

Edinburgh to Pitlochry

Located just two hours from Edinburgh, Pitlochry is one of Scotland’s most scenic and vibrant places to visit, and it’s totally doable in a day. Your trip here will be made all the more perfect when travelling on an Edinburgh steam train, especially if you have a love for traditional rail travel.

Along the route, you’ll travel through Falkirk, Stirling, Dunblane, and Perth, taking in plenty of Scotland’s most beautiful scenery.

When you get to Pitlochry, there are lots of things to do. For families, visit the Enchanted Forest or the Black Castle Ruins while you’re there. If it’s an adults-only trip, consider a stop at Blair Atholl Distillery and learn how they make their famous single-malt whiskies.

Known as the gateway to the Highlands, Pitlochry is home to a renowned theatre, and can also be considered a fishing village thanks to the great salmon fishing here.

Edinburgh to Fife

The route from Edinburgh to Fife is truly breathtaking if you’re travelling by train. After leaving Edinburgh Waverley station , you’ll cross the iconic Forth Bridge. This was the first major steel structure built in Britain and the enabler for a continuous east coast railway route between London and Aberdeen.

From here, you’ll journey along the Fife coast looking out to the North Sea.

Once you arrive in Fife on your day trip, you can visit St Andrews Cathedral or the ruins of St Andrews castle. You can even take a trip to Lomond Hills Regional Park or walk along the Fife coastal path when the weather is warmer and enjoy the impressive views.

Edinburgh to Aberdeen

Journeying on a steam train from Edinburgh to Aberdeen is a great way to experience the Scottish countryside, especially if you can do a day trip on The Aberdonian pulled by the iconic Tornado engine.

With large windows for panoramic views and a restaurant car to really make the most of your time on board, this is a great trip for all the family.

Your route will begin in Edinburgh before you cross Forth Bridge and travel up the Fife coast. From here, you’ll travel onwards to Aberdeen via Montrose and Stonehaven, taking in sensational views from the clifftop.

Once you reach Aberdeen, there’s plenty to do before you return to Edinburgh, from museums and art galleries to stunning gardens and castles.

Edinburgh to the Highlands

The Scottish Highlands offer breathtaking views, whether you enjoy them from a train window or on foot. While many train journeys can take you through the Highlands, there is nothing more magical than a trip on the Jacobite steam train, otherwise known as The Hogwarts Express.

For fans of the Harry Potter films, this Edinburgh steam train journey is a must-do. From Edinburgh, you’ll embark on a round trip taking in the sights of the Forth Bridge, Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glen Coe and the fishing port of Mallaig.

Depending on your route, you might even travel via Fort William and glimpse Scotland’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. Even if the Wizarding World isn’t your thing, the views of the Highlands are not to be missed.

Edinburgh to London

Our guide to steam trains from Edinburgh wouldn’t be complete without mentioning The Flying Scotsman. This iconic train started taking passengers in 1923, travelling the route between the capitals of Scotland and England.

While it was taken out of service in 1963, there are multiple day trips across the UK each year that steam train fanatics can experience. Be sure to keep an eye out for trips departing from Edinburgh.

Edinburgh day trips with Avanti West Coast

Edinburgh Waverley station features on many of our routes in Scotland, no matter where you’re travelling from. You can reach Edinburgh in around five hours from major UK cities including London, Birmingham and Manchester. From Leeds, it’ll take you just three hours on a direct route.

Whether you’re travelling to Edinburgh to take a steam train trip elsewhere in Scotland, or you’re visiting the historic city itself for a weekend, travelling with Avanti West Coast is a no-brainer. Book your tickets in advance and make the most of your savings for your journey.
