Stone Houses of Eastern Pennsylvania

stone house tour bucks county pa

The original section of the Caleb Pusey House dates to 1683, in the English post-medieval vernacular.

This is a storied region, settled by William Penn and at the center of the American Revolution. The historic Brandywine Valley, which runs from Chester and Delaware counties in southeastern Pennsylvania and into the state of Delaware, remains dotted with early stone houses. A rich legacy of old stone buildings survives, too, in the surrounding counties: Montgomery, Berks, Bucks, and Lancaster. English and German settlers, especially Quakers, built these structures during the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Gideon Gilpin House, a very early frame house (with stone addition), was built by an English Quaker.

Take a careful look and you’ll see that different types of stone, and different masonry traditions, are in evidence. House walls are generally made up of rubble, not large dressed stones. (Stones most often came from farm fields being cleared.) The local reddish sandstone and bluish granite are most common. But there is also limestone, mica schist, and a gray-green stone called serpentine. German masons used techniques slightly different from those of the more dominant English, whose work is a reminder of an ancient Cotswold vernacular. The pitch of the roof, pent eaves (between floors), and the design of windows and door are all clues. One part of the house may be stone; another brick or wood-framed, as additions were common. Many houses built after the 1750s are fine, and some are even grand.

Interior of the Wentz homestead, which has been interpreted to Revolutionary times.

Inside, the earliest houses were primitive, often just one room with a large fireplace on an end wall. The hall-and-parlor plan was common by the 1720s. As the 18th century progressed, the symmetrical center-hall, double-pile Georgian plan—the more typical English colonial house—took hold.

The centuries since have seen successive revivals of traditional building in stone, led by restoration architects such as R. Brognard Okie in the 1920s and ’30s and G. Edwin Brumbaugh in the mid-20th century. Today a handful of regional architects are interpreting the old forms, keeping masonry building alive.

The tall gambrel-roofed Keith House was built starting in 1722 for the provincial governor.

Stone House Revival

stone house tour bucks county pa

When Tom and Angie Guzzo of Newtown, Pa., wanted to refurbish the root cellar in their circa-1710 home, the project gave Stone House Revival host Jeff Devlin the perfect excuse to return to his hometown. He transformed the crumbling cellar into a chic hideaway fit for a wine tasting, and while he was at it, gave their living room a new look inspired by the farmhouse’s history.

Jeff Devlin and his crew craft an airy living room with a couple of surprises in the loft upstairs out of a 1770 spring house in Pennsylvania.

This weekend in bucks county: take the historic stone houses driving tour.

stone house tour bucks county pa

Martin Millner

Martin Millner is a realtor based in Bucks County, Pennsylvania...

Looking to get out of the house this weekend but keep your social distancing! Get in your car and take the Stone House Driving Tour in Bucks County. The stone houses, often predating the United States itself, tell the story of the settlers who lived here in the 1700s and 1800s. Many of the historic stone houses have been converted to museums, bed & breakfasts, and many are private homes (so admire from afar).

The tour starts in New Hope and ends in Doylestown.

Here is a link for the driving tour:   https://goo.gl/maps/qTUrEGePEUv

Pearl S. Buck International, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization located near Philadelphia in upper Bucks County, PA, carries on Pearl S. Buck’s legacy of bridging cultures and changing lives through humanitarian aid, intercultural education, and historical tours of the Pearl S. Buck House, a National Historic Landmark museum. Pearl S. Buck was a writer, activist, and humanitarian. She was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Literature for her novel, The Good Earth , and the Nobel Prize in Literature for her body of work. Ms. Buck used the spotlight on her to shine a light on the plight of marginalized people everywhere and to advocate for the civil rights movement in the U.S. She also founded Welcome House (the world’s first international biracial adoption agency) and established The Pearl S. Buck Foundation (now Pearl S. Buck International) to provide international humanitarian aid.

Ms. Buck’s groundbreaking words and work paved the way for greater international and intercultural understanding. They also provided life-changing aid for countless impoverished children.

The Pearl S. Buck House, situated on 67 acres of landscaped lawns and manicured gardens, was the home of Pearl S. Buck and her family. The beautiful and iconic Bucks County stone farmhouse contains a rich, intact collection from the extraordinary (the typewriter on which she wrote The Good Earth ) to the ordinary (a closet full of board games her family played). Out of 40 historic house museums dedicated to women in the U.S., the Pearl S. Buck House contains the largest intact collection owned by a single woman and female author. Two facilitator and docent-led tours are available – the traditional biographical Life & Legacy tour and the interactive, civic-minded Taking Action tour – as well as a self-guided tour of the grounds and gardens.

The grounds of the estate also contain Pearl S. Buck’s gravesite, greenhouse, award-winning gardens, Cultural Center (a former barn where Ms. Buck held community events), the Estate Pavilion (which houses special events and weddings), and the Welcome Center (which contains the International Gift Shop, the Exhibit Gallery, the Janet L. Mintzer Conference and Event Center, and the offices of Pearl S. Buck International).

Year-round programs include : tours of the Pearl S. Buck House National Historic Landmark museum; school field trips; group tours with special pricing, a Writer’s Guild, and writing classes.

Located between New York and Philadelphia, during the Colonial days Bucks County was heavily traveled via the Old York Road, built in the early 18th century. The road started in Philadelphia and crossed the Delaware River at New Hope, continuing on through Hunterdon County and Middlesex on the way to Elizabeth, NJ. Naturally, stagecoach stops, taverns, and inns sprung up along its route, which is one reason there is such a huge number of stone houses along our roads.

New Hope is the most famous town in Bucks County. It was originally called Well’s Ferry, named after the first ferry operator on the Old York Road to New Jersey. It became a mill town in the late 1700s. When Benjamin Perry’s mill burned to the ground in 1790, he rebuilt more and called them “New Hope Mills”. Hence, the name was born. (Perry’s mansion is in the center of town.) Logan Inn, built in 1727, was originally called the Ferry Tavern. It’s the oldest continually-run inn in Bucks County and one of the five oldest in the United States. New Hope is also famous for the Bucks County Playhouse, built in 1939 from a converted 1790 gristmill. It has a long history of Broadway plays and has hosted such luminaries as Grace Kelly, George C. Scott, Liza Minnelli, William Shatner, Bob Fosse, Robert Redford, among a stunning list of celebrities.

For bicyclists, joggers, and walkers, the Delaware Canal is a state park with a towpath that runs all the way from Bristol to Easton. It was built in the mid-19th century to haul coal, iron ore, and other products from the Lehigh Valley to Philadelphia. Barges were towed by mules, and the canal was built with a system of locks to help control flooding. It meanders in and out alongside the river, through towns such as Washington Crossing, Point Pleasant, Lumberville, New Hope, and Riegelsville. Many homes back to the canal and are coveted real estate acquisitions.

Doylestown was named after William Doyle, proprietor of a public house licensed in 1745; it still stands at the intersection of Main and State streets. The town was selected as the county seat in 1820 and remains so today. One of its most famous residents was Henry Chapman Mercer, the famous archeologist, artifact collector, and tile-maker, who designed and constructed three of Doylestown’s most fascinating buildings. All three buildings are cast-in-place concrete structures. The Mercer Museum holds more than 40,000 artifacts from the Industrial Revolution. The Moravian Pottery & Tile Works is a living history museum that still creates handmade tiles used by Mercer at the turn of the last century; Bucks County residents often purchase these tiles for use in their homes, from counters to fireplace surrounds. The Fonthill Castle was Henry Mercer’s own home, with 44 rooms, over 200 windows, 18 fireplaces, and 10 bathrooms. Mercer tiles are embedded in the concrete all over the house. It, too, is open to the public.

For nature lovers, Bucks County has over twenty parks and wildlife preserves, including Lake Nockamixon, containing 5,286-acres of forests, hiking, camping cabins, golfing, fishing, and boat and canoe rentals on its 10 mile-long lake, as well as a marina. There are many boat ramps to the Delaware River, where people enjoy canoeing, kayaking, as well as tubing. In Point Pleasant you can go rafting as well, with Bucks County River Country.

Hunterdon County NJ

Visitors to Hunterdon County find it to be a great surprise with its quaint river towns, stone houses, historic bridges, and many Bed & Breakfast stopovers. They don’t call New Jersey the Garden State for no reason! Buyers looking for farms or acreage are often amazed to discover that they tend to get more property for their money this side of the river. I’ve also noticed, personally, that homes don’t change hands quite as often; as a result, many old houses retain much of their original character.

stone house tour bucks county pa

Because the Delaware River runs along the west side of the County, tourists are attracted to the many historic towns connected to bridges across the river. The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park runs for seventy miles through all these towns and beyond. It, too, has a towpath for bikes and walkers, just like in Bucks County. The most popular destination is Lambertville, originally a mill town but now a premier weekender attraction. Lambertville Station, once servicing the now-disused railroad tracks, is just one of the many restaurants retaining the old-world atmosphere of this town.

stone house tour bucks county pa

Continuing upriver, the next bridge belongs to Stockton—originally Reading Ferry—another mill town with its famous Prallsville Mill which hosts a variety of artistic and cultural events. Ten miles north, you’ll see Frenchtown (which still celebrates Bastille Day) and Milford, both with their repurposed train stations and Victorian homes. Along the way you can launch your canoe and kayak on the river; inner tubing is also a big summer attraction here because the Delaware is mostly gentle at this point.

stone house tour bucks county pa

Because of its rural nature, Hunterdon County abounds with parks, nature trails, and horse trails. According to NJ.gov, “There are approximately 42,500 horses in New Jersey with 96,000 acres devoted solely to the equine industry.” You’ll also find that land conservation is high on the list here; since 1985 Hunterdon has preserved 433 farms and almost 33,000 acres—more than any other county in the state. That’s a lot to be proud of!
