Mount Tambora (or Tamboro) is an active stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano, on the island of Sumbawa, Indonesia. Sumbawa is flanked both to the north and south by oceanic crust, and Tambora was formed by the active subduction zone beneath it. This raised Mount Tambora as high as 4,300 m (14,100 ft), making it formerly one of the tallest peaks in the Indonesian archipelago.

After a large magma chamber inside the mountain filled over the course of several decades, volcanic activity reached a historic climax in the super-colossal eruption of April 1815. The 1815 eruption is rated 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, the only such eruption since the Lake Taupo eruption in about 180 AD. With an estimated ejecta volume of 160 cubic kilometers, Tambora’s 1815 outburst was the largest volcanic eruption in recorded history. The explosion was heard on Sumatra island (more than 2,000 km (1,200 mi) away). Heavy volcanic ash falls were observed as far away as Borneo, Sulawesi, Java and Maluku islands.

Most deaths from the eruption were from starvation and disease, as the eruptive fallout ruined agricultural productivity in the local region. The death toll was at least 71,000 people (the most deadly eruption in recorded history), of whom 11,000–12,000 were killed directly by the eruption; the often-cited figure of 92,000 people killed is believed to be overestimated.The eruption created global climate anomalies that included the phenomenon known as “volcanic winter”: 1816 became known as the “Year Without a Summer” because of the effect on North American and European weather. Agricultural crops failed and livestock died in much of the Northern Hemisphere, resulting in the worst famine of the 19th century.

During an excavation in 2004, a team of archaeologists discovered cultural remains buried by the 1815 eruption. They were kept intact beneath the 3 m (9.8 ft) deep pyroclastic deposits. At the site, dubbed the Pompeii of the East, the artifacts were preserved in the positions they had occupied in 1815.

SUMBAWA BESAR – DESA PANCASILA – ENTRANCE GATE – POS 1 Early morning continue the trip to Desa Pancasila and arrive in the afternoon. After lunch start trek to Entrance Gate (Pintu hutan Tambora) abour 30 minutes from Pancasila Village, take some rest, check up and water refill. Trek continue to Pos 1 for 3 hours, reach the campsite of Pos 1 and set up the tent. Overnight at Pos 1 in tent.

POS 1 – POS 5 – CEMARA TUNGGAL CAMPSITE Early morning start trek to Pos 2 for 2 hours, check up and water refill and continue trek Pos 3 for 2,5 hours, stop for lunch here. After lunch continue trek to the campsite at Cemara Tunggal. Arrive late afternoon, set up tent and overnight

CEMARA TUNGGAL – MOUNT TAMBORA SUMMIT – DESA PANCASILA Summit attack start at 04.00 and reach the top around 05.30 stay at the summit and waiting for the sun rise. How to Get Saleh Bay

The tour takes you to Labuan Jambu Village, Saleh Bay, where you can witness the majestic whale shark in its natural habitat. If you prefer a faster and more comfortable option, you can fly to Sumbawa Besar from Lombok or Bali. Then continue to Labuan Jambu Village, it takes around 3-4 hours by car to reach Saleh Bay. Many backpackers choose the Ferry from Lombok. Unfortunately, it’s a long drive from Ferry Port in Sumbawa to Jambu Village.

Because of their popularity, however, It is crucial to practice responsible tourism and not disturb the whale sharks or their natural habitat. This includes not touching the animal or getting too close, and following the guidelines set by the tour operators. As more people become aware of the beauty and importance of these gentle giants, we must continue to work towards protecting them and their habitats for generations to come.

• Keep noise to a minimum! As you plunge into the water, enter slowly feet-first, and do not jump from the boat.
• Touching the skin of whale sharks poses an alarming threat, so never touch them.
• Always keep your distance from the whale shark by maintaining at least 3 to 4 meters away.
• Do not use strobes! Keep in mind that excessive flash photography can also stress them up and hurt their vision.

Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?

Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:

• Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
• Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
• How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
• What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
• What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
• What is the current exchange rate for rubles?

Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.

The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.

If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.
