Day 1 - 3: Sabi Sands Game Reserve

Your safari adventure begins today with a flight from Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport to Hoedspruit. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to the lodge for check-in.

Depending on your time of arrival, you may venture out on your first-afternoon game in search of wildlife including the Big 5. Game drives are approximately three and a half hours to four hours long with a stop to enjoy your favorite drink whilst looking upon the most majestic sunset. You return to camp in the early evening to enjoy a perfectly prepared meal under the African sky.  

The next two days will be spent exploring the bushveld on morning and afternoon game drives and if you are feeling adventurous, you may choose to venture out on the mid-morning bush walk with your guide. Bush walks are truly unique as they allow you to discover the beauty of the African wilderness.

Day 4 - 5: Sun City

After your morning game drive and a sumptuous breakfast, you gather your belongings and transfer to Hoedspruit airport to board your scheduled flight to Johannesburg's OR Tambo Airport. On arrival in Johannesburg, you will be met and transferred to Sun City Resort.

After checking in to your room at The Palace of the Lost City, you will have the next few days to explore the world's most unique resort and the various attractions on offer, including the Valley of the Waves with its wave pool, thrilling slides and lazy river. Try your hand at a game of poker at the casino or enjoy a round of golf on the Gary Player Golf Course. Sun City has something for everyone!

Day 6 - 7: Cape Town

After a heart-warming breakfast, you will travel back to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport. Once you arrive you will check in for your scheduled flight to Cape Town. On arrival at Cape Town's International Airport and will be met and transferred to your hotel. 

After checking in to your room, you will have free time to explore top attractions in Cape Town, including the iconic Table Mountain, the bustling V&A Waterfront and top wine estates. Cape Town boasts a number of award-winning restaurants and unique activities. With so much to see and do, we recommend chatting to your travel expert about the different tour options.

Day 8: End of Adventure

Experienced a double booking

Before payment, we experienced an issue of double booking, where suddenly our chosen lodging is only available for 2 out of 4 days. I hope Safari.com can improve their system to avoid this in the future. While it will be an inconvenience on our part to have to move lodging half way, we also understand the high demand of the lodging as we make the booking just 5 months before departure. I really appreciate Nelia's quick action informing us and providing an alternative plan which works for us. Overall it was quite a smooth booking process.

No matter how many times you go on safari, no two experiences will be the same.

There’s nothing quite like an authentic South African safari experience. At Sun International’s Sun City Resort , you can experience the Big Five without having to travel too far from the luxury of your hotel . Whether you are a seasoned traveler who has seen the Big Five so many times that you count them as friends, or a nature-loving novice, each safari adventure is guaranteed to be unique and special.

Here’s our handy guide to making the most of your safari or game drive adventure.

There’s a Season for Everything

No one can argue that the savannahs don’t look picture-perfect during the wet season. However, if you are interested in spotting animals, then consider enjoying your safari vacation during the dry season. In the dry season it is easier to spot animals as the usually lush vegetation dries out revealing some of the animals’ favorite hiding places. Also, thirsty animals are likely to gather around the watering holes for extended periods during the dry season.

Did you know?  In southern Africa the dry season runs from May until October.

The Early Bird Catches the Worm… and the Wildlife

It might be hard to convince yourself to set your alarm and wake up early when you are supposed to be relaxing on holiday, but do it anyway. Sunrise safari game drives are an excellent opportunity to see a variety of wild animals, especially those that are notoriously reclusive. Still having a hard time convincing yourself? Well, think of it this way, on a safari holiday, you have the opportunity to experience the life of the lion – active in the morning and evening, and resting and relaxing during the afternoon.

Safety First!

Although some of the animals may look cute and furry, remember that the animals are wild and potentially dangerous, albeit extremely photogenic! To keep safe, don’t make too much noise and respect your surrounds. To keep the animals safe, reconsider geo-tagging your photos. Poachers have been known to make use of the geo-tags in their hunting.

Did you know?  The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is the only game reserve set in an alkaline ring complex, there are only three such ring complexes in the world.

Silence is Golden

Remember to be courteous to others and keep chatting (and camera sound effects) to a minimum when enjoying a serene game drive. While photos are memories that last forever, remember to be in the moment and to appreciate the beauty beyond the lens.

Take note(s)! It might be difficult to believe that you could ever forget the names of the incredible wild animals that you encounter on your game drive, keep a notebook just in case. FAQs about Sun City Adventure and Pilanesberg Safari

• Safari lodges have guest rooms similar to a hotel with en-suite bathrooms. They are comfortably furnished with facilities normally associated with a hotel rooms, except your rooms are normally set in beautiful wilderness settings, with nature and wildlife around.
• Tented lodges have rooms which are tents on a platform and with a roof and also have en-suite facilities with showers, flush toilets and hot water. Basically all the amenities of a hotel room, except canvas walls and roof.
• The boutique lodges and camps can be very stylish and smart in terms of design and decor, often with very spacious rooms and even going so far in some cases as having plunge pools for each room.
• Eco-camps and smaller tented camps have insect-proof tents with en-suite facilities including a safari shower and flush toilet.  They give a more authentic safari experience but the tents are comfortably furnished with proper beds and you don’t need to bring your own sleeping bag! The emphasis is usually on having excellent guides and great wildlife viewing away from the crowds. Guests often eat together and people travelling alone usually say that they found the atmosphere friendly and enjoyed meeting other like-minded travellers around the campfire in the evening or at dinner.
• The Adventure Camps are a budget option with guests bringing their own sleeping bags and towels. Accommodation is in small dome tented with a mattress on the floor. Each tent has its own nearby cubicle with a flush toilet, safari shower, and wash basin. The Adventure Camps are suitable only for those who don’t mind “real camping” and can put with some degree of “roughing it”. Apart from the accommodation in simple dome tents, the meals and the guiding are the same standards as the higher quality camps and game drives are in 4x4 safari vehicles. For those on a limited budget, the Adventure Camps are a good alternative to the big tourist lodges and minibus tours for those for whom the safari experience is more important than hotel accommodation.
• All game reserves in Madikwe, the Pilanesberg and the Eastern Cape are malaria-free.
• Parents who are travelling with their child but not their spouse and those who wish to send their child on a trip accompanied by someone other than a parent or unaccompanied require an unabridged birth certificate. (It does not affect those travelling within South Africa.)
• An Unabridged certificate is a certificate that reflects the particulars of both parents of the child. All children born in South Africa after 14 March 2013 were issued with a valid unabridged birth certificate automatically and free of charge.
• Everyone born before that and those from countries who do not automatically issue an unabridged certificate must apply for the document well before their travel date.
• The application process for Unabridged Birth Certificate are as follow; You can apply at your nearest Home Affairs office where your Biometric information will be varied. You will need your ID book along as well as your child’s ID number.
• All documents submitted must be originals or certified copies. The Unabridged Birth Certificate costs R75. It can take up to eight weeks to acquire an Unabridged Birth Certificate from the date of application.
• Family safaris are a worthwhile and meaningful experience. Aside from spending quality time with your nearest and dearest under a wide blue African sky, a safari offers invaluable experiences including unique cultural experiences, memorable wildlife sightings, and the opportunity to learn more about nature.
• Some areas won’t suit the family and it's also wise to be aware of malaria in others, however, South Africa has a few malaria-free safari locations and there are other safari lodges and bush camps throughout Africa that cater to young children and toddlers, just do the research beforehand.

The King, African, Royal and Desert Suites are available on request. Day 1 to 2 – Sun City Resort

Feel the excitement build as your flight lands at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where there will be a private car waiting to take you to the famous Sun City Resort, typically a 2 hour 15 minute drive.

Settle in to your room at your choice of either The Cabanas or Cascades Hotel at Sun City, and then explore the fabulous facilities on offer at the resort, including:

• Valley of Waves waterpark, with its large sandy beach and water slides
• Maze of the Lost City, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere
• South African Hall of Fame, celebrating national icons
• Sun Central leisure centre, with shops, restaurants and a cinema
• Children’s activities, including mini-golf, playgrounds and trampolining
• Two golf courses, one with Nile crocodiles in the lake on the 13th hole!

In the evening you can take your pick from the numerous bars and eateries at the resort, then, if you’re feeling lucky, head to the legendary Sun City Casino.

Day 3 to 5 – Pilanesberg National Park

Today it’s safari time! After breakfast at Sun City you’ll be driven to the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge in Pilanesberg National Park, a 20 minute journey.

Located on the slopes of an ancient volcano, Pilanesberg National Park offers excellent wildlife viewing with a stunningly scenic backdrop. Elephant and white rhino are common, as are giraffe, hippo, zebra and numerous antelope species. Keep your eyes peeled as there’s a good chance to see lion and hyena, and, if you’re fortunate, leopard, cheetah and buffalo.

Your stay at Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge includes one game drive into the reserve each day, but you can pre-book additional game drives before you travel.

There’s also a swimming pool at the lodge, animal hide, mini-golf, children’s playground, cocktail lounge and bar.

Day 6 to 7 – Sun City Resort

After the thrill of your safari head back to Sun City to try out the activities you haven’t done yet, or simply relax by the swimming pool, a cold drink in hand.

The best time to visit sun city.

Set on the edge of the Kalahari, Sun City sits under blue skies for most of the year. The super-dry May to October period is generally seen as the best time to visit Sun City, especially if you are planning to add a Big 5 safari at nearby Madikwe Game Reserve or the Kruger Park. This is when game viewing is at its easiest and the weather at its most comfortable. Note that June and July bring cold weather to Sun City – you’ll need to wrap up well in the evening and on morning game drives.
