Settle into your beautifully appointed suites aboard the Antara Ganges Voyager in Kolkata (a city formerly known as Calcutta founded by the British Raj in 1773), the gateway to our journey along the world & holiest river, the sacred Ganges. Welcomed on board with a refreshing beverage followed by a safety briefing you embark between 1600 -1900 hrs from the Kolkata jetty. This evening, delight in the Cruise Director’s Gala dinner and welcome reception.

Late night or early morning depending on tide timings, you set sail along the Hooghly River to reach the fishing port of Namkhana, the gatewayof the Sundarbans. You cruise past the Diamond Harbour & Kedgeree towards the Bay of Bengal. Sunderbans are the world’s largest delta mangrove forest and habitat of the famous Royal Bengal Tiger. Visit the fishing port of Namkhana (time permitting) or sail forward towards Sunderbans to visit protected areas.

Morning arrive at Boney camp Watch tower and to have first introductions to the mangrove forests . Later we sail in the Matla river to Hero Bhangra islands and disembark in country boat after lunch to visit Netidho pani area and then proceed to Bali island for overnight stay.

After an early start we ride on the country boat through mangrove creeks to the Dobanki Watchtower after visiting Sudhanyakhali and enjoy a canopy walk to view the riveting flora and fauna. This canopy walk is at an elevation of 20 feet from the ground and is about half a kilometer in length. Dobanki also has a Deer Rehabilitation Center. We transfer to the ship for late lunch and sail to Namkhana

Early this morning we sail back to Kolkata enjoying breakfast and lunch on board. Disembark in the evening .

KHULNA-HARBARIA-KOTKA-KOCHIKHALI-KARAMJAL – KHULNA 

Program: 3 Days & 2 Nights. 

1st. Day:   Our vessel awaiting in Khulna Rupsha ferry ghat early in the morning within 6:00 am. Then start cruise towards the Sundarban forest. On the way, the boat will stop at Dhangmari /  Chandpai Forest station. Take the permit & pay the fees and take 2 forest armed guard then visit Harabia Forest Office.  The cruising will continue till Kotka upon arrival.

2nd. Day:   Very early in the morning take the small boat for cruise through the small canal for bird watching trip inside forest. Back to the ship and take breakfast then walk through the Mangrove forest and climbing the watch tower to Jamtala sea-beach for sunbath, back to ship  then the boat will resume its journey towards the Forest which will continue till Kochikhali.Upon arrival, the accompanying Guide will lead you towards the Kochikhali Forest Office, where you will find plenty of deer, Monkey, birds etc. Back to the boat, snacks will be served. On this evening, Bar-B-Q dinner will serve. Our vessel will start in the evening journey to Dhangmari/Chandpai forest office upon arrival and stay overnight.

3rd. Day:   After breakfast we will visit the Karamjal forest office and resume its journey towards Khulna. On the way, Take a stopover for surrender forest permission and get down arms guard.  We shall reach Khulna in the evening.       End…………..

7 Top Sundarban Tour Operators and Packages

There are many Sundarban tour operators that offer different types of package tours to the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal. Most are predefined group tours with fixed itineraries and can either be day tours, overnight, or multiple nights with set accommodations included. You will be picked up from Kolkata and dropped back there and can either stay aboard a boat or on land. Hotels and resorts also provide their guests with tour packages.

Help Tourism Sundarbans Jungle Camp

Help Tourism specializes in purposeful, eco-friendly travel to natural areas in east and northeast India. The organization has its own "resort", the Sundarbans Jungle Camp on Bali Island, and boats for river cruises. The resort was built in partnership with locals to provide them with a livelihood and reduce tiger-human conflict. Its six comfortable, ethnic thatched cottages with modern attached bathrooms are located on the banks of the Bidya river. Locals are all employed in the running of the resort and as guides.

Tour packages of various lengths from two to four nights are available. Expect to pay around 40,000 rupees for a private three-day package for two people. This includes transport from Kolkata, accommodations, all meals, boat cruises, naturalist and local guide, park entrance fees, village experience, and country boat ride. Special birding tours are also possible. Bookings can be made through the Help Tourism website, although unfortunately, it's not very ​user-friendly.

Tour de Sundarban

Tour de Sundarban (also known as Backpackers) has its own exclusive purpose-built accommodations and boats as well. The solar-powered Eco Village, located on Satjelia island, has 20 mud cottages with attached western bathrooms, hammocks, and a community center for travelers to hang out in. The company was founded by three "brothers" (they are actually an uncle, nephew, and cousin), who were so inspired by a visit to the Sundarbans that they decided to start taking other people on trips there.

Their tours are most suited to energetic, adventurous and sociable people, who are not looking for luxuries—but rather a village feel, fun ambiance, and value for money. The accommodations are rustic and local transport, including ferries and rickshaws, is used (which is all part of having an authentic experience).

Two and three-day packages are offered, as well as day tours. Their rates include transport, accommodation, Bengali food, permits, boat safari, village walk, and evening performances from local musicians. Expect to pay 5,500 rupees per person for two night, three days. There is an option to spend one night on the boat. Tours are usually limited to 15 people. One-day tours are possible for groups of four or more. The cost is 3,000 rupees per person.

Sundarban Chalo

Sundarban Chalo is another tour company, run by a group of four brothers, that provides budget backpacker-style tours to the Sundarbans. The tours are similar to those offered by Tour de Sundarban. The main difference is the accommodations, which are non-exclusive. Guests stay in basic cottages at a "resort" in Pakhiralay on Gosaba Island, near where the main market is. Again, don't expect luxuries or resort-style facilities. The tour includes a sunset at the Sundarban Bird Jungle, local village walk, and visits to Hamilton Bungalow and Rabindranath Tagore Bungalow. Sundarban Chalo also operates a day tour from Kolkata. The price for group tours ranges from 2,800 rupees per person for one day, increasing to 5,300 to 6,800 rupees per person for three days. The company conducts the tours using its own boat, built in 2015.

Sundarban Eco Tourism

Based in Gosaba, at the entrance to Sundarbans National Park, Sundarban Eco Tourism is popular with domestic Indian tourists. The company has been in business since 2015 and offers reasonably priced tour packages ranging from one to three days. The tours depart from Kolkata, and guests can opt to travel either by train (the cheapest way) or car. Expect to pay 2,600 rupees per person for a one-day package by car. A three-day package by car costs 5,000-7,000 rupees per person, depending on the number of jungle safaris. Accommodations are provided in decent budget hotels in Pakhiralay.

If you'd prefer to stay on a boat rather than on land, and you're looking for a private and personalized tour experience with a touch of luxury, check out Sundarban Houseboat. The unique boat has been specially designed and renovated to provide ​inviting classy hotel-style accommodations. You won't need to sacrifice comfort to stay on this boat. There are three bedrooms, all with attached western bathrooms, that can accommodate groups of 14 to 25 people in total. Facilities include air conditioning, flat screen TVs in all rooms, living and dining room with sofas, kitchen with gourmet chef, sun deck with loungers, library, games, and movies.

Packages are available for a duration of one to four nights (or more, on request!), visiting various watchtowers, islands, and villages. The boat can be hired exclusively, or on a per room basis. Rates vary according to guest requirements. Book as far in advance as possible because it is popular!

Vivada Sundarban Cruises

Another option for a luxury Sundarban cruise is aboard Vivada's M.V. Paramhamsa. This huge cruiser has four decks with 16 state cabins of 165 square feet and, 10 state cabins of 135 sqaure feet, as well as a sun deck, bar, restaurant, coffee shop, and massage parlor with steam and sauna room. The boat sails to the Sundarbans weekly from Kolkata, with three-night packages available. Day trips and excursions along creeks are organized in a smaller vessel, and there are numerous opportunities for village visits. Cultural programs also take place in the evenings on the boat's sundeck. Rates start from around 50,000 rupees per person for three nights.

West Bengal Tourism

Government-owned West Bengal Tourism operates popular one-night and two-night budget cruise packages to the Sundarbans, staying aboard their boats. The organization has two large cruisers, Sarbajaya (the better of the two) and Chitralekha. The one-night tour package includes visits to Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, and Dobanki watchtowers. The two-night package includes an additional visit to Jhingakhali watchtower.

What you need to keep in mind when booking these tours is that the boats can not travel through the more narrow waterways due to their large size. Being restricted to wide waterways means less chance of wildlife sightings. Plus, these are group tours with up to 50 people. Expect to pay around 6,500 rupees per person for two nights.

1st. Day:   Our vessel awaiting in Khulna Rupsha ferry ghat early in the morning within 6:00 am. Then start cruise towards the Sundarban forest. On the way, the boat will stop at Dhangmari /  Chandpai Forest station. Take the permit & pay the fees and take 2 forest armed guard then visit Harabia Forest Office.  The cruising will continue till Kotka upon arrival.

2nd. Day:   Very early in the morning take the small boat for cruise through the small canal for bird watching trip inside forest. Back to the ship and take breakfast then walk through the Mangrove forest and climbing the watch tower to Jamtala sea-beach for sunbath, back to ship  then the boat will resume its journey towards the Forest which will continue till Kochikhali.Upon arrival, the accompanying Guide will lead you towards the Kochikhali Forest Office, where you will find plenty of deer, Monkey, birds etc. Back to the boat, snacks will be served. On this evening, Bar-B-Q dinner will serve. Our vessel will start in the evening journey to Dhangmari/Chandpai forest office upon arrival and stay overnight.

Karmajal is one of the wonderful visiting place in sundarban. To appreciate and to view the most precious species of Bangladesh’s wildlife, thousands of visitors make their way to Karamjol, a ranger station deep in the forest that also serves as a deer-breeding center. Bangladesh has some exquisite wildlife species that are unique to the country, and Karamjol is one of the gateways to the majestic wildlife sanctuary, Sundarban.

Visitors who are interested in catching a glimpse of the breathtaking wildlife of Bangladesh at Karamjol and Sundarban must first gain permission from the Forest Officer before entering the forest, and vaccines against Cholera must be taken before leaving for Karamjol. Other recommended items for the trip include dressing according to the tropical climate, comfortable walking shoes or boots with rubber soles, sufficient drinking water, insect repellent, a medical kit, anti-diarrhea medication and anit-malarial medication is also suggested.

From Karamjol, guided tours of the Sundarban Wildlife Sanctuary can be arranged. In the year 1966, the 38 500 square kilometers of Sundarban was declared a wildlife sanctuary and, therefore, hunting in this area is strictly prohibited and illegal. The preservation and conservation of rare and endangered species, such as the Royal Bengal Tigers, are the primary concern of this national park. Sundarban is proud of the fact that they now have an estimated four hundred Royal Bengal Tigers that live in peace within the sanctuary and the spotted deer population has risen to approximately thirty thousand individuals.

THE SUNDARBANS

The Sundarbans, where the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers outflow through a vast delta into the Bay of Bengal, consists of 10,000 square kilometres of mangrove, part in West Bengal and part in Bangladesh, and declared as National Parks and World Heritage Sites in each country. This is the largest mangrove forest on the planet. The excitement of any Sundarban exploration is the sighting of an often-swimming great Bengal tiger.

Sailing from Kolkata down the Hooglie River we enter the Sundarban park area and over two days explorations are made by smaller country boats accompanied by experienced park rangers on the West Bengal side. There are 453 fauna in the Sundarban, not to mention varied bird and reptilian life with lots of crocodiles. Treks on foot are offered and village visits offer an insight into life in the Sundarban. In the evening locals come on board to perform folk theatre.

DAY 1 KOLKATA - THE SUNDARDANS

11:00am embarkation at Kolkata Botanical Garden to cruise through the splendours of riverside Kolkata and down the Hooglie River to enter the Sunderbans and explore the mangrove forested back waters. During the cruise lunch will be served and afternoon activities include yoga classes, local speciality cooking demonstrations, a lecture by our on-board naturalist and after dinner a cultural dance programme.

DAY 2 BHAGABATPUR ISLAND - JHARKHALI TIGER REHABILITATION CENTRE

Moor off the Bhagabatpur Island to visit the crocodile project there. These are the largest estuarine crocodiles in the world. After lunch travel by country boat to the Jharkhali Watchtower and on to Jharkhali Tiger Rehabilitation Centre. It will be possible to trek into the Sunderban Tiger Reserve from here accompanied by a park ranger.

DAY 3 SUNDARBAN TIGER RESERVE - DOBANKI DEER REHABILITATION CENTRE - BARREN ISLAND

Early rise to travel by country boat to the Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower which is also located in the Sudhanyakhali camp of the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. Return to ship for breakfast and later visit the Dobanki deer rehabilitation centre travelling by country boat through swamps. Visit a local village for a walk ashore to see the unique way of life in the Sunderban and go ashore on ‘Barren Island’ with its white sandy beaches for an evening barbeque and cocktails. Return to Kolkata sailing through the night.

DAY 4 KOLKATA

After breakfast disembark by 09:00am at the Botanical Garden Jetty, Kolkata.

Day 1: kolkata to sudarbans.

Start for Kolkata to Sundarban, explore Gosaba Island, Visit Hamilton & Beacon Bungalow, and a journey to the only Mangrove Tigerland on the earth.

On the first, as we set our Kolkata to Sundarban journey, you can either travel by –

Canning local train at 8:28 A.M. from Sealdah station , and Canning to Sonakhali by Reserved Auto, our tour guide will received you from Sealdah Railway Station.

Or plan a car trip from Esplanade (7.30 AM)/ Science City (8.00 AM) to the Sonakhali Ferry Ghat, our driver will pick up you.

So don’t worry, you can choose any one package as per your needs.

On reaching Sonakhali ferry ghat , our crew members will welcome you, a delectable and authentic Bengali breakfast of Radha Bhallavi or Luchi with Alur Dam , Rosogolla , and a steaming cup of tea will be served to you.

Today we will roam through the narrow creeks & Canals also Visit 3 different Watch towers & Five River Junction.

• On the second day, from around 7:30 A.M to 8:00 A.M, we will travel through the Sundarban safari through our boat after the bed tea.At breakfast , a wholesome plate of mouth-watering Naan, chana masala along with sweet and tea or coffee will be served to you.
• The Sundarban tour guide then joins us to guide us through the Sajenkhali Tiger Reserve. You will experience thrill and adrenaline rushes as the boat safaris through the islands, narrow creeks , and rivers.We will pass across so many incredibly beautiful creeks such as Pirkhali, SarakKhali, Gazikhali, Deul Bharani, and Bonbibi Bharani on this Sundarban tour .It is a great deal of adventure in the Tiger Reserve area where you get to see right in front of your eyes so many Wildlife like the crocodile, wild boar, spotted deer, monitor lizard, snakes, endless varieties of birds, etc.Not to forget, there are chances you can spot a Royal Bengal Tiger too.

At 2:30, a delicious plate of steaming rice, dal, vegetable, and fry with Doi Katla, chatni, and papad will be served to you on the launch deck itself.

The last day of our Sundarban tour for 2 nights 3 days comes to an end.

• Hunting the animals, fishing, or causing harm to the flora is punishable, and you must not pollute the natural beauty of the place by throwing anything from the launch.
• You can enter the Sunderbans NationPark only with a valid permit, and you should have respect for the habitat.
• Please carry warm clothes for winter and light clothes for the summer. Also, try to wear greenish outfits that help you camouflage in the natural environment.

How many tigers are there in Sundarban?

In the 2014 national census, 76 tigers were traced in the zone. In 2018, the number of big cats was 88. The 2020-2021 Census conducted by the state forest department had found 96 tigers in the delta.

A unique eco-tourism destination, the Sundarbans, is the largest Mangrove Forest on earth and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stretches about 80km into the Bangladeshi and Indian mainland from the coast of the Bay of Bengal. 60% of this mist-shrouded forest is located in Bangladesh. Though this 10,500km 2 forest area is surrounded by two of the most densely populated country on three sides, it remains remote, inhospitable, and largely uninhabited by people. Intersected by a complex network of rivers and creeks, mudflats, and tiny islands, this amazing forest is comprised of two elementary Eco regions: The Mangrove Forest and the Freshwater Swamp Forest. The Mangrove Forest and the Freshwater Swamp Forest. The word Sundarbans means a beautiful forest. However, the name is derived from the “Sundari” trees which are seen here plentifully. This forest is mainly famous for the Royal Bengal Tiger but you’ll also see here the spotted deer, saltwater crocodiles, and different types of birds. This huge forest provides a habitat for 42 species of mammal, 290 species of bird, 120 species of fish, 50 species of reptiles, and 8 species of amphibians.

Located on the southeast corner of the Sundarbans, this place is one of the most tourists visited place. Tourists come here to see tigers, spotted deer and different types of birds. You can easily see the wildlife of Sundarbans from the 40 feet high wooden watchtower.

Located 14km to the east of Katka, Kochikhali features dense forests facing the Bay of Bengal. Boating along the Kochikhali Khal will provide you the glimpse of basking crocodiles, deer, wild boar, lizards and a lot of birds. Even, sometimes you can see the famous Royal Bengal Tiger.

Hiron Point

Headquarter of the South Wildlife Sanctuary, Hiron Point, is one of the most visited places in Sundarbans. Tourists come to this graceful spot to see tigers and other rare and spectacular wildlife such as monkey, crocodiles, otter, snakes etc. Also known as Nilkamal, this place is also famous for different types of birds.

Jamtola Beach

Though this beach is not a famous one, this lonesome beach is a nice and clean beach in Bangladesh. For its remote location, deep in the Sundarbans beside the Bay of Bengal not many people come here. Sundarban Tour Plan / Itinerary

Day 1:   Transfer from Kolkata - Sundarban ( Sonakhali / Gothkhali )

8-30 AM: Pick up from Kolkata.

11 AM: Arrival at Sonakhali / Gothkhali (Here the road journey ends and the thrilling boat cruise begins).

11.30 A.M: Departure by our mechanized boat for Pakhirala. Tea/Coffee with biscuits will be served on the boat. There will also be a Briefing and Interpretation about the Sunderbans during the boat journey.

1.30 P.M: Lunch.

3.30 P.M: Departure by boat for Pakhir Jungle famous for different types of birds like Curlew, Wimbrell, Red sank, Pond heron, Asian Pied Starling, Large Egrets, Lesser Adjutant Storks, Sandpipers, Cormorants etc. and fabulous Sun SetPoint.

6.00 P.M: Arrival at our Resort, Sunderban which is located right opposite to the Sunderban Tiger Reserve Forest separated by River Gomdi.

About Sundarbans National Park

The Sundarbans is the largest single block of tidal mangrove forest in the world. The Sundarbans is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering parts of Bangladesh and the Indian State of West Bengal. These mangroves have a substantial tiger population in a distinct ecological setting. These forests have salt water crocodiles, estuarine and marine turtles and a number of bird species. Besides tiger, the reserve has fishing cat, spotted deer, and rhesus monkey, wild pigs and myriad birds.

The Sundarbans are isolated with no forest connection to other tiger-occupied forests on main land. Hence, there is heavy biotic pressure for forest resources. On average 500 quintals of honey and 30 quintals of wax are collected each year by local people under licence from Forest Department. The habitat is traversed by many narrow tidal channels forming small to large islands. Tigers frequently cross these islands in search of prey and man-tiger interactions are common.

1. How to Reach Sundarbans National Park?

The Sundarbans is the largest single block of tidal mangrove forest in the world and is a very popular wildlife tourist destinations in India. The Sundarbans are well connected from Kolkata by rail and road.

By Air : The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Airport (Kolkata – CCU). It is only 75 kms away from Sonakhali Jetty Ghat. The travel time is approximately 2 hrs. 45 mins.

By Rail : The nearest railway station is Canning which is only 17 kms. away from Sonakhali Jetty Ghat. The travel time is only 35 mins. You can reach Canning by train from Sealdah Railway Station (Kolkata) or by road. The most convenient way is to travel by local train from Sealdah to Canning which takes roughly 1 hr. 10 mins.

By Road : We usually pick up our guests from P C Chandra Garden (Gate No. 1) which is just opposite to Science City (Kolkata). The drive from Science City to Sonakhali Jetty Ghat is 2 hrs. 30 mins. and is barely 70 kms. away.

2. When is the best time to Visit Sundarbans?

Ideally November to March is a very good time to visit the Sundarbans. This is because the temperatures are pleasant and one can enjoy the views of many birds and animals. You may find a salt water crocodile sunning itself on the river banks in the winter months. Crocodiles are cold blooded animals and need the energy of the sun to increase their body temperature.  Birds are also very common during these months.

During the summer months, one can spot deer, monkeys, crocodiles, birds and specially tigers. During summer months the movement of the big cats like tigers increase and they frequent the banks of the canal for water and prey. During the rainy season visit to Sunderbans are best avoided totally. Boat or Cruise Packages are also to be avoided due to storms/heavy rain.

By Train- From Kolkata you can go to Sunderbans by a train till Canning (1 Hours) from Sealdah Station In Kolkata, and then take road transport till Godhkhali (1 Hours). From Godkhali you need to cross ferry and reach Gosaba Town (30 Minutes). From there you need to take a auto van or mechanized rickshaw van for about 45 minutes to reach Pakhirala Village where accommodation is available in various resorts & Lodges. Alternately from Canning you can take Bus, Auto or shared Jeep transportation to Jharkhali where you will find accommodation. If you are travelling by train remember these trains are public transports and does not have any reservation systems or any 1st class or 2nd class compartments. These are suburban daily commute trains for lakhs of people who come and return to the City regularly for employments & other requirements. Sometimes they tend to get overcrowded and becomes very unpleasant for tourists. By Road- There are two popular roads connecting to Sundarban. One via Baruipur Canning which is about 100 kms from Kolkata and takes about 4 hours drive due to heavy traffic. The other road is via Basanti Highway which is longer distance but the traffic is low hence the journey time is little less. So if you want to approach Sundarbans Via Godkhali you will be dropped there and take the same ferry & land route to Pakhirala. However if you want to go to Jharkhali you can directly reach there by driving your car.

To approach Sundarban National Park, you have to start from kolkata and travel by road for about 100 kms where the main land ends. After there it takes around 1.5 hours by boat/or 15 minutes by local transportation from where the buffer area of the  jungle and Sundarban Tour starts.
