One of the most marvellous characteristics of the Sunshine Coast is the contrast between its golden beaches and crisp hinterland. It’s these complimentary landscapes that make the Sunshine Coast such a desirable destination to stay and play in Queensland.

Sunshine coast hinterland

As a former Brisbanite, I’ve taken many day trips to small sections of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland over the years. Then, while recently based in Maroochydore and Buderim, I planned the ultimate one day on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

This Sunshine Coast Hinterland itinerary can be completed in a loop, starting from the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane. From Maroochydore driving west, it took us 30 minutes to get to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

For those visitors from Brisbane, keep in mind that it’s around one hour of driving to reach the southern point of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland region and around two hours to the northern point (not including the driving time between attractions). If that sounds like too much driving for one day, see our recommendations for Sunshine Coast Hinterland accommodation at the bottom of the article.

See our guide on the best things to do in Noosa for first-time visitors.

The Jinibara People are the Traditional Owners and determined Native Titleholders of the western section of the Sunshine Coast region, including parts of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

There’s no wrong season to visit the Sunshine Coast with hot summers averaging a high of 29C and mild winters averaging a low of 9C. Even in the middle of winter, you’ll find sunny and pleasant days as high as 22C. If you decide to visit in the warmer months, you’ll have the bonus of wet weather filling up the waterfalls and swimming holes in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

To avoid the crowds, book your trip outside of the Queensland school holidays .

One-Day Itinerary for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Finally, we started at the northern point of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, however, you could also choose to do this itinerary in reverse if you prefer to start south.

Start your Sunshine Coast Hinterland day trip with Australia’s biggest arts and crafts market. The Eumundi Markets are a splash of colour and activity within a small country town.

Eumundi Markets

Local tip: After wandering around the Eumundi Market, wet your whistle at the Eumundi Brewery, across the road within the Imperial Hotel . People flock from all over to mingle at this market, snacking on fresh street food and shopping for handmade goods.

Location: 80 Memorial Dr, Eumundi QLD 4562 Best Time to Visit: Open Wednesdays 8 am – 2 pm and Saturdays 7 am – 2 pm How much: The market is free to enter. Parking is $7

From Eumundi heading south into the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, there are a few points of interest you may wish to visit. The first is The Ginger Factory in Yandina with tasting tours and rides for kids.

Next, is the iconic Big Pineapple in Nambour. Its park and its attractions are sadly closed, however, you can still pull over to look at the oversized pineapple.

Big Pineapple Queensland

Third, is Dulong Lookout, reached after a short uphill drive from Nambour. This spectacular photo spot overlooks the Sunshine Coast towards Maroochydore.

Location: Dulong Lookout, Burnside QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: Anytime from sunrise to sunset.

If you drive from Eumundi Markets stopping at Dulong Lookout, it’s approximately 35 minutes to Maple Falls National Park . The 58-kilometre Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk runs through Maple Falls National Park, providing shorter walking tracks for day visitors.

  • Maple Falls Lookout: A 25-meter path connects the car park with a breathtaking view of the Obi Obi Valley. Both the lookout and picnic areas are wheelchairs accessible.
  • Woompoo Circuit: Stretch your legs on this 1.3-kilometre return walk through the dense rainforest. For the best views of Maple Falls, check out the Peregrine Lookout.

Location: Maple Falls Viewing Point, Mapleton QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: Anytime from sunrise to sunset.

At the next set of waterfalls in Kondalilla National Park, you’ll have the opportunity to cool off. It’s a quick 15-minute drive from Mapleton Falls National Park. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk also connects the Mapleton Falls Lookout with the Kondalilla picnic area where you’ll be starting your visit.

Mountain brook in Kondalilla National Park

Here there are four short walks, with the most popular being the 4.7-kilometre Kondalilla Falls Circuit. This trail requires a reasonable level of fitness with 300 steps. However, you’ll be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the rock pools.

Location: Kondalilla Falls Rd, Flaxton QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: Plan ahead to ensure you have enough time to return during daylight hours. The best time to see the falls is during the wetter months (December to June).

You’ll likely feel famished after your hike and swim at Kondalilla National Park. We recommend heading five minutes down the road to Montville for lunch. This picturesque small town has a charming main street dotted with cafes, art, and antique stores. After taking a stroll around town, we planted ourselves in the Russell Family Park for a picnic.

Main street of Montville

For local produce and eats, plan to arrive when the Montville Markets are on. The various stalls sell fresh fruit, locally grown vegetables, baked treats, and fair trade coffee.

Location: Village Hall on Memorial Close, off, Main St, Montville QLD 4560 Best Time to Visit: The Montville Markets run from 7.30 am to 12 pm on the second Saturday morning of each month.

Maleny is another 16-minute drive from its sister town of Montville. There’s an abundance of activities in Maleny, depending on your taste and interests. We dropped in at the Brouhaha Brewery, which now has a second Sunshine Coast location in Baringa. This brewpub sources local, seasonal fruits and sends discarded grain to feed the cows at Maleny Wagyu farms. Brouhaha then buys back those cows to use nose-to-tail in the restaurant.

Brouhaha Brewery

Other Maleny attractions include:

  • Maleny Botanic Gardens : Privately owned garden and wildlife park open 7 days a week
  • Maleny Cheese : Sample award-winning cheese and yogurt in their cafe next to a working cheese factory
  • Maleny Dairies : Visit Queensland’s first carbon-neutral dairy business with tours and taste testing
  • Platypus Viewing Platform: This platypus viewing spot is on Porters Lane in North Maleny. Early morning or late afternoon are usually the best times to spot a platypus.

Location: Brouhaha Maleny is at Shop 5 on 39 Coral St, Maleny QLD 4552 Best Time to Visit: Open Friday to Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm.

The namesake of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was a devoted environmentalist whose land was used to create a 100-acre reserve. The project began in 1959 by the Rotary Club of Maleny in collaboration with Mary’s daughter and the Landsborough Shire Council.

Now the Marcy Cairncross Scenic Reserve is home to over 200 species of reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals such as the pademelon. For a gold coin donation, you’ll be able to explore the reserve and its facilities such as the Rainforest Discovery Centre and Glass House Mountains viewing platform. Eating options are available with the Mountain View Cafe or picnic tables and BBQs in the public picnic area.

Location: 148 Mountain View Rd, Maleny QLD 4552 Best Time to Visit: Open daily from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm

Gardner Falls was the last stop on our one-day itinerary for the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. These falls in Maleny, close to the other attractions and a popular swimming hole for locals.

Gardners Falls in Maleny, Sunshine Coast

We found going in the late afternoon to be a perfect time, as many people were leaving. The waterfalls aren’t are impressive as at Mapleton Falls and Kondalilla National Park, however, this is a fun place to take a dip and relax.

Location: Obi Ln S, Maleny QLD 4552 Best Time to Visit: Anytime from sunrise to sunset.

We planned our trip to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in a day, but you could easily spread out these activities over a weekend or longer. To help you plan your trip and book accommodation, we’ve listed some of the best places to stay in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland:

Maleny Sunshine Coast

  • Glass House Mountains Ecolodge (from $129 per night): Affordable and sustainable accommodation near the majestic Glass House Mountains National Park. There are options for all group sizes, whether travelling solo, with friends or family. You could even sleep in a 19th-century church or restored train carriage.
  • The Guesthouse Maleny (from $144 per night): A quaint and comfortable guesthouse walking distance to Maleny’s main street and attractions such as the Maleny Botanic Gardens.
  • Hunchy Hideaway (from $304 per night): Treat yourself to a gorgeous villa or cottage tucked away in Montville. Each accommodation option is self-contained with a spa bath and log fire.

We have a feeling you’ll be leaving the Sunshine Coast Hinterland completely rejuvenated, yet yearning for the next visit.

Girl Eat World

A girl's adventure in food and travel around the world, sunshine coast hinterland: driving through the scenic coast of australia.

Our route up north to Noosa took us for a drive through Sunshine Coast Hinterland, a beautiful area just north of Brisbane that includes driving through the mountains and beach side. It’s got a bit of everything – if you like beaches, you would be spoiled for choices of routes along the coast. If you are more of a mountain person, heading in is only an hour drive away.

I went on a 10-day road trip to Queensland with Cheaptickets.sg and Queensland Tourism Board. This post details my experience of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland portion of the trip, where we drove from Brisbane to Noosa. If you are interested in my overall itinerary, please read my Queensland Road Trip post first !

Things to do in Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Hinterland (noun): The remote or less developed parts of a country; back country. The land lying behind a coastal region.

While you are driving through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, here are some spots you can stop and check out

1. Maleny, a beautiful town in the mountain

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

Our itinerary took us up to Maleny, a little town about 1.5 hours drive from Brisbane that is known for its wine and fresh dairies. At first it can seem a bit out of place on the map – I myself wondered why the tourism board suggested we go up here, but once we went… I understood why. This town is so beautiful! I can’t believe it’s only a short drive away from Brisbane.

You can easily spend half a day in this beautiful town. Here are some things you can do in Maleny:

Maleny Mountain Wines

Their choice of food is quite slim and they may run out of ingredients if you arrive later in the afternoon, but their choice of beverages are top notch. I recommend trying their Maleny Rose, which are made from locally grown grapes. But if wine isn’t your favorite, you can also try their home-brewed ales!

Maleny Dairy Farm

They have farm tours running a few times a day. Even if you missed the tour, I still highly recommend you visit this farm just because it’s so beautiful. We did not make it on time for the last tour but we stayed anyway and got ourselves a cup of coffee, some milk from the farm as well as some ice creams. Then we sat on the picnic bench at the farm for awhile and enjoyed the beautiful tranquil scenery.

Gardner’s Fall

You can also go for a short and easy walk at Gardner’s Fall. When I say a short walk, it’s very short – literally 10-15 minutes walk and the path is nicely paved.

Gerrard Lookout

As you make your way out of Maleny, be sure to take the scenic drive through the Maleny-Montville Road and stop by Gerrard Lookout. This lookout is small but you get an amazing, unobstructed view of the Hinterlands from up here.

2. Eumundi Market

Eumundi Market is a huge market that happens every Wednesday and Saturday. You can find anything from coffee, heritage food to clothing and arts & crafts here. Set aside a few hours walking around here.

3. Glass House Mountains

Glass House Mountains is a series of hills just a short drive off Brisbane. I recommend staying at a lodge near the mountain (I’ll elaborate more where we stayed), and check out Glass House Mountains Lookout for sunrise, sunset or even just stargazing at night.

We tried to do one of the easier hikes for sunrise at Mount Ngungun, which is only about 45 minutes each way to the peak. We left our lodge at 5 AM and started ascending, but the weather was not on our side and it ended up raining when we were still half way up. We reached the peak anyway but we could not see anything due to the fog 🙁 On a clear day, it would have been beautiful.

4. David Low Way, a Scenic Coastal Drive

This is for the beach lovers – David Low Way is a totally scenic 36km coastal drive from Maroochydore up to Noosa Head. It’s not the fastest route to go up north but it sure is beautiful. Along the way you’ll find multiple lookout points you can stop by, such as Coolum Beach Park and Point Perry . These two are great for surfer watching and just generally chilling by the beach.

5. Have a romantic getaway at Amytis Gardens Retreat & Spa

While going up to Noosa, we stayed at Amytis Gardens Retreat & Spa . It’s located in Kiels Mountain, about 30 minutes drive from Maleny and a very quiet secluded area among the farms. This place was so so SO beautiful! We had our own private chalet with queen bed, living room, and a huge balcony. There is also a parking space for each chalet, so you can just park your car a few meters away from the door step.

Our Private Chalet!

Some of the chalet comes with a spa bath that sits below a huge window facing out to the woods. We definitely took advantage of the bath during our stay.

Amytis Gardens is the most memorable accommodation on this trip, and probably in my entire travel history so far. It was just too nice! I will not hesitate to recommend this place for couples looking to get away from the busy city life.

Book Amytis Gardens here .

Other things to do (that I didn’t have time for)

Australia is a huge place – even ten days was not enough for me to properly explore the area so there are still things that I did not get to do. If you have the time, you can check them out. I would love hearing your experiences on these!

  • Montville – I was so close! This place is pretty much right next to Maleny, but since we wanted to reach our accommodation before sunset, we didn’t get to stop by here. They have some nature walk and waterfalls you can visit.
  • Australia Zoo – This zoo was opened by Steve Irwin’s parents, where he had been helping out since he was young. Among other animals, you can see a wide variety of crocodiles (a must see in Australia) and reptiles. Buy your Australia Zoo Ticket online.
  • More hikes on Glass House Mountains – I only got to do one at it was not a great experience due to weather, but I would love to do more of this!

Where to stay in Sunshine Coast Hinterland

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

  • Amytis Gardens Retreat & Spa at Kiels Mountain – I’ve already written an entire section about this place, so I don’t think I need to repeat it again! Perfect for a romantic getaway from the city.
  • Glass House Mountains Eco Lodge – We stayed here on our way back down to Brisbane. This lodge is perfect if you are planning on doing an easy trek around Glass House Mountains, which I highly recommend. We actually stayed here on the unpaid portion of the trip (since we decided to extend the trip) and found it to be an excellent value-for-money. The accommodation is very basic but it’s clean and it’s got that rustic mountain feel.

Loved reading this! I am a Sunny Coast local, and I love the beaches. But I also love to drive up to the Hinterland for a change of scene every now and then. My favourite place to go is Lake Baroon. It’s such a beautiful spot and often I have it pretty much to myself which only adds to its charm.

As appealing as the Sunshine Coast’s beaches are, it’s well worth tearing yourself away for a day (or preferably longer) to explore the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

In the green interior, you can walk through lush rainforest and swim in waterfalls, drive past rolling hills with views down to the ocean, shop in cute villages for locally made products, and enjoy delicious food and drink.

The Hinterland is perfect for a romantic getaway (it’s popular for weddings) as there are many unique places to stay including cosy cottages (and treehouses!) with spa baths and fireplaces. But there’s plenty to do for families and friend groups too.

1) Stay in a Treehouse at Secrets on the Lake

Walkway leading up to Secrets on the Lake treehouses, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

The luxury treehouses at Secrets on the Lake are one of the best places we’ve ever stayed.

We loved it so much that we booked our second stay as soon as got back from our first trip!

The treehouses are hidden in the rainforest overlooking Lake Baroon . It feels far away from it all, but it’s less than a 10-minute drive to Montville.

The cabins are elevated on stilts amongst the trees and are reached by wooden walkways, which adds to the magical feel of this unique place.

Most of the rooms are designed for couples with spa baths next to the windows, cosy fireplaces, and large terraces with double swing chairs.

They all make the most of the incredible forest and lake views.

The attention to detail is amazing and you can see the love the owners George and Aldy have poured into the place in the last 25 years.

From the beautiful stained glass windows and handcrafted wood carvings in each cabin to the cosy bathrobes, chocolates by the bed, and warm croissants left outside your door each morning.

Treehouses have BBQs and small (but well-equipped) kitchens so you can self-cater or order a meal from the cafe to heat up in the evening. They arranged a delicious cheese plate for us one night.

Secrets on the Lake is a truly special place and perfect for an ultra-relaxing, romantic getaway in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Check availability for Secrets on the Lake here . It’s very popular so book as far in advance as possible.

2) Follow the Blackall Range Tourist Drive

Map of the Blackall Range Tourist Drive 23 in Sunshine Coast Hinterland

The 55km Blackall Range Tourist Drive (Route 23) runs from Landsborough to Nambour , but the best section connects Maleny to Montville and Mapleton, high up on the escarpment with stunning views of rolling hills and the distant ocean.

If you are short of time, this is the best route to follow to see the highlights of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

The drive takes an hour non-stop, but there’s plenty to do along the way (as you’ll discover below).

You can also stop at viewpoints like Gerrard’s Lookout for sweeping views of the countryside and coast.

For a full day out, add on the Glass House Mountains —the main lookout is a 35-minute drive south of Maleny.

3) Eat and Shop in Maleny

Dining room of Monica’s Cafe, Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Maleny is one of the best places to visit in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

The small town is surrounded by beautiful countryside and pockets of ancient rainforest high in the Blackall Range, 425 metres above sea level.

It’s the ideal place to stop for lunch or to stock up on supplies for a self-catering stay in the area.

The town has an alternative vibe—we were surprised that a rural village had so many veggie options, but the community is artistic and eco-conscious.

We had a delicious lunch at Monica’s Cafe , a plant and art-filled space on two levels (grab a couch upstairs). The food, coffee, and hot chocolate were all delicious, and there was even a separate vegan menu.

My vegetable halloumi burger was messy but so good packed with grilled vegetables, halloumi, pesto and mayo with nice chunky chips.

We were also tempted by Maleny Lane , an alleyway full of gourmet world food (Thai, Korean, Indian and more), but it’s not open every day. There’s live music on Friday nights.

The takeaway pies at Maleny Pie Guy looked great too (with vegan options) and Maple & Sage has vegan cupcakes and other treats.

For self-catering and picnic ingredients, head to Maleny Food Co for cheese (see below), Maple Street Food Co-op for whole foods and bulk buy, and the Seasons IGA for anything else.

And don’t miss the chocolate at Maleny Chocolate Co !

Other shops in town sell clothes, art, antiques, books, and gifts. All these places are easily accessible on Maple Street .

There’s lots to do near Maleny. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is just outside town and we highly recommend it (see below).

Gardners Falls is also nearby and is one of the most accessible spots for swimming in the Hinterland—the natural pool is only 300 metres from the car park.

Brouhaha Brewery is a popular spot for craft beer fans.

4) Buy Fresh Pasta at Santini il Pastaio

Santini il Pastaio is a fresh pasta shop in Maleny that’s so good it deserves its own entry. We’ve spent a lot of time in Italy and this is the real deal!

If you are self-catering during your stay in the Hinterland, definitely stop here to pick up an easy dinner.

We bought melt-in-your-mouth gnocchi and a simple but perfect Napoletana sauce, and it only took a few minutes to heat up. We couldn’t stop raving about how good it was.

Even if you aren’t self-catering, you can choose your pasta and sauce and have it cooked for you in the shop to take away.

There’s a wide range of pasta and sauces including handmade ravioli and specials like vegetarian lasagne. They also have Italian desserts.

5) Spot Wildlife at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Tall trees in Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a must do in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, especially for animal lovers.

This remnant of the subtropical rainforest that once covered the Blackall Range is home to many birds, animals, and some truly impressive trees.

The easy 1.7km rainforest loop takes you around the whole reserve with plenty to see along the way. It took us 45 minutes with lots of stops.

The highlight was the five adorable pademelons (small kangaroos) that we saw including a mother and joey very close to the boardwalk.

Pademelon in Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

You can learn more about the flora and fauna in the Rainforest Discovery Centre . There’s also a cafe that looked appealing.

Head up to the viewing deck above the cafe for a wonderful view of the Glass House Mountains.

Mary Cairncross Cafe, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queens;and, Australia

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a 10-minute drive outside Maleny. Entrance is by gold coin donation (contactless is available if you don’t have cash).

6) Hike the Kondalilla Falls Circuit

Kondalilla Falls, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

One of the best Sunshine Coast Hinterland hikes is the Kondalilla Falls Circuit in Kondalilla National Park , just a five-minute drive from Montville.

This beautiful trail includes stunning rainforest, epic valley views, a 90-metre-tall waterfall, and rock pools for swimming.

The 4.8km loop took us 1 hour 20 minutes (two hours including a swimming break) with an elevation gain of 206 metres.

While there are a lot of steps, it wasn’t too difficult. It’s easier if you go anticlockwise (which is the way the signs will take you). This also leaves the rock pools to the end.

After parking at Kondalilla Falls Car Park, head down the steps to a picnic area (there are toilets and information signs here) and start on the Picnic Creek Circuit .

Go right at the junction and after about 20 minutes you’ll reach a lookout (slightly off-trail) with expansive views of the valley.

Kondalilla Falls Circuit, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Then join the Kondalilla Falls Circuit (head right away from the rock pools) which will take you down steep steps through the forest far down into the valley.

There’s a lookout to see Kondalilla Falls on the way down—a tall but narrow trickle of water for us in winter.

At the bottom, you can take a detour (about 10 minutes return) to the bottom of the falls. You have to scramble over some rocks to get to the small pool (not very appealing for swimming on our visit—save that for later).

Now you have to make your way back up the other side of the valley, but the switchbacks make it easier than the stairs on the other side.

Your reward at the top is the rock pools at the very top of the waterfall, which are perfect for a swim. In winter, I had it to myself but it was chilly. Watch out for the eels!

Rock pools at Kondalilla Falls, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

From the rock pools, it took us 20 minutes to return to the car park, taking the other side of the Picnic Creek Loop.

While you could head straight to the rock pools if you have limited time or energy, I really loved the whole hike.

Kondalilla Falls is justifiably popular so it’s best visited on a weekday.

If you need lunch after your hike, the Kondalilla Restaurant in Kondalilla Eco Resort is next to the park.

There’s a lovely bush view from the terrace and the vegetarian and seafood menu is great if are looking for something lighter. Our Nourish bowl and Thai curry were both veggie-packed and delicious.

7) Visit Lake Baroon

Lake Baroon on a sunny day and reflections in the water, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Lake Baroon is a hidden gem in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

The lake was created by Baroon Pocket Dam and is a peaceful spot for picnics, kayaking, or paddleboarding.

There are no water sports rentals, but if you stay at Secrets by the Lake (as we did), canoes are free for guests.

Even if you don’t stay at Secrets, I recommend visiting their cafe for coffee, lunch, or afternoon tea as the terrace has a fantastic view of the lake.

Secrets On the Lake cafe by Lake Baroon, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

The northern end of the lake is also the start of the 58km Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk . You can do a shorter hike in Kondalilla National Park here through some lovely forest.

The 5.5km return hike to Narrows Lookout and Baroon Lookout takes you to a view of the lake.

You can also walk the 10km to Kondalilla Falls from here. If you are staying at Secrets, they can drop you off with a packed lunch so you can do a one-way hike back.

Unfortunately, you can’t swim in most of Lake Baroon as it provides drinking water to the area. There is one swimming area on the southern side (look for “Baroon Pocket Dam (North Maleny side)” on Google Maps).

8) Sample Local Cheeses

This rural area is heaven for cheese lovers with several local dairies.

We shopped for a cheese plate at Maleny Food Co , which has a walk-in Fromagerie with more than 250 Australian and international cheeses to choose from.

They have plenty of chutneys and pastes to go with the cheese. You can also eat in their cafe or they can arrange cheese and picnic boxes with 48 hours notice.

Kenilworth Dairy is known for its excellent cheese and you can visit their shop and cafe in Kenilworth.

Maleny Cheese is another popular option for cheese plates in their cafe that overlooks the factory floor.

Why not let someone else do the planning and try this Private Small Group Sunshine Coast Hinterland Cheese & Wine Tour which includes pick up and a two course lunch.

9) Indulge at the Chocolate Shops

Every Sunny Coast Hinterland town seems to have a chocolate shop and we’re not complaining.

Maleny Chocolate Co is down the stairs below Monica’s Cafe and has a wide range of treats (with free samples). We especially loved the peppermint bark and honeycomb bark (made using honey from their farm).

Chocolate Country Montville is another great spot. Their truffles are lovely and you can enjoy a hot chocolate in the cafe.

If you prefer fudge, Fudgyboombahs in Montville is popular.

10) Shop in Montville

Shop front in Montville, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Montville is a pretty mountain town 15 minutes from Maleny on Route 23. Spending an hour or so browsing the shops here is one of the best things to do in Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

While there is parking on Main St , it’s easier to go to the large free car park behind the Clock Shop . There’s a public toilet here and everything is an easy walk down Main Street.

Some Montville highlights include:

  • Clock Shop – A quirky store selling cuckoo and grandfather clocks plus Christmas decorations and gifts.
  • Tamborine Tea – A wonderful range of loose-leaf teas including black, green, and herbal. They have testers so you can smell them all.
  • Montville Art Gallery – Paintings by local artists.
  • Chocolate Country Montville – Delicious chocolates.

There are many other gift shops and galleries including woodworking and ceramics.

We had lunch at Edamame , a Japanese cafe on an upper floor overlooking Main Street. The small menu includes donburi (rice bowls), ramen, curry, and salads with a few vegan and gluten-free options.

11) Stop at Mapleton Falls Lookout

Erin and Simon at the Mapleton Falls Lookout, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Mapleton Falls Lookout is a wheelchair-accessible viewpoint next to the car park in Mapleton Falls National Park .

At the lookout, you peer down from the top of the 120-metre waterfall, which was a trickle in winter (summer is the rainy season), but it’s still worth stopping for the expansive views of Obi Obi Valley and the rainforest canopy.

In August and September, look out for peregrine falcons, which roost on the cliff edges here.

The Great Walk passes through here, but if you just want to stretch your legs, the Wompoo Circuit is a lovely walk through rainforest and eucalypt forest.

Wompoo Circuit in Mapleton Falls National Park, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Including the Peregrine Lookout side trip, it was 1.7km for us and took 25 minutes with 65 metres of elevation gain. It was fairly easy with a few gentle ascents, and it’s quieter than Kondalilla National Park.

12) Visit Kenilworth Bakery and Dairy

Simon enjoying his Kenilworth Bakery donuts with a colourful mural behind him, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

If you have time after visiting Maleny, Montville, and Mapleton, it’s worth driving to Kenilworth , another little country town.

It was a beautiful drive down from Mapleton on Obi Obi Rd , although we hadn’t expected it to be unsealed and so steep. No caravans are allowed. The road is sealed on the way back up.

Kenilworth is surrounded by farmland with cows grazing and feels far away from it all.

Kenilworth Bakery is renowned in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland for its pies and donuts, which you can buy from side-by-side shops on Elizabeth Street . I recommend trying both.

We were pleased that they had good vegan options in both. We loved the roast vegetable and korma pastry roll and the southwest tofu pie (like a chile with spicy beans, vegetables, and tofu).

There’s a huge range of decadent donuts. We chose the relatively simple chocolate glaze and a vegan jam donut. Both were delicious, but we actually preferred the texture of the vegan one.

You can also get a coffee donut (a hollowed-out donut filled with coffee!) and a very intense-looking 1kg donut (pre-order needed).

Eat your treats at the picnic tables behind the shops and enjoy the murals by Daus Von Roe featuring music stars.

A few minutes walk from the bakery is Kenilworth Dairy . There’s an outdoor cafe and store where you can buy their large range of cheeses and other foodie products.

I’d heard their yoghurts and chocolate mousse were excellent, but unfortunately, they contain gelatine so are not vegetarian-friendly.

From Kenilworth, you could loop back to Maleny on Route 22 or head to the coast via Eumundi .

13) Admire the Huge Trees on the Fig Tree Walk

Giant fig tree, Kenilworth, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

One of the easiest attractions to add to your Kenilworth visit is the Fig Tree Walk , a seven-minute drive out of town.

From the parking area, cross the bridge to get to the wheelchair-accessible paved and boardwalk loop.

The 1.1km flat trail took us 15 minutes and passed two immense 150-year-old Moreton Bay fig trees.

14) See the View at Glass House Mountains Lookout

View from Glass House Mountains Lookout, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

The Glass House Mountains are at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

The countryside is flatter than the Blackall Range, but the landscape is punctuated by unique plugs, which were formed by volcanic activity over 25 million years ago.

The easiest place to see the array of craggy peaks is the Glass House Mountains Lookout, which you can drive right up to.

It’s a great overview of the area with signs to identify each mountain and information on how they were formed.

Facilities here include toilets, picnic tables, and BBQs. There’s also a 800-metre bush walk but it doesn’t have views, so you could skip it if you are doing other walks in the area.

Just down the road is the Lookout Cafe , which has fantastic views of Mt Coonowrin from the terrace.

We had coffee here while staying at Glass on Glasshouse on-site, but the menu looked appealing.

15) Hike Mt Ngungun for an Even Better View

Simon on top of Mt Ngungun overlooking the Glasshouse Mountains, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

For an even better view of the Glass House Mountains, it’s worth heading up Mt Ngungun .

While the rocky steps up are quite steep, it’s not a difficult walk. The return trip was 2.5km and took us 45 minutes (plus a break at the top) with a 190-metre elevation gain.

Wear shoes with traction as the rocks at the summit are quite slippery.

We also walked the 4.4km / 1 hour Mount Tibrogargan Circuit . It’s easier than Mt Ngungun, but it’s through the bush around the base of the mountain, so you only get occasional views of the mountains.

16) Stay in a Stunning Cottage at Glass on Glasshouse

Stylish interior of a Glass on Glasshouse cottage, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Our ideal Sunshine Coast Hinterland visit would include stays at both Secrets on the Lake in Montville and Glass on Glasshouse .

Glass on Glasshouse is an adults-only retreat with three private cottages with floor-to-ceiling windows to make the most of the stunning views of Mt Coonowrin.

The cottages are ultra-modern and stylish with a huge spa bath that fills from the ceiling, a patio with BBQ, and a fridge stocked with tasty breakfast ingredients.

You won’t want to leave, so bring food to self-cater or order a meal in advance from the cafe.

There’s a shared pool, which we had to ourselves and was perfect to cool off on a hot afternoon.

Look out for kangaroos on the lawns!

We absolutely loved our stay here and it’s perfect for a tranquil, romantic weekend away in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Check availability for Glass on Glasshouse here . Make sure to book well ahead.

17) Enjoy a Leisurely Lunch at Spirit House

Spirit House restaurant reflected in a picturesque pond and lush greenery, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Spirit House is one of the most beloved destination restaurants on the Sunshine Coast and was our favourite meal in the area.

It’s located in the small town of Yandina , between the coast and the Blackall Ranges. It’s close to the Ginger Factory and Eumundi Market , so consider combining all three (easily done as a day trip from Noosa too).

The setting is beautiful with colourful buildings amongst lush Asian gardens and swaying bamboo. The main dining room is open-air and surrounds a lovely pond.

Spirit House is ideal for a special occasion. The minimum cost is $100 per person for three courses or choose the premium banquet at $120 for four courses served sharing style. Allow at least two hours for a leisurely meal.

The food is Thai inspired and the flavours felt authentic to us, albeit with a new interpretation.

Our vegetarian premium banquet included Miang Kham (peanuts and ginger wrapped in a betel leaf—a little flavour implosion), tom yum soup, steamed pumpkin cake, and our favourite, the sweet and spicy Fried Plantain and Tuturuga Spice Paste.

Sweet and Spicy Fried Plantain and Tuturuga Spice Paste, Spirit House, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Our mains were an excellent Yellow Curry with beetroot cooked in multiple ways and a Mushroom Pad See Ew.

Dessert varies each day and was a highlight for us. The Mango Sticky Rice “Eton Mess” combined mango sorbet, meringue, and crystallised pandan for a light, fruity, crunchy end to a wonderful meal.

The food, service, and setting are all exceptional at Spirit House and we highly recommend it.

Advance bookings are essential—likely at least a few weeks for lunch and longer for dinner.

Are you visiting Noosa too? Check out our guide to the best restaurants in Noosa from casual eats to beachfront dining and the best things to do in Noosa.

18) Experience the Ginger Factory

Large Gingerbread man and colourful umbrellas greeting Erin to the Ginger Factory, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

Also in Yandina is the Ginger Factory . I initially dismissed it as a tourist trap, but we ended up enjoying our time there.

It’s one of the top Sunshine Coast Hinterland attractions for families, but if you like ginger, it’s worth visiting even without kids.

Buderim ginger is some of the best in the world. While they no longer grow ginger here, it’s processed on-site with ginger grown by local farmers.

At Ginger Factory you can learn the history of ginger production in the area, see how it’s grown, and shop for a wide range of ginger products (the ginger beer with spiced rum is our favourite).

The large complex is more of a ginger theme park. You can take a steam train around the grounds, look for gingerbread men on the indoor boat ride (think Disney’s It’s a Small World ), and stroll through a rainforest walk under vibrant umbrellas.

The grounds and play areas are free, but the train, boat ride, and various tours cost extra.

We enjoyed the seasonal Harvest Tour, where we learnt how ginger is grown and harvested and tried a few of their products.

The train and boat ride were cute but skippable for adults without kids.

Families could easily spend half a day here doing all the activities.

19) Buy Local Crafts at Eumundi Market

Stall at Eumundi Market, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland, Australia

The famous Eumundi Market is one of the top Sunshine Coast Hinterland activities.

The huge market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning and features an array of stalls selling clothes, jewellery, art, gifts, games, home decor, ceramics and more.

There’s much less of a food focus than the farmers markets in the area (like the excellent one in Noosa on Sundays—see our Noosa restaurants guide for our fave stalls), so this isn’t the place to shop for fresh produce.

You can find nuts, honey, hot sauces, and chutneys, and we picked up a lovely Thai curry paste.

There are quite a few prepared food stalls for breakfast—we ate Tibetan momos and Dutch mini pancakes—but we didn’t find the options as appealing as at Noosa’s market.

Even though we’re not really into shopping, we spent 90 minutes here. Shopping lovers will be in heaven.

Parking is $9 (card only). The market is popular but we didn’t find it overwhelming on a Wednesday arriving early.

20) Celebrate Christmas in July

The weather is slightly cooler in the Hinterland than on the coast, so it’s the best spot to celebrate Christmas in July. Don’t expect snow (afternoons can still be 20ºC+), but you can appreciate a fire and warming meal on the cool nights.

Secrets on the Lake had their Christmas tree up on our July visit and a festive dinner was available for one night with lunches throughout the month.

Other places with Christmas in July celebrations are Montville Cafe Bar & Grill and The Long Apron . Bookings are essential.

When we originally planned our Sunshine Coast trip, the beaches were our focus, but the rolling green hills and rainforests of the interior stole our hearts.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is well worth visiting whether you are looking for a relaxing, romantic break, an adventure-filled weekend of hikes and waterfall swims, or a leisurely day trip of shopping and eating.

I hope this guide has given you some ideas of what to do in Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

A Sunday Drive Through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

A Sunday Drive Through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

The Sunshine Coast has long been a lure for Australians, thanks to its beautiful wide beaches and, well, promise of sunshine. But with all that sea and surf it can be easy to overlook the lush hinterland that exists to the west of the Bruce Highway. This is a place of vertiginous ranges, lush Gondwana rainforest, and quaint country towns. And it’s all easily reachable on a lazy daytrip.

Once you’re beyond the fringes of the Brisbane CBD heading north on the Bruce Highway, bp Caboolture North looms as the ideal first spot to stop and fuel up for the day ahead. A 24-hour service station with the biggest Wild Bean Cafe in Australia, it’s here you can grab a barista-made iced latte made with Rainforest Alliance certified coffee, and any one of a stack of alternative milk options, including lactose-free, oat milk and soy milk. Grab a fresh pastry, classic toastie or chunky pie to go, fill up the car and point yourself north for a one-hour drive to Maleny.

A stroll around Maleny Just 45 minutes inland of the Sunshine Coast lies Maleny, a gorgeous town crammed with galleries, cafes and craft stores, with different spots to take in stunning views of the Glass House Mountains and nearby Blackall Range.

Never miss a Brisbane moment. Make sure you're subscribed to our newsletter today.

On a weekend head to the Maleny Sunday Market at the RSL hall in Bunya Street to grab some bargains before they’re snapped up. The stallholders here peddle country crafts, collectibles, vintage clothes, fresh produce, books and records, and handcrafted jewellery. Afterwards, take a wander along the winsome Maple Street (be sure to check out The Maleny Bookshop and the eclectic boutique clothes at Rather Bizr before getting back on the road and heading north along the range.

Walk around the Kondalilla Falls Circuit Kondalilla National Park is a tranquil patch of subtropical rainforest 20 minutes north of Maleny, near Montville. It’s a cool respite on a hot day, and the perfect place to stretch your legs. The bush and wildlife are mesmerising, but the star attraction here is the 80-metre-high Kondalilla Falls.

The Kondalilla Falls Circuit is a four kilometre walking track that takes you down the escarpment at the top of the waterfall to the forest floor below, before climbing back up (quite steeply) to the ridge line to return to the car park. The base of the waterfall is crying out for an Instagram post, and you can even take a dip in the natural rockpools at both the top and the bottom. Park at the Kondalilla Falls car park on Kondalilla Falls Road and allow about two hours for the walk.

Lunch at Mapleton Public House After a bushwalk and a swim you’ll be longing for lunch. The good news is you’re only an eight minute drive from Mapleton Public House (formally known as the Mapleton Tavern). Recently taken over by locals Ben Johnston and Jess Huddart, who run the nearby Falls Farm , the pair have years of experience in regenerative farming and organics.

Naturally, that ethos carries through to the kitchen, with a seasonal menu designed by ex- Spicers chef Cameron Matthews, who sources as much produce as possible from the farm and other local growers. The food changes frequently, but you might order a house-made minestrone soup, sourdough by local farm Ten Acres, beef tartare, and a pan-roasted carrot steak. The free-range chicken schnitzel (crisp on the outside, tender on the inside) with creamy potatoes, Falls Farm veggies and chicken gravy is a local favourite, as is the Angus ground-beef cheeseburger. Views from the sunny verandah stretch to the coast, while the interior retains the retro feel of an old-style country pub. It’s the perfect way to end your Sunday.

The Sunshine Coast hinterland is a short thirty minute drive from Sunshine Coast beaches and one of the very best road trips from Brisbane. If you’re contemplating an Australia road trip, this one on this Sunshine Coast Hinterland day trip in Queensland is hard to beat.

Situated on the Blackall ranges some 400 metres above sea level, the Sunshine Coast Hinterland attracts year round visitors. While southern staters are drawn to Queensland’s winter sunshine, locals are enjoying the cooler mountain temperatures experienced in the hinterland towns of Mapleton, Montville and Maleny.

The rainforest and green rollings hills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland provide a haven for artists and craftsmen and the array of artisan foods is dazzling.

Living at Coolum Beach , the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is one of our favourite Sunshine Coast activities. It is a quick and rewarding escape with endless possibilities. Regular visitors might zero in on their favourite town, restaurant or waterfall, but this post gives an overall view of the area, perfect for first timers or those wanting to spread their wings.

Road Trips from Brisbane – A Scenic drive through the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Option 1 – mapleton/montville/maleny/kenilworth/mapleton..

This scenic mountain road trip partly follows Blackall Range Tourist Drive #23, from the foothills of the Blackall Range, through the towns of Mapleton, Montville and Maleny. Route #23, is clearly marked with light brown road signs. From Maleny continue on Route #22 to Kenilworth returning to Mapleton via Obi Obi Road.

You can gain access to Mapleton and the Blackall Ranges from either Nambour or Landsborough. We started from Nambour.

Kenilworth can be saved for another day if time is short after all this leisurely Queensland road trip is about enjoying the pretty mountain towns and vistas, not merely ticking boxes.

The best thing about the Sunshine Coast Hinterland is it can be consumed in bite-sized pieces or savoured on a longer trip.

Option 2 – Mapleton/Kenilworth/Maleny/Montville/Mapleton***

To take Option 2 simply reverse the route by going directly from Mapleton to Kenilworth via Obi Obi Road.

***Read Option 2 Road Information below.

Sunshine Coast Hinterland Day Trips Map

Blackall Ranges Lookouts

There are quite a few lookouts on the Blackall Ranges.

Dulong Lookout is before Mapleton on the Nambour-Mapleton road and looks North.

Views from Mapleton and Montville, including Gerrards Lookout and nearby Balmoral Lookout have views to the East across bush and farmland to the ocean.

Mary Cairncross Park, McCarthy’s Lookout, One Tree Hill and Maleny Botanical Gardens/Bird World Lookouts look South over the Glass House Mountains toward Brisbane.

Information on individual Lookouts is given as they appear on the route.

Things to do in Mapleton Sunshine Coast Hinterland

First and last stop on this Sunshine Coast Hinterland day trip is Mapleton, accessed from Nambour, 100 km north of Brisbane, Queensland .

Getting to Mapleton from Nambour

Drive up Netherton Street, past Nambour General Hospital before leaving Nambour behind and quickly climbing on the Nambour/Mapleton Road.

There are coffee shops opposite Nambour hospital where you can pick up a coffee or lunch.

Range Care Op Shop Mapleton/Mapleton Lily Ponds/Mapleton Pub

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

Mapleton Hotel

This lovely old pub is on the main road through town. Climb the impressive staircase to check out the building and relax on the massive deck with a cold one. The views back to the coast are captivating.

Op Shop at Rangecare

Located in a lovely old Queenslander, Rangecare Op Shop, is a short distance along Obi Obi Road from Mapleton Pub. The old Queenslander home is a unique venue as far as Op Shops go. It’s wide treasure-filled timber verandahs overlook ponds and parklands.

Mapleton Lily Ponds

Pack your bargains in the car and walk through to Mapleton lily ponds. The surrounding gardens are pretty and you can enjoy the antics of waterbirds from the shore or foot bridge.

Mapleton Bakery now Sweet and Flour

Sweet and Flour Bakery at 3 Obi Obi Road sells fresh bread including sourdough and gluten free. It is a great morning tea stop with divine apple strudel and lamingtons.

Recommendation: Sweet and Flour is a good place for a sweet snack. Eat at the tables out the front or take away to Mapleton Lilyponds.

Mapleton Falls

Collage of trees and lookouts at Mapleton Falls National Park

How to get to Mapleton Falls from Mapleton

Continue 3 km along Obi Obi Road to Mapleton Falls National Park for walks and views of the valley 120 metres below. The wheelchair accessible Mapleton Falls lookout is 5 minutes or less from the carpark.

For views of the falls themselves take the 45 minute 1.3 km  Wompoo Circuit. Peregrine Lookout, accessible from Wompoo Circuit has views back to the falls.

Option 2 (Reverse Route) Road Information***

***From here the scenic loop road trip can be reversed by continuing along along Obi Obi road for 22 minutes to Kenilworth, then on to Maleny, Montville and Mapleton or return to the M1. When heading to Kenilworth from Mapleton there is a section of steep gravel road descending the Blackall Ranges. It is quite safe when dry and can be traversed in a two wheel drive. The Kenilworth to Maleny road is bitumen.

Gravel Road descending the Blackall Ranges from Mapleton to Kenilworth

To stay on Option 1 route, backtrack to Mapleton pub and continue from Mapleton to Montville, passing the small village of Flaxton en-route.

Kondalilla Falls Sunshine Coast Hinterland

How to get to kondalilla falls from mapleton.

The falls are closer to Montville than Maleny but on our route they come after Mapleton and before Montville. As far as waterfalls Sunshine Coast go, these are the bomb.

Collage of scenes from Kondalilla Falls National Park

What to do at Kondallilla National Park

  • Allow 2.5 hours to complete the 4.7 km hilly Kondalilla Falls walk.
  • If you’re short on time, the shortest and best option, is to walk down to the pool above the falls from Picnic Creek Circuit and from there walk to Kondallilla Falls lookout with views back to the waterfall. It’s all signposted.
  • Wear bathers under your clothes as there are no change facilities on the walk.
  • Perfect for a picnic lunch, BBQ or to spend the day.

If you’re thinking of a Sunshine Coast Hinterland wedding, the Chapel of Love on the left on Kondalilla Falls Road is quite impressive. More wedding chapels on the route are mentioned as we come to them.

Recommendation: Eat at Elements Cafe on Kondalilla Falls Road. Beautiful pastoral views from the dining room blend seamlessly with an interesting gift shop. I recommend the corn fritters and book ahead for a stunning high tea.

Things to Do in Montville Sunshine Coast Hinterland

It’s a short 3 minute drive from Kondalilla Falls to the picturesque village of Montville.

Crammed with interesting gift shops, bars, breweries, art galleries, restaurants, cuckoo clocks and historic buildings, Montville is a tourist’s dream.

Montville things to do centre around romantic dining and Montville restaurants with a view. Montville Shops specialise in artisan works and souvenirs and although there are some higher priced items, all budgets are catered for.

Have a drink at Montville Cafe Bar Grill

Situated in Montville main street, Montville Cafe Bar & Grill is the Montville Pub.

Explore Montville Town Centre

Enjoying Montville is as simple and as complicated as walking up one side of the street and down the other. There are distractions everywhere so be prepared to spend hours in Montville Queensland . The only way to avoid this is to drive through town without stopping or looking at Montville shops.

Shop till you drop

There are several art galleries in Montville. I snapped this shot through the window of a Montville Art Gallery so forgive the reflections. If you love art and would like to purchase some, hours can be spent perusing galleries.

An example of Montville Art with an underwater scene of two turtles in blue sun-streaked water

Whether you love window shopping or the kind that burns a hole in your credit card, you are in the right place in Montville.

Irrespective of your desire to shop, the main street of Montville is a lovely undulating walk, with tree covered parks, pretty flowers and places to sit and reflect upon your bank balance.

Don’t forget to drop in to the pretty white building that houses the Salvatian Army Montville Family Store for more bargain hunting.

St. Mary’s Church and Hall in the Village Green

About half way along the main street of Montville you will see the village green with six tall memorial trees to diggers who didn’t return from WWI.

On the corner is a signpost to Hunchy, a town at the base of the ranges (this is one way to exit back to the M1). On the left hand side of this street is St. Mary’s Church (1914) and Church bell while on the right is the St. Mary’s Church Hall (1942).

A collage of St Marys Church, Church Bell and Hall in Montville

Both are in use today. The church is open every day for personal prayer. I popped in for a look but didn’t take photos as there was a reading taking place. The interior is timber with a simple timber cross, beautiful timber pews and stained glass windows. The garden out the back has somewhat overgrown views.

The Church Hall is used for a weekly Meditation Group and functions.

Where to Eat in Montville

Mayfield on montville view.

Table with a view at Mayfield Patisserie Montville

Recommendation: Eat at Mayfields Patisserie and Chocolates Cafe, part of the Mayfield on Montville complex and our favourite Montville cafe. It’s a great budget option and worth going there just for drop-dead-gorgeous views over rainforest and farmland to the distant coast.

We love their budget range of impressive monster gourmet sausage rolls. I was more than happy with my pork and apple roll served with a separate relish and a well-dressed salad. They also specialise in sinful cakes and chocolates.

The Edge Montville

Adjoining Mayfields Patisserie is “The Edge Montville” with the same fantastic view and a more extensive and a slightly pricier menu.

Montville Parking

If you’re lucky you will find an on-street park in the main street. If not head to Russell Family Park free off-street car park behind Montville Information Centre, or at Montville IGA.

Lake Baroon or Baroon Pocket Dam

Continuing on the Montville Maleny road, turn right into Western Ave. to Baroon Pocket dam for a swim or BBQ. When you reach the dam turn right to the spillway or just before arriving turn left to Secrets on the Lake Montville and a parking area by the lake.

Road Trip from Brisbane to Romantic Secrets on the Lake overlooking Lake Baroon

There is a deceivingly small picnic area behind the car park that overlooks the lake. The further you walk into it the more individual areas containing BBQ’s and tables appear. There are toilet amenities, information boards and a small playground.

Baroon Pocket Dam is the largest water supply in the Sunshine Coast network. No motor boats are allowed but other craft are fine.

Romantic Getaways Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Montville and Maleny are the joint hinterland epicentre of the romantic week-end getaway. .

A romantic place to dine near Montville is Secrets on the Lake 5.9 km from Montville Info Kiosk. Ask for a romantic table for two on the deck with views over Lake Baroon. For the best tables book before arrival.

This is a special kind of place. Lots of love has been lavished on the building, with intricate carved wood details including on handrails and doors and even in the Ladies Loo.

Secrets on the Lake also caters for weddings and events.

In winter the wonderful inside sitting area with it’s impressive free standing fireplace is romance personified. Check out the huge carved timber day lounge and browse for gifts.

Secrets on the Lake has luxurious tree-houses. They definitely are up in the trees and look very rustic from the outside, yet are apparently luxurious within.

Rejoining the Montville-Maleny road take a quick detour left to Gerrard Lookout on Balmoral Ridge just 5 minutes and 5.4 km from the Montville Visitor Information Centre.

On the way to Maleny take a left turn into Landsborough-Maleny Road and a right into Mountain View Road. It’s not far to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve with it’s walking tracks, Picnic area, Information Centre and Lookout.

This is well-known spot for views over the Glasshouse Mountains, between the Blackall Ranges and Brisbane.

Recommendation: Eat at Mary Cairncross Cafe otherwise known as Mountain View Cafe. This delightful venue is great for morning tea or lunch with a view and has affordable eating options. The fireplace holds promise for cool rainy mountain days.

Glasshouse Mountain View

Mountain View Cafe and the Glass House Mountains

Mary Cairncross Lookout

The deck above the cafe is great for learning about and photographing the Glass House Mountains and there is a 150 metre mid canopy rainforest boardwalk attached.

It is also possible to cross the road but it can be dangerous and the view from above the cafe is probably better.

Mary Cairncross Park Picnic Area

Adjoining the car park is Mary Cairncross Park picnic area with shelters, playground, BBQ’s and a wide grassy area surrounded by rainforest.

Recommendation: Mary Cairncross reserve is a good option if you’re looking for things to do on the Sunshine Coast with kids.

How to get to Maleny from Mary Cairncross Park via Maleny Dairies

From Mary Cairncross turn right into Mountain View Road and right again into McCarthy Road shortly after Weddings at Tiffany’s church. Tiffany’s has the best views of all the wedding churches but doesn’t photograph well from the road.

The wedding church shown below is actually named Little White Wedding Church and is on the right immediately before arriving at the family owned Maleny Dairies.

Maleny Dairies

Tours are held Monday to Saturday and take 1.5 hours. The on-site milk bar sells drinks, snacks, dairy products like milk, yoghurt and cream but not cheese. You can also buy packaged meats and there is a picnic shelter and BBQ facilities.

How to get to Maleny from Mary Cairncross Park via Maleny Botanical Gardens

From Mary Cairncross continue 3.9 km along Mountain View Road Route #23 to McCarthy’s lookout and Maleny Botanical Gardens (Maleny Bird World).

One Tree Hill Unofficial Lookout

Before McCarthy’s lookout is a vacant block with a fallen down tree. It is a wonderful view and would make for some fun photos, but this is private property and permission should be sought from the owner next door before entering the property (it has a barbed wire fence).

This is a significant site for the owner and there could also be cattle on the property that can’t at first be seen.

Photograph of One Tree Hill taken from the verge without entering the property.

McCarthy’s Lookout

McCarthy's Lookout on our Australia Road Trip in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

McCarthy’s Lookout has a large covered shelter with some seating and is not far after one tree hill.

McCarthy's Lookout Sunshine Coast Hinterland is a large shelter with a green roof and fantastic views of the glass house mountains

The lookout is named after Joseph McCarthy who at age 40 came looking for cedar trees in the Blackall Ranges in 1877. He purchased a 640 acre farm, McCarthy’s Farm, where the lookout stands today. It stayed in the family for 71 years. Read more about the history of the McCarthys here .

Maleny Botanical Gardens/Maleny Bird World/Lookout

From McCarthy’s Lookout it’s only a few minutes to the joint venture of Maleny Botanical Gardens and Maleny Bird World. Enjoy the landscaped gardens, tour the bird aviary, get your photo taken with the colourful birds, or enjoy the best view of the glasshouse mountains with a coffee in a pavilion. Adult entry to both gardens and aviary costs $35.  Read more about that here .

A lot of the birds here are rescue birds so are familiar with people and might come and land on your shoulder. You can get your photo taken with colourful parrots (for a price) without going into the Aviary. The birds sit in their own shelters or with their mate, with a description of themselves, where they originate from and any tricks they like performing.

Many locals bring their visitors here and find buying a year pass is an economical way to pay for themselves.

Collage of birds and gardens at Maleny Botanical Gardens and Maleny Bird World

The entrance to the gardens and bird world is via a very steep road down from route #23, but you will see the info sign displaying costs on the road above.

From Maleny Bird World follow Maleny Stanley River Road Route #23 to Maleny.

From Maleny either rejoin the M1 via Landsborough for the dash home, or continue on to Kenilworth to experience some country hospitality.

Maleny, Sunshine Coast Hinterland

Situated amongst rolling green hills, the town of Maleny is smack bang in the middle of Dairy country and slightly Hippy in character. It attracts less day trippers than Montville and has an appealing local community vibe.

Collage of Shops and Markets at Maleny Queensland

Strolling down the main street with it’s cool cafes, parks, book shops, health food and gourmet food shops is a relaxing pastime and the thing to do in Maleny.

Street view of Maleny

Maple Street Co-op. Society

While exploring Maleny’s streetscape drop into Maple Street Co-op Society. An intriguing organic food shop that is seriously comprehensive.

If you’re looking for special dietary foods this place is jam crammed full of them so bring a shopping bag to stock up your pantry (or buy one of the variety available for sale).

Outside on the footpath is a lovely assortment of budget priced healthy organic potted herbs and exotic pot plants like Hoyas. I was so tempted and if I hadn’t recently stocked up, would have had a ball.

Where to Eat in Maleny

Maleny food company.

We always indulge in a Gelato or two from Maleny Food Co. They also offer reasonably priced breakfasts, burgers, grazing plates, sandwiches plus a kids menu. Collect a picnic lunch with 48 hours notice or a cheese box with 24 hours notice.

Maleny Food Co. are passionate about cheese. They have a dedicated cold room which is worth popping into for a look or a taste. The cold room has more than 250 Australian and International cheeses maturing to perfection. The photo above only shows a sample of what is available.

Recommendation: Eat at Sarah’s Unplugged. Dog Friendly. Kid Friendly. Lots of eating areas. Great Burgers.

Where to Drink in Maleny

Brouhaha brewery.

View inside Brouhaha Brewery Maleny

Brouhaha is located in a mini shopping centre which is itself rather strange at first, but once inside it’s not odd at all.

Yes – that is real live Devil’s Ivy hanging from the ceiling planters.

Continue through the Brewery interior onto the airy deck for lovely tree views, beer and bar meals.

Open since 2016, Brouhaha have sculpted their brews from 30 down to a core of 8 enhanced by seasonal brews, collabs and limited releases.

Maleny Hotel

Collage showing Facade, Bistro Eating Area and Garden Eating Area at Maleny Hotel

100 year old Maleny Hotel was once the meeting place for bullock drivers but has changed along with the times.

There are many different drinking and eating areas in this hotel, with lots of beautiful polished timber and inviting grassed area at the rear.

Bookshops in Maleny

There are two bookshops in the main street of Maleny that bookaholics will delight in.

I found the final in a travel memoir trilogy at Maleny Bookshop at 41 Maple Street, having searched for it far and wide. The pre-loved book was in perfect condition and reasonably priced. The owner lavishes love on her books and keeps them in genre and author alphabetical order, making them super easy to find.

P.S. Books is not far away and looked like a great shop too.

Spicers Tamarind Resort

Find the turn-off into Obi Lane South at the 2.4 km mark past Maleny State School heading toward Montville. It’s a further 1.2 km along the lane passing Spicers Tamarind Resort on the right to get the the falls carpark.

As well as luxury accommodation, Spicers hides a gorgeous dining room specialising in Asian Cuisine and extensive landscaped gardens. Guests can access Gardners Falls from the gardens.

Take a coffee on the deck or in the garden and watch the water dragons play.

Coffee in the garden at Spicers Tamarind Retreat

Recommendation: Take coffee in the gardens at Spicers Tamarind Retreat and experience budget priced luxury.

Gardner’s Falls

These falls are not huge but the water is refreshingly chilly. A rope swing into the pool from on high (too high for me) attracts crowds of onlookers. The falls descend into the pool from ground level so you don’t look up to them (unless you’re in the pool).

The large flat rock surrounding the pool invites picnics and sun-bathing.

Take the easy 300 m walk from carpark to falls pool. The path follows the creek with little pools along the way perfect for children to play in.

Maleny to Kenilworth Road Trip

Follow the brown Kenilworth Tourist Drive Signs out of Maleny.

Descending the Blackall Ranges Maleny to Kenilworth

Driving down the Blackall Ranges from Maleny to Kenilworth is dramatically quick. Within 10 minutes of departing Maleny we arrived at the bottom of the range. It is fun, without too many twists and turns and before you know it, tourist towns and mountains are a thing of the past and wide open farmland is your new companion.

On the way to Kenilworth the road bypasses the little town of Witta. If it’s the third Saturday of the month, stop off at their country market.

There are a heap of day trip and camping possibilities on the way to Kenilworth.

Booloumba Falls and Booloumba Creek Camping

These falls and campgrounds are in Conondale National Park and are accessed by 4WD roads. A 4WD is required to cross Booloumba Creek to the camping and day use areas.

The turnoff to the camping areas and day areas are 13 km past the small town of Conondale. Sunday Creek Road is a further 500m.

Camping Areas 1 and 3 are for tents only. Camping Area 4 caters for high clearance campervan, camper trailers and caravans. Mysteriously there is no Camping Area 2.

Allow 2 hours for the 3km return walk to the falls.

This required more time than we had available, but after it rains next, we will be returning for a dedicated camping trip to explore the campgrounds and falls them all in detail.

Cambroon Caravan Park

Cambroon offers farmstay-like experiences namely, collecting eggs, petting guinea pigs and feeding deer. There are hiking paths and BYO horse riding trails. Facilities include a free laundry, hot showers, BBQ’s, Firewood for Sale, Camp Kitchen and dogs are welcome. You can even park your tiny home in their Tiny Village.

They offer powered and unpowered sights, a bunk house, Jungle House (2 bedroom cabin) or you can just come for the day to enjoy the activities for $5.00/person 3 y.o. and over.

Little Yabba Park

Continue along Maleny-Kenilworth Road #22, stopping 6.2 km south of Kenilworth at Little Yabba Park.

Bauhinia Trees and Amenities Block at Little Yabba Park

This pretty free camping sunshine coast spot is the starting point for a 1100 m long (Moreton Bay) Fig Tree Walk. The fig trees produce purple fruits that the resident Woompoo Doves thrive on. Other wildlife includes the ubiquitous bush turkeys, fruit bats and possums.

The Park has long drop toilets, BBQ’s, Picnic Tables and water but no drinking water. Little Yabba Creek joins the Mary River here so the swimming is good.

Be sure to read the information board, to familiarize yourself with the giant stinging trees.

The Mary River at Little Yabba Park is a popular kayaking stop on a longer Mary River trip. This day there was a misty rain falling.

Canoes and Kayaks on the Mary River

Charlie Moreland Camping Area

Turn left from the highway after Little Yabba Park to Charlie Moreland Camping area. Charlie is divided into a day use area and camping areas, including a horse paddock.

Charlie Moreland Camping Area accessed from Kenilworth Tourist Drive

The campground is approx. 5 km along the gravel Sunday Creek road suitable for 2WD vehicles. It was very dry and hot during our day visit and we suggest going after rain. Attractions include easy walks, swimming and wildlife visits from pademelons in afternoon/evenings, Wompoo pigeons, black cockatoos, sulphur crested cockatoos, pythons (eek) and campfires when there are no fire bans. Book camp sites beforehand and BYO wood.

Things to do in Kenilworth

The reward for driving that little bit further beyond Mapleton, Montville and Maleny to Kenilworth, is a charming taste of Queensland Country Life that harks back to the 1930’s.

Situated in the Upper Mary River Valley at the back of the Blackall Range, Kenilworth has a population of 300 and an Entrepreneurial spirit.

Kenilworth’s Annual Arts Festival, formerly known as Kenilworth Celebrates, was on 4th – 7th October 2019.

This Annual Festival was held on 29th June, 2019.

The Upper Mary River at Kenilworth

Turn right at the Showgrounds opposite Kenilworth Dairies into Charles Street to find Kenilworth Park close to the Mary River. There is a sculpted stone park seat featuring the lung fish and information board about the endangered Mary River Turtle, Australian Lung Fish and Mary River Cod.

Explore Kenilworth’s Main Street.

Everything happens in Kenilworth’s main street. Coming from Little Yabba Park direction, arrive at the southern end of the main street where Kenilworth Cheese Factory has free cheese tastings daily and an extensive range of gourmet produce. The ice-creams are beautiful and there is some seating out the front.

Drag yourself away to walk north past the leafy Kenilworth Park, delving into some interesting shops and cafes. We recommend our tried and tested Nanna McGinns Scones jam and cream on the deck or eating in at Kenilworth Bakery – we can vouch for Pasties.

Kenilworth Main Street in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland

I love the pretty angel statue at Kenilworth House, a private residence at the northern end of town opposite the pub.

The pub has a tempting menu, art deco interior, historic photos and timber deck out the back.

Recommendation: Ladies will love Johanna Designs funky boutique crammed full of clothes and accessories and extreme eaters will have of course already pre-ordered a famous Kenilworth Bakery 1kg Doughnut.

Camping at Kenilworth Showgrounds

Many tourists that pass through Kenilworth are on an Around Australia road trip and camp at the popular and budget friendly Kenilworth Showgrounds campground.

Kenilworth to Mapleton

Drive down Obi Obi Road for 22 minutes to reconnect with our starting point at Mapleton.

Free Camping at Obi Obi Creek

13 km from Kenilworth on Obi Obi Road there are two free camps.

Country Scenery at Obi Obi Creek Campground

On the right of the road is Bonney Park a treed park with flat ground and tall trees.

On the left after the Obi Obi Creek is Obi Obi Creek free camp. It is more or less situated in the dry creek bed which could be a worry for flash flooding. There was a feral rooster in a tree on our last visit who may or may not have ended up in someone’s pot by now.

Enjoy the lovely drive through farmland on the way to the Blackall Ranges and Mapleton.

This community owned hall is a wedding and function venue available for a limited number of functions each year.

The Blackall Ranges

Continuing on, the road climbs back through the Blackall Ranges. It is steep but bitumen from this direction. The road is divided at the range with a steep gravel section from the Mapleton side.

You will see the turnoff to Mapleton Falls on the left before Mapleton.

Hi Kathy, Yes I thoroughly recommend a date day. As far as I’m concerned it’s a chance to indulge in morning tea or lunch (or both) and explore places I’ve never been plus it’s a chance to focus on each other. It sounds ridiculous when retired to actually not connect with each other more often. We love our “days off” lol.

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is wonderful. It was our favourite go to as an escape from Brisbane. I loved the rolling green countryside, amazing views, relaxed atmosphere and feeling as though we’d gone a million miles from the city.

Thanks for a great article!

Thank you for your comprehensive article. We used your information to plan our trip from Montville to Kenilworth to Maleny over 3 days. Some activities were affected by covid restrictions, but they were in the minority. Such a beautiful part of the world!

I’ve been out that way in the last week and done some more exploring. It certainly is beautiful.

What You'll See

Gardener’s Falls

We’ll pick you up bright and early in our comfy, air-conditioned minibus for the short drive through the pretty countryside to our first stop, Gardener’s Falls , a hidden diamond just a short stroll from Obi Obi Creek. Nature has carved out a series of shallow pools cascading into a deeper one, all surrounded by native forest, giving it a timeless, calming quality. Need a calming, meditative start to a relaxing day? You got it!

McCarthy’s Lookout

Amble back into the minibus for the scenic drive through rolling Jinbara Country up to McCarthy’s Lookout , where you can sit and gaze at the dazzling 360° panorama around you – across the deep green of the plains to Mt Beerwah and the other mountains of the Glass House range, eroded into strange shapes by time and weather, and over to the Sunshine Coast. You’ll get a feel for this timeless landscape as you inhale the pure mountain air.

Morning Coffee & Tea Stop

After experiencing the wonder of Sunshine Coast topography, it’s time to relax with a freshly brewed morning coffee (or tea!) and a selection of petite cakes (3) per serving at our favourite artisan cafe, the Maleny Food Co. in the charmingly quirky rural town of Maleny. Renowned for showcasing local produce and its award-winning ice cream, Maleny Food Co. is the perfect place for a relaxing pit stop to recharge for your next delight.

Howells Knob Lookout

Just a short drive away through farmland (and taking care on the road – there’s lots of fascinating wildlife around here!)  you’ll come to the peaceful and secluded Howell’s Knob Lookout . Shh! It’s our little secret – it’s not on the tourist trail.  You’ll gain a different perspective on the rolling landscape and mountains beyond. After a short stop here, head back to the minivan for something very special…

Fig Tree Walk at the Imbil State Forest

From the space and quiet of the mountaintop lookout, you’ll suddenly enter a different world. A world of deep green canopy: of piccabeen palm, white cedar and Moreton Bay fig. You’re in the heart of the lush rainforest of the Imbil State Forest. As you take your time on a 45-minute easy-route Fig Tree walking track , enjoy the chorus of birdsong from over 120 species that make their home here. You may spot a brush turkey rustling in the undergrowth, or, if you’re very lucky, a shy red-necked pademelon.

Lunch at the Kenilworth Hotel

So far, you’ve enjoyed a feast for the senses but now it’s time for a feast for your tummy because it’s lunchtime and that means a relaxing stop at the Kenilworth Hotel . The hotel is an architectural gem, built way back in 1939, in the Art Deco-flavoured Streamline style of the time. It’s also a friendly, popular watering-hole, and sidelines as a craft brewery. The chef sources local produce to create a menu packed with classics and specials of the day – there’ll be far too many things to tempt you! Enjoy your two-course lunch at a leisurely pace as you fuel up for your final stop on your tour.

Tour Group Lunch Menu. Sunshine Coast Day Tours

Kenilworth Dairies

Work off your lunch with an hour of free time to spend wandering around the Kenilworth Dairies , an artisan cheese factory that was once owned by global manufacturers Kraft, but was bought out by the locals, and is now in the hands of a local dairy family, the Cochranes. Watch how the skilled cheesemakers craft a range of their boutique hand-made cheeses –  two of them being Queensland Red Malling and Roma Malling cheeses, still made using the original 1920 recipe. If there’s a tasting happening (and if you’ve still room in your tum), do take advantage of it! The dairy also makes luscious chocolate mousses and yoghurts so thick you can stand a spoon in them.

At 2.30 pm we’ll round you up back into the minivan for the comfortable drive through the picturesque scenery of the Sunshine Coast back to your drop-off point.

3-Day Sunshine Coast Itinerary: the ultimate road trip

Opens in a new tab.

With year-round sunshine, pristine beaches, sprawling national parks, and an incredible food scene, Sunshine Coast is your perfect beachside retreat any time of the year.

Since the Sunshine Coast offers a great collection of stunning beaches and national parks, you will need at least three days on the Sunshine Coast to get a feel of this coastal paradise . More time is always preferred if your travel schedule allows it.

Here, I have put together a detailed 3-day itinerary for visiting the Sunshine Coast. I hope it’s helpful to you.

Day 1: Brisbane to Sunshine Coast

For most people, you will likely be visiting the Sunshine Coast from its capital, Brisbane. This can be done either by driving or by public transport.

The drive between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast only takes about 90 minutes and is relatively straightforward. This is also my suggested mode of transport when exploring the Sunshine Coast.

Although you can easily reach the Sunshine Coast from Brisbane by public transport , you will likely have trouble reaching many of the hinterland attractions by public transport.

If you haven’t already got a car, you can easily rent one from either Brisbane or the Sunshine Coast for the duration of your visit. Some car rental companies even offer return service at a location different from your pick-up location.

From my experience,  East Coast Car Rentals  and  Jucy  have the best pricing;   Budget  and  Hertz  tend to have a lot more pick-up locations and vehicles to choose from.

Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout

Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout

Wild Horse Mountain is just off Bruce Highway, about 1-hour drive north of Brisbane .

The Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout offers a spectacular view of the beautiful Sunshine Coast and the majestic Glasshouse Mountain. It makes the perfect spot to stretch your legs along the drive between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.

Ample parking is available at the base of Wild Horse Mountain, which is only a short 2 minutes drive off Bruce Highway .

The hike from the base of Wild Horse Mountain to the lookout platform at the summit is along a 700-metre bitumen road, but it is a rather steep walk. So make sure you wear comfy shoes when visiting.

It took me about 10 minutes to reach Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout from the car park , but you will want to plan some extra time to enjoy the views at the lookout.

Once you have stepped onto the lookout tower (it is, in fact, a fire tower used during high fire danger seasons for spotting fires in this region), you will be presented with a 360-degree, unobstructed view of the Sunshine Coast, the striking Glasshouse Mountain, and the distant Moreton Bay area.

Glasshouse Mountain Lookout

Glasshouse Mountain Lookout

Glasshouse Mountain Lookout is another fire tower used for fire spotting during the high fire danger seasons. It provides an intimate view of the lush green Sunshine Coast Hinterland with the beautiful coastline in the distance.

Glasshouse Mountain Lookout is also off Bruce Highway but on the opposite side of Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout. The drive from Bruce Highway to Glasshouse Mountain Lookout is much longer in comparison and takes about 15 minutes .

However, you can drive directly to the lookout tower at Glasshouse Mountain with no hiking involved. So it can be an excellent option for people with mobility issues.

That said, there were a lot more people at Glasshouse Mountain Lookout than at Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout when I visited. With limited parking available at Glasshouse Mountain Lookout, it was a bit of a challenge when it came to finding a car park.

A couple more bonus points for visiting Glasshouse Mountain Lookout are: public toilets are available here (there were no toilets at Wild Horse Mountain Scenic Lookout) & dirt tracks are available nearby for 4WDs and dirt bikes.

After checking out Sunshine Coast’s beautiful hinterland, we will now drive directly to the heart of Sunshine Coast to explore its incredible coastline.

Buddina Beach

Point Cartwright Lighthouse

Point Cartwright Lighthouse is a modern lighthouse in the gorgeous Point Cartwright Reserve, offering scenic walking tracks & a spectacular view of Mooloolah River Mouth and the wild ocean.

Once you have parked at Point Cartwright Lighthouse, you will be immediately presented with an alluring view of the expansive Buddina Beach and the deep blue ocean. A set of timber staircases is available near the car park if you want to stroll along this soft sandy beach and dip in its refreshing water.

Signage near the car park also suggested sea turtles are regularly spotted in the water here, but I couldn’t spot any during my visit. But you may want to have a try too.

After checking out Buddina Beach, follow the walking track uphill to Point Cartwright Lighthouse to admire the views from there. Since Point Cartwright Lighthouse stands on the highest point of this headland, you can typically get a rather impressive view of this stunning coastline from where it stands.

Right next to Point Cartwright Lighthouse, there is a massive water tank, Point Cartwright Water Tank , with colourful mural art. It was a beautiful ocean-themed mural when I visited & well worth checking out when in this area.

Continue to follow the coastline around Point Cartwright Reserve, and you will eventually head down to the peaceful Mooloolah River Mouth . With benches along its picturesque tree-lined riverbank, this area is the perfect spot to relax and watch the world go by.

A loop walk around Point Cartwright Reserve only takes 15-20 minutes. But you will likely want to spend more time admiring the idyllic views along your walk.

Public toilets can be located near the Point Cartwright Reserve car park.

After a relaxing stroll around Point Cartwright Reserve, we will head down to nearby Mooloolaba Beach for lunch and a cool swim.

Mooloolaba Beach

Mooloolaba Beach

Mooloolaba Beach is a popular area among locals and visitors, with its soft sandy foreshore and buzzing esplanade. It is the perfect spot to spend an entire afternoon relaxing along the water.

As a patrolled beach , Mooloolaba Beach is great for a cool swim in its calm water. Volleyball nets are available along Mooloolaba Beach for those interested. Public toilets and showers are located right next to the beach for convenience.

Various shops and restaurants can be easily located along Mooloolaba Esplanade , providing a range of excellent lunch and dinner options overlooking the beautiful Mooloolaba Beach.

You can also find the lively Mooloolaba Wharf across the road from Mooloolaba Beach’s volleyball court. This is, in fact, my favourite place to grab a bite near Mooloolaba Beach.

Mooloolaba Wharf houses a diverse range of eateries, many serving the freshest catch of the day . It also has a good selection of boutique stores , which are worth checking out too.

While you are here at Mooloolaba Wharf, make sure you join one of the cruise tours departing from Mooloolaba Wharf to explore the peaceful Mooloolah River and its beautiful canals. A few of the cruise tours you may wish to check out are:

  • Mooloolaba Sunset Cruise

SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast is a massive marine park, located between Mooloolaba Beach and Mooloolaba Wharf. It is home to over 10,000 sea creatures, such as sharks, seals, penguins, rays, jellyfish, and many more. It is a great place to be surrounded by all kinds of marine animals & especially interesting for families with kids.

Once you have visited Mooloolaba Wharf / SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast, make sure you take a stroll along the well-maintained Coastal Walkway for a sunset stroll towards Alexandra Headland.

Alexandra Headland

Alexandra Headland

North of Mooloolaba Beach is a 2-kilometre stretch of picturesque coastline with stunning rock formations and pristine sandy beaches. A well-maintained walkway is available along this incredible coastline to take you from the buzzing Mooloolaba Beach to the lesser-known Alexandra Headland Beach.

This walk only takes less than 30 minutes one way & makes an ideal sunset stroll with multiple beach access, so you can easily check out the idyllic beaches and rock pools along your walk.

There are also many impressive vantage points along this coastal walk, where you can obtain a bird’s eye view of this beautiful coastline.

Many lizards were resting under the trees and bushes along this walk when I visited. Some people find them cute, but I’m afraid of reptiles in general. They won’t harm you, but you may want to watch out for them if you are also scared of lizards.

Once you have arrived at Alexandra Headland Beach , the coastal landscape opens up and turns into a long stretch of golden beach. It extends all the way to Maroochydore Beach, where it meets with Maroochy River Mouth.

Restaurants and bars are available along Alexandra Parade & it can be a great option for dinner with a marvellous sunset view over Alexandra Headland Beach .

Day 2: Sunshine Coast Hinterland

On the second day of this Sunshine Coast visit, we will start the day with a morning walk in the beautiful hinterland before checking out some interesting local attractions . Towards the afternoon, we will head back to the stunning beachfront to explore the charming Coolum Beach .

Buderim Forest Park

Buderim Forest Park

Buderim Forest Park is a green oasis in the hinterland, only a 15-minute drive west of Mooloolaba Beach .

There are two access points for Buderim Forest Park. The most popular one is via Quorn Close , on the southern end of Buderim Forest Park. This park entry is closer to the beloved Serenity Falls. It offers access to a shorter 20-minute loop walk around the Serenity Falls & a longer 1.5-hour return walk along the tranquil Martins Creek .

The other access point for Buderim Forest Park is via Lindsay Road , on the park’s northern end. From here, you can take the 1.5-hour return walk along Martins Creek to check out Serenity Falls at the opposite end of Buderim Forest Park. The first section of the walking track from Lindsay Road entry is a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk , which can be an excellent option for wheelchairs and prams.

The walking tracks within Buderim Forest Park will take you through open eucalypt forests to ancient rainforests. With the lush green ferns and tall canopies, you will be in complete disbelief that this park is only a 15-minute drive from the buzzing sunny coast you have just visited.

Regardless of the walking trail you choose, you will eventually find a charming elevated wooden bridge over a beautiful waterfall, the Serenity Falls . It is not a big waterfall but does create a few rock pools beneath, which are popular for visitors to swim in.

Tips: The track can get quite muddy and slippery around Serenity Falls, so be careful around there.

Car parks and public toilets are available via both entrances. You can also find picnic and BBQ facilities near the car parks.

The Ginger Factory

The Ginger Factory

After a morning hike in Buderim Forest Park, we will take a 25-minute drive to visit an iconic Sunshine Coast attraction, The Ginger Factory.

The Ginger Factory is where you can find everything ginger related ! Here, you can find dried ginger cubes, ginger chocolates, ginger cordials, alcoholic ginger beverages, ginger honey, ginger ice cream, ginger scones, ginger beer battered fish, and you name it! It is a fun place to visit for all ages.

Entry to The Ginger Factory is free . Once you are here, you can browse and purchase from its vast selection of ginger products & check out the Ginger Cafe for lunch . There is also a decent-sized rainforest walk for everyone to enjoy.

Guided Factory Tour and Live Bee Show are available for discovering the paddock-to-plate story at The Ginger Factory & tickets are required to attend these guided tours. Free tastings of these delicious ginger products are available during the guided tours.

For families with kids, why not check out the Ginger Train and Overboard Boat Ride , which can be great fun for your little ones? Tickets are required for both the Ginger Train and the Overboard Boat Ride.

Once you have visited The Ginger Factory, you can also check out the Nutworks & Chocolate Factory , just opposite The Ginger Factory. Here, you can taste and purchase from a vast selection of macadamia nuts and chocolates. This is another iconic attraction on the Sunshine Coast.

Eumundi Markets

If you are visiting on a Wednesday or Saturday , make sure you also check out the famous Eumundi Markets, which is only a short 10-minute drive from The Ginger Factory.

Eumundi Markets is a huge open-air market with hundreds of stalls focussing on street foods and artisan gifts . With live music and a cool vibe, Eumundi Markets is an awesome place to spend a couple of hours.

Coolum Beach

After spending most of the day in Sunshine Coast’s charming hinterland, let’s now head back to the coast for a relaxing afternoon along the beach.

Coolum Beach

Coolum Beach is a wide sandy beach about halfway between Mooloolaba and Noosa Heads. It offers an open view of the wild ocean & backed by a vibrant esplanade with various shops and eateries. Being a patrolled beach with decent surf breaks, Coolum Beach makes the perfect spot to spend the afternoon swimming, surfing, and relaxing .

Towards the southern end of Coolum Beach, you can find a beautiful boardwalk along the top of a rocky headland. This boardwalk offers a spectacular coastal view of Coolum Beach and beyond. It can also take you directly to the pristine First Bay Coolum Beach , nicely tucked away by the surrounding headlands.

Mount Coolum National Park

If you still have some time after checking out Coolum Beach, why not check out the views from Mount Coolum Summit?

Mount Coolum is a just over 200-metre tall, dome-shaped mountain, which provides a breathtaking panoramic view of Coolum Beach and the nearby hinterland.

Although it is not a long hike from the base to the summit of Mount Coolum, it is a relatively steep climb with lots of steps, so you will need to plan at least 1.5-2 hours for a return trip when visiting Mount Coolum National Park.

Alternatively, you can check out Lows Lookout instead.

Lows Lookout is located on a small hilltop, just behind Coolum Beach. It is at the end of a residential street with a few designated car parks nearby, so you can drive straight to it for a bird’s eye view of Coolum Beach and the nearby mountain ranges.

That said, due to its low altitude and the overgrown trees nearby, the views from Lows Lookout are not as spectacular as from Mount Coolum.

Marcoola Beach

Yaroomba Beach to Mudjimba Beach

If you are more interested in the sand and beaches, instead of a hike up Mount Coolum, why not check out the long stretch of sandy beach between Yaroomba and Mudjimba?

From Yaroomba to Mudjimba , you can find an over 10-kilometre stretch of soft sandy beach, perfect for swimming and surfing . It is one of the most peaceful beaches along the famous Sunshine Coast. So it makes the ideal beach getaway for those who just want to be away from the crowd.

During the whale-migrating season (June to October), the open beach between Yaroomba and Mudjimba is also great for whale watching . The whales were relatively close to shore when I visited, but I still suggest bringing a pair of binoculars if you have them.

A well-maintained boardwalk is available parallel to the foreshore area between Yaroomba and Marcoola . It is an excellent place for a sunset stroll . If you have a bicycle, bring it along, as it is also a great place for cycling .

Day 3: Noosa Heads

On the last day of this 3-day Sunshine Coast trip, we will head up to Noosa to check out the most famous region on the Sunshine Coast, Noosa Heads.

Tea Tree Bay

Noosa National Park

Noosa National Park is undoubtedly the most picturesque place in Noosa. It is home to tranquil rainforests and numerous pristine beaches. It is by far my favourite place to visit in Noosa Heads.

Located only one kilometre east of Noosa Heads Main Beach and the buzzing Hastings Street, you can visit Noosa National Park either by car or on foot from Noosa Heads Main Beach/Hastings Street.

There are many different walking tracks within Noosa National Park & the most popular walking trail is the Noosa Coastal Walk, a 10.8-kilometre return walk along the idyllic coastline of Noosa Headland. It also provides access to numerous pristine beaches and breathtaking lookouts along the walk. Among them, the most notable spots are:

  • Boiling Pot Lookout : a spectacular view of the wild ocean swells crashing onto the rocks beneath you, making it look like a pot of boiling water.
  • Tea Tree Bay Beach : a secluded beach for swimming and surfing. Located only a 15-minute walk from the main entrance, you may want to bring your surfboard to hit the waves at this beautiful beach.
  • Dolphin Point Lookout : a stunning lookout to reconnect with nature. There are pods of dolphins to be spotted from this lookout, but you’ll likely need to bring a pair of binoculars. Migrating whales can also be spotted between June and October.
  • Fairy Pools : picturesque rock pool, which you can swim in during low tide.
  • Hell’s Gate : for a breathtaking view of Alexandra Bay.

Hasting Street

Hastings Street

After spending the morning in Noosa National Park, reward yourself with a tasty lunch and some retail therapy at Noosa’s iconic Hastings Street.

Hastings Street is a shopping strip parallel to the famous Noosa Heads Main Beach. It offers a great selection of  fashion boutiques ,  beachside resorts ,  trendy cafes ,  high-end restaurants , and  lively bars . It is the perfect place to unwind and fill your stomach in Noosa Heads.

Noosa Heads Main Beach

Just a short walk from the vibrant Hastings Street, you will find a soft sandy foreshore area at Noosa Heads Main Beach. With its calmer water and buzzing shopping street nearby, Noosa Heads Main Beach is perfect for spending an afternoon relaxing along the beach.

Laguna Lookout

Laguna Lookout

Laguna Lookout is located on a small hill in Noosa Heads. It offers an impressive panoramic view of Laguna Bay, Noosa River, Noosa Heads, and the distant Sunshine Coast Hinterland .

You can visit Laguna Lookout at any time of the day, but I highly  recommend visiting Laguna Lookout just before sunset , so you can watch the sky turning into different shades of gold and purple over the beautiful Noosa Heads.

Laguna Lookout can be accessed either by car or by walking. If you have a car, I suggest  driving directly to Laguna Lookout , where you can find free designated car parks nearby.

You can also easily reach Laguna Lookout by walking. It is a roughly  20 minutes walk between Hastings Street and Laguna Lookout (one way) but can be steep in certain sections.

Mary Valley Scenic Drive

The Mary Valley Scenic Drive is a breathtaking journey past verdant farmlands, rolling hills, and stunning macadamia farms.

It’s one of the best ways to explore the rural hinterlands as you take your time.

Mary Valley Scenic Drive, Tourist Stops, Country Map, Tourist Drive 42, Qld

You’ll pass through more Mary Valley Scenic Drive signs and follow the roads as the scenery changes from grazing pastures to the forest. Go left and make your way towards Imbil , one of the town centres in the valley situated on the Yabba Creek banks, on the way to Borumba Dam. While here, take time to enjoy Imbil , home to one of the last few Hoop Forests in the country. It’s a favourite getaway for horse riding and other outdoor activities , including biking and hiking.

Visitors can also opt to take a leisurely ride or walk through the rail trail and Brooloo. Not to be missed is the spectacular timberman’s walk beneath the majestic Jacaranda trees in the town centre as you learn about how timber contributed to the region’s history and economy. The Borumba Dam is just 15 minutes away as you walk through green pastures, and from here, you can spend time water skiing, fishing, or having a meal.

Below the Borumba Dam is a beautiful camping spot, great for visitors who want to spend a night by the water. Make your way back to Imbil, from where you can head up to Kandanga and savour the local produce for lunch. Check out the Railway Bridges for its rich history or explore the Kandanga Canoe Trail point. These stops are followed by Amamoor , and if you head east, you’ll find the Amamoor State Forest . Head back south through the Mary Valley Link Road or Gympie .

With so much to experience, the Mary Valley Scenic Drive gives you a reason to return to this region.

How to Do a Scenic Drive through the Glass House Mountains

Updated August 2023

' src=

Scenic tourist drives can be a bit odd in Queensland. Not that other Australian states don’t have them but on the Sunshine Coast, they may not be particularly scenic. Or touristy. Well, at least not some of the “official” ones.

That said, the region around the dispersed Glass House Mountains National Park lends itself to a relaxing Sunday drive.

I’ve grown quite fond of this part of the Sunshine Coast, and by going for a drive you’ll have the chance to take in some dramatic views of volcanic outcrops, the famed Glass House Mountains.

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS SCENIC DRIVE (#24)

We discovered the scenic views of the Glass House Mountains more or less by accident.

Doing the official Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive (#24) in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland sounds promising, right? But when we first “explored” it a few years ago, it turned out that the tourist route road markers just take you along a fairly well-trafficked road, the Steve Irwin Way .

You’ll see the brown #24 signs all along this road but unfortunately, it’s a drive without much of a view of anything.

There is one point where you can catch a glimpse of Mount Tibrogargan but that still doesn’t quite redeem Tourist Drive 24 in my book.

Over time we discovered some back roads and fantastic views of the rugged volcanic landscape. So here’s my suggestion for taking a scenic drive through the Glass House Mountains.

A SCENIC LOOP AROUND THE SUNSHINE COAST HINTERLAND

The best way is to do a loop, starting either in Beerburrum or Landsborough just off the Bruce Highway. That way, you’ll wind your way past a couple of lookouts, and if you feel a bit more energetic, you could add a short walk or two. Alternatively, stop in one of the small towns for coffee or lunch.

It’s a 40-50km round trip depending on how much exploring you do.

Map of Glass House Mountains scenic drive #24

1. LANDSBOROUGH TO BEERBURRUM

If you’re coming from the Sunshine Coast, make your way to the historic town of Landsborough (just off Steve Irwin Way).

From there, keep going south to Beerburrum . You’re pretty much following Tourist Drive #24 here but it’s not the most picturesque drive. You will glimpse Mount Tibrogargan on your right though as you make your way south.

You could stop at the village of Glass House Mountains and drop into the information centre to pick up a map of the area (it’s quite a neat little visitor centre). Or keep driving and stop by later.

Alternative: If you’re coming from Brisbane, start at Beerburrum, and finish the drive with the Landsborough to Beerburrum stretch.

Jacaranda tree in Glass House Mountains

At Beerburrum, turn off Steve Irwin Way and take Beerburrum Road, which turns into Beerburrum Woodford Road just outside Beerburrum.

If you’re feeling energetic, stop here and climb Mount Beerburrum . It’s about a 1.4 km return uphill hike, and if I recall correctly, has fairly little shade. Great views from the firetower up top though!

2. BEERBURRUM TO LANDSBOROUGH VIA GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS LOOKOUT

From there, turn right onto Old Gympie Road, and then left onto Glass House Woodford Road to reach the Glass House Mountains Lookout .

I have no idea why this spot isn’t on the tourist drive because you get fabulous views of the various volcanic outcrops from here!

Whilst you can’t really see the sun setting from here, I love watching the sunset at this spot as you can get some awesome pink hues hugging Mount Tibrogargan.

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

The road is sealed to the lookout but not beyond, and there isn’t much to discover past the lookout anyway.

There’s also a short walk (800m loop) at the lookout but it’s not particularly exciting. There are virtually no views but if you crave some exercise, go for it.

Or pack a picnic, the lookout is a nice spot to have lunch or cook up some sausages on the public BBQs there.

3. DETOUR LOOP: HIKE IN THE GLASS HOUSE MOUNTAINS

Once you’ve eaten your delicious lunch, make your way back to Old Gympie Road and turn left to head north. From here, you’ve got a few options for doing a little extra loop:

  • Take Marshs Road for some lovely views of Mount Tibrogargan and/or to do the Mount Tibrogargan Circuit walk (3.3km) or the longer Trachyte Circuit (5.6km)
  • Take Coonowrin Road for views of Mount Tibrogargan from further away and to stop back at the village of Glass House Mountains
  • Take Fullertons Road to climb up super popular Mount Ngungun (be aware of the sunrise and sunset crowd)

Once you’ve taken whichever detour you fancy, turn back onto Old Gympie Road. Either take it all the way back to Landsborough, or stop at Lindeman Road to walk up Mount Coochin. I haven’t done that one yet so I’ve got no idea whether it’s nice or a bit of a waste of time.

Glass House Mountains scenic drive

4. SIDE TRIP: MARY CAIRNCROSS RESERVE

If you’ve got time, from Landsborough take the Maleny Landsborough Road up the Sunshine Coast Hinterland hills to admire the views from Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve.

On a clear day, the views of Mount Beerwah and the rest of the Glass House Mountains are really quite impressive.

Sometimes you can even make out Brisbane’s skyline in the far distance. It’s best seen in the early morning or late afternoon.

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

To get to Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, turn left at Mountain View Road once you’ve climbed up the hills or simply follow the signs for Tourist Drive #23. There’s also a really nice sub-tropical rainforest walk (1.75km loop) at the reserve you could do.

Rainforest Walk at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Plus the new education centre is fabulous, and the café offers heaps of delicious treats, many of them gluten-free!

When you’ve explored the Glass House Mountains to your heart’s content, hit David Low Way from Marcoola all the way up to Noosa for some coastal scenery. It’s a lovely drive, and you can stop and climb Mount Coolum or hike around Noosa National Park .

Alternatively, continue on from Mary Cairncross and do the Blackall Range Tourist Drive (#23) . There are some lovely towns, walks and lookouts to explore along the way.

Or if you’re keen to explore the Queensland border region around the Scenic Rim, take a road trip to Queen Mary Falls or a 4WD detour along the Condamine River! It’s gorgeous scenery down there!

Personalised Plates Queensland

From lush rainforest landscapes to windswept coastlines, hinterlands and beyond, there’s no doubt that a road trip is one of the greatest ways to explore the Sunshine Coast.

Armed with a loose itinerary, old-school tunes and the freedom to stop and start whenever you please, road trips are our favourite way to travel. The only firm decision to be made, is which direction you’re going to head. Read on for 15 of the best road trips around the Sunshine Coast. Most of these trips are suitable for a day trip, but some are better suited an overnight weekend stay.

Mary Valley

Live by the beach and craving to go country for the day? A day trip through the Mary Valley should satisfy all your needs for cows, rustic tin sheds, rolling farms, creeks and teeny old towns. Head inland at Beerwah, through Peachester and onto Cannondale. Keep your eyes peeled for any local farm gates, and gather up goods for an impromptu picnic along the way. From there, you’ve got Kandanga Imbil, and Amamoor to explore, so get those wheels a-turning.

Noosa Hinterlands

Affectionately referred to as 'the other hinterlands', the Noosa Hinterlands stretch from Doonan to Eumundi and this scenic region houses more than a few local gems. Some highlights include Mount Cooroora , a hike definitely not for the faint of heart, Berkelouw Books , where you’ll be encouraged to lay back under a towering tree with your latest literary find, and the tranquil Noosa Botanic Gardens , one of the locals’ best-kept secrets. For the foodies among you, the Noosa Hinterlands is basically the result of the Sunshine Coast’s thriving foodie culture moving north. The region’s top restaurants are not to be missed.

Maleny To Mapleton

Surely, you’ve done this drive at least once in your life, but there’s no reason not to do it again, just differently. Once you’ve found your way to Maleny, visited Rosetta Books and hit up some of the best cafes in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, it’s time to hit the road. This is where we mention, there are a few detours. First stop is to take in those Glass House Mountain views and take a stroll through Mary Cairncross Park. After getting your mind blown, keep travelling to Montville. Combining European-style stores selling a variety of hand-crafted goods with natural splendour aplenty, Montville more than deserves its reputation as the creative soul of the region. But instead of hanging about town like you usually do, take a left onto Western Avenue and find your way down to Baroon Pocket Dam. When you're ready to leave, head down to the coast via Mapleton.

Yandina To Eumundi (Along The Back Roads)

Nope, we’re not just going to tell you to go straight up the guts on the Bruce. Where would the ‘scenic’ be in that? Instead, after you’ve wandered the lanes at Yandina Country Markets (yes, they’re open!) and searched all things vintage at Collective Haus , get behind the wheel and turn onto Old Gympie Road which will soon turn into Cooloolabin Road. Then, keep an eye out for the unsealed Buckby Road and chuck a left onto it. Follow this for about eight minutes, before you take another right and head up to Point Glorious Lookout . Once you’ve taken photos in every direction (the view is incredible), jump back on Buckby Road and head north until you get to Eumundi-Kenilworth Road. From here, it’s all systems east until you arrive at Eumundi. Reward yourself with a cold brew at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi .

Glass House Mountains

Despite its name, the official Glass House Mountains Tourist Drive is not-so tourist-friendly. Sure, it’ll take you past the mountains, but in the least scenic way possible. So if you’re looking for a way to explore the mountains from the comfort of your car, ignore the signs and follow our favourite route instead. Start at Beerburrum and head towards the Glass House Mountains lookout for incredible views of Mount Tibrogargan . Hop back onto Old Gympie Road and head north, taking Fullerton’s Road to climb Mount Ngungun and soak in those sky-high views.

Bribie Island

One for the southern end of the coast, if Bribie Island falls within your 50km radius, this is the perfect spot for a day of exploration. The most ‘lived-on’ of the islands within driving distance of the Sunshine Coast, you can go au natural and explore the top half of the island (which isn’t much more than bush and beach) by paddling across the Pumicestone Passage from Caloundra’s Bulcock or Golden Beach. Or, if wining and dining suits you to a tee, head down the Bruce Highway to the Bribie Island turn-off, then before you scoot across the bridge go directly to The Oyster Shed for a golden feed of takeaway fish and chips.

Rainbow Beach

This little beach town on the Cooloola Coast, north of the Sunny Coast, is the gateway to Fraser Island. But there’s so much more to Rainbow Beach than its island neighbour. Head to the infamous Carlo Sandblow —if you’ve seen a photo of a giant sand dune in Queensland, this is probably it—for an involuntary cardio workout. But remember, what goes down must find its way back up, so only tumble down as far as you're willing to climb. Exhausted? Take you and your sandy parts to the Rainbow Beach Hotel for a cold beer on the pub’s sprawling veranda. Four-legged friends are welcome to tag along.

Fraser Island

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

Beach driving is only the beginning when it comes to the many adventures to be had on Fraser Island with a set of (4WD) wheels. Fraser Island is home to the Maheno Shipwreck , the naturally bubbly Champagne Pools , the vibrantly-coloured Pinnacles and the iconic Lake McKenzie, which boasts the same silica sand as Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays. Yep, you heard that right guys: a tropical paradise without those exxy resort fees. Don’t forget to have a cheeky float down Eli Creek, the largest freshwater stream on the east coast of the island and a popular spot for picnics.

Double Island Point

Got a 4WD, or know a friend of a friend who would invite you on their next Sunshine Coast day trip? Well, you’re onto a good thing because, unlike the rest of us road-bound folk, you can take a sandy mission along the beach, from Noosa North Shore to  Double Island Point . Whatever you do, don’t forget your board. If walking is more your thing, embark on the full-day Double Island Point Walk which will reward you with a stunning lagoon at the base of Double Island Point headland.

North Stradbroke Island

If hitting the beach and getting your hike on sounds more like your thing than heading inland, North Stradbroke Island is basically heaven and it’s only a 45-minute drive away from the Sunshine Coast. Highlights of island life include the stunning North Gorge Walk, a 1.2km track that winds around Straddie’s North Gorge Headland and offers spectacular views over the ocean, the tea-stained Brown Lake and Point Lookout, which serves as an excellent spot to watch the yearly humpback whale migration now that winter has finally rolled around. The more adventurous weekend wanderers amongst us might also want to take a shot at sandboarding or go for a bike ride along the crisp white stretches of Straddie’s many beaches. Whatever mode of adventure takes your fancy just make sure that you stop in at the iconic Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel for a beer and parmy to top off your trip.

Lockyer Valley

The Lockyer Valley is probably best known as Australia’s salad bowl—it's home to some of the most fertile soil in Australia—but it also boasts some epic natural beauty and a winery or two well worth the visit. Start your journey with a stop at Cunningham’s Crest Lookout and be treated to breathtaking views across Laidley Plains. Now it’s time to sample the local vino at Preston Peak Winery , which also has some truly stunning views of the valley below so you can marvel while you sip. Finally, head on over to Murphy’s Creek Escape and pitch a tent to watch the sunset over true blue Aussie countryside with a homemade platter in hand. Ah, what a time to be alive.

The “other coast” has grown up over the past few years, ditching its partying ways (or at least toning it down) to make way for an onslaught of super-sleek bars, a flourishing arts scene and world-class restaurants. We don’t even know where to start. So we’d suggest you book a room at the Gold Coast’s best accommodation , dial up the energy at the Gold Coast’s best theme parks and top it all off with a superb meal at a top restaurant .

Yes, we are aware it’s a city. And yes, it will take an hour or two to get there, depending where you are on the Coast. You may call them downsides, but once you’re exploring  Brisbane , you’ll wonder why you got the shakes at the thought of leaving the Coast for a day trip to the big smoke. Take your pick between visiting the latest exhibitions at  GOMA , shopping at  Queen Street Mall  and exploring the stunning  Botanic Gardens .

Any list of road trips near the Sunshine Coast wouldn’t be complete without a mention of the Scenic Rim. This massive area covers everything from lush rainforests to waterfalls worth chasing and eco-glamping escapes. Start with a romp through gorgeous Lamington National Park to set the tone for the rest of the trip, before heading on over to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards for a mouth-watering lunch with panoramic views. Next, hop on over to Tamborine Mountain to indulge your spiritual side with a shopping spree amongst many of the town’s bohemian shops and cafes. Finally, make your way to Ketchup’s Bank Glamping , via quaint Boonah, for a back-to-your-roots candlelit dinner while you watch the sunset over rolling plains—all from the private sanctuary of your very own safari-tent-glamping-heaven.

Hardly a secret, Bangalow is the Byron Shire town everybody wants a piece of. And who could blame them? If your ideal weekend is made of browsing boutiques packed with stunning homewares and sipping tea at cute cafés that sprawl onto footpaths, then pass everywhere until you see the off-ramp with this town’s name on it. Hitlist for your spending pleasure: for stunning home necessities try Our Corner Store , for threads hit Island Luxe , and for a photo-worthy morning or organic lunch, you can’t beat Woods .

Forest bathing. It's a thing. The practice originated in Japan where it is called "shinrin-yoku" and is embraced by those seeking to de-stress by connecting with the naturally rejuvenating power of nature. The Sunshine Coast Hinterland has a myriad of places for 'forest bathing' - and the bushland areas are packed full of idyllic scenic spots to relax and enjoy a picnic.

Glass House Mountains National Park

The  Glass House Mountains  were named by Captain Cook as he mapped the Queensland coast in 1770. The “Glass Houses” are distinctive volcanic plugs that rise abruptly from the surrounding countryside. These 20 million year-old monoliths are part of the Aboriginal ‘songlines’ navigational landmarks once used by Aborigines to find their way and are a prominent feature of local Aboriginal legend. Let the awe-inspiring landscape wash over you as you take a leisurely drive through the  Glass House Mountains National Park , stopping at picturesque lookouts along the way, or get your blood pumping with some hiking, rock climbing or abseiling on an adventure tour with the team from Experientia. Make some time to visit the Glass House Mountains Lookout where you'll enjoy panoramic views of the mountains as they tower over a scenic patchwork of national parks, plantations and cultivated farmland. Kondalilla National Park

A refuge for many species of native animals and plants,  Kondalilla National Park  is a magnet for birdwatchers and nature photographers as well as bushwalkers. With a stunning waterfall that drops 90 metres into a rainforest valley, rocky pools and freshwater creeks - is it clear why the park gets its name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'rushing waters'. Five rare and threatened frog species - as well as the Bopple Nut, a rare macadamia species - can be found in the park. There is a wonderful day-use area which is ideal for picnics and can be reached on an easy 1.7 kilometre circuit track. For more of a challenge, tackle the 300 stairs on the 4.6 kilometre  Kondalilla Falls Circuit  or explore the Kondalilla leg of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk which winds its way through this park on the way to Lake Baroon, Mapleton and Gheerulla. Conondale National Park

Conondale National Park  forms the heart of an extensive area of unspoilt mountain scenery in the Conondale Range. With magnificent forests, deep gorges and spectacular views, this park and the adjacent state forest offer scenic drives, picnic areas and a choice of four grassy camp sites that sit alongside native rainforests and cool mountain streams. Walks range from a short stroll beside crystal clear creeks, to challenging hikes including to a hike to the Mount Allan fire tower or a trek along the four-day 56 kilometre Conondale Range Great Walk. It is a picturesque and ecologically important area, protecting the habitats of many rare and threatened animals, including several species of frogs and the seldom-seen Yellow-Bellied Glider. Access is via gravel roads suitable for conventional vehicles with care. In wet weather, roads may be closed. The scenic drive that starts on Booloumba Creek Road and travels through the Kenilworth Forest Reserve, has several creek crossings that are only accessible by high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles. Allow at least 90 minutes for the scenic drive and extra time for picnics and bushwalks. Birdwatchers will enjoy Little Yabba Creek, while mountain bike and horse riders can explore the park and forest along vehicle tracks. And for the real adventurers, take the Booloumba Creek turn-off and head to Booloumba Falls for a swim in the hidden rock pools. Conondale National Park Conondale, 4552 Free Call: +61 13 74 68

Mapleton Falls National Park

Mapleton Falls National Park  marks the point just west of  Mapleton  where Pencil Creek spectacularly cascades 120 metres over an escarpment into the rock pools below. This small, day-use-only park shelters many bird species, including the Peregrine Falcon, Eastern Whipbird and Wompoo Fruit Dove. From the carpark, enjoy a short walk to Mapleton Falls Lookout which has wheelchair access. This viewing platform, high above the Obi Obi Gorge and  Mary River Valley , takes in endless views of luxuriant green rainforests, piccabeen groves and the very top of Mapleton Falls. Look for Peregrine Falcons soaring above - in early spring they roost on the edges of the falls. From the open, grassy picnic area, the Wompoo Circuit winds through eucalypts and rainforest. Listen for the Fruit Dove’s booming calls, 'wallock-a-woo' and 'book-a-roo'. Near the causeway pool, listen for frogs and marvel at the distinctive hexagonal volcanic rocks.

UniSC researcher embarking on epic Arctic adventure

UniSC News  |  29 Apr 2024

University of the Sunshine Coast engineering academic Dr Adrian McCallum is about to embark on a 580km scientific expedition into the Arctic Circle – on foot.

There’ll be no snowmobiles, no helicopters and no support.

Just him and four other intrepid adventurers, on skis, dragging almost 100kg of survival gear and scientific equipment across the Greenland ice sheet.

Dr McCallum says he has two jobs on The Greenland Project.

“The most important job is keeping everyone alive,” he says.

“We’ve got a great team but ironically, despite being the only Australian in the group, I’m also the one with the most polar experience so I’ll be lending my expertise there.

“I’m also in charge of conducting the science, focusing mainly on measuring variations in Greenland’s surface snow density. This information is crucial to accurately assessing the mass of the Greenland ice sheet, which in turn is essential to monitoring changes and the impact on sea levels.”

Dr McCallum has extensive experience conducting research in cold, remote locations like the Arctic, the Himalayas and Antarctica, both as a scientist and as a former member of the Australian Defence Force.

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

Dr McCallum as part of the Catlin Arctic Survey expedition in 2010.

But he spends the majority of his time living and working in the heat and humidity of South-East Queensland, teaching and running the engineering program at UniSC.

So when it comes to training for a month-long polar trek, Dr McCallum has had to improvise.

“The other members of the expedition have been preparing and training in freezing winter conditions in Europe. I’ve been dragging tyres up and down the hinterland all summer," Dr McCallum says.

“I’ll be fit enough. But it does mean I’m going to be really feeling the cold when I’m over there.”

sunshine coast hinterland tourist drive

Dr McCallum trained for his latest expedition by dragging tyres around the hills of Maleny.

The remoteness of the location, means its snow and ice data is seldom collected.

So why travel by foot then - in an age of helicopters, snowmobiles and drones?

The Greenland Project leader, Jan Rasmussen, says it’s about re-establishing the viability and importance of low-impact exploration and scientific endeavour.

“Traditionally, scientific expeditions are huge inaccessible and emissions-heavy undertakings, while adventures are associated with environmental costs and ego,” Mr Rasmussen says.

“I believe that we, through human-powered travel and meaningful engagement, can combine the two in earth-friendly ways that make critical science digestible for everyone.”

For Dr McCallum, it’s also an opportunity as an educator to inspire his students back in Australia and show them the incredible avenues science can take them.

“It doesn’t just happen in a lab. I’m hoping to one day take students on a future trip to Greenland to conduct research of their own,” said he says.
