Quick walkthrough [ ]

Detailed walkthrough [ ].

Speak with Father about the Institute , he will request help dealing with a renegade synth turned raider at Libertalia . There will be a courser companion at Nahant Wharf or the shore northeast of Nordhagen Beach , depending on from which direction the player comes, who needs to be collected first. Once he is collected, fight along with the network of ships until the target is reached. Upon entering the cabin, the courser companion, X6-88 will initiate a conversation and provide Gabriel 's recall code.

On reaching the top of the ship Gabriel will initiate conversation, and no matter what, a fight will break out. Using the synth's factory reset code will disable Gabriel and keep the fight limited to a few raiders. There are a couple of persuasion checks that give extra choices like the password for the Master locked terminal that can open a nearby safe. Once the fight is over, X6-88 will teleport out with Gabriel.

The player character can kill Gabriel, much to X6-88's dismay. This will also trigger different dialogues from many of the Institute scientists and Father. Upon returning to the Institute there will be another discussion with Father, and he will provide quarters for the Sole Survivor . Upon entering them, the mission is complete, and the Battle of Bunker Hill begins.

Quest stages [ ]

Companion reactions [ ].

  • When meeting up with X6-88, he may be under attack from a Brotherhood of Steel team and a Vertibird . The Brotherhood members will not be hostile to the Sole Survivor unless they are already an enemy of the Brotherhood of Steel. Since X6-88 is essential, he cannot lose the fight but will continue to fight ad infinitum. If this happens, proceed to Gabriel: X6-88 will teleport to the Sole Survivor upon entering the captain's cabin at the top of the ship, and the quest will progress from there. Alternatively use a chair inside Nahant Sherrif's Department to fast forward time for the fight to end.
  • There appears to be a disconnection between the affinity changes generated and the actually spoken responses, for many of the companions. For example, Nick Valentine "loves" saying it would be more humane to kill Gabriel than use the recall code, but states "I think you and I got real different definitions of 'humane'" which implies he should not like this choice. Further along, Danse "hates" refusing Gabriel's bribe or electing to take his loot by force, yet his spoken responses are "A wise choice, soldier," and "This is going to be a pleasure," respectively. Additionally, Curie dislikes reclaiming B5-92, yet she comments when asked that he "deserves this fate."
  • It is possible to clear the area without the help of X6-88. To do so, simply do not speak to him and proceed to the cabin on top of the ship. The quest will proceed normally once inside the cabin interior.

PC

  • This can be fixed by fast-traveling back to Libertalia, locating X6-88 (he will mostly at all times be located at a small boat directly between Libertalia and Nordhagen Beach ), and begin shooting him. After he takes some damage, the game will prompt the quest as completed.
  • This can be fixed by simply entering the captain's quarters at Libertalia, progressing the quest and moving X6-88.
  • [Platforms needed] If you visit your quarters and the quest doesn't complete, then travel back to Libertalia where the rogue synth was. The quest will then end and the next quest will begin. See here . [verification needed]

Synth retention.

The mission Synth Retention is part of the Fallout 4 main scenario quests , and is part of IGN's main Walkthrough .

This quest begins immediately after finish Institutionalized .

Go speak with Father, and he will tell you about a Synth that has gone rogue. Your first goal is to meet up with the Courser who has also been sent to deal with the problem, so head to it's location just north of Libertalia , which is on the East side of the map .

When you get there, it's possible you'll find him already deep in combat, seems those Coursers don't like waiting around. Speak with him, and tell him you're ready to go to begin attacking the Raider camp.

The rest of the mission is a sweep and clear. Make your way through the area, killing Raiders and collecting loot. When you go through the door that leads to the Captains Cabin, make sure to grab the shotgun directly in front of you, as it's a legendary one named Le Fusil Terribles .

Just to the right around the corner of that is a trap door in the ceiling. Go through, and you will be face to face with the rogue. When you entered the cabin, the other Courser gave you a code to shut the rogue down, so you can use that here, or simply kill him and his companions . Whatever your choice, when it's all done, make sure to loot the area, then head back to Father.

After you speak to him, he tells you that a room was prepared for you, so go check it out. Once you do, this quest ends, and The Battle of Bunker Hill begins.

Fallout 4: Synth Retention - Libertalia, Reclaim the Synth

Help X6-88 track down a rogue synth in Libertalia.

This guide will show you how to complete the Institute Quest: Synth Retention in Fallout 4. Players must first complete the Main Quest: Institutionalized in order to gain access to the Institute faction quests. Complete each objective in this guide to aid Father with a particular Synth problem.

Keep in mind that fulfilling quests for the Institute can negatively affect your relationship with the other three factions, and will eventually impact the final events of the game. Check out our guide on selecting the best faction in Fallout 4 to decide which faction you’d ultimately like to support.

Talk to Father

After completing the Main Quest: Institutionalized , return to the Institute using your Pip-boy relay, and speak with Father in his quarters. Father asks you to locate and retrieve a rogue synth who has settled in with a group of raiders in Libertalia.

Meet Up with the Courser

Libertalia is found along the coast of a peninsula on the far east side of the map. The closest fast-travel point is the Nahant Township. If you haven’t journeyed this far east yet, then you’ll have to travel part of the way on foot. Fast-travel from the Institute to the Nahant Sheriff's Department near the Nahant Wharf, where Father has arranged to have a Courser meet up with you.

Reclaim the Rogue Synth

When you arrive at Nahant Wharf, a skilled Courser named X6-88 will be waiting for you, and has already taken care of the guards. Head toward the target location in the Raider camp, eliminating the hostile Raiders stationed throughout the pier. Watch out for a few defensive turrets along the path as well.

Continue along the wooden plank walkway until you reach the large partially-sunken tanker ship. Gabriel is found at the top of the makeshift tower built along the side of the ship. Locate a small wooden platform with a red button near the trash boat. Stand on the platform and press the button to ride the platform to the sunken ship.

Be prepared to gun down another set of Raiders as you board the ship. Continue up the tower to reach the captain’s shack. Just before arriving at the top, X6-88 tells you the reset code for the synth. Talk to Gabriel, and choose whether or not to say the reset code. Afterward, eliminate his two Raider bodyguards, and prepare to head back to the Institute.

Return to Father

Saying the reset code to Gabriel will temporarily immobilize him, allowing X6-88 to relay him back to the Institute. Be sure to loot the area thoroughly before you leave. There are some valuable goodies to be found in Gabriel’s quarters, including the Le Fusil Terribles shotgun, and a copy of the U.S. Covert Operations Manual . When ready, fast-travel back to the Institute and speak with Father once more.

Visit your Quarters

Father is pleased with your work. To show his gratitude for a job well done, Father has arranged for you to have your own personal quarters within the Institute, equipped with new gear and other useful items. Go to your room, and speak with X6-88 to get situated.

synth retention stuck on visit your quarters

It took me forever to find it but there is a hatch to get to the top of the captains room on the ceiling

Okay, so whenever I go in to my quarters, the quest marker just stays there. So basically, I can't finish the quest. I read that if you go back to Libertalia and talk to X6-88, it will work. But I can't find him. And yes, I saw him teleport away. Help?

okay, I've tried everything and cannot get passed the visit your quarters glitch. I've gone back to Libertalia and killed everybody including turrets that I could find and still cannot complete the mission when I enter the my quarters. Is there any other way around this glitch???

So father says he put supplies and weapons in my personal quarters...but all I see is the same crappy ***** that's in any standard room. Am I missing something or is my son a cheap ungrateful bastard who never learned any respect?

is my loot safe to be stored there

Synth Retention is a quest that can be obtained in the Commonwealth in Fallout 4 .

  • 2 Walkthrough
  • 3 Quest stages
  • 4 Notable loot

Synopsis [ ]

Having infiltrated the mysterious and illusive Institute , the Sole Survivor will finally be given the chance to learn more about this faction, its leaders, and ultimately, their goals.

Walkthrough [ ]

  • Speaking with Father, it is revealed that a rogue synth had undergone a memory wipe, instigated by The Railroad , and has now begun terrorizing the Commonwealth in his new personality, as a ruthless raider leader in command of the raider town of Libertalia .
  • Upon arrival at the Nahant township, the Sole Survivor will need to team up with an Institute courser under the designation X6-88 , the same courser seen in Kellogg's memories, who will help cleanse the raider town of all life.
  • After making it onto the upturned cruise ship (beware the raider utilizing a Fat Man , who is overseeing the elevator leading up onto the ship), serving as the town's command center, the party will need to fight their way upwards, until finally reaching the captain, the rogue synth, Gabriel , and two raider lieutenants.
  • Just before entering the area where the rogue synth presides, X6-88 will reveal to the Sole Survivor that Gabriel can be taken down peacefully by speaking his code phrase. Regardless of whether the code phrase is used in the next area, Gabriel will be knocked unconscious, and X6-88 will thank the Sole Survivor before teleporting back to the Institute with Gabriel.
  • Return to the Institute, and speak with Father, who will then grant the Sole Survivor their own personal quarters within the Institute.

Quest stages [ ]

Notable loot [ ].

  • A copy of a U.S. Covert Operations Manual can be found in the raider town.
  • In the captain's quarters of Libertaria, a unique shotgun called the Le Fusil Terribles can be obtained.
