Windstar 7-Day Tahiti Cruise: What To Expect

Originally published on Ordinary Traveler: Windstar 7-Day Tahiti Cruise

Embarking on a Windstar 7-day Tahiti Cruise is not just a journey; it's a seamless exploration of paradise. Join me as I unravel the intricacies of reaching French Polynesia and delve into the wonders that await aboard the Star Breeze.

What I Loved About This Cruise

Here are some highlights that make this 7-day Dreams of Tahiti cruise with Windstar exceptional:

• The small ship's ability to anchor at islands and hidden lagoons inaccessible to larger vessels.

• No scheduled sea days, maximizing time for island exploration.

• Each island on the itinerary offers a distinct experience.

• The inclusion of 2 days in Bora Bora provides an excellent opportunity for those with overwater bungalows on their bucket list to effortlessly enhance their trip by staying on the island.

• Complimentary access to water toys and a trampoline, easily accessible from the ship's rear water sports platform.

• Nearly everything is included from espresso and soft drinks to specialty restaurants. This is not the case with many other cruise lines.

• The Star Breeze is an all-suite yacht so every cabin has at least 277 square feet of comfort.

• The crew, representing over 30 nationalities, were exceptional. From our cabin attendant to the Yacht Club barista, they played a significant role in making our trip truly special.

Getting There: The First Leg Of The Adventure

My adventure kicked off with a hassle-free journey from LAX to PPT with Delta Airlines. Strategically opting for a departure time of 10:30 am and arrival at 5:30 pm in Papeete meant we were able to avoid the red-eye fatigue.

Pro tip: Grant yourself an extra day pre-cruise to recover from the flight. Upon landing, a quick $30 USD taxi ride (Uber is not available) will take you to most hotels near the airport and ferry terminal. (I booked this hotel , which provided a free airport shuttle.)

When arranging your Windstar Cruise, I also recommend exploring their packages that include airfare, hotel, and transfers for a seamless experience. Visit my dedicated Windstar page to inquire directly with Windstar or feel free to contact me via email for a personalized booking experience, leveraging my expertise as a licensed travel advisor.

Things To Know Before You Visit French Polynesia

  • Currency: While the US Dollar is widely accepted, I'd suggest withdrawing local currency (XPF) from the airport ATM for the best exchange rate.
  • Cash: In popular spots like Moorea, Bora Bora, and Tahiti, credit cards suffice, but keep some cash handy for smaller islands, tours, and local transactions like taxis or buses. The more budget-friendly restaurants tend to be cash only, so it’s always a good idea to have cash available.
  • Sunscreen: Pack more sunscreen than you think you will need! We ended up using much more sunscreen than we expected, and it wasn't convenient or economical to find it in local stores.
  • Shopping: While Windstar does offer a boutique store onboard with items like aloe, sunscreen, and UV protection swimwear , I recommend bringing your own rashguard and preferred brand of sunblock. That being said, I did have to purchase another bottle (I love that they stocked reef safe sunscreen reef safe sunscreen !) at the shop onboard Windstar and their prices were definitely more favorable compared to local shops, which was greatly appreciated.
  • Day Passes: Given that most flights from Papeete depart late at night, navigating the gap between disembarkation and your flight requires some planning. Numerous hotels extend day passes, providing a secure space to store your luggage and access their amenities. Personally, I opted for a day room at this hotel (inclusive of a free airport shuttle), costing around $100 USD -- a more budget-friendly choice compared to a day pass at a resort. This way, we had a comfortable place to unwind before our departure.

Windstar Tahiti Cruise Review

The star breeze ship: a floating paradise.

Rated the best small cruise ship by Conde Nast, the Star Breeze has a capacity of 312 guests and feels more like a luxury yacht, than a conventional ship.

This all-suite cabined ship is equipped with a watersports platform where stand up paddleboards and kayaks are available to peruse the deep waters adjacent to anchorage. A multi-person trampoline sits on water for jumpers and sunbathers to enjoy the ease of floating enjoyment.

The two whirlpools are positioned on the bow and mid ship, accompanied with one neighboring pool to cool off and sip ice-cold beverages. If you feel you are getting too much sun, there’s the Star Boutique one floor down to purchase UV protection swimwear, hats and sunscreen.

When your time is up tanning, enjoy the world-class spa for deep tissue pampering and a variety of glamorous beauty treatments. For those who want to build up a sweat without the sun, there’s the hot bed and steam rooms available throughout the day with no appointment necessary.

Last but not least, the gym offers over a dozen workout machines, free weights and yoga room to complete your tailored exercise routine for the day.

[wp-svg-icons icon="info-2" wrap="b" color="#2fc9bd"] Read more: South Pacific Cruise Packing List

Exploring the ship’s multiple decks, you will find five restaurants and one cafe with a variety of settings and eclectic cuisine. For the early birds, ascend to the bow views at the Yacht club on deck 8 for morning coffee, tea and smoothies while you experience epic sunrise photo opportunities. Offering fresh European style pastries, charcuterie and afternoon small bites, this cafe is tailored with communal literature and games with comfortable cafe seating.

Veranda, on deck 7, offers both indoor and patio seating with breakfast and lunch menus with aft views of the ship. On the bow side, the Star Grill contains the Star Grill with a luxurious barbeque style atmosphere where you can enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet style or served to your table.

After dark, dine in the 5 star caliber restaurants of Amphora, Candles and Cuadro 44 to embark on exquisite cuisine by James Beard foundation chefs and the 10-time Michelin-star awarded chef, Anthony Sasso. Sit back, relax and experience the pleasures of fine dining service, wine pairing perfection, expert cocktail creations and zero proof alcohol mocktails.

French Polynesia Itinerary

Boarding commences at 1 pm, and the ship sets sail from Papeete around 6 pm. The check-in process was swift and easy, taking only about 30 minutes in total. With a capacity of 312 guests, the Star Breeze ensures a streamlined experience without the extended lines typical of larger cruise lines.

Once you've settled in and unpacked, I recommend acquainting yourself with the ship and collecting your snorkel mask and fins from the watersports deck. This set will be yours to use throughout the entire voyage.

To enhance your cruise experience, access their portal on your phone, offering details such as restaurant menus, shore excursion information, onboard account details, and much more.

The ship's specialty restaurants require reservations, and I recommend booking these well in advance to ensure you secure your preferred days and times.

What’s not to love about Moorea? This was my second visit to this picturesque island and, undoubtedly, it won’t be my last!

The Star Breeze docks in the stunning Cooks Bay, which has no shortage of photo opportunities. My recommendations for your day in Moorea are to book a snorkel tour or visit one of the local public beaches and bring your snorkel gear (or if you are visiting during whale season, I highly recommend booking a whale and dolphin watching tour !).

Taxis are conveniently accessible right at port, and you can hire one for approximately $20-30 USD to reach one of the nearby beaches.

Windstar also offers various land tours, one of which is a photographer’s perspective of Moorea, offering a glimpse into the diverse landscapes of the island.

Raiatea, often hailed as the "sacred island," has a unique blend of exhilarating activities and cultural experiences. For a little something out of the ordinary, local tour operators offer a horseback riding adventure that incorporates a swim in the ocean. For a more serene exploration, I recommend taking one Windstar's excursions along the Faaroa River, distinguished as the sole navigable river in all of French Polynesia.

Just steps from the dock in Uturoa, the second-largest city in Polynesia, you'll find a wealth of shopping opportunities and charming cafes reminiscent of those found in France.

We personally needed some downtime, so we spent the morning shopping in town and treated ourselves to a leisurely afternoon with room service in our suite. In hindsight, I wish we had booked an excursion here because I had a little bit of FOMO after seeing everyone's photos and hearing about their experiences on this island.

Motu Mahaea (Taha'a)

This particular destination was one I had eagerly anticipated. Not only have I heard great things about the island of Taha'a, Windstar had crafted an exclusive day for us on a private island called Motu Mahaea.

What is a motu, you ask? A motu is a reef islet formed by broken coral and sand surrounding an atoll. This particular islet is covered with stunning white sand and surrounded by a crystal clear turquoise lagoon.

Windstar transported us to the motu in cozy zodiacs, offering a day filled with sunshine, watersports, and a delicious barbeque lunch, all while our ship anchored close by. Thankfully, after the strenuous task of lounging on our private island, we were effortlessly shuttled back to our yacht for the evening's festivities.

[wp-svg-icons icon="info-2" wrap="b" color="#2fc9bd"] Read more: How to Pack for a Sailing Trip

With two days anchored in Bora Bora, there's plenty of time to explore this gorgeous island and lagoon. First, I recommend taking the local bus ($5 US per person) to Matira Beach which is widely known as the prettiest public beach in Bora Bora.

For those stunning views of Mount Otemanu and to see the best sea life, book a lagoon tour with Windstar. We booked Windstar's half day shared boat snorkeling excursion, which brought us to four different snorkel spots where we swam with eagle rays and manta rays!

I have always dreamed of spending the night in an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora, so we took this opportunity to plan a stay at the Four Seasons Bora Bora ! Their concierge set up a taxi to meet us at the port for a quick 20-minute drive and another 5-minute boat shuttle to the resort.

We spent the most dreamy 24 hours at the resort for memories that will last a lifetime. If you have the opportunity to incorporate this into your Windstar journey, it's a decision you won't regret! Stay tuned for a comprehensive blog post capturing our entire experience, and feel free to contact me with any questions about the logistics of adding this to your trip.

Huahine has left an indelible impression on every traveler fortunate enough to visit. Once the abode of Tahitian royalty, this island holds the highest concentration of ancient marae (temples) in French Polynesia, some believed to trace back to the Tahitians' original ancestors.

The name Huahine, derived from the Tahitian word "vahine" (woman), likely alludes to a mountain ridge mirroring the silhouette of a pregnant woman -- a powerful symbol of the island's undeniable fertility.

The water clarity here rivals that of Moorea and Bora Bora, yet the island exudes a more unhurried ambiance with fewer tourists. The tranquility and serenity of Huahine served as the ideal ending to our Windstar journey.

Opting for a snorkel excursion with Windstar, we spent two hours snorkeling alongside friendly, vibrant fish. Our guide then led us to another captivating spot on the island, where the beach felt like stepping into another world.

Navigating The Details

I was surprised at the affordability of this cruise and, overall, I have found a Windstar cruise to be the best way to explore French Polynesia. With this itinerary, I visited 6 different islands in 7 days (they also offer an extended 11-day option). Attempting to visit even half of these islands independently would have entailed substantial planning and significantly higher expenses.

Diving into the specifics, the cost of a Windstar Dreams of Tahiti cruise starts at $2100 per person, however, I highly recommend exploring their packages, which incorporate airfare, transfers, hotel accommodations, as well as alcoholic beverages, wifi and gratuities.

Keep in mind that their base fare goes beyond room and board. It includes all meals, dining at specialty restaurants, 24-hour room service, non-alcoholic beverages, complimentary water sports equipment, and snorkel gear.

The price range for their port excursions typically falls between $99 and $259 per person and you won't find these much cheaper by going through a local tour operator.

Embarking on two consecutive cruises in French Polynesia with Windstar has equipped me with valuable insights. If you have any questions about this voyage or need assistance in planning your dream trip, feel free to reach out to me . I'm here to help!

Relaxing time at the Lagoonarium

$$: the excursion price is between $50 and $100.

Relaxing time at the Lagoonarium

Depart the pier in Vaitape (or Anau) aboard an outrigger canoe for a scenic ride in the Bora Bora lagoon (weather permitting). You will then continue to the Lagoonarium , with its white sandy beach and open-air aquarium. From the beach you will have a magnificent view of the island of Bora Bora. Upon arrival, enjoy an opportunity to swim in separate enclosed areas. During your visit, you will also participate in up-close encounters with marine life , including sharks, rays, jack fish, turtles, parrot fish, and more. Snorkeling begins from the beach in shallow water ranging in depth from 3-10 feet and is suitable for beginners and experienced snorkelers. Your local guides will show you how to carefully approach the marine life, will present you the motu and you will invite to participate in weaving coconut palm, sheathing coconut and pareo demonstrations.

After your visit, you will be served fresh fruit and spend some time relaxing on the beach before heading back to the pier.

Because the outrigger canoes are not always uncovered, the ride can be extremely sunny or wet from spray or rain. At times transfer is by car and boat. Guests exiting the canoe must use the ladder on the south side and walk in shallow water back to the beach. A small souvenir shop is available on the island, and all purchases are cash only; U.S. dollars or Pacific Francs are accepted here. Changing facilities, a sitting area and basic rest room are also available. Wear reef shoes and a swimsuit under a cover-up, and bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a towel from the ship. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition. Despite the fact the marine life is widely represented, it is not guaranteed to spot an animal presence when going out. If this is the case, the excursion will not be reimbursed.

Tahiti - The ultimate cruise guide

No one knows Tahiti better than our team at FAB. I have personally been visiting Tahiti for over 40 years. My career with the airlines and as a VIP host on high-end cruise ships has taken me all around the world, and to most of the island chains in the Pacific. Tahiti is the most beautiful and sublime place on earth. So much so that I chose to celebrate my 50th birthday there. I

tahiti 7 day cruise

Why is it so special?

Other pacific islands have similar volcanic peaks as Tahiti, by no other chain has the blue lagoons that ring all her main islands. This makes for the most spectacular images in tourism, but the shallow lagoons create the perfect environment for snorkeling and watersports but have also permitted the construction of their iconic overwater bungalows.

Weather - the best time to visit

Outside the wet season between November and February, Tahiti is blessed with the most amazing weather, very similar to Hawaii. This is a place you will want to be in the water each and every day. It is therefore a perfect family holiday for those who like active holidays. Alternatively, if you dream of sitting under a palm tree for a week drinking fluffy cocktails, this is also the perfect holiday for you.

Getting there and back

There used to be weekly direct flights from Australia, but these have not yet resumed. Most people from Australia fly into Auckland, of which there are a lot of cheap options, and then out to Papeete on either Air Tahiti Nui or Air New Zealand. Because most of these flights involve crossing the date line, if you leave Australia on Monday morning, you will actually arrive in Tahiti Sunday night. You really don't need to plan for too much time in Tahiti before your cruise, as the most scenic places you will; visit on the cruise. Papeete is a bit like a run-down pirate town, not unlike Suva in Fiji. If time is tight you can easily plan for just a day or two prior to the cruise and then fly back home on the last day. But the date line will see you lose a day on the return journey. You could easily do a 7 day cruise with 10 to 11 days of leave.

tahiti 7 day cruise

One of the most expensive places on earth

The very things that make it so special, its remoteness being smack bang in the middle of the Pacific - also make it insanely expensive. Overwater bungalows routinely sell for over $2500 USD per night, without taxes, any food, alcohol, or entertainment. As the individual resorts are usually not connected to the main islands guest are captive of the hotels that charge at a rate similar to the accommodation fees.

Therefore unless you can afford to blow $20/30,000+ on a 7-day stay, Tahiti is beyond the reach of most of us, which is such a shame as it really should be on everyone's bucket list.

But we have a solution, that will let you enjoy the best that Tahiti has to offer, at a fraction of that price, and that of course is a cruise. And there are two ways to cruise Tahiti.

1/ Include Tahiti on a transpacific voyage between Hawaii and Australia. These run every ex Australia in March/April and around October in the reverse direction. All the main brands offer these most years. They used to be extremely cheap, but as Australians have not become savvy cruisers these routinely sell out, so last-minute deals are to come across. The best way to secure discounts on these is to book two to three years in advance.

2/ Fly into Tahiti for a 7-day cruise that will visit all the main islands. This to me is much preferable to being landlocked in an overwater bungalow where you don't get to see all the other islands.

tahiti 7 day cruise

There are two operators that run almost identical itineraries that repeat each week. they are:

Paul Gauguin Cruises. These are uber boutique as they only have one ship and sails exclusively around Tahiti year-round.

Windstar is another very small brand with only 5 ships, and they too base one of their ships year-round in Tahiti.

tahiti 7 day cruise

Every month or so they will offer longer 10 or 12-day voyages to the outer Marquesas, and lately even the Cook Islands. These will obviously be more expensive but as you have had to fly so far to get there if you have the time and money, you really should consider this option. If you don't go while in Tahiti, the chances are high that you will never be able to get back there.

Paul Gauguin Cruises - 6 Star

Paul Gauguin is a small and intimate ship with only 330 passengers and 215 crew. The line was recently purchased by Ponant, who has given her a multimillion-dollar makeover, which is not reflected in the video above. She was always gorgeous but now she looks and feels like a Noosa beach house.

PGC is all-inclusive and after the Ponant purchase now includes free-flow Charles Heidsieck champagne. Specialty dining, which features a French degustation restaurant is all included in the fare.

There is an incredible aft water sports marina that is tailor-made for the exotic lagoons of Bora Bora. PGC include a beach BBQ and a day at their private Muto (island).

The lead-in cabins have port holes, and on upper decks are traditional balconies.

Windstar - 5.5 star

tahiti 7 day cruise

Windstar has an even small ship based in Tahiti, Wind Spirit that only has 150 passengers. this is a true sailing yacht, which is incredibly romantic and perfectly suited to this region. Being a functioning sailing vessel the cabin footprints are smaller, there are only port-hole cabins and no balconies. But again, this is Tahiti, I can guarantee you will never be in your cabin.

Windstar has invested heavily in refurbishing its entire fleet, product, and service improvements. They are absolutely sensational and are really almost at the 6 star level, but with a much more relaxed vibe.

The video below is on a slightly larger Windstar ship Star Breeze which is not based in Tahiti year-round.

View our Windstar Tahiti Album featuring Star Breeze.

Star Breeze has been venturing down to Australia over recent seasons so she is usually in Tahiti in late October and March. She carries 330 passengers and has been refurbished which, is not reflected in this video, however, the level of service and vibe is very similar across the fleet, The smaller Spirit obviously has reduced dining and entertainment options, but again, you are in TAHITI.

Windstar has three of these larger ships in its fleet. They were originally built for 6 Star Seabourn and they still feature many Seabourn signatures such as being an all-suite ship with seperate sitting areas, marble bathrooms and walk in robes, as shown in the images below. Their non sailing vessels also offer french balconies - but these are not wide enough to sit on.

Tahiti - highlights

A day on a private Muto - a feature of both PGC and Windstar itineraries.

Main Island - Day trip circumnavigation.

I have a great day trip I am happy to share with clients that take you all around the main islands with swims at deserted black volcanic sand beaches, Teahupo'o the home of the biggest surf break in the world, lunch at a restaurant with a sand floor, on the beach, mountain outlooks, waterfalls you can swim in, vanilla farms and ending at Venus Bay where history was made both by Captain Cook and Willaim Bligh of the Bounty mutiny.

Accommodation

Tahiti has a range of affordable accommodation options such as Airbnbs. These can be very basic but can help if your budget is tight and from as low as $150 per night. Slightly more will get you a basic shack close to the beach,

There are one or two hotels I recommend that are not overly expensive. if we are saving money we will choose a garden room, rather than a pool or ocean view, but still, get to enjoy the gorgeous waterfront pools.

There are only one or two resorts that have a limited number of overwater bungalows. Most of these are located on distant Bora Bora or Moorea, which is closer.

The main island of Tahiti, which is also called Tahiti, is where the airport is located, and cruises depart. The airport is only 15 minutes from town and you want to choose accommodation on this side of the island or downtown in Papeete as taxis are expensive.

Three or four-day extension.

If you have the time I'd suggest that you head across the evocative Bay of Moons to Moorea where there are a lot more over-water bungalow options, some of the most affordable in Tahiti. It is a quick one-hour ferry ride, and as the ferry return to the main cruise pier, you can easily step off the ferry on your return and walk straight onto your ship.

tahiti 7 day cruise

Again if money is tight book a garden room but you will still be able to enjoy the lagoon pool and view of the bungalows even if you can't afford to touch them.

Pricing and how to bag the biggest discounts

Tahiti, as stated, is one of the most expensive places on the planet and consequently, fares are priced accordingly. Paul Gauguin fares usually start at $6000 and rise up to $12000 USD per person for a balcony. Windstar are 'generally' slightly lower than this but they can be priced over $20,000 per person at full rack rate.

However, being a remote location they have trouble selling unsold cabins at the last minute. If you are strategic and take our advice we can secure you discounts of many thousands of dollars.

March, early April, and October are traditionally the months we see the biggest drop in prices. There will be the odd months through the year when they may also offer the odd voyage at significant discounts. Ask us for our predictions if you have a target month.

For those that are in a position and ready to travel in March, we expect to see heavy discounting in early January through to February.

How low might they go?

Paul Gauguin, if we are lucky might drop to close to $3/3,500 per person.

Windstar will likely come in closer to $2500, maybe even lower in March.

As always our closed Interline rates will be even lower, ask us for our predictions.

If you have a Milestone event, especially a honeymoon or similar, where you need to book in advance, their everyday discounts offer a truly life-changing experience that is worth every cent.

Review: “Dreams of Tahiti” cruise on Windstar’s Star Breeze

Just say the word, “Tahiti,” and, for many, it instantly evokes images of serene islands rising from sparkling waters in every hue of blue, palm trees swaying over pristine, white sands. Having just returned from our first time there, I can tell you it’s just as you imagined.

Pam and I made the 7,000-mile-plus, one-way trip from Florida to Tahiti’s capital city, Papeete, in two segments: Miami to San Francisco, then aboard French bee’s nonstop flight from San Francisco to Papeete.

We were in French Polynesian to take the seven-night, “Dreams of Tahiti” cruise on Windstar’s Star Breeze, the power yacht that just replaced Windstar’s sailing ship, “Wind Spirit” after a long run serving the Society Islands (the collective name for the 118 islands that comprise French Polynesia).

As a cruise line, Windstar has cruised here for almost 40 years, and one of the reasons Star Breeze was brought in is that she more than doubles the guest capacity of Wind Spirit, an indication of how in-demand Tahiti is as a cruise destination.

tahiti 7 day cruise

In late 2022, we took a Caribbean holiday cruise on Star Legend, the sister yacht to Star Breeze, so we were very familiar with the layout. We learned the previous cruise to ours had encountered stormy weather, which forced it to miss several ports of call (November to April is the rainy season). Fortunately, the Tahitian gods were smiling, and we had near-perfect weather the entire time.

Boarding and Disembarkation: 10/10

Guest capacity on Star Breeze is 312 — there were 254 of us on this cruise — so getting on and off the ship is relatively painless, one of many advantages to small ship cruising. One word of advice: Boarding commences at 1 pm, so no reason to get there early and wait in their shaded baggage area. Located some 1,200 miles south of the equator, halfway between Australia and Los Angeles, expect it to be hot, and humid.

You can make advance arrangements with Windstar if you need transport to the airport, and they also offer a post-cruise, three-night stay at Moorea’s Hotel Manava Beach Resort and Spa, which several people from our cruise opted to do. Uber hasn’t come to the islands yet, but taxis are plentiful. Be aware most don’t take credit cards, so you’ll need cash (American money is accepted pretty much everywhere) or Polynesian francs.

By the way, if you do arrive early — and many flights do — there is a large shopping market near the dock, as well as restaurants and bars.

Design and Appearance: 10/10

While Windstar’s power yachts like Star Breeze are almost 30 years old, it looks new. It had a major makeover a few years ago that added a whole new midsection and other upgrades, plus it is routinely refreshed every two years.

Getting around its eight decks is a “breeze,” so to speak. Most days, you’ll be topside on decks 7 and 8, where you’ll find the Yacht Club, a lounge with panoramic windows — perfect for relaxing, reading, meeting friends or enjoying coffee and light snacks from the bar. Also on these decks are the pool and hot tubs, the Star Grill and bar and plenty of seating.

Aft on deck 7 you’ll find the Veranda, serving breakfast and lunch for dining inside or al fresco. One deck below is Compass Rose, hosting nightly entertainment, and on deck 5, the multi-purpose Lounge. The main dining room is Amphora, located on deck 3.

Just like a yacht, the vibe here is relaxed and informal. Capt. Terry and his officers circulate freely among the guests — they even an open bridge policy, and you are welcome to visit and chat with the officers on duty. Clothing-wise, you can dispense with the formalities. Country club or island chic is the order of the day — in the heat you’ll want to dress for comfort.

Stateroom: 9/10

It’s an all-suite ship, and ours was a balcony stateroom on deck 6. Like many older vessels, it featured a step-out, French balcony that let in the Polynesian trade winds. Our upgraded bath had double sinks and a walk-in shower. There was a walk-in closet, along with a seating area beside the bed.

While there were both American and European plugs, as well as USB connections, as always, we pack a power strip for our electronics. There is a nice selection of choices on your stateroom TV, including in-demand movies/TV shows and music.

Sono, our stateroom attendant, refreshed the room twice daily. One of the nice “extras” Windstar provided were samples of local Tahitian products, such as vanilla sandalwood soap (vanilla is a major crop in the islands), Monoi Tiare moisturizing oil, made from the tiare flower (the Tahitian gardenia), and perfume made from Tapanier flowers as we could “indulge in the enchantment of your French Polynesian experience when you return home.”

Note you won’t receive a copy of the Daily Planner on your bed — it’s available digitally on the Windstar app or your stateroom TV. If you need a hard copy, guest services can provide it.

Star Breeze offers a full range of dining options, including two specialty restaurants — Candles and the Spanish-themed Cuadro 44 — plus the main dining room, Amphora. There’s also the more casual breakfast/lunch venue, Veranda and the eclectic Star Grill on deck 8. Candles and Veranda share the same space, aft on deck 7, and feature both open air and inside dining (Veranda by day and Candles at night). It’s a good idea to make your specialty reservations after you board.

The menus offer something for every taste and do a good job of incorporating local favorites as well. Windstar has a partnership with the James Beard Foundation, and menus feature a James Beard selection as an option.

Light snacks are available in the Yacht Club and soft-serve ice cream is adjacent to the Star Grill. I liked to start my day with Swedish Pancakes in Veranda, and end in Amphora, where the food is uniformly excellent. When late night hunger strikes, there’s room service 24/7 as well.

Excursions: 10/10

While enjoying a five-star vacation at sea is a destination in itself, guests are here to experience everything French Polynesia has to offer, and Windstar’s excursion lineup has something for everyone.

As you would expect, water sports are front and center, with many opportunities to snorkel in some of the world’s most beautiful, crystal-clear waters. Other high-interest tours include visits to black pearl farms, vanilla plantations, white sand (and black sand) beaches and sightseeing/shopping.

Along with the excursions, Windstar does an commendable job of highlighting the local culture. We were joined on our cruise by Pearl, a Tahitian cultural ambassador, who entertained and educated us about the islands, as well as Tihoti, who spoke about the rich history behind Tahitian tattoos.

Windstar also staged two highlight events on private motus (islands): A beach BBQ and a fire dancing demonstration and sunset dinner. In both cases, it was a first-rate experience for the guests.

Service: 10/10

With a crew/guest ratio that approached 1:1 on this cruise, we felt pampered. For anything we needed, someone was always close at hand to assist. Special kudos to the Maitre d’ Hotel, Karnick, who took great care of us in Amphora (coincidentally, he also served in the same role on our Star Legend cruise) and Sono, our stateroom attendant. Guest Services was also a big help for guests who needed assistance with WiFi.

Entertainment: 9/10

When it comes to small ship cruising, guests have to adjust their expectations. Typically, you don’t find big stage productions, Broadway shows or even casinos. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be entertained after a day of excursions.

Star Breeze featured nightly entertainment in Compass Rose, the lounge/bar area on deck 6, where the house band Aplooza played guests requests and on one occasion, performed a tribute to The Beatles. Pearl also played here as well, offering up music from her native Tahiti.

On one day of the cruise, the Tahitian group The Mammas and The Pappas played while Tahitian women created wrist corsages for the ladies from tropical flowers and demonstrated how to wear a pareo, the traditional wraparound skirt found in the islands.

For water sports enthusiasts, one of the ship’s most popular features is the Water Sports Platform aft on deck 6. Here, guests are welcome to swim, paddleboard, kayak or just chill on a float while Star Breeze is anchored off one of the islands. Now this really is how the other half lives on their yachts.

Overall Rating: 9.6/10

For guests who want to immerse themselves into the culture of these storied islands, Windstar draws on their long experience here to create unforgettable memories. You’ll discover each island visited — from Tahiti and Moorea to Riatea, Huahine and Bora Bora — has its own unique charm and personality.

By including several overnights, you’ll have an opportunity to do some exploring on your own. Don’t miss sampling the local fruits and cuisine — we bought coconut bread from a street vendor and it was the best bread we’ve ever had. Although Tahitian and French are mostly what’s spoken, English is also widely in evidence as well, and the islanders themselves couldn’t be more warm and welcoming.

Your fare includes everything except alcohol, gratuities, laundry, shore excursions and Internet. If you need extra pampering, there’s is a full-service spa onboard, where I treated myself to a shave and facial.

There’s no better way to see this magical place than on a boutique cruise ship — make that, yacht — like Star Breeze. One visit and you’ll be under its enchanted spell.

For the 7 day Tahiti cruise how much of it is scenic cruising close to an island?  I am trying to decide between Ocean View and Balcony?  Thoughts?

My Pacific Princess cruise was cancelled due to the ship being sold.

Which ship are you on?  Wind Spirit does not have balcony cabins.

We also go bumped from a Pacific Princess cruise in October 2020.  Switched to Windstar Wind Spirit at the same time.  It was also cancelled.  Switched Windstar to October 2021.

We are looking at Star Breeze Dec. 2021.

@NMTraveller

The balcony staterooms on Breeze are Juliet balconies just enough to stand on not sit, unless you're in a suite. Mostly the islands are in the distance. You might be happy with a picture window unless you like the fresh air which in Tahiti might be nice to have.

@Heartfelttraveler

I'm a bit worried about our November  2021 cruise just because so much is unknown about the efficacy of the vaccine. These variants have me a bit uneasy. I would HATE to see you get bumped from your third cruise- we're batting zero after three booked cruises since last March. Have November 2021 booked but also a backup for August 2022. But for you to get on Spirit you'd have to wait all the way until May 2022 which I don't blame you for not wanting. Will be keeping fingers crossed this year for all of us.

Host Jazzbeau

Host Jazzbeau

When we booked Star Legend for a cruise in the Med, the Juliet balconies didn't seem worth the extra cost so we had booked an ocean view.  But in looking at replacement cruises [you know, Covid...] I have seen pictures and videos that show how the balcony doors slide open to create a huge open area for fresh air and clear views.  Now I would book a veranda.

I have been on the Breeze in the Caribbean and I would only reserve a balcony. Open the doors, gaze out, total quiet and privacy, incredible views, the freshest air, loved it. I have been on the Wind Spirit in Tahiti loved every second and did not miss a balcony but it was the sails different concept and glorious. If I were on a motor yacht in Tahiti a balcony would be a must. I am partial to the sailing ships 25 times, motor yacht once, loved it but two different concepts. Splurge go for the balcony. Happy Sailing

If you can wait that long, especially for your first trip to Tahiti I would do Spirit on one of the first sailings in May 2022. The glory of those sails unfurling, as Strenz says, is unmatched. Not that Breeze will not be wonderful, it's just that Spirit was made for Tahiti. And the porthole view does not diminish the experience.

The other piece is that their are greater chances of good weather in May than December. It's VERY hot in December and more prone to rain. I did my last Spirit Tahiti in Nov/Dec, and for 18 days we had only sunny days but for one. Just do it- whichever.

Sorry but I am confused. Why are you saying that to get on the Spirit you have to wait until May 2022? We have a booking for July 21. Have they cancelled all the cruises for 2021?

Sorry for the confusion. No they have not cancelled all 2021 Tahiti cruises and hopefully your July 2021 sailing will proceed.

Wind Spirit is headed west after October 2021 and then Breeze takes over for winter Tahiti, till April 2022. Then Spirit comes back online in Tahiti.

Princess Cruises and Fincantieri Announce to Postpone Delivery of Star Princess

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

MONFALCONE, Italy, (April 19, 2024) – Princess Cruises and ship builder Fincantieri today announced the mutual decision to postpone the delivery of the next Sphere Class ship, Star Princess.

Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.

The new inaugural sailings of Star Princess will sail roundtrip from Barcelona and include an 11-day Mediterranean voyage on October 4, 2025, and a 7-day Mediterranean voyage on October 15, 2025, that precede a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale on October 22, 2025 for the ship’s first Caribbean season. These three new cruises will open for sale on April 30, 2024.

Guests who are booked on any of the impacted voyages will be given three options: book any Princess cruise worldwide, including aboard the new Star, sister ship Sun Princess, or any other Princess ship.

Guests who elect to rebook will receive future cruise- and onboard-credits depending on the cruise they select.  Guests will also have the option to cancel and receive a full refund of the cruise fare.

Princess will protect travel agent commissions on all bookings that have been paid in full.

Star Princess is the second in the new Sphere Class of ships for Princess. Sister ship Sun Princess, built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, debuted in February and is hailed as the next level Love Boat featuring the iconic and elegant structural lines Princess is known for, while delivering an evolution of the brand with new eye-catching architectural spectacles like The Dome, the cruise industry’s first geodesic feature on the top deck, and The Sphere, the suspended glass Sphere Piazza at the center of the cruise ship.

More details on both Sphere Class ships can be found at  www.princess.com/sunprincess .
