I feel you did not consider the height of an average garage.

indeed the height was not considered. Average garage is 7′ high and if you have an old flip-up style garage like mine, that’s another 3″ of clearance I need to get it through the opening –and maybe more depending on slope of driveway. Most of these won’t work in that case.

Here are various types of garages for storing your new travel trailer. 

Residential Attached Garage

If you’re lucky enough to have a residential attached garage, this is a great location to store your RV if you don’t keep a car or other vehicle in it. Depending on whether you have a single, double, or even larger type of attached garage, the average garage measurements begin at 12 by 20 ft. 

Many residential garages vary in terms of their height, especially when you consider the fact that some garages have lofted or overhead storage options. However, the average residential garage is anywhere from 18 to 25 ft tall, so keep all of these measurements in mind as you shop. This is the first place to begin when it comes to finding a travel trailer that will fit in your residential attached garage! 

Again, you may have a double or even triple-car garage, leading to a much larger interior space. This likely won’t affect the overall height of your garage, but every residential attached garage is unique. I highly recommend measuring your own space so that you know your precise dimensions and can shop with this knowledge in mind. 

Residential Detached Garage

Just like a residential attached garage, detached garages offer a safe and secure place to keep your RV, no matter the season. The dimensions of a residential detached garage are similar if not identical to the attached garage measurements. However, you may have a detached garage with a bit more height given that it isn’t attached to your residential home and doesn’t need to match that particular roofline.

The Rockwood is available in a hard-sided pop-up travel trailer as well as a softer option if you need more living space overall. However, the hard-sided Rockwood offers more durability in the long run, particularly from rain or snow. 

The length of this particular RV ranges from 18 to 21 ft long. The collapsed height is under 6 feet tall. If you have a longer garage than average, fitting this camper indoors is no problem, but you may have to park this one in your carport or driveway, depending on your specific situation. 

With extra length comes extra interior living space, offering you a convertible queen or king-size bed as well as a convertible dinette area to sleep additional people. There’s a kitchen inside as well as a comfortable interior design, complete with air conditioning if you need it. Complete with all-terrain tires, a raised chassis, a rugged exterior design, as well as the air inflation technology that OPUS is known for, this travel trailer is great for boondocking. Not only does it have off-grid utility capabilities, but it also is designed to be used no matter the season and no matter the road conditions. 

Let’s talk about measurements first. When collapsed, the OP 2 is just over 18 ft long, 6 ft wide, and has a height of 4.5 ft. There have been plenty of unique travel trailers on this list so far, but the Airstream Basecamp is one of the most eye-catching RVs currently being manufactured. Available in two different sizes, this aluminum beauty may not fit in your attached garage, but it’s certainly an option to consider if you want something durable and one-of-a-kind. Let’s take a closer look now. 

Starting at $46k, the Airstream Basecamp is available in either a 16 ft long or 20 ft long model. No matter which you choose, the height of this RV is just under 10 ft tall. This may not fit in the average garage or carport, so definitely get your measurements exact before you fall in love with this option.

The primary difference between the two sizes is the sleeping arrangements. Both models have a large panoramic front window so that you can take in the views of the great outdoors, but the smaller model sleeps two people in the larger model sleeps four. This is an important distinction if you want to sleep the entire family or bring some friends along with you camping. 

With durable materials and more amenities than we can list here, the Basecamp is truly a special travel trailer to consider, especially for resale value. However, it is arguably the largest option on this list, so make sure it fits in your garage or driveway before getting ahead of yourself!

Look, there are plenty of reasons not to want a large RV. Smaller models, such as small travel trailers, often mean significant savings. Not only will your RV no cost the equivalent of buying another house when you choose smaller travel trailers, but you can also expect better gas mileage, an easier time finding parking spaces, and plenty of other advantages beside—all while still having greater comfort than, say, tent camping.

So there’s plenty to recommend getting yourself a small travel trailer if you’re looking into recreational camping vehicles. One of the biggest drawbacks, however, is that many of them, in trying to make the most of their smaller space, skip including a bathroom.

In which case your bathroom situation is the same as it would be if you were tent camping. Let’s be real: Is that what you are looking for in a recreational vehicle?

The blackwater tank is external to the trailer, too, so should your toilet water get smelly, it won’t be a problem inside the travel trailer.

And the rest of the travel trailer is loaded with similarly classy, high-end features, including great appliances (a convection oven or more standard microwave, refrigerator, and foldable two-burner cooktop), a cutting board sink cover, an Ultraleather dinette set, Moen faucet, LED HD TV and JVC stereo, blackout shades for the panoramic front windows, auxiliary heating and air conditioning, and a great fan for when you simply need air rotation. Additionally, those windows are tempered and tinted, the TV comes with cable hookups, the roof is a white aluminum that helps keep temperatures moderate, and a ZipDee patio awning gives extra outdoor shade when you want it. Not only is it one of the largest areas of the camper, but the shower space and toilet are separated for optimum privacy, so you and a family member can use the bathroom at the same time. Like other ultra-mini travel trailers, the HC1 doesn’t come with much. In fact, in order to get a bathroom, you need to order it with a couple of add-ons: the dry flush toilet and road shower, to be precise. But, and this is a big but: For travelers looking for something incredibly portable that can go nearly anywhere and who don’t need a ton of space because they’re minimalists to begin with? The Happier Camper HC1 is pretty much perfect.

Officially, it sleeps up to 5. Unofficially, you’d have to really, really, really like each other in order to sleep 5 in it; we think it’s best for a couple or a small family. Additionally, because it is only 11 feet long and only 1100 pounds dry weight, and comes with off-road friendly tires, it’s great for beach camping, dirt roads, and other backcountry expeditions, which is not something that can be said of very many travel trailers.

So is it ideal that you have to order the bathroom as an add-on? No. But if portability and minimalism are your goals, the HC1 is one of the best bets available. Simply order a dry flush toilet and road shower (and you’ll probably want a privacy/bathroom tent , too) and add on to what the HC1 already offers, which is substantial.

In order to fit as much as it does in such a small space, some sacrifices had to be made, of course. For instance, the dinette converts into a bed, and vice-versa, so you can’t have the bed and dinette available to you at the same time. It does come with both an oven and a refrigerator, however, which is rare for such small trailers.

Scamp 13’ Standard Trailer

Like the iCamp Elite, Scamp’s 13’ Standard Trailer is a brilliant little travel trailer, making the most of the space available. Coming in two layouts, only one of which includes a bathroom, the 13-foot travel trailer shows some real Minnesotan ingenuity, as the 13-foot bathroom-included version also includes a shower, beds that convert into tables, storage space in the seats, a gas stove with sink, multiple closets, and all sorts of proof that it uses space incredibly well. For instance, the 12-gallon water tank is designed for use with the bathroom (including the shower) and kitchen. Similarly, the Sani Potti toilet can be hooked up to gray water so there’s no risk of contaminating your other water. And other perks of the 13-foot Scamp Trailer include a stove cover, a microwave oven, a front porch light, vinyl flooring and fiberglass cabinets for easy cleaning, a substantially higher number of outlets and lights than many comparably-sized trailers, as well as roof-mounted air conditioning and heating.

Taxa Cricket Camper

We love this ultra-mini travel trailer. Only 15 feet and with a width of 6’11” it’s about the size of a full-size truck, and it’s dry weight of 1500 pounds means it’s easily towed. Like a few of the other smallest travel trailers on this list, it doesn’t come with a bathroom, but you can add-on an external shower and portable toilet. (If you choose to do so, we recommend this toilet and this bathroom tent .)

Unlike some of the other ultra-mini travel trailers we love, though, the Cricket Camper is expandable, with a pop-up tent that makes it much roomier when you set up camp. Additionally, it might be the most rugged and badass of all the ultra-mini travel trailers we’ve looked, designed to literally go anywhere you can pull it. And there is an add-on option for an external shower that can come with the camper if you opt to go that route.

Other fantastic features include the exterior storage. Not only are their bumper steps to which you can strap gear externally, there’s also a roof rack system and tongue mounted toolbox so you can take your outdoor playthings with you and make any necessary repairs easily and quickly. As durable as the Cricket Camper is, however, odds are you won’t need that toolbox. Still, having it so easily accessible is plenty nice. Like the Happy Camper HC1, the rear hatch makes loading easy, too.

A 32-inch by 20-inch picture window gives great panoramic views directly from the lounge. Additional storage under the bed is a nice plus, and a pop-up table provides easy lounging space while keeping the cabin from feeling cluttered. The kitchen offers a large counter with a covered sink and 6 large cubbies for prepping, cooking, and storage. The electrical system is top notch, too, with interior LED lighting throughout (including task lighting over the kitchen), Zamp solar inlets (which are pre-wired), and 120V inlets for shore power connection, enough for 3+ days off-grid. Additionally, a tow vehicle connection allows you to recharge the battery while you haul the trailer to your next campsite.

Taxa Mantis Trek Camper

The Cricket’s larger brother, we love the Mantis Trek for its backcountry and off-grid capabilities. At 19 feet, it’s a bit larger than the Cricket, but still fits in a standard length and height garage, as it folds down to a height of only 6 feet 10 inches. At that size and weight (just more than 3,000 pounds), it’s still quite easy to tow and store, and the NASA-inspired design, integrated electronics and plumbing, and off-grid capacities mean it’s ready for nearly any adventure you can dream up. Like the Cricket, it pops up when set up as your base camp, meaning you have far more room available to you than you might imagine.

The Mantis Trek is designed specifically with off-the-grid use in mind, and as such, is powered by 12-volt batteries and plumbed for propane. That propane allows for a two-burner stove and water heater, with an included Truma Combi furnace for year-round use. Freshwater tank capacity of 20 gallons and a graywater tank capacity of 22 gallons are both great for a travel trailer of this size, and a wet bath is included as a cassette toilet (4 gallon fresh water, 5 gallon waste).

The pop-up roof gives you both more room and increased ventilation, and the queen-sized bed comes with under bed storage. USB charging ports help you keep your gear charged, and the two 20-pound liquid propane tanks mean you can stay fueled up for cooking and hot water. Exterior features are designed with a rugged lifestyle in mind, including a powder-coated steel frame, front stabilizer jacks, powder-coated gravel guards, a spare wheel replete with all-terrain tire, 16 inches of clearance, torsion axle suspension, a solar pre-wired system, a crossbar-included roof rack system for strapping down your outdoor gear and toys, and a large 8 foot patio awning.

Inside the camper shell, nice touches include the birch wood kitchen, replete with plenty of extra storage, LED interior lights (including a reading light), a Dometic 12V 65-liter fridge and freezer combo, a mesh side screen door for increased ventilation, room divider curtains, and more—including the option to switch up your power sources.

The Mantis Trek is designed to run on multiple power schemes. Not only can it run off of two 12-volt deep cycle batteries, it can also run off shore power with a 110-volt converter or a solar system if set up in that way, and the additional propane plumbing is a nice touch, too, as are the electric brakes, single axle, and independent suspension system.

Fresh water capacity is 20 gallons, with a 22-gallon gray water tank and wet bath inside. Also included is a cassette toilet.

United Recreational Vehicles iCamp Elite

The iCamp Elite is one of the smallest travel trailers on this list, and while it’s short on space, its diminutive size is not short on features. Heavy-duty aluminum tubing, industrial strength styrofoam, and high-gloss fiberglass construction makes this trailer incredibly hardy, and it is one of the few that handles just as well in terrible conditions. It’s also incredibly stylish and sporty.

About that size: If you’re a big person, or need a lot of space, this probably isn’t the travel trailer for you. Ceilings, for instance, top out at five feet eleven inches, and furniture is rounded to fit in tight spaces. If you’re claustrophobic, this isn’t the camper for you.

That lack of space, however, is accounted for by a feature-laden design, in addition to the obvious pluses of reducing your drag (and correspondingly, your fuel usage) compared to more traditionally-sized travel trailers.

Other features include the simple easy of towing such a small trailer, the glossy painted furniture, sweet wallpaper, and an iPod connection for better tunes. And the bathroom itself is one of the larger parts of the trailer, replete with toilet and shower. So if you aren’t claustrophobic, and are looking for easy towing options, look no further. The iCamp Elite is one of the best truly small travel trailers we’ve seen that also includes a bathroom.

A few final tips when looking at small travel trailers

Rent first if at all possible.

It can be hard to know what you want until you’ve spent some time RVing, and that’s especially true if you’re weighing multiple different options. It could entirely be the case that you know you want a small travel trailer with a bathroom but not much more than that, and the list above is lots of information, sure, but that information isn’t the same as experience.

As a result, if you’re considering buying one of the travel trailers above, we strongly recommend you consider trying to rent one if not exactly the same then similar to what you want so that you can try it for a trip or two first. Even the most affordable of small travel trailers are not exactly cheap, and you don’t want to be saddled with an expensive new toy only to find out it’s not actually what you want.

Some people want a full wet bath with a shower and sink, while others want to save space and prefer to simply have a toilet.

Whatever your choice, these ten camper vans with bathrooms will give you an idea of what’s available and how the manufacturer incorporated the bathroom in the floor plan.

1. Airstream Interstate 19

One of the most iconic names in travel trailers , Airstream teamed up with one of the most notable manufacturers of cargo vans, Mercedes-Benz, to offer a line of five different touring coaches.

The Interstate 19 has a European-style wet bath directly behind the driver’s seat, with a toilet that’s placed for maximum space as well as a shower and sink. 

Plus, Airstream has added extra features that make all the difference, including a waterproof toilet paper cover, articulated mirror above the sink and a clothesline.

Throughout the rest of the van, you’ll find seating for five (three seatbelts) on the rear sofa/bed and side benches, and plenty of nooks for storage.

The camper van has a fully-equipped galley with a two-burner gas stove, a large stainless steel sink, additional slide-out counter space, a 0.7 cu.ft. convection microwave, a refrigerator with a freezer, and a slide-out pantry.

On the other side of the room, there’s a separate 26 x 24.5-inch stand-up shower and wardrobe. 

Moving forward in the camper van, there are twin beds on either side of the space, which can be used as lounge seating by day and sleeping space at night.

The beds can convert into a king-sized bed, and there’s tons of storage below as well as overhead cabinets above.

This European-made Class B motorhome is very different from the others we’ve highlighted so far. It’s more like a pop-top camper, with the sleeping area in a loft above.

The Nugget Plus Highroof has a bathroom nook at the back with a fixed chemical toilet and a super convenient drop-down sink. 

There’s no shower in the bathroom, but Westfalia does offer the option to add one on the exterior.

Just outside the bathroom there’s a spacious kitchen area with a 40-liter chest fridge that’s flush with the countertop when closed for extra prep space, a two-burner gas stove, and circular sink.

There’s tons of storage, including a handy shelf between the sink and the headrest of the bench seat.

As you exit the kitchen and enter the seating area, there’s a wardrobe for even more storage. 

The Nugget Plus Highroof has a bench seat behind the driving cab that seats three and converts into a bed for two.

The driver and passenger seats swivel, and Westfalia includes a removable table for dining or work.

Thor Motorcoach is a well-known manufacturer of recreational vehicles, and they have three different floorplans available for their Tellaro model of Class B motorhome and campervan.

The 20AT is our pick for the best camper vans with a bathroom, although the wet bath in the 20LT and 20KT are slightly larger. 

This is because the 20AT has a king-sized bed in the rear and an optional retractable Pop-Top Sky Bunk™ that sleeps an additional adult or a couple of kiddos. 

This camper van’s bathroom still has everything you need, though. There’s a cassette toilet in the wet bath, with an overhead shower and power vent with a wall switch.

The bath is located in the middle of the van, though, so let’s discuss some of the other things that make this camper special.

We already mentioned the king-sized bed in the rear, and it’s convertible into two long benches by day. There’s a huge amount of storage below these benches, and overhead cabinets span both sides of the van. 

Tellaro also includes some extra features with their camper vans, such as a hideaway drawer for a pet food and water dish. 

Additionally, the camper comes with a solar power system, Winegard® ConnecT 2.0 4G/Wi-Fi/Digital TV antenna, a Thule®  bike rack that accommodates two full-size adult bicycles, and Thule® roof ladder and 16-foot lateral arm power patio awning with integrated LED lighting.

After all, it takes up quite a bit of valuable space. Let’s talk about the pros and cons.

Pros and Cons of Having a Bathroom in Your Camper Van

By having a bathroom and shower in your camper van, you can enjoy all kinds of perks including: 

Greater comfort and home-like feel

More flexibility for camping off-grid, more discreet for stealth camping situations, easy and convenient hygiene, freedom to live off-grid for longer.

There are pros and cons to everything, though, and some of the reasons you might not want to have a bathroom in your camper van include:

Reduces your available living space

Costs more (whether you’re building it yourself or buying a pre-built van), uses up your fresh water more quickly, makes your van heavier (the bathroom itself, plus the larger water tanks), may develop stinky issues that require expensive repairs.

Things to Consider Before You Put a Bathroom In Your Van

As you weigh the pros and cons, there are some questions to ask yourself to help make the best decision for your situation: 

Will you be camping primarily in campgrounds or on free public land? What about stealth camping?

Will you be traveling with small children or do you have a hard time going out to the woods every time you need to go to the bathroom , would you mind losing space in your layout , are you claustrophobic , do you just need a toilet or a shower, too, what’s your budget consider the up front cost of the project or van, as well as maintenance costs. , what kind of maintenance are you prepared to handle (emptying the black tank, winterizing to prevent pipes from freezing, plumbing repairs if something breaks or clogs, etc.), what water tank capacity do you need (fresh, gray, black), different types of camper van bathrooms.

There are two primary types of bathrooms you will find in camper vans, if they include one. 

1. Wet Bath 

This is the type most commonly found in the vans that I featured early in this article, and it basically means that all surfaces within the room can get wet.

It’s probably the most popular because of the privacy that it offers, as well as being ready to use at any time.

However, it takes up valuable space that you might not have in a shorter van, and it adds significant extra weight.

2. Hidden Bathroom 

Like its name conveys, a hidden bathroom is made using a combination of cabinets, drawers, and fold-out systems to reveal the toilet or set up the shower.

With this option, the bathroom is less of a “room” and the toilet and shower serve more like appliances that you pull out and put away for each use.

However, it is a better way to have a bathroom without sacrificing so much living space to have a full wet bath.

The lack of a dedicated room also means that you’ll sacrifice some privacy when using it, since there are no walls.

And, the toilet and especially the shower may take a couple of minutes to set up before you can use it, unlike a wet bath, which is ready to use at any time (as long as you don’t use it like a second closet). 

Most of the wet baths for the camper vans on the list above have porcelain toilets, just like those you’d find in a residential bathroom. But if you are planning to create a hidden bathroom or building a wet bath into your van, you might consider some of the other different types of toilets.

Let’s go into the pros and cons of each:

3: Porcelain Toilet  

Using these toilets is almost the same as going “the go” on a normal household toilet.

The difference being, you have to empty the waste tank every so often, so the capacity of your van’s black water tank is very important.

I noted the capacities for the vans above, and for reference, a 12-gallon black water tank will likely last you about 2-3 weeks of daily use before you need to dump it.

There are some downsides with this set up, as well. You need to use RV-safe toilet paper, since regular toilet paper could cause clogs, and the system requires regular dumping, chemical treatment, and maintenance to keep it functioning well. 

4: Cassette Toilet 

Another popular type of toilet for camper vans is a cassette toilet, which doesn’t have any exterior plumbing (i.e. it doesn’t connect to the black tank).

Instead, there’s a compartment in the base (sometimes there’s one for solid waste and one for liquid waste).

The upsides of this type of toilet are that it’s very small, portable, and easy to maintain.

That said, its low profile can make it difficult for some people to use, and the waste tanks are much smaller, requiring more frequent dumping.

You’ll also need to install an access panel in the side of your camper in order to access the waste tank for dumping, since a cassette toilet is usually fixed in place. 

5: Composting Toilet 

The most environmentally friendly type of toilet for camper vans is the composting toilet , which separates liquid and solid waste, and you add something like sawdust, peat moss, or coconut coir after each use to facilitate the composting process.

This type of toilet does not require water, but it does need a small amount of electricity to power the vent fan.

Contrary to assumption, composting toilets do not usually smell, especially if you are using and emptying them properly.

The biggest drawbacks to this type of toilet is the expensive up front cost and their size, as they’re bigger than any of the other types of toilet.

6: Portable Toilet

If you’re looking for something that’s small and more portable than a cassette toilet, you may want to consider a portable toilet .

This type has a removable tank under the bowl for the waste, which you can dump in an RV dump station or even a normal toilet that’s connected to sewer.

Portable toilets typically have a hand pump that’s connected to a fresh water tank for flushing.

Other than the small waste tank size, the other downside with portable toilets is that they require the use of chemicals to prevent odors.

Cost and Final Thoughts About Camper Vans with Bathrooms

Whether you’re planning to build a bathroom set up in your van, or you’re considering buying a camper van with a bathroom, there are options for everyone.

One thing we didn’t really discuss in this article was price, and you might be wondering, is it expensive to add a bathroom to a camper van? The answer – and the reason we haven’t mentioned it yet – is that it totally depends on your preferences and your budget. 

In our article, “ How Much Does a Sprinter Van Conversion Cost? ”, we found that the cost of the items you need for building a wet bath in your van could range between $1,533 and $2,500, but that wasn’t taking into account more expensive items like a composting toilet, which could cost about $1,400 on its own.

On the other end of things, you could buy a portable toilet for around $100 and build a divider relatively cheaply.

And of course, the price for pre-built camper vans with bathrooms is quite a bit higher than the cost of a van with no bathroom.

You didn’t mention the best toilets of all. I can’t imagine Jeff Bezos carrying his urine up the gang plank of his luxury yacht or “composting” (it’s not if you live permanently in the van, it’s basically shi**ing in a kitty litter box). Best toilet of all – a mascerating toilet. I have the new Saniflo. Drive out into the wilderness, push a button, and drive away, that’s it. I don’t have a grey tank, so that more water goes into the black tank to prevent blockages. Blockages always caused by solids, so just with two tanks – fresh and black – and ZERO grey water, I have never had a blockage. Best system ever. Take an old yachtie to think of it.
