Popular on Variety

The singer got on the phone with Variety to talk about the current wave of Hozier-mania just as he was kicking off a second year of shows in the U.S., by popular demand. (In Los Angeles, where his Hollywood Bowl show proved to be a tough ticket last summer, he’ll be doing three nights at the Kia Forum starting on Sept. 17.) Most of the shows are sold out, and scalper sales are discouraged through the exclusive use of the fan-to-fan Fair Market Exchange system, so if you have trouble easily landing a pair of seats, try not to be… too bitter.

It’s a really good feeling. I feel blessed to have the career that I do. It’s a very sweet landmark after 10 years of a career, and I feel very fortunate glad that I’m still able to do this and still finding new audiences. It’s encouraging, and a nice way to celebrate a 10th anniversary.

“Take Me to Church” came so close to being a No. 1, but people have by and large have not thought of you as a singles kind of guy, so much as they’re there for the album, or for the performance, not the one-off. So does it seem mysterious to you that the world suddenly gravitates to a single song?

I didn’t see it coming to this extent, for sure. I knew I wanted to release the song. I knew it was fun. It’s a song that did not (come out originally) because there was a choice between two songs for the album, and “Too Sweet” was kind of placed to the side. So I didn’t necessarily expect this kind of reaction. I think I kind of found a new fan base in the last couple of years, and maybe after the tour and after “Unreal Unearth,” maybe there’s more people who are just listening to the work. But this does feel maybe a little bit mysterious.

What’s a a really sweet thing for me is that it was the very same week that the last Irish artist got a No. 1. Sinead O’Connor was the last Irish artist with the No. 1 in the U.S., and that was 34 years ago. It was the year that I was born, and it was the very same charting week in April, 34 years ago. So, you used the word “mysterious” there. … I don’t know, there’s something very wonderful about that.

“Too Sweet” is a playful song. A lot of your material, people might associate a certain nobility with it. But this is not the most high-minded song you’ve ever done.

Oh, no, certainly not. I mean, it’s a song about somebody who wants to self-destruct and get trashed! You know, I’ve had a quiet laugh to myself about that. I’ve written songs that definitely deal with more complicated, more difficult themes, for sure. But I guess it’s something that’s fun and immediate and doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s part of its appeal. And it’s also why maybe initially, when the choice came of putting it on the album, I thought that maybe it wouldn’t have worked. But there you go.

The bass tones are amazing. Is there a secret sauce that made the song work, sonically?

Thank you. We took a really natural approach to that at a place in east L.A. called Sargent Recorders. We kind of took some early Peter Gabriel references on some of the tones, on the drums, some of those delays, et cetera.

Can you say what the choice was when you were picking what would make the “Unreal Unearth” album sequence — what the song was that you picked over this?

It’s a good thing that you made those picks at those respective times, because “Eat Your Young” felt important to that album.

Oh, thank you. Yeah, it’s worked out.

Did you always plan to do a kind of extras EP?

It sort of came about as the album was shaping up. There were a few songs in particular that my labels — both at home, my label Ruby Works in Ireland, and Sony Columbia —had as favorite songs from the sessions, which I wasn’t necessarily head over heels over, or just ones that I felt (could be let go) when it came to the push and pull of what was gonna make it. We knew we had some really good songs on our hands that people weren’t gonna hear if it wasn’t on the album. So I did want to release “Too Sweet,” and there was stuff there, especially my song with Alison Russell… I just did so much recording in that period that it wouldn’t have made for a terribly cohesive album, along with being overlong. So the idea developed as we were getting closer to the release that, OK, you know what, there’s stuff here that I would like people to hear and the label certainly would like people to hear. And so we’ll just come back around and we’ll do a couple of EP releases, and make sense of it that way.

You said EPs, plural, and fans have been speculating if there is another EP coming. So is there still another EP on the way?

I hope so. I’m hesitant to promise anything. But I’m planning to do so, I will say that. So hopefully; fingers crossed. We’re looking at that now, finishing up some mixes.

“Wildflower and Barley,” the song with Allison Russell — was she originally on it even when you first tracked it, or did you add her later?

Yeah, I wrote it in Wicklow initially, and Jeff Gitty (Gitelman) traveled over at some point during the pandemic, once orders were kind of slightly more open, and we sort of worked out the arrangement a bit more. And then between Wicklow and London, I had sort of recorded it as a duet, even in the demo form, but I didn’t have somebody to sing it with. But Allison is somebody who I’ve known for years and I’ve sang with many times on stage. She’s a dear friend and an artist who I have huge admiration and respect and love for. So, I asked if she would be up for it, and we cut it in L.A. at some point in late 2022. I always had it in mind as a duet and always really wanted to sing with Allison. So I’m delighted that we’re on the road together now, too. It’s all kind of just worked out in a really lovely way that we’re getting to sing it every night. Around the same time I had hopped on a song of Allison’s on her beautiful “Returner” album, and then I asked if she would join me on the duet for “Wildflower.”

It’s nice to see Allison get some additional recognition through this tour — her name is very large, just for starters, in the tour adverts we see on walls in Hollywood and places like that.

Speaking of Ireland, and returning to the EP, “Empire Now” is a much, much more serious track than “Too Sweet.” It seems to be referring to a hundred years of independence for Ireland. Is it right that, when you were choosing songs for “Unreal Unearth,” “Empire Now” was in the running to reflect the circle of violence?

Yeah, unfortunately there were just a lot of songs that could have made the circle of violence. And then I also considered “Empire Now” for the circle of greed; of course, it could possibly make sense in there. But either way, yeah, it was sort of pushed out towards the EP.

We’ve had a hundred years of independence, so the song is just really asking the question, of all of the problems from before the revolution, how those still linger. So it’s just sort of to reckon with the promise of Ireland’s 1916 revolutionary dream. Again, it’s really macabre, and it imagines this world where the dead are rising, and we’re having to contend with people spinning in their graves at such a rate that it’s destabilizing the ground. And the jokey solution is to just hook them up to generators and continue on and co-opt them in a new way to power the world we’re moving towards.

There’s so much turmoil in the world right now that, seeing you on tour last year, it felt like people were looking to you for the sense of a balm. Some people are just coming to shows for escapism, of course, but at the same time, you probably have a pretty soulful audience that is empathetic to troubled times. In some shows, you will say something that tries to speak to the times or the mood.

And then just to mention the fourth song on the EP, on the lighter side… “Fare Well” catalogs a list of things that you would not “fare well” in facing if it were your lot in life. In one of the verses, it’s “I wouldn’t fare well / A whale-swimmin’-up-Sumida-Gawa wouldn’t fare well / Critic-hopin’-to-be-remembered wouldn’t fare well…” I’m can’t speak to the Sumida Gawa reference, but I had to laugh at the reference to critics.

Sumita Gawa is a river in Tokyo. I guess the joke of that song is all the things that we do to try and feel good, or all the things that we attempt to do that are impossible, where ultimately they are futile attempts. And forgive me, I do play with voices that are cynical, in different ways — some more hopeful, some more cynical. “I’d are as well as a hedgehog would fare under a van wheel” is how I would fare in trying to feel good, and trying to come out of something feeling better. A whale swimming up Sumida Gawa wouldn’t fare well, and…  forgive me for the line “a critic hoping to be remembered” wouldn’t fare well.

I think the critics of the world speak can take it, so it’s OK. Not to speak for all of them. But It’s an amusing line.

Thank you. A bit of fun.

Going back on tour this year, you could have stopped after one year, but you’re coming back to satisfy demand. Yet most of the shows quickly sold out, so you could probably come back around with the same tour in 2025 and still not really satisfy the demand.

Yeah, I just feel blessed. I am a little bit taken by surprise that, yeah, there’s this groundswell of people either switching onto the music or just enjoying it. I feel really, really lucky that we get to do these extra shows, and also that there’s new music that people are enjoying so much to bring into these shows. I’m looking forward to this year — I’m just delighted.

Here Are the Lyrics to Kendrick Lamar's "Meet the Grahams"

On "Meet the Grahams," Lamar delivers brutal verses to Drake, his son Adonis, his alleged daughter, and his parents, Dennis and Sandi Graham.

Kendrick Lamar served Drake a third round of smoke on "Meet the Grahams," the latest release in this explosive rap war.

The song plays as a diss track and exposé. Lamar sends piercing messages to Drake, his son Adonis , his alleged daughter, and his parents, Dennis and Sandi Graham . K. Dot pulls a Pusha T on "Meet the Grahams," alleging that Drake has been hiding an illegitimate daughter .

Lamar also accuses the 6 God of criminal sexual activity, and claims that Drake will soon face investigation. These allegations mirror similar claims against Sean 'Diddy' Combs , who was raided by police last month .

"Meet the Grahams" dropped on Friday night (May 3), less than an hour after Drake issued "Family Matters," where Drake went after Lamar, ASAP Rocky , Pharrell Williams , Rick Ross , The Weeknd , and more. For some, the timing, title, and content of Lamar’s lethal track seems to confirm that the OVO team has opps on the inside leaking to the Compton rapper.

kendrick having a whole song structured around talking to drake’s family members one by one 30 minutes after drake released a song called “family matters” feels like bonafide proof that kendrick really does have a mole in drake’s inner circle lol this whole shit is nuts — Shea Serrano (@SheaSerrano) May 4, 2024

Read the unofficial lyrics to “Meet the Grahams” below.

[Verse 1] Dear Adonis I'm sorry that that man is your father, let me be honest It takes a man to be a man, your dad is not responsive I look at him and wish your grandpa woulda wore a condom I'm sorry that you gotta grow up and then stand behind him Life is hard, I know, the challenge is always gon' beat us home Sometimes our parents make mistakes that affect us until we grown And you're a good kid that need good leadership Let me be your mentor since your daddy don't teach you shit Never let a man piss on your leg, son Either you die right there or pop that man in the head, son Never fall in the escort business, that's bad religion Please remember, you could be a bitch even if you got bitches Never code-switch, whether right or wrong, you a Black man Even if it don't benefit your goals, do some push-ups, get some discipline Don't cut them corners like your daddy did, fuck what Ozempic did Don't pay to play with them Brazilians, get a gym membership Understand, no throwin' rocks and hidin' hands, that's law Don't be ashamed 'bout who you wit', that's how he treat your moms Don't have a kid to hide a kid to hide again, be sure Five percent will comprehend, but ninety-five is lost Be proud of who you are, your strength come from within Lotta superstars that's real, but your daddy ain't one of them And you nothing like him, you'll carry yourself as king Can't understand me right now, just play this when you eighteen [Verse 2] Dear Sandra Your son got some habits, I hope you don't undermine them Especially with all the girls that's hurt inside this climate You a woman, so you know how it feels to be in alignment With emotion, hopin' a man can see you and not be blinded Dear Dennis, you gave birth to a master manipulator Even usin' you to prove who he is is a huge favor I think you should ask for more paper, and more paper And more, uh, more paper I'm blamin' you for all his gamblin' addictions Psychopath intuition, the man that like to play victim You raised a horrible fuckin' person, the nerve of you, Dennis Sandra, sit down, what I'm about to say is heavy, now listen Mm-mm, your son's a sick man with sick thoughts, I think n***as like him should die Him and Weinstein should get fucked up in a cell for the rest they life He hates Black women, hypersexualizes 'em with kinks of a nympho fetish Grew facial hair because he understood bein' a beard just fit him better He got sex offenders on ho-VO that he keep on a monthly allowance A child should never be compromised and he keepin' his child around them And we gotta raise our daughters knowin' there's predators like him lurkin' Fuck a rap battle, he should die so all of these women can live with a purpose I been in this industry twelve years, I'ma tell y'all one lil' secret It's some weird shit goin' on and some of these artists be here to police it They be streamlinin' victims all inside of they home and callin' 'em Tinder Then leak videos of themselves to further push their agendas To any woman that be playin' his music, know that you're playin' your sister Or better, you're sellin' your niece, to the weirdos, not the good ones Katt Williams said, "Get you the truth," so I'ma get mines The Embassy 'bout to get raided, too, it's only a matter of time Ayy, LeBron, keep the family away, hey, Curry, keep the family away To anybody that embody the love for they kids, keep the family away They lookin' at you too if you standin' by him, keep the family away I'm lookin' to shoot through any pervert that lives, keep the family safe [Verse 3] Dear baby girl I'm sorry that your father not active inside your world He don't commit to much but his music, yeah, that's for sure He a narcissist, misogynist, livin' inside his songs Try destroy families rather than takin' care of his own Should be teachin' you time tables or watchin' 'Frozen' with you Or at your eleventh birthday, singin' poems with you Instead, he be in Turks, payin' for sex and poppin' Percs, examples that you don't deserve I wanna tell you that you're loved, you're brave, you're kind You got a gift to change the world, and could change your father's mind 'Cause our children is the future, but he lives inside confusion Money's always been illusion, but that's the life he's used to His father prolly didn't claim him neither History do repeats itself, sometimes it don't need a reason But I would like to say it's not your fault that he's hidin' another child Give him grace, this the reason I made 'Mr. Morale' So our babies like you can cope later Give you some confidence to go through somethin', it's hope later I never wanna hear you chase a man 'cause his failed behavior Sittin' in the club with sugar daddies for validation You need to know that love is eternity and trumps all pain I'll tell you who your father is, just play this song when it rains Yes, he's a hitmaker, songwriter, superstar, right And a fuckin' deadbeat that should never say "more life" Meet the Grahams [Verse 4] Dear Aubrey I know you probably thinkin' I wanted to crash your party But truthfully, I don't have a hatin' bone in my body This supposed to be a good exhibition within the game But you fucked up the moment you called out my family's name Why you had to stoop so low to discredit some decent people? Guess integrity is lost when the metaphors doesn't reach you And I like to understand 'cause your house was never a home Thirty-seven, but you showin' up as a seven-year-old You got gamblin' problems, drinkin' problems, pill-poppin' and spendin' problems Bad with money, whorehouse Solicitin' women problems, therapy's a lovely start But I suggest some ayahuasca, strip the ego from the bottom I try to empathize with you 'cause I know that you ain't been through nothin' Crave entitlement, but wanna be liked so bad that it's puzzlin' No dominance, let's recap moments when you didn't fit in No secret handshakes with your friend No cultural cachet to binge, just disrespectin' your mother Identity's on the fence, don't know which family will love ya The skin that you livin' in is compromised in personas Can't channel your masculine even when standin' next to a woman You a body shamer, you gon' hide them baby mamas, ain't ya? You embarrassed of 'em, that's not right, that ain't how mama raised us Take that mask off, I wanna see what's under them achievements Why believe you? You never gave us nothin' to believe in 'Cause you lied about religious views, you lied about your surgery You lied about your accent and your past tense, all is perjury You lied about your ghostwriters, you lied about your crew members They all pussy, you lied on 'em, I know they all got you in 'em You lied about your son, you lied about your daughter, huh You lied about them other kids that's out there hopin' that you come You lied about the only artist that can offer you some help Fuck a rap battle, this a long life battle with yourself

I'm a luxury hotel manager - and these are the do's and don'ts of hotel freebies, from the ones you can take, to the items you MUST leave in the room

  • The rules are revealed by Simon Steele, GM at Armathwaite Hall
  • He also reveals the strangest items guests have taken
  • What's YOUR favourite hotel-room amenity? Vote in our poll...
  • READ MORE:  You've been eating in restaurants all wrong! Here's why...

You arrive at your luxury hotel for a much-needed getaway and settle into your gorgeously comfortable room.

You admire your hotelier’s attention to detail and the beautiful amenities you have been provided with.

As you lay back and relax in your cloud-like robe, you think about how wonderful it would be to experience this softness and comfort at home. Surely your robe is complimentary and you can take it home, right?

Simon Steele, General Manager at luxury Lake District hotel Armathwaite Hall , reveals the answer, plus the rules around other hotel freebies. He also divulges the strangest items that guests have tried to take.

You can take: toiletries

Feel guilty for leaving your hotel with dinky bottles of shampoo, conditioner or body lotion in your luggage?

There’s no need to.

Simon comments: ‘Mini disposable toiletries are of course OK to take from your luxury hotels. In fact, we encourage you to try them out or take them home and enjoy them – quality hotels usually offer quality products!’

Lorela Movileanu, Spa Manager at Armathwaite Hall, offers a little extra insight into how your toiletries are selected at luxury hotels.

She says: ‘We offer Temple Spa miniatures in our hotel rooms. It is a little touch of luxury and lets our guests know that they are only experiencing the best. If you love your toiletry freebies in your room, we also offer Temple Spa goodies in our spa, so you can stock up on full-sized products before you leave!’

You can take: slippers

Want to pop those hotel slippers in your suitcase? That’s toe-tally fine.

Simon comments: ‘Our slippers mould perfectly to your foot for that unrivalled comfort, so we do not reuse them.’

Do not take: robes and towels

Bathrobes and towels are commonly stolen from hotel rooms, but according to Simon, they are off-limits.

He says: ‘We procure only the softest and finest-made bathrobes for our guests. They add to that luxurious, AA Red Star hotel experience that we offer, but that means they cannot be taken home.’

What if you are looking to get your own hotel-style robe to recreate your luxury experience at home? Simon says: ‘Our luxury robes offer a superior level of comfort that’s almost indescribable. They’re perfect for post-shower lounging, and you’ll be pleased to know that they can be purchased!

‘Our robes are also embroidered with our hotel initials, AHH, so that you can remember your special stay with us.’

Do not take: electricals

Most hotel rooms will come with basic amenities, including kettles and hairdryers. But the more upmarket your accommodation, the higher your expectations – and the better the facilities.

You can expect anything from coffee-makers to luxury hair tools in boutique hotels – but be sure to leave them behind.

Simon says: ‘We know that in-room amenities are essential for our guests. But these must stay in our rooms so all our guests can enjoy these extra-special touches.’

Simon adds: ‘In the past, we have had guests try to take lightbulbs and remote controls. Whilst these items are small and portable, they are not easily replaceable – so please consider future guests and leave them where they are.’

Bonus pro tip: no stealing ornaments

So, what is the most unusual item a guest has tried to take from Armathwaite Hall?

‘A bulldog ornament, called Winston, from our reception area,’ laughs Simon. ‘We could not believe what we were seeing! It is very unusual for guests to try to take items from outside of the room.’

Does that mean Winston was never to be seen again?

Simon adds: ‘Not to worry, Winston is safely back in his home. We spoke to the overzealous wedding guest, where we established that there was a clear misunderstanding – so he is back welcoming our new customers arriving in reception!’

Review: Babbel helps users learn local languages for business travel and beyond Back to video

Planning for business travel is a lot more involved than booking flights and packing your laptop — you also need to prepare yourself for optimal communication with partners, colleagues and locals. Recently, I was in Florida and was surprised by how many people spoke Spanish. Now, I know that figure is nearly a quarter of their population.

With an upcoming trip to Quebec on my calendar, and knowing that almost everyone there knows at least a little French, I decided to take the time to study some of the language beforehand. I tested out Babbel and this was my experience.

What: Sale on Babbel When: Now until May 12 Price: $206 (down from $822) Where to buy: Babbel Language Learning: Lifetime Subscription

The first few steps in my language-learning journey

The reason I decided on a Babbel in the first place was that I’d heard so much about this particular app online and through friends. Trying to find free language resources wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, and I didn’t want to commit to expensive, in-person courses.

Babbel also made it easy to set up realistic goals. Becoming fluent in French before my upcoming trip didn’t feel like a realistic goal. Now that I have a lifetime subscription, I may want to learn other languages in the future or brush up on my French. I selected my reason for learning, my desired proficiency and my target deadline, then the app set a weekly goal for me.

Study a broad range of topics, useful for travel and beyond

In just the first course, I’ve already learned how to greet people and say goodbye, introduce myself, share where I’m from and which languages I speak, order at restaurants and ask how much something costs, talk about my profession and say my age and ask for contact details.

Babbel does a great job in explaining the informal and formal differences between different pronouns and terms. For instance, I already know that I should address clients and those I don’t know with “Bonjour!” and my familiar colleagues with “Salut!”.

Hands-on practice for real-world situations

Each lesson also prompts me to practice my pronunciation , usually after seeing and hearing a new term. This remedies a common concern with learning a language through an app — Babbel calls it speech-recognition technology.

While the software will let you know if you completely mispronounce a word, it’s not foolproof. One of my favourite features is that it motivates you to actually say the words out loud because that’s what you’ll be doing in the real world.

There is also an entire course titled ‘Listening and Speaking’ where you can sharpen more of those conversational skills. After taking a few lessons, these tend to focus on vowels and consonants.

Review sessions built for long-term goals

A big concern I had, with my Quebec trip still being quite a few months out, is that I would forget a lot of what I learned if I started now. But that’s no real reason to put aside language-learning goals and the app had a way of accounting for this.

Babbel keeps track of each new term you learn and how many times it’s been reviewed, ensuring that you only see it as often as you need. You even get to choose the review method between flashcards, writing, listening, speaking, or playing a mini-game.

The review sessions have their strengths and weaknesses. A huge advantage is that their system seems to work, though a disadvantage is that if you take a break from the platform, it doesn’t seem to factor that in and you may get some difficult prompts in the mix.

Take advantage of the Babbel sale

While I chose to study French, Babbel has 13 other languages to choose from and you can easily switch between them at any time. Whether you’re u sing it for business or pleasure travel, or simply to pick up a new and marketable skill, learning a new language is a fun and rewarding experience.

I recommend Babbel for anyone looking to learn a new language for travel. A lifetime subscription is currently on sale for $206 (down from $822) until May 12.

Prices subject to change.

Please give us a complete sentence and tell us what the context is, i.e. what is the situation you are using your sentence in? Thank you.

I'm just talking about my experience to a friend In this case, Do I say, I took a tour of Britain or I took the tour of Britain??

You would normally say, I took a tour of Britain. You would only "take the tour of Britain" if it were a specific tour, e.g. one that everyone traditionally takes and that is generally known, or a tour called "Tour of Britain."

If you earn significantly more or less than your partner, how do you split payments for things like housing, food, household essentials, entertainment and holidays?

Do you both pay equally, do you split costs according to income, or do you have another method?

Wetherspoons has revealed it is seeing soaring demand for Guinness among younger drinkers.

The Irish stout has become "fashionable" among younger generations, according to JD Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin, who has also seen a rise in ale sales.

Wetherspoons, which runs 809 pubs across the UK, said like-for-like sales increased 5.2% over the 13 weeks to 28 April compared with a year earlier, with total sales up 3.3%.

The company has now said it expects annual profits to be "towards the top of market expectations".

Toyota has warned it faces an impending drop in income after it was forced to cut down production to address a safety scandal.

The carmaker, which is the world's largest by sales, had a record net profit of 4.94trn yen (£25.5bn) in the year to March.

But earlier this year it became embroiled in a scandal after it emerged one of its subsidiaries had cheated on safety tests.

The Japanese government subsequently ordered the supplier, Daihatsu Motor Co, to halt production of its entire line-up.

Toyota has now warned net income will fall 27.8% this financial year to 3.57trn yen because of investments.

Morrisons has acquired 38 convenience stores and six fuel forecourts in the Channel Islands.

They are located on the islands of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney.

The supermarket acquired the stores from its long-time partner SandpiperCI.

More than 500 employees from Sandpiper CI will be transferred across.

Underwhelming box office performances have signalled cinemagoers might be starting to tire of superhero films.

And now Disney has announced it will cut its output of Marvel content, moving to two television series and three films per year.

The company's chief executive, Bob Iger, said Disney would "reduce output and focus more on quality" particularly when it came to Marvel.

Some 33 Marvel films have been released since 2008, but recent releases such as The Marvels and the latest Ant-Man film have underperformed.

The Marvels was the lowest grossing film in the franchise's history, generating just £165m - less than its budget of £219m.

At the same time, Disney Plus revealed worse-than-expected subscriber numbers and a slowdown in its traditional broadcast television business.

Its shares dropped 8.5% in morning trading.

Brighton Palace Pier is introducing a £1 admission fee.

It has been implemented to cover the rising costs of maintaining, repairing and operating the 125-year-old structure, The Brighton Pier Group said.

The group said in the last five years the annual cost had risen to £11.6m.

The admission fee will come into force from 25 May and will apply weekends in June and then the whole of July and August.

It will not apply to locals or children under two.

Anne Ackord, chief executive of Brighton Palace Pier, said: "We have, to date, been able to offset and absorb these costs but we have now reached the point where, in our view, it is sensible to implement a small admission charge."

She said the fee would help the pier be "with us for generations to come".

Jaguar Land Rover is offering £150 a month towards the cost of insurance to help drivers cope with rising premiums.

The company announced the initiative will help those who own cars covered under its in-house insurance division that are registered between 1 May 2023 and 30 September 2023.

In order for it to apply, the vehicle cannot be worth more than £150,000.

If your car is eligible, Jaguar Land Rover has said it will make the contribution for up to three years.

It comes after the company launched Land Rover Insurance in October after reports suggested car thefts were pushing up the costs offered by mainstream providers.

"Customers of luxury cars and other luxury items are experiencing an increase in thefts due to organised criminal activity in the UK," a spokesperson said at the time.

"The desirability of our luxury vehicles, coupled with concerns around thefts, has recently led to challenges in obtaining insurance cover for some clients."

An airline entirely dedicated to dogs is arriving in the UK next month - but it will cost you more than £6,000 for you and your pet to enjoy it.

Bark Airlines will start by flying two routes - from London to New York and New York to LA. But it is hoping to add more to its roster soon.

During the flights, your pooch will be given free access to roam the plane and will be provided with treats, as well as a beverage of their choice during ascent and descent to help with the change in pressure.

On its website, Bark Airlines brags about being the first of its kind due to it being built "from the ground up" for dogs.

The experience is very high end, with a concierge greeting you and your dog before the flight, a free pass through security and only 10 people per flight.

The cabin also comes prepped with pheromones, music and lavender scented towels to help keep the beloved pets calm.

A "just in case" bag is provided too, filled with leashes, poo bags and snacks.

However, it comes with a hefty price tag of £6,400 for a one way ticket and under-18s are not allowed on board.

Money struggles are forcing more than half of new mothers to return to work earlier than planned, according to a survey.

Weekly statutory maternity pay and maternity allowance are now worth less than half the £400.40 minimum wage for a working week.

Maternity Action, which spoke to more than 1,000 new mothers, found 62% rely on credit cards or borrowing from friends when pregnant or on maternity leave.

Meanwhile, 59% have either returned or are planning to return to work earlier than preferred after the birth because of money worries.

At least one mother described how it would take "years" for her to recover financially from the cost of maternity leave.

Just 13% of women on maternity leave benefit from employers' occupational maternity pay schemes, down from 44% in 2008, according to government research.

Some are unable to claim statutory maternity pay due to self-employment.

Ros Bragg, director of Maternity Action, said: "The low levels of maternity pay and benefits come as a huge shock to many trying to start families.

"We've heard from women skipping meals, relying on food parcels and becoming anaemic because they can't buy healthy food."

The French capital is about to raise the cost of public transport - impacting any city-breakers or those heading to the Paris Olympics this summer.

Metro ticket prices will rise by more than 85% from 20 July, jumping from €2.15 (£1.85) for a single ticket to €4 (£3.43).

The price for a city bus ticket will double from €2.50 (£2.15) to €5 (£4.29).

It comes into force six days before the start of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and will remain in place until 8 September.

The price of transport passes will stay the same, meaning regular travellers such as residents should be unaffected.

To avoid the extra cost, you could buy a weekly travel pass.

These are priced at €30.75 (£26.39) for zones 1 to 5 while a Navigo Day Pass costs €8.65 (£7.42) to travel across two zones.

Tourists can also buy a Paris Pass which is aimed at people travelling for the Olympics and Paralympics.

The banking group has said some of its branches will close starting in September and continuing until May next year.

Job cuts will be in the fraud operations department of the bank, central operations and staff who work at the branches earmarked for closure.

After this round of closures, TSB will have 175 branches across the UK.

It announced earlier this year it would make cost-saving plans including cutting jobs and closing branches.

Trade union Unite said the decision by the UK high street lender was a "grave mistake".

"The decision to close a branch is never taken lightly, but our customers are now doing most of their banking digitally and we need to move to a better balance of digital and face-to-face services," a spokesperson for TSB said.

"We remain committed to a national branch network and through innovation and integration with video, telephone, digital, branch and other face-to-face services TSB customers have more ways to bank with us than ever before."

A new savings account is offering customers a rate of 5.2% AER - making it a market leader.

Raisin UK has partnered with Al Rayan Bank to offer the one-year Fixed-Term Deposit account.

Those who deposit £1,000 can expect to have £1,052.00 in their account by the end of the year.

The minimum deposit is £1,000, while the maximum is £85,000.

Customers will not be able to withdraw from the account for the year.

It is operated under Shariah principles, meaning interest cannot be earned but some of the profit the bank earns will be returned to you - meaning you can grow your savings without earning interest.

Anna Bowes, co-founder of Savings Champion , tells the Money blog...

"It's good to see that although the markets are expecting the base rate to fall in the near future, the anticipated date for this keeps being pushed back, and this seems to have stimulated a little bit of competition among some savings providers – in particular fixed-term bonds - pushing rates upwards.

"This latest increase from Al Rayan Bank, available both directly and via the Raisin UK cash platform, is exactly what we like to see, and hopefully it will create a little more competition from other providers - pushing rates further in the right direction."

Anna points out this rate can be beaten with shorter fixes but in that instance "you'll need to find another home for your money on maturity, so fixing for a bit longer could actually realise more of a return in the end".
