BCCI Announces India T20I squad for West Indies Tour 2023

As India’s West Indies Tour is scheduled to happen between July 12 and August 13, India T20I squad for West Indies Tour 2023 has been announced by BCCI.

On Wednesday, BCCI announced the T20I squad for the upcoming West Indies series which includes Mumbai Indians batsman Tilak Varma who received his maiden call-up in the Indian team. However, senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are not included in the squad.

The squad will be led by Hardik Pandya with Suryakumar Yadav as his deputy. The squad includes Leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi who gives a comeback to the team.s

On the other hand, KKR’s left-handed batsman Rinku Singh had missed out, not having a slot in the same position, covering with Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Sanju Samson in the middle order.

Yashavi Jaswal is about to make a debut in the Test Series of the West Indies tour next week, also included in the T20I squad after an impressive IPL.

Players To Earn Maiden Callup

After a terrific start in the Mumbai Indians team joining them in 2022, Tilak Varma had played 25 matches up to date in his IPL career and has scored a total of 740 runs, with an average of 38.95. It includes three half-centuries, with his highest IPL score of 84 runs.

Tilak has struck 55 fours and 39 sixes in his IPL career. He played his last IPL match against Gujarat at Narendra Modi Stadium, scoring 43 runs off 14 balls. He was auctioned for INR 1.70 crores by Mumbai Indians in the IPL auction 2023 .

Jaiswal has an average of 80.21 in 15 games, scoring 1845 runs with nine centuries and two half-centuries. Jaiswal also has an average of 53.96 in 32 List A games, becoming the youngest double-centurion in the format when he scored 203 runs off just 154 balls for Mumbai in January 2019, scoring against Jharkhand at the age of 17.

Yashasvi Jaiswal made his debut in 2020, but the season 2023 turned out to be the most important aspect in deciding his career.  Only playing 14 matches for Rajasthan Royals, the batter scored 625 runs at a superb strike of 163.61. His average in the season was around 48.08.

He scored a century but should have been considered as two due to his score of 98 off just 47 balls in his side Rajasthan Royals’ nine-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders. Jaiswal now has the record for the fastest IPL 50s in that match and came within a ball of equalling Yuvraj Singh’s record of the fastest fifty overall in T20 cricket.

India will make its much-awaited return to the field after the finals of the World Test Championship 2023. The match will kick off the West Indies Series with Two-Test match series. Despite losing the WTC , the selectors have only added young players giving a maiden Test call-up.

As the players have reached the host’s ground, they are about to start the preparations soon. With its current performance, West Indies would not be much of a challenge for Team India and they are expected to win Test and ODI with ease. But West Indies shall put some competition in the T20I series against India.

India Tour Of West Indies Squad Announcement Highlights:  The Ajit Agarkar-led senior men’s selection committee on Wednesday picked India’s squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies. The likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma have received maiden call-ups while young batter from Aligarh Rinku Singh has been overlooked. The team will be led by Hardik Pandya with Suryakumar Yadav as his deputy.

A day after the appointment of Ajit Agarakar as Team India’s chief selector, the BCCI is set to announce the squad for the 5-match T20I series against the West Indies in August. According to media reports, the likes of Rinku Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Tilak Varma are likely to be included following their impeccable performance in the recently concluded IPL 2023. The seniors will no longer be a part of the team which will be led by Hardik Pandya. The India tour of the West Indies starts July 12 with a couple of Test matches followed by 3 ODIs. After the conclusion of the 50-over games, the two teams will compete with each other in the shortest format of the game.

The T20 series will begin on August 4, with the first game scheduled to be played in Trinidad. The second and third face-offs will be held in Guyana on August 6 and August 8. After the first three matches, the two teams will move to the United States of America for the leftover matches. The 4 th and 5th T20Is will be played in Florida on August 12 and 13.

If the media reports are to be believed then the Indian T20 squad won’t have the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and other senior names. It has been learned that all-rounder Hardik Pandya will lead the side which will comprise a bunch of youngsters.

The reports have also stated that the likes of Rinku Sing and Tilak Varma are likely to get maiden calls following their impeccable performance in the recently concluded IPL 2023. Ruturaj Gaikwad’s comeback and Yashasvi Jaiswal’s inclusions also look imminent. Meanwhile, Mohit Sharma’s name is also doing rounds after ending the IPL 2023 with 27 wickets.

Kolkata Knight Riders’ star Rinku Singh is in line for getting his maiden T20I call-up. The Aligarh batter scored 474 runs in 14 games at a staggering strike rate of 149.52 and his efforts are likely to pay off.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has already received a maiden Test call-up, was also one of the top performers of the IPL 2023. He ended the season as the highest run-getter of the Rajasthan Royals, scoring 625 runs in 14 games.

The CAC unanimously selected the former cricketer on Tuesday after interviewing several applicants for the position of one selector.

Agarkar represented the country in 26 Tests, 191 ODIs, and four T20Is, in addition to playing 110 first-class, 270 List A, and 62 T20 matches. As a former fast bowler, he was part of India’s victorious squad in the inaugural T20 World Cup held in South Africa in 2007.

The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) a few days back unveiled the schedule of India’s multi-format series against West Indies that commences from July 12 and features two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.

As per the schedule released by BCCI, the tour will start with the red-ball games, followed by 50-over matches and end with the T20I series . However, the Indian board is yet to announce the teams for the all-format visit.

Considering the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and the performances put up by the young players in the event, the selectors will surely have a tough time finalizing the T20I squad of the Indian team.

Although there is still a month and a half to go for the shortest format matches against the Caribbean side, the former India star spinner Harbhajan Singh has revealed his preferred India T20I team for the upcoming West Indies tour.

Harbhajan shared the 15-member squad in a video on his official YouTube channel and went with a young team for the West Indies challenge. The veteran Punjab cricketer picked the IPL 2023 highest run-scorer Shubman Gill , Rajasthan Royals (RR) sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal , Mumbai Indians (MI) player Ishan Kishan and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Ruturaj Gaikwaid as his opening options in the team. Meanwhile, the captain’s post in Harbhajan’s squad was retained by India’s regular T20I skipper Hardik Pandya .

Other significant inclusions in Bhajji’s team comprised Akash Madhwal , Harshit Rana , Jitesh Sharma , Tilak Varma and Rinku Singh . Notably, the former spinner picked as many as six uncapped players in his team based on their performances in the 16th edition of the IPL.

The BCCI on Friday, declared the squads for the West Indies tour where the Indian team will be playing two Tests, three One-Day-Internationals (ODIs), and a five-match T20 International series, starting from July 12. Young guns like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and pacer Mukesh Kumar have been added to India's Test side for the very first time while veteran players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Mohammed Shami have been dropped.

Ajinkya Rahane, who made a comeback to the Test team for the World Test Championship final, has been named the vice-captain, while Navdeep Saini is also back in the squad. While Sanju Samson and Jaydev Unadkat have been included in the 50-over squad of the Indian team.

“The Men’s Selection Committee has picked India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series and three ODIs against the West Indies. India are also scheduled to play five T20Is and the squad for the same will be announced later,” BCCI said in a release.

Jaiswal had a great IPL 2023 for Rajasthan Royals and he was on the selector's radar after scoring 625 runs at a strike rate of 163. The Mumbai cricketer holds an average of 80.21 in 15 matches with 9 centuries and a highest score of 265.

India Squad For West Indies Test Tour: Indian Cricket Team Player List

India squad for West Indies Test tour comprises a grand total of 16 cricketers – one more than what was the case during ICC World Test Championship final against Australia last month. The addition means that India have an additional specialist batter with them for a two-match series in the Caribbean.

Having represented India in 10 white-ball matches, batter Ruturaj Gaikwad is part of the Test squad for the first time. Much like the Maharashtra batter, there’s also a maiden Test call-up for Bengal pacer Mukesh Kumar. Batter Yashasvi Jaiswal , on the contrary, has received a made it to the national squad for the first time in his career.

Fast bowler Navdeep Saini , meanwhile, has been recalled into the squad as a 16th member a couple of years after he played the last of his 21 international matches across all the three formats. Just one-match into his comeback stint, Ajinkya Rahane has been once again promoted to being the vice-captain of the Indian Test squad.

The aforementioned four names have found a spot in the Indian squad in place of batter Cheteshwar Pujara and fast bowlers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav .

If not for batter Shubman Gill dropping down to No. 3, the development is certain of India fielding a whole new batter at a crucial position in Test cricket. Furthermore, Indian fans should also brace themselves for witnessing players making their Test debuts under Rohit Sharma on this tour.

Has Cheteshwar Pujara Been Dropped?

Yes. Even at the cost of sounding debatable, WTC final debacle has made Pujara one of the two players who have been dropped as a ramification. While it is true that the 35-year old player hadn’t performed up to the mark in his second tenure as India’s No. 3, other non-performers retaining their spots has it in it for his fans to label him as a scapegoat.

That said, Pujara, who operates like a workhorse, is back to putting in the hard yards in domestic cricket. For the unversed, the right-handed batter scored a sincerely hardworking 133 (278) for West Zone in the second innings of the recently concluded first Duleep Trophy semi-final against Central Zone.

Finding form ahead of T20 World Cup 2024: Stars showing wares at IPL

IPL 2024 has seen a number of world-class performers showcase the best of their game, as India's domestic stars make a final case for the T20 World Cup squad selection.

With the global tournament less than two months away, a look at how IPL form could translate in the USA and the Caribbean.

Domestic run machines dominate as overseas best find their feet

A man held to lofty standards, Virat Kohli's century against Rajasthan Royals was met with some for denunciation being too slow. Finishing with 113* (72) in a score of 183/3, Kohli was bettered by Jos Buttler’s 100* (58), as the Englishman’s side claimed bragging rights.

Kohli also made a 59-ball 83* against the Kolkata Knight Riders, though it was his 49-ball 77 in a successful chase against the Punjab Kings that underlined his uncanny ability to pace his team’s chase.

Most runs in a single edition of the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Domestic players currently hold every spot in top five to this point, with former India U19 international Riyan Parag racing to 261 runs at a strike rate of 158.18 in his first five knocks, unbeaten in two. Shubman Gill has again shown his quality with 255 runs at a strike rate of 151.78 in five knocks, while Sai Sudharsan , who has three ODIs to his name, has 226 runs across six innings.

It hasn’t quite worked out for Sanju Samson so far in international cricket, but the Rajasthan Royals mainstay has again showed his quality, making three scores of over fifty to begin the campaign.

For the internationals at the tournament, it’s South African fans that will have some cautious optimism, with the likes of Heinrich Klaasen (186 runs at 193.75 strike rate) and Tristan Stubbs (174 runs at 193.33 strike rate) making early headlines.

Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram meanwhile both boast half-centuries at the tournament, while Faf du Plessis , after throwing his name up for a comeback, has had a slower start to his 2024 campaign.

West Indies’ Nicholas Pooran meanwhile has 178 runs to his name having only been dismissed once in the tournament, flying at a strike rate of 169.52. Australian pair Travis Head and David Warner have a fifty each to begin the campaign.

The South Africa opener was in fine form during the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Chahal leads the wicket race though fast bowlers do the chasing

As India look to find the right formula with the ball, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has proved his class once more, winning the race to 10 wickets in the 2024 edition, taking five matches to reach the mark. Not only has the 33-year-old conceded just 7.33 runs an over, but has claimed at least one victim in all five outings.

In good news for Bangladesh fans, the red and green flag has been flown high by Mustafizur Rahman at Chennai Super Kings, taking nine wickets at an economy of just eight across four outings. He leads fast bowlers at the tournament thus far, and should spearheard the Tigers' attack come June in the USA and the West Indies.

Having thundered onto the international scene at the last T20 World Cup in Australia, left-arm new ball specialist Arshdeep Singh is again peaking ahead of a global tournament, picking up a wicket every 14 deliveries for Punjab Kings.

Certain India selection Jasprit Bumrah's reputation has seen Mumbai Indians' opponents at least attempt to see off the world-class quick, who has conceded 6.12 runs per over across his first four matches, claiming five wickets.

The competition is the time to showcase quality, and the opportunity has been taken by a number of domestic quicks gunning for India squad spots. After his name was thrown around last season, Mohit Sharma has again impressed, picking up eight wickets in his first six outings for Gujarat Titans. Youngster Mayank Yadav has left an impression with his 150+ kph rockets too much for a number of batters.

As their batters overall impress, Proteas fans too will be upbeat on the success of their fast bowlers, namely Gerald Coetzee and Kagiso Rabada . A nominee for the ICC Men's Emerging Cricketer of the Year after a strong 2023 Cricket World Cup showing, Coetzee has again enjoyed his time in India with seven wickets in four outings, while Rabada has seven scalps in five matches.

Men of many talents triumph

Afghanistan's Rashid Khan will no doubt make headlines at the T20 World Cup, though it was his death-over exploits with the bat that had the IPL talking, hitting the winning runs off the last ball of the match for Gujarat Titans over the Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday (April 10). Rashid's 24 (11) and 1/18 earned him Player of the Match honours.

West Indies' Andre Russell could make a case as the IPL's best all-rounder so far in 2024, making quickfire scores of 41 (19) and 64 (25) to go with five wickets in four outings. Russell returned for the West Indies late last year for their home white-ball series of England, and looks poised to enjoy a home T20 World Cup. Sam Curran , a member to perform on that England tour, has claimed six wickets at the IPL, as well as scores of 63, 23 and 29 for the Punjab Kings.

Ravindra Jadeja lurks as another player to play a key role at the T20 World Cup, only dismissed once in his late-over batting blitzes (84 runs at 140 strike rate) to go with his four wickets, at an economy of 7.05.

West Indies 'A' set for a historic tour to Nepal

This historic series will be the first time a west indies team has toured nepal and will consist of five t20 matches, all of which will be played at the tribhuvan university international cricket ground in kirtipur.

Cricket West Indies and the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) are delighted to announce a T20 'A' Team tour as part of their respective ICC T20 World Cup 2024 preparations. This historic series will be the first time a West Indies team has toured Nepal and will consist of five T20 matches, all of which will be played at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur.

India’s squads for West Indies Tests and ODI series announced

The Men’s Selection Committee has picked India’s squad for the upcoming two-match Test series and three ODIs against the West Indies. India are also scheduled to play five T20Is and the squad for the same will be announced later.  

India’s Test squad:  Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), KS Bharat (wicket-keeper), Ishan Kishan (wicket-keeper), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Mohd. Siraj, Mukesh Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat, Navdeep Saini.

West Indies A to tour Nepal for five T20s in April-May

A West Indies 'A' side will tour Nepal for five T20 games as part of an A team tour in April-May to help both sides prepare for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA in June. It will be the first time that a West Indies side will tour Nepal.

All five games will be played at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur starting at 1pm local time, on April 27, 28, May 1, 2 and 4.

"This A-team tour is another indication of the importance we are placing on A-team cricket and a significant phase in our preparations for the T20 World Cup," Miles Bascombe, CWI director of cricket, said in a release. "It gives us a final opportunity to see many of the contenders for a place in the squad who are not participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Even for those players who do not make the final World Cup squad they will be a part of the reserve pool. A hallmark of the 2016 T20 World Cup campaign was the ability of reserve players to come in and have an immediate impact, so we must be ready for all eventualities. The only time West Indies and Nepal have played each other on the international stage was in an ODI during the World Cup Qualifiers in Harare in June last year. West Indies won that match by 101 runs after posting 339 for 7 with the help of centuries from Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran.

West Indies are slotted in Group C in the T20 World Cup, along with Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Uganda. There are four groups with five teams each which will play the round-robin stage before the top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eights, where the teams will be split into two groups of four. The semi-finals and final will end the tournament in June end.

Estwick named Nepal's bowling consultant

In other news, Roddy Estwick has been appointed the bowling consultant of Nepal. Estwick, a former Barbados fast bowler, had worked as assistant coach with the West Indies' senior men's and the Under-19 side previously.

New Zealand vs England: Itinerary for 2024 Test tour confirms matches in Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton

The release of the itinerary for England's Test tour of New Zealand later this year has confirmed Ben Stokes' side will play matches in Christchurch, Wellington and Hamilton.

Hagley Oval, the Cello Basin Reserve, and Seddon Park were on Tuesday confirmed as the venues for the three-match series.

Christchurch hosts the opening match from November 28-December 2, Wellington follows from December 6-10, before the series concludes in Hamilton from December 14-18.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink said there were already indications that the three matches against Brendon McCullum's team would attract the same sort of bumper attendances witnessed for the two home tests against Australia in February and March.

"In the past, there's often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers," he said.

"The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers."

England host West Indies in July before Sri Lanka visit across August and September during a summer where attention may be more focused on limited-overs cricket.

The T20 World Cup takes place in the West Indies and United States in June, while England also have a five-match ODI series against Australia in September.

England are currently last in the World Test Championship table following a 4-1 series defeat to India at the start of the year.

Having won just three of their 10 matches since the 2023-25 edition of the competition began, England require a major turnaround to have a chance of reaching next year's final at Lord's.
