Americans 'eager' to travel for Thanksgiving: Tips to avoid delays
The holiday travel season is about to commence now that Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Travel experts are encouraging those making any sort of journey to prepare for a crowded, and possibly chaotic, one.
"The Thanksgiving holiday week is shaping up to be busy," Hayley Berg, lead economist for Hopper, told USA TODAY. "Americans are eager to visit family and friends and make up for missed holidays due to the pandemic."
About 70% of Americans said they have travel plans to do just that, according to a recent report from the travel app. About half of American travelers said it's the first time they're traveling during the holiday season since the pandemic began.
Airlines have built back capacity to try to meet the anticipated demand on domestic routes, the report said. Both flight costs and seat capacity have increased this year. Nearly 25 million seats are scheduled to depart on flights from U.S. airports over the holiday week, a 6% increase from 2019.
After a summer of cancellations, delays and travel headaches, the experts at Hopper say this holiday season will be no different.

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE: Why booking flights on third-party websites can be risky
Read below to learn more about how to prepare for a Thanksgiving week of busy travel:
What will be the busiest days for travel during Thanksgiving week?
Sorry to all the Sunday travelers.
The Sunday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 20, is expected to see about 3.3 million people on the move. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 27, is when traveler numbers are predicted to peak at 3.4 million, as people return home from their trips.
Travelers should bank on the longest lines and potential delays on these peak days, Berg said.
The slowest day for travel will be on Thanksgiving day itself, although 2.24 million are still expected to be en route.
HOLIDAY SAVINGS: You could save up to 15% on winter airfare with these travel booking tips
What are the busiest airports dur ing Thanksgiving week?
According to the report, Atlanta (ATL), Dallas Fort-Worth (DFW) and Denver (DEN) are slated to be the busiest airports that week, with over one million travelers going through their concourses. The busiest time to fly at these airports will be in the morning.
"If you’re departing from one of these busiest airports, be sure to get to the airport early, expect longer lines and be prepared for potential delays and disruptions as the airports manage heavy holiday traffic," the report said.
Which airports are expected to have the worst delays?
This past summer, one in three flights on average were delayed at major airports, according to Hopper data. Delays might affect travelers over Thanksgiving week too.
"Additionally, travelers heading in and out of Newark Airport (EWR), Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Miami Airport (MIA) should expect delays, as those airports saw the highest levels of disruption over the Thanksgiving week last year and during this past summer," Berg said.
Newark had 39% of its flights disrupted this past summer, while DAL clocked in at 33% and MIA at 28%.
This past summer, Chicago Midway (MDW) and Houston (HOU) also had a significant amount of flight disruptions, so travelers flying in and out of these airports might want to be well-prepared.
How can I prepare for flight disruptions over Thanksgiving?
- Hopper recommends booking the first flight out if you can: "You're less likely to be impacted by delays from earlier in the day."
- Consider adding in a buffer day to your travel plans so you have some wiggle room to get to your destination.
- Arrive at the airport early. If you have time to spare, then you won't need to worry about long TSA lines (did you know there's an app to check TSA time estimates in real-time?), traffic or getting to your gate on time.
- April Cheng, travel expert for TravelChic World , said people should also consider weather when making travel plans — especially cold destinations that could be impacted by snow or ice.
Thanksgiving travel is back in a big way in 2022—Here’s how to avoid the worst of it, and that big storm brewing later this week
While Thanksgiving is a day of food and family, the journey to the dining room table can be a harrowing one, especially if you’re traveling with kids.
Your window to beat the crowds? That’s closed unfortunately. The Transportation Security Administration says the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving are often the busiest travel days of the year. And AAA predicts 54.6 million people will travel 50 miles or more this year.
While you’re unlikely to avoid crowds altogether, you might be able to avoid the worst of them with a little planning.
Thanksgiving travel by car
If you’re driving, as most people traveling this year are, the worst traffic will be Wednesday between 11:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. You can also expect crowded roads on Thursday between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. as people head to and from dinner.
For return trips, roads will be busiest between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., meaning an early start could save you some headaches.
If you’re traveling through some big cities, the worst times will vary, depending on your route. Here are estimates from AAA on the increases over typical traffic some cities will see:
Worst corridor: I-85 South; Clairmont Rd to MLK Jr Dr Worst day and time: Wednesday 1:30-3:30 p.m. Increase over typical traffic: 105%
Worst corridor: I-290 West, Morgan Street to Wolf Road Worst day: Wednesday 3-5 p.m. Increase over typical traffic: 99%
Worst corridor: I-10 West; Sjolander Rd to TX-330 Worst day and time : Wednesday 3:45-5:45 p.m. Increase over typical traffic: 81%
Los Angeles
Worst corridor: I-5 South, Colorado Street to Florence Avenue Worst day and time: Wednesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. Increase over typical traffic: 144%
Worst corridor: I-278 South, I-495 to 6th Ave Worst day and time: Wednesday 2:45-4:45 p.m. Increase over typical traffic: 158%
Thanksgiving travel by air
With staff shortages and, in many cases, a reduced number of flights , flying is going to be rough this year, though carriers are trying to avoid the troubles they faced this summer.
Flying on Thanksgiving morning could offer you some relief, but odds are if you’re flying for the holidays, you’ve already purchased your tickets, so advice about the best days and times won’t help a lot. There are still a few ways to make things easier, though.
- Get TSA Pre-Check, Clear or other security expediting service. You’ll pay (roughly) between $100 and $200, but it will help if the security lines are backed up and you’re running late.
- Make an advance “fast pass” reservation to head to the front of the security line. This free service isn’t available in all airports, but if you’re traveling through Charleston, SC; Dallas-fort Worth; JFK in New York; LAX in Los Angeles; Newark; Orlando; Phoenix; or Seattle, you can make an advance reservation to pass through TSA lines without a wait.
- Travel with only a carry-on if you can manage it. Luggage pick-up can add a considerable amount of time to your trip.
- Know what you can and can’t bring on board. Turkeys? Yes. Gravy? No.
A big storm could make getting home a bit challenging
The weather shouldn’t be a factor for most people when it comes to getting to your destination this year. Getting home, though, could be another matter.
Forecasters at AccuWeather warn that a developing storm system could cause headaches. It will start in the Northwest with rain and snow on Tuesday before pushing into the southern Plains on Thanksgiving, where it’s expected to intensify.
By the end of the holiday weekend, the eastern seaboard could be under some rough conditions, which would result in flight delays in Atlanta, New York and other hubs—and which will make driving more challenging, especially with more people on the road. Ultimately, it will all come down to how fast the storm moves.
Travelers , keep your fingers crossed for a quick moving one, which should let you avoid bad weather.

Thanksgiving Travel Predictions: Tips & What To Avoid During The 2022 Holidays
This November, many people will likely be traveling for the first time in several years. So let them do it properly!
If people have not already started planning for Thanksgiving vacations, it is imperative to begin planning now! Although traveling over the holidays might be expensive, it is possible to get affordable Thanksgiving flights with a little bit of research and flexibility. Even if travelers did not take action before the end of September, there is still hope, especially with the unusually high number of last-minute discounts we saw last year. Millions of Americans are traveling again with the recession of Covid-19, and the travel industry is already making a full recovery. This November, many individuals will likely be traveling for the first time in several years. For Thanksgiving, there are only a select few flights available, so it is crucial to reserve as soon as travelers can to get the greatest deals . Here are some tips to follow and mistakes to avoid when planning for the Thanksgiving holiday!

Follow These Tips When Traveling To Celebrate Thanksgiving Day
Choose the right day to travel.
Traveling offers education in and of itself, and travelers should not be hesitant to take their children out of school when required. A middle school student may feel stressed about missing class due to travel, but timing is key during Thanksgiving week. People should try to avoid hectic travel days, even if it means skipping a few days of class or work. Most travelers take flights on Wednesday and Sunday . Therefore, it is crucial to consider going on a Tuesday and returning on a Saturday. Thus, the entire family has a day to unwind and get back to normal before returning to school and work when they come home a day early.
Fly In The Early Morning Or Late Evening
The majority of travelers like to arrive at their destination in the late morning or early afternoon; therefore, the least busy and probably least expensive flights are those that depart in the late afternoon and evening. Plus, since cancelations and delays frequently have a domino effect, traveling early in the morning lowers the likelihood of arriving late.
Schedule Extra Time For The Airport
To accommodate for possible long waits, travelers are advised to show up at the airport three hours before their trip to avoid airport congestion. Arriving early at the airport will help travelers skip lengthy queues and enjoy perks like not having to remove their shoes at security checkpoints. At the airport, people can spend the rest of their time in the luxurious lounge, so it is advised to find out if their business credit card permits admission to an airport lounge.
Be Flexible With Your Destination
The Explore Map on Google Flights displays the locations that are the most affordable to visit from the travelers’ starting point within the chosen trip window. Thanksgiving will not be celebrated in many places outside of the United States, so now is a fantastic opportunity to squeeze in a cheap trip to Europe to a city like Amsterdam, Rome, Paris, or London. These destinations would be much costlier during the summer or around Christmas.

Consider Traveling Light
A family's baggage costs may mount up quickly. Should baggage be checked? Travelers should consider this. It is feasible to travel light. There is no reason why children who are of school age cannot manage a rolling carry-on. Travelers should pay attention to not over-packing the luggage and only bringing a few pairs of shoes. A solid rule of thumb is to wear the pair travelers are wearing on the aircraft and another pair just in case. Wherever people travel, supermarkets sell necessary items like shampoo, diapers, etc. When travelers get to their holiday destination, they can get what they need and utilize it before they leave.
Avoid These Mistakes To Enjoy Better Your Thanksgiving Vacations
Do not wait to make your reservations.
All the hotels and flights travelers are looking at are quickly filling up as the clock is ticking. If they have not already begun making reservations, they should do it now! They are running the risk of missing out on their preferred trip dates if they wait too long. If that is not motivation enough, they should bear in mind that many airlines begin raising prices around Halloween. That is one spooky prank travelers want to avoid experiencing at all costs!
Avoid Squeezing It In
Travelers should give themselves plenty of travel time whether they are taking a flight or a road trip for a holiday. Traveling on Thanksgiving Day, in particular, has its share of charms, including delays. There will be a lot of people in the airports, and there probably will be some traffic on the way. Therefore, travelers should consider these factors while planning their journey time to save unnecessary holiday stress.
Refrain From Being Unbending
Tourists will have a much easier and more joyful time this Thanksgiving Day if they can be flexible with their travel plans. Everyone wants to go as close to the event as possible, but being a bit more flexible with their plans can wind up saving them a lot of money. They will also have more time to spend with their loved ones while avoiding numerous delays and hassles.

This Thanksgiving, Full Planes to Go With Full Plates
With about 30 million travelers expected to jam U.S. airports this year and storms in the forecast, you may want to take an extra helping of patience, too.
By Steven Moity
A government shutdown won’t be disrupting travel plans this Thanksgiving after Congress agreed on Wednesday to a funding package that lasts through early next year. But clouds and crowds might make your trip a slog anyway.
The Transportation Security Administration expects about 30 million passengers to fly between this Friday and the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, an 11.5 percent increase over the same period last year.
The weather won’t make the Thanksgiving crush any easier. Weekend storms in New England and low clouds and rain on the California coast could cause some delays. And Monday through Wednesday morning, a strong cold front will move eastward, slowing operations at airline hubs like Houston and Chicago before soaking the East Coast, said Paul Pastelok, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.
If you haven’t booked your trip already, average airfare prices are slightly lower than they were in 2019, said Melanie Fish, head of public relations at Expedia Brands, and you can really save time and money if you fly on Thanksgiving Day.
“According to Expedia data, flying on Thanksgiving Day is 11 percent cheaper than average for the week of Thanksgiving, but here’s the real kicker — it’s almost half as busy compared to the day before Thanksgiving,” Ms. Fish said.
The four major New York City-area airports run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey are expecting 3.1 million passengers from this Monday through the Monday after Thanksgiving, up slightly from three million over the same period last year, said Seth Stein, spokesman for the Port Authority.
Those planning to crowd the streets of Manhattan — instead of the airports — for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade can expect the giant balloons to be flying high: The forecast calls for very little wind, Mr. Pastelok said, and the day will be sunny and chilly, with temperatures topping out in the mid-40s.
On the ground
AAA predicts that 49.1 million Americans will drive to their destinations for Thanksgiving, an increase of 1.7 percent compared with 2022, said Robert Sinclair Jr., a senior manager at AAA. That means jammed highways, with the busiest days forecast to be this Wednesday and the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
Drivers may face longer travel times than usual on certain routes, AAA reported . Along Interstate 5 between Los Angeles and Bakersfield, Calif., expect to spend 88 percent more travel time than usual on Wednesday afternoon. Drivers on the Baltimore-Washington Parkway, north of the nation’s capital, are projected to spend 71 percent more time on the road, starting early Wednesday afternoon.
Filling up the tank will cost those drivers less. Average gas prices nationwide are projected to drop to $3.25 per gallon next week, said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy . “Average gas prices have plummeted in all 50 states in the weeks ahead of Thanksgiving, with $2.99 prices spreading like wildfire just in time for the start of the holiday season,” he said in a news release .
Americans are also taking to the rails at higher numbers this year, with Amtrak expecting 750,000 customers from this Sunday until the Sunday after Thanksgiving, said Jason Abrams, senior public relations manager at Amtrak, a jump of about 2 percent.
Mr. Sinclair of AAA had a bit of advice for all the Thanksgiving road warriors: Beat the Sunday traffic by driving on Saturday. “For those who listen to Ben Franklin,” Mr. Sinclair said, “Fish and company go bad after three days.”

Thanksgiving Travel Safety Tips
AAA is predicting that 49 million Americans will be traveling by car between Wednesday and Sunday, November 23-27 th . This year is predicted to be significantly busier than the last two years as we regain pre-pandemic status.
Timing your departure can ease stressful driving. To avoid the most hectic travel times, depart early in the morning on Wednesday or before 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. 4-8 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are the busiest travel times, we suggest avoiding travel during those times.
In general, the best and worst times to be on the road are:
- Wednesday, Nov. 23 — worst times,1 a.m.-8 p.m.; best times, before 8 a.m., after 8 p.m.
- Thursday, Nov 24 — worst times, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; best times, before 11 a.m., after 6 p.m.
- Friday, Nov. 25 — worst times, 4-8 pm.; best times, before 11 a.m., after 8 p.m.
- Saturday, Nov. 26 — worst times, 4-8 pm.; best times, before 2 p.m., after 8 p.m.
- Sunday, Nov. 27 — worst times, 4-8 p.m.; best times, before 11 a.m., after 8 p.m.
What matters most is that you arrive at your destination as safely as possible. Remember to buckle up and drive sober. This advice is nothing new, yet drivers have been making increasingly risky decisions behind the wheel in recent years.
We all know seatbelts save lives but many people were killed in traffic crashes during the 2020 Thanksgiving holiday weekend and were not wearing their seatbelts. These tragedies are preventable.
Between 2016-2020 over 800 people died from a car crash that involved a drunk driver. Even a small amount of alcohol can affect the way you drive. Impaired driving isn’t only derived from alcohol consumption. It is illegal to drive under the influence of any substance that affects ones driving ability. Whether the substance is legal, illegal, over-the-counter, or prescribed, impaired driving is dangerous and puts everyone on the road at risk of a fatal crash.
With legalized marijuana on the rise, it is a common misconception that driving under the influence of marijuana is safe. That is simply not true. Numerous scientific studies have shown that reduced reaction time, reduced cognitive performance, and difficulty staying in the lane, have proven this misconception to be false.
When considering all of the above, if you choose to partake in marijuana or alcohol consumption during the holiday weekend be smart and create a plan ahead for a designated driver, and find a cab or a rideshare. If you are the sober designated driver, remember to buckle up every time, and make sure your passengers do the same. Please don’t drive distracted and watch your speed. Just because you are sober and alert doesn’t mean other drivers are too.
Wishing safe travels to you and your loved ones. From all of us at Greater Mercer TMA have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, along with the holiday feast that goes with it. Because cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires, the American Red Cross has some steps everyone can follow to have a safe holiday.
Most cooking fires are caused by unattended cooking. To help keep you and your loved ones safe, the Red Cross offers these safety tips:
- When cooking a turkey or other items in the oven, stay in your home and check on it regularly.
- Keep an eye on what you fry. Never leave cooking food unattended. If you must leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove.
- Move items that can burn away from the stove. This includes dishtowels, bags, boxes, paper and curtains. Also keep children and pets at least three feet away.
- Avoid wearing loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
- When frying food, turn the burner off if you see smoke or if the grease starts to boil. Carefully remove the pan from the burner.
- Keep a pan lid or a cookie sheet nearby. Use it to cover the pan if it catches on fire. This will put out the fire. Leave the pan covered until it is completely cooled.
- Turn pot handles to the back of the stove, so no one bumps them or pulls them over.
- Use a timer to remind yourself that the stove or oven is on. Check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving home to ensure all stoves, ovens and small appliances are turned off.
You can also help keep your family safe by testing your smoke alarms monthly and practicing your home fire escape plan until everyone can get out in less than two minutes — the amount of time you may have to get out of a burning home before it’s too late.

Thanksgiving is a Wonderful Time, But Keep Safety in Mind
Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to gather with friends and family, eat delicious food, watch football (or the parade!), and travel to visit loved ones. While enjoying the holiday, and as things might get hectic, it is important to always keep safety in mind.
Top safety hazards during the Thanksgiving holiday include:
- FIRE ... kitchen fires, candles and outdoor deep fryers
- FOOD ... choking and poisoning, cuts and burns during food preparation
- TRAVEL ... car accidents, driving while intoxicated or distracted
KITCHEN SAFETY
- Keep children away from the stove.
- Do not leave the house while the turkey is cooking.
- Ensure the kitchen floor is kept clear and doesn't have any trip hazards.
- Keep matches, lighters, candles and knives out of the reach of children.
Thanksgiving is the #1 day of the year for cooking fires, reports State Farm insurance. The U.S. Fire Department confirms that more than 4,000 fires occur on Thanksgiving Day and preparing deep fried turkeys, using a turkey fryer, is the cause of approximately 5 deaths, 50 injuries, and the destruction of 900 homes and more than $15 million in property damage every year.
Kitchen safety is even more important than usual during busy holiday times, like Thanksgiving, when more people might be working in the kitchen to prepare a large meal. But for casual cooks and experienced chefs alike, the kitchen presents more hazards than imagined. Read more about the most common ways kitchen tasks send people to the ER every day so you can plan your next family gathering to be even safer.
HOLIDAY FIRE PREVENTION TIPS
- Keep baking soda on hand to put out kitchen fires.
- Do not leave food cooking or the stove unsupervised.
- Make sure smoke alarms are working.
- A household fire extinguisher should always be nearby.
- Do not leave candles burning unattended and do not burn candles near flammable items like curtains or potpourri.
- Follow all instructions carefully when using a deep fryer and monitor closely!
Incidents of choking and food poisoning increase during the holidays, especially around Thanksgiving, as people are preparing and consuming more food than usual. Food Safety News reports that approximately 51 million turkeys are consumed on Thanksgiving.
FOOD SAFETY
- Always wash your hands after handling raw or under-cooked poultry.
- Use separate cutting boards for raw meat and produce to prevent cross-contamination.
- The USDA recommends cooking the turkey at a minimum of 325 degrees. Use a food thermometer and cook the turkey to an internal temperature of 165 to 180 degrees to ensure the turkey is cooked thoroughly and to avoid illness caused by consuming under-cooked poultry.
- Store leftovers within 2 hours or toss them.
The Veterinary Medical Association warns that turkey and chicken bones should never be given to pets because they can splinter and pets may choke.
Dogs should be kept away from any dish that has onions, leeks, garlic, raisins, grapes or chocolate, as those foods can be hazardous to your dog's health.
HOLIDAY TRAVEL SAFETY
With Thanksgiving being one of the most travel-heavy times of the year, it is important to be prepared before hitting the road and to drive defensively, especially during bad weather.
Drivers who are texting take their eyes off the road for an average of 5 seconds. Driving at 55 mph, that is about the length of a football field.
- Buckle up, every trip.
- Make sure your vehicle is well maintained.
- Plan your route ahead of time.
- Carry and emergency kit in the car.
- Be aware of weather conditions.
- Take caution in parking lots while out shopping.
- No texting while driving.
According to the National Highway Safety Association, more than 40% of holiday car accidents involve alcohol. DO NOT DRINK AND DRIVE.

Travel Tip: Thanksgiving
Pack your stretchy pants – it’s that time of year! If you choose to travel for Thanksgiving, here are some tips you’ll want to know.
TSA PreCheck®
We won’t be able to help out with the holiday traffic on the road, but we sure can get you an expressway through the security checkpoint. With TSA PreCheck®, you can breeze through airport security. Children 12 and under can accompany a parent or guardian who has TSA PreCheck® on their boarding pass. For more information or to apply, visit here.
Don’t Gift Up
Traveling with gifts? We HIGHLY recommend that you wait until you arrive at your destination to wrap gifts. Gifts may need to be unwrapped for additional inspection and we may not have the means to rewrap them for you in both carry-on and checked bags.
Leftovers are for Quitters
Who doesn’t love Thanksgiving leftovers? Nothing beats that meal again the next day all condensed into sandwich form. So what food is allowed in your carry-on?
Solid foods are allowed with no quantity limitations. Liquid, creamy or spreadable food items must be in containers that are 3.4 oz. or less. The containers must be placed in your quart-sized bag with other travel-sized liquids, gels and aerosols.
Need to keep everything cool? Any ice or ice packs must be completely frozen solid when presented for screening. If they're slightly melted, slushy or there's liquid in the bottom of the container, they must also be 3.4 oz. or less and placed in your quart-sized bag with other travel-sized liquids, gels and aerosols.
Eat, Drink and Cranberry
Now to help answer a common question. Can you bring alcohol in your carry-on bag? Well, you may carry on as many small bottles of alcohol (3.4 ounces or less) as will fit in your single quart-sized liquids bag along with your other travel-sized liquids.
What about your checked bags? Alcoholic beverages with less than 24% alcohol content, such as beer and wine, are allowed in checked bags with no quantity limitations. You may also take up to five liters of alcohol with alcohol content between 24% and 70%. Those containers must be in their unopened retail packaging. Before you embark on your journey, there are a few things you should do to prepare.
First, make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. This means getting an oil change, checking your tires, and topping off your fluids before hitting the road. You should also pack an emergency kit for your car that includes things like a first-aid kit, a flashlight, jumper cables, snacks, water, and a blanket.
If you have small children, don’t forget diapers, wipes, and changes of clothes in case you find yourself stranded or caught out in bad weather. By preparing yourself and your car before you go, you can help ensure a safe and happy Thanksgiving holiday trip.
Check For Inclement Weather Warnings
Mother Nature can be unpredictable, and a change in the weather can have serious consequences if you’re not prepared. To stay safe while on the road, check the forecast ahead of time and pay close attention to any warnings issued by local authorities.
You should also adjust your route based on current conditions — for example, if rain or high winds are predicted, you might take certain roads prone to flooding or tree debris. A little preparation is a simple way to ensure safer travel on Thanksgiving.
ON THE ROAD: THANKSGIVING TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS
When traveling this Thanksgiving, it’s essential to stay safe and focused on the road. When driving long distances, it's easy to get distracted by the sights and sounds of your surroundings, leading to careless mistakes and dangerous situations.
To avoid these hazards, it’s best to eliminate as many distractions as possible. For example, you can make sure that you’ve buckled all your passengers in and that they have plenty of entertainment options. This could mean bringing along books, games, or even movies for the kids to watch.
In addition, minimize the time spent looking at or using your phone while on the road; this means avoiding calls, texts, or web browsing. By keeping these tips in mind, you can have a safe and enjoyable holiday travel experience this Thanksgiving!
ARRIVING SAFELY FOR THANKSGIVING
Safe travel doesn’t end when you’ve reached your destination. Follow these helpful arrival tips to have an enjoyable (and safe!) Thanksgiving trip:
- When you arrive at your destination, take a few minutes to check in with your host or hostess and let them know you’ve arrived safely.
- If you’re staying in a hotel, be sure to keep your belongings close by and never leave them unattended in public areas.
- When out and about exploring, stick to well-lit areas and don’t wander off alone.
- And finally, if you’re drinking alcohol this holiday season, always do so responsibly and never get behind the wheel after having too much to drink.
IS IT SAFE TO FLY FOR THANKSGIVING?
We’ve covered road travel safety tips, but what if you choose to fly this Thanksgiving? If flying to visit friends and family is more your thing, it’s important to be aware of the potential risks involved in flying.
While flying is very safe, several factors can pose a threat to your travel plans, including changes in weather and mechanical issues with planes. We also have to consider safety concerns outside of our control, such as possible security breaches and threats from other passengers.
So is it still safe to fly this holiday season? Yes, it is. There are plenty of precautions and protocols in place at airports and airlines to ensure passengers’ safety.
But of course, it’s always important to be prepared. So make sure that you check your flight status frequently and follow airport security guidelines carefully. And if you’d prefer to avoid air travel during this holiday season, you might take another form of transportation, like driving or train travel.
Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends, and food — not accidents or injuries. By following these simple tips, you can help ensure that your holiday travel is safe and fun for everyone involved!
So travel this Thanksgiving with confidence, knowing you’ve done everything you can to stay safe. Happy holidays!

DPS Offers Tips for Safe Thanksgiving Travel
AUSTIN – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) wants to remind all drivers to practice safe driving habits and exercise extra caution while traveling on Texas roadways during the busy Thanksgiving holiday. Texas Highway Patrol Troopers will increase enforcement starting Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Dec. 1. DPS Troopers will be on the lookout for drivers failing to wear seat belts, violating the Move Over, Slow Down law, speeding and driving while intoxicated, among other traffic violations.
"As we gather with family and friends to celebrate Thanksgiving, you will play a key role in keeping everyone safe as you travel on our roadways this holiday," said DPS Director Steven McCraw. "We urge drivers to celebrate the holiday responsibly by obeying traffic laws and monitoring weather conditions when traveling. DPS Troopers will also work to protect Texans by increasing traffic enforcement over Thanksgiving."
During the 2018 Thanksgiving holiday, DPS Troopers issued more than 74,000 traffic citations and warnings, including 956 seat belt and child safety restraint citations. DPS enforcement efforts also resulted in 337 DWI arrests, 244 fugitive arrests and 213 felony arrests.
DPS offers the following tips to help Texans arrive at their destinations safely for the Thanksgiving holiday:
- Do not drink and drive. Make alternate travel plans if you are consuming alcohol.
- If you can Steer It, Clear It : If you are involved in a non-injury crash and your vehicle can be moved, clear the traffic lanes to minimize the impact on traffic. Leaving vehicles in a traffic lane not only increases traffic congestion, but it also leaves those involved with an increased risk of harm and chance for a secondary collision. On some highways, it is actually a violation of the law to not move your vehicle over when it is safe to do so.
- Move Over or Slow Down for police, fire, EMS, Texas Department of Transportation vehicles and tow trucks stopped on the side of the road with emergency lights activated. Also, show the same courtesy to fellow drivers stopped along the road. As of Oct. 31, DPS Troopers have issued 23,611 citations and warnings for violations to the Move Over, Slow Down law in Texas in 2019.
- Slow down — especially in bad weather, construction areas, heavy traffic and unfamiliar areas.
- Eliminate distractions while driving, including the use of mobile devices. Texas law prohibits using a portable wireless device to read, write or send an electronic message unless the vehicle is stopped.
- Buckle up everyone in the vehicle — it's the law.
- Drive defensively, as holiday travel may present additional challenges.
- Don't drive fatigued — allow plenty of time to reach your destination.
- If you see a road hazard or if you observe anything suspicious, report it to the nearest law enforcement agency.
- On multi-lane roadways, use the left lane for passing only. Not only is it courteous driving and avoids impeding traffic, Texas law requires slower traffic to keep to the right and to only use the left lane for passing (when posted).
- Before your trip begins, make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and always double check to make sure all cargo is secure.
- Monitor weather and road conditions wherever you are traveling. For road conditions/closings in Texas, visit Drive Texas .
Police agencies — including the Texas Highway Patrol — across the country will also increase enforcement efforts over the Thanksgiving holiday as part of Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort).

Thanksgiving Travel Tips
It’s that time of the year again, where millions are on the roads and in the sky traveling for Thanksgiving. With rising prices of air travel, more travelers may opt to drive over fly, increasing the amount of traffic on roads. The holidays are meant to be joyous and fun, not tragic or stressful, so follow these travel safety tips to ensure you arrive safely at your Thanksgiving destination.
- Avoid driving at peak times. According to The Travel’s 2022 Thanksgiving Travel Predictions , most people travel on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after. To avoid holiday traffic, try to travel on that Tuesday and Saturday instead. If you can only travel on Wednesday and Sunday, try driving early in the morning or later in the afternoon or evening, to avoid peak driving times in mid-afternoon.
- Plan alternate routes to avoid traffic. Traveling on roads with less traffic could reduce the chance of a crash, and reduce stress.
- Don’t drive distracted. Distracted driving is one of the most common causes of crashes.
- Stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks and at intersections. Also stop and look for pedestrians and bicyclists before turning.
- Slow down and obey the posted speed limit. The faster you’re driving, the more deadly a crash can be.
- Consider using public transit. If possible, use the bus or the train to reduce the number of cars and traffic on the road. If you’re visiting family or friends who live in the same town as you, consider biking, walking, or carpooling.
- Drive sober. Driving impaired can lead to a tragic and fatal crash.

- Auto Accident , Personal Injury
Historically speaking, Thanksgiving is the busiest travel weekend in the United States. According to AAA , in 2021 an estimated 53.4 million people were predicted to be traveling for the holiday. This was a shocking increase of roughly 13% from 2020. This can be attributed to the opening of the country following the pandemic. With the country being even more open this year, the number of traveling Americans will likely increase this Thanksgiving.
This doesn’t just mean higher priced airline tickets and crazy hustle and bustle at airports, you should also expect a flood of cars spilling onto the highways, filled with hungry little turkeys fiending for pumpkin pie. So, if you plan on making it to your destination in time for the 12:30 PM kickoff of the NFL Thanksgiving triple header, make sure you get a head start to beat the crowds.
Unfortunately, excessive travel time isn’t the only thing you need to watch out for this Thanksgiving. With such a large influx of traffic, your risk of being involved in an automobile accident increases significantly. With that in mind, be sure to keep your eyes on the road and your surroundings, and drive with extra caution to keep yourself and your family safe.
If you do find yourself involved in an accident, minor or serious, there are a few steps you should immediately take:
- Assess any injuries to passengers. If anyone is seriously injured or appears to be, call 911 immediately and seek the assistance of first responders.
- Once you have taken care of any injured passengers, look at the damage to your automobile. Make sure to take photos and detailed notes about the extent of the damage. It is very important to thoroughly document the damage to your vehicle.
- Ask eyewitnesses to make a statement. You can either take their statements and contact information, or wait for law enforcement to arrive. In either case, witness statements can be helpful if evidence of the incident ever needs presented.
- File a claim with your insurance company. You are going to want to do this as soon as possible and be ready to provide all the evidence you have collected along the way. There is a two (2) year statute of limitations related to personal injury cases, but that doesn’t mean you have to wait that long. The closer to the incident, the better.
- Call an attorney! The auto accident attorneys at Long & Long, LLC have extensive experience litigating personal injury cases related to car accidents. They are dedicated to getting victims of these incidents the results they deserve.

18 travel safety tips for women.
Whether it’s international business travel or leisure travel, it’s always important to keep safety a priority . Business travel can often entail long trips to unfamiliar places and can often be daunting, especially if it’s the first trip you’ve taken. We’ll go through some of the top business travel tips for women and how to keep safe when traveling solo.
Solo Female Travel for Business Travellers
For females traveling solo, business travel safety is crucial, and being proactive can help reduce some of the risks of traveling alone for business. Personal safety often gets overlooked when traveling solo, but it’s a really important consideration. Solo women, unfortunately, are often seen as an easy target by many, and staying safe needs to be a top priority. Here are some of the top travel safety tips for women to help you stay safe and stay aware when traveling.
Top Travel Safety Tips for Women
For solo female travelers, there are a lot of different elements to keep in mind to travel safely. The main thing to bear in mind, though, is to stay alert and aware as much as possible and also stay connected. There are some things you can do before leaving to make your trip safer, as well as some keeping some tips in mind when you’re at your destination. Let’s look at some top travel safety tips for women to ensure your solo trip goes well.

1. Always plan ahead
The best thing you can do for solo travel is to plan ahead as much as possible. By planning ahead, rather than leaving things to chance or going last minute, you can keep people informed about your plans and stress less.
That means researching the area, where you’re staying, public transportation, specific safety tips for your destination, and more. Of course, you’ll likely deviate from your plans to a certain extent, but having a solid foundation for your travel plans helps avoid a lot of issues down the line.
2. Research local customs
Many countries have their own local customs, traditions, and distinct cultures that may differ from what you are used to. Understanding the differences beforehand can help you navigate the country better when you arrive and help you blend in more rather than sticking out as a visitor.
Before going to a new destination, look up what appropriate clothing might be there, traditions, even simple ones such as direct eye contact, and what’s expected of women to help you avoid unwanted attention during the trip.
3. Keep in touch with a family member
While it’s important to enjoy your trip and get work done, staying in touch is just as important! Keep in touch with a family member regarding your whereabouts, locations, and plans as a general rule. That way, even in worst-case scenarios, there is someone that can account for your plans and location.
4. Purchase travel insurance
Travel is hard to predict, and there might be instances and scenarios such as a missed flight or even a natural disaster where you may require additional protection. Purchasing travel insurance is a relatively inexpensive way to give yourself added peace of mind while traveling solo. If possible, also keep a first aid kit with you when traveling for added safety.
5. Identify the local embassy
Identifying your local embassy gives you another layer of protection when traveling solo. In scenarios such as a stolen passport, missing ID, or flight issues, your embassy can help you with leaving the country and emergency exits as needed.
6. Try to learn some of the local languages
As part of the travel experience and to help blend in better, knowing the local language definitely helps. Obviously, learning an entire language is pretty difficult before leaving, but even knowing some helpful phrases can help you get by. Use an app like Google Translate to help, or just keep a note on your phone with a language cheat sheet such as greetings, basic questions, and phrases to help you get by.

7. Share your accommodation details with a trusted family member or friend
Always share your accommodation details with friends and/or family wherever you decide to stay. To be safe, don’t just share the name but send the address and neighborhood to give them more details. Certain communication apps such as Whatsapp also allow you to share your location with a pin on a map, which can be helpful. If traveling in a taxi, make a note of the license plate by taking a photo and sending it.
8. Look up local scams
Unfortunately, solo women are seen as easy targets for local scams in many countries. To stay safe, do some research beforehand on the country on common types of scams that you can be on the lookout for. As a general rule, always rely on your gut feeling if approached by a stranger, and it’s okay to steer clear from crowded places to avoid unwanted attention. However, if someone does approach you, it’s okay to walk away or disengage if they make you feel uncomfortable. Look up taxi scams in particular, as that tends to be a common one that most travelers fall victim to.
9. Additional research may be needed for developing countries
While there’s always advice around using common sense when solo traveling internationally, but it’s also crucial to remember each country’s context and history when traveling as that can help you navigate as well. If you’re traveling to developing countries where there may not be as much infrastructure or resources, additional research such as firsthand travel experiences and travel blogs can help you prepare better for the trip.

10. Purchase a money belt
Protecting your money is vital whether you’re relying on cash or credit cards. Pickpocketing and theft are unfortunately very common in many parts of the world, and they can leave you vulnerable if stolen. Purchase a money belt and a dummy wallet for added protection during solo travel, especially if you’re often on crowded city streets.
11. Separate your money
If you travel solo often, it can also help keep your money divided across different bags (e.g., emergency credit card in your backpack, a small amount of cash tucked away in your suitcase) for added protection.
12. Use the hotel safe
Most hotels will have a safe, so take full advantage! Any valuables you don’t absolutely need on a daily basis (e.g., passport, ID, emergency money, and/or credit card) should be kept in the safe. It’s peace of mind, and since you’ll be locking your hotel room before leaving anyway, you’ll be more relaxed.
13. Keep an eye out for travel advisories
Some countries are safer than others, but generally, keep an eye on travel advice – more specifically for solo female travelers. Always look for travel advisories before the trip, and try to follow local news and events while you’re there in case emergencies come up so you can leave quickly.
14. Create a detailed itinerary
If you’re traveling internationally as a solo female traveler, designing an itinerary can help you keep safe and stay organized. For example, what’s your intended destination, and what other countries are you thinking about visiting versus the ones you have concrete plans for? How many days are you planning on staying, tentatively, and what are you planning? Plans change, of course, but it makes solo travel safer since people will know your general plans and how to find you if needed.
15. Don’t pack too many valuables
It’s tempting to pack a lot when traveling solo, but it’s best not to. Keep valuables such as expensive jewelry and electronics to a minimum to avoid losing costly items. If you do have to carry them, make sure to buy secure suitcases and backpacks that you can lock and keep items in the safe as mentioned above.
16. Resist oversharing
As many travelers do, it’s fun to post and share information about your trip on social media sites, but it can also make you an easy target. Try not to post your exact location when traveling on social media to make it harder to track exactly where you are, and stagger your posts from different locations to make it difficult to pin you down. For example, you can post a photo of your dinner with the location after leaving the restaurant rather than while you’re at the restaurant.
17. Purchase a local SIM
Having internet access is crucial, and it’s easy to skip out on getting a local SIM as a way to save money – but resist the urge! A local SIM or phone number can make it easier to get in touch with you and ensures you always have access to the internet and phone wherever you are. However, don’t rely on trying to find free wi-fi everywhere as it’s not always possible and will make it harder to contact people in emergencies.
18. Get in touch with other solo travelers
If you’re feeling nervous or apprehensive about your trip, you can also get in touch with other women and solo travelers to make the trip a little easier. Many communities on Facebook and Reddit are dedicated to solo female travel, both international and domestic, where you can reach out to others when planning the trip, exchange safety tips, and meet up in your intended destination if possible.
In the realm of travel, whether for business or leisure, safety must always take precedence. Solo female travel, especially for business purposes, demands a heightened focus on personal safety and proactive measures. The travel safety tips outlined encompass a wide range of considerations, from meticulous planning and cultural awareness to staying connected and vigilant. These measures aim to empower women to embark on solo journeys confidently while prioritizing their well-being and security. With these precautions in place, solo female travelers can navigate the world with greater assurance, embracing the adventure while safeguarding their safety.
Solo travel, particularly for women, necessitates careful planning and awareness of the destination’s customs and potential risks. Staying connected with trusted contacts and learning local phrases can enhance communication and security. Additionally, understanding common scams and using secure storage options for valuables are crucial precautions. By incorporating these safety measures into their journeys, solo female travelers can experience the world with confidence and peace of mind.

DAMM provides enhanced safety for Moscow Metro
DAMM’s TetraFlex system was chosen by Moscow Metro to provide a secure and reliable communication system for enhanced safety and improved operational efficiency. The project was secured through DAMM’s local partner in Russia; Integra Pro Co.
Moscow Metro was opened in 1935. Today, its 12 lines cover 301.2 km and 182 stations and carry between 7-9 million passengers a day, making Moscow Metro the second most heavily used rapid transport system in the world.
Continuous growth in passenger numbers and regular track extensions place high demands on both safety and operational efficiency. What is more, the technologies chosen to meet those demands need to be flexible enough to meet changing requirements in the future.
A top-quality, highly reliable radio communication system is essential and plays many roles. Potential security threats and more routine emergency situations create a demand for safe and reliable communication interoperability between different emergency agencies, including the police, rescue and security services. In addition, efficient staff management and control helps increase day-to-day efficiency, while passenger services are improved through passenger information delivered via data transfer.
After investigating all available technologies, Moscow Metro found TETRA to be the most suitable technology to meet their requirements for security, reliability and flexibility in terms of changing future communication demands. As a result, Moscow Metro recently decided to upgrade their current system of mixed technologies with the integrated TETRA-based TetraFlex communication system from Damm Cellular Systems.
The special features of Damm’s TetraFlex solution were able to meet all the demanding technical requirements of Moscow Metro, ranging from harsh operating conditions to fail-safe reliability:
IP65 protected housing allowed installation within limited spaces in tunnels under harsh environmental conditions, with extremely high temperature and humidity levels
- The system’s distributed network architecture answered the need for no single point of failure
- TetraFlex ensures channel availability and accessibility during emergency situations
- Secure, reliable low-noise TETRA communications
