History and etymology of excursion

The noun 'excursion' traces its origins back to the Latin word 'excursio,' which is derived from the verb 'excurrere.' 'Excurrere' is a compound of 'ex,' meaning 'out of,' and 'currere,' meaning 'to run.' Thus, the etymology of 'excursion' can be understood as a journey that involves venturing out or running out from one's usual location or routine. Over time, this term found its way into Middle English as 'excursioun' and eventually evolved into the modern English word 'excursion.' This etymology encapsulates the essence of a short journey or trip, often taken for pleasure or a specific purpose, where one temporarily departs from their regular activities or surroundings.

Did You Know?

When the ancient Greeks used dēmagōgós (from dêmos , meaning “people,” and -agōgos , “leading”) they meant someone good—a leader who used outstanding oratorical skills to further the interests of the common people. The first known use of demagogue in English comes from the introduction to Thomas Hobbes’s 1629 translation of a text by the ancient Greek historian Thucydides : “It need not be doubted, but from such a master Thucydides was sufficiently qualified, to have become a great demagogue, and of great authority with the people.” Alas, the word quickly took a negative turn; within decades it was being used to refer to someone who uses powers of persuasion to sway and mislead.

Jittleyang Is Trending on TikTok, but Where Does the Slang Term Come From?

Jittleyang and fuhuhluhtoogan may seem like nonsense terms, but they've become very important on TikTok.

Apr. 24 2024, Published 10:13 a.m. ET

Anyone who has spent a significant amount of time on TikTok is likely aware that the platform gives many slang terms a chance to become much more well-known than they might be otherwise. Sometimes, slang is invented specifically for the platform, but other times, terms are just repurposed or exposed to a larger audience there.

Some users have noticed that jittleyang and fuhuhluhtoogan have become popular on the platform. They have started to wonder what those seemingly nonsensical words might mean. Here's what we know about what each term means and where they come from.

What does jittleyang mean?

Jittleyang originated in Baltimore and seems to have started with a local rapper and barber named Richard Webster , whose rap name is Bippleyipsnipp. He released a song called "City Girl" in 2021 which features him rapping some hard-to-understand lingo, and the song went viral on TikTok at the end of 2023. People found themselves mesmerized by the sounds he was making, even if they didn't always know what they meant.

It's also worth noting that, while it has been adopted as jittleyang, Richard actually spells the term jikkuhlang and published an entire dictionary called Jikkuhlang the Dictionary in 2022 that explains that and other terms.

You might think that a dictionary named after the term would contain its definition, but alas that isn't the case. Richard did define the related term jikkal as "an attention grabber."

Based on the dictionary's explanation, the suffix "yang" can be applied to words to give them an extra flare, but that doesn't necessarily mean they mean anything different. Jittleyang likely refers to something that grabs attention, then, and in the context of his music, that thing seems to usually be a person.

What does fuhuhluhtoogan mean?

While the dictionary did offer some insight into jittleyang, it doesn't have much at all to say about another popular phrase from Richard's work, fuhuhluhtoogan. If you use some context clues as well as the definitions of related words that can be found in the dictionary, you may come to understand that the term essentially means that a person is good in bed.

@_shawwttyy What is she on abt bro 😭😭 ♬ original sound - ŠĘßÃŚ

There's a new meme involving these words.

Part of the reason both terms have become so popular on TikTok is thanks to a meme that asks whether a person is a jittleyang or a fuhhuhluhtoogan. The trend as it currently exists seems to involve people (usually young people) asking someone in their life this question and filming them as they are totally and utterly baffled by it.

The meme doesn't seem to have much to do with the actual definitions of the words as we understand them. Instead, it seems like the people behind the meme simply heard Richard's song and decided they liked some of the slang he was using. The words are fun to say and hear even if they're completely devoid of any context. Given how popular this meme is on TikTok, it seems that the internet agrees.

Where does Florida rank in 'hardest to understand states' slang survey?

In the October 2023 Preply survey measuring the “hardest to understand states,” Florida ranked in the Top 20. The phrase "jiffy feet," created in and mostly used around the Jacksonville area, stumped 43% of the people surveyed.

What does the phrase “jiffy feet” mean to you, if anything? To people from Jacksonville, it doesn’t mean having great dance moves – which is what most respondents who took the Preply survey thought it meant.

What is the meaning of jiffy feet?

The phrase “jiffy feet” refers to the layer of dirt and dust that adorns the bottom of one’s feet after prancing around driveways, streets, dirt roads, gas stations or really anywhere barefoot.

It perfectly reflects the tendencies of “beachnecks ” (proud beach-dwelling rednecks), who live around Atlantic, Neptune and Jacksonville beaches, to ditch their shoes – especially on beach, boat and pool days.

For example, if you’ve ever spent a Fourth of July biking up and down First Street, you probably had jiffy feet by the time you were walking back home from watching fireworks on the beach.

In a FLORIDA TODAY Facebook post , social media users referred to "jiffy feet" as "7-Eleven feet," "Circle K feet" or "gas station feet."

Where did the slang term 'jiffy feet' come from?

The First Coast slang phrase is built on a slang word that also comes from the Jacksonville area. A “jiffy” or “jiffy store” refers to any gas station or quick stop-style store. For most Duval residents who have been in the area in the last 40 years, “jiffy” is to a quick stop as Kleenex is to a tissue.

This is because of an Orange Park-based chain of convenience stores called Huntley’s Jiffy Food Stores that had the bulk of its 342 stores in the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The chain of stores was bought out twice and any quick stop store that used to be a Huntley’s Jiffy is now a Circle K.

“Jiffy feet” became a popular saying around the Jacksonville area some time in the ‘70s according to reporting by Co-Owner and Editor of The Jaxson Bill Delaney.

“By the 80’s and 90’s, the term was in use in other parts of Florida as well, including Daytona Beach, Ocala, and the Panhandle as far as Pensacola, and even in some other Southern states,” Delaney wrote in an  article on jiffy feet for The Jaxson . “At least initially, the term’s geographical range likely correlated with the presence of stores named ‘Jiffy.’”

What slang words are specific to Florida?

Here are some other Florida phrases and words that are common in the local lexicon. This is certainly not a comprehensive list. Vote  for your favorite  at the end of the list!

  • Florida happy meal :  A Florida happy meal is just easier than saying “I’m going to the jiffy for beer,  a lottery ticket  and cigarettes.”
  • Jit:  It stands for “Juvenile in training.”  Urban Dictionary  has a more  colorful  description for the meaning of the word. If anyone calls you this, you’re being insulted.
  • Noseeum :  This is what we call the little  invisible bugs, actually midges , that decorate our legs with itchy red bumps in the summer. If you’ve never met a noseeum, just know they’re like the really annoying sidekick of mosquitoes.
  • Snowbirds : Hordes of northerners that flock to Florida beaches every winter.
  • Florida bath :  Don’t feel like showering off the chlorine after your pool day? No worries! You don’t have to. You took a Florida bath.
  • Square grouper:  Every once in a while, if you’re fishing or swimming in the right place at the right time, you could come across a square grouper. This is  the name that the US Coast Guard working in the waters around South Florida gave to overboarded bales of drugs.  It’s also the name of  the Florida bar where Alan Jackson shot his “5 O’Clock Somewhere” music video.

Can't see the poll?   Click here to cast your vote . The results may surprise you. Bet. (That's slang for OK or approve.)

What does 'Sapphic' mean? An ancient term is having a modern moment

The sculpture "The Three Graces" over the word "Sapphic"

When people look at images captured by Ty Busey, the photographer says she wants them to know that the pictures and films were captured by a queer woman. Drawing on Renaissance paintings as inspiration, Busey poses her subjects, who are LGBTQ women and nonbinary people, with halos and textured backgrounds in lounging postures. She describes her artistic eye in one word: “Sapphic.”

The term derives from Sappho, a lyrical poet who lived in ancient Greece and created verses about pursuing women lovers that were rich in sensuality and nostalgia — and even libertine at times.

A self-portrait of photographer Ty Busey.

The style of Busey’s work is a fitting way to rectify its namesake’s historical legacy. In the hundreds of years after her death around 570 B.C.E., Sappho was often portrayed in art as heterosexual when her own poetry said otherwise.

When asked what she hopes viewers take away from her visuals, Busey said, “I want the person watching the video to be like, ‘Yes, this is what it feels like to be with a woman.’”

Busey, a Maryland resident who has identified as a lesbian since she was a teenager, first learned about the label “Sapphic” on TikTok in 2021. In the years since she’s embraced the term, it has abounded, appearing on social media meme pages , as a literary genre , as a descriptor for events in brick and mortar spaces and even as a noun for self-identification.

Photographer Ty Busey draws on Renaissance paintings for inspiration.

Over two-and-a-half millennia removed from its namesake, the term Sapphic does not have a precise definition that’s agreed upon by all of those who currently embrace it. However, its current use is generally as an umbrella term for lesbians, bisexuals, pansexuals and other women-loving women, and for transgender and nonbinary people who may not identify as women themselves but align with this spectrum of attraction and community.

While Sapphic may evoke ancient images of romance, it has a lesser-known political undercurrent: The poet Sappho resisted tyranny in her own era by the military general Pittacus, making her a potent queer symbol during a tenuous time for LGBTQ rights.

A rebirth on the internet

Describing herself as “chronically online,” Tyler Mead, 28, said she learned about the term Sapphic “funnily enough, actually, on the internet.”

As a singer, songwriter and producer under the moniker STORYBOARDS , she came across queer artists like Fletcher using the term.

“It got me intrigued, and I was like, ‘What does this term mean? What does this mean to them? And, what could it also mean for me?’ Because it’s been a bit of a journey for me of coming out in multiple layers,” Mead said.

In 2018, Mead came out as pansexual, then in 2020 as a trans woman. For the past year, she’s identified as a lesbian and as Sapphic, which she said captures a philosophy of “softness” in her approach to romance and dating.

“An interesting part of being a trans woman who is Sapphic is that, even before I started transitioning, I always knew that I was attracted to women … but not in a straight way,” Mead, who lives in Los Angeles, said.

The expansiveness of the term, she explained, is a strong draw, adding that she knows people who are trans masculine that use it.

A songwriter since middle school, Mead not only considers her music Sapphic but sums up her entire “energy” on the bio section of her TikTok profile as: “Sapphic fairy.”

The word “Sappho” appears to have first emerged digitally in 1987 on an early iteration of an email list, according to Avery Dame-Griff, curator of the Queer Digital History Project .

The Greek poet, it seems, was the namesake of an English language mailing list for LGBTQ women during a time when email would have only been accessible to those in academic or computer-related fields, according to Dame-Griff.

A name like Sappho, he explained, would have signaled that the mailing list was for queer women without using a term like “gay” or “lesbian,” which would have drawn unwanted attention.

Since 2004, the first year for which Google Trends provides search data , the term “Sapphic” peaked in December 2005 before steadily declining for the next 15 years. Since 2020, however, it has been on a steady upward trajectory.

Perhaps nowhere is the term currently more prominent than social media, where Sappho-themed meme accounts —  Sappho Was Here , Suffering Sappho Memes and Sapphic Sandwich , just to name a few — have amassed tens of thousands of followers on Instagram. And, on TikTok, a wildly popular social media platform among those in the 18-29 demo , the term has been hashtagged over 340,000 times.

Some of those hashtags lead to 26-year-old New Yorker Nina Haines. During the pandemic, Haines said, she was craving queer community. Unable to see LGBTQ friends in person because of Covid, she started posting about Sapphic literature on TikTok in an effort to find connection.

Then, in 2021, Haines founded Sapph-Lit , a book club that today boasts 8,200 members from over 60 countries, with members who identify as queer women and nonbinary people. Her book picks have included modern romances, like Casey McQuiston’s “I Kissed Shara Wheeler,” and classics like Audre Lorde’s “Zami: A New Spelling of My Name.”

Nina Haines, founder of Sapph-Lit, and her Sappho tattoo, inked by Yink of Golden Hour Tattoo in Brooklyn, N.Y.

“At the end of the day, we really want to prioritize Sapphic literature, because Sapphics have been historically rendered invisible throughout history,” she said.

For Haines, who has a tattoo of Sappho on her arm, the term Sapphic “captures the women-loving-women experience” in a way that is “rooted in history” and that signals “that we have always been here.”

A historical legacy

Hailing from the Greek island of Lesbos and living from roughly 630 B.C.E. to 570 B.C.E., what is known of Sappho’s life comes from surviving fragments of her poetry and what was written about her by other ancients, according to Page duBois, the author of 1995’s “ Sappho Is Burning ” and a professor of classics and comparative literature at the University of California, San Diego.

Sappho’s queer legacy, duBois added, emerges from an expression of romantic and sexual desire toward women in her poems, often with a tint of nostalgia.

Lesbian Culture

“They are really lovely and project that kind of world of voluptuous, flower filled, scented eros [desire] directed toward women,” duBois said.

But a passive “pink, romantic Valentine” she was not. “An aggressive pursuer of her lover,” Sappho described intimate memories of a far away, beloved woman, according to duBois.

“She talks about anointing her with beautiful ointments and putting garlands on her, and satisfying each other on soft beds,” duBois said of Fragment 94 of Sappho’s poetry.

Sappho, Greek lyric poet of Mytilene, Lesbos, Asia Minor.

There are contradictory interpretations that Sappho was a schoolteacher, an aristocrat or a hetaira (a sex worker who operated like a courtesan or geisha), and that she was perhaps enslaved. In the Middle Ages and Victorian periods, she was presented as heterosexual in art, portrayed as a forlorn woman who threw herself off a cliff after she was rejected by a ferryman she loved.

Finding a new generation

For the past 100 years, an ever-evolving lexicon — and a debate about the best terms to use — has been a consistent feature of LGBTQ culture.

As far back as the 1920s, there are examples of “Sapphic” being used to advertise sexual entertainment, like sex shows, performed by women for a male audience. The term Sapphic can also be found in 1930s tabloid headlines , and several lesbian publications in the ‘70s and ‘80s incorporated the word Sappho in their names .

A 1973 issue of the lesbian magazine Echo of Sappho.

It became more common for women to identify as a “lesbian” in the 1960s, though there were earlier exceptions, according to Cookie Woolner, author of “ The Famous Lady Lovers: Black Women and Queer Desire Before Stonewall .”

Of course, butch, femme, dyke, stud and a host of other terms have been embraced by queer women, each shaped by the communities that created them and the social movements of their time.

“Maybe in some ways, the terms are changing because it’s about a break from a past generation,” said Woolner, an associate professor of history at the University of Memphis.

Though Woolner and others have noted that there are those who eschew certain terms or identifiers, for one reason or another. Some LGBTQ women, for example, don’t identify with “Sapphic” due to a perceived chasteness and the ancient aura.

A photograph from Maryland-based photographer Ty Busey.

For the past three years, Busey has organized a “Sapphic picnic” outside of Washington, D.C. For this year, Busey chose the theme “For the Gods,” an ode to Greek gods and goddesses and conducted a photo shoot to match.

“There’s something about those ancient photos and the way that they’re all falling on each other — I really love them so much,” she said. “I just want to recapture it specifically with women, especially if I could put a Black woman in there.”

More than 2,500 years after Sappho walked the earth, champions of the term Sapphic see the parallels between finding their own power and the erasure and subsequent embrace of the lyrical poet’s queer identity.

“I see her as this reclamation,” Haines said of Sappho. “As this statement of, ‘No, I actually mean the words that I say, and don’t twist them.’”

Everyday Wordle tips

I've written a lot about Wordle -- from  covering its 1,000th word  to my list of the  best starter words  to a  helpful two-step strategy  to news about  controversial word changes . I've even rounded up  what I learned playing the hit online word puzzle for a full year . So if you're rethinking your need for the actual answer, you might try tips from one of those stories.

Still need a starter word? One person told me they just look around and choose a five-letter object that they've spotted to use as their starter word -- such as COUCH or CHAIR. I tend to stick to starter words that have the most popular letters used in English words. I like TRAIN as a starter, though I have a friend who uses TRAIL. I've read that people  use the financial term ROATE , but I like to use words I actually know.

What is Wordle?

If you read this far, you know how to play. You have six chances to guess a five-letter word, and the game gives you feedback as to whether the letters you've guessed are in the puzzle or not, and if they're in the same spot where you guessed they are. The New York Times  bought the game from creator Josh Wardle  for seven figures in 2022. Wardle famously created the game for his partner, and let her narrow down the 12,000 five-letter words in the English language to just 2,500, creating the database of answers. It was convenient, too, that he has a name that plays off "word."

A Times spokesperson told me it lists the very first Wordle as appearing on June 19, 2021, and the paper  celebrated the game's 1000th word on March 15 . Spoiler: That 1000th word was ERUPT. As in, "Dad will erupt if the Wordle is so tough he loses his streak."

There are other fun games in the Times Games stable. My  latest addiction is Connections , which I think is trickier than Wordle. This is the game where you look at a grid of 16 words and try to put them into four groups of related words. Sometimes the relationships between the words are pretty out there -- like the time when it was four words that all began with rock bands, such as "Rushmore" and "journeyman." (Connections got a little sassy on April Fools' Day with an  all-emoji puzzle . Some gamers did NOT find that funny.)

Spelling Bee  is a popular Times game too. And there's a new game that's still in beta,  Strands , which I'm trying to master.

Reconnecting the meaning of these two simple words: Health&Care

Johnson & johnson is restoring the true meaning of healthcare by developing advanced treatments and smarter and less invasive solutions for today’s most complex diseases..

In today’s world, healthcare has become disconnected. Johnson & Johnson is reconnecting the meaning of those two simple words: Health&Care. The goal is to bring together innovations in medicine and technology and the care the company delivers to impact health for humanity.

Here are 10 recent examples that demonstrate the company’s work in solving the world’s toughest healthcare challenges to transform the patient experience.

Bladder cancer rises from the bladder lining, which makes it challenging to physically access treatments because liquids don’t stay in the bladder for long. To address this, Johnson & Johnson researchers are looking at an investigational novel targeted releasing system that’s inserted into the bladder and steadily delivers therapy directly through this device technology. The targeted release system received  Breakthrough Therapy Designation  from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2023.

Inventors and mentors, scientists and lifesavers, nurses exemplify the best of Health&Care. Johnson & Johnson honors their invaluable contributions, providing resources and expanding opportunities for these frontline healthcare professionals. Johnson & Johnson has a long history of tackling cardiovascular disease. With its planned acquisition of Shockwave Medical , Johnson & Johnson is further expanding its portfolio into coronary artery disease and peripheral artery disease to ultimately transform the future of cardiovascular treatment. This acquisition follows that of Abiomed, which has accelerated options for people with heart failure .

Cardiac ablation  is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses heat or cold energy to destroy a small area of heart tissue that is causing an arrhythmia—which may be the result of atrial fibrillation (AFib) or another cardiac condition. Currently in clinical development at Biosense Webster is Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) technology, which uses a controlled electric field to ablate cardiac tissue. PFA has the potential to offer safe, consistent and efficient therapy for patients. Among the potential benefits for both patients and physicians: PFA shaves time off the procedure and potentially reduces the risk of damage to the esophagus, veins and nerves that exists with other ablation techniques.

Company researchers are also investigating early interventions in preventing the rare blood cancer  multiple myeloma . The research focuses on smoldering myeloma, a precancerous condition that affects a small portion of people with multiple myeloma. Scientists are investigating whether certain genetic markers can signal which patients with smoldering myeloma are at the highest risk of progressing to multiple myeloma—and if certain treatments may benefit patients with the precancerous condition.

Black men are two times more likely to die from prostate cancer than most other men, and they’re less likely than white men to receive prostate cancer screening. That’s why Johnson & Johnson launched Talk That Talk TM in 2022. This educational campaign aims to inspire Black men to normalize prostate health discussions and encourage early detection.

A surgical stapler, called the  Echelon™ 3000 , developed by Ethicon, a Johnson & Johnson MedTech company, makes it easier for surgeons to maneuver in tight spaces with more precision. Plus, its ergonomic design means surgeons with different hand sizes can use it effectively. Another feature: It can be operated with one hand at the push of a button. Approved by the FDA in 2022, the Echelon 3000 can be used in multiple minimally invasive procedures, including  thoracic ,  colorectal  and bariatric surgeries.

To help increase the number of medical doctors from diverse communities,  Johnson & Johnson has collaborated with several organizations that aim to promote equity in three areas of medicine that have considerable gaps in representation: optometry ,  surgery  and  clinical trials . Why is this important? Studies show that patients  prefer doctors who share their same race or ethnicity . And when patients from underserved communities are treated by people who share their background, they have better health outcomes, including improved  medication adherence  and  confidence in recommended treatments .

Johnson & Johnson MedTech has developed the  Monarch™ Platform  for Bronchoscopy, which allows physicians to examine hard-to-reach areas of the lung where conventional bronchoscopes have greater challenges with access and stability. This reach and access to the periphery could potentially extend beyond diagnostic procedures to find lung cancer at an earlier stage. Researchers are now studying how minimally invasive procedures can potentially aid in lung cancer treatment.

In 2022, the INHANCE™ Shoulder System received FDA clearance to be used in reverse shoulder replacement procedures. The Inhance Shoulder System had previously been approved for use in traditional shoulder replacement surgeries. Using the system involves fewer instruments and fewer surgical steps in the operating room, and it can offer a faster healing time for patients.

In 2023, Johnson & Johnson’s Our Race to Health Equity ( ORTHE ) initiative invested in two pilot programs that encourage and mentor nursing students of color—one in partnership with the National League for Nursing, the other in collaboration with the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Johnson & Johnson has long been committed to supporting nurses, and that includes finding solutions that boost diversity across the nursing profession.

Cleveland browns 2024 nfl draft grades.

  • April 28, 2024
  • Drew Crabtree, NFL Editor

Browns draft

The 2024 Cleveland Browns draft class is finalized. Last year, for the first time in the Deshaun Watson era in Cleveland, the Browns made the playoffs. Oddly enough, it wasn’t Watson who led the team into the postseason, it was the hodge-podge of quarterbacks finally capped off by 39-year-old Joe Flacco! In total, the team started five different quarterbacks: Watson (six), Flacco (five), Dorian Thompson-Robinson (three), AAF star P.J. Walker (two), and Jeff Driskel (one).

In addition, the Browns lost franchise running back Nick Chubb in Week 2. It wasn’t the greatest season in franchise history. Despite that, the team finished second in the best division in football and made the playoffs as a wild card. Sure, they were unceremoniously ousted by the Houston Texans, but the Browns had plenty to be proud of and a solid foundation to build upon.

This year, NFL.com had the Browns’ biggest draft needs at offensive tackle, linebacker, defensive tackle, wide receiver, and tight end. Cleveland did not have a first-round pick in the draft as part of the Watson trade. With their six picks, the team didn’t really address their needs. However, they found a number of best players available who will fortify depth and a couple will even contribute right away.

Grading the Cleveland Browns 2024 NFL Draft Class

Round 2, pick 54: michael hall, dt, ohio state.

There’s something about the Browns and Ohio State. Denzel Ward was a Buckeye and has lived up to every bit of hype that came with his fourth-overall selection. Plus, Ronnie Hickman Dawand Jones, Tanner McAllister, and Luke Wypler have found their way up I-71 to Cleveland. This year, it’s stud defensive tackle, Michael Hall .

Hall was perhaps the top defensive lineman for the Buckeyes over the last two seasons but the productivity did not follow. In total, he only managed 43 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, six sacks, and a recovered fumble as a full-time member of the rotation. He flashed on occasion but also disappeared at times.

The draw for Hall is his incredible athleticism. When it comes to defensive tackles who weigh more than 290 pounds, only four players have run a sub-4.75 40-yard. One of those was Geno Atkins, a player the Cleveland faithful are well-accustomed to as he made a name for himself in Cincinnati.

He’s a tad undersized but he has just about everything else the Browns were looking for. Hall is a bit of a liability in the run game. However, when you rush him with the likes of Myles Garrett and Za’Darius Smith and he will be well worth the pick.

Full Michael Hall Scouting Report

Round 3, Pick 85: Zak Zinter, G, Michigan

For as much jubilation the intersection of Browns and Buckeyes had for the Hall selection, there were some raised eyebrows. Cleveland went out and brought in guard and Michigan stalwart, Zak Zinter . Oddly enough, Zinter recently commented on the fact that it was the Browns’ first pick who accidentally fell on his ankle which resulted in his injury.

Zinter has been a three-year starter for what can be considered to be the top offensive line in college football. As a sophomore, he was a Second-Team All-Big 10 selection. As a junior, he was selected as a First-Team All-Big 10 honoree. Finally, last year, Zinter was a First-Team All-American selection to go with another First-Team All-Big 10. He was part of a unit that won the Joe Moore Award for the top offensive line in both 2021 and 2022.

The biggest hit to Zinter is probably the fact that he is coming off of a gruesome injury suffered late last year. That and the whole knowing the defensive plays thing, but in terms of his playing ability, Zinter was a very solid guard in his time. He comes to Cleveland incredibly experienced with a strength in the run game.

He will likely not be ready for the 2024 season. Even with the loss of Bill Callahan, the Browns offensive line is as good and as deep as any. Zinter, after “redshirting” in 2024 should develop into a regular starter on the Browns offensive line.

Full Zak Zinter Scouting Report

Round 5, Pick 156: Jamari Thrash, WR, Louisville

The starting trio for the Browns at wide receiver can go toe-to-toe with most receiver corps in the NFL. Amari Cooper, Elijah Moore, and Jerry Jeudy have this team set up for success. However, depth is always necessary and Jamari Thrash should be that.

Thrash started his career in the Sun Belt at Georgia State. It took him a second to break out but when he did, it was in a big way. In his fourth year with the Panthers, Thrash amassed 1,122 yards and seven touchdowns off of 61 receptions. He parlayed that success and made the jump to Louisville. In his lone season with the Cardinals, Thrass accounted for 858 yards and six scores as he hauled in 63 passes.

When it comes to Day 3 picks, teams prioritize athleticism. Oddly enough, he had a slightly above average RAS at 6.77 but he had a fantastic Senior Bowl workout. He has the speed to make things happen and is great when it comes to catches in traffic.

He’s not likely to challenge the top three for snaps, he’s battling Cedric Tillman and David Bell. With development, Thrash should be a fine depth piece.

Full Jamari Thrash Scouting Report

Round 6, Pick 206: Nathaniel Watson, LB, Mississippi State

The Browns draft class chugs along with a veteran presence in Nathaniel Watson . Linebacker was a need heading into this draft and the Browns could have done a lot worse than Watson.

He was a sixth-year player at Mississippi State with four years of double-digit appearances. In total, he logged 377 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 21 sacks, two interceptions, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. he was a finalist for the Butkus Award last year and was honored with a Third-Team All-American selection.

Watson is regarded as an old-school type of linebacker. He comes downhill to defend the run and is as sure of a tackler as you’ll find in this class. He is a bit older but if he’s going to be a rotational piece, that’s no worry. Considering how good the starting linebackers are, the Browns could do worse with Watson as a depth piece.

Round 7, Pick 227: Myles Harden, CB, South Dakota

The Browns did not go into this draft with a need for a starting corner as they have one of the better duos in the NFL. However, depth is always welcome and they got themselves a steal out of the FCS in the seventh round.

Myle Harden was a key member of the back-to-back FCS champions and was a first-team All-American for South Dakota. He finished his career with 143 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, a sack, six interceptions, 26 pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and four recovered fumbles.

As a prospect, NFL.com actually believed him to be a fourth-round talent while NFL Mock Draft Database had him as the consensus 191st player. Getting Harden at 227 is a steal.

He likely won’t be a massive contributor right away but his ability to track the ball and impressive tackling will help his cause. There will be an acclimation period jumping from the FCS to the NFL but Harden should be fine.

Round 7, Pick 243: Jowon Briggs, DT, Cincinnati

Perhaps one of the late risers in this year’s class, Jowon Briggs is an interesting selection. After transferring to Cincinnati from Virginia, Briggs was a regular member of the Bearcats’ defensive line. In three seasons, Briggs started 30 games with appearances in nine others and started the CFP Semifinal against Alabama back in 2021.

In his time in Cincinnati, Briggs logged 129 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, and blocked a kick.

Nose tackles are not the most popular players in draft classes but you can still find diamonds in the rough late on Day 3. That could be Briggs. He’s an athletic prospect with a quick get-off that will help in pass-rushing scenarios.

It might be an uphill battle for Briggs to make the roster behind Dalvin Thomlinson or Quinton Jefferson and the rest of that solid defensive line.
