You are here, trek bicycle plans to ‘right size’ with 10% cuts to spending.

BOULDER, Colo. (BRAIN) — Trek Bicycle president John Burke has told company leaders that he has decided to “right size” the company by 10% in response to slow sales and high inventory levels. But he says the company's overall strategy remains unchanged.

In an internal memo Burke sent to executives recently, he said details of the cuts would be announced Friday.  He said in addition to a 10% cut in spending, Trek would substantially reduce its stock keeping units (SKUs), saying Trek’s model year 2026 SKUs will be 40% lower than model year 2024.

“These are turbulent times in our business,” Burke began in a confidential Company Update document that Burke sent internally, which BRAIN has obtained.

He went on to say the global bike market is “in chaos,” with high inventory levels at wholesale and retail levels, leading to “significant and continued” discounting. He said retail sales were also below Trek forecasts, including in January and February this year. He said the company had not hit its monthly sales goals for the past 15 months.

He said the situation left him with three options: simply hope for better days ahead, continue to make cuts around the edges, or “right size our business to the realities of the marketplace.” He said he decided to take the third route.

He said Trek would reduce overall spending by 10% with cuts to programs and positions, with decisions made on or before March 8. Trek will also simplify its product lines and reduce inventory levels; He said model year 2026 inventory will be 20% lower, measured in days in stock, than they were before the pandemic bike boom.

However, Burke said Trek’s overall strategy has not changed and the brand’s “flywheel” is “spot on.”

BRAIN has reached out to a Trek representative for a response.

The Trek news comes amid many cuts across the independent bicycle channel and related businesses in the past year, including cuts at Vista Outdoor , HLC , Rad Power, REI , Zwift, QBP, The Pro’s Closet and Signa Sports United (owner of WiggleCRC and other e-commerce brands).

How Trek Bicycles has kept a great culture rolling in a fast-moving 2020

While companies in many industries have weathered severe declines in revenue, Trek and other bicycle sellers have seen sales take off amid a pandemic that prompted people to avoid public transportation, skip indoor “spin” classes, and seek family friendly outings—like bike rides.

Trek Bicycles has had to navigate very different bumps in the road from most organizations this past year.

While companies in many industries have weathered severe declines in revenue, Trek and other bicycle sellers have seen sales take off amid a pandemic that prompted people to avoid public transportation, skip indoor “spin” classes, and seek family friendly outings—like bike rides.

Demand that is doubling or tripling compared to 2019 is a good thing generally. But the bike boom has put unprecedented pressures on Waterloo, Wis.-based Trek to keep employees and customers healthy as well as to keep busy staffers from burning out. What’s more, the racial reckoning spurred by the murder of George Floyd has prompted Trek to take stock of an industry that has lacked diversity .

The company has responded with a combination of new safety protocols, higher pay, new employee recognition programs and a new commitment to racial inclusion. Trek also has continued to conduct “pulse” surveys to closely monitor the employee experience. That standing practice has enabled the company to learn and pivot quickly in a year when the challenges have popped up one after another, says Mark Joslyn, the company’s vice president of HR and IT.

“We’re never satisfied,” Joslyn says. “We’re always looking for a better way.”

With its nimble, people-first response to a difficult 2020, it’s not surprise Trek is a Fortune Best Workplaces in Retail list winner this year.

Retailers with a great culture to offer

To determine the list, Fortune partnered with people analytics firm Great Place to Work to analyze anonymous survey feedback representing more than 900,000 employees working in the retail industry in the United States.

Grocery store chain Wegmans Food Markets ranked first in the large-company category of the list, followed by auto seller CarMax , Publix Super Markets , Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) and grocery store chain Nugget Market .

Employees responded to more than 60 survey questions describing the extent to which their organization creates a “Great Place to Work For All.” Eighty-five percent of the evaluation is based on what employees say on Great Place to Work’s Trust Index survey about their experiences of trust and reaching their full human potential as part of their organization, no matter who they are or what they do. Great Place to Work analyzes these experiences relative to each organization’s size, workforce make up, and what’s typical relative to their peers in the industry.

The remaining 15 percent of the rank is based on an assessment of all employees’ daily experiences of innovation, the company’s values, and the effectiveness of their leaders, to ensure they’re consistently experienced. To be considered, companies had to meet the Great Place to Work-Certified standard .

Racing to keep up with demand

Trek is in high gear these days, and has been for the last three or four years. During this period, the bike maker has expanded its workforce to meet changing customer expectations, sell into more global markets, and service a growing retail business. At this point, 60% percent of Trek employees work in the United States, with the remainder in 25 countries across the globe.

trek executive team

Trek’s U.S. independent retailers and own stores were classified as “essential businesses” when the COVID-19 pandemic hit earlier this year. And as demand for bicycles soared, Trek leaders and employees moved quickly to create safety protocols. For example, the company launched curbside and home delivery options for bike sales and servicing.

Trek also took steps to reward employees handling high work volumes. It accelerated a plan to raise its national minimum wage to $15 per hour. It also introduced an “Above and Beyond” bonus of up to $500 for front line workers such as mechanics, sales associates, and workers in its distribution and manufacturing centers. An even more lucrative “President’s Award” was launched, giving employees up to $1,000 for living out the company’s “Non-Negotiables”—values that include “Have Good Energy,” “Think Global,” and “Give Back.”

Then there are the “Boxes of Awesome.” These are care packages sent weekly from the Wisconsin headquarters to operations across the company, Joslyn explained. At first, the boxes had items often in short supply, such as toilet paper and masks. More recently, they have included food items to surprise and reward teams.

Reexamining cycling and social justice

In the wake of the murder of George Floyd, Trek has taken a hard look in the mirror and at an industry that has historically lacked a conscious effort to include people of color. The company announced a series of initiatives that include scholarships for young cyclists of diverse backgrounds to participate in high school mountain biking through the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. Trek also committed to opening bike stores in communities of color. And it launched a diversity training program.

Central to the training was establishing a common vocabulary around issues of race and inclusion, Joslyn said, “so we could have better, more productive conversations about these topics.” What’s more, the training extended across borders, including Trek’s global employee base.

“This issue is not just a US thing,” Joslyn said. “This training needed to become available for employees around the world. They care. They all have room for massive improvement in their countries.”

Taking the pulse of employees’ experience

One way Trek has kept track of what their employees care about is through regular “pulse” surveys. In contrast to some organizations that conduct employee surveys just once a year, Trek will survey its entire workforce or portions of it on multiple occasions throughout the year.

The company has continued this approach in 2020. It used Great Place to Work’s Emprising survey tool to create custom questions related the pandemic, such as how well employees felt Trek was ensuring their safety and well-being during the COVID-19 crisis.

The pulse survey practice not only has enabled Joslyn and his team to stay attuned to employee sentiment during challenging times, but also troubleshoot problems and solve them quickly. For example, he says, one pocket in the IT department saw survey scores drop suddenly earlier this year. The team’s leader looked into the decline, discovering that a process change hadn’t been communicated effectively to all staffers. Once the issue was addressed, scores on the team rose again.

“They solved the challenge within weeks,” Joslyn says.

Here was a problem that might have festered for months and eroded morale at a typical company. With its culture of listening, Trek steered right around the potential pothole.

In anything, Trek as a whole is pedaling faster and more smoothly than ever. In 2020, 89 percent of employees call the company a great place to work—an improvement from Trek’s score in 2019.

Joslyn says one key to the company’s success has been learning other Best Workplaces, including those in fields like technology, hospitality and healthcare.

“Most of the time, the better way isn’t in our own industry,” he says.

A willingness to improve by exploring new terrain—that’s just how Trek rolls.

To lead with will is to be driven by desire and determination. Willful leaders are always ready to roll up their sleeves and put in work in order to achieve exemplary results.

Best team on the field

Hiring the right people is about more than just technical fit—we want people on our team who show up every day with empathy, kindness, and care.

Iconic leaders aren't satisfied with the status quo. They're constantly looking for bigger, better, and bolder ways to do things.

Let’s work together to make the world better Have a cause you’re passionate about? We’ll support you any way we can. Whether you need extra funding, paid time off, or another set of eager hands, we’re always happy to help.

Local grants

We established a local grant program to provide funding for projects that help get more people on bikes. If you or someone you know needs some seed money to start a bike shop or enhance your community in any way, reach out to us at [email protected]

Volunteer PTO

All Trek employees have access to paid time off to volunteer for non-profits that help build our communities, so whether you want to spend the day volunteering at the polls, working at a food bank, or empowering our youth, we’ll support you every step of the way.

Employee profile: Tati Koufopanteli, LIFE Camp

In the summer of 2020, Trek store manager Tati Koufopantaeli was looking for ways to get more involved with the youth in her community. With Trek’s support, she partnered with a non-profit called Life Camp to help get kids from underserved communities involved in cycling. Over eight weeks, the program gives students mentorship and training to enter the workforce—and all students who complete the program are guaranteed a position with Trek. Now, with Tati’s help, we’re expanding this program to more communities across the country.

Employee profile: Chad Wolfe, Taco Trek Ride

Chad Wolfe was looking for ways to unite the cyclists in his community. The manager of Trek’s Johnson City location, Chad wanted to create a group ride that appealed to everyone—old-school roadies, trike-pushing toddlers, brand-new mountain bikers, you name it. And so, the Taco Trek Ride was born. Trek supports Chad with marketing materials to help him reach even more riders, and we invite his insight on enacting similar events at Trek stores around the world.

Trek’s not-so-basic benefits Sure—offering a 401k isn’t revolutionary. But creating a great environment for our employees has long been a company value at Trek. We’re always looking for ways to improve our employees’ home and work lives, and we expand what’s available to them every year. From rare benefits like ESOP and paid time off for volunteer work to expanded healthcare coverage, we do our best to take care of everyone who works at Trek.

Lidl-Trek establishes development team, announcing first 8 riders

trek executive team

Markel Irizar is heading up the initiative to develop Lidl-Trek's next-gen stars

Lidl-Trek has undergone a seismic shift in the last month and a half, bringing on Lidl as a new sponsor, and along with it new kits, a new name and even greater ambitions in the WorldTour.

But beneath the surface, the operation isn’t changing much. The same world-class performance management team will oversee a strong and balanced group of men’s and women’s riders, and the team will still build around a culture of camaraderie and development. If anything, the team is doubling down on what has made it successful for years.

Today, Lidl-Trek is announcing the first eight riders to take part in its newly-established development team, with more riders to be announced at a later date. Those eight riders are:

  • Tim Torn Teutenberg (Germany, 20 years old)
  • Mats Wenzel (Luxembourg, 20 years old)
  • Axandre Van Petegem (Belgium, 21 years old)
  • Kristian Egholm (Denmark, 19 years old)
  • Nils Aebersold (Switzerland, 20 years old)
  • Louis Leidert (Germany, 18 years old)
  • Liam O’Brien (Ireland, 18 years old)
  • Patrick Frydkjaer (Denmark, 18 years old)

The development team was one of the road program’s biggest priorities after Lidl became its new partner. The devo team will allow Lidl-Trek to bring in some of the most promising young riders in the world and raise them under a patient, guiding hand at second- and third-tier events. In turn, when those riders are ready for their WorldTour call-ups, they will have already spent plenty of time among their big-name teammates and sports directors to slide into the faster peloton relatively seamlessly.

The team will be registered at Continental level and will be based in Deinze, Belgium, where the Trek Factory Racing service course is located. And accommodations will be made for the young riders, including an option to stay at an apartment in Girona, Spain, where they can enjoy pristine training roads.

The devo team will be managed by Markel Irizar, who has headed up Lidl-Trek’s talent scouting operation since retiring as a rider in 2019. He will be in charge of recruiting and signing young riders to the squad, as well as overseeing their mentorship and performance. The new role is a major promotion for Irizar, and highlights the incredible confidence Lidl-Trek leadership has in his abilities.

The devo team will fundamentally change Irizar’s role with Lidl-Trek. Before, if he wanted to sign a young rider he had scouted, he had to be very sure that they were ready to step directly into the WorldTour, both physically and mentally. With the devo squad, he’ll be under less pressure to bring in polished prospects. Instead, he’ll be able to take in riders who may require significant training and guidance, but who have incredible potential if all goes right.

Irizar explains his role as any good Basque native should: Through cooking.

“In the Basque Country, we have a big cooking culture. Very big,” Irizar says. “In this case, I know that we have very good chefs. A very good kitchen. My job is to go to the market, and I buy very good fish. And if I am able to buy the best meat, I know that my chefs, they’re gonna make something amazing.”

I'm gonna be the chain between the devo team and the World Tour team. ... We need to have the resources that the team will need in the future. - Markel Irizar

The devo team will help Lidl-Trek make sure it can sustain success well into the future. It currently has a solid core of young WorldTour riders like Mads Pedersen (27 years old), Giulio Ciccone (28) and Mattias Skjelmose (22), who were all developed within the program. But the devo team will make sure there’s depth behind them as those riders age, or in case the team finds itself deficient in any area due to unforeseen circumstances like injuries.

Wherever there’s a hole in the WorldTour roster, the hope is that there will be a devo team rider ready to fill it.

“I’m gonna be the chain between the devo team and the World Tour team,” Irizar explains. “If [Lidl-Trek general manager] Luca [Guercilena] tells me, ‘Markel, do we have a super good climber?’ I can say, ‘We have it.’ If he says ‘I need someone who can pull, do you have a strong rider with 80 kilos who can pull for five hours?’ I can say, ‘We have it.’ We need to have the resources that the team will need in the future.”

Irizar is well-suited to lead the devo squad. He’s a recently retired rider who understands how to thrive within the modern peloton. He also has a deep respect and passion for what Lidl-Trek represents as a former 10-year Trek athlete, not to mention a bottomless well of energy.

Irizar has spent the last three-plus years meeting young athletes and their managers alongside race courses and in their homes to assess their fit as Lidl-Trek riders. In his new role, Irizar will spend a little less time on the recruiting trail, and more time mentoring and evaluating riders who are already under the Lidl-Trek umbrella.

He wants riders who can perform well, of course. But just as importantly, Irizar wants riders who appreciate the opportunity to race, and who are eager to be good teammates.

“We need the performance and we want to win races, of course. But it’s super important that we need ambassadors of the values of the brands that are sponsoring the team,” Irizar says. “I want riders that come ready to learn everything. When we win, we enjoy it, but we respect that there are others that aren’t so happy. And when we don’t win, we don’t find excuses. We need to know that we are here because of the fans.”

Irizar will also be involved in recruiting young women’s riders as part of his ongoing development as a scout and DS. Neither he nor Lidl-Trek are done evolving. And with legends like Guercilena lending a hand, Irizar believes the devo team could become one of the most important initiatives of the burgeoning Lidl-Trek era.

“When you are able to buy something fresh and of good quality, with the know-how we have, with the chefs we have, with the kitchen we have, we should have no problem,” Irizar says. “We are gonna cook.”

Lidl-Trek add three up-and-coming talents to 2024 roster

Izzy Sharp, Isabella Holmgren and Ava Holmgren take a big step into the WorldTour

“Elope at the Eclipse”: Nearly 150 couples trek to Ohio get married during total solar eclipse

SENECA COUNTY, Ohio ( WOIO /Gray News) - You know that hit song by Bonnie Tyler from 1983, with the lyrics:

“Once upon a time there was light in my life, but now there’s only love in the dark. Nothing I can say, a total eclipse of the heart.”

Well, it happened in 2024.

On April 8, nearly 150 couples traveled to Seneca County, Ohio for “Elope at the Eclipse” to wed during the total solar eclipse.

Destination Seneca County hosted the free event at the East Green Amphitheater in Tiffin, near Toledo.

Bryce Riggs, Executive Director of Destination Seneca County told WOIO the idea started last year and kept growing.

He said dozens of couples from all over the country registered and obtained marriage licenses, so county leaders decided to do a mass wedding ceremony.

The weddings were officiated by Judge Damon Alt, Seneca County Common Pleas Court.

Riggs said he created a ceremony that would last approximately 4 minutes during totality.

Couples from Georgia, Maryland, South Carolina, Texas, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Ohio were registered to get married.

Riggs told WOIO some couples traveled more than 16,500 miles to Tiffin, Ohio, to begin their lives together in darkness.

Event leaders also hired a photographer to snap photos as well as provided live music for the first dance, champagne for the first toast and a personalized wedding cake.
