A Thousand Horses Rocked it last night at the Wilson Creek Winery. They performed songs that brought everyone to there feet raising their glass of Wine & or Beer. Singing to their Music. What made this an even better experience was how the Venue was set up to accommodate everyone. Not a Bad seat in the place. So when A Thousand Horses came on stage everyone was able to see & hear their Performance!

Almost fell asleep during the show. Very bland performance and seemed like it dragged on forever. The highlight was Travelin' Man to close it out. That was truly the only song they did that they seemed into.

Sound system not very good so not a great experience, but still enjoyable. Venue was a bit of a dive. Don't think I'd go back for a concert there even with the cheap $15 ticket price.

Tickets were never posted as being available.

Guess the show was only for Wofford students. Maybe we can get to the show coming up at the end of the month.

A Thousand Horses

Tour update: a thousand horses reveal a nerve-wrecking confession.

A Thousand Horses are the artists behind the hit single "Preachin to the Choir". The band reveals a nerve-wrecking secret when creating their setlists.

A Thousand Horses

Back in the summer of 2021, the members of Nashville-based band A Thousand Horses headed to a farmhouse in Texas and spent three days writing songs on the front porch with no real agenda. “Over the past few years we’ve all gone through a lot of change in our lives, and we’d gotten to a place where the band felt very splintered and there was so much uncertainty in the air,” recalls guitarist Bill Satcher, who co-founded A Thousand Horses with frontman Michael Hobby, bassist Graham DeLoach, and former guitarist Zach Brown. “We decided to take a weekend to isolate ourselves, and refocus on why we started doing this in the first place.” Inspired by the untamed beauty of their surroundings—a 300-acre creekside ranch overrun with wildflowers and 100-year-old oak trees, the Milky Way shining bright in the night sky—A Thousand Horses soon came up with a wildly life-affirming song called “Highway Sound”: a soul-soothing track that instantly set the tone for their new album The Outside .

“As soon as we wrote ‘Highway Sound,’ it felt like a sign from the universe that we needed to keep going,” says Hobby. “It had that same feeling as when we first started playing music together back when we were kids, and became the focal point for an album that’s all about finding your freedom despite the many forces in life that try to hold you down.”

The third full-length from A Thousand Horses, The Outside finds the band working with Grammy Award-winning producer Jon Randall (Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Parker McCollum) and delving deeper into the freewheeling originality they’ve embraced since their Dave Cobb-produced debut Southernality (a 2015 release featuring their platinum-certified, chart-topping single “Smoke”). In bringing the LP to life, A Thousand Horses mainly recorded at Sound Emporium and Blackbird Studio in Nashville, slowly carving out a one-of-a-kind sound merging elements of Southern Rock, Classic Country, and hard-driving Americana. “There was no deadline or pressure from a label, but at the same time we felt more focused and determined than we ever had before—it was the perfect creative storm,” Satcher says. “Making this record felt like therapy, but it was also so much fun,” adds Hobby. “There were days when we’d look up at the clock and realize we’d been at the studio 16 hours, and we couldn’t wait to go back in the next day. We needed that time and space to do what felt good to us, and not let anything dilute our true creative nature.”

When it came time to name their new album, Thousand Horses chose a title that reflected that newly heightened self-reliance. “ The Outside is a statement of being unapologetically yourself—it’s about being the truest version of who you are, never putting yourself into a box, never falling in line with the current norms or ‘this year’s big thing,’” says DeLoach. “We’re calling this album The Outside in the hopes that people can find self-empowerment in the music: it’s a way to discover your inner fire and use it to light your path. When you live life that way it inspires others to do the same, and the world could use the power of good in it now more than ever. That’s what we want to spread with this album, and The Outside embodies our message.”

The Outside kicks off with the very track that sparked its creation. “‘Highway Sound’ started with the guys playing guitar out on the porch,” Hobby reveals. “I was inside and heard this bad-ass riff, and it hit me right away. Everybody jumped in and we just started rolling—it was as natural as it can get, songwriting-wise.” Opening on the joyful roar of Hobby’s harmonica, “Highway Sound” arrives as a sing-along-ready anthem etched with so many ear-catching details, achieved in part through such unconventional instrumentation as electric sitar and talkbox. “There’s a lyric in ‘Highway Sound’ that says ‘Brand new start, broke in boots/Old baggage left back home,’ which to me really captures the whole spirit of this record,” says Hobby. “It’s about the freedom of cutting ties with the negativity of the past, and putting your energy into celebrating a new beginning.”

A deeply honest unveiling of their dreams and demons and desires, The Outside next launches into the Southern-Rock reverie of “Summer”—a timeless piece of nostalgia-tinged storytelling, adorned with warm Mellotron tones, Satcher’s luminous slide guitar, and a heavenly crescendo of full-band harmonies. “I had this idea to write a song about a girl named Summer and all the unexpected turns that life can take,” says Hobby. “It’s a sad song with a happy feel, and by the end you realize that Summer was the muse of the main character’s life, even though she wasn’t in it for long—everywhere he goes and everywhere he sings, she’s still there in the music he’s playing. I think everybody’s got their own Summer in some special way.”

Over the course of its 12 songs, The Outside sheds light on everything from the thrill of following your own path (on “The Outside,” a powerfully cathartic rock-and-roll anthem) to the sweet relief of finding inner peace (on the gorgeously understated “No News”) to the profound pain of disconnection (on “Strangers,” with heavy-hearted lyrics written by Hobby with Chris Stapleton: “ That’s how you find out/You’re really alone/When a room full of strangers/Starts feeling like home ”). As the album unfolds, A Thousand Horses match its emotional complexity with an equally intricate and unpredictable sound. “We really wanted to explore in the studio, and Jon was the right producer to guide us through that,” Satcher says. “Our thinking behind everything was, ‘If it seems obvious, let’s do the exact opposite.’” To that end, the unbridled instrumental “Southeastern Stomp” emerged from a late-night burst of pure spontaneity, while the slow-burning “Roll On” morphs into an all-out epic at its sublimely explosive bridge. And on “Over The Counter,” A Thousand Horses deliver a darkly hypnotic track fueled by fantastically gritty outlaw-country grooves. “With ‘Over The Counter’ there was no demo or preconceived idea of what the song should be,” DeLoach points out. “It ended up being one of the most creative moments in the whole process of making the record, where we just got together and made everything up on the fly.”

Closing out with the ethereal “Drift Away,” The Outside fully reflects the band’s lifetime devotion to music. As kids growing up in Newberry, South Carolina, Hobby and Satcher first started playing together in high school and soon joined forces with DeLoach (Satcher’s cousin, originally from Savannah, Georgia). “We knew we wanted to make this happen come hell or high water, and we threw everything we had into it,” says Hobby. “Bill and I moved to Nashville when we were 17 and 18, and Graham followed us as soon as he graduated the next year—he got his diploma, hopped in his car, and drove all the way here.” In recent years, Hobby and Satcher supported each other through such life-changing experiences as becoming fathers and getting sober—a turn of events they consider highly influential on the making of The Outside . “It wasn’t a rock-bottom type of decision; it was more of a conscious choice to be better people, better fathers, better musicians, and to apply a very clear vision to everything we do,” says Hobby. “Because of that, we were able to push ourselves in ways that we never had in the past, and maybe weren’t even capable of doing before now.”

Since completing The Outside , A Thousand Horses have endured another major shift: Brown’s departure from the band in early 2023. “Zach had gotten to the point where he needed to be home with his family, which is all part of the natural progression of life,” says Hobby. “We love him and we miss him, but at the end of the day we want Zach to do what’s best for him.” Not only vital to the band’s sense of brotherhood, that belief in emboldening others to live their truth imbues every song on The Outside. “We want people to find their freedom and find their voice in what we’re saying, so they can stand on their own and be proud of who they are,” says Hobby. “The world needs a little healing these days, and hopefully by telling our stories as honestly as we can, we’ll help bring people to a better understanding of whatever it is they’re going through.”

Out Now! A Thousand Horses return with triumphant new album, Broken Heartland

thousand horses band tour

Released today (8/26), BROKEN HEARTLAND adds new dimension to a band once hailed by Rolling Stone as “country music’s new Lynyrd Skynyrd.” It’s a muscular mix of Roadhouse Rock & Roll, Country Drawl, and Southern Soul, performed by four longtime friends who write their own songs, play their own instruments, and call their own shots. This time around, they’re even releasing the album on their own label, Highway Sound Records . A Thousand Horses are truly unfenced, and BROKEN HEARTLAND — with its emphasis on southern storytelling, anthemic melodies, and amplified guitars — shows the full reach of their abilities.

LISTEN TO BROKEN HEARTLAND

We are very excited for BROKEN HEARTLAND , our sophomore full-length album and first release on our label, Highway Sound Records,” says frontman Michael Hobby, who teamed up with his three bandmates — bassist Graham DeLoach and dual guitarists Bill Satcher and Zach Brown — to record the new album. “Behind these 10 songs are one million miles traveled, a thousand shows played, and a whole lot of life lived. We are so happy to be able to share this album with our fans and can’t wait to see everyone out on the road!”

The road has always been kind to A Thousand Horses. Like their heroes, they’ve built their audience the old-school way: by writing classic songs and hitting the highway, performing those songs night after night to enthusiastic crowds. Fittingly, the band will support BROKEN HEARTLAND ‘s release with a handful of high-profile tour dates, including a return to Country music’s most hallowed stage — the Grand Ole Opry — tomorrow (8/27). One month later, they’ll head to Lawrenceville, GA, to serve as hosts and headliners of their very own Southern Wilds Festival .

Previously called Simple Southernality — a name that nodded to A Thousand Horses’ debut album, the Top 5 smash SOUTHERNALITY — Southern Wilds Festival was co-founded by bandmate Brown. It’s a distinctive festival rooted not only in great music, but also community. In other words, it’s a festival that reflects A Thousand Horses’ own values, as well as the values of fellow festival performers like Anderson East and Kidd G .  Check out the details here .

“We’re excited to be hosting the Southern Wilds Festival again this year!” enthuses Brown. “It’s always a special show for us, and this year we’re pumped to be playing songs from the new album. It’s going to be bigger and better than ever!”

To celebrate the release, the group dropped the official music video for their “When I Hear Your Name” written by the enitre band (Bill Satcher, Michael Hobby, Zachary Stephen Brown, Graham DeLoach) and Corey Crowder. Check it out below.

From the release of BROKEN HEARTLAND to the band’s schedule of unique upcoming performances, A Thousand Horses are running free. BROKEN HEARTLAND is available now on all streaming services.

ABOUT A THOUSAND HORSES :A Thousand Horses made history in June 2015, when the band’s “Smoke” became the first debut single for a group to reach No. 1 on the Country Airplay charts in the 2010s. The song went PLATINUM, with the follow-up hit “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial” also cracking Top 40 success. Both singles appeared on their debut album, SOUTHERNALITY , which reached No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Over the years that followed, bandmates Michael Hobby, Bill Satcher, Zach Brown, and Graham DeLoach found similar success on the road, touring the country with acts like Jason Aldean and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Reclaiming their independence in 2022, A Thousand Horses has now launched a new chapter of their acclaimed career with releases “Broken Heartland” and “Another Mile” on their own newly announced label, Highway Sound Records. Continuing to showcase their signature blend of Country music and American Rock & Roll, A Thousand Horses’ highly anticipated sophomore album BROKEN HEARTLAND is out now.

A Thousand Horses - Artist Page

Considering they’ve only been in the public gaze for a couple of years now A Thousand Horses already sound like the real thing and look like contenders, though they’ll tell you they’re just work in progress. Their debut self-titled EP and the first album Southernality – think Southern/Personality – are full of strong narrative songs that have been composed within the group. Michael Hobby handles the lead vocals but Zach Brown, Graham DeLoach and Bill Satcher complete a quartet of harmonised delight. Very much cast in the modern country idiom but with an eye on the classic past they’ve hit big with the singles “Smoke” (a country airplay number one in June 2015), “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial” and the title track “ Southernality ”.

All chime with a like-minded audience who have no doubt grown up listening to the band’s own heroes – the likes of Lynyrd Skynyrd , Tom Petty , The Black Crowes and those Anglo bands who perfected hardcore rootsy blues with plenty of swagger back in the 1970s. Nominated for an ACM, Southernality made it into the Top 40 Country Albums of 2105 by Rolling Stone while “Smoke” also made it into their Top 25 songs of the year. The folks at Whiskey Riff followed suit, praising the band’s fresh approach and comparing them favourably to Skynyrd and The Cadillac Three . The old and the new gallop along in their sound.

While A Thousand Horses have located to Nashville, Tennessee, and are signed to Republic Nashville, founding members Michael Hobby and Bill Satcher were trading songs on acoustics as teenagers in Newberry, South Carolina, a pleasant settlement otherwise known for its many sports stars and gorgeous local landmark, the Art Deco chrome and neon Ritz Theatre. Oh and don’t forget the town’s local music store where the two 15-year olds would hang out testing the guitars and maybe the owner’s patience. So small town in other words. No matter, our young heroes had plenty of ambition and the duo became a trio when Satcher’s cousin Graham DeLoach moved up from Savannah, Georgia, bringing his bass. He turned a holiday into a career commitment. Zach Brown arrived via mutual acquaintance and he too left Georgia – Atlanta – to complete a properly Dixie style quartet. There were other bands with other names, of course, but A Thousand Horses were officially born in March 2010, named after a song on their debut EP, A Thousand Horses. They were a quintet for a while with drummer Jonathan Carman, out of Charleston, SC holding down the backbeat.

Even while their infrastructure crumbled and was painstakingly rebuilt they won a deal via Interscope Records though it wasn’t yet easy to nail their sound down. As Satcher recalls “Our influences are as deeply rooted in English rock music as they are Country music”. He cites some personal faves as Petty, Dwight Yoakam, and Noel Gallagher. The Led Zep mantra was always popping up but nowadays they will also cite kindred spirits like Eric Church and Jesse Aldean as well as established acts such as Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks and Confederate Railroad. Good music is simply that, in their book.

Their own road was the traditional one of living in a van, sharing food and meeting the people who populate their songs. The big break was hooking up with producer Dave Cobb who has sparkled magic dust over everyone from Rival Sons and Shooter Jennings (also Waylon Jennings posthumous Forever album) to California Breed, Chris Stapleton and Holly Williams.

Cobb has brought out the Horses core live sound, that being his speciality, and kept the whole thing honest and rough around the edges. The hit single “Smoke” is a genuine Southern rock groove with Robby Turner adding pedal steel and there are simpatico backing vocals from Whitney Coleman and Kristen Rogers. Producer/songwriter Ross Copperman is the collaborator. Additional specialists are the drummer Chris Powell, multi-instrumentalist Brian Purwin and keyboards player Michael Webb.

The Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson helped co-write the outstanding “Sunday Morning” while Brad and Brett Warren brought their experience to bear on the closing song, “Where I’m Going” with its vintage churchy organ feel. The Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston has worked with them from the off. He co-wrote “Suicide Eyes” from the EP, which ended up on the Footloose soundtrack and joined in with the hard-rocking live favourite “Travelin’ Man” on the current album.

So a new band to discover, though not quite an outfit that just walked out of the woods. A Thousand Horses are several years in the making, which accounts for their ability to play and project. We love it. Try a blast of “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial” for a taste of Hobby’s gritty, hook-laden writing, all laced with a tasty fiddle and a heartfelt lyric.

After a False Start, A Thousand Horses Regain Their Footing on New Album With Dave Cobb

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

A Thousand Horses charged out of the gate when they released their debut country single “Smoke” in 2015. The mid-tempo ballad about an addictive relationship climbed to Number One and teed up the band to be Nashville stars: they did TV , toured with Darius Rucker, played Bonnaroo. But just like the hit song’s title, that quick success dissolved in a wisp. The follow-up “(This Ain’t No) Drunk Dial,” another mid-tempo track, failed to ignite, and when the group finally did release something that showed them to be the rock band they are — the title track to their debut country LP, Southernality — their moment was all but gone.

A mishmash EP of new songs and live recordings with Music Row producer Dann Huff followed, but the band and their label home Big Machine soon realized it was time to part ways.

“They did a lot for us, but they knew we had to go be a band,” says Horses singer Michael Hobby, squeezed into a booth with his bandmates at Nashville hipster haven the Dive Motel on a rainy Monday afternoon.

“We got to a place and they got to a place at the same time where it was ‘I don’t think we’re helping each other right now,'” says guitarist Zach Brown.

By the Horses’ account, it was a quick and amiable split (afterward, they went out for drinks with their former bosses), but most importantly the exit afforded them the opportunity to reunite with producer Dave Cobb , who oversaw the raw and gritty material that first got them signed to Big Machine. Hustling into RCA Studio A with Cobb, they cut 10 new songs live on the studio floor.

“We were totally independent by that point and we had no agenda other than let’s just make an album that represents us in the best way,” says Brown. “We didn’t want to put a bunch of stuff on it that would be hard to do live or try to make a song better by putting some random instrument on it. Just let it stand on its own.”

This spring, A Thousand Horses — Hobby, Brown, guitarist Bill Satcher, and bassist Graham DeLoach — will release the fruits of those sessions, the full-length album Let the Band Play On , on Cobb’s Elektra Records imprint Low Country Sound.

At 36 minutes, the LP is a tight, satisfying listen, underscoring the band’s commitment to trimming the fat. Nothing feels forced, there’s an emphasis on melody, and Hobby allows his voice to come across more naturally (gone is the sometimes constricted whine of the past). It’s the sound of a group that isn’t chasing trends. Tracks like “Never Liked the Rain,” inspired by a family member’s divorce, and the toxic-relationship ballad “Startin’ Fires” are far from backwoods-party anthems. But A Thousand Horses insist a return to radio, via songs like the optimistic “Livin’ My Best Life” and the jangly “Broken Heartland,” is very much a part of their plan.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“We’re not your traditional country artists, and we never have been,” says Hobby. “It’s what separates us and makes us different from everyone else. We want to stand on our own feet and create our own lane and path, and make records that we enjoy listening to. With Dave, his side is a different world, but the common thread was to make a kickass record. And radio will be a part of that.”

The group’s kinship with Cobb, who has become the go-to Americana producer for his work with Jason Isbell and Chris Stapleton, goes back 10 years to Los Angeles, when the band — still without a name — gathered in a Silver Lake studio to work on songs, all the while pinching themselves that kids from South Carolina and Georgia somehow made it to the promised land of California. They left the studio as A Thousand Horses and were briefly signed to Interscope before getting dropped. Big Machine’s Republic Nashville eventually scooped them up.

For Let the Band Play On , the Horses hoped to tap into the old us-against-the-world magic that they conjured with Cobb.

“We’ve really come full circle at this point. We went back to the basics. We had songs we really believed in, called up Dave, and went to Hooters,” says Brown.

“In Hooters,” Hobby laughs, “we decided to make a record.”

The album title comes from something Hobby ad libbed at the end of recording the barroom twanger “Drinkin’ Song.” As the group lost themselves in an extended jam, he shouted, “Let the band play on!”

“That one statement encapsulated the feeling of the record,” says Satcher.

Adds DeLoach, “It’s our mission statement.”

While the entire band wrote “Drinkin’ Song,” Hobby and Satcher collaborated on the bulk of the album’s tracks with writers like Kendell Marvel, Lee Thomas Miller, and Jonathan Singleton. “Broken Heartland,” written with Singleton and the late Andrew Dorff, was an older song that Hobby and Satcher had been sending back and forth to each other, confident that it was worth one day finishing.

“‘Broken Heartland’ is a place we’ve all been,” says Hobby, “where there’s a bar there for you to come.”

“And have the saddest, most lonely time,” adds Brown, finishing the thought.

Brandi Carlile, Dierks Bentley to Headline 2020 Shaky Boots Festival

Lynyrd skynyrd recruit styx, blackberry smoke for 2020 simple man jam.

After spending most of their career on Republic Nashville alongside country-radio hitmakers like Florida Georgia Line and the Band Perry, A Thousand Horses now find themselves on an imprint that releases albums by more rootsy performers: Brandi Carlile, Brent Cobb, and Anderson East, among them. Country radio goals aside, the association could put the band in front of a different audience. They’ve already been booked to play the eclectic Shaky Boots Festival in Atlanta this summer, on a bill that includes Carlile, John Prine, Tanya Tucker, Colter Wall, and fellow country-rockers Whiskey Myers.

“It feels really good to be in the company we’re in on our label,” says Brown. “It’s a cool place to be.”

The band members all agree, but Hobby, like he did with the album’s title, can’t help but boil down the on-the-nose appeal of Let the Band Play On .

“We’re a country rock & roll band,” he says matter-of-factly. “If you’re a fan of that type of music, you’ll probably dig it.”

Description

The high-powered new single from A Thousand Horses, “Highway Sound” marks the start of the most dynamic era yet in the Nashville-based band’s career.  Produced by GRAMMY® award-winner Jon Randall, the wildly life-affirming anthem delves deeper into the freewheeling originality they’ve embraced since their Dave Cobb-produced debut “SOUTHERNALITY”—featuring the PLATINUM-certified smash “Smoke”—and art fully merges elements of Southern Rock, Classic Country, and hard-driving Americana. Along with adorning the track with plenty of ear-catching details (achieved in part through such left-of-center instrumentation as electric sitar and talk box), A Thousand Horses fully captures what frontman Michael Hobby refers to as “the freedom of cutting ties with the negativity of the past and putting your energy into celebrating a new beginning.” Written after a period of intense change in their personal lives, “Highway Sound” first took shape over the course of a weekend trip to a Texas farmhouse in summer 2021, during which Hobby, guitarist Bill Satcher, bassist Graham DeLoach, and former guitarist Zach Brown came up with the song during an impromptu session on the porch.

A major leap forward for A Thousand Horses, “Highway Sound” spotlights the powerful musicianship and soulful urgency first revealed on “SOUTHERNALITY”—a 2015 LP that reached #3 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, with “Smoke” earning recognition as the first debut single for a group to reach #1 on the Country Airplay charts that decade. Soon after launching their own label, Highway Sound Records, A Thousand Horses returned with their 2022 sophomore album “BROKEN HEARTLAND,” featuring standouts like “When I Hear Your Name,” “Another Mile,” and “Never Liked the Rain.” Known for their incendiary live show, A Thousand Horses have also toured the country with iconic acts like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Kid Rock, and more.

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
