Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Baby

General Visiting Information:

Location : 10 km North of Chiang Mai.  Just past Mae Rim where Hwy 107 meets County Road 1096 ( every driver knows where it is, but we detail it below ).  They also have a second location in Phuket near Patong Beach which is just as good.  We added it on this map as Stop #18 just North of Chiang Mai.

Hours : Daily 9am-6pm.  You should assume that it will take between 2 1/2-4 hours for a visit.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Baby

Cost : Smallest ( 2-3 Months ) 700 Baht; Small ( 4-8 Months ) 500 Baht; Medium ( 9-12 Months ) 500 Baht; Big Cat ( 13-30 Months ) 600 Baht.  Some people complain about the cost, but we felt it was appropriate and there are discounts for visiting multiple areas.  A full-time worker that specializes in each age group will be with you the entire time to ensure safety.  Accident insurance is included in the price just in case, and discounts are available when viewing multiple enclosures.

Photographer : You can always bring your own camera or hire their photographer for 299 Baht per cage which includes a CD of 50-100 photos when you leave.  We really like hiring their photographer, as it lets you focus on just having fun and enjoying it – plus they already know all the good angles.

Common Visitor Questions:

How do you get to Tiger Kingdom ?: There is no need to book a tour since getting there is very easy and any cab driver in Chiang Mai will know what Tiger Kingdom is. Expect to pay 500-700 Baht for a round trip taxi for 4 people which includes the taxi waiting for you the entire time you are there. You’ll pay the taxi at the end.

How long do you get to spend with the Tigers ?: You get to spend about 15 minutes per age group, but they usually stretch this to 15-20 if you have a group or get their photographer.  A typical trip including round trip taxi and time in 3 enclosures will take about 2-3 hours.

Are the Tigers Sedated or Drugged ?: No, the Tigers here are not sedated which is a huge problem at other tiger places, especially the Tiger Temple near Bangkok.  The tigers here are very active, which is the most obvious sign they are not sedated.  The second, less obvious sign is that 30 months old is the oldest tiger you’ll be able to interact with.  Adult tigers are often too dangerous and unpredictable for even professional handlers and it would be unethical to let you in. Chances are, any place letting you get close to tigers aged 30 months or older are either drugging or sedating them.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Baby Bottle Feeding

Is Tiger Kingdom Safe ?: No one has died…. yet.  We found our experience to be extremely safe and the staff not only treats the Tigers well, but doe a great drop making both you and Tigers feel comfortable.  The oldest Tigers you can visit are only 30 months old which helps to make it safer and they play with the bigger ones enough to keep them from being too wound up

The Tigers aren’t sedated so you do have to use common sense by avoiding fast movements or getting by their heads.  Petting them firm helps too so they don’t think you are a fly.  The safety training and constant re-enforcement was welcomed and better than we expected.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Big Cats

Our Recent Visit To The Tiger Kingdom:

Our group of four arrived in Chiang Mai around noon, checked into our hotel and headed straight to the Tiger Kingdom!   Flagging down a taxi was very quick and he knew right where the Tiger Kingdom was, but we were shocked when he told us it would cost 600 Baht to go just 10 km which was almost more than double what we expected.  Why so much?  He quickly let us know that it included round-trip transport and that he would wait for us however long we wanted to stay.  It seemed a little weird, but he said we can pay him at the end, so we got in.  In only about 20 minutes we got to Tiger Kingdom as Chiang Mai traffic is not too busy.  Along the way he pointed out other places he would take us and wait for us afterward such as the Snake Farm for 200 Baht or Doi Suthep Temple ( more info ) for 400 Baht.

Deciding which ages of tigers we wanted to see was a harder task than we thought.  After some debate, our group settled on a 3-Cage package which included Smallest ( 2-3 Months ), Medium ( 9-12 Months ), & Big Cats ( 13-30 Months ) which worked out to under 1,400 Baht a person.  We also decided to hire their photographer for the Smallest and Big Cat enclosures at 299 Baht per cage, although we also had our own professional camera with us.  Our rationale was that they know the tigers better, we may only get to do it once in our lifetime, it let us focus more on having fun, and with our group of 4 it was only $2.50 American dollars to get the photographer for each cage.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Love

After getting our package purchased, there was a couple minutes of down time until our group was called, but then we were off to see the Smallest Tigers ( 2-3 Months ) !  For the health of the young tigers, we had to wash our hands and switch from our shoes/sandals to their flip flops before entering, a step not needed for the older cats.  The anticipation mounted as we moved to join the 2-3 other groups already in the large enclosure.  Inside were about a dozen young cubs, and it was remarkably clean.

As the worker assigned to our group walked us to our first set of cubs I got worried as one of them looked like we was sick or drugged.  Another worker quickly checked on him and he was totally fine, playful, and he had just been sleeping.  All of the cubs were very lively and loving, which was a relief as it was a big concern of mine going into the visit (most other tiger places in Asia, most notably the Tiger Temple near Bangkok, constantly drug their tigers to keep them calm, which is horrible).  Playing with the cubs was awesome and they were very vocal, would pounce each other, and seemed to go from sleepy to play-mode within a second.  The biggest highlight was when we asked our worker if we could bottle-feed a tiger, and he mixed up some formula right away.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Play Time

Next up we choose the Big Cats ( 13-30 Months ) cage which was a little intimidating as they were absolutely huge for only being 13-30 months old adolescents. While entering, our worker took us through a double gate to ensure the Big Cats don’t get out and he went through safety instructions.  All four Big Cats were just lounging around and we dove right in petting them and taking pictures.  It was fun using their tails as makeshift mustaches although we operated very cautiously so we didn’t get our heads bit off.  The worker and photographer made both us and the large cats feel at ease, and reminded us if we got too close to a tiger’s head or front paws.  It was surprising when they encouraged us to firmly pet the tigers as petting too light may feel either like tickles or flies to the Big Cats.  To help keep the larger tigers in a good mood, the workers would toss toys into the pool from time to time which the tigers would spring up for and chase.  If you ever needed proof that the Tiger Kingdom doesn’t sedate their tigers you just have to watch how fast they spring up and run for their toys.  The Big Cats loved swimming in the pool and climbing the trees inside the enclosure.  We always felt 100% safe and comfortable during our time with the Big Cats and I’m glad their size didn’t scare us away.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Sleeping

The last of the 3 enclosures we checked out was the Medium Cats ( 9-12 Months ) . Just like the Big Cats, they were bigger than we expected for their age.  They were the size of huge full-grown dogs.  The coolest thing about the Medium Cats is that all they wanted to do was play, play, play.  They are too big to directly play with, but the trainer had a long pole with a palm tassel on the end, which he used to play with them just like you would have a string on a stick with a house cat.  The Medium Cats seemed to love running up the trees and diving into the tiger pool!  Because the medium sized cats were more rambunctious and running all over the place, it created a great contrast with the other ages we spent time with and really made it worth it.

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Baby

Looking back on it we always felt safe, always felt that the tigers were treated great, and the workers really seemed like they loved what they do.  Our visit to the Tiger Kingdom will stick with us forever and we hope you get a chance to make it there as well.  Just after spending a day at the Patara Elephant Camp ( more info ), the Tiger Kingdom is our second biggest must-see Chiang Mai attraction.  Tiger Kingdom is close to the city, only takes a couple hours, and is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so you have no excuse to not visit the Tiger Kingdom while in Chiang Mai.  Maybe you’ll get lucky on your trip and they will even have a new little lion cubs to visit in addition to all the wonderful Tigers.  Have fun and bring your camera!

Chiang Mai Tigers Kingdom Paw

Other Sights Near Tiger Kingdom:

The coolest thing to add on to a trip to Tiger Kingdom is the Baan Tong Luang Village which features a 5 Hill Tribe exhibition village.  The exhibition village isn’t as authentic as the more rural stand alone villages, but it will give you a great opportunity to learn about the different Tribes.  Three of our favorite Tribes to visit here are the Hmong ( Meo ), Big Earring ( Akha ) and the Long Necks ( Karen ).  You’ll be able to take photos with the women and we encourage you to buy unique souvenirs from them.  There is also a snake farm nearby, but it is a little cheesy.  These sights are all just a little further down Hwy 1096 just West of Tiger Kingdom.

Unforgettable Experience Tiger's Welfare is top of priority

What is tiger world what is tiger world.

IMG_0988.JPG

Tiger World is an officially licensed facility in Thailand. While we are designated as a zoo, we distinguish ourselves from traditional zoos by refraining from the sale of our tigers, prioritizing the welfare of these majestic creatures as our foremost concern. Unlike some well-known zoos in Thailand that confine their tigers and may be associated with dubious activities involving illegal tiger parts, we vehemently reject such practices.

At Tiger World, we offer unparalleled opportunities to engage in world-class animal encounters and educational experiences. One of our most sought-after and thrilling activities involves the unique experience of having a tiger on your shoulders and bottle-feeding our 9-year-old Euro tigers. Alternatively, you can spend quality time sitting with and gently stroking them, all under the careful supervision of our experienced keepers, ensuring the well-being of both our visitors and tigers.

The Three Best Places to See Wild Tigers in Thailand

Wild tigers are some of the most magnificent creatures that roam the planet. It’s a real privilege to witness one in the wild, but it’s not easy. If you want to spot tigers in the wild when in Thailand, here are your best options.

There are approximately 160 Indochinese tigers that live in the wild in Thailand. They are critically endangered and spotting one in its natural habitat is not easy. Authorities are making every effort to save the wild tiger but it will require patience, persistence, and a lot of luck to spot one.

We have taken the time to find the best places and those with the highest chance of spotting a wild tiger to leave you in awe and tick one more item off your bucket list.

Where Can I See Tigers in the Wild?

Thailand, where about 160 Indochinese tigers still remain in the wild, is doing its best to save this critically endangered species.  The Southeast Asian nation has set up a tiger conservation center in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, local forest rangers are trained to keep a lookout for these rare big cats. They also keep a sharp eye out for the tiger’s main prey, like the guar and deer, whose numbers have also decreased due to illegal hunting and poaching.

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary

Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys the largest population of tigers in Thailand; it’s also the easiest to spot tigers because of its good visibility, allowing visitors better opportunities to spot tigers in the forest. It helps that there are lots of open areas, three watchtowers, and a tiger nature trail.

There is no guarantee you will spot a wild tiger no matter how many times you visit. The best place to try is the visitor center, with many sightings recorded there. Visitors often report hearing the tigers roar, even if they don’t spot one.

Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary

Thung Yai Naresuan is a protected area with its own administration, but it adjoins Huai Kha making one single conservation area, the largest in mainland South-East Asia. The two cover a total area of  622,200 ha; they are both world heritage sites and have been since 1991.

Tiger Numbers Are Up

About ten years ago, the combined sanctuaries were home to 42 tigers. Today that number sits at 89, and with great effort and care, that number is slowly climbing.

What Other Animals Can You See In These Wildlife Sanctuaries?

Even if you don’t get lucky and spot a tiger, these conservation areas contain a tapestry of exotic animals, including elephants, banteng, leopards, and an array of birdlife to keep twitchers happy for hours.

Spot the Rare Wild Tiger in Khao Sok

Khao Sok lies conveniently on the mainland between Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, and Koh Samui, the most visited destinations in Southern Thailand. Unfortunately, while the park is home to some of the rarest species on the planet, it has only a few tigers, which have not been seen in years.

The park is still worth a visit, who knows you might  be the one to post a pic of an endangered tiger in Khao Sok, but while you are looking,  pay attention as the park is also home to:

  • More than 300 species of bird
  • Close to 50 different mammals.
  • 30+ species of bats!
  • More insects and reptiles than there are stars in the sky
  • Close to 200 wild Asian elephants

Pang Sida National Park

Pang Sida covers 325 miles² and forms part of the Kaeo Province; it is situated within the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai Forest Complex. Pang Sida was declared a national park in 1982; there is a small population of tigers, with recent camera traps recording between 10 and 15 different tigers.

The only way to get to this park is by your own transport, but there is unique wildlife and bird watching and beautiful campsites and waterfalls to enjoy. However, if it’s tigers you’re out to see, check with a ranger; they will give you the  best advice on the routes to travel to provide you with the best chance of spotting one of these elusive, endangered animals.  Most of the exotic mammals will be hiding in the dense forest, so you’ll need time, patience, and a lot of luck to spot a wild tiger.

Camera Footage Proves Existence of Wild Tigers in Khao Yai

Khao Yai National Park is Thailand’s first national park. Established in 1962, it is the third-largest national park in the country. For a long time, it was thought that there were no remaining tigers in the park with no sighting since 2002. That was until footage emerged of 18 tigers, 12 adults, and five cubs living in the forest. There are 126 surveillance cameras installed, and these tiger sightings were recorded between June 2016 and February 2017.

These images of the wild tigers were exciting news, especially for those who thought they had vanished from the area. Now, the footage serves to confirm a second breeding population of the Indochinese tiger. The terrain, which coversan area of  837 square miles, is a mixture of tropical forest and grasslands. There are thousands of species of plants, hundreds of different birds, including some rare species, but even with the existence of tigers now confirmed, it is still tricky to spot them, as they tend to stay in the densest part of the forest.

Said John Goodrich, program director at Panthera, a wild cat preservation group, commented, “The extraordinary rebound of eastern Thailand’s tigers is nothing short of miraculous.”

The Amazing Wild Tiger –  Nature’s Apex Predator

The tiger is one of the biggest and heaviest big cats out there; the males tend to be bigger than the females but differ according to their sub-species. Tigers are massively strong but are also good athletes. They can easily climb a tree even with prey in their mouth, and they are excellent swimmers with the ability to cross rivers a few miles wide.  Not your average cat, this tiger. They generally range in territories of about 20 – 40 sq miles.

What do Tigers Eat?

Tigers are strictly meat eaters and will eat any animal they can catch. They are incredible athletes and can run at speeds of between 35 to 40 mph. However, despite their athletic prowess, they prefer the ambush method instead of the long chase. They are hungry, though, and can eat up to 40 kg in one sitting. They don’t eat every day, so when they make a catch, they make it count. While meat is their staple diet, they occasionally eat vegetation to help with their metabolism.

Why Are There So Few Tigers in the Wild?

Southeast Asia used to be a pristine wilderness area, where Indochinese tigers enjoyed unlimited access to their natural habitat and could roam and feed with impunity. They were the apex predators at that time. In the 19th century, there were close to 100 000 wild tigers roaming all over Asia; today, there is about 4% of that number left, and conservationists are working tirelessly to save the tiger from extinction, which they say may happen in the next decade or two.

Why did the Tigers Disappear?

Unfortunately, humans have caused these magnificent creatures to disappear almost entirely from the planet. As the human populace increased, urban creep started encroaching on the tigers’ natural habitat, forcing the tigers to retreat to their last few areas of forest refuge. But their numbers dropped dramatically when people began hunting tigers for their pelts and bones to sell on the black market. They were almost hunted to extinction. Today, there are no longer any tigers in Vietnam or Cambodia, and Thailand has only about 160 at last count.

Are There Other Places to see Tigers in Thailand?

The answer is yes, but these are enclosed sanctuaries aimed at the tourist market. Seeing a tiger and even entering its cage is popular amongst tourists but not advisable. Many of these places have been accused of not caring for these animals properly and exploiting these creatures for profit. These are not wild tigers; most are bred in captivity and can never be released into the wild.

Tiger Kingdom

This is a touristy, for-profit place which allows you to see tigers up close. These are not wild tigers but are bred in captivity to make money. People love the selfie with a tiger scenario, but there have been many reports of the animals being mistreated, and anyone who loves big cats should rather stay away.

The Tiger Temple

The Tiger Temple was started and run by Buddhists. They received their first tiger cub back in 1999, and the temple has been dogged in controversy ever since with accusations of illegal breeding and trafficking. The place was once popular with tourists, who loved the idea of the Buddhist conservationist and of taking pics up close and personal with tigers and cubs. The authorities raided the temple in 2016, and in addition to 40 dead cubs, the police found a range of items made from tiger parts which they were selling as souvenirs. In total, the authorities removed 147 live tigers. The temple was closed down as a tiger sanctuary.

Conservation vs. Profit

The good news for those who enjoy wild animals being wild is that Thailand’s tiger population is on the increase. This is thanks to the Thai government and conservation groups fighting every day to protect the wild population and hopefully see their numbers return to what they once were 100 years ago. This is not easy, with poachers and hunters always trying to be one step ahead of the authorities. It takes a lot of money and effort to combat this evil, but Thailand seems to be winning for now.

They understand the benefit of preserving their natural heritage, both fauna and flora. Their tourism industry depends on it, and so do thousands of employees around the country who benefit directly or indirectly from a healthy tourism industry.

The Profiteers

Anyone who watched Tiger King, the Netflix hit series, will have noticed the shady nature of people involved with the so-called “animal sanctuaries” Unfortunately, Thailand is no different. People have realized the value of tigers, no matter how cruel it is. The worst part is they portray themselves as Tiger conservationists but are nothing of the sort. They are greedy people with no interest in their animals’ well-being. Animals are forced to be docile and trained to perform tricks for treats. Many are locked in cages all day, in conditions that are nothing close to their natural habitat. The Buddhist temple was shut down for these reasons. However, despite a history of maltreatment, the Tiger Kingdom remains open, ready to welcome selfie-seeking tourists by the thousands. The tigers hate it, and so should you. There are other tiger parks, not unlike the above two, but we won’t be visiting them here.

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is attempting to make it illegal to trade in tiger products. Many of these products are sold to well-heeled buyers who desire them for their aesthetic beauty or the promise of improved health and sexual vitality. They are also trying to cut down on illegal breeding facilities as they are undermining Thailand’s efforts to reduce demand for tiger products and further reduce poaching.

Thailand is Serious About Saving its Wild Tiger Population

As serious as they are, there is no guarantee of success. Poaching and hunting continue, although not on a scale of previous years. Rangers are being trained to deal with these poachers and hunters, but criminals are persistent, especially when large sums of money are made.

Their focus is currently on protecting the western forest – one of the last secure habitats of the local wild tiger population. It is not only Thailand’s tigers that are at risk, but the planet’s population of roughly 4000 tigers is also all at risk, and the tiger may become extinct in our lifetime. That is a tragedy. That should not be allowed to happen.

Find Your Inner Wild Tiger in Thailand

The three best places to spot wild tigers are Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, Khao Yai, and Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary. All are different, but all have wild tigers, that with some persistence and luck, you will enjoy the privilege of spotting.
