It may be impossible to imitate Japanese street style, but some inspiration never harmed anyone – hanging out with Harajuku’s cool kids is the place to start. Find out what’s next in tech in Akihabara, possibly the most ahead-of-the-curve electronics district on Earth; go shopping in Shibuya or Ginza; eat sushi for breakfast at Tsukiji Outer Market or Toyosu; join the millions of daily commuters passing through the world’s busiest train station, Shinjuku; or run for the hills, literally, with a hike up Mount Fuji, on the edge of the city and prettily visible from regular vantage points throughout.

Seeing the world’s most celebrated explosion of cherry blossom might be on most bucket lists – and sakura-enhanced spring is indeed a lovely time to visit the city – but Tokyo is equally attractive year-round, though high summer gets a little hot and humid for some.

Within the Otemachi Tower, Tokyo’s Aman outpost pays tribute to its backdrop with ryokan-style rooms, ikebana flower displays and washi paper doors. The hotel is home to some of the biggest rooms in the city, and the spacious (and serene) two-storey spa is vast, too. Unsurprisingly, the cool, calm interiors are temple-worthy, with huge windows framing the frenetic streets below, and a meditation garden for added inner peace.

Anyone missing their furry friends back home should head to one of Tokyo’s many animal-manned establishments. The craze began with cat cafés but has now expanded to the point of visitors being able to have coffee with a capybara (at the Capy Neko Cafe in Kichijoji). Join the queue at assorted outlets for a cuddle with micro pigs, owls, hedgehogs, snakes, dogs and, of course, the original fluffy felines – we love Cat Cafe Mocha , which has branches across the city.

Ginza is one of Tokyo’s most well-heeled neighbourhoods and it has the designer boutiques, jewellery shops and department stores to prove it. The main street that runs through it, Chuo-Dori, helpfully becomes a pedestrian zone on weekend afternoons – and once you’ve reached purchase capacity, there’s the Kabuki-za theatre for traditional dance (and a well-earned rest).

The Harajuku girls may get all of the attention, but you'll find amazing street style practically everywhere you go in Tokyo – start in the Harajuku by all means, but don't miss Shibuya, Daikanyama and Aoyama. Minimalism will never feel the same again.

The best hotels in Tokyo, according to Travel + Leisure readers, are hospitality stalwarts that connect luxury travelers to Japanese food and culture.

Tokyo is a city of welcome contradictions: sparkling skyscrapers next to tranquil, Zen-like gardens; centuries-old temples coexisting with only-in-Japan technologies. These contrasts can also be found in the city's many hotels, from beloved brands to lesser-known, historic ryokan. And this year, Travel + Leisure readers showed a special appreciation for Tokyo's luxury chain properties.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.

Two Hilton hotels — the Conrad Tokyo (No. 2) and Hilton Tokyo (No. 5) scored big with readers, the former being applauded for its "friendly and attentive personnel." Meanwhile, the ANA InterContinental Tokyo (No. 3) was touted for its location in the heart of Tokyo — and "fantastic service and selection of different restaurants."

At No. 4, Aman Tokyo offers beautiful views of the city — and, if you're lucky, even Mount Fuji, since it occupies the top six floors of the Otemachi Tower. The property strikes a balancing act between traditional and modern design, with washi paper doors, ryokan-style rooms, and ikebana (Japanese flower) displays.

1. Grand Hyatt Tokyo

Conveniently nestled within ritzy Roppongi Hills — a massive and lively complex with luxury boutiques, a variety of restaurants, and top museums — the Grand Hyatt Tokyo manages to maintain an aura of calm. Part of that is design (warm woods, limestone bathrooms, a red-granite indoor swimming pool) and part is its sprawling spa, which has a sauna, a steam room, and plunge pools. Also earning it the top spot in this year's list: seven restaurants — from sushi to a steakhouse and French cuisine — three bars, an impressive art collection, and beautiful accommodations, including the Presidential Suite, which has sweeping views of the city, a heated outdoor pool, and a private garden.

Home to a dazzling line-up of five-star hotels, unforgettable cultural attractions, and the most Michelin restaurants in the world (yes, even more than Paris itself), Tokyo has fascinated the most discerning luxury travelers for decades. Now, thanks in part to the weak yen and pent-up demand after more than two years of closed borders, the country is more accessible than ever before. (By far the most popular destination for young travelers, bookings to Japan in general have increased by 1,300% since 2019).

From staying in a hotel with views of Mount Fuji to soaking in a hot spring fit for royalty, here are some of the most extraordinary, one-of-a-kind things to do in and around Tokyo when price isn’t an object.

Get Lost In Translation

The most memorable character in Sofia Coppola’s beloved early aughts masterpiece Lost in Translation isn’t Scarlett Johansson’s aimless Charlotte or Bill Murray’s erring Bob — it’s the effortlessly cool hotel where the majority of the movie’s action takes place. At the real-life Park Hyatt Tokyo , guests can swim laps in a 26 x 65 foot pool surrounded by panoramic views of Tokyo’s skyline, sip pitch-perfect martinis in the 52nd floor’s sultry New York Bar, and peek at a snow-peaked Mount Fuji while savoring a full Japanese breakfast. In a city brimming with luxury properties, Park Hyatt Tokyo continues to feel literally and symbolically above the rest.

Eat Record-Setting Seafood

Tokyo is known for its iconic Toyosu fish market, where you can eat fresh sushi, watch fishmongers hard at work, and even see record-setting sales — in 2023, one bluefin tuna fetched ¥36.04 million ($273,000). While attending a tuna auction simply requires waking up very, very early, eating the prized catch calls for more planning. Your best bet: Book a month ahead at two-Michelin star Narisawa , a stalwart on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants List . Chef Yoshihiro Narisawa has a close relationship with “Last King of Tuna” Yukitaka Yamaguchi , who frequently bids top dollar on the day’s top cuts. Alongside the exceptional fish, enjoy a decadent, omakase menu of grilled eel, wagyu, and other local delicacies.

Soak Up Japan’s Culture

For many, soaking in the healing waters of an onsen — a type of hot spring that must contain at least one of Japan’s 19 official mineral elements, such as sulfur and sodium chloride — is the epitome of zen. To immerse yourself in this ancient custom, Adrian Fautt, Park Hyatt Tokyo’s Chief Concierge, recommends checking into a ryokan , a traditional Japanese inn, overnight. (Most natural springs are located outside cities — fortunately, Hakone, a town known for its hot springs, is about an hour away by train).

Fautt’s pick is the elegant Gora Kadan , located on the grounds of the former summer villa of a member of the Imperial family. “It's right at the top of the mountains,” he says. “I would leave Tokyo in the early morning, spend half the day exploring the town of Hakone, and come back to the ryokan in the afternoon to enjoy the onsen before an elaborate dinner. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll be able to go to the onsen one more time before you check out.”

Try A Cocktail Tasting Menu

You’ve certainly heard of tasting menus at restaurants — but what about at cocktail bars? At Gen Yamamoto , master mixologist Yamamoto creates a mind-bending menu of low-ABV drinks. Served omakase-style, a Japanese phrase that literally means “I leave it up to you,” the only thing that customers have to decide is how many cocktails they want. (Trust me, you need all seven offered in a seating). Yamamoto thoughtfully selects fine liquors from around the world to showcase seasonal produce in surprising flavor combinations, like coffee and anise-flavored Coretto from Croatia’s Monachus Distillery balanced with lip-puckering grape juice. It’s more than worth the price of admission to witness an artist at work, shaking and stirring each of his 250-plus recipes from memory.

Do Some Local Luxury Shopping

If you’d like to come home with a one-of-a-kind, only-in-Japan souvenir, don’t expect to find it while browsing the glitzy, international boutiques of Ginza or Omotesandō. Instead, head to Nihonbashi, where you’ll discover both historic and modern shops, says Yukari Sakamoto , author of Food Sake Tokyo . “The historic Nihonbashi district has Japan's first department store, Mitsukoshi Nihonbashi , that originated as a kimono fabric shop 350 years ago,” she says.

The lively neighborhood is also full of the city’s best specialty food stores. “Check out pristine fruit in wooden boxes, such as juicy muskmelons, that can go for hundreds of dollars at Sembikiya . The café at Sembikiya offers tempting parfaits of seasonal fresh fruit and ice cream. Pick up titanium wine coolers that will keep bottles of white wine chilled without ice at SUS Gallery .” For an intimate and informative experience, book one of Sakamoto’s private guided field trips . A sommelier, chef, and shōchū advisor, she’s helped everyone from Phil Rosenthal (of Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil ) to chef Rick Bayless navigate Tokyo’s supermarkets and depachika (department store food basements).

Have Tea For Two

While some private tours, such as sumo stable visits, have yet to fully return post-COVID, new ones are cropping up — especially those that embrace the outdoors. That’s the case at Miyanoen , a historic tea farm located in one of Japan’s most famous tea regions less than an hour outside the city. “It’s very unusual that you can experience tea picking here in Tokyo — it’s something you don’t expect to see,” says Fautt. “The tea master, Keiji Miyano, has been on television several times now. The best time to visit Tokyo

For the best weather, visit Tokyo during March, April, May, October or November. Spring is easily the most beautiful time to be in Tokyo, when the magical, pale-pink cherry blossoms transform the city.

Remember to book well in advance, as April is the most popular time of year with tourists. Late autumn is gorgeous too, with the vibrant foliage adding extra sophistication and charm.

The intersection of new and old lies at the heart of Tokyo’s appeal. The frenetic energy of its streets and glowing skyscrapers contrasts with the quiet contemplation of its rituals, ceremonies and gardens. Centuries-old shrines share streets with department stores and karaoke joints, and traditional artisanship jostles with high design and kawaii trinkets. In this exhilarating maelstrom, discerning visitors are spoilt for choice.

An afternoon of shopping in Ginza is a must for well-heeled travellers, strolling among Tokyo’s sprawling department stores and flagships of brands from French couturiers to Mikimoto pearls. Go on the weekend after 12pm, when the main thoroughfare, Chuo Dori, is closed to traffic.

If it’s authentic culture that you seek, Tokyo is brimming with attractions that showcase its heritage. Historic Asakusa is home to the city’s oldest Buddhist temple, Sensoji, as well as rickshaw rides, kimono experiences and vibrant Nakamise Shopping Street. The Shinto Meiji Shrine, preparing for its 100th anniversary in 2020, is set within a peaceful 70-hectare forest, while adjacent Yoyogi Park features long cycling trails and the chance to see a fascinating cross-section of local clubs – from theatre to rockabilly – meeting, rehearsing and performing.

If Yoyogi Park offers the people-watching, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden offers the beauty, spread out over themed, landscaped gardens. Autumn visitors are greeted with fiery displays of red, orange and yellow as the leaves change colour in the seasonal phenomenon known as koyo .

Looking for less tranquil pleasures? Sumo is not only Japan’s national sport but also a sought-after cultural experience. Official tournaments take place three times a year in Tokyo (in January, May and September), and travellers may be able see the rikishi (wrestlers) in the streets around Ryogoku’s Kokugikan arena. Some training stables will even allow visitors to attend their morning practice for an up-close look at this ancient sport.

What to eat

Culinary experiences are one of the greatest lures to Tokyo for discerning travellers, and – with 234 restaurants awarded stars in the 2018 Michelin guide – there is no shortage of gourmet delights on offer. Tradition is still an unbeatable drawcard. Take eight-seat Sushi Saito, which continues to astonish diners (those that can get in, that is) with its impeccable morsels of the day’s catch; the three-Michelin-starred sushi restaurant is venerated as one of the finest of its kind. Kaiseki ryori , the elaborate multi-course meal that showcases Japanese cooking methods, is still considered the pinnacle of Tokyo haute cuisine. A new generation of chefs are adding their own twists to this traditional dining style, epitomised by Zaiyu Hasegawa of Den, the modern kaiseki establishment that was hailed as Japan’s Best Restaurant at the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 awards thanks to its humorous, international take on the form. Sitting at number six on the same list is Yoshihiro Narisawa’s eponymous restaurant, the proponent of a style named ‘Innovative Satoyama’ in honour of produce from the area between mountains and villages.

If you’re looking for international flavours, Japan is home to a legion of chefs that have mastered modern French cuisine. Shuzo Kishida has been lauded for his degustation menus since opening Quintessence in 2006, claiming three Michelin stars in the 2018 guide, while Shinobu Namae gives French flavours a playful twist with his poetically titled dishes at two-starred L’Effervescence.

For a more cultural experience, you can’t go past izakaya , the Japanese gastropubs known for sharing dishes, a casual atmosphere and an extensive drinks list. Kaikaya in the Shibuya district is particularly popular with foreign guests thanks to its friendly service and hand-illustrated menu.

Where to stay

Like its cuisine, Tokyo’s hotel scene caters for all tastes, whether you seek internationally branded refinement or a five-star take on the ryokan (traditional inn). Many of the former reside in the upper floors of the city’s glossy skyscrapers, stunning guests from check-in with some of Tokyo’s finest views. Park Hyatt, Andaz, The Peninsula , The Ritz-Carlton, Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La and Four Seasons (with just 57 rooms) all have sophisticated outposts in central areas.

Palace Hotel Tokyo offers a serene location beside the Imperial Gardens, offset by a program of cultural immersion. In order to make the most of your time in this bustling city, you’ll want to stay near the JR Yamanote Line . This train line connects many of Tokyo’s most popular neighborhoods and attractions, making it easy to get around quickly and efficiently.

By staying near the Yamanote Line, you’ll save time transporting back and forth, you’ll save money on unnecessary train/bus tickets, and you’ll be able to spend more time exploring all that Tokyo has to offer!

Nearest Airport : Narita International Airport (NRT) and Haneda Airport (HND). NRT is 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Tokyo’s city center. HND is 14 kilometers (9 miles) south of Tokyo’s city center.

How to Get Around : Public transportation all the way. Don’t even think about renting a car in Tokyo! If you plan on traveling across Japan, a Japan Rail Pass can save you a lot of money on transportation. The pass allows unlimited travel on Japan Railways (JR) trains, buses, and ferries for a set period of time.

Must-Do’s : Immerse yourself in all the digital art at TeamLab Planets , feel the Disney magic at Tokyo Disneyland or DisneySea , eat a crepe in the Harajuku district , try vending machine ramen and conveyor belt sushi , spend your early jet-lagged hours at Tsukiji Fish Market .

What Is The JR Yamanote Line?

The JR Yamanote Line is a train line in Tokyo that circles around the city’s central districts. It is one of the most convenient and popular train lines for visitors to Tokyo, as it connects many of the city’s top landmarks and attractions.

For first-time visitors to Tokyo, the JR Yamanote Line is a great way to get around the city and explore its many neighborhoods and districts. The line stops at many of Tokyo’s major train stations, including Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, Shibuya Station, and Ueno Station, making it easy to transfer to other train lines and explore different parts of the city.

As an example, if you were to stay by Shibuya Station and wanted to go to Shinjuku (a district that you’ll definitely end up in at some point during your trip), it would take approximately 5-10 minutes on the JR Yamanote Line. Easy!

However, if you were to stay along another train line or had to bus to the nearest subway station, you’ll need to transfer to the JR Yamanote Line to get to Shinjuku. This could take considerably longer, depending on the distance between your starting station and the nearest Yamanote Line station.

Plus, that doesn’t even take into consideration the time it takes to get off your first train and transfer to your next train!

To save yourself the logistical headache of having to worry about bus/train transfers, AND to save both money and time, opt to stay at a hotel as close to a JR Yamanote Line train station as possible!

Tokyo is a humongous city, and you’re going to find a wide variety of different districts, from bustling neighborhoods with vibrant nightlife to peaceful areas with quiet parks and temples. With so many options, it can be overwhelming to decide what area to stay in during your trip to Tokyo.

In this section, we’ll explore the top four neighborhoods we recommend to first-timers in Tokyo and explain why they’re great areas for you to stay in.

Shibuya is another popular neighborhood in Tokyo that’s known for its shopping, dining, and nightlife. It’s home to the famous Shibuya Crossing , one of the busiest intersections in the world.

One of the top attractions in Shibuya is Yoyogi Park , a beautiful green space that’s perfect for picnics and relaxing. The park is also home to Meiji Shrine , a popular Shinto shrine that attracts millions of visitors each year.

The area’s main drag, Ginza Dori , is like Tokyo’s Champs Elysees — their luxury shopping street. Along the street, you’ll find lots of shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cocktail bars conveniently located within the many skyscrapers.

One of the top attractions in Ginza is the Kabuki-za Theatre , which is known for its traditional Japanese kabuki performances. The area is also home to several art galleries and museums, including the Mitsui Memorial Museum and the Tokyo Gallery .

Foodies will love Ginza for its many high-end dining options, including Michelin-starred restaurants.

The Tokyo Station / Marunouchi Area is another great district to stay in. It’s home to one of the busiest train stations in Tokyo. Because most Shinkansen trains leave from this station, staying around here is especially convenient and effortless if you want to take day trips outside of Tokyo.

From Tokyo Station, you can easily travel to any part of the city quickly (likely without the need to transfer to another train or bus). From Tokyo Station, Shibuya is 25 minutes away, Shinjuku is 15 minutes away, and Ueno is just 5 mins away — no transfer required for any of them!

Food lovers will love Tokyo Station for its many restaurants, department store food courts, cafes and dessert shops.

Should you choose to stay around here, some of the top attractions near Tokyo Station is the Imperial Palace , which is the residence of the Emperor of Japan. The area is also home to several museums and galleries, including the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art .

You’ll also be pretty close to the neighborhoods of Akihabara (manga, arcades, and electronics haven) and Ginza (luxury shopping).

Having said that, the downside of staying in this area is that you will have to take the train to get to Tokyo’s must-see attractions such as Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Yoyogi Park, Shinjuku/Shibuya districts, Harajuku district, etc.

Still, being based around Tokyo station is super convenient, especially if you plan on taking day trips to farther away destinations like Hakone, Yokohama, Tokyo DisneySea / Disneyland Tokyo , or any of the other theme parks near Tokyo .

Best for: families, travelers on a budget, people who like public parks and value quiet neighborhoods

Ueno is a vibrant neighborhood in Tokyo that’s known for its cultural attractions and outdoor spaces. It can be best described as being quieter than other districts, convenient, family-friendly, and budget-friendly!

Ueno is home to Ueno Park , one of the largest parks in Tokyo, which is famous for its cherry blossom trees and museums.

One of the top attractions in Ueno is the Tokyo National Museum , which houses the largest collection of Japanese art in the world. The area is also home to the Ueno Zoo , which is known for its giant pandas.

Foodies will love Ueno for its many street food stalls and traditional Japanese restaurants. The area is also home to Ameya Yokocho , a bustling shopping street that’s perfect for souvenir shopping.

To give you a sense of its location, Ginza is 12 minutes away and Tokyo station is just 8 minutes away. However because it is further east, Shibuya and Shinjuku are 28-30 mins away by train.

All in all, Ueno is a great neighborhood for families and people looking for a more cultural experience in Tokyo. Solo travelers may also enjoy the area for its lively outdoor atmosphere.

Pro Tip: If you’re planning on taking day trips that lie north of Tokyo (Nikko, Nagano, etc), then staying in Ueno can be a great idea. Most Shinkansens heading north typically stop at the Ueno Station.

If you value nightlife , nothing can beat Shinjuku’s night atmosphere! If you value shopping , Shibuya has a wider range of options. And for food , both Shibuya and Shinjuku are amazing — they are the two most competitive gourmet areas, where you can find pretty much anything you want!

They are both relatively close to each other (just a few train stops away), so I’d say you really can’t go wrong with either.

The cast and crew of an upcoming South Korean reality TV show, Pick Me Trip in Bali, are currently stuck in Bali, Indonesia, after local authorities discovered the production team had been filming without official permits, South Korean news outlet SPOTV reported. 

The cast and crew, which includes Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon, Apink’s Bomi, Secret Number’s Dita, and former I.O.I member Im Nayoung, arrived in Bali on Apr 21 and were scheduled to leave on Apr 25.

However, their departure from the Indonesian island was blocked by authorities, who alleged that the group did not have proper permission to film.

The cast and crew, amounting to around 30 people, allegedly had their passports confiscated. They are currently staying in a hotel while investigations take place. According to SPOTV, the earliest they could return to South Korea would be next week

The English-language K-pop website Koreaboo reported that an unidentified source who worked on the show told SPOTV that the detention may be due to the cast and crew not obtaining the proper visas. 

Citing another unidentified representative, SPOTV reported that the cast and crew were unsure about the exact reasons for their detention, and said it is "frustrating that the production team is not sharing details about the situation".

Another unidentified official said that the "situation is embarrassing" and that they are all "working to return to Korea quickly".

Due to this, cast members who had pre-arranged schedules in South Korea are scrambling to make last-minute adjustments to their plans.

Following the news of the situation in Bali, KBS Joy, the television channel expected to air the reality show, released a statement to South Korean media outlet Xportnews , although it did not comment on the investigation.

The statement, which was translated into English by Koreaboo, said: "We have confirmed the contents related to the programme but as for officially being broadcast, that is still under consideration. It is not confirmed. 

“We have no connection with the production company that was filming in Bali."
