An archipelago of over 17,000 islands, Indonesia works its way across several oceans, beginning with the island of Sumatra in the West and stretching to Irian Jaya in the East. In between, Indonesia includes a sizeable part of Borneo, as well as larger islands such as Java, Bali and Sulawesi. With such a broad selection of islands, Indonesia encompasses a variety of landscapes such as: thick tropical jungle, fertile rice fields, grasslands and volcanic mountain ranges. Indonesia’s ecosystems are full of a rich variety of flora and fauna including the very rare Sumatran tiger and elephant, the Javan rhino and the fierce Komodo Dragon. Indonesia is also famous for its incredible beaches and marine life. With thousands of kilometers of reefs, beaches, bays and lagoons, Indonesia is a diver's paradise.

1. sumatran rhino.

Appearing almost prehistoric, the Sumatran rhino is smaller in both size and number than its African cousins. Covered in a reddish brown fur, the Sumatran rhino is a solitary animal, and has been quietly grazing the grasslands for thousands of years.

2. Sulawesi Giant Squirrel

Living deep within Sulawesi’s rainforest canopies, this enigmatic and shy rodent can be tough to spot, so stay quiet and alert if you want to catch a glimpse of one.

3. Sun Bear

A perennial favorite, the sun bear can be found on many of Indonesia’s islands. Perhaps suffering from ‘small bear syndrome’, these fiery characters are often quite aggressive, defying their nickname as the ‘Honey Bear’.

4. Sulawesi Macaque

Native to the island of Sulawesi, these crafty primates are known for being exceptionally social creatures. With family groups usually led by dominant females, Sulawesi macaques are a prime example of 'girl power' in action.

5. Sumatran Tiger

A noble predator with an almost mythical status, the Sumatran tiger stalks its prey deep within the jungles of Sumatra. With some estimates putting their numbers at just over 300, an international effort is underway to protect this incredible animal.

6. Javan Slow Loris

Slow in name, slow in nature. Don’t be fooled though, this super-cute creature packs a deadly punch – it is the world's only poisonous primate!

7. Long-Beaked Echidna

Inhabiting the island of New Guinea, this crazy critter snuffles about the forest floor using its large snout. Don’t expect to see many of these guys though; they are classified as ‘critically endangered’.

8. Komodo Dragon

The fearsome Komodo Dragon is the world’s largest lizard, often weighing up to 70 kilograms. Described as the ‘perfect predator’, this stealthy beast makes for an exhilarating sight.

9. Moluccan Flying Snake

Scared of snakes? Now you'll have to search the ground and the air as these aerodynamic reptiles have found a novel way to move between the treetops, by becoming airborne and gliding for up to 30 meters.

10. Babirusa

What do you get when you cross a pig and a deer? The odd looking Babirusa: a short and stocky animal with large, curled horns. Native to Indonesia, populations of these bizarre beasts are sadly in decline due to poaching and habitat loss.

The culture of Indonesia is diverse and varied across the approximately 6,000 inhabited islands. There are over 300 different languages spoken across the islands, however most people can speak Bahasa Indonesian. Despite the diversity, Indonesian tends to have a strong cultural bond, with the national slogan meaning Unity in Diversity. Religion is a big contributor to cultural identity in Indonesia, with everyone needing to have an official religion, which will be listed on their national identification card. Generally speaking, you can only marry people of the same religion as you. The majority of the population are Muslim and, but Christianity, Catholicism, Hinduism and Buddhism are also practiced.

Food and drink

Here are some of the most popular foods and drinks you should try in Indonesia.

Satay is delicious skewered meat (often chicken), which is cooked over hot coals, covered in a spicy peanut sauce. Vegetarians can also try this sauce on rice cakes called ketupat. Satay is a great meal to eat on the run or equally good as part of a feast in a restaurant.

Beef rendang

Similar to a beef curry (although with less sauce and a richer flavor), Beef Rendang is a spicy dish that is traditionally served at special festive events like weddings. However, travelers will be able to sample this dish all over Indonesia.

Nasi Goreng

Indonesian fried rice known as Nasi Goreng is Indonesia’s national dish for good reason. This famous meal is eaten all over the world in many different formats, but what makes Indonesia’s rendition particularly special is the darkness of the rice, thanks to the use of thick, sweet soy sauce known as kecap manis.

These steamed fish dumplings served in peanut sauce are Indonesia’s answer to dim sum. The cone shaped packages can be made with a variety of fish including tuna, mackerel and even prawn. They’re a popular street food and can be found at many streetside stalls and restaurants.

Nasi uduk translates to mixed rice, and is a dish of rice cooked in coconut milk mixed with various herbs and spices. It is normally served with some sort of meat dish or curry.

Tea and coffee

Tea and coffee are the most common and popular beverages in Indonesia. They are often served sweeter than you may be used to drinking at home.

For most travelers, shopping in Indonesia will be very affordable, with opportunities to purchase authentic arts and crafts, including traditional batik clothing, woodcarvings, pottery and other unusual items. On bigger islands like Bali and Java, you will be spoiled for choice when it comes to shopping opportunities. Tourist centers can be worthwhile if you are looking to buy handcrafted items like puppets, leatherworks and batik. Otherwise, explore local markets for clothing, shoes, antiques and other items.

There are many different religious and cultural celebrations in Indonesia, but some of the key public holidays include:

• Galungan dan Kuningan: celebrating the victory of light over darkness, when ancestors visit their relatives on earth.
• Kartini Day: the birthday of national heroine, Raden Ayu Kartini, who fought for women’s education rights.
• National Awakening Day: celebrates the coming together of people from the 17,000 islands of Indonesia as a national identity.
• National Batik Day: celebrates the traditional batik clothing and is commemorated in October on the day when UNESCO first acknowledged batik as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage in 2009.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Indonesia?

Passport holders for most nationalities are permitted to enter Visa Free for up to 30 days for tourism purposes. Please check with your relevant consulate or embassy.

Entry requirements: presentation of onward or return tickets, passport which is valid for at least 6 months. Visitors on Visa-free Short Visits must enter AND exit from certain airports and seaports in Indonesia including: Jakarta (Soekarno-Hatta Airport), Bali (Ngurah Rai Airport), Yogyakarta (Adisucipto Airport) and Surabaya (Juanda Airport). This currently excludes entry and exist from Lombok (Bandar Udara International Airport). Visa-free Short Visits cannot be extended and cannot be transferred to another type of visa.

Some nationalities are required to obtain a visa on arrival, or in advance. Citizens of countries who aren't on the visa on arrival or visa-free lists are required to apply for a visa overseas before travelling to Indonesia.

Nationals of all countries planning to stay for more than 30 days in Indonesia have to apply for the appropriate visa at an overseas Indonesian consulate or embassy before their departure.

Local laws require that you must always carry identification. We recommend taking a clear photocopy of your passport photo page and photo of your visa (after arriving), to carry with you.

What's the weather like in Indonesia?

Indonesia has a tropical climate with a distinct wet and dry season and hot, humid weather throughout the year. Temperatures average 72°F to 90°F along the coast, but it's typically a bit cooler at higher elevations such as the Padang Highlands in  Sumatra  and Mt Bromo in  Java . The sea is warm all year, with temperatures averaging a balmy 79°F to 82°F.

Is tipping customary in Indonesia?

Tipping isn't mandatory or customary in Indonesia, but a tip of spare change or another small amount would be appreciated by restaurants, drivers and other service workers, especially if the service has been particularly good.

What is the internet access like in Indonesia?

Internet access is widely available in tourist areas like Bali, which has many internet cafes. Internet access is less common in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Indonesia?

You'll be able to use your cell phone in most urban areas of Indonesia, although some of the islands or more remote areas may not have network coverage. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your cell carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your phone while in Indonesia.

What are the toilets like in Indonesia?

You'll have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation while in Indonesia. The standard toilet is of the squat variety and this may take some getting used to. However, western-style toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

Indonesia is one of the world's favorite budget travel destinations. Here's what you can roughly expect to pay for a:

Can I drink the water in Indonesia?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Indonesia. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Indonesia?

Major credit cards are widely accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in Indonesia. However, they may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Indonesia.

What is ATM access like in Indonesia?

ATMs are found widely throughout Indonesia, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic in most areas. Some smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so be prepared for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Is Indonesia accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Indonesia can be a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities because pavements are uneven and steps are frequent, paving is poorly maintained and footpaths are usually obstructed with parked vehicles, street stalls and debris. Accessible public toilets are rare other than in big modern shopping malls. Wheelchair accessible vehicles are available only through specialist tour operators, but cars and drivers can be hired readily and are good value. Local guides are easy to find in tourist areas. Bali has a wider range of tourism services and more developed facilities, including some accessible accommodation options. Some sights such as Borobudur and Prambanan in Yogyakarta are partially wheelchair accessible. Visitors generally find that Indonesians are very welcoming and willing to help those with access needs. The Asian Para Games took place in Jakarta in 2018 and have helped raise the profile of people with disabilities in the country as well as give new direction for making facilities more accessible in the capital.

Is Indonesia safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

Everyone should feel comfortable when they travel with Intrepid and we know that many of our travelers are part of the LGBTQIA+ community. It’s important for our travelers to be aware of the local laws and customs in the destinations we visit as some countries have laws that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ people. We recommend you visit  Equaldex  and/or  Smartraveller  before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQIA+ related laws. 

Homosexuality is not currently illegal in Indonesia, other than in Aceh province (which is governed by Islamic law), however the LGBTQIA+ community has routinely been targeted and harassed by police.

Revisions to Indonesia’s criminal code that would allow prison sentences of up to five years for sex between unmarried people are being considered by parliament. These changes would criminalize same-sex relationships and advocacy groups are fearing a profound setback to human rights in Indonesia as a result.

A predominantly Muslim country, Islamic organisations have increasingly been pressuring the government on moral issues and in the past few years politicians and public figures have frequently been using anti-LGBTQIA+ rhetoric as a means to win votes. Gay dating apps and media portraying LGBTQIA+ behaviour as “normal” have been banned. Same-sex marriage, civil partnerships, and adoption are all illegal, and the lack of anti-discrimination laws means that attacks on the LGBTQIA+ community in Indonesia regularly go unpunished.

There are few gay-friendly venues outside of Bali. Because sex in general is a taboo subject in Indonesian society, the issue of sexuality is unlikely to arise while traveling here. The majority of the country is safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers, provided you are willing to be discreet and cautious with public behaviour. Bali, with its Hindu majority, has always been more liberal, tolerant and relaxed in attitude, however public displays of affection are still not the norm for any couples anywhere in the country. Upscale hotels will likely not have any issues with same-sex travelers sharing a bed, however at budget or family-run businesses if you are allocated separate beds you might feel more comfortable not to draw attention to your relationship.

Unforgettable trip to Borneo!

I hired the klotok tour with them to visit the orangutan fields in Borneo. 3 days / 2 nights. Incredible journey. From the first moment, very good communication, explanation of the entire journey and good management. The trip itself a wonder, perfectly organized, everything in its time, large, clean and comfortable boat. The charming crew, always aware of what you may need. How I’d say the perfect ORGANIZATION. 

An unforgettable experience! I traveled with a friend. We took the tour to see orangutans in Borneo and I loved it. We did it in a Klotok with more travelers and the guide Isai who spoke Spanish and was also very fun. It was a great trip through the national park and a 100% recommended experience!!

I promised myself to write to you, because it was really a unique and unforgettable experience and this was certainly thanks to the whole team of our boat, Rambo 1. I would like to thank everyone, our guide , Andy Hartadi, Captain Safarudin the wonderful chef Ratna with his beautiful daughter and the always very kind and very nice Indra. All of them have helped to make this already fantastic experience truly unique. 

We did the 3d2n orangutan tour in November, with the guide Opi. The experience was incredible, not only for the trip of being in a Klotok in the jungle and seeing orangutans but for the service. We learned a lot and had impressive meals (something difficult, given that you are in the middle of the jungle), on an environmentally aware trip and employing local people. I hope they continue to grow.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the trip! Our travel group felt like a little family, and our tour guide was exceptionally kind and funny. Overall the trip was good, however a few things I think could be improved was the unethical dolphin spotting boat trip - the boats were chasing the dolphins and almost hit them it made me upset and others on the boat agreed and asked to go back. The surfing was a great experience however the group wasn’t aware if we swallow the sea water or it goes up your nose it can make you very poorly, around 5/6 people were sent to the clinic after the surfing. Next time, a warning of this may be appreciated. The tour guide was very good at handling with the medical emergencies and everyone eventually felt better.

Tour guide was very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions we had throughout the tour. Felt very safe and guided during our stay in Canggu and Ubud. I do feel that if you are naturally a quieter member of the group, it was sometimes hard to be noticed or your needs met. Encouraged us to partake in activities that he felt as a group we would enjoy, which we all appreciated. However, did feel that the tour guides attitude changed once in Gili T. I understand it is a more relaxed and holiday vibe island.

Best trip I have ever had, had the best time in a spectacular country and the best ceo I could ever ask for

Gede was an excellent tour guide, his knowledge of all the local sights was brilliant. Things that could be improved on the tour: The accommodation was always located by really busy roads and despite earplugs the noise was disturbing and you didn't get much sleep. When you have early morning checkouts this can be fatiguing. The ferry to Lombok was not the best experience, to have to sit on the floor for 4-5 hrs was not really acceptable. I think G Adventures should charge a bit more and offer the fast boat. Maybe some of the traditional village tours could be swapped for other activities, but I appreciate people that joined for the Lombok tour hadn't seen the Bali villages. Everything else was well organised and ran smoothly.

Bonjour, Je tiens à préciser que mes critiques sont constructives et doivent vous permettre de vous ameliorer. Aucune notion historique sur Bali, Show more.. sa colonisation, quand, où, pourquoi, comment... Dans cette première semaine les 2 Wayan ont été parfaits. Le. Problème vient plus de ce que vous nous avez proposé vous voyagiste. Nous avons eu des désagréments tous les soirs dans TOUS les hôtels proposés (pas d'eau chaude, pas d'électricité)... Le seul endroit super bon ou nous avons mangé était à Ubud. La visite du marché était un attrape touriste. Il aurait fallu nous amener dans un vrai marché Balinais pour découvrir la nourriture et les gens. Il. Aurait fallu nous faire voir les waterfall. Trop de temples à mon goût, Bali est autre chose que cela. La visite des 2 derniers jours était inutile.m et ne vous a rien coûté d'ailleurs.... C'est moyen de faire payer la danse et le repas... Nous avons payer trop cher cette première semaine pour ce qui était proposé. Quant à la sortie dauphins sur Lovina ?! Une honte !!! 50 bateaux qui sautent sur le moindre ailerons qui dépasse !!! Nous n'avons rien vu du tout. L'hôtel était le pire d'ailleurs, encore de l'eau froide et des cafards plein la salle de bains. Les draps sentaient le moisi. Heureusement que sur le dernier jour là visite de l'école a mis un peu de joie. Sur cette deuxième semaine j'ai tout organisé moi même et nous avons vraiment découvert Bali Lembogan... Il vous faut faire des visites plus locales et d'autre lieu de festivité détente plus attractifs (Canggu, Ubud plus longtemps, waterfalls....). Nous ne recommanderons pas votre agence de voyage. Mais nous retiendrons la gentille, ma bienveillance le sourire à toute épreuve du peuple Balinais.

Lost of Show more.. time in one hotel asking one passport per couple despite other hotel only require passport of the group leader. Congrats to Kabal and the Drivers. Excelllent service of Kabal taking care of feedbacks and wishes of his customers. As well he is very fun making jokes all along the travel. Also the two drivers were always present at the right time opening the doors and welcoming as well as filling our water bottles.

Our trip was great, and we have no complaints about the travel company, which was very supportive and responsive to any requests and last-minute changes of plans.  We normally like to explore off-the-beaten paths when we travel, but instead, we felt like we were following more of the touristy crowd.  As a young couple who enjoy adventure, we would have appreciated the guide helping us explore places that are more for locals.  We noticed that the travel company was not too familiar with the hotels we stayed in and we think it might be important for the agents to see the locations in person to provide better guidance.

The moment I spoke with Jasmine from the travel agency for the first time, I knew that I was going to work with somebody who would understand my interests. Not only were Jasmine and her team accommodating, but they made sure I was able to get some rest in certain aspects of the trips where they could anticipate I would need a break. Very, very organized. They knew how to coordinate the entire trip, especially since I traveled to four islands (Java, Borneo, Bali, Nusa Penida). The whole team was very accommodating, and I do not have enough words to express how great I felt about their service. When I arrived in Jakarta, I was immediately greeted by airport staff who helped me get my luggage and take me to the hotel. I was then met by the team who took time out of their busy schedule and showed me the Jakarta airport and Jakarta. They even took me out for dinner where I had an authentic Indonesian meal for the first time. Afterwards, every day, I was picked up by assigned guides and drivers who I felt safe with and could trust for that day. I learned so much about Indonesia, its history, and its cultures. All the guides were friendly and very informative, making sure I felt comfortable. They even asked me questions about America, my culture, and my philosophy. The team made sure I got to every site and made sure I was safe throughout the trip. Even all the hotels and resort areas I stayed in were amazing, clean, and beautiful. Overall, I highly, highly recommend this travel company to everyone who wants to visit Indonesia. I was heard by them, I felt safe with them, and I was able to trust them. They treated me like a family member and I had a very memorable experience!

Our family of four traveled to Japan, visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, and the Hakone area. The Zicasso travel agency put together great properties. We loved the locations of each and their amenities. We had excellent seats on the bullet train. Our driver and tour guide in Kyoto were outstanding! We felt there was definitely a communication misstep with our plans for Tokyo however. Our driver/guide was very lovely, but not very definitive on what we were doing each day. We felt we had communicated with the driver and the travel company as to what we wanted to do, but for example, when we went to do our food tour of Tokyo, it was paired with a visit to the fish market. We asked if the food tour was after the market, to which our guide said yes. However, about two hours into the fish market we realized that was his idea of the food tour. There was no specific plan of what we were to try and no explanation of the items. Instead, we walked around and bought a few things we wanted to try. We shared everything as we were saving room for the food tour that really never happened. It was frustrating as we felt our guide was more of a driver and less of a guide. Communication was definitely a factor, which is why we hired the travel agency.

10 of the best things to do in Indonesia's Gili Islands

Anyone who’s been to Indonesia 's  Gili Islands would likely agree on one thing – you can’t help but feel relaxed as soon as you set foot on the fine white sands.

These three little islands off the coast of Lombok are a popular holiday destination, and it’s easy to see why. Its vivid blue waters, rich marine life and dramatic sunsets are like a tropical postcard, with the ban on motor vehicles further enhancing the peaceful atmosphere.

They may be small in size, but the islands pack a punch in terms of things to do. Adventurous travelers can enjoy action-packed days of water sports and island hopping, while those who prefer to take it at a more leisurely pace can make the most of the beach bars and spas. Whichever island you choose , here are the top experiences to add to your itinerary.

1. Go diving in the Gilis' pristine waters

The Gilis are a fantastic place to learn to scuba dive , with a huge choice of international dive schools offering PADI-certified lessons in different languages, as well as trips for all levels of divers. The surrounding waters are dotted with fascinating dive sites where you can spot everything from shipwrecks to sharks (don’t worry, these are reef sharks, and they're quite shy when it comes to humans). Some of the most popular locations include Shark Point, Turtle Heaven and Gili Meno Wall, which is an excellent spot for night diving.

Planning tip:  For the best underwater visibility, plan your trip during the dry season (April to September). Although it’s still possible to dive during the wet season, thunderstorms and increased sediment mean you won't be able to see as much.

2. Snorkel around the islands 

Scuba diving isn’t for everyone, so if you prefer to stay on the surface, grab a snorkel and mask to peek below the waves instead. If you don’t have your own gear, there are places to rent snorkels and fins all along the beaches. The waters here are clear and shallow, and are teeming with colorful tropical fish, turtles, octopus and starfish. It’s easy to snorkel off shore, and as you walk along the coastline you’ll see signposts indicating the best snorkeling areas. For beauty spots further out – such as the Gili Meno underwater sculptures by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor – join a boat tour and go island hopping.

3. Learn to cook Indonesian food 

If you’ve fallen in love with the local cuisine and plan on recreating it back home, then one of the must-do activities is to join a cooking class. There are a handful of cooking schools where keen foodies can learn to prepare classic Indonesian dishes like mie goreng (fried noodles) and kare ayam (chicken curry) using fresh ingredients from the local markets. Gili Cooking Classes is by far the most popular option, where English-speaking local chefs take you through three-, four- or six-course menus. There are outposts on Gili Trawangan and Gili Air.  

4. Eat fresh seafood at Gili Trawangan night market

For those staying on Gili Trawangan, make sure to visit the night market right by the harbor. Open every evening from sunset, this open-air market is packed with stalls selling delicious local food. Find everything from nasi campur (rice with a selection of sides) to traditional desserts like terang bulan (a thick pancake-like treat with various fillings) and klepon (sweet glutinous rice balls filled with palm sugar and coated in shaved coconut). The highlights of the market are the barbecue stands where you can choose from a selection of fish, prawns and lobsters, and have it freshly grilled.

5. Explore by bicycle

Depending on the island, it takes between one and two hours to walk the circumference. It's even quicker by bike, and rentals are cheap and easy to find. The Gilis are very flat and many of the roads are paved, making it a top family-friendly activity. Cycle along the coastal paths and into the islands’ interior, passing through coconut fields and villages. Remember to bring your swimsuit with you, as you’ll want to end your ride with a refreshing dip in the sea.

Local tip: The traditional horse-driven carts that you’ll see on the islands are called cidomo . Drivers may offer you an island tour, but beware that there are animal welfare concerns around the way the horses are treated, and we don't recommend riding with them. 6. Enjoy the islands' many water sports

As well as diving and snorkeling, the Gilis offer other exciting water sports including paddle boarding, sea kayaking, water skiing and banana boat rides. While you’ll find rental shops across the islands, Gili Trawangan has the most variety of water sports available. Although professional surfers may be more interested in the world-class breaks on mainland Lombok, the Gilis have a handful of decent breaks too, especially during the dry season (April to September) when the winds are stronger.

7. Get involved with local conservation efforts

Eco-conscious travelers can give back to the planet by getting involved in local conservation initiatives. Gili Eco Trust is an NGO based on Gili Trawangan, and has several projects and charities that visitors can support while on holiday here. Cat lovers can lend a helping hand to the local felines at Cats of Gili , where efforts include volunteer-led free clinics, spaying and neutering programs and donating to the Cats of Gili charity shop. Similarly, STUD Horse Riding & Rescue focuses its efforts on rescued and retired horses, offering beach and island rides – book a slot at sunset for an unforgettable experience. With any volunteering opportunity, we recommend that travelers always check and assess the standards and suitability of the project before giving their time.

8. Listen to live music and party into the night

Get a taste of the local nightlife at the many bars and pubs across Gili Trawangan and Gili Air . For true partygoers, Gili Trawangan promises a lively night out, from live reggae bands at Sama Sama Bar  to DJs at Jungle Bar . If you prefer something a little more lowkey, Gili Air has a more laid-back party scene, with well-known beach bars like Legend Bar and Cheeky Monkey offering cocktails and live music to people relaxing in bean bags on the sand. 

Planning tip: Want to avoid the party scene all together? Stay on Gili Meno, known as the "honeymoon island" for its tranquil atmosphere. Thanks to a local ban on late-night music and parties, this is where you can really experience a quiet island retreat. 

9. Unwind at a spa

Amongst all the outdoor adventures, take a moment to slow down and treat yourself to a spa day. This is one of the best things to do in the Gilis, where you can pamper yourself with everything from traditional massages to beauty treatments. If your hotel doesn’t have an inhouse spa, there are plenty of them along the bougainvillea-lined streets.

On Gili Trawangan, the uber-cool Rose Spa is a favorite for manicures and pedicures, while You Spa offers a range of treatments with tranquil greenery views and private rooms with flower-filled bath tubs. Those staying on Gili Air can enter a state of bliss at Slow Spa ’s bamboo haven, or let the worries melt away in the cool and cavern-like Zone Spa . Gili Meno has less options, but if you walk along the coast you’ll come across simple beach shacks offering massages on sea-facing beds.

10. Hike up Gili Trawangan Hill viewpoint

As soon as the sun starts to get low in the sky, most people head towards the west coast of Gili Trawangan where rows of beach bars offer live music and happy hours. If you’re seeking somewhere a little quieter, lace up your walking shoes and take on the relatively easy trail that leads up to the Gili Trawangan Hill viewpoint . It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to get to the top, where you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of Lombok’s Mt Rinjani, Bali’s Mt Agung and the other two Gilis. It also makes for a stunning spot to watch the sun rise.

Local tip: Gili Trawangan was used as a naval base during WWII. While you’re up here, keep an eye out for the Japanese machine gun bunker and the remains of tunnels that snaked through the hill.
