'Nothing is lost yet' - Remco Evenepoel upbeat about recovery despite fading late at Stage 3 of Tour de Suisse

World champion Remco Evenepoel saw the bright side after his attack at Stage 3 of the Tour de Suisse wasn't enough to seal victory. The Soudal-QuickStep rider, who was forced out of the Giro d'Italia last month with Covid-19, finished fourth but remains second in the GC. Mattias Skjelmose (Trek-Segafredo) took victory to move to the top of the GC standings.

Remco Evenepoel on Trailing at Tour de Suisse: “Now it’s onto tomorrow, it’s another chance.“

In an unexpected turn of events, Mattias Skjelmose of Trek-Segafredo climbed to victory at the Tour de Suisse, leaving world champion Remco Evenepoel trailing in his wake during stage three’s final ascent to Villars-sur-Ollon. The 22-year-old Skjelmose now leads the General Classification by 17 seconds ahead of Evenepoel, marking the Dane’s third victory this season, and his first at WorldTour level.

Following closely behind the leading duo, Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates sits third in the GC standings, trailing by 24 seconds.

Skjelmose stuck close to Evenepoel’s wheel when the world champion launched an attack. When there were only 2.5km to go, the Dane made his decisive move, following AG2R Citröen’s Felix Gall, who he beat in a nail-biting two-up dash to the finish line.

Reflecting on his performance, Skjelmose shared, “I had a really big question mark about my climbing abilities. Ok, this is not the hardest mountain stage, but it’s still a really long climb, and I did really good.” As the finish line approached, the Dane kept his cool, holding off Gall for his first WorldTour victory.

In response to his spectacular win and the prospects of holding the GC lead until the race’s conclusion, he noted, “We hope so. We’re going to try our best. There are a lot of strong teams and it will be difficult but we will try our best.”

Meanwhile, the day unfolded differently for Evenepoel. Initially, the Belgian’s blistering attack with 6km left of the 11km climb made him look set to claim the yellow leader’s jersey. However, an unexpected struggle towards the summit saw him drop behind.

“Nothing is lost yet, so no drama,” said Evenepoel in response to the setback. “I haven’t lost the general classification here. Now it’s onto tomorrow, it’s another chance.” His acknowledgment of the situation and readiness to keep fighting serve as an emblem of his tenacity and relentless spirit.

A month after abandoning the Giro d’Italia due to Covid-19, Evenepoel revealed he felt short of his best form during this race, which impacted his performance on the climb. “Normally I should be able to add another acceleration in that stretch, but that wasn’t on the cards today,” he explained.

Despite his performance, the world champion remains optimistic about the race for overall victory. “Maybe I went a little too early, but my teammates were empty, so I had to go when I did,” Evenepoel noted. He hinted at adopting a more cautious strategy in the days ahead, given the challenges to come.

As the Tour de Suisse rolls forward, the race’s conclusion hangs in the balance with the final time trial in Abtwil on Sunday. The world will be watching to see if Skjelmose can maintain his lead and if Evenepoel can make a comeback, potentially reshaping the narrative of the Tour de Suisse.

World champion Remco Evenepoel to make post-Covid comeback at Tour de Suisse

The Soudal Quick-Step rider will spend the second half of his season focusing on the Glasgow World Championships

World Champion Evenepoel

Remco Evenepoel is set to make his post-Covid comeback at the Tour de Suisse next Sunday.

The Belgian world champion was forced to leave the recent Giro d'Italia due to Covid, directly after winning the stage nine time trial and taking the maglia rosa . The race was won overall 12 days later by Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma).

Soudal Quick-Step rider Evenepoel has had to rethink his season after his experience at the hands of covid, and will now centre on defending his rainbow bands at the August World Championships in Glasgow , the team said.

Following the Tour de Suisse, the 23-year-old will head home to Belgium to defend his national time trial champion's jersey and ride the road race. From there, he will head to an altitude training camp in Italy where, says the team, training will start in earnest for his rainbow jersey defence.

“It has been quite the challenge to see a pathway through the rest of my season," Evenepoel said in a statement released by the team . "We know that my main goal of this year was the Giro d’Italia and what happened was really unfortunate, so it was important to plan the right path with the team management.

"I think to begin in Suisse is the perfect start, and it allows me to revisit a race where I have good memories from my time trial win last year.”

The altitude camp in Val di Fasso, he said, would be "a great place to start looking forwards to the World Championships."

Evenepoel rode the Tour de Suisse last year, winning the final day time trial just ahead of Geraint Thomas and Stefan Küng. He was second in the young rider competition, finishing 11th overall.

As he did in 2022, Evenepoel will encounter a mix of lumpy, mountainous, and time trial stages at this year's Tour de Suisse. With two flat time trials bookending the eight-stage race, Evenepoel may even find it suits him even better this time round. There is a trio of mountain stages in the middle of the race – including one summit finish – with hilly stages either side.

The Tour de Suisse starts next Sunday 11 June, and runs until the following Sunday 18 June.

Tour de France 2023 A No Go For Evenepoel

Belgian cycling star Remco Evenepoel confirmed Friday he will return to competition for the Tour de Suisse after pulling out of the Giro d'Italia while leading after he tested positive for Covid.

"I think to begin in Switzerland is the perfect start, and it allows me to revisit a race where I have good memories from my time trial win last year," the world champion said in a statement issued by his Soudal-Quick Step team.

"It has been quite the challenge to see a pathway through the rest of my season.

"We know that my main goal of this year was the Giro d'Italia and what happened was really unfortunate, so it was important to plan the right path with the team management."

After the Swiss stage race from June 11-18 and the Belgian Championships, Evenepoel will prepare at altitude at Val di Fassa in the Italian Dolomites before the World Championships in Glasgow in August.

The Belgian has six wins this season including the Liege-Bastogne-Liege, but will not be competing in this year's Tour de France.

Evenepoel, 23, the Giro favourite, left the race on May 14 after a positive Covid test.

The rider, who won the world championship and the Spanish Vuelta last season, said leaving the race was "definitely one of the hardest setbacks in my still very short career".

"A very brutal end of what could have been a beautiful story. 6 months of full preparation for only this race. Sacrifices, long days in the rain, long periods away from home. Everything was going according to plan but that is how sport goes," he added.

Remco Evenepoel’s Latest Strava Rides Signal Return to Form

After an impending altitude camp in Spain, the SoudalQuick-Step rider should return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné or the Tour de Suisse.

82nd paris nice 2024 stage 1

The 24-year-old Belgian superstar named the nearly 100-kilometer ride “On My Way Back,” no doubt a nod to his aim of getting back into shape for this summer’s Tour de France .

The following day, he posted a 129-kilometer loop he called “ Up the Dose .” And a day after, Evenepoel posted another ride , a 122-kilometer out-and-back north of Brussels.

And now, after an impending team altitude camp in Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountains, the SoudalQuick-Step lead man’s late spring will have him return to racing either at the Critérium du Dauphiné or the Tour de Suisse, with eyes on contesting Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič at the Tour de France.

Evenepoel was one of several Grand Tour favorites caught up in the horrific crash at ItzuliaBasque Country on April 4. The incident also collected Visma-Lease a Bike’s Jonas Vingegaard , Bora-hansgrohe’s Primož Roglič, and UAE Team Emirates’ Jay Vine.

While Vine suffered fractures to three of his vertebrae, it seems that two-time reigning Tour de France champion Vingegaard took the hardest hit, fracturing his collarbone and multiple ribs, suffering a pulmonary contusion and a pneumothorax. Those lung injuries led to Vingegaard’s twelve-day stay in the hospital, which has thrown his ambitions to become the sixth rider ever to win three straight Tours into serious jeopardy. Vingegaard was recently ruled out of his team’s upcoming training camp.

Shortly after the crash, Evenepoel said he felt “lucky” at the extent of his injuries, all things considered. “Everything is quite stable,” Evenepoel said. “I haven’t lost too much fitness, and I can restart pretty quickly. That is a bit of luck I had in the bad luck. I know I still have a lot of work to do. I need to improve my form quite a bit, but I felt good at Paris-Nice and then Basque. I felt I was on schedule.”

According to the man charged with restoring Evenepoel to form, the young Belgian is back on schedule. “After working a lot on his mobility, (Evenepoel) is already back on track,” Thijs Hertsens, Evenepoel’s Antwerp-based physiotherapist, told Sporza last week.

One of Hertsens’ other big-name clients, Wout van Aert , also returned to the road recently, posting some shorter (by a WorldTour cyclist’s standards) rides to his Strava . Van Aert’s season hit a major snag when he crashed out of Dwars door Vlaanderen . The wreck left van Aert with a broken collarbone and several broken ribs. The injuries and subsequent recovery caused him to miss the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix and has thrown the rest of his season, which was slated to include his first Giro d’Italia , into question.

Van Aert will now shift his focus to the Paris Olympics , where the Visma-Lease a Bike all-rounder will be teammates with his Soudal-Quick Step rival. Both he and Evenepoel ride for Belgium.

“Cyclists are hard workers by nature, so it is very pleasant to guide them,” said Hertsens.

Cycling star Evenepoel targets June return from crash ahead of Tour de France and Paris Olympics

  • Copy Link copied

BRUSSELS (AP) — Two weeks after crashing heavily in Spain, two-time world champion Remco Evenepoel said on Friday he’s on track to race again in June ahead of the Tour de France and Paris Olympics.

The Belgian needed surgery after breaking a collar bone and shoulder blade in a crash while descending in the Tour of Basque Country.

Evenepoel will train at high altitude before a planned return to racing at the Critérium du Dauphiné in France from June 2-9 or the week after at the Tour de Suisse, he said in an interview broadcast by his team Soudal–Quick-Step.

He won the worlds time trial last year and the road race in 2022, and should target both Olympic events on the streets of Paris on back-to-back Saturdays — July 27 and Aug. 3. First, he will make his Tour de France debut on June 29.

“It’s going to be something special. Especially the Tour,” Evenepoel said. “It makes it a bit easier to do Tour-Olympics because it’s in the same country, not too far like it was three years ago to go to Tokyo. That was more difficult for a lot of guys.”

Evenepoel raced in both Olympic road events in Japan. He placed ninth in the time trial, more than one minute out of the medals and trailing 2 minutes, 17 seconds behind gold medalist Primož Roglič.

Roglič was caught up in Evenepoel’s crash in Spain and also will miss the one-day classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. Evenepoel won the past two editions of the storied race.

Evenepoel said the early spring injury gave him time to recover like it was a midseason break. It let him spend the Eid al-Fitr holiday last week with his wife Oumi Rayane and her family.

“That was a very beautiful day,” he said. “It’s better to have the injury now than in a couple of weeks. It’s a bit of luck in my bad luck.”

Next round of Primoz Roglic & Remco Evenepoel's rivalry set for the Tour de Suisse?

Rumours are circulating that the recent Giro d'Italia winner, Primoz Roglic could be set to return to racing at the Tour de Suisse . With Remco Evenepoel also rumoured to be competing, we could see the latest instalment in their rivalry.

It seems to be doubtful that Roglic will return to the Tour de France later this year with the Slovenian opting instead to try and take the win in the only one-week stage race he is yet to take a victory. After already having been successful at Paris-Nice, Tirreno–Adriatico, the Volta a Catalunya, the Itzulia Basque Country, the Tour de Romandie and the Critérium du Dauphiné, only the Tour de Suisse is missing from his palmares.

UCI Rankings Update | Primoz Roglic soars to 2nd; Almeida, Thomas and Pinot surge through rankings

No one has ever completed the entire set so this quest for a piece of cycling history is something that the Slovenian, Jumbo-Visma leader is understandably keen to achieve, although Remco Evenepoel may yet have something to say about that.

Primoz Roglic and former ski teammate describe time-trial incident: "I reacted completely instinctively and tried to get him back in motion"

Remco Evenepoel's Tour de France ambitions back on track after high-speed Itzulia crash

T hree weeks on from fracturing collarbone and scapula at Itzulia Basque Country, Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) is back in training in preparation for his debut at the Tour de France .

The Belgian star posted the first activity to his Strava account since the horrific crash, which also left two-time defending Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) with a pneumothorax, broken collarbone and ribs.

“On my way back,” Evenepoel titled a 98.7km ride near into Flanders from home to the west of Brussels.

Evenepoel's injuries are not as severe as Vingegaard, who only got out of hospital in Spain last week. He was swiftly back in Belgium for collarbone surgery and recovered quickly, convinced that he can still be ready for the Tour de France Grand Depart on June 29.

The ambitious, but realistic 24-year-old, stated earlier this season that reaching the Tour de France podium in Nice at the end of July "would be a dream come true".

Evenepoel enjoyed a final day of recovery with a trip to Britain to see Arsenal football match in London. The time trial World Champion then completed a near-three hour 98.75km ride around Schepdaal, where he grew up, at a solid average speed of 34.7km/h.

The next step on the “#RoadToFrance” as his caption read will see him head to Sierra Nevada for an altitude camp with Soudal-QuickStep. Following this, he will be off to either the Critérium du Dauphiné or Tour de Suisse, depending on fitness, to regain his race rhythm and punch before the Tour kicks off in Florence.

Vingegaard in contrast has been ruled out of attending Visma-Lease a Bike’s upcoming training camp with an appearance at the Tour still in doubt unless he is at his best according to the Dutch team.

If the Dane is to miss out, Evenepoel and Primož Roglič (Bora-Hansgrohe), who also crashed out of Itzulia but without any fractures, would become the top contenders to challenge the former two-time Tour winner Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates).

Evenepoel’s compatriot Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) has similarly been making a return to riding on the road since crashing out of Dwars door Vlaanderen in March. The Belgian pair share the same physiotherapist who has overseen their returns to fitness.

Thijs Hertsens from LAB Antwerp is the man looking after the superstars in Belgium and his work hasn’t gone unnoticed with both men returning to the road this week.

Van Aert was shown on video turning the pedals for the first time since his high-speed crash on Wednesday.

"After working a lot on his mobility, he [Evenepoel] is already back on track,” Hertsens told Sporza earlier this week, clearly aware of how close Evenepoel was to getting back out on the road.

Van Aert has worked with the physiotherapist since his awful crash at the 2019 Tour de France and Evenepoel since his horror incident at the 2020 Il Lombardia.

"Cyclists are hard workers by nature, so it is very pleasant to guide them,” said Hertsens.

Van Aert's goals have been derailed due to his crash but he will switch focus to the Paris Olympics where he and Evenepoel will lead a top-level Belgian team that will want to claim both the road race and the time trial.

Remco Evenepoel back in action at Tour de Suisse after COVID-19 recovery

World champion back in the saddle on June 11 ahead of Belgian National Championships

Remco Evenepoel at the Giro d'Italia

Following his COVID-19-enforced abandon from the Giro d'Italia last month, Remco Evenepoel is preparing to return to racing at the Tour de Suisse, which starts on June 11.

The Belgian has fully recovered from the virus which saw him abandon the Giro from the race lead after nine days of racing, and his first race back will be in Switzerland, where he won the closing time trial last summer.

Evenepoel's June plans will see him take on the eight-day Tour de Suisse , which includes a time trial at either end of the race, before heading home to defend his Belgian time trial title in Herzele on June 22.

He'll then tackle the road race in Izegem three days later before joining his Soudal-Quickstep teammates at a two-week altitude training camp in Val di Fassa in the Italian Dolomites, his team confirmed.

Remco Evenepoel out of Giro d'Italia following COVID-19 positive Remco Evenepoel describes Giro d'Italia abandon as one of his hardest setbacks Too soon to talk about Remco Evenepoel riding the Tour de France, says Lefevere

A Tour de France debut has been definitely ruled out after Evenepoel was forced out of the Giro, his main goal of the season. Instead, he'll prepare for a defence of his world title in Glasgow, with the 271km men's road race falling on the first weekend of the Road World Championships on August 6.

"It has been quite the challenge to see a pathway through the rest of my season," Evenepoel said in a statement released by his team. "We know that my main goal of this year was the Giro d'Italia and what happened was really unfortunate, so it was important to plan the right path with the team management.

"I think to begin in Suisse is the perfect start, and it allows me to revisit a race where I have good memories from my time trial win last year. Hopefully, I can take some good legs from there to the Belgian Championships, to defend my TT title and to see what I can do in the road race.

"And then I can spend some weeks at altitude in the beautiful area around Val di Fassa. I have really enjoyed training there before and it is a stunning place to visit, with the advantages that being at altitude give, and it's a great place to start looking forwards to the World Championships"

Evenepoel hasn't raced since leaving the Giro d'Italia on the eve of the first rest day on May 15. He had worn the maglia rosa early on after winning the opening time trial in Abruzzo and then reclaimed the race lead after doing the same at the 35km test against the clock in Cesena on stage 9, albeit by a smaller margin than many expected.

Later that evening, Soudal-QuickStep announced that he was out of the Giro after coming down with COVID-19. Two days later, four of his teammates would leave the race ahead of stage 11 amid a wave of positive tests in the peloton which saw only 125 riders make the finish in Rome.

Evenepoel will return to racing on the TT bike with the flat 12.7km opening time trial at the Tour de Suisse in Einsiedeln. The Tour de Suisse route then heads to the mountains for three tough stages at Villars-sur-Ollon, Leukerbad, and Le Punt before concluding with another, hillier, time trial running 25.7km from St. Gallen to Abtwil.

The week will set Evenepoel up for a tilt at retaining the Belgian time trial title four days after the conclusion of the race, though the Worlds in early August remains his big goal for the rest of the season.

He's not expected to return to Spain to defend his Vuelta a España title in August, with Soudal-QuickStep team boss Patrick Lefevere ruling it out shortly after Evenepoel's Vuelta abandon.

"He has already won the Vuelta," Lefevere told Het Nieuwsblad . "Nobody would accept any other outcome from him this time. Moreover, it would again require quite heavy and very specific preparation."

Instead, Evenepoel's autumn could see him take on a series of one-day races, including the Donostia San Sebastián Klasikoa in late July, the September duo of the GPs Québec and Montréal, and a season-ending trip to Italy for Il Lombardia .

Visma-Lease a Bike Keeps Faith in Jonas Vingegaard: ‘Winning the Tour Will Be Difficult, but Not Impossible’

Team brass upbeat for vingegaard's title defense despite scrapping altitude camp, dauphiné, bats away rumors van aert will return to racing at tour of hungary..

Visma-Lease a Bike isn’t counting out Jonas Vingegaard and his Tour de France title defense just yet.

Team director Merijn Zeeman told Wielerflits the team is keeping faith that its two-time maillot jaune can bounce back from the horror list of injuries he sustained at the Itzulia Basque Country in time for the June 29 grand départ .

“Winning the Tour will be difficult for Jonas, but it’s certainly not impossible,”  Zeeman told Wielerflits . “He is busy every day with his rehabilitation under the guidance of our medical staff and physiotherapists.

“We will certainly keep open the possibility that he will make it to the start of the Tour in Florence,” Zeeman said Friday. “Jonas is extremely talented and we know that he recovers extremely quickly.”

Vingegaard was one of many riders left with a massive medical report after a high-speed crash decimated the peloton in the Basque tour early last month.

It was a shocking incident that also involved Vingegaard’s “Big Four” rivals Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel, and which left some riders fearing for their lives .

Vingegaard fractured his collarbone, and suffered a bruised lung and a collapsed lung in the crash.

Vingegaard has been busy working behind the scenes to fast-track his recovery since he returned home from a Spanish hospital on April 16 .

“Every week we take stock. The medical staff cannot say much at the moment about the program he can follow in the coming period,” Zeeman told Wielerflits . “We have to wait and see, but we certainly still have hope that he can defend his Tour title.”

Team officials already confirmed Vingegaard would not start the Tour unless he was “100 percent ready” for his high profile clash with Roglič, Evenepoel, and the Giro d’Italia-bound Tadej Pogačar.

No Dauphiné for Vingegaard

Jonas Vingegaard

Visma-Lease a Bike was quick to confirm after the crash that Vingegaard would not attend a planned altitude camp this month.

Zeeman told Wielerflits on Friday that Vingegaard will also not race the Critérium du Dauphiné as previously planned.

The team DS indicated there’s no need for his rider to rush back for the eight-day race, which starts little more than four weeks from now.

“Does Jonas need the Dauphiné to be in good shape for the Tour?” Zeeman said. “Not necessarily. The Dauphiné is certainly not a key race for Jonas towards the Tour.

“I am convinced that with a good training block in that period, Jonas can work on his form to arrive at the start of the Tour in top form,” he said.

Only Thursday, Bora-Hansgrohe updated that Roglič is back on track for the Tour de France after the injuries he sustained in the Basque pile-up, and is scheduled to warm his grand tour engine at the Critérium du Dauphiné.

Unlike Vingegaard, Roglič did not break any bones.

Evenepoel is also slated to race either the Dauphiné or Tour de Suisse as he makes a rapid comeback from his broken collarbone and shoulder blade.

Race program still uncertain for Van Aert

Van Aert

Zeeman also batted away rumors that Visma-Lease a Bike’s other top captain Wout van Aert might return to racing at the Tour of Norway later this month.

The Belgian ace is back putting in big miles on the bike after his crash at Dwars door Vlaanderen, and reports through local media Friday suggested his comeback could be imminent after he canceled his planned start at the Giro d’Italia.

“Wout has not yet reached the point where we can make that choice now,” Zeeman told Wielerflits . “In the most favorable scenario, Norway is feasible for him. But nothing can be confirmed about that yet.”

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Don’t Forget Your Travel Insurance for Moscow

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

9 Things to See in Moscow's Red Square

 Sir Francis Canker/Getty Images

In most cases, you'll be entering Red Square from the north, passing landmarks such as the Bolshoi Theatre and Duma parliament building as you make your way southward. Although you don't necessarily have to pass through the Voskresensky (or Resurrection in English) Gates in order to gain access to the square these days, they definitely provide a sense of arrival, to say nothing of the way their left arch frame's St. Basil's Cathedral if you look from just the right angle.

An interesting fact is that while a gate of some kind has stood here since the mid-16th century, the one you currently see wasn't built until 1994, having been destroyed in 1931 so that tanks could enter and exit Red Square during military parades.

St. Basil's Cathedral

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Few sights are as iconic not only of Moscow and Red Square but indeed of Russia than St. Basil's Cathedral, whose colorful, onion-shaped domes are a symbol of the country around the world. Officially known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, this church has stood since 1561, which is quite miraculous when you consider all the turbulent history that has transpired since then.

Among other things, religion was severely prohibited during the Soviet period , which led some to believe that this emblem of the Russian Orthodox church might not withstand the tenure of the USSR.

An interesting fact is that St. Basil's is the so-called "Kilometer Zero" of Russia; all of Moscow's main roads (which can take you anywhere in Russia) begin at the exits to Red Square. In this way, St. Basil's iconic status also has an extremely tangible element.

The Kremlin

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

When you think of The Kremlin, it's unlikely that positive images enter your mind. The fact that simply saying the word "Kremlin" is too vague a descriptor (most Russian cities have their own Kremlin complexes; you should say "Moscow Kremlin") notwithstanding, this misunderstood place is incredibly beautiful, even if you don't like the policy that comes out of it.

Senate Square

In spite of its name, which refers to the role the building that rises above the square played during Imperial Russia, Senate Square is actually home to Russia's presidential administration, currently helmed by Vladimir Putin. In order to see where Russia's legislature operates from, walk just outside Red Square to the Duma parliament building.

Dormition Cathedral

Dating back to the year 1479, the gold-domed Dormition Cathedral pays homage to an Orthodox religious feast that commemorates the death of the Virgin Mary . As is the case with St. Basil's, it is curious that such a conspicuously religious structure was able to survive through the Soviet period.

Armoury Chamber

Though it takes its name from the fact that it housed Russia's royal arsenal when it was built in the 16th century, the most notable resident of the Kremlin's Armoury Chamber today is the Russian Diamond Fund.

Notable Kremlin Towers

Robert Schrader

The interior of the Moscow Kremlin is more beautiful and inviting than you'd expect, but the walls and towers that rise around it better live up to the intimidation with which the complex is associated.

Borovitskaya Tower

Named to commemorate the dense forest that once stood atop the mount where it's built, this tower is extremely picturesque. Built in the late 15th century, it's visible from most places in the square, and also as you walk along the Moskva River.

Nikolskaya Tower

Also built in the year 1491, this tower currently suffered destruction at the hands of Napoleon's army in the 19th century. What you see now is the result of an 1816 re-design and renovation, though artillery fire during the Russian Revolution also caused superficial damage to the tower, named to honor St. Nikolas of Mozhaysk , so it's difficult to know which elements of it are original.

Spasskaya Tower

Known in English as the "Savior's Tower," this iconic, star-topped tower is perhaps the best-known of all the Kremlin's towers. Built in 1491 like the other two towers on this list, it's certainly the most photographed. As a result of its proximity to St. Basil's, it often makes its way into tourists' pictures.

Mausoleum of Lenin

Just as it's strange to learn how many religious monuments survived through the Soviet period, it's a bit odd to think that Lenin's preserved body still sits in a mausoleum just beneath the walls of the Kremlin on Red Square, given the lack of consensus about the ultimate impact of his Revolution, even in Russia.

It's not guaranteed that you'll be able to see the body (which, believe it or not, seems to be improving with age ) when you go, and if you do you will likely have to wait in line, but even strolling past the outside of the Lenin Mausoleum, flanked by stone-faced guards that almost look like statues, illuminates the gravity of his body still being here.

GUM Shopping Center

You might cringe, at least initially, when you realize that one of the most iconic stops on a tour of Red Square is a department store—until you see said department store, that is. Built in 1893 and known during Soviet times as the State Department Store, GUM  ( Glávnyj Universáľnyj Magazín or Main Universal Store in English) hearkens back to the grandeur of the late 19th century, both seen from the outside (especially, when lit up at night) and the interior, which might have you feeling like you're further west in Europe.

A trip inside GUM is a particularly good idea during winter, when frigid temperatures outside will have you savoring the heat, the quality of souvenirs, confections and other goods sold inside notwithstanding. Also, make sure not to confuse GUM with CDM, which sits near the Bolshoi Theatre, even though both are stunning and iconic in their own right.

State Historical Museum

The Russian State Historical Museum is located near Voskresensky Gates, though you should wait until after you've seen the first few attractions of Red Square and the Kremlin to head back there and go inside. To be sure, as you pass by its facade (whose late-19th century grandeur somewhat obscures that fact that it's currently a museum accessible to the public) you might not even think to try and gain entry.

Once inside the museum, you can plan to spend at least a couple of hours, given that artifacts here date back to the very beginning of the Russian state in the ninth century. As is the case with GUM, this will be a particularly alluring prospect if you visit in winter, when Moscow is arguably at its most beautiful, but certainly at its least tolerable.

Minin-Pozharsky Monument

It's somewhat easy to disregard this monument, which pays homage to the two Russian princes who ended the so-called "Time of Troubles" in the mid-16th century, during which Polish-Lithuanian forces occupied Russia, among other awful things including a famine. That's because the statue currently sits just at the base of St. Basil's Cathedral, which makes it very difficult to photograph or even see without being overwhelmed by that much more famous edifice.

Though the statue originally sat at the very center of Red Square, it came to be an obstacle to the movement of tanks during the Soviet period, much like the Voskresensky Gates. As a result, authorities moved it during that time, and it's stayed where you currently find it ever since.

Kazan Cathedral

Taken by itself, the smokey-pink Kazan Cathedral is an architectural marvel; originally built in the 17th century, the church you find here today, located just north of the GUM department store, dates back only to 1993.

Unfortunately, since it sits not only in the shadow of GUM, but also in the shadow St. Basil's and the Towers of the Kremlin, it's easy to miss entirely if you aren't looking. As a result, you might wait until you've seen just about everything else in Red Square before coming here to take photos, and to appreciate the understated beauty of this oft-overlooked cathedral.

Moskva River

As you head south from St. Basil's Cathedral to exit Red Square, make sure to walk onto Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the Moskva River. If you look due north, you can get an excellent shot of the church framed, on the left, by the towers of the Kremlin. Directing your gaze a bit to the west allows you to see the skyscrapers of Moscow City as they rise above the Kremlin's walls.

Walking westward along the riverbank is also a worthwhile excursion, for the views it provides of Red Square and the Kremlin, as well as the fact that doing so takes you to other iconic Moscow attractions, including Gorky Park and the Pushkin Museum. The views you enjoy from the river and the bridge are particularly stunning at night, though you should make sure you bring a tripod if you want to get a clear picture, given how strong winds over and near the river can be.
