First you may choose to join a local expert and familiarize yourself with the “Fair City” of Dublin during a coach tour highlighting the top sights! This afternoon in Cardiff you have the choice between two activities. First, you can choose to visit St Fagan's National Museum of History, an open-air museum chronicling the history, culture and the architecture of the Welsh people. Located on the edge of the city, this museum contains over 40 original buildings from different historical times, including workers' terraced cottages, farmhouses, shops, a chapel and old schoolhouse. In addition, there is a re-created Celtic village, and the 16th century manor houses and gardens to explore. Or, you can choose to have time at leisure to explore Cardiff's historical center further, including its shops and restaurants.

While in Waterford you have the choice between two activities. First, you can choose to visit Waterford Crystal’s impressive new factory and see first-hand the centuries-old tradition of Irish crystal making. Feel the heat of the furnace and marvel at the skills of the craftsmen on a guided tour of the facility. Buckingham Palace

Day 1 – London

Arrive in London, the capital city of the United Kingdom. You’ll have some time to explore the city, perhaps with a walk along the bank of the River Thames or a visit to one of the museums in Kensington. You might also feel like visiting one of London’s diverse neighbourhoods such as Covent Garden, Westminster, Mayfair or Chelsea.

Day 2 – Stratford & York

Roman Walls and York Minster

Leaving London, we’ll head right into the heart of the English countryside, known for its green rolling hills and beautiful landscapes. The first stop is the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Visit the house where Shakespeare was born and grew up, as well as the nearby visitor centre. Departing Stratford, we’ll head up north to the city of York. Enjoy an orientation walk passing the ancient Roman city walls, York Minster and the collection of ancient narrow streets, known as The Shambles.

The evening is spent in the spa town of Harrogate.  Enjoy a traditional pub meal.

On day three of this England, Ireland, Wales & Scotland Tour we’ll slowly work our way further North. We’ll drive through the Yorkshire Dales and into the Lake District, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a beautiful part of England, known for its writers and poets. We’ll see Lake Windermere and travel through the countryside, which inspired the English poet William Wordsworth and writer Beatrix Potter. The drive continues until we head into Scotland, passing Gretna Green, where couples used to elope and tie the knot.  We continue on to Glasgow, the third largest city in the UK, with an orientation that passes many of the famous sites.  In the evening there is an optional extra to dine at a traditional venue featuring Scottish entertainment.

Day 4 – Edinburgh

A full day to explore all that Edinburgh has to offer! This is the capital city of Scotland, perched on a hill with stunning views all around. Led by a local specialist, highlights of the day include visiting Edinburgh Castle and seeing the Royal Mile, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the beautiful new Scottish Parliament building. In the evening, we return to the same hotel in Glasgow and will have a delicious meal at a local restaurant (included).

Day 5 – Belfast

We’ll head down the Scottish coastline and take a short ferryride across to Northern Island, arriving soon after in Belfast. Belfast is the capital city of Northern Island and we’ll see the City Hall and the place where the Titanic was built. From here, it’s straight to our hotel in Dublin (either Ballsbridge hotel or Mespil hotel)

Day 6 – Dublin

St Patrick’s Cathedral

A full day to explore Dublin, the capital city of Ireland. Joined by a local specialist, you’ll get to see many of the highlights of the city including St Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College, the Guinness brewhouse and more! Spend the day soaking up the special and unique Irish culture.

Day 7 – Ireland

Departing Dublin, we head to the Irish National Stud Farm, famous for rearing racehorses. We’ll have a guided tour of the farm, followed by a walk in the Japanese gardens, considered the finest of their kind in the whole of Europe. From here, admire the medieval castle at Kilkenny Castle before some free time for lunch. We then head south to Waterford Crystal, the factory that produces iconic crystal gifts and high-quality glassware.

Day 8 – Cardiff

Cardiff Castle

Day 8 of this England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales tour is spent in Cardiff. We start the day by taking the ferry over the Irish Sea, and head to Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Highlights of the city include the Millenium Centre, National Assembly and Cardiff Castle. Dinner is also included, and we’ll eat with a local Welsh family in the beautiful countryside.

Day 9 – Bath & Stonehenge

Cross back into England, and head to Bath, a UNESCO World Heritage city that’s famous for its Roman Baths and Georgian period architecture. Having explored Bath, we head to Stonehenge, another UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its neolithic stone circle. In the evening we return to London, staying at the Park Plaza Riverbank/Park Plaza County Hall.

Day 10 – Depart London

The final day of this England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales tour – say goodbye to your fellow travellers and head home!

How I learned to love the slow route home to Ireland

Journeys are about so much more than getting from A to B, as our writer found when he ditched flying for the train and ferry between Dublin and London

T here’s always a moment in the journey from Dublin to London – which I make every month or two, taking the land-and-sea route via Holyhead instead of flying – when I stop what I’m doing – reading or writing or chatting to the person next to me – and think: you don’t get to enjoy this from 40,000ft.

Sometimes it’s at the Britannia Bridge in north Wales. As the train crosses the Menai Strait from Anglesey I can see, off to my right, a concrete statue of Lord Nelson keeping a lonely watch from the shore, and further upriver the grounds of Plas Newydd country house sweeping down to the water. To the left, on a tiny island with a curved jetty, stand two handsome whitewashed houses that will one day disappear beneath the rising sea levels but for now are holding out against the elements.

I’ll pause again as the train trundles past Conwy, with its hulking medieval castle and absurdly pretty waterfront, home to the smallest house in Britain, and later still as we move along the coast beyond Colwyn Bay, and legions of offshore wind turbines can be glimpsed through the haze.

On the return journey, as the ferry heads into Dublin Bay, I’ll cast an eye at Howth Head as it rises up to greet us, followed by the crimson lighthouse at the end of the Great South Wall and the looming red and white chimneys beyond – the unmistakable sign that we’re about to dock in the Irish capital.

People often ask me why I choose to travel between Dublin and London by ferry and rail instead of flying, which is considerably less time-consuming. I’ll respond by talking about the price, or the breezy check-in process with minimal luggage restrictions, or the direct connection into central London, or the carbon emissions, which by one estimate are about 95% lower than going by plane . But the little details – the things you see, the people you meet and the reveries you enter as the journey’s lulling rhythms take hold – matter to me almost more.

When I moved to London in 2002, the idea of taking the slow route home to Dublin didn’t occur to me. Going by air was quick: you can fly city to city in under 90 minutes, though of course you have to factor in the time it takes to get to the airport, clear security, wander through duty-free, wait to board, wait to take off, and go through the associated rigmarole on the other side. And it’s cheap.

Then, about 15 years ago, a friend tipped me off about SailRail, a package that bundled train and Irish Sea ferry tickets into a single fare – connecting not only to London but to any town across Britain with a station. I was dubious about the duration but the price was keen – these days it’s £102.20 return, but back then it was about half that – so I decided to give it a try.

I’ll be honest: I didn’t love SailRailing straight away. Train travel is one of life’s great pleasures but in Britain it can curdle to frustration in the face of delays, cancellations and broken-up routes. It took me a while to work out how to time my journey so I didn’t have to change trains in Crewe and again, 20 minutes later, in Chester. And Holyhead, for all the surrounding beauty of Anglesey, is not a town that makes the heart leap – not, at least, the stretch between the terminal and the ferry dock, which on even the sunniest afternoon feels oppressively grey.

The ships – Irish Ferries and Stena are the two options on the Holyhead-to-Dublin route – can feel dated and a bit tacky, and if you strike out from Dublin on a match day, you have the choice of watching football supporters getting stuck into cooked breakfasts and pints at 8am or joining them. The crossing can be rough, though it would take a serious gale to unsettle one of the bigger boats when its stabilisers are out. (In that kind of weather, I’d rather take my chances on a 50,000-tonne ferry than a dinky commuter plane.)

If you travel with Irish Ferries, which I tend to do, this unfolds within a literary theme park of unparalleled incongruity. The flagship Ulysses is riddled with allusions to James Joyce’s masterwork: you can eat reheated pizza slices (but not pork kidneys) at Boylan’s Brasserie, drink tequila slammers at the Leopold Bloom bar or engage in soft play at the Cyclops family entertainment centre. (The faster ferry, often cancelled if the wind picks up, is ingeniously named the Jonathan Swift.)

Despite – or perhaps because of – these idiosyncrasies, I kept returning for more. For years, I’d SailRail to Dublin and fly back; the journey out of London Euston tends to be smoother, especially if you catch the direct train to Holyhead departing about 9am. But since moving back to Dublin in 2020, I’ve ditched the air option and now actively look forward to my day meandering across the Irish Sea and down through Wales and England. The journey takes eight or nine hours, but without internet to distract me I usually get a solid day’s work done, or at least have time to read and think.

Some distractions are welcome. When the Icelandic volcano eruption grounded European air travel in 2010, I got chatting to two fellow SailRailers on the train out of London. One, delightfully, was the actor who played Gestapo agent Herr Flick in the sitcom ’Allo ’Allo!. The other became a really good friend – and I often thank the ash clouds of Eyjafjallajökull for introducing us.

More recently I’ve fallen into conversation with touring graffiti artists, septuagenarian world travellers and a woman who found God after getting lost in the middle of the Sahara (she prayed for help and a crow appeared to guide her back to safety). Last autumn, when my partner and I took our whippet-saluki over on a morning sailing (pet-friendly cabins are available on Stena) he was lavished with attention by an elderly Traveller couple who told us about similar dogs they’d loved over the years.

The Traveller community uses the ferries a lot, following a route that Irish people with UK connections have taken for centuries. You’ll also encounter plenty of truckers, as well as students, backpackers and people who are averse to flying. What you don’t get a huge number of, among the SailRail contingent, are British tourists. When I mention the package to friends and colleagues in London, few of them have heard of it. And when I tell them the fare, which doesn’t shoot up for last-minute bookings, they’re astonished: £51.10 from London to Holyhead and then on to Dublin by boat? You’re joking, right?

Still, I rarely recommend SailRail without a string of caveats. It isn’t to everyone’s taste. And it could be so much better than it currently is – the rail connections are unreliable and foot passengers on ferries are often treated as afterthoughts. But despite its foibles I’ve come to enjoy the easy pace of the journey and offbeat crowd it throws together. I’ve even developed a fondness for those Joyce allusions.

And I love that long, slow train ride along the north Wales coast, past castles and wind turbines and island houses doomed to vanish beneath the waves. A journey is so much richer and stranger when you travel close to the ground.

While the British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia might be over a year away, with the Six Nations wrapping up, there is never a more opportune moment to look at who the star performers could be.

Sky Sports will exclusively show the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, with all three Tests and six warm-up matches to be shown live.

Ellis Genge progressively got better throughout the Six Nations and it culminated in a brilliant scrummaging performance against France's Uini Atonio.

Atonio has six, yes six, stone on Genge but the England man worked hard, got low, and showed what an asset he can be in that front row.

He is also a leader in the England camp and a voice like that will be essential for life on Tour.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

Position: Wing. Centre

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso made quite the impression in the few games he played for England, his start against Ireland cementing him as a real future star.

Ireland could not figure out how to stop his combination of power and pace and if he can continue to grow in the England shirt, he will be a certain name on Farrell's list for 2025.

Ollie Lawrence

Position: Centre

Another man who had a tournament to remember, when Ollie Lawrence came back into the England side, he showed why he is lethal in that centre position.

He can play any role required - if you need him running hard lines he will, but if you need him using his brute strength to power up the field, he will also do that in abundance.

If he is partnered with a certain Ireland centre, it could be a sensational combination.

Jamie Gibson-Park

Position: Scrum-half

Ultimately, Jamie Gibson-Park is the best scrum-half out there for the Lions at the moment.

His consistency for Ireland is second to none, and his kicking game and match awareness have been integral to the Ireland system that has seen them dominate so much.

A calm head is always needed in such a vital role and Gibson-Park can fulfil that for Farrell.

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Why wouldn't you put this guy on the plane? His sensational World Cup performance plus his performance at the Six Nations would have Bundee Aki down as a dead cert starter for the Lions at the moment.

His ability to make metres is not matched by any worldwide and he will be a lot for Australia to handle.

It could also be exciting to see him partner someone like Lawrence who also has power and pace.

Jack Crowley

Position: Fly-half

A reward for a seamless transition, Jack Crowley can be a solid fly-half option for the Lions.

He has an old head on young shoulders and is never fazed when he makes a mistake, plus he can kick goals like the best of them.

Not many could step into Johnny Sexton's shoes and perform and he did that brilliantly for Ireland.

Finn Russell

Finn Russell will always bring that flair and you know on a Lions Tour he would enjoy himself creatively on the pitch.

Right now, he is probably the most experienced and in-form fly-half option for the Lions and combined with some other big stars, we could see some Russell flair on show.

He also is a sensational goal kicker and that will be vital for Farrell's side.

Duhan Van der Merwe

Position: Wing

A man who can create something spectacular all on his own, Duhan Van der Merwe showed why his pace and power on the wing is pretty much unmatched.

There are not many as big as him who can show individual finesse like he does and he already has a solid understanding with Russell that could serve the Lions well in 2025.

Zander Fagerson

Fagerson is one of the few players in these picks who went on the 2021 Lions Tour. However, he did not play.

The Glasgow Warriors prop has battled against the best of them and could be a solid option off the bench when that front row needs a new breath of life.

Mason Grady

Position: Centre, Wing

Mason Grady didn't get a whole host of minutes across the Six Nations, but when he did grace the field, Grady sparkled.

Scoring in the dying moments of their clash vs Italy, Grady showed that he offers something different with his dazzling footwork and could be someone that Farrell could take on Tour as the Lions look to the future.

Dafydd Jenkins

Position: Lock

The one thing a young captain needs is experience and quickly and a Lions Tour could offer the perfect environment for Wales skipper Dafydd Jenkins to grow.

It would be a vital opportunity for him to use his own voice but learn from other huge leaders across the nations as Wales continue their rebuilding journey.

Aaron Wainwright

Position: No 8, Flanker

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout players in the Six Nations, making metres like no other in that Wales jersey.

His energy was electric and his enthusiasm even when under the pump could be a key asset for the Lions.

The fifth nation: The exiles available

Owen farrell.

Position: Fly-half, Centre

Lions Tours: 3

Although the former England captain may be out of contention for international selection with his move to Racing 92 imminent, he can very much still be picked for the Lions Tour.

As England's top points scorer ever and with three Tours under his belt, his experience could be invaluable and what a storyline it would be to see father and son in action.

Courtney Lawes

Position: Lock, Flanker

Lions Tours: 2

Lawes retired from international duty after the 2023 Rugby World Cup,but he made sure to make clear that he still sees starring for the Lions in his future.

With a year out in France to come, Lawes could earn himself a shirt and when someone with 105 caps comes knocking, it is hard to turn them down.

Henry Arundell

Position: Full-back, wing

Henry Arundell was originally given a special exemption to represent England after London Irish went into administration, but after making his move to Racing 92 permanent, Arundell has locked his door to international duty for now.

However, Arundell has been a constant star and his pace at the back could be huge for the Lions if they come calling.

He knows how to score tries and in a Lions shirt, he could thrive.

Ireland fall to back-to-back defeats to begin their Euros qualifying campaign. Not entirely unexpected, it has to be said given the quality of opposition. In the end, set pieces and long throws were Ireland’s only source of attacking threat. They don’t have the quality to compete with a side like England any other way. Which makes you think, why did Megan Campbell and her unique, throw-in threat not start the game?

That’s that, full-time, Ireland fall to defeat.

90+3 mins: Ireland appeal for a handball in midfield but nothing doing. A ball over the top trickles harmlessly to Hampton who takes another 30 seconds off the clock. This is petering out into a soft ending after Ireland had a threatening period in the last few minutes.

90+2 mins: McCabe gets her name taken for catching Mead late. She’s also just been named player of the match. Hometown bias there, methinks.

Four minutes to be added on.

85 mins: Louise Quinn is a de facto centre forward now. She chases a long ball from Mannion but there’s too much on it. Hampton catches and wastes some time off the clock.

BLOCK! McCabe somehow manages to block Hampton’s attempted clearance and is in on goal. She chases the ball down in the box and, from an acute angle, takes aim. She hits it straight at Hampton who makes the save.

England responds to the pressure with two changes. Chloe Kelly is on for Lauren James, Rachel Daly is on for Alessia Russo.

82 mins: McCabe gets played in behind but the defence tracks her well. She wisely plays the ball back to Campbell for a cross and it’s a beauty of a ball in. Connolly gets a head on it as, again, England don’t look convincing with their aerial defence. The ball is played back out to Campbell who wins a corner.

SAVE! Hayes again is in the mix, getting a head on the corner just yards from goal. Her connection isn’t the best and it’s also straight at Hampton.

80 mins: Hayes is again involved high up the pitch as she gets a header on McCabe’s cross. This one was a harder chance as her effort sails harmlessly wide.

79 mins: This time, Ireland opt to mix it up. Campbell feints the long throw before going short to McCabe, who instead launches the ball into the box. This one is much easier for Hampton to deal with as she catches and clears.

77 mins: CHANCE! McCabe’s free has too much on it but Quinn slides brilliantly to send the ball back across the six-yard box. Hayes has an open goal in front of her but can’t get the ball out from underneath her feet and England hack it behind for a corner. What a chance that was. Ireland’s best of the night so far.

76 mins: Campbell’s long through leads to another melée of bodies. Hampton somehow fights through the traffic to punch clear, but James fouls Kiernan to give McCabe a chance from the set piece.

75 mins: Half a chance for Ireland as Kiernan pounces on a loose pass high up the pitch. Carter though defends the break very well, blocking the cross before muscling Kiernan off the ball and clearing.

England make another change: Toone off, Stanway on.

70 mins: Not for the first time tonight, Ireland’s quality in the final third - or lack thereof - lets them down. McCabe drifts from one wing to the other to open up space, but Mannion’s attempted pass to Kiernan evades everyone and goes out of play. That final ball is proving elusive.

68 min: Over the bar! Toone tries to place it in the top corner from distance. Brosnan never looked worried as the ball sails over the bar. Not by much, but Brosnan looked like she had it covered.

67 mins: Another Ireland change. Emily Murphy replaces Carusa up front.

66 mins: SAVE! Patten is caught napping by James out wide who then swings a beautiful ball into the box. Mead heads the ball across the face of goal for the onrushing Kirby. She catches the volley well but hits it straight at Brosnan. She didn’t know a lot about that one, but she keeps the ball out of the net.

63 mins: Campbell’s throw-ins have injected some life into this Ireland effort. England nearly make a mess of clearing a long ball in, giving Ireland a corner. McCabe swings it in but Williamson does just enough to get the ball out of the box.

61 mins: Time for Ireland’s changes. Leanne Kiernan replaces Payne in an attacking move, Megan Campbell is on for Lucy Quinn. Campbell’s first involvement is a trademark long throw. England allow the ball to bounce and Carter is able to clear just before Kiernan pounces at the back post.

57 mins: Mead’s first touch involves being absolutely clattered by Carusa tracking back. Welcome to the game.

Two changes for England. Park is off for Kirby. Hemp also goes, Beth Mead comes in.

55 mins: The way England beat the press of Carusa, Payne and O’Sullivan is brilliant to watch. They’re more skilled on the ball and it’s showing. Eventually a crunching tackle from Hayes does stop the momentum but England get it back only to start passing it around the back again.

53 mins: England are knocking it about almost at will. Ireland are chasing shadows in midfield. A poor touch from Hemp does cough up possession but as soon as they get it back, Ireland are unable to hold on as Mannion battles in vain.

50 mins: James is down for England but Ireland refuse to put the ball out. Intentionally, that is. A long ball for Mannion runs long and out of play, allowing James to receive treatment.

49 mins: England’s press is keeping Ireland penned inside their own half, down the right flank. When they do break out, England’s midfield mops up to win possession back with ease.

46 mins: We’re back underway as the second half kicks off with England in possession. Ireland made one change at half-time, Megan Connolly replacing Ruesha Littlejohn.

Then there was this handball against Littlejohn. Probably the right decision to give the penalty. Grenwood made no mistake.

Let’s run through the goals. Firstly, Ireland couldn’t deal with this ball into the box. They had chances to clear, didn’t, and Lauren James punished them.

Ireland have certainly been the worse of the two teams, but England haven’t exactly created plenty of high quality chances. If it wasn’t for a bounce of the ball off a shin, Lauren James wouldn’t have been able to open the scoring, and if Littlejohn had her arm below her head, England wouldn’t have had that first penalty. Two Irish mistakes have cost them dear.

There was some justice, at least, when Greenwood missed a second penalty when Louise Quinn was harsly penalised for a handball that shouldn’t have been given.

Going forward, Ireland have been reduced to asking Payne and Carusa to chase a series of long balls, with limited success.

45 mins: A rare Irish corner. Quinn and McCabe linked up well with the former pressuring England into conceding the corner. From the set piece, a heap of Ireland bodies go to the floor but there are no penalty appeals and England clear.

No added time so that’s that for the first half!

44 mins: The offside flag and McCabe save Ireland. Lauren James would have been in if McCabe hadn’t blocked her run after Russo played the ball in behind. Even if McCabe hadn’t have commited that cynical block, the offside flag went up on James.

43 mins: Payne once again goes on a run chasing a long ball, Carter once again beating her to it. Story of Ireland’s night so far in attack, Payne and Carusa in particular chasing a host of lost causes.

39 mins: Willamson breaks up an Ireland attack and switches the play into attack well. England work an opportunity for James to pull the trigger but Brosnan is able to her right and make a comfortable save.

Here is that controversial penalty given against Louise Quinn. Given the ball deflected off her knee before hitting her arm, should the penalty have been given? Not that it mattered, Greenwood hitting the post with the spot-kick.

37 mins: Payne chases a lost cause of a long ball down the right and does well. She manages to win the ball back as support floods in behind her, but England recover to win it back through Greenwood.

33 mins: What a bonkers first half an hour it’s been. Ireland, somehow, aren’t three goals down but they will definitely have questions about that second penalty. In any case, they try to go on a rare foray into the England half but Payne is cynically pulled down from behind.

OFF THE POST!

Greenwood misses! After slotting the first penalty earlier, Greenwood catches it well but it canons off the post and away to safety. Brosnan dove the right way, so maybe she would have saved it in any case.

ANOTHER PENALTY FOR ENGLAND!

Louise Quinn is furious. Hemp’s cross was a dangerous one, Russo challenging, but the ball bounces off Quinn’s knee and onto her arm. Again, the arm is in the air, which is deemed an unnatural position, but this looks very harsh. Given the late deflection off her own knee, I’m not sure what Quinn is meant to do to get out of the way.

27 mins: For all the errors that have gifted England two early goals, Ireland’s offside trap is working. That’s twice now in the last couple of minutes they’ve stepped up to catch Lauren James offside.

25 mins: A quiet few minutes after the second goal. McCabe is venturing further forward in a bid to influence proceedings, but she’s let down on a counter-attack by a poor touch from Mannion after she had spread the play. James and Carusa are both caught offside at either end of the pitch in quick succession.

Here is that handball from Littlejohn that allowed England to double their lead. It looks a fair decision to me. What do you reckon?

21 mins: Better link-up play from Ireland as Mannion’s cross-field ball finds McCabe in stride. She tries to play in Lucy Quinn in behind, but her first-time pass has too much on it as it rolls through to Hampton in the England goal.

GOAL ENGLAND!

Greenwood sends Brosnan the wrong way from the spot and England have doubled their lead! Disastrous start for Ireland.

PENALTY ENGLAND

Ruesha Littlejohn has given away a spot-kick! She jumped in to block a volley from just inside the box, but did so with her arms in the air. The shot hits her arm which is above her head in an unnatural position and the referee points to the spot.

16 mins: Ireland win the ball back on halfway with McCabe eyeing up a rare opportunity to sprint forward from wing-back. However, the ball to her from Lucy Quinn as poor as England win it back.

GOAL ENGLAND - Lauren James puts the visitors in front!

Ireland fail to deal with a ball into the box, Walsh’s cross headed goalwards by Bronze. It rebounds off Patten and straight into the path of James who slots the ball past Brosnan from 10 yards out. Clinical.

11 mins: Payne quite blatantly pushes over Williamson but no foul is given as Ireland come away with the ball. A stray pass to Lucy Quinn is kept in play, but it kills the counter-attacking momentum. Quinn turns and feeds McCabe behind her as Ireland look to go again.

9 mins: O’Sullivan is dropping deep to try and get on the ball for Ireland and it’s working well. She opens up space only for Littlejohn’s final ball to be misdirected. Payne then wins it back high up the pitch again, only for Littlejohn to again fail to find a green jersey.

7 mins : First effort on goal for either side but it’s a very easy save for Brosnan in the Irish goal. James does well to get a cross in despite Irish pressure but Russo’s header is weak as it trickles into Brosnan’s grasp.

5 mins: Hemp threatens down the left flank for England. She cuts inside Mannion a bit too easily before firing from the edge of the box. Louise Quinn blocks it behind for a corner, which is easily headed away at the front post. Poor delivery.

3 mins: Given the way Ireland have set up, it looks like it will be a long night for Kyra Carusa as the lone forward chasing lost causes. She does well to chase a ball down to win a corner, but McCabe gets it too close to the ‘keeper as Hampton gathers.

2 mins: As soon as England get on the ball, Ireland drop into their shape. It’s a 5-4-1 formation with McCabe and Payne sitting deep as wing-backs. Aoife Mannion shuts this particular attack down with a good challenge before clearing.

1 min: They’re underway at the Aviva! Ireland had an extra long huddle to make England wait before kick-off. It’s Kyra Carusa who gets things underway, rolling the ball back to Denise O’Sullivan as Ireland start with the ball.

Amhrán na bhFiann and God Save the King are out of the way. Minutes away from kick-off now.

There’s a healthy enough crowd in situ in the Aviva. There were over 30,000 tickets sold prior to kick-off, but they’re expecting plenty of late walk-ups.

Mary Hannigan also heard from the England camp this week. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the favourites are playing up Ireland’s chances, but their captain did have plenty of interesting things to say about her Arsenal teammate, Katie McCabe.

The stark stats show that France had 21 attempts on goal to Ireland’s one, and while there was admirable defensive resilience in keeping the French scoreless for the last 84 minutes of the game, the hosts’ failure to be clinical in the last third added some glisten to that effort. And for all the talk of a more progressive Ireland since Pauw’s departure, there was an ‘as you were’ feel to the failure to cause the French any great trouble. —   Mary Hannigan

Good evening all and welcome to this historic occasion. After playing their first game in the Aviva Stadium last year against Northern Ireland, Ireland women once again play away from their spiritual home in Tallaght. Katie McCabe and co are back at Lansdowne Road for this Euro 2025 qualifying clash with England.

This is, of course, the second game of these qualifiers after a narrow 1-0 defeat to France in Metz last week. Can Ireland bounce back to pull off a significant upset now they are back on home soil? We’ll find out in due course.

This tour will be guided throughout the trip, however you will have free time to explore on your own at some points too.

You can leave this tour at any time you wish however the tour operator will not be able to refund any unused days.

As a traveller from USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa you will need an adaptor for types C, E, F, G. As a traveller from England you will need an adaptor for types C, E, F.

• Unfortunately we cannot offer you a visa application service. Whether you need a visa or not depends on your nationality and where you wish to travel. Assuming your home country does not have a visa agreement with the country you're planning to visit, you will need to apply for a visa in advance of your scheduled departure.
• Here is an indication for which countries you might need a visa. Please contact the local embassy for help applying for visas to these places.
• For any tour departing before 2nd June 2024 a full payment is necessary. For tours departing after 2nd June 2024, a minimum payment of €250 is required to confirm your booking with Globus. The final payment will be automatically charged to your credit card on the designated due date. The final payment of the remaining balance is required at least 50 days prior to the departure date of your tour. TourRadar never charges you a booking fee and will charge you in the stated currency.
• Some departure dates and prices may vary and Globus will contact you with any discrepancies before your booking is confirmed.
• The following cards are accepted for "Globus" tours: Visa, Maestro, Mastercard, American Express or PayPal. TourRadar does NOT charge you an extra fee for using any of these payment methods.
