Profiles & Route Tour of Turkey 2024

The Tour of Turkey takes place from the 21st to the 28th of April. It is one of the longest stage-races in the calendar and covers a meaningful portion of the country, in a race that features opportunities for all kinds of riders. We take a look at it's profiles .

PREVIEW | Tour of Turkey 2024

Profiles & Route Tour of Turkey 2024

The first day of racing in Turkey will not be a complicated one, but instead one where the sprinters will have a good opportunity to win the stage and take the lead of the race in the city of Antalya.

Profiles & Route Tour of Turkey 2024

Day 2 of racing in Turkey will be a tricky and complicated one. it features climbing from start to finish, with different lengths and steepness. Towards the end we've got a long ascent and descent as well with plenty explosive climbs in the middle; whilst the final kilometers into Kas are also rolling and feature a hilltop finish.

Profiles & Route Tour of Turkey 2024

Stage 3 from Fethiye to Marmaris is another hilly day, which starts off with four steep ascents where a strong group can go up the road. A day marked by the short and steep climbs. It shouldn't be crucial for the overall classification, but can lead to a very interesting day of racing where many riders can fight for the win.

Stage 4 begins with a climb right from the start in Marmaris which sets the tone for the day. Into Bodrum, it's a day that is expected to end in a sprint but not between all riders, as a few ascents and the uphill drag to the line will limit the amount of riders capable of fighting for victory.

Stage 5 from Bodrum to Kusaddasi is another hilly day where many riders can fight for the win and many scenarios are possible. The day features three ascents early in the day that will set some fatigue; whilst the final kilometers also feature some climbs where attacks are expected.

PREVIEW | Tour of Turkey 2024 stage 5

profile tourofturkey2024stage6

The queen stage, with no doubt. Day 6 of the race is mostly flat but features a long summit finish at Spil Dagi. The final climb is 14 kilometers at 7%, it will create meaningful differences and test the best climbers in the race to their limit.

PREVIEW | Tour of Turkey 2024 stage 6

profile tourofturkey2024stage7

The riders find a day that should be more calm on the penultimate stage of the race. From Cesme to Izmir the peloton faces it's flattest stage to date, and the expected bunch sprint finish will happen at the exact sea level.

Profiles & Route Tour of Turkey 2024

The race finishes, as traditional, in Istanbul. It is always a very interesting stage as well, mostly flat but the small explosive climb to the line always makes for spectacular racing, aided by the technical aspect of the ascent.

Van Poppel Relegated at Tour of Turkey, Mark Cavendish MIA in Sprints So Far

Race jury hands down another relegation, and cavendish among several top sprinters gapped on late climbs: 'i would have preferred the photo with my arms in the air.'.

Danny van Poppel saw victory stripped away Tuesday in stage 3 of the Tour of Turkey after the Dutch sprinter was relegated for an irregular sprint.

The Bora Hansgrohe rider closed down the left side of the sprint for what would have been his first win in 2024, but the race jury ruled he moved too far out of his line. Giovanni Lonardi of Team Polti Kometa, who raised his arms in protest, was awarded the win.

“I needed to win, even if I would have preferred the photo with my arms in the air,” said Lonardi, who also takes the lead. “Van Poppel blocked me out, and the jury saw it that way, too. This decision is right because I felt that I was going to win. I had the legs to do it.”

It’s the latest relegation by a race jury this season that’s seen a few high-profile demotions, including Michael Matthews (Jayco-AlUla) being relegated off the podium at the Tour of Flanders.

TV images showed Van Poppel opening up his sprint in the middle of the road and he swept left just as the course turned slightly right in a technical and tight finale.

Lonardi was coming up on Van Poppel’s right and was being nudged dangerously close to the barriers. The Italian raised his arm in protest just as Van Poppel raised his arm in victory. The jury agreed, and Van Poppel was sent to the bottom of the front group.

“The final corner made the sprint very tricky,” said Bora-Hansgrohe sport director Bernhard Eisel. “This is a tremendous setback for both Danny and the team, especially after our intense efforts today.”

Cavendish missing out on opening three sprints

Mark Cavendish

Missing from the fray Tuesday was Mark Cavendish . The 38-year-old was distanced on late climbs and lost options for the sprint. The team won Monday’s second stage with Max Kanter sprinting after Cavendish was gapped out.

Cavendish is racing this week at Turkey after illness this spring set him back a few weeks and forced him to miss Scheldeprijs earlier this month.

After winning in the Tour Colombia to open his season, health struggles have slowed down the Astana-Qazaqstan rider since February, and he remains winless so far in 2024 .

Cavendish, who is chasing one more stage victory at the Tour de France to tie Eddy Merckx, is expected to race the Tour de Hongrie in May to continue building his fitness toward the Tour.

The eight-stage race continues Wednesday with another rolling stage featuring a second category climb with about 45km to go that could see another reduced bunch sprint.

The Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey returns to the calendar again keen to show off the natural wonders of the country to the world and to provide an excellent spectacle for bike racing fans.

This year, just four World Tour teams have turned up in the shape of BORA - hansgrohe, Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, Astana Qazaqstan Team and Alpecin - Deceuninck so this will open up opportunities for some of the smaller teams to score a big victory in this prestigious race.

With a host of sprint stages along the route it’s no surprise to see some of the world’s best sprinters present including Sam Welsford (BORA - hansgrohe), Fabio Jakobsen (Team dsm-firmenich PostNL) and back after illness the one and only Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan Team).

Travelling east to west the first seven stages hug the beautiful coast line hopping from town to town, resort to resort before a long transfer to stage eight in the magical city of Istanbul.

Another day, another sprint finish and another win for Tobias Lund Andresen (Dsm-firmenich PostNL), his second win in two days. Navigating the meandering final few kilometres perfectly he once more came out on top and has also increased his lead in the overall classification.

He is unlikely to hold on to it though on stage 6 as it features a 20km summit finish so the climbers will come out to decide the outcome of the race.

Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey 2024 stages

The eight stage tour starts with a predominantly flat 135km around the city of Antalya to provide opportunity number one for the big sprinters before starting its journey westwards along the coast line.

Stage two from Kemer to Kas is a much longer 190km and with a couple of lumps near the start and a sizeable climb 60km from the finish it could see a much more attacking race.

Stage three from the popular resort of Fethiye to Marmaris is a very hilly affair but maybe not hilly enough to get rid of the sprinters who could have their day again at the finish.

There are two classified climbs on stage four including a second category ascent after 94km to shake things up so it is likely a much smaller group will make it into Bodrum to contest the finish.

Stage five between Bodrum and Kusadasi is lumpy again but the climbs are smaller so the pendulum again swings in favour of the fast men, although they will be made to work for it, especially over the final peak with 30km left to race.

Stage six is the queen stage with a mountain top finish at Manisa. This 20km climb takes the riders up above 1000m altitude and will be pivotal in deciding the outcome of the general classification.

Stage seven has just one minor lump just before half way before an absolutely pan flat run to the line and then the race ends with stage eight in and around the bustling city of Istanbul.

Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling  100 Greatest Cycling Climbs , followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes,  RIDE BRITAIN . Simon splits his time between working as a graphic designer and running  his 100 Climbs brand  and lives in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District with his wife and two children.

Tour of the Gila: Marlies Mejias Garcia wins stage 2 as Stephens retains race lead

Repeat victory for Cuban, who out-sprinted Kuskova on stage to Fort Bayard

Marlies Mejias Garcia wins stage 2 at Tour of the Gila in 2024

Marlies Mejias Garcia (Virginia's Blue Ridge Twenty24) scored a repeat victory on stage 2 of the Tour of the Gila, winning stage 2 to Fort Bayard much in the manner she did last year.

The Cuban rider out-paced Yanina Kuskova (Tashkent City) and race leader Lauren Stephens (Cynisca) in the reduced bunch sprint to retain the red jersey.

Earlier in the stage, Anet Barrera (DNA Pro Cycling) went on the attack, as did Céclie Lejeune (Steve Tilford Foundation), Kuskova and Emily Erlich (Virginia's Blue Ridge Twenty 24), but the race came back together after the first two climbs.

Elizabeth Dixon (Fount Cycling) staged a late attack before the final classified climb and built up a lead of almost two minutes before being caught with just 3km to go.

The action for elite women on stage 2 for the Inner Loop Road Race p/b Brian & Lynn Robinson/SW Bone & Joint Institute began at Fort Bayard, established in 1866 to protect settlers moving to southwest New Mexico.

Using a clockwise loop that crossed the Continental Divide twice, the women's peloton traversed 74.1 miles (119.3km) across 6,103 feet (1,860 metres) of elevation gain, the uphill finish line for the women coming 2.1 miles before the end of the men’s race. The route provided three category 3 QOM’s - mile 11.6 mile (18.7km), mile 20.2 (32.5km) and mile 63.9 (102.8km) - plus two intermediate sprints, at mile 5.7 and then mile 41.5.
