- Kuala Selangor Attractions
T here is more to Kuala Selangor attractions than just fireflies and monkeys.
This small historic town is a hidden gem with a lot for visitors to see.
Here is my Top 21 list of Kuala Selangor attractions . They are arranged in the order that they appear on the map (below), not in order of preference. It is possible (just!) to cover them all in one long, tiring day but why rush? There are places to stay at Kuala Selangor or, since it is only an hour's drive from KL, just go again another day.
Map of Kuala Selangor Attractions
1. Tanjong Keramat Fort
The ruins of this fort, also known as Bukit Belanda (literally ‘Dutch Hill’) are located on a low hill close to the mouth of the Selangor River. It was originally built by Sultan Ibrahim, the 2nd Sultan of Selangor, who reigned from 1782-1826. It was captured by the Dutch in 1784 who renamed it Fort Utrecht . The fort was a two storey structure built of granite and clay and its walls were fortified with cannons. There were two entrances, one on the north and the other on the east. The site is now overgrown with grass and there is little evidence of the structure apart from mounds where the walls once stood.
2. Makam Keramat Anak Dara
Nearby on a small rocky hill is a shrine venerated by the locals called Makam Keramat Anak Dara or Virgin’s Grave . It is accessed by a rickety wooden staircase. There is a signboard outside which tells the story of a young pious girl who was forced to marry a man she did not love. On the morning of her wedding she disappeared while washing in the river. She later appeared in a dream to her parents, asking that they not look for her as she had found a better place. The next day her clothes were found on a tree and the parents decided to build this shrine where they were found. If this happened nowadays, police would be unlikely to accept the dream explanation and might suspect foul play!
For more photos of the shrine, see my blog.
3. War Memorial
In the middle of a roundabout at the start of Jalan Keramat Tanjong (see map) is a small obelisk erected by the British to honour Allied and local soldiers who died during the two World Wars. The original bronze plaques listing the names of the fallen have been removed, probably by scrap metal thieves, and replaced by two wooden boards inscribed Medan Perwira (Bellamy) . You can find information about this war memorial on the website of the Malayan Volunteers Group.
4. Royal Mausoleum & Meriam Penggawa
The next 11 Kuala Selangor attractions can all be found on Bukit Melawati , the main hill in the heart of Kuala Selangor. To tour this hill, you can either take the Tram Ride (see below) or walk. The first building you pass is the Royal Mausoleum (Makam Diraja) . This royal burial ground contains the graves of the first three Sultans of Selangor who died in 1782, 1826 and 1857 respectively. In the grounds of the mausoleum is the Penggawa (Chief) Cannon , wrapped in yellow cloth. This cannon was found in 1966 on the banks of the Buluh River, 12km south of Kuala Selangor. The cannon is also known as Petoi Boga which means White Princess .
5. Poisoned Well
Next you will pass the poisoned well which was said to have been poisoned with a mixture of latex and itchy bamboo shoots and used to drown traitors. Some plastic water bottles appear to have been added to the mix by thoughtless litterers.
6. Traditional Games Museum
This museum was unfortunately closed during my visit. Its opening hours are supposed to be 9:30am to 5:30pm daily (closed on Mondays). Free admission.
7. Lighthouse
The Kuala Selangor Lighthouse is the town's most famous landmark and symbol. It was built in 1907 and is also known as the Altingsburg Lighthouse which was the old Dutch name for Bukit Melawati. It is 27m high and its light can be seen 18 nautical miles away. It is not open to the public.
8. Moon Viewing Pavilion
In front of the lighthouse is a modern pavilion which was built specifically for the purpose of sighting the new moon to determine the beginning and end of the Holy Month of Ramadhan and other events on the Islamic calendar.
9. Historical Museum of Kuala Selangor District
The Kuala Selangor Historical Museum (Muzium Sejarah Daerah Kuala Selangor) provides information such as the development of the town and its surrounding area, its role as a trading centre for the collection and export of tin and how Kuala Selangor became the capital of Selangor State. The museum relates 3 possible theories on how the name Selangor originated, the most colourful of which is that it comes from the words salang and jemur , referring to two types of torture which might have been carried out here. The museum contains some dioramas, displays of old weapons, specimens of old currencies and other artefacts. The museum is open daily from 9:30am - 5:30pm (closed on Mondays). Admission is free.
10. Monkeys
There are troops of loveable silver leaf monkeys (silvered langurs) who like to frequent the road and tree branches in front of the museum. This is where the tram bus stops and the monkeys have become accustomed to being fed by visitors. There are usually vendors here selling food for monkeys. They are not shy of humans at all and will take food from your hand, whether you want to give it or not! The monkeys are very cute especially the babies which are bright orange colour. The monkeys are among the most popular of Kuala Selangor Attractions.
11. Batu Hampar
This 'bedrock' is a large stone situated in the corner of what was the Sultan's garden. Some say it was used to behead traitors while others, more probably, claim it is where the Sultan used to sit to watch the sun setting over his domain while enjoying the cooling breeze which blows across this corner of the hill.
12. Melawati Fort
Nearby are some well preserved stone walls of the original fort (Kota Melawati) and cannons are strategically positioned with far reaching views over the surrounding area.
13. Melawati Mound
This 12 foot high mound was built during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim who used to observe cock fights here. It is believed that under the mound is a door to a cave which acted as the government's treasury. Could there still be treasure buried here?
14. Tram Ride
The path brings us back to the starting point of the Bukit Melawati trail which is also where the pick-up point and ticket office for the Tram ride is located. Tickets are RM5 adult and RM3 child (ages 3-12). This ride also includes the fish park (see below).
15. Taman Ikan Air Tawar
A short walk away is this small freshwater fish park with a few aquariums displaying a number of local fish species such as the Toman. There are also a couple of modest aviaries and a lotus pond. The entrance fee is RM2 for adults and RM1 for children. You can find more details on my blog .
16. Kuala Selangor Nature Park
Kuala Selangor Nature Park is made up of mangrove forest, mud flats and secondary forest habitats and is a sanctuary for many bird and animal species. Read about it here.
17. Auntie Foo
A good place to take refreshment is Auntie Foo's located in a heritage style building in the town centre. The sign outside this smart café says 'since 1935'. They sell home made ice creams , dried local seafood products and souvenir items and provide brochures and maps on local attractions. They have wifi.
18. Chinese Temple
On the opposite bank of the River Selangor are a couple of Chinese temples, one of which is called the Monkey God Temple.
19. Seafood Restaurants and shops
Next to the Kuala Selangor jetty are a few seafood restaurants and shops selling dried fish and other seafood products.
20. Fireflies at Kampung Kuantan or Firefly Park Resort
After dark the must-see Kuala Selangor attractions are the fireflies. The mangrove swamps along the banks of the Selangor River are one of a handful of places in the world where fireflies gather in such huge numbers. A firefly is a type of tiny beetle whose tail flashes on and off at night to attract mates. Kampung Kuantan and the Firefly Park Resort are two places where boats are taken out nightly to observe the firefly illuminations.
TIP: You can get a discount on Firefly Park Resort's mangrove boat ride experience by buying online through Tripcarte's secure website with instant ticketing, refundable and hassle free e-tickets.
21. Shakti Temple Bukit Rotan
The latest of Kuala Selangor attractions is Shakti Temple at Bukit Rotan on the outskirts of Kuala Selangor. This new temple was consecrated in May 2013 and with its exquisitely decorated sandstone walls and gopuram , it will surely soon be recognised as one of the finest Hindu temples in Malaysia, if not South East Asia. You can read more about this temple on my Thrifty Traveller blog.
This completes my list of top Kuala Selangor attractions but if you feel there any that I have overlooked please let me know.

During low tide, the Sky Mirror I sland reflects an image of the sky, which makes it one of the most impressive attractions of the country. The island remains submerged during high tide and shows its magic during low tide.

Because of this magical mirror effect, hundreds to thousands of local tourists gather here to get a glimpse of the magical place and click some epic shots.

Bukit Melawati was constructed by the local Malays during the 16th century. The Dutch captured the fort during the early 18th century. Later on, in the late 18th century, Sultan Ibrahim recaptured the fort with the help of his two brothers, Penggawa Tua and Bendahara Adb. However, the fort was destroyed during the Klang War (also known as the Selangor Civil War).

It was made such to punish the traitors of the sultan. They were dropped into the well and the contaminated water would rise to the height of their chin and cause them great distress. The main deity of Qi Jian Xian Shi Fo Zu Gu Miao is Di Zang Wang Pu Sa. He is one of the four principal bodhisattvas in East Asian Mahayana Buddhism. Bodhisattvas are people who made resolutions to become a Buddha and also received a confirmation or prediction from a living Buddha that they will become a Buddha.
If we translate the name of Di Zang Wang Pu Sa, it will mean Earth Treasury, Earth Store, Earth Matrix, or Earth Womb. He is popular for his vow to take responsibility for the instruction of all beings in the six worlds between the death of Gautama Buddha and the rise of Maitreya. He also took a vow not to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied.
That’s why he is often regarded as the bodhisattva of hell-beings, guardian of children and patron deity of deceased children and aborted fetuses in Japanese culture.

Sekinchan Wishing Tree, a huge tree with thousands of red ribbons dangling from its branches is a must-see attraction in Redang beach. Although I don’t believe in such stuff, but if you do, you can make a wish by tying a red ribbon with coins around the branch of the tree.
The local seafood restaurants in the area serve the best seafood. You can watch the sunset from the beach or play with soap bubbles and fly a kite. However, don’t mistake the Redang beach for Pulau Redang. Pulau Redang is a beautiful island off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
Swimming, diving, or snorkelling are allowed in Pulau Redang and there are around thousands of differences between Redang beach and Pulau Redang. Honestly, Redang beach is not even near to Pulau Redang in terms of beauty. But it still is worth a visit, especially for budget travellers.
Location: 25, Jalan Jpt, 45400 Sekinchan, Selangor, Malaysia.
25. Batu Caves Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple
The Batu Caves Temple, also known as the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, is a monumental focal point of the contribution of the Indian settlers in the development of Malaya and Malaysia. The temple is around 113 years old inside a cave that is about 400 feet above ground level. The temple is dedicated to Lord Subramaniar.
There’s an interesting history behind the establishment of the temple. You can learn about it on your visit to the temple. The Batu Caves is said to be nature’s wonder. It is a 400 million-year-old limestone hill formed with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. It is also a shelter to some of the rarest species of flora and fauna.
Due to the presence of such wonder, the Malaysian government recognized the place as a religious and cultural centre for the Indians and Hindus residing in Malaysia. Major architectural plans are being made to facilitate the worship of all Hindu deities in the temple.
At the entrance of the steps of Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple, a 130 feet tall statue of Lord Muruga is under construction. Once completed it will be the tallest Lord Muruga statue in the world.

26. Sri Anggala Parameswary Peachiamman Temple
Sri Anggala Parameswary Peachiamman Temple is another famous temple in Kuala Selangor. The temple is around 100 years old, and a lot of tourists come to visit it from faraway locations. They come to Sri Anggala Parameswary Peachiamman to worship Amma, the main deity of the temple. They believe that it is a very powerful temple, and all their wishes might come true after praying here.
According to the local people, Amma’s statue on the ground was formed by nature and it’s not man made. Back in those days, it was a very small temple. The local people who used to pray there about 40 years ago say that the temple used to be dark and scary. There were also no proper roads then.
But now as the temple has gained much public attention, many changes have been made to the temple. Even the road to the temple is now drive-worthy. Surrounding the temple, there are many old palm oil trees that make the area look beautiful. Sri Anggala Parameswary Peachiamman mainly remains crowded during weekends and public holidays.

Opening Hours: Everyday | 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
27. Kota Tanjung Keramat
Kota Tanjung Keramat is a fort that was built by Sultan Muhammad in the year 1830. A major portion of the fort was built from soil despite that it was a very strong defence fort. It is square in shape with two entrances. The main entrance of the fort has a width of 7 metres and is facing the north direction.
The lane from the entrance is curved towards the east side leading to a staircase. The staircase goes down to Pangkalan Bagan Pasir. The other entrance is facing the east side and it was considered an emergency entrance for the army in the fort to get out to bring news from Kota Melawati. When the Dutch captured Kuala Selangor, this fort was renamed Fort Utrecht. They renamed it after their ship.
It’s a great place to learn more about the history of Kuala Selangor. That’s why lots of tourists come to this historical landmark.
Location: Jalan Tanjong Keramat, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor, Malaysia.
28. Virgin’s Grave
Virgin’s Grave , also known as Makam Keramat Anak Dara or Keramat Rubiah, is located at the small village named Kampong Tanjung Keramat. The village is small and situated at the last point of land at the mouth of the river Selangor.
The grave is on a small rocky hill. The sides of the hill have steepened by quarrying. You can climb up to the keramat by the rickety wooden steps. Virgin’s Grave is a white tiled rectangle protected inside a walled structure. There’s a signboard outside the grave to let visitors know the history behind it.
I don’t know why they call it a grave because it’s actually not a grave but a shrine. It is the shrine of an 18-year-old girl, Siti Aishah who ran away from her home to avoid a forced marriage. She was never found but her clothes were found hanging on a tree. So, her parents decided to build a shrine in her honour. It’s local folklore that is written on the signboard, and I think it’s quite interesting and counts as a reason to visit the place.
Behind the Virgin’s Grave, there is a beautiful lake. It was formed due to the excavations of the Japanese during the War. Probably that’s why it was named Lake Shima (Shima means island in Japanese) .
Location: Makam Keramat Anak Dara, Tanjung Keramat, Kuala Selangor, Selangor, Malaysia.
Pondoque Le Ngaju
Pondoque Le Ngaju is a beautiful park in Kuala Selangor. It is a nice place to spend time with family, friends, and children.
Location: 642-1, Jalan Datuk Mansor, Kg Bukit Badong, Btg Berjuntai, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor, Malaysia.
29. Masjid Ar-Raudhah
On the northern coast of Selangor, Masjid Ar-Raudhah is a beautiful mosque at a 19 minutes driving distance from Kuala Selangor. It is located along the main road of Federal Route 5, within the town area of Tanjung Karang.
Masjid Ar-Raudhah was inaugurated by the DYMM Sultan of Selangor on the 16th of June 1989. It has a congregational capacity of 1,000 with comfortable prayer rooms for men and women, an ablution place, car park, store, endowment, imam and Bilal room, and hearse. There are also 5 lots of shops, a library, garden, imam and Bilal house.
The fame of Masjid Ar-Raudhah is due to its beautiful infrastructure. It has a two-storey prayer hall topped with a gilded onion-like dome. The prayer hall is surrounded by 6-storey minarets. Each minaret is topped with a cupola topped with a small onion-like dome.
Talking about the overall architecture of the mosque, it is rectangular in shape with 10 domes and 5 towers. The walls of Masjid Ar-Raudhah are decorated with beautiful calligraphy. Religious programs such as lectures and religious ceremonies are regularly organized in the mosque. Another speciality of this mosque is that the mosque management committee has held a special Mosque Youth Club for youths.
Location: Taman Seri Desa, 45500 Tanjung Karang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Best Time to Visit Kuala Selangor
We can’t specify a particular time to visit Kuala Selangor as all attractions aren’t in their best forms during the same season. However, if you want to know the best time to visit the place based on low crowds and costs, it is during the month of February.
In this small town, huge crowds are seen in June, July and August, so the hotels and flights become expensive. During Winter, it is comfortable to plan a trip to Kuala Selangor. So, overall, December-January will be the best time to visit Kuala Selangor due to the low crowd, inexpensiveness, and comfortable weather.

Kuala Selangor Day Trip – 29 Things To Do In Kuala Selangor
There are plenty of things to do in Kuala Selangor for a day trip! In fact, most of the activities listed here can be found very close to or at Bukit Melawati .
And there are ample hotels in Kuala Selangor and/or homestays in Kuala Selangor to help make your stay more comfortable.
Because there’s a lot to cover, we’re going to break this post down into a few sections:
- Bukit Melawati
Food In Kuala Selangor
Bonus – banting: bukit jugra, bukit melawati kuala selangor.
Bukit Melawati (or Melawati Hill) is a hill in Malaysia near Kuala Selangor that attracts visitors daily, especially on the weekends!
There is no entrance fee and everyone can come and enjoy the scenery and fresh air here!
From the top of the hill, you can see the Straits of Malacca as well as a couple of other landmarks:
1. Seek History At Tanjong Keramat Fort
In the nearby village called Kampong Tanjung Keramat :
You can look for Tanjong Keramat Fort or Bukit Belanda (“Dutchill”) – this is a 2-storey granite and clay building that was built by Sultan Ibrahim, the 2nd Sultan of Selangor and taken over by the Dutch in 1784 .
The walls of the fort and the cannons are not there anymore but you can see the remains of the foundations .
2. Learn About The Legend Surrounding Virgin’s Grave (or Makam Keramat Anak Dara)
Also, in Kampong Tanjung Keramat is a small shrine on a hill that has a sad story tied to it. You can read about it from the signboard outside the shrine.
3. Gaze Upon The War Memorial At Kuala Selangor
Built by the British to commemorate their fallen comrades as well as Malaysian soldiers who lost their lives in World War I and II , visitors can still visit this war memorial today:
Note: The memorial is at the roundabout for Jalan Keramat Tanjong in Kuala Selangor.
However, instead of the original bronze plaques (which were probably stolen), there are now wooden ones that carry the names of the fallen soldiers.

4. Check Out The Poisoned Well
Have you ever heard of people using itch as a torture method?
In its days of use, the poisoned well supposedly contained liquid rubber and scratchy bamboo shoots .
Traitors were possibly drowned here too.
Note: Please don’t throw your litter down here!
5. Admire The Altingsburg Lighthouse
This 27m tall landmark is the symbol of the town.
Its origins date back to 1907 . Today, it is still lit up from 7pm to 6am and the light can be seen 18 nautical miles away.
Visitors cannot go up the lighthouse without special permission. But the Bukit Melawati tram ride makes a stop here.
And because it is a lighthouse, it has good views of the waterways – Straits of Melaka as well as Selangor river .
6. Stop By The Historical Museum Historical Museum of Kuala Selangor (Muzium Sejarah Daerah Kuala Selangor)
Admission to this museum is free and it is here that you can learn about the development of the town. And how Kuala Selangor served as a trading centre for the tin mining industry.
Did you know that Kuala Selangor was the very first capital of the State of Selangor?
It will likely you take you less than an hour to browse through the dioramas, old weapons and other artifacts .
Address: http://bit.ly/Historymuseum
Opening hours: 9:30am to 5:30pm
7. See Silver Leaf Monkeys
These aren’t like the usual brown and bold monkeys that are spread all over Malaysia.
Silver leaf monkeys have dark grey fur and a somewhat gentler disposition (but that doesn’t mean you should let your guard down!).
Bukit Melawati is a great opportunity to see one up close (and for free !). The babies are especially adorable with their persimmon-colored fur !
Despite there being many vendors selling food for the monkeys, do not feed them as it makes them too dependent on humans!
Note: The practice also attracts the more aggressive monkeys!
8. Look Out For Batu Hampar
At Bukit Melawati, you will probably wander across this strange stone feature!
It might look like a normal stone bench but it has history behind it:
There is a claim that the then-ruling Sultan sat here in his garden to watch many sunsets on the hill.
Another more gruesome speculation includes the stone being used to behead traitors a long time ago.
9. Explore Melawati Fort (Kota Melawati)
Unlike the Tanjong Keramat Fort mentioned earlier in this list:
You can still see some of the walls and plenty of the cannons of Melawati Fort!
Take some time to notice the strategic positions of the cannons that overlook the fort’s surroundings!
10. Find Melawati Hill Mound
Melawati Mound is also referred to as Busut Melawati .
The 12-foot-high mound was where Sultan Ibrahim used to watch cockerel fights!
Built during his reign, the mound is on the flat part of a small hill with an ancient Angsana tree close by.
11. Take The Tram Ride Up Bukit Melawati
For adults, the slow ride up the hill may not be particularly exciting. But kids will be thrilled!
You can buy tickets at the entrance of Bukit Melawati at the base of the hill in front of the car park.
Price: RM5 adult and RM3 child (ages 3-12)
12. Peek At The Royal Mausoleum Of Bukit Melawati
By the way, as you make your way down (on foot) from Bukit Melawati, you will see this royal structure !
It’s fenced up to prevent public access but the building is nice to admire!
Address: http://bit.ly/Royalmausoleum
How To Go To Bukit Melawati
You have 3 options – to walk, drive or take the tram up from the entrance to the top of the hill!
I. The Tram Service
Tram Operation Hours: Saturday, Sunday & Public Holiday
Time: 9.00am-6.00pm. The tram doesn’t operate on weekdays.
Ticket Price: Adult – RM5, Children – RM3
Got your own car?
II. Driving Your Car Up
Visitors can drive their own cars up. You can drive up too on the weekends, outside of tram operation hours .
Tip – On a weekend, they let people drive up their cars around 6pm . Officially after 6pm .
III. Using Your Legs
But honestly if you are able-bodied, it’s not a difficult climb up to Bukit Melawati.
The path goes up the road and in less than 10 minutes , you will see the bleached-white lighthouse on top of the hill.
13. Wander Through Kuala Selangor Nature Park (Taman Alam)
The 324 hectares sanctuary is managed by the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS).
Because the park consists mostly of mangroves, mud flats and secondary jungle , you can expect to see many species of birds here ( ~156 species with 57 migratory types)!
You might even spot otters here!
Some common animals you will probably see are fiddler crabs and monkeys !
Address: http://bit.ly/Naturepark
Opening hours: 9am to 6:00pm.
Entrance fee: RM4 (adult), RM1 (student and children below 16)
Note: Malaysian Nature Society members pay RM2.
14. Go On A Boat Tour To Watch Kuala Selangor Fireflies
As the evening approaches, tours gear up to take people out to see Kuala Selangor’s best known attraction: Fireflies!
This is the place to see thousands (now hundreds) of fireflies light up the mangroves along the banks of Selangor River !
Book your ticket now via Klook:
15. Join Eagle Feeding (Or Not)
Something else that’s popular around here is sea eagle feeding!
You hop on a boat with other tourists, and the tour company will take you guys along the river .
The beautiful birds will gather soon enough as the tour guides throw out pieces of raw chicken meat for them to catch mid-air!
Many tour operators combine this activity with other popular Kuala Selangor attractions (like the fireflies).
However, we strongly advise our readers not to go for these tours as this encourages unnatural behaviour among the eagles (e.g., they don’t eat their usual prey causing an inbalance in the local ecosystem). Besides, raw chicken is just unsanitary!
Bonus: Dine At 天空号 Boat Cafe @ Sky Mirror
Ever dined on a boat before?
This may be stationary boat but the atmosphere is no less romantic ! They have alcohol, cheesecake, and Korean snacks ! Certainly not a bad way to end a day of exploring!
You can conveniently time your visit here after a firefly tour too!
Address: 10, Jalan Feri Lama, Pasir Penambang, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Opening hours: Weekdays from 3:30pm to 10:30pm and weekends from 11:30am to 10:30pm (Closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays)
Contact: +6016-223 4788
Kuala Selangor Beaches
There are two beaches that you can visit in Kuala Selangor and each are great spots for viewing the sunset!
The beaches are an hours’ drive apart .
And Pantai Redang is up north while Pantai Remis is south, not far from Jeram .
16. Remis Beach (Pantai Remis)
This small beach often has crowds of people on weekends and public holidays even though it is not suitable for swimming!
Popular activities include trying the fresh seafood sold at the beach, flying kites, fishing and watching the sunset , of course!
Note: Parking can be a struggle with limited parking spots!
17. Redang Beach (Pantai Redang)
Redang beach may share the same names as Redang Island (Pulau Redang) in Terengganu but unlike its namesake, Redang beach at Kuala Selangor is not ideal for snorkelling, diving or even swimming !
However, this is a local hot spot during the evenings.
And occasionally, you might see some migratory birds flying by!
There’s plenty of space for kids to fly kites !
A small Chinese temple and a wishing tree are also close by and worth a quick look!
Other beaches in Kuala Selangor .
Note: Parking is frustrating here too.
While Kuala Selangor isn’t famous for its food, it does have a few establishments that have made their own mark on the town.
18. Auntie Foo Cafe
This quaint cafe is a popular spot for breakfast and is housed in a heritage building in the middle of town.
Popular menu items include their homemade ice-cream ! Western dishes are available on the menu too besides local favorites like nasi lemak. All of which you can enjoy in the air-conditioned environment.
Another must-try at this cafe is the cendol.
They also sell dried local seafood and other souvenirs .
And if you need a map on local attractions, you can pick up one here! Or use their complimentary WiFi to do some research.
Address: 1, Jalan Raja Abdullah, Kuala Selangor, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Opening hours: 8:30am to 6:30pm (Closed on Fridays)
19. Auntie Kopitiam
A bit closer to Bukit Melawati is the sister of Auntie Foo:
The theme at this cafe is the classic old-style Malaysian coffee shop ( kopitiam )!
In fact, it is a typical Hainanese coffee shop. With early opening hours.
You can expect to find these items on the menu:
- Toast with homemade kaya
- Hainanese chicken chop
Of these, the nasi lemak and curry mee are safe orders to make!
Address: C-3, Jalan Sultan Ibrahim, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Opening hours: 8am to 4pm (Closed on Sundays)
20. Café Lumière
If you want something a little fancier and closer to Kuala Lumpur, then this cafe might suit you better:
Besides the delicious western food , you will not fail to appreciate the decor!
They have daily specials here like bangers and mash, sticky lemon chicken and spaghetti bolognese .
Moreover, the coffee will not disappoint! And if coffee is not your thing, they have specialized tea and Kombucha !
However, ordering around 5 items can quickly accumulate to RM100+ so make sure to clarify the prices before placing your orders.
Address: 50, Jalan Stesen, Kuala Selangor, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Opening hours: 12pm to 7pm (Closed on Tuesdays)
Note: For a small town cafe, it comes across as very pricey.
21. Cendol Bakar At Kampung Assam Jawa
If you feel like having some cendol to beat the heat, you can try this one:
Cendol Bakar is a typical Malaysian roadside stall . Prices are low and unfortunately, so is the hygiene standard.
The word “Bakar” (which means burnt in Malay) comes from the gula melaka used in preparation of this particular cendol.
Besides their namesake dessert, you can get other Malay dishes here like mee undang here! Their laksa is recommended too.
Address: Lot 170, Batu 25 1/4, Jalan Klang, Kg Assam Jawa, 45700 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Opening hours: 11am to 7pm (they open earlier at 10am on Saturdays and Sundays!)
22. Kedai Kopi Shin Lok 新乐茶室
If you were thinking of checking out Remis Beach (Pantai Remis) anyways, then it’s worth stopping here for the steamed buns !
Note: This is a 20 minute+ drive from Bukit Melawati!
Steamed buns ( pau ) of various fillings are sold here:
Vegetable is one of their more popular flavors and sell out pretty quick! And if you’ve never tried kaya made with coconut jam and duck eggs before, here’s your chance!
They also have other snacks here like taro dumplings and curry puffs . Meanwhile, the coffee is great too! Be sure to call ahead to check what paus are still available to avoid disappointment.
Address: 1, Jalan Kenari 1, Taman Kenari, Sungai Sembilang, 45800 Jeram, Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Phone: +603-3264 7591
Business hours: 7am to 5pm (Closed on Mondays)
23. Beggar Chicken in Ijok
30 minutes’ drive from Kuala Selangor is the small town of Ijok.
The reputable restaurant that sells the dish “ beggar chicken ” is found in an unlikely place:
A house hidden near an oil palm plantation where the tables are within the compound of the house. There’s no air con here so prepare yourself for the heat if you’re coming for lunch.
Most importantly, make a phone reservation first before dropping by! As they may not be accepting dine-in guests on the day of your visit.
Other than the beggar chicken, you can order other Chinese dishes like:
- Stir-fried cos lettuce (yau mak)
- Glutinous rice (八宝饭) – beware of the large serving! Fit for 6-8people!
- Pork maw soup
- Braised pig trotters
- Salted egg rice
Don’t forget to try their signature, home-made kumquat (金桔) drink !
Note: The beggar chicken made here is not too dry and has a strong taste of Chinese herbs.

HULU SELANGOR: Former Umno veteran Tan Sri Noh Omar praised MCA for having dignity after it decided to sit out of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election when Barisan Nasional endorsed a DAP candidate.
According to Noh, Kuala Kubu Baharu was traditionally an MCA seat.
“It was formerly an MCA seat and the Barisan chairman just announced that MCA is not contesting this seat.
“That is why MCA was upset. MCA has dignity and integrity. I respect MCA leaders for having dignity,” said Noh at a ceramah at Batang Kali on Wednesday (May 1) night.

Noh also said he was amazed at Gerakan for giving way to Bersatu to contest the seat despite losing the seat in the last state elections.
“This shows unity and respect among one another. Unlike Barisan,” added Noh.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat was held by MCA from 1986 until 2013 when it fell to DAP’s Lee Kee Hiong.
Lee held the seat from 2013 until this year when she passed away after a battle with cancer.
Last month, MCA had announced that it would sit out of the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election.
The Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat is seeing a four-cornered fight between Pakatan Harapan’s Pang Sock Tao, Perikatan Nasional’s Khairul Azhari Saut, Independent Nyau Ke Xin and Parti Rakyat Malaysia’s Hafizah Zainudin.
