  • Tourist Arrivals In Thailand By Country

Over the years, Thailand has developed into a very popular tourist destination.

Thailand is the leading tourist destination in Southeast Asia with its tourism industry spanning close to 70 years of history. Tourism contributes about 9 to 10% to the total GDP. The number of tourists visiting Thailand has been on a steady rise throughout the years reaching up to 30 million visitors annually, although the numbers sometimes decline due to unrests and security threats. However, Thailand’s tourism industry remains an all-time high, especially during the December-January peak festive season. Thailand is a unique place to visit for its natural, cultural and historical heritage and the warm tropical climate which is favored by tourists escaping the cold winters found in their countries. The rising medical tourism industry has attracted tourists who come for holidays while getting medical care.

China has had the largest number of tourists visiting Thailand over the decades with the number expected to keep rising. In 2016, about 8,757,466 Chinese tourists visited Thailand making up for more than 25% of the total number of tourists. During 2017's first quarter, China recorded a total of 2,439,076 tourists bound for Thailand. A large number of Chinese tourists are linked to the low-price package tours which enable small budget travelers to visit Thailand regularly. However, the Thai government has discouraged these package tours as they limit the amount of spending by the tourists, earning little revenue despite a significant number of visitors.

Malaysia is the second leading country in the world and the leading ASEAN country which sends tourists to Thailand with a total of 3,533,826 visitors in 2016 and 813,865 visitors between January and March 2017. Close relations between the two countries as well as the promotion of Thailand’s tourist attractions across ASEAN countries has played a significant role in increasing the number of Malayan visitors. The shared Buddhist traditions also attract Malaysian tourists who wish to attend pilgrimage and festivals outside their own country.

Russia is the leading western country which sends the highest number of tourists to Thailand and the third leading overall. In 2016, approximately 1,089,992 Russians toured Thailand, and another 488,987 Russians visited the country between January and March 2017. Long-term close relations between Russia and Thailand have contributed to the longstanding preference for Thailand as a tourist destination by Russian tourists. Thailand’s government is however concerned with the number of Russian tourists which is considered too small.

South Korea

South Korea and Thailand have bilateral relations, with Thailand being considered a top destination for South Korean tourists who visit in large numbers. South Korea makes up about 6% of the foreign tourists in Thailand. About 1,464,629 South Koreans toured Thailand in 2016 and another 463,278 in 2017’s first quarter. Most of the Korean tourists come in group tours and only about 20% visit Thailand as independent tourists.

Future Prospects

With the aim of improving Thailand’s tourism industry, the Tourist Authority of Thailand has put forward several measures such as banning cheap tourist packages which in turn will improve and encourage tourist spending. The goal of the initiative is to promote richer tourists to spend more while in Thailand. The authority markets Thailand through initiatives such as experience Thainess campaign and use of the slogan “Amazing Thailand.” Other countries with high numbers of tourists to Thailand include Japan, Laos, India, Germany, the US, the UK, France, Singapore, Vietnam, and Australia.

Tourist Arrivals by Nationality in 2022 (Visitors again !) and 2019 (last 'full' year of Arrivals)

  • Tourist Nationalities 2019 | 2022

Data for 2022, restart of Tourism Economy

For all practical purposes, the tourism economy in Thailand restarted in 2022, with the number of visitors increasing markedly each quarter of the year. At the end of the year a total of 11,153,026 tourists had visited, which was a most welcome result, and greatly anticipated. A total of 39,797,406 tourists had visited in 2019, so the number of 2022 was 'just' 28% of that. In any case, the number of arrivals towards the end of the year, was very promising for 2023. We give a short review of the arrivals in 2022, below you will find data also from 2019.

Visitors from different world regions to Thailand in 2022

The image above compares arrivals from different world regions in 2019 (blue) and 2022 (orange). Mostly the number of arrivals was proportionally less for all regions. Except for arrivals from Eastern Asia. Only few Chinese visitors arrived, actually stringent Covid-19 restrictions were just lifted towards the end of 2022. Only arrivals from Japan and Taiwan were limited. We expect better numbers for 2023, since in January 2023 Chinese travelers already started arriving.

Tourist arrivals from different countries to Thailand in 2022, when most Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.

Most visitors came from countries as listed above. Chinese visitors numbered just 274,000 while more than 10 million arrived in 2019. The biggest provider of mostly short-term visitors was Malaysia, which makes sense, since it is a neighboring country. Chinese visitors made up just 2.5 % of total visitors, while in 2019 they made up 27.6% of total visitors. One striking trend, and also visible in the streets of Bangkok, are the increasing number of visitors from India. In 2022 they made up 8.9 % of total visitors, compared to 5.0 % of total visitors in 2019. So maybe in a few years Thailand will receive prominent numbers both from India and China (visitors to Indo-China !).

Data for 2019, last 'full' year of Tourist Arrivals

The data here go back to 2019, the last year when millions of tourists visited Thailand. With Covid-19 from the start of 2020 till the middle of 2022, there were no or not many tourists arriving. However, since beginning 2022 there was improvement, and restrictions that applied have been cancelled or more relaxed since 1 July 2022. As of the end of 2022, there were no obvious restrictions for visiting Thailand.

Tourism Statistics :

The number of tourist arrivals in Thailand, with some hiccups, has steadily increased over the last two decades. As recent as 2010 there were 'only' 15.94 million visitors to the country. By 2015 this had increased substantially (almost doubled) to 29.92 million visitors. Now in 2019 the number has increased to 39.8 million visitors. It was a modest increase by 4.24 % from the previous year. 2020 and 2021 were difficult times for tourism. We can just state that visitors were not really allowed into Thailand. with few exceptions.

Over the past decade, Thai tourism numbers had increased mainly because of the increase of Chinese and other Asian visitors. As seen in the graph below, most visitors came from East Asia (with China providing the bulk) and the ASEAN countries. Europe has been providing a rather steady number of visitors, while the other continents have more limited number of visitors (though the Indian subcontinent looks promising the last few years).

Regions of Origin of Tourist Visitors to Thailand (2019)

From 2012 onwards, China has been taking the top spot as far as providing tourists to Thailand, now way ahead of Malaysia in second place. As seen below, close to 11 million Chinese visitors arrived in 2019, which was 27.6 % of the total. Chinese visitors stopped coming in 2020 and 2021, and in 2022 we are still waiting for them.

Japan, South Korea, and India provide close to 2 million visitors to Thailand each year. Among the European countries, Russia in the last decade has become most important, with in 2019 close to 1.5 million visitors. You will note that there are a lot of visitors from Laos and Cambodia, in view of the smaller population of these countries. We do not have clear data about how tourists from these countries are counted. It is hardly possible though that almost two million Laotians travel around Thailand, enjoying the sites of Bangkok and Phuket. Likely a lot of border crossings for just a day, and some local business trips are included.

Visitors to Thailand from individual countries around the world. Tourist Arrivals 2019

Changes from 2015 to 2019 :

Arbitrarily we have included some data on the increase (decrease) of visitors from the most important countries to Thailand, between 2015 and 2019. This may maybe allow to see some trends of what may happen in the future.

Procentual Change in number of Visitors to Thailand from most important countries. From 2015 to 2019

For all countries, the increase in visitors was 32.30% in the 4 years between 2015 and 2019. Most Asian countries seem to provide similar increases in visitors. However it is clear that there is a substantial rise in visitors from India, from about 1 million to 2 million visitors, and for local residents, it is clearly visible on Bangkok's streets. As mentioned before, China provides in 2019 close to 11 million visitors. However the last few years, the increase in number of Chinese visitors luckily has not further exploded, and is just a few percentage points above the average increase in visitors.

Russia was also a growing market. This in stark contrast with most other European countries. U.K., Germany and France show only modest increases in visitors to Thailand. The last few years saw also somewhat more American visitors than before.

Interestingly, the number of Australians visiting Thailand has decreased somewhat from 2015 to 2019(-4.63 %), and also the number of visitors from Singapore was not rising anymore (-1.67 %). Sorry, we were not able to put these last two numbers clearly on the chart above.

Thailand welcomes over 7 million foreign tourists from 1 January to 26 October 2022

Heading into the traditional high season of october to march, the full year target for 2022 is 7-10 million visitor arrivals..

Photo of TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 28 October, 2022 – Thailand welcomed over 7 million tourists between 1 January and 26 October, 2022, with the full year target for 2022 being between seven and 10 million visitor arrivals.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), said “With the difficult times of recent now behind us, Thailand is seeing its efforts across the board – from ongoing tourism marketing and promotion, to the Amazing Thailand SHA health and safety standards put in place – paying off, with more than 7 million foreign tourists having already returned to our shores so far in 2022.”

The total number of visitor arrivals for the 1 January-26 October, 2022, period was 7,349,843. The top five source markets were Malaysia with 1,246,242 arrivals, India with 661,751 arrivals, Lao PDR. with 538,789 arrivals, Cambodia with 373,811 arrivals, and Singapore with 365,593 arrivals. Tabulated by the TAT Intelligence Centre based on data from the Immigration Bureau, these totals do not include migrants, United Nations officials, and non-nationalities.

The top five points of entry to Thailand were Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok (3,891,196 arrivals), Phuket International Airport (958,027 arrivals), Don Mueang International Airport (564,008 arrivals), Sadao Border Checkpoint (451,578 arrivals), and Nong Khai Border Checkpoint (225,859 arrivals).

Now having fully reopened to international tourism, Thailand no longer requires tourists to show proof of vaccination or ATK test results, and a longer length of stay is being offered. Effective from 1 October, 2022 to 31 March, 2023, the period of stay is extended to 45 days (from 30 days) for tourists from countries/territories entitled for visa exemption, and to 30 days (from 15 days) for those eligible for a visa on arrival (VOA).

Major international and regional airlines are resuming flights to Thailand from countries around the world, while Thai Airways International (THAI) in its recently announced 2022-2023 winter schedule (30 October, 2022 – 25 March, 2023) is operating flights on 34 European, Australian, and Asian routes with increased frequencies on selected routes.

More international events and local festivals are again being held throughout Thailand, including the popular Loi Krathong annual festival in locations nationwide in the first part of November, and the Bangkok Art Biennale (BAB 2022) which is taking place through until 23 February, 2023, at various locations across Bangkok featuring works by 73 local and international artists.

Also, as the host of APEC 2022, a number of APEC meetings are taking place in Thailand, most recently the APEC Finance Ministers’ Meeting (FMM) from 19-21 October, 2022. Next, the high-profile APEC Economic Leaders’ Week (AELW) is to take place from 14-19 November, 2022.

Mr. Yuthasak said, “Looking ahead, TAT is actively working to ensure Thailand remains a top-of-mind destination for tourists from around the world, such as with the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023: Amazing New Chapters’ campaign.”

Complementing the campaign, the ‘Write Your New Chapter’ TVC was launched to communicate the Amazing New Chapters message and to engage tourists around the world through a cinematic perspective to show them Thailand has a multitude of holiday possibilities in which there is something for all. The aim is to inspire tourists to explore Thailand and create their own chapters, which they can then share with their friends and family and encourage them to also visit.

Thailand is moving towards more sustainable, more responsible and more inclusive tourism in line with the Thai government’s Bio-Circular-Green or BCG Economy Model. The kingdom will continue to be promoted as a world-class destination with existing and new tourism experiences waiting to be discovered by the world’s tourists. This will be showcased alongside NFT products including Nature to keep, Food to explore, and Thainess to discover – which are the main highlighted products in the “Amazing New Chapters” campaign.

Quick Thailand Travel Trends

A speedy look at Thailand’s monthly tourist visiting trends

  • January to February - The Chinese new year is set to attract  30,000 Chinese   visitors and 500,000 international travelers (2023).
  • March & April - 543,000 guests   flew in for The Songkran Festival. Most of them were from China, looking to splash in the traditional Thai new year with plenty of lighthearted water fights (2019).
  • May - Thailand's monsoon season starts, decreasing tourist activity significantly, and some hotels along the coast shut down.
  • June-September - This is Thailand's low season, with heavy trains affecting most day-to-day activities and tour highlights.
  • October-December - As monsoon season wears off, travelers flock to enjoy Thailand's cool breezes and steady weather patterns. The peak season ranges from November to March drawing in visitors to Chiang Mai to celebrate the floating candle festival.

This vs That - Thailand's Tourism Recovery (2019 vs 2022)

Has tourism in Thailand recovered from the pandemic? Yes and no. Tourism was the industry hit hardest during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Thailand went from 40 million tourists in 2019 to just over  11 million   tourists in 2022. Though that's a drastic drop, it’s a rapid improvement, as the previous year saw only 428,000 visitors. Though around  25 million   travelers are expected in 2023, it will take some time before Thailand sees record highs again.

Travel Truth : The Land of Smiles is enchanting, but what are the disadvantages of tourism in Thailand? The  Thailand Development Research Institute   cites coral pollution due to littering from excessive beach parties, environmental strain from over-tourism, and troubling practices within Thailand's controversial sex tourism industry as some of the few pitfalls of the highly successful tourism industry.

Explore Thailand responsibly and avoid adding to the negative side of tourism by hiring a  local private guide   who tailors your itinerary to match your desires while keeping local travel standards at the forefront.

What To Avoid: Red Flags For Travelers

As friendly and accommodating as this nation is, the Thai government has pointed out several  safety gaps   that need attention. Here are some  red flags   you should look out for.

  • Join the Thai nightlife with caution - Though it can be an amazing experience, night touring opens you up to several tourist traps and threats, such as drug/sex trafficking, both of which have serious legal consequences.
  • Large, rowdy crowds - With civil unrest becoming common, it’s best to stay away from large, energetic crowds. A mild skirmish can become violent quickly, especially in political hot zones. Talk to your guide about where to go and where to avoid.
  • The taxi scam - As you leave your hotel, some taxi drivers might offer special tours but instead take you to places where you can purchase items from vendors. Don't get into any vehicle that your tour guide hasn't cleared as legitimate.

Okay, if that last bit overwhelmed you, don’t freak out. You can still have a wholesome Thai adventure without the scary safety concerns and dizzying public transport maze to conquer.

That’s where we come in. GoWithGuide’s selection of local private guides who know the nation’s ins and outs will help you bypass any confusion and avoid annoying travel downers like;

  • Large tour groups
  • Unsafe tour areas
  • A rushed schedule influenced by strangers
  • A heavy language barrier
  • Getting lost at hectic or crowded venues
  • Embarrassing or legally damaging cultural missteps

Thailand’s PM Pushes for Six-Nation Visa for Southeast Asia

Alan Woinski

April 9th, 2024

Thailand’s Prime Minister proposes a six-nation visa to enhance regional tourism, potentially extending visa validity to 90 days, with a target of 80 million foreign tourist arrivals by 2027.

  • LinkedIn icon
  • facebook icon

Thailand’s new Prime Minister is leading a push to establish a revolutionary six-nation visa concept that would allow international tourists the ability to travel seamlessly between Thailand and the fellow Southeast Asian nations of Cambodia , Laos , Malaysia , Myanmar and Vietnam . A six-nation visa is seen as a means of making the region more attractive to international long-haul travelers and would likely see the visa validity period extended from the traditional 30-day period adopted in many countries to a longer 90-day period. The six nations in question welcomed a combined 70 million tourists in 2023 but Thailand is targeting 80 million foreign tourist arrivals to its shores alone by 2027.

In the first quarter of 2024, China was the top contributor to Singapore ’s visitor arrivals, with 723,900 entries. The tally was up 481% year on year and was at 75.4% of 2019’s pre-pandemic first quarter. The Singapore Tourism Board said the Chinese visitors made up 19% of Singapore ’s total of 3.78 million overseas arrivals for the first three months of the year. Total foreign arrivals to Singapore were up 29.7% year on year. The Chinese lead in arrivals coincided with the mutual arrangement for 30-day visa-free travel between the two countries, going into effect February 9.

The four-day period encompassing the Ching Ming Festival resulted in 425,428 tourist arrivals for Macau . The most were on the actual day of the Festival, on April 4th, with 136,363 visitor arrivals. These four days actually had more arrivals than the four-day Easter holiday.

Nepal registered a record-breaking influx of 128,167 tourists in March, a 28.9% increase from March of 2023. The tourist season in Nepal typically starts in February, peaks in March and April, and then gradually decreases. 30,698 tourists arrived from India in March with 12,092 coming from China .

The hotel will cease operations on June 30.

MA is hoping this will help them seed the launch of their MA Accommodation Hotel Fund , an open-ended fund for wholesale investors targeting high quality assets. TFE said they will soon announce new pipeline hotels as they celebrate their twenty-first year of operations. Sister property Vibe Hotel Melbourne is launching a rooftop venue on April 12. The Vibe Hotel Melbourne Docklands will give TFE an additional seven meeting rooms in their Melbourne portfolio.

tourist arrivals in thailand

More than 3.1 million foreign tourists arrived in Thailand in October, an increase of 43.55% over September, said Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob today (Wednesday).

Arrivals by air accounted for 96.36% of all arrivals. 2.2 million (75%) arrived at Suvarnabhumi international airport, followed by 400,000 at Don Mueang Airport.

October 1 st saw Thailand officially enter a post-pandemic period, accompanied by the end of three years of COVID-19 travel restrictions, to which the spike in tourist arrivals is being attributed.

The Thai Immigration Bureau confirmed today that a widely shared image on TikTok, showing a large number of arriving tourists queuing at the immigration checkpoints in Suvarnabhumi airport, is real.

Pol Maj-Gen Cherngron Rimphadee, deputy spokesman for the bureau, said that the image is believed to have been taken during the afternoon of October 30 th , when about 20 flights per hour were arriving, bringing about 4,000 passengers.

He said immigration officials usually take about 45 seconds to process the passports and visas of each passenger.

Meanwhile, Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is pleased that Thailand was voted the “Best Leisure City in Asia-Pacific” for the sixth consecutive time in the Business Traveller Asia-Pacific Awards 2022.

The prime minister thanked all agencies concerned for their efforts to promote tourism and to make Bangkok the best leisure city in the Asia-Pacific region.

Cabinet suspends filing of TM6 cards at 12 checkpoints until Oct 15

Cabinet suspends filing of TM6 cards at 12 checkpoints until Oct 15

The Cabinet resolved on Tuesday to suspend the filing of TM6 arrival/departure cards at 12 land and sea checkpoints, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said.

He said tourists arriving via land or sea at 12 checkpoints, including the Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province, will not be required to file TM6 cards from April 15 to October 15. He added that the suspension of TM6 cards will make it more convenient for foreign tourists to enter the country.

Srettha did not elaborate on the rest of the checkpoints in the country.

The government suspended the filing of TM6 arrival/departure cards in June 2022 for arrivals at airports in a bid to ease congestion.

The TM6 card is a two-part arrival and departure card used to collect information about visitors entering Thailand. The form asks for basic data like name, passport details, flight number, address in Thailand and visa information if applicable.

Maybank scrutinises impact from proposed casino project

Entertainment complexes with gambling venues could generate 187 billion baht in revenue per year, or roughly 1% of Thailand's GDP, with the first complex projected to operate by fiscal 2029, says Maybank Securities.

The unit of Malaysia-based Maybank said the estimates are based on its gaming analyst's forecast and Thailand's tourist arrivals in 2019.

The proposed Thai casino tax rate of 17% is attractive compared with regional peers such as Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines and Macau, which charge a mass market rate varying from 25-40%, said tourism analyst Boonyakorn Amornsank.

The government plans to open entertainment complexes with hotels, malls and casinos. The prime minister said the cabinet is expected to finalise a draft bill for submission to parliament in the coming weeks.

"If approved, we expect the first such complex to open by fiscal 2029, as it will take at least three years for construction after the legislation is approved," Mr Boonyakorn said, noting Singapore's first casino took six years to open from the time it was proposed.

The proposal calls for 5-8 complexes to be constructed in several provinces. The first one could be located in the Eastern Economic Corridor, which offers business incentives to attract foreign direct investment.

The complexes are likely to supply thousands of hotel rooms, which are unlikely to be profitable, in order to attract gamblers, said Mr Boonyakorn. He said tourism should benefit from these complexes, but not in the early stages.

Maybank identified three beneficiary groups: contractors and banks during the construction phase; the property sector as prices rise; and commerce, hotels and airports supported by an uptick in foreign tourists.

Singapore's property prices rose by around 30% year-on-year in 2007 before the first casino opened in 2010, said Mr Boonyakorn.

"Airports of Thailand is likely the biggest beneficiary. Hoteliers with properties near these complexes are unlikely to benefit much from a potential hike in room rates," he said.
