Today Bhadra Fort houses government offices and Kali temple but once upon a time it was the allure and crowning glory of the city of Ahmedabad. For history buffs it is a sight to behold. It was built by Ahmed Shah in 1411. It got its name from the Bhadrakali Temple which is located near it. It was the part of Ahmed Shah’s kingdom who ruled over Gujarat from 1411 till 1442.

The story of Jhulta Minara- Shaking Minarets is very interesting and mysterious. It is said that if one minara is shaken the other one begins to vibrate on its own and nobody till date has been able to decode the engineering of the minarets. Its architecture is quite mysterious and complicated.

There are two minarets, one is located in Sarangpur Darwaja and the other one is located near Kalupur Railway Station. However, the date of the construction of this Vav is very confusing due to the presence of two inscriptions in the walls. One is in Persian and the other is in Sanskrit. The Sanskrit inscription mentions the construction year of this Vav in the year 1499 AD and according to the Persian inscription the year is 1485. The Vav has 7 storeys and the exquisite carvings on the walls, pillars and columns are a great blend of Hindu and Muslim architectural style.

The Arabic and Sanskrit sculptures, the floral motifs in the walls and the beautiful traditional architecture is what makes it one of the top places to visit around Ahmedabad.

Swaminarayan Temple

Swaminarayan Temple is one of the most popular religious sites in Ahmedabad. This magnificent Temple is dedicated to Lord Narnarayanan and it is the first temple of the Swaminarayan sect. The Temple is exquisitely designed and intricately carved in Burmese Teak. There are several brightly colored arches and brackets surrounding the Temple and beautifully adorned galleries and domes. The image of Lord Narayanan in the main hall is made of pure marble while the inner walls and the exterior of the Temple is covered in colorful Gujrati designs depicting the culture and lifestyle of Gujarat. Dada Harir Stepwell

The Dada Harir Stepwell is a marvelous example of refined architecture and masonry of that era. It is one of the most tranquil places to visit in Ahmedabad. Sabarmati Ashram

Located on the banks of the Sabarmati River, this is one of the most popular tourist places in Ahmedabad. Once a residence of Mahatma Gandhi, now it is one of the best Ashrams in Ahmedabad. It has been divided into several sections. The most interesting part is the Museum section where the personal belongings of the Mahatma and several of his letters are on display. The Auto World Vintage Car Museum was established by Shri Pranlal Bhogilal in 1927. He was a vintage car enthusiast himself and converted his own private collection into a museum. Kankaria Lake

Kankaria Lake was earlier known as Hauz-E-Qutub and served as a bathing area for the sultans of that era. Bhadra Fort

Bhadra Fort is an imposing ancient fort located on the eastern banks of the Sabarmati River.  It was built by the founder of the city of Ahmedabad, Sultan Ahmad Shah I in 1411 AD. Over the years many rulers conquered the Fort and in 1817 the British defeated the ruling Marathas and took over the Fort. They turned it into a prison during the entire British Rule in India. The Maratha rulers built a Bhadra Kali Temple in the Fort which in turn gave the Fort its name. The Fort lies on a sprawling ground of about 43 acres and it has an elegant palace, the Bhadra Kali Temple, the Nagina Baug, Teen Darwaza and Ahmad Shah’s mosque. The Fort was mainly built using bright red colored stones and the palace within the Fort has ornate arches and intricate carvings. Today, the Fort is used for several Government offices. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial is a museum dedicated to the memory of Sardar Patel. The structure itself was once a palace built by Shah Jahan, Moti Shahi Mahal. Later, during the British rule it was converted into a cantonment area for them which housed the senior officials of the Company. It was then converted into a Museum in 1978. The Museum features more than 10,000 exhibits of traditional arts as well as the personal belongings and biographies of Sardar Patel. The Museum is also well equipped with the latest technologies like LCD displays, multi-touch tablets and multimedia. Sarkhej Roza

Sarkhej Roza is an elegant architectural complex of tombs, mosques and palaces built around the Sarkhej Pond. It is an important site of Sufi culture and this is where the Sufi Saint, Ganj Baksh resided. After his demise the mausoleum along with the mosque was built in his memory. This is the largest Roza in Gujarat and it is a fine example of Mughal and Indian architectural designs. Besides the tomb of the Sufi Saint, Sarkhej Roza also houses the tombs of the kings and queens of that era. The area around the mosque also has a large courtyard, colonnades and prayer halls. The Sarkhej Roza is a great place for history buffs to visit and learn about the cultural heritage of this place. Teen Darwaza

Teen Darwaza is an amazing structure established by Sultan Ahmad Shah in 141 AD. It is the longest and oldest gateway in Ahmedabad. The three arches of this gateway are intricately carved, the windows are semicircular with the famous Ahmedabad jali works adorning it. Teen Darwaza was the gateway used as an entrance to the Royal square through which the royal procession would pass. The arches are about 25 feet in height and it features Indo-Islamic architecture. One of the most striking features of the Teen Darwaza is the inscription by the Maratha Governor Chimnaji Raghunath. The plague was engraved with the decree that a daughter deserves equal rights on her father’s property. Hutheesing Jain Temple

Hutheesing Jain Temple is an architectural marvel built with white marbles and filled with stunning stone carvings, 238 stone images, shrines of the Tirthankaras and ornate pillars. The Kankaria Zoo was established in 1951 by Reuben David. 7. Bhadra Fort

Legends also say that Goddess Lakshmi appeared and blessed the city to remain wealthy always. Thus, it’s believed that the fort contains hidden treasures.

11. Swaminarayan temple

Swaminarayan Mandir is another in the list of places of pilgrimage in Gujarat. It is dedicated to Lord Nar Narayan, who is worshipped by the Nar Narayan Dev Gadi section of Swaminarayan sect. It is the first temple of this religious group and therefore, is highly revered.

But apart from the religious significance, the temple is also known for its architectural grandeur. It is built using Burmese teak and painted with bright colours prevalent in Gujarati culture. 12. Sarkhej Roza

Sarkhej Roza is a historic complex built around the artificial Sarkhej Lake. It is located in Makarba village, about 7 km from Ahmedabad.

The main attraction is the 105 feet high tomb of Sufi saint Ahmed Khattu Ganj Baksh, in the centre of the complex. He was the spiritual advisor of Ahmed Shah – Ahmedabad’s founder. Other structures in the premises include a small mosque, a palace and the tombs of Mahmud Shah Begada and his queen.

Spread across 34 acres, the architecture of Sarkhej Roza has a mix of Hindu and Islamic style. And the main mausoleum, of the saint, is the biggest Roza in Gujarat. 13. Hutheesing Jain Temple

Situated near the Swaminarayan Temple, Hutheesing Jain Temple is a two-storey structure dedicated to Lord Dharmnath. He was the 15th Jain Tirthankara – a spiritual leader. Built by a prosperous merchant Seth Hutheesing, the temple houses eleven deities. Constructed using white marble, it’s known for its architecture and it stands unwavering on the twelve eloquently adorned stone pillars.

22. Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary

Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is the winter habitat of many migratory birds. It’s recognised as a Ramsar site, for conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. And it’s also one of the largest wetland bird sanctuaries in the country.

The sanctuary is in a low-lying area built around Nal Sarovar Lake. Over 200 bird species inhabit this place during the winters, making it a paradise for bird watchers.

Among the popular birds here are pelicans, flamingos and herons. You can also spot other birds like ducks, geese and spoonbills during your visit. They can be seen flocking together, flying around or feeding on the fish. Apart from the birds, animals like wild asses and blackbucks are also common in the area surrounding the lake.

A visit to Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary also gives you an opportunity for a boat ride in the lake. You can relax in the peaceful and green environment as the boat takes you around the islands.

As you reach the destination island, in the middle of the lake, you can enjoy a full view of the lake from the watchtower. You also get to try a local meal being served in the different village-style food stalls.

This bird sanctuary is best visited during the winter season. But it's among the best places to visit in Ahmedabad during the monsoon too. It’s a great destination for a weekend getaway.

23. Archaeological Museum Lothal

Archaeological Museum Lothal contains the remains of one of the well-planned cities of the Indus Valley Civilization. It has the tools and artefacts found during the excavations.

The museum displays the prominent artefacts which have survived from over 4000 years. The collection consists of painted pottery objects, beads, and toy bullock carts, among other items. Religious symbols and weighing instruments are in the collection of antiquities.

Seals from Bahrain, terracotta figures from Sumeria and various Egyptian objects were also found during the excavation.

The excavation site gives you a glimpse into the premium town planning and well-thought architecture of the time. It shows that the city was divided into two areas. The upper part was meant for the rulers/administrators, and the lower was for the common folks. It also had paved drains, water canals and public baths.

Lothal was popular because of its prevalent trade practices, too. It was a thriving trade centre. And evidence suggests that its beads, gems and other ornaments were sold internationally.

The city also had a dockyard, with berthing facilities for the ships. And warehouses were built to store the cargo that came in. Lothal is the ideal place to visit for those who love to dig into history and know more about different cultures and traditions.

Declared as India's first UNESCO World Heritage City, Ahmedabad or Amdavad is steeped in history and tradition. The old city, also known as the walled area, is characterised by pols (neighbourhoods), which are an ancient system of community-based housing. A 10-km-long wall with 12 gates, 189 bastions and over 6,000 battlements had once guarded the old city. Today, all that remains of this are the gates, each standing proudly with intricate carvings, calligraphy and some with extended balconies. While the eastern section boasts an old-world charm with ancient gates and colonial-era buildings dotting its landscape, the western region is marked by educational institutions, multiplexes and business districts.

Ahmedabad was earlier known as Karnavati and the name was changed by Sultan Ahmed Shah, of the Muzaffarid dynasty, after 1411, when he conquered it from king Karandev I. Under Ahmed Shah, architects amalgamated Hindu craftsmanship with Persian architecture, giving rise to a unique Indo-Saracenic style. Many of the mosques here reflect this style. While Ahmedabad served as Gujarat's capital from 1960 to 1970 (today the state capital is its twin city, Gandhinagar), it still houses the Gujarat High Court and is the state's financial centre. The city was also at the heart of India's struggle for independence from the British rule, with Mahatma Gandhi residing at Sabarmati Ashram here. It is also called the 'Manchester of East' for its thriving textile industry that has led Ahmedabad into the 21st century. The city is known for its grandeur and larger-than-life celebrations during Navratri, which is an open-air cultural and spiritual extravaganza.

5. Calico Museum of Textile

6. Kankaria Zoo

9. Sidi Saiyyed Mosque

The structure was built in the Hindu Solanki architectural style and is octagonal from top. The well is one of the best examples of the Persian-Muslim influenced architecture mixed with the Hindu architecture with its carvings, sculptures and the inscriptions that depict the story of its origin.

4. Akshardham Temple

One of the largest Hindu temples in the world, Akshardham Temple was built in 1992 and is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan. The complex is spread around a massive area of 23 acres and serves as a center for devotion, arts, education and displays a marvelous modern Indian architecture. Everyone is looking to leave the country this summer.

Delta Air Lines has released its second annual list of the most-searched summer travel destinations for 2024 — and the most in-demand spots are international.

According to Delta search data in the US from Nov. 1, 2023, to March 18, 2024, for travel between May and August 2024, the top 10 list had numerous unsurprising tourist destinations — but also some more unique spots topping the chart.

London, Paris and Rome are the always-popular destinations that topped the list again this year, while Dublin, Barcelona and Vancouver, Canada, were newly in demand.

Searches for all of the top 10 international destinations increased more than 150% from 2023 — but one stood out more than the rest.

Athens, Greece, had the biggest surge in interest, with a whopping 248% increase in searches compared to last year.

Though the Greek city still came in at fourth place overall, it had a significantly higher surge than all the other destinations compared to 2023.

Here is the full list of Delta’s 2024 most-searched summer destinations:

Meanwhile, when it comes to domestic travel, the most-searched destinations — with the exception of Delta Hubs — included Las Vegas, Orlando, Miami and Honolulu, which Delta suggests is due to an interest in “sun-drenched getaways” and major summer sporting events.

Forget the beach: How you can experience the real Maldives

I was on a boat in the middle of the Indian Ocean, about to taste real life in the Maldives .

A crew of fishermen from Sun Siyam Iru Veli , located in the Dhaalu Atoll, set up the fishing lines. We were anchored off the shores of the nearby local island Bandidhoo, where people fish tuna for money and smaller reef fish for their tables. 

The task seemed simple enough: bait attached to a hook tied to the end of a fishing line, which I was to hold by hand. As the line dropped to the reef, I was to wait for the feel of a fish nibbling on the bait. Then I’d just pull the line by hand, and voilà: a catch. No poles or spears required. 

Long-line fishing is a generations-old tradition in the Maldives, a way of life for its people. Living in an island nation where not much grows, Maldivians sustain themselves off of fish and coconuts. Not only is it an ancient practice, but long-line fishing is sustainable, taking just a few fish at a time with minimal damage to coral reefs or bycatch. 

I quickly learned that I was not a natural long-line fisher. For the next hour, I mistook the moving current for a gullible fish when I was actually the gullible one. Other times, the fish was stealthy enough to take the bait without me feeling anything at all.

Instead, I watched the fishermen work their magic. The line danced in their hands, flying up and down. Sensitive to the slightest movement going on 65 feet underwater, they knew the exact moment to start pulling the line up and win the battle against the fish. 

As the sun set over the water, we caught a total of nine fish, including emperor fish, batfish and humpback snapper. 

Although the rest of the fish went to the fishermen to enjoy at home, one snapper would make a reappearance the following day. For lunch, I enjoyed the red snapper, grilled to perfection and sliced raw into sashimi. 

While the Maldives is renowned as a romantic, luxurious destination where people can enjoy the sunshine, soft white sand and gentle lapping turquoise waters, it’s also packed with history and culture. While everyone should spend some time relaxing at the beach , the atoll nation offers way more for travelers to do – and learn more about life in the Maldives. 

Like most things in the Maldives, most activities are unfortunately pricey, especially since booking through a resort is pretty much your only option.

Long-line fishing is just the beginning. Here are eight other activities in the Maldives beyond simply lounging on the beach.

Go fish, Maldivian-style

Sunset fishing was hands-down my favorite excursion in the Maldives. Watching the fishermen in action was exhilarating, even though I couldn’t get the long line fishing down myself. Partaking in the ancient fishing tradition was a peek into real Maldivian life – and against the most gorgeous of backdrops: the sun setting over the ocean. To pick which fish to eat the next day and how it would be prepared made the experience extra rewarding.  

Check out the marine life

The Maldives is rich in marine biodiversity. Guests can snorkel and dive with whale sharks in southern waters and alongside manta rays in the north. At Sun Siyam Iru Veli, I went on an afternoon snorkeling tour, a 20-minute boat ride from the resort, and swam along the reef, an uninhabited island. Dropping about 100 feet, the reef was overflowing with marine life. I spotted a plethora of tropical reef fish along with three Hawksbill turtles – the most common type in the Maldives – and a white-tip reef shark. 

Even on resort grounds, travelers have plenty of opportunities to easily witness marine life – I spotted a pod of dolphins swim past me on my sunset fishing excursion and baby reef sharks around the shoreline by my villa at Sun Siyam Iru Veli in the mornings.

Explore the ocean … at night

Most resorts in the Maldives also have a house reef, where colorful clownfish and triggerfish swim around anemones and soft coral. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi , guests can request a nighttime snorkeling activity, where they dive in after the sun sets to see the reef in another light, literally. 

The gear was simple. I slipped an orange filter over my snorkel mask, secured with a band, to eliminate the fluorescence caused by my blue light flashlight. This light source would make all the difference, as the soft coral and anemones absorbed the blue light, casting neon greens and reds back. The bright red anemones swayed in the dark and soft coral glowed, showcasing intricate brain-like textures and patterns not noticeable in daylight. 

Help restore some coral

Coral reefs play a critical role in the very existence of the Maldives; without them, the islands would be damaged by strong waves. Maldivians also rely on the fish from reefs for their livelihoods. Guests can participate in coral restoration alongside on-staff marine biologists at multiple Sun Siyam Resorts with coral planting. In this activity, I fastened coral fragments to a metal frame that’s later placed in the ocean to hopefully regrow and thrive. 

Visit a local island 

Sun Siyam Resorts offers travelers the chance to get off the resort island and witness everyday life for Maldivians. Guests can sign up for a local island tour, which takes them to a local fishing village to meet community members and see the school and local shops. I went on a local farm tour, where I got to see how some of the produce, such as papaya, that’s served in the resorts are grown. 

Watersports galore

In the Maldives, the ocean is the main attraction. Siyam World Maldives way offers more than the typical jet skis, paddleboards and kayaks. Guests of all ages can clamber around on the Indian Ocean’s biggest floating waterpark, made up of inflatable obstacles. There are also electric surfboards, kite surfing, banana boats and underwater jetpacks. I rented a seabob, a diving scooter that let me glide up and down underwater like a dolphin at up to 13 miles per hour. It was a strange sensation, but definitely took snorkeling to the next level. 

Visit an uninhabited private island

Over 83% of the Maldives’ 1,192 islands are uninhabited, allowing travelers to bask in unspoiled tropical landscapes. At Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, I was able to enjoy untouched nature and be the only present human there. Sun Siyam Iru Fushi and its sister resort, Siyam World, also share a small private island where only palm trees exist (and a restroom facility, so don’t worry about that). Guests can book the private island for picnics and photoshoots, which willand it’ll be exclusively theirs for the entire time. During the picnic, staff set up a tent for respite from the afternoon sun and served lunch and even champagne. No roughing it here.

Every Friday night at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, Maldivian staff share a piece of their culture with guests through traditional song and dance – of course, guests are invited to learn the dance, too. In Boduberu , dancers move energetically to the beat of coconut drums and folk singing. The dancing style is said to have come from African sailors who reached the Maldives many centuries ago, and is typically performed at special occasions and celebrations. The resort also offers cooking classes, where guests can learn how to make traditional Maldivian dishes, and free workshops such as making your own coconut oil, a staple product for cooking in the country.

This Is the No. 1 Surf Destination in the World

The World Surf League's championship tour is well underway, bringing the best professional surfers to places like Australia, Brazil, southern California, and beyond to paddle and battle it out on some of the best breaks on Earth. And while you probably won't be getting out into the lineup with Kelly Slater, Carissa Moore, Griffin Colapinto, Tatiana Weston-Webb, or Gabriel Medina any time soon, they at least may have inspired you to want to go out and surf on your own. And the travel insurance experts at Confused.com have a few suggestions on where you should go. 

The website released its list of the best surf destinations in the world, a study based on wave quality and surfer satisfaction via data from Surf-Forecast , and overall search interest via Google search data. After digging into all the numbers, the team named Hossegor, located along the southwest coast of France, the best destination to surf. 

"Hossegor ranks as the best destination for surfing in the world, with an overall score of 8.16/10. Hossegor offers reliable, excellent conditions for surfing and is known for its hollow and fast-breaking waves favored by experienced surfers. It has an average surfer rating of 4.25, and 48 percent of the recorded waves are clean and surfable." The team also noted in the results that the best time to visit is during the region's fall shoulder season in October when flights and hotels are at their cheapest. 

Hossegor was joined on the list by the legendary Mavericks, located just outside of Half Moon Bay, California, in second place, followed by Tofino, Canada, known for its year-round surf and fantastic wildlife spotting (seriously, watch out for whales here). 

Rounding out the top 10 spots are The Bubble in the Canary Islands; Biarritz in France; Cloudbreak on Tavarua Island in Fiji; Carrapateira in Portugal; Ponta Preta in Maio, Cape Verde; Uluwatu and Kuta in Bali, Indonesia; Pasta Point in the Maldives; Puerto Escondido, in southern Oaxaca, Mexico; and Byron Bay in New South Wales, Australia. 

While yes, this list is fantastic, it's chock full of spots that would easily be rated as expert-only. (Seriously, please do not paddle out to places like Mavericks or Cloud Break unless you really know what you're doing.) So we thought we'd give you three more suggestions for places to go surf if you consider yourself more of a beginner or beginner-intermediate, and asked our friends at The Inertia for their input. Here's what they (and we) suggest. 

Waikiki, Hawaii

If you're going to learn to surf, you might as well do it in the birthplace of the sport — Hawaii. Waikiki is a prime destination, as it often offers soft, rolling waves in beautiful azure waters. Plenty of schools are ready to teach you all the ins and outs, including Kahu , which says 95 percent of its students stand up with one lesson. And, as a bonus, you can drive over to Pipeline and see the pros surf on some of the most pristine waves on Earth. 

Nosara, Costa Rica

The tiny town of Nosara has become an ultra-popular destination for beach-goers, and for good reason. Not only is it stunning, but it also offers plenty of coastline for those who want to surf. Both Nosara Surf School and Nosara Surf Academy are great options and offer lessons for beginners, intermediates, and those looking to take things to the advanced level. 

Cocoa Beach, Florida

Florida may not be the first place that comes to mind for surfing, but you absolutely should not overlook Cocoa Beach if you want to paddle out. Not only does it offer smooth waves, but it's also the hometown of surfing's greatest athlete, Kelly Slater. So really, you'll be surfing in the shadow of greats. Make a reservation with Cocoa Beach Surf School and get out in the water ASAP. 

Popular global destinations which are trying to limit tourism numbers

Tourists can expect a future where visiting world hotspots will come with extra charges or further restrictions - with many places already taking steps depending on the pressures faced by their communities.

Growing tourism numbers are placing popular destinations under extra pressure - due to various factors including environmental and residential concerns.

Here are some locations limiting tourists - or which could be about to take action.

Venice, Italy

A controversial scheme has been introduced for day trippers in Venice in an attempt to reduce the number of tourists.

Signs inform visitors there is a new €5 fee (£4.28) to be paid as part of a trial phase during peak periods of the summer.

Around 200 stewards have been trained to politely walk anyone unaware of the charge through the process of downloading a QR code - with a kiosk set up for people not in possession of a smartphone.

The charge will not apply to hotel guests.

The city has an estimated 30 million visits from tourists every year.

Canary Islands, Spain

Officials are considering introducing stricter rules over tourism amid simmering anger among the locals who are worried about increasing visitor numbers.

Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo said this month that although the region was a leading Spanish tourist destination, more controls were needed.

Just over a week ago, thousands of people protested in Tenerife, calling for the Spanish island to temporarily limit tourist arrivals.

They want to dampen a boom in short-term holiday rentals and hotel construction which is driving up housing costs for locals.

One of the leaders of the protest, Antonio Bullon, said: "The authorities must immediately stop this corrupt and destructive model that depletes the resources and makes the economy more precarious."

Haiku Stairs, Hawaii

Demolition of a mountain staircase which was built during World War Two on the Hawaiian island of Oahu was due to start this month - to prevent tourists from using it.

Hikers have long headed to the site, despite being officially closed to visitors since 1987, as part of efforts to access amazing views of the island.

Officials confirmed earlier this month the Haiku Stairs would be removed as part of an operation which will cost $2.5m (£2m).

They later said they were "disappointed and dismayed" visitors were still trying to reach the site despite their "warnings that the project to dismantle" the stairs had begun.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Access to one of the world's most popular heritage sites was temporarily closed to tourists last September.

Authorities took the decision amid growing concern over the deterioration of the site due to increasing footfall.

The site was built in the 15th century as a religious sanctuary for the Incas.

Maya Bay, Thailand

One of Thailand's most popular beauty spots was closed to tourists for four years from 2018 - after it was made famous by a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh island featured in the 2000 thriller The Beach - but increasing visitor numbers eventually forced officials to take action "to allow its ecology to fully recover".

Authorities decided to step in following reports that up to 80% of the coral in the bay had died.

Mount Fuji, Japan

Officials said a barrier will begin to be installed this week to block views of Mount Fuji in an effort to tackle growing tourism numbers.

The nation's highest mountain attracts many photographers and selfie-lovers.

But the authorities in the resort of Fujikawaguchiko said netting measuring 20 metres will be used to obstruct the view at one popular point.

Officials said they were taking action due to the bad behaviour of tourists.

Cornwall, UK

Visitors may be charged a tax to visit the area, the county's tourism chief has said.

Visit Cornwall's chief executive Malcolm Bell said "it is time to have the debate" about charging tourists a fee.

But he also said such a move would have to be made together with neighbouring areas, reported Cornwall Live.

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

Lyon and St.-Étienne

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.
