Gornergrat Railway: A Complete Guide To Seeing the Matterhorn By Train

Robert Marmion

The Gornergrat Railway is the train in Switzerland that will take you to see the Matterhorn. Starting in Zermatt, Switzerland, this cogwheel railway will take you up to 3,100 meters and a perfect panoramic view of the Matterhorn and it’s surroundings.

Details of the Gornergrat Bahn

The Gornergrat Railway is a relatively short ride at only 33 minutes. You’ll have near constant views of the Matterhorn as you ascend the line. The best views of the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat train are on the right side of the train going up the mountain.

Gornergrat Railway

The Gornergrat Railway is open 365 days a year and the train runs from early morning until after sunset. The train will be closed if there is bad weather or really strong winds.

The busiest time on the Gornergrat railway is between 9:30 and 11:30 am.

Unlike the Jungfrau Bahn, there is no railway that goes inside the Matterhorn or to the top of the Matterhorn. The Gornergrat Bahn is the closest railway to the Matterhorn and will give you spectacular views of it and the surrounding area.

How Much Does The Gornergrat Railway Cost

Round trip ticket prices on the Gornergrat Railway are CHF 126 in summer and CHF 88 in low season. If you have purchased the Swiss travel pass, which is recommended, the tickets will be half price. Tickets can be purchased online or when you get to the station. If you would like someone else to handle all of your train and vacation bookings in Europe, contact Rail Bookers (affiliate).

We recommend waiting until you get to the station if you are visiting in winter, as bad weather could change your plans in this region. On our most recent trip, a snow storm with strong winds closed the train when we were planning to ride it.

How to Guarantee the best view of the Matterhorn

If you are visiting during high season and want to guarantee yourself the best view of the Matterhorn, purchase a priority boarding ticket. A Gornergrat Railway priority boarding ticket will allow you to get on the train 3 minutes earlier than other passengers so you can get a seat on the right side of the train.

Priority boarding tickets cost 10 CHF in the morning and 5 CHF in the afternoon, with children under 6 being free. This is a cheap way to ensure a great view and is recommended if seeing the Matterhorn on the way up is a must for you.

You can purchase the priority boarding ticket online .

Where to stay when visiting the Matterhorn

You’ll depart on the Gornergrat Railway from Zermatt, Switzerland. The easiest place to stay when visiting the Matterhorn is in downtown Zermatt. From Zermatt you can simply walk to the station whenever you want and board the train.

Zermatt Switzerland

You might find the hotel prices in Zermatt to be quite high during your visit. It is an incredibly popular upscale ski resort town and weekends and holidays drive the prices up more than most cities.

If prices are high during your visit, a good alternative to staying in Zermatt is staying in the neighboring town of Tasch, Switzerland. We’ve stayed at the Hotel Elite Tasch and loved our room and the hotel. Prices were half of the price we would have paid in Zermatt, but it still cost us $130 per night.

Tasch Station

There is a grocery store in Tasch, where you can buy food to make lunch or dinner, which will save you time and money.

From Tasch you can easily take the Zermatt Shuttle train, which takes you directly to the Zermatt Station. The Zermatt Shuttle train is included with your Swiss Travel Pass if you have it.

Zermatt is a car free town, so if you are driving, you’ll only be able to drive as far as Tasch, and then take the Zermatt Shuttle from there.

Zermatt Shuttle

Zermatt Shuttle trains leave about every 20 minutes from the Tasch station.

Zermatt Shuttle

Getting to the Train

To find the Gornergrat Station in Zermatt you’ll walk off the platform of the Zermatt Shuttle, turn left and cross the street, where the station for the Gornergrat Train is located on the left. The Gornergrat Bahn train leaves from the yellow building across the street from the main train station in Zermatt. There are signs pointing you towards the Gornergrat Bahn station once you exit the Zermatt station.

How much time do you need to see the Matterhorn

We recommend staying in the area for 2 nights, but 3 would be even better and give you the ability to change plans in case of bad weather. For this reason we think Tasch is the best home base, as it offers better pricing and allows for a longer stay.

If you try to visit Zermatt in one night you’ll have a few potential problems, but it is possible.

Riding the Gornergrat Railway and the Glacier Express

Most people that ride the Glacier Express to or from Zermatt like to pair the experience with a ride on the Gornergrat, which makes sense as the stations are right across the street from each other.

If you ride the Glacier Express into Zermatt, you could stay the night in Tasch or Zermatt and then ride the Gornergrat the next day after you wake up.

Zermatt Station and Gornergrat Railway Station

If you are riding the Glacier Express from Zermatt, you’ll need to get in early enough the day before to check into your hotel and store your bags, before riding the Gornergat that afternoon. Then simply wake up the next day and board the Glacier Express.

We’ve done it this way with success in the past, as we arrived in Tasch at 1pm and checked into the Hotel Elite Tasch and were to the Gornergrat Train by 1:30pm. That gave us the rest of the night to explore before boarding the Glacier Express in the morning. We took a chance since it was off season, and they did let us check in early, which was incredible.

Which time of year is best for the Gornergrat Train

The prettiest time of year to ride the Gornergrat and see the Matterhorn is February. In this late winter timeframe you’ll have a snow covered landscape and the views will be amazing. If you don’t like the cold weather, summer is also a great time to see the Matterhorn. Your views will be different, and you won’t see as much snow, but the contrast with the green landscape will be very pretty.

The Glacier Express carries guests in comfortable panorama cars through the most beautiful areas of the Alps. From St. Moritz to Zermatt. During this journey, it crosses 291 bridges and goes through 91 tunnels.

train journeys from zermatt

In Switzerland, a country in love with its railways, the Glacier Express is the most popular and attractive of her trains. The slowest express train in the world travels over 291 km of tracks and 291 bridges while going through 91 tunnels and climbing to the top of the Oberalp Pass at 2,033 m. The trip is an eight-hour experience with one highlight leading to the next. Just after leaving St. Moritz, the composition travels through the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abula on the Rhätische Bahn tracks. Here one can see and experience the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct and the spiral tunnel between Preda and Bergün.

White, Blue, Green

Travellers on the Glacier Express cannot put away their cameras for a moment, because the attractions line up like a strand of pearls: mountain forests, alpine meadows, mountain brooks and streams, the arches of the Landwasser Viaduct, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abula, the Rhine Gorge with its jagged landscape, the Oberalp Pass (2,033 m) with its mountain lake, glaciers and peaks, and on and on. After Visp, the Glacier Express passes through the deepest cleft valley in Switzerland, the Nikolai Valley. And the finale: arrival at Zermatt, the Matterhorn village.

Summer = 4 May to 12 October 2024.

Winter = 10 December 2023 to 3 May 2024.

There is no Glacier Express service at all from 16 October to 9 December 2023 or from 13 October to 6 December 2024.

*  Trains 920 & 923 run from 16 December 2023 to 07 January 2024 and from 3 February to 3 May 2024.

f = To/from Davos, change trains at Filisur, using the hourly branch line train between Filisur & Davos.

How much does it cost?

You buy a normal ticket or Saver Day Pass or can use an Interrail pass, Eurail Pass or Swiss Travel Pass .  You then pay the Glacier Express reservation fee on top.

Children under 6 go free without their own seat.  Children aged 6 to 16 pay half fare but must pay the adult reservation fee.

How to buy tickets

First some explanation .  Listen up, I'm going to save you some money...

You need two things to travel on the Glacier Express:  (1) A seat reservation which secures your place on the train and (2) any sort of ticket for the class you've reserved.

The ticket can be a regular point-to-point train ticket or it can be a Saver Day Pass , Swiss Travel Pass or Interrail or Eurail pass.

I recommend buying the seat reservation first, then buying the ticket separately.

Why?  Because the Glacier Express website only sells expensive full-flex standard-fare tickets, even when a much cheaper Saver Day Pass is available and covers the whole Glacier Express route.  Wouldn't you rather pay CHF 52 for a Saver Day Pass than CHF 152 for a full-price ticket?  See the fares above .  So buy a Glacier Express reservation (only the reservation!) in whatever class you want using the Glacier Express website, then buy a Saver Day Pass for the relevant class at a website that sells those.  It's not rocket science!

Step 1, make a seat reservation .

Reservations open 93 days ahead.

Go to the official Glacier Express website, www.glacierexpress.ch and run an enquiry for your journey.

Select Classic Glacier Express for normal 1st & 2nd class, or select Excellence class .

If you're booking between 93 & 60 days ahead, it may warn you that it can only sell a reservation at this time, which is what you want anyway.

Select the train you want, then select seats from the seat map.  Do not worry about the price it shows at this stage.

You can't tell which seats face forward or which side of the train they'll be, because the system has no idea which way round the carriage will run.  I recommend that a couple book face-to-face window seats, a family books 4 seats around a table.

Now the science bit:  On the page where you enter your personal details, change the Reservation drop-down box to Reservation only .

You should see the price drop to the cost of a Glacier Express seat reservation, see the fares section above .

Go ahead and buy the reservation, you are then safely booked on the Glacier Express!

In principle, you could now simply buy a full-price standard ticket at the station 10 minutes before the train goes, full-price standard tickets have unlimited availability and cannot sell out.  But it's a lot cheaper to buy a ticket in advance, as per step 2...

Step 2, buy a ticket .

If you have a Swiss Travel Pass , Interrail or Eurail pass, you already have a ticket so no further action is necessary.  If you don't have such a pass, here's how to buy a ticket:

Tickets go on sale 60 days ahead.  You can't buy before sales open.

Go to Omio.com and run an enquiry for the journey you wish to make, for example St Moritz to Zermatt.

Find your train and select it.  Look for a train with 0 changes, just remember there is more than one Glacier Express a day in summer - although as Saver Day Passes are good for any train, it doesn't matter if you pick the wrong one.

If a Saver Day Pass is available it will be offered, usually as the cheapest option.  Select it in the class you want, which must (obviously!) be for whichever class of seat you've reserved.

Go ahead and buy it.  You can print it out or show it on your phone.

A Saver Day Pass gives unlimited travel all day all over Switzerland on most main train routes including the MGB & RhB who run the Glacier Express, and the mainline SBB & BLS routes.  The price varies depending how far ahead you buy it and how popular that day is.  Read about Saver Day Passes here .

Omio.com is really easy to use, it adds a small booking fee and I get a little commission if you book this way.  Alternatively, you can buy tickets (including Saver Day Passes) with no booking fee at www.sbb.ch but it's a little more fiddly and may default to a 50% Half Fare Card discount which you need to be sure to remove before buying.

If you've an Interrail, Eurail or Swiss Travel Pass

Interrail & Eurail passes cover the Rhätische Bahn (RhB) and the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) so cover the whole Glacier Express route.  Until 2017, Eurail & Interrail gave free travel on the RhB part of the trip, but only a discount on MGB.  They now give free travel on both.

So all you need is a Glacier Express seat reservation, see the reservation prices above .  You can even travel in Excellence class if you have a 1st class pass and make an Excellence class reservation.

To make a reservation , follow step 1 in the How to buy tickets section above .  You do not need to follow step 2 if you have a pass.

Holidays & tours on the Glacier Express

Railbookers :  For a custom-made trip on the Glacier Express with trains, transfer & hotels arranged for you as a package, call Railbookers.  Tell them what you want, and they'll advise you on the best trains, routes & hotels.  They get great reviews and take good care of their guests.

Check out two of their top sellers:  8-day Switzerland's Lakes & Mountains tour (link to their UK site) or Swiss Lakes & Mountains tour (link to their US & Canada site) which includes both Glacier Express & Bernina Express trains, and their shorter 5-day Classic Bernina Express & Glacier Express tour (link to their UK site) or Classic Bernina Express & Glacier Express tour (link to their US & Canada site) which also combine these two classic Alpine routes.

UK flag

Tailor Made Rail can also organise a trip to Switzerland by train, with hotels and transfers arranged as a package. Call their dedicated seat61 phone line 020 3778 1461 and quote seat 61 when booking.  From outside the UK call +44 20 3778 1461.  Lines open 09:00-17:30 Monday-Friday.  Their website is www.tailormaderail.com/trains/glacier-express-holidays .

Escorted tours:   If you'd prefer to go to Switzerland to travel on the famous Glacier Express on an escorted tour with a convivial group of travellers rather than travelling solo, here are the two UK companies which arrange escorted tours by train from the UK to destinations all over Europe on various dates through the year, including popular trips taking in the Glacier Express and equally famous Bernina Express .  Both companies are part of the same group.

What's it like on the Glacier Express?

The Glacier Express uses modern panoramic coaches specially built in 2006.  It's a pleasure to travel on, clean, comfortable, carpeted and air-conditioned, its most distinctive features are the huge panoramic side windows and glass skylights as well, so you don't miss any of the scenery.

In 1st class cars seats are 2+1 across the car width, with bays of 4 seats around a table on one side of the aisle and bays of 2 seats across a table on the other.  In 2nd class, seats are arranged 2+2 across the car width, with bays of 4 around a table on each side of the aisle.  Apart from more space and fewer passengers per coach, seats are similar and there is little to choose between 1st & 2nd.  Both are excellent and on-board service is exactly the same.  However, for couples a face-to-face table for two is a good reason for going 1st class.  See Glacier Express seat map .

Both classes have power sockets and free WiFi.  You'll get a free printed route guide with an explanation of the key sights and route map.  There are free headphones which you can plug in to listen to the commentary.  Video screens at the end of the car show the train's location and other information.

There is a bar car, but no need to visit it.  Staff come down the train taking orders for tea, coffee, alcoholic and soft drinks & snacks, also for a 2, 3 or 4 course lunch.  You can pre-book lunch, served at your seat on real china with proper cutlery, with a choice of starters, main courses and desserts, accompanied by a good selection of wines.  You can find sample menus & wine list at www.glacierexpress.ch under Travel planning then Gastronomy . Or feel free to bring your own picnic and bottle of wine.

Lunch served at your seat in 1st or 2nd class.  A 2, 3 or 4-course lunch can be ordered and paid for in advance when you reserve, or you can order and pay for it on the day.

Excellence class

Since 2019 there's a premium option called Excellence class,  only available on trains 902 & 903/923.  It's become incredibly popular and gets booked up fast.

Excellence class consists of one deluxe panoramic car with seats arranged 1+1 across the car width, face-to-face tables for two on both sides of the aisle, so everyone gets a window seat.  There's a cocktail bar at one end of the car for Excellence class passengers.  A 5-course regional menu with wine is included in the reservation fee, as is complimentary coffee, juice, snacks & champagne.  A dedicated Excellence class host travels with the car.  See the 360º photo of Excellence class here ( please let me know if this link stops working).

To travel in Excellence class you need a first class ticket (or 1st class Interrail , Eurail , Saver Day Pass or Swiss Travel Pass ) then you pay the Excellence class reservation fee.  You can make the reservation at www.glacierexpress.ch and print it out, but I recommend buying a Saver Day Pass separately rather than paying for a full-price ticket, see the prices and advice on tickets above .

Traveller James Morris reports:   "Excellence Class is brilliant.  A professional concierge service helps you with your bags and shows you to your seat.  They are friendly and chatty, nothing is too much trouble.  They are clued up on the food and drink they serve and explain it all to you. They wear white gloves when serving, and know how to open and pour champagne.  I had iced tea all trip with spring water and herbs, best iced tea ever.  I was never without a drink in front of me all trip.  They refill glasses or get you a new bottle of water without a second thought.  For those that do drink.  It was champagne to start, followed by a different wine for each course of the meal. They served a full 7 course meal, amazing food.  The seats are very comfortable with good recline, and full lumbar adjustment.  A shelf by the side of your seat has easy to reach sockets & USB charger.  An IPad was provided to help you follow the journey.  A Glacier Express tilting glass was given as a souvenir at the end of the trip, along with Excellence class branded chewing gum or hand cream.  On arrival, you are told to just leave the train, someone comes on board to carry your bags off. It exceeded my expectations, which isn't bad considering the price.  Definitely a must do if you can afford it."

Travel tips & FAQ

What time of year is best?

You can go almost any time, as the Glacier Express runs all year round apart from a short break from Late October to mid-December when the MGB does annual track maintenance on the Brig-Zermatt line, see the timetable above .  Indeed, you really need to do it twice, once as a summer jaunt through sunny green Swiss meadows and again through a snowy wonderland in the depths of winter.  They are two different experiences!  You can still go in the October-December period when there's no Glacier Express, using local trains on the same route, with a change of train or two somewhere, use www.sbb.ch to find times.

Is eastbound or westbound better?

It makes little difference, either is fine, scenery is the same in either direction and all the trains do the whole run in daylight even in winter.  Arguably, Zermatt is the nicer destination to end up in for a short stay.

Should you go first or second class?

The scenery is exactly the same whether you choose 1st or 2nd class and the on board service is the same, too.  The only difference is the seating arrangement, see the photos above .  As you can see, 2nd class seats are arranged 2+2 across the car width, 1st class seats 2+1, so 1st class seats offer more elbow room and fewer passengers per car.  It also means that there are tables-for-two on one side of the aisle, which are nicer for couples than sharing a 4-seater section in 2nd class.  But there's no difference in on-board service, all you're paying for is the lower-density seating.  2nd class is absolutely fine.

Which side of the train to sit?

Eastbound from Zermatt, the right-hand side is best along the Mattertal Valley from Zermatt to Brig, but in the Rhine Gorge, all the river scenery is on the left.  The train changes direction in Chur.  Then from Chur to St Moritz the best views are on the right hand side, including the classic view as the train curves onto the Landwasser Viaduct .  Westbound from St Moritz, it's obviously the opposite side in each case.  However, when booking you can't tell which way round the carriages will be, so unfortunately you can't reserve a seat on a specific side.

Opening windows for photography or video

The panoramic windows are great for viewing, but the double glazing isn't great for reflection-free photography.  There are two solutions:  In each passenger car, the droplights in the entrance doors open:  Pinch together the two small knobs at the top of the window to lower it.  In the bar car, one large window on each side pulls right down, quite a few passengers gather in there to photograph key sights such as the Landwasser Viaduct!  Obviously, don't lean out, just point your camera through the open window, staff won't usually mind if you're careful.

Luggage on the Glacier Express

Like any other European train, you take your luggage onto the train with you and put it on the luggage racks.  Within reason you can take whatever you like, suitcases, backpacks, whatever, as long as you can carry it yourself.  There are large luggage racks in each car, just inside the seating area, see the photos below.  You can also put bags between the seat backs.

Food on the Glacier Express

There's a bar car in the centre of the train selling tea, coffee, snacks and souvenirs.  But you don't need to visit it.  In 1st & 2nd class, staff come down the train at regular intervals taking orders for food and drink, and a 2, 3 or 4-course lunch can be served at your seat at extra cost.  You settle up at the end of the journey.  Or you're free to bring your own picnic and even wine on board, as on other European trains.

Furka Tunnel :  After Andermatt the Glacier Express passes through the 15.4 km Furka Tunnel, opened in 1982.  You may see cars & lorries on transporter wagons being shuttled through the tunnel, especially in winter when the pass over the top is closed.  Year-round service on the railway was only possible when the tunnel opened.  Incidentally, the train is named after the Rhône Glacier on the Furka Pass which is no longer visible from the train since the tunnel opened, although you may see other glaciers high in the mountains at points along the train's route.

Take a winter trip.

The Glacier Express runs all year round apart from a few weeks break from mid-October to early December.  The journey through winter snow is a completely different experience from the same journey past summer meadows.  So you really need to do it twice!  The train is less busy in winter, so it's easier to get seats, too.  Photo below courtesy of David Saville.

A brief history of the Glacier Express

After the first world war, Switzerland steadily gained popularity as a winter and summer holiday destination for those who could afford it.  Railways grew up to support this tourism, and through services on he metre-gauge line between Brig, Chur and St Moritz started in 1926.  But it was in June 1930 that the first Zermatt to St Moritz 'Glacier Express' started running, initially summer only, and run jointly by the BVZ (Brig-Visp-Zermattbahn), FOB (Furka Oberalp Bahn) and RhB (Rhätische Bahn).  It could not run all year because of the impossibility of keeping the line over the Oberalp pass open in winter.  Construction of the Furka base tunnel started in 1973, and at long last in 1982 all-year operation was inaugurated between Zermatt and St Moritz.  BVZ and FOB merged in 2003 to form the MGB (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn).  The Glacier Express has been progressively developed as a premier tourist attraction in its own right, and rightly so, though it continues to form an integral part of the Swiss transport network.  More info at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glacier_Express .

The Glacier Express has its own website, www.glacierexpress.ch , where you can check up to date times & fares, and the current menu.

Hotels in Zermatt

The Monte Rosa Hotel is the most famous & historic place to stay if your budget allows.  This was the first hotel in Zermatt and it was from here that Edward Whymper set out on the first successful ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865.  It's right in the centre of the town only 400m from the station, with a superb 9/10 review score.

Otherwise (assuming your budget won't stretch to the other top-notch place directly opposite the Monte Rosa, the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof , opened in 1879), a much more affordable and down-to-earth choice close to the station in Zermatt's main street is the clean & comfortable Hotel Garni Testa Grigia .  Or just search booking.com , anything with a review score over 8.0 will be great.

The Hotel Waldhaus am See is an easy 4 minutes walk from St Moritz railway station, see walking map .  It has friendly staff, a cosy, family-run atmosphere and the restaurant/breakfast room has a lovely view over the lake.  It's also about as affordable as hotels in St Moritz get.  Perfect!

Alternatively, the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl is a truly amazing hotel opened in 1907, perched on a 2,454m high mountain with spectacular views over the Engadin Valley, a short ride by train+funicular from St Moritz/Samedan/Pontresina.  I have never seen a more spectacular view out of any hotel window over breakfast.

To reach the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl , take a local train from St Moritz to Punt Muragl Staz , see Muottas Muragl train route map , or you can get off the Glacier Express at Samedan (the stop before St Moritz) and take a local train to Punt Muragl .  It's then a 250m walk from either of these unstaffed halts to the bottom of the funicular railway which climbs up the mountain to the Hotel Muottas Muragl.  To check train times, simply use the journey planner at www.sbb.ch and run an enquiry from anywhere in Switzerland to Muottas Muragl , that's the name of the upper station of the funicular right next to the hotel.

Aboard the Glacier Express (Zermatt to St. Moritz Route)

Last Modified: August 23, 2023 //  by  Anda //   29 Comments

The Glacier Express route from Zermatt to St. Moritz is Switzerland’s most beautiful train ride. Now that I look back at our 10 days in Switzerland , I think I owe the trip to the mythical Glacier Express. After all, it was the picture  of this train passing over the dramatic Landwasser Viaduct that convinced me to make this journey.

AGA_5485

The famous Swiss scenic trains are something every traveler should experience at least once in his/her lifetime. Although any rail line in Switzerland passes through beautiful cow pastures and flower-trimmed chalets, there are some rides that could rightfully claim the title, like the Jungfrau Railways ,  Gornegrat Railway Zermatt , Brunig Pass Interlaken-Lucerne , or Bernina Express.

The Glacier Express Route

Aboard the glacier express, buying a ticket for the glacier express route, a final thought.

The Glacier Express is a true classic. Arguably Switzerland’s most famous train ride, the Glacier Express is connecting the two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz.

Contrary to its name, the 75 year old Glacier Express is actually a slow-speed train. In fact, it is considered “the slowest express train in the world”  and for a good reason. The 275 km journey takes about 8 hours.

The narrow-gauge track goes across three high-mountain passes, passing through  91 tunnels and over 291 bridges. The ride is out-of-this world beautiful!

We boarded the train in the little village of Zermatt knowing that we have a full day of riding ahead of us. But we were in no rush to see this journey end. Why would we want to race through the spectacular scenery of green valleys, blue rivers, dramatic limestone arches and gorges?

Scenery on the Glacier Express route

Seated comfortably in my seat, as the train pulled out of the station, I felt like I was on a movie set. The bright red carriages with almost floor to ceiling windows were winding like a caterpillar through the snowy mountains. The scene was reminiscent of “The Polar Express.” How could one not enjoy this journey from the comfort of such a train?

Glacier Express first class carriage

After leaving Zermatt, the train started to descend from 1,600 m towards Brig, passing through many narrow places flanked by massive rock walls, then climbed up again to 2034 m, the higest point of this journey. Along the way you we came across pristine mountain landscapes, deep gorges, glamorous health resorts, delightful little towns, and impressive viaducts.

Swiss villages

The scenery is so incredibly beautiful that it’s hard to sit still. Those of you who know my passion for photography can imagine that I was constantly taking pictures. Unfortunately, the window glare messed up most of them.

Swiss village on the Glacier Express route

Although the Glacier express has panoramic windows, they are fully sealed and can’t be opened. With the sun streaming in it gets a little warm,  but the train is air conditioned.

Alpine scenery on the train route

In the first class we were provided headphones, so all along the way we got information about the Glacier Express route. You can order food onboard, but we brought our own lunch and I’m glad we did. Their food didn’t look very tasty and it was quite expensive.

One inconvenience the Glacier Express is that seat reservation is mandatory. However, although you reserve a seat you can’t actually choose it. So you may find yourself stuck with your back in the direction of the train and facing a couple of total strangers for 7.5 hours.

Seat reservation is not cheap. With the Swiss Rail Pass you get a discount, but we still paid 420 CHF/person (428 USD). Ouch!

Alpine scenery

There are regular train services as well for this route, so you don’t need to buy an expensive Glacier Express ticket to get from Zermatt to St. Moritz. On the regular trains you don’t need to make a reservation if you travel with the Swiss Pass. Plus, you can hop off and back on again along the way at the many little stops.

The regular trains do not offer the panoramic windows and the same level of comfort, but other than that you can see the landscape just as well. The Glacier Express is just like a normal Swiss train but with better service.

I have to say that although it was an expensive adventure, the train ride was quite an experience and 7.5 hours passed quite quickly. So is the Glacier Express really worth the money? You’ll have to decide that based on your budget. I’m glad we did it, but at this price I wouldn’t do it again!

Switzerland train rides are the best! Your pictures are making me nostalgic about the 4 times we have been to the swiss Alps 🙂 Such a beautiful country! Expensive though!

Thank you Samiya. I just love Switzerland!

Thanks for the warning! Traveling by train or other “public transportation” is comfortable, better than driving, but if your main reason for taking the train is to take photos, then I can see how you were disappointed. And yes, I’d hate having to sit facing strangers. Why would they even think designing seats like that is a good idea?

August 9, 2015 at 11:37 pm

Truth is that the Glacier Express offers a beautiful ride, but the same route can be made by a regular train for so much less and with more flexibility.

With many of these travel experiences you just never know what your actual impression will be- and it’s certainly different from the next person. Hence, it’s so great to read the travel blog posts and …just be prepared for surprises!

August 9, 2015 at 11:47 pm

It’s not that I didn’t like the ride, Victoria, but next time I’ll take a regular train. It offers much more flexibility.

Anda as were planning on riding the Glacier Express in December so this is a timely blog to read. Love your photos as always.

I think you’ll love this route in winter, Lyn.

Switzerland Tourism took a group of travel agents on the Glacier Express after a fancy graduation party for Switzerland Network in St Moritz. Everyone thought it was just too long. Pretty, yes…but we ended up taking about 9 hours to make it to Zermatt..

August 9, 2015 at 11:54 pm

For me it went pretty fast, but I was frustrated with the windows. Too much glare.

Sarah Lambert

August 8, 2015 at 4:03 am

Such beautiful pictures in this post! Even if you didn’t get all the pictures you wanted on the trip.

Must get myself there!

August 9, 2015 at 11:56 pm

Thank you Sarah, that’s very kind of you.

Really interesting stuff. I feel your pain about being unable to take the pictures! I love train journeys, but am not sure about this one and think perhaps we would take your advice and do the hop on and off on a different train. Would still love to journey through the Swiss mountains though!

August 10, 2015 at 12:00 am

Maybe it was my frustration with the sealed windows, Sara. I actually liked the ride, but the regular trains will take you on the same route with less hassle.

August 7, 2015 at 5:16 pm

Hmmm! Good to know all these details. I would be bummed if after paying a not so cheap ticket, I end up in the back area you described. So, some seats do not have a window view? Sounds like one of those attractions you want to experience because there is a lot of hype surrounding it but you do not feel like repeating it after that time (because there are popular attractions that I feel like repeating).

August 9, 2015 at 7:59 am

I think you misunderstood me, Ruth. The Glacier Express cars have windows from floor to ceiling almost, so you can see from any seat. The problem is that if you are seated with your back towards the direction of the train you get to see the scenery only after it passes you, so it’s difficult to photograph a beautiful mountain peak, or a bridge, etc.

August 7, 2015 at 1:51 pm

Interesting! I was going to take my son on this because he loves trains. It sounds like we’d be better off on the local trains and spread it out over a couple of days. I’m sure we’d be able to find a place to stay overnight. Such a shame, the Glacier Express is billed as one of those ‘must do’ train experiences.

August 9, 2015 at 7:51 am

I hope I didn’t discourage you from riding the Glacier Express, Shobha. It’s not a bad experience at all, but from the standpoint of a photographer, it was a disappointment.

I would of been very upset too if I had the sun glare in my eyes the whole time and wasn’t able to take pictures. That’s a long train ride.

August 8, 2015 at 11:08 pm

I was more upset about the fact that I paid a great deal of money for this train and instead of getting to face to face seems, we have been seated in front of two very boring people who chatted constantly for 8 hours. That’s way I went mainly standing, trying to take pictures.

August 7, 2015 at 5:02 am

We took the Bernina Express trip (on a very similar looking red train) from Tirano to St. Moritz. The scenery was just delightful, and at each end of the carriage, there was a window which slid down so that you could lean out the side and take photos without the reflection. It was the best of both worlds, and one of the highlights of our trip 🙂

August 8, 2015 at 11:02 pm

I wanted to use the Bernina Express to get from St.Moritz till Lake Lugano, but instead we rented a car.

August 6, 2015 at 3:19 am

The photos did come out great anyway. I know that frustration, plus my family tends to get a bit board on trains, even the beautiful scenery ones. I generally find myself standing in an outside area so I can take photos. Great advice on this one should I find myself in Switzerland some day.

August 6, 2015 at 8:18 am

Thank you for commenting, Rhonda.

Suze the Luxury Columnist

August 6, 2015 at 2:13 am

I’ll know to take the regular train carriage, so as to be able to swap seats – your photos came out really well anyway, Anda

August 6, 2015 at 2:47 am

Thank you, Suze. I’ll take the regular train too.

August 6, 2015 at 12:39 am

We took the regular train on the same route. The train was practically empty and we could jump from side to side to get the best pics. every glacier express carriage was full of people – for about twice the price. Still the scenery is a must see, no matter which way you choose to travel.

August 6, 2015 at 1:17 am

Exactly what I suspected, Megsy. Next time I’ll know better, but I can’t say I didn’t enjoy the experience.

August 5, 2015 at 11:23 pm

That’s great advice! It’s always good to have first-hand experience to guide in choosing routes and modes of transport. It looks like such a scenic journey!

Zermatt (Zermatt)

At a glance, accessibility, left luggage, travel information desk, local tourism information, terminus station.

Zermatt has two stations which are across the street from each other. This station, which is operated by the Mattherhorn Gotthard Bahn is a terminus station so to exit the station on to the surrounding streets, you simply have to walk ahead and then turn to the left when you see the street outside. The station has a large concrete roof, presumably to offer the ultimate in weather protection, so it has an aura of an underground station., Left luggage lockers are available, which are particularly useful when taking a day trip to the town and its surrounding area. Aside from the travel desk / ticket office and the stores, which sell clothing and equipment for hiking, climbing and skiing, the station's dominant feature is the cafe / restaurant .

The station operated by the Gornergrat Bahn (GGB) is across the street from the exit at the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn station. Though something to keep in mind, particularly when making a day trip to Zermatt, is that you may not be able to board the next GGB train to depart. A key attraction on riding these trains is the views from the Gornergrat Bahn towards the Matterhorn mountain, so on the days when clear views are available, many of those holidaying in Zermatt, evidently make a spontaneous decision to take these trains. Hence when SMTJ arrived in Zermatt, the queues at the ticket office were long enough to fill the next two departures and station staff were informing those intending to travel that the third departure would be used by a holiday party . So the next available departure was leaving in around two hours!

Zermatt A wonder destination

The train journey from brig to matterhorn.

Zermatt is a Car Free Location

Zermatt is a car free location and that is one of the many attractive things about it. The fact that you can breathe pollution free fresh air in this land is the best feeling ever. It is the very thing that attracts a large number of tourists to this place. In fact, not so long ago, the place named Matterhorn was termed inaccessible even on foot. Hence, accessing this place by car is totally an unthinkable thing. However surprising it may sound, but yes, there is a car free and pollution free zone, existing in this world of global warming.

Get there through a Train

Of course, there is a whole lot more to Zermatt than the fact that it is car free. Yet, there is no denying that “car-free” is the best thing to happen to that place. However, in this svelte-svelte world, how does one ever reach a car free zone? Well, no, it isn’t rocket science. One can simply access this place using a railway line. The BVZ railway line is one of the best ways of getting here if you don’t want to do it in foot. The train starts from a place called Brig and leaves you off at Zermatt. The entire journey is a little more than 16,000 metres.

The Train Journey is a Memorable Thing

This train journey is admirable, breathtaking and enjoyable and will consume 80 minutes of your life. However, those 80 minutes of train journey is well worth it. The train itself is lovely and cute to look at. No, the cute wasn’t cheesy because it really is cute! And if you aren’t someone too interested in trains then, you can simply enjoy the outside view which is just as beautiful. So, enjoy that little journey of 44 kilometres which are every bit worth it and you are never going to regret it. Go; hire the train from brig then! What are you waiting for?

Not only is the train very well decorated and that it offers a nice view, but it also provides excellent service. One can rely blindly on swiss transport and this train goes out to prove just as much. It will transport you from the city hustle, right into the heaven at Zermatt. Yes, the entire way, the journey is actually going to seem like the one you made to heaven with beautiful mountains and lakes to look at all along.
