Islands of Lakshadweep

The islands of Lakshadweep are beautiful inside out and their beauty is unparalleled. With its laid-back vibe, the islands of Lakshadweep offer an experience which is bound to create lasting impressions.

In this post, we provide all the details so that you can plan for a perfect Lakshadweep holiday.

Lakshadweep is an archipelago made up of thirty-six islands spread across an area of 32 sq. kilometers, 10 out of them are inhabited – Agatti, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan, Amini, Bitra, Chetlat, Androthm, Bangaram, and Minicoy.

Tourists are allowed to visit a few of the selected islands. The islands of Agatti, Kadmat, Kavaratti, Minicoy, Bangaram, and Thinnakara .

Location : Located between 8° and 12° North Latitude and 71° and 74° East Longitude.

Inhabited Islands: Agatti, Amini, Andrott, Bitra, Chetlat, Kadmat, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Kiltan, and Minicoy

Languages Spoken: Malayalam & Mahl (spoken on Minicoy Island). Jeseri ( similar to Malayalam with a hint of Tamil) is a dialect that is also spoken in Lakshadweep.

Total Population: As per the 2011 census, the population of Lakshadweep is 64,473 of which 93% are Muslims.

Occupation: Fishing and coconut cultivation are the major occupation on the islands. Tuna fish is the biggest export of the islands.

Two days/ Weekend Excursion Package: Lakshadweep islands are perfect weekend getaways from Cochin, Mangalore, and Beypore. The ship departs on Saturday from Kochi/Mangalore/Beypore and on Monday it returns to Kochi/Mangalore/Beypore.

Best Time To Visit Lakshadweep

October to March/April is the best time to visit any of the islands of Lakshadweep with temperatures dropping to 30°C along the coast.

If you still want to visit during the off-season, chopper services are available. But it is advisable to check before planning. October to May is the perfect time if you want to opt for cruise packages.

Summer Months: March to May

Monsoon Months: May to mid-September

Winter Months: September to Feb

Islands To Visit in Lakshadweep

Agatti island.

Agatti Island will be your first stop as you land at Lakshadweep . The island boasts of having some of the finest beaches and offers tons of water sports activities. The beaches are clean and the water is deep blue teeming with the most colorful and diverse underwater world.

Where To Stay:

Local guesthouses and a few private-run resorts are the only options.

Bangaram Island

Surrounded by a shallow lagoon this island is one of the most beautiful islands of Lakshadweep. It boasts world-class corals and rich marine life. From shipwreck snorkeling sites to hidden beaches with hermit crabs, the bluest of the blue ocean to a lagoon full of sea turtles, Bangaram fits the bill perfectly for a perfect beach experience.

Where To Stay:

The only option is to stay at the Bangaram Island resort which is run by SPORTS ( Lakshadweep Tourism ).

Travel Time

From Agatti: 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the boat.

Pareli 1 & 2

These tiny islands surrounded by the shallow lagoon on one side and the deep sea on the other can be covered by foot in 15-30 minutes. The shallow lagoon is home to numerous sea turtles whereas the deep sea is home to sharks and stingrays.

The island is full of ( hungry 😉 ) hermit crabs, and sea turtles.

From Agatti: 30 -75 min depending on the boat
From Bangaram: 20-40 min depending on the boat
From Thinnakara: 15 min

A bite-sized island midst a shallow lagoon makes Thinnakara an ideal place for vacation. It is isolated and just a few cottages are dotted on the shores. It is a perfect escape for those who want to be away from the rush of life. You can snorkel, sail out in your kayak, play beach volleyball, and relax in a hammock doing nothing.

Even at times, it might happen you are the only one with the resort staff on the island.

From Agatti: 20-40 min depending on the boat.

Kadamat Island

Kadmat is one of the most stunning islands in the archipelago. You will find dolphins cleaving through the clear blue waters, sea turtles all around might come to greet you on your way to Kadmat from Agatti.

The phenomenal sweep of talcum-powder sand with dramatic waves breaking across the bay is an everyday thing here. Apart from the scenic vista, the island also offers various water sports activities like diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paragliding to name a few. Some of the best diving spots can be found here.

Kadmat Island Resort – You have an option of NonAC tents and AC rooms to choose from. However, the Non-AC tents are a little far from the main resort.

Minicoy Island

Minicoy Island is a beautiful coral island dotted in the Arabian Sea full of dense coconut groves, a long stretch of white powdery beaches, and an amazing marine world. The island is distinct from the rest of the islands in terms of culture, lifestyle, and language. You can find a lot of influence from Maldivian and South Indian culture on this island.

There are three tourist cottages and one 20-bed tourist home.

Kalpeni Island

Kalpeni is famed for its bewitching landscape with the small islets Tilakkam & Pitti and an uninhabited island on the north called Cheriyam. You can walk to Cheriyam island from Kalpeni during low tides but make sure you are not barefoot.

The islands of Kalpeni were reshaped because of a huge storm in the 1800s and the formation of the beautiful corals is attributed to this storm. It has the largest lagoons among all the islands of Lakshadweep. These lagoons are quite shallow and are perfect for all sorts of water sports activities. You can also explore the Sait Moinuddin mosque while on the island.

Koomel Beach Resort is the only resort for tourists and it is run by SPORTS (Lakshadweep Tourism).

Kavaratti Island

It is the capital of Lakshadweep and the most developed of all the islands. Apart from sun-drenched white sandy beaches, and amazing coral reefs, you can also explore the aquarium and museum on the island.

Ujra Mosque constructed by Sheikh Mohammad Kasim in the 17th century is one of the most prominent attractions on the island and draws a lot of tourists. The island also offers a plethora of water sports activities like kayaking, snorkeling, parasailing, and scuba diving at a very reasonable rate.

Stay at Bangaram – INR 10,000 for a Tent and INR 15,000 for a Cottage

Stay at Thinnakara – INR 10,000 for Tent

Inter-island transfers could be arranged and the price varies depending on the boat. Everything for us was organized by the Sports and we paid around 60-65 K.

Recently, my wanderlust led me to the enchanting Lakshadweep Islands, an archipelago nestled in the Arabian Sea off the southwestern coast of India.

This hidden gem has swiftly become India’s new favorite travel destination, and here’s everything you need to know before you embark on your journey to this tropical paradise.

Lakshadweep, translating to ‘a hundred thousand islands’ in Malayalam, is an archipelago comprising 36 islands. Only a select few are open to tourists, ensuring an intimate and serene experience surrounded by the ethereal beauty of coral atolls and pristine turquoise waters.

How to Reach Lakshwadeep

By Air: The Cochin International Airport (COK) in Kochi is well-connected to major cities in India and abroad. Once you reach Kochi, you can proceed to the next step.
By Train: Ernakulam Junction and Ernakulam Town are the main railway stations in Kochi. You can take a train to Kochi and then proceed to the following step.

Step 2: Travel to Lakshadweep by Ship or Flight:

Ensure you book your ship tickets well in advance as the availability is limited.
Check the schedule of ships as they don’t operate daily.
Air India and IndiGo operate flights to Agatti from Kochi.
Flight schedules can be subject to change, so check the availability and timings before planning.

Book flight tickets as early as possible (45- 60 days in advance). There is only one flight going daily, and tickets get booked out fast.
You need to have a Police Verification Certificate to get your Lakshadweep permit processed. Approach the nearby local police station in your city, and tell them you need a PCC for travelling to Lakshadweep. The process might take 10-20 days, so apply at least a month before your travel dates
You will need an authorized Lakshadweep agent to process your permits to visit the island. Mail him your Aadhar card, your PCC, a passport size photograph and they will help you get the permits. You will also need to book your stay through an authorized agent.
The resorts in Agatti are relatively less luxurious than you would find in other parts of the country with more tourism. But they are clean and the staff is warm and friendly.
There are hardly any plush cafes or restaurants in Agatti. Meals are usually had at the resort itself and are part of tour packages. Meals served are south Indian meals – rice, sambar, a vegetable and fish or chicken. Carry snacks from the mainland if you are fussy about food. You can of course buy snacks in the town market.
The locals are conservative. If you are heading into town, please dress conservatively. You can dress whatever you want when you are at the beaches, resorts or away from the main town.
If you love being in the water, carry your own pair of snorkel glasses (you can buy from Decathlon). On our trip, we spent hours snorkeling at the reefs close to the beach.
There are conflicting reports about whether you can carry alcohol into Lakshadweep or not. Please speak to your agent before the trip. Last we heard, you cant take alcohol to Lakshadweep, it’s strictly prohibited. The Bangaram resort does have a bar, there are no bars in Agatti.
You can either stay in Bangaram or in Agatti during your Lakshadweep trip to the northern islands. You can’t stay at both. You can of course visit the islands on a day trip. Accommodation and packages for Agatti are relatively less expensive than Bangaram.
Shipwreck snorkeling – About a ten minute boat ride from Bangaram, there is a ship wreck submerged in the ocean. The marine life in that area is On On His Own Trip’s new year Lakshadweep group trip, this was the best snorkeling we did in all five days. The water is crystal clear, and there are a thousand fishes all flitting about.
Sandbank – Not far from the shipwreck snorkeling is a thin sand bank. During low tide, the water just touches its edges. The sandbank gleams white and is a wonderful spot for taking pictures. Best time to be here is during sunset.
Palari island – This is very close to Bangaram island and is probably the best spot to see turtles.
Kayak to the airport : When can you ever tell your friends you went to the airport by kayak! The island of Agatti is really small, and you can easily kayak from the resort to the airport, by sea. We did the same, and even saw a plane taking off right in front of us!
Kayaking at sunset : The sun is a bright ball of orange fire as it descends into the ocean, and to be there in the middle of the ocean in a kayak, watching it with a loved one, and the water bobbing around the kayak is a lovely feeling.

How to Reach

Lakshadweep Island can be reached by ships and flights operated from Kochi. For all tourist purposes Kochi is the gate way to Lakshadweep.

Agatti and Bangaram islands can be reached by flight from Kochi. Indian Airlines operate flights from Kochi. Onward flights from Kochi are available to most of the airports in India and abroad. Airstrip is there in Agatti island only. From Agatti boats are available to Kavaratti and Kadmat during fair season October to May. Helicopter transfer is available from Agatti to Kavaratti during monsoon season subjected to availability of helicopter. The flight from Cochin to Agatti takes approximately one hour and thirty minutes.

Seven passenger ships – MV Kavaratti, MV Arabian Sea, MV Lakshadweep Sea, MV Lagoon, MV Corals, MV Amindivi and MV Minicoy operate between Cochin and Lakshadweep islands. The passage takes 14 to 18 hours depending on island chosen for journey. The Madras High Court has made it mandatory for all motor vehicles seeking to enter the Nilgiris and Kodaikanal between May 7 and June 30 to obtain electronic passes. The aim is to collect data on the number of tourists visiting and the number and types of vehicles that are entering these hill stations.

Heavy traffic in the hills: The court’s order came as the Tamil Nadu government filed a status report that said 20,000 vehicles enter these hill stations every day. This posed concerns for the elephants in the region as well as the drought prevailing in the Nilgiris, though the court clarified that there won’t be a cap on the number of e-passes issued.

Last month, the government of Tamil Nadu had agreed to fix the carrying capacity for roads leading to these eco-sensitive hill stations after a scientific assessment. The court has now asked the district administrations to collect as much information as possible regarding the tourists visiting these areas while issuing the e-passes to help the assessment.

Overtourism in India: Hill stations in India have been facing overcrowding during peak summers as tourists in large numbers flock to these destinations.

In 2023, destinations such as Nainital, Kasauli, Shimla, and Manali faced an influx of tourists, causing local authorities to place entry restrictions. The government of India also supported the idea of determining carrying capacity of hill stations and eco-sensitive locations in the Himalayan states to curb overtourism.

Apart from measures like fixing carrying capacity at sensitive locations, the government is working to develop destinations and improve infrastructure to tackle possible overcrowding. These include building and revamping destinations like Ujjain and Varanasi. India is also trying to popularize alternative underpenetrated tourist destinations like Lakshadweep. Moreover, states like Goa and Kerala are also focusing on sustainable and regenerative strategies that can tackle ill-effects of overtourism.

Aditya Agarwal Steps Down as Cleartrip’s CFO

Online travel company has announced that its chief financial officer (CFO) Aditya Agarwal has decided to step down from his role. The company has said that Agarwal’s decision is due to personal reasons. He was with the company for nine years and played a key role in Cleartrip’s financial strategy and organizational growth.

This has come two months after Cleartrip CEO Ayyappan Rajagopal announced his decision to leave the company after 11 years. Rajagopal has plans to set up his own business after his departure from the company, he had said in a post on LinkedIn.

In view of Agarwal’s departure, Cleartrip has said that Akshat Mishra will take over as the new head of business finance.

AirAsia Announces New Routes to Kozhikode, Guwahati

Low-cost carrier AirAsia has announced two new routes to Kozhikode and Guwahati from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. With this, the airline will have 15 direct routes in India. AirAsia will operate three weekly flights to both these destinations starting August 1.

The airline’s group chief commercial officer Paul Caroll said that India is one of the biggest markets for AirAsia and it is accelerating its operations in the country.

Since January this year, AirAsia has announced seven new routes in India, including those to Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Thiruvananthapuram, and Visakhapatnam. Till 2023, the airline was operating eight routes in India.

Korea Tourism Holds Roadshows to Showcase Leisure, MICE Potential in India

The Korea Tourism Organization conducted roadshows in India to showcase its leisure and Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) potential. This comes as the country has set a target to welcome 200,000 Indian tourists this year. Of these, Korea aims to receive 20,000 MICE delegates.

Regional director Myong Kil Yun said, “With a record-breaking target of welcoming 200,000 Indian travelers this year, the recent roadshows were a success. We are confident that by showcasing the diverse experiences Korea offers, we can achieve this ambitious goal.”

In 2023, 120,000 Indian travelers visited South Korea. In order to meet its goal this year, the country is looking at joint marketing promotions, familiarization trips, multi-city roadshows, as well as digital marketing promotions.

Thomas Cook, SOTC Operate Inaugural Bengaluru-Bhutan Charter Flight

Travel services provider Thomas Cook, along with its group company SOTC, operated its inaugural charter flight between Bengaluru and Bhutan’s Paro at 100% occupancy. “This exceptional delivery underscores the robust demand from Bengaluru and Karnataka for premium destinations-experiences,” the company said in a statement.

The company’s charter flights scheduled for May 4 and 11 have also been fully booked. This has led to Thomas Cook’s decision to operate two additional charters on May 18 and 25.

Thomas Cook country head for Holidays Rajeev Kale said, “We had handpicked Bengaluru airport as the hub/gateway for this initiative based on three clear opportunities. First is that Karnataka is our top source market. Moreover, there is a high demand for consumers for unique destinations-experiences. Another reason is the absence of direct connectivity for Bhutan from South India.”

Four Points by Sheraton Opens Resort in Jammu and Kashmir’s Sonmarg

Four Points by Sheraton has announced the opening of Four Points by Sheraton Sonmarg Resort in Jammu and Kashmir. The 47-key resort marks the brand’s debut in Sonmarg. Marriott also operates a hotel under the Four Points by Sheraton brand in Srinagar.

At the launch, Marriott’s South Asia area vice president Ranju Alex said, “This strategic expansion underlines our commitment to growth in the region and showcases how our brands cater to a wide range of travel needs and preferences.” This year, the company aims to open 12 hotels in India and as part of its strategy, it also debuted its Moxy brand in January.

Uttarakhand Tourism Launches India’s First Astro Tourism Campaign

Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board has partnered with astro tourism company Starscapes to launch ‘Nakshatra Sabha’ , the first astro tourism campaign in India. As part of this initiative, the state tourism will promote astro tourism activities such as stargazing, special solar observations, astrophotography contests, and camping under the stars among others.

The campaign activities will cover several destinations in the state, including Uttarkashi, Pithoragarh, Nainital, and Chamoli. With this campaign, the state is also hoping to advocate the preservation of dark skies in the state.

With this, Uttarakhand is hoping to position itself as the preferred destination for astro tourism for enthusiasts from all over the world.

Booking.com Unveils Indian Travelers’ Trip Planning Preferences

Online travel company Booking.com has revealed that 61% Indian travelers prefer to book their flights first, before they secure their accommodation. It added that nearly 40% of the travelers book event tickets well in advance. Additionally, about 25% of the travelers prefer to book multiple aspects of their trips at the same time.

More than half the Indian travelers choose to buy travel insurance before they even book their accommodation. Moreover, nearly a third of Indian travelers wait until after booking their stays and just before their trips, to arrange car rentals, restaurant reservations and taxis.
