It’s a four-hour flight in from London before you even get to start hopping from isle to isle. Thankfully, there are oodles of connections and multiple entry points. Picking the right one is certainly worth thinking about when planning a cross-island jaunt, too, because some are better starting positions than others.

In total there are eight main islands in the group, but a whole scattering more smaller islets that have tiny populations, and, on top of that, oodles of rocks that are little more than perches for seagulls above the swells. The ones we’ll focus on here are the eight main islands since they are by far the ones that you’re most likely to want to visit for your holidays.

Said isles fall into two main groups: The western and the eastern group. There’s a strait of about 58 miles dividing the two sets, but they are more discernable thanks to their geography – the western isles are lusher and more altitudinous, while the eastern group is more rugged and volcanic. Here’s a closer look at which islands belong to which group:

• The western group: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Gomera, La Palma
• The eastern group: Fuerteventura, Lanzarote.

Let’s begin by stating the obvious: There are only two ways to cross from isle to isle, by sea or by air. To put it another way, by plane or by boat.

Mhmm, there are no bridges that link any of the isles, no underwater tunnels, no causeways. You’re going to have to ditch the wheels for this one. The good news is that actually makes things pretty simple, as you always know there are only ever two choices for getting from A to B in these parts.

Generally speaking, flying is considered the fastest option while sailing is more relaxed. However, there are some routes that you might have to do by one method simply because there is no boat or flight connection on the menu. That’s why it’s worth getting to know a bit about both modes of transport…

How to travel between Canary Islands by plane

Here’s the good news: Every single major island of the eight in the Canaries has its own airport, while Tenerife – one of the most popular – even has two. That probably makes this one of the best-connected regions for aviation in the whole of Europe, although most of the terminals are pretty small and only host a handful of carriers.

Talking of carriers…there are two main names to know about when it comes to internal flying here. Let’s take a quick look at each in turn:

• Binter Canarias – The biggest of the two carriers who operate domestic routes throughout the Canaries, Binter, as it’s known for short, has an encompassing array of links between major islands but also serves international destinations in mainland Spain and other Atlantic archipelagos like Cabo Verde.
• Canaryfly – A relatively new name on the block, Canaryfly was founded in 2008 and currently runs flights on eight of the most popular routes in the chain.

Both of the above operate airplanes designed specifically for short haul carrying. That means no massive Boeing and Airbus models, but rather smaller prop planes built by Bombardier and the like. The upshot? Capacity tends to be smaller so flights can sell out faster, but there’s also not an overload of demand and there are often multiple departures each day on the most popular routes.

Route wise, things are pretty good when it comes to moving from major islands to other major islands. For example, you can get upwards of 10 connections a day on Binter Canarias between Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. The same can’t be said for getting to smaller islands like La Gomera, which only has two or three daily links to Gran Canaria, and sometimes no links to other islands at all, meaning a stopover will be needed if you want to do certain legs in a single trip.

Prices tend to be VERY attractive for flights. As an example, springtime fares on Binter from Tenerife North to La Palma can be as low as €12.50 ($13.15) each way, while connections on the most popular routes rarely swell past €27 ($28.40) each way. These are also full-service fares, mostly allowing for some changes and with a checked baggage allowance of 20kg per person (10kg for infants). Not bad, eh?

The truth is that flying from Canary to Canary is now the number-one choice among travelers. Dropping airfare and high convenience means it’s very often the best way to get from A to B, especially when looking to move quite far across the archipelago, say from Lanzarote in the east all the way to La Palma in the west.

If you don’t have a head for heights or want to travel slow, then there’s always the option of the boats. At least four big companies still offer a comprehensive array of island-to-island links here, including Armas , Biosfera Express, Líneas Romero, and Fred Olsen. Some specialize in different regions of the Canaries, while others cover the whole shebang.

Laying out every route there is by ferry in the Canaries would take a short book but suffice to say there are lots to pick from. A good starting point for planning a trip is to get to know the major ports of each island. That’s Arrecife in Lanzarote, for example, but Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, and then much smaller Puerto de la Estaca over in El Hierro. Ferry links naturally take longer than connections in the air. While a flight from Lanzarote to Gran Canaria is in the range of 45 minutes, a boat trip can clock up 5.5-6.5 hours in all. The weather in Tenerife and Gran Canaria is pretty much similar, although Tenerife has the massive Mount Teide right in the middle, which causes a lot of cloudiness, especially in the north of the island. Because of where the Canary Islands are located , they enjoy good weather all year round, with mild temperatures even in the winter. 

The south of Gran Canaria is usually recommended by many people as being sunnier than the south of Tenerife, especially the area of Puerto Mogan. It's true that in the north of Tenerife, it tends to rain more often than in the South. Also, the North of both islands is more prone to bad weather during the winter months, so we would recommend staying in the South if coming to either Gran Canaria or Tenerife between January and March.

In terms of landscapes and views our preference leans towards Tenerife , due to how spectacular Mt Teide is, the incredible views with the sea of clouds and also we love all the hiking trails inside Anaga Rural Park.

On the other side, in terms of lovely urban settings where you can stroll and enjoy the vibe, we prefer Gran Canaria , with its charming small towns and villages like Arucas, Teror, Firgas, Tejeda, Artenara and let's not forget the vibrant capital - Las Palmas de Gran Canaria - our absolute favourite place in all the Canary Islands. If, hypothetically, we had to choose only one place in the Canary Islands to be the only one we visit from now on, that place would be Las Palmas - no doubts about it. 

Which island has the best beaches? Tenerife or Gran Canaria?

In terms of beaches, we tend to prefer Gran Canaria over Tenerife.

In Tenerife, our favourite beaches are Playa Las Vistas (no. 1 for swimming), Playa de las Teresitas (depending on the season) and Playa Los Cristianos .

Although windier, the coast around El Medano has some lovely beaches and landscapes that deserve to be discovered - Playa La Tejita is one of the beaches with wild and rough beauty, as well as beautiful views of Montaja Roja.

In Gran Canaria, you have Playa del Ingles, the beautiful Maspalomas beach , as well as Playa de Puerto Rico , Playa Amadores and Playa de Mogan . In the capital, you have Las Canteras Beach, which is often listed as one of the best city beaches in Spain.

So in terms of beaches, we prefer Gran Canaria versus Tenerife.

If you want to come to the Canaries for the first time and you're trying to decide between Tenerife or Gran Canaria, we advise you to read well about them and think of what sort of things you want to do during your holiday and then decide which is the best Canary Island for you.

Well, this topic falls under the personal preferences category.

The main tourist areas both in Gran Canaria and in Tenerife are located in the south of the islands and when it comes to resorts we prefer Tenerife because most of the resorts are connected through an oceanfront promenade, so you can walk all the way from Los Cristianos to Playa Las Americas, Costa Adeje and up to La Caleta.

We also simply love the north of Tenerife, from small little towns to beautiful landscapes and the wild beaches in Anaga.

But this doesn't mean that Gran Canaria falls behind. As we already mentioned, the small towns of Gran Canaria are lovely to discover and walk around and let's not forget Las Palmas, the place where we keep returning whenever we are in Gran Canaria. 

So for us, Tenerife wins in terms of resorts and Gran Canaria wins in terms of the best city in the Canary Islands and best rural areas to explore. 

All the Canary Islands are beautiful in their own way and we would advise giving them all a try, especially if you're the type who wants to try new things and explore, as they are very different.

In terms of nightlife, Tenerife has Veronica's strip (which doesn't have the best reputation unfortunately), so we feel like Gran Canaria is better for people who enjoy partying and the area of Playa del Ingles is ideal for that. We're not such big fans of nightclubs and loud music, so this area is not for us, just like Las Americas isn't for us either, so when staying in the south of Tenerife we usually prefer Los Cristianos .

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canaries and it can be your destination for a city break if you only have a few days on the island. We really love the bars and the food scene in Las Palmas, so for those looking for a more urban experience in the Canary Islands, we recommend spending a few days in Las Palmas.

Our answer to this question would be... Why not Tenerife AND Gran Canaria?

• For a city break in a vibrant city , we recommend Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
• For surfers , we would recommend Tenerife.
• For beautiful beaches and swimming, we prefer Gran Canaria.
• For hiking and outdoor activities, we like Tenerife best.
• Also, Tenerife is home to the world-famous Loro Park and Siam Park , and each park is top of the line in their respective category so for many people, they could represent a big incentive in choosing Tenerife over Gran Canaria.
• For nightlife , restaurants and bars we prefer Gran Canaria.
• For families , we recommend Gran Canaria. Unless you want to spoil your children with the best waterpark in the world, then we would choose Tenerife for Siam Park. 

We think that these 2 islands have many similarities and both of them need to be discovered without being rushed. Depending on how much time you have you could split your holiday in two: fly to Tenerife, stay there for half the holiday, then take the ferry to Gran Canaria, stay there for a bit and fly home from here.

Thousands of people in Canary Islands take to streets calling for limit to tourist numbers

Thousands of people have taken to the streets on the Canary Islands to protest against tourism and say the region is "not for sale".

The residents are calling for the Spanish group of islands to temporarily limit tourist arrivals in a bid to stem a boom in short-term holiday rentals and hotel construction - which is driving up housing costs for locals.

Tourism accounts for 35% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in the Canary Islands , but demonstrators say changes to the industry must be made.

Groups protested in Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and La Palma on Saturday.

Signs reading "We don't want to see our island die", "Stop Hotels" and "Canaries not for sale" were seen as thousands of people took to the streets.

"It's not a message against the tourist, but against a tourism model that doesn't benefit this land and needs to be changed," said one protester in Tenerife's capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Marches were also held in cities on mainland Spain.

The groups are calling for local authorities to temporarily limit visitor numbers in order to alleviate pressure on the islands' environment, infrastructure and housing situation. They also hope the proposal will curb property purchases by foreigners.

Antonio Bullon, a protester in Tenerife, said: "The authorities must immediately stop this corrupt and destructive model that depletes the resources and makes the economy more precarious.

"The Canary Islands have limits and people's patience too."

THOUSANDS of people took to the streets today in Tenerife to demand restrictions on holidaymakers after telling Brits to "go home".

The anti-tourist hordes filled a square in the capital brandishing banners including some that read “You enjoy we suffer” in English.

More than 15,000 people waved Canary Islands’ flags and blew horns to make a deafening noise in capital Santa Cruz.

Protests also took place at the same time on other popular Canary islands including Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Campaigners have tried to distance themselves from anti-tourist graffiti which has appeared on walls and benches in and around southern Tenerife.

Bitter messages plastered in tourism hotspots over recent months have read "your paradise, our misery" and told "tourists go home".

Tenerife particularly has gone to bat against sun-seeking Brits who have even called hotels on the island out of fear they may not be safe on their holidays .

Residents of the sun-soaked destination have said they are "fed-up" of "low quality" Brit tourists who only come for the cheap beer, burgers and sunbathing .

But the Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo expressed his concern over the growing anti-tourism movement and begged holidaymakers to keep coming .

Banners at the mass protest today read: “Where is the money from tourism?” and "‘Tourist moratorium now.”

The marches were organised under the slogan "The Canary Islands have a limit.”

Anti-tourist protestors want the authorities to paralyse two projects including one which involves the construction of a five-star hotel by one of Tenerife’s last virgin beaches.

They are also looking for more protection from mass tourism - to help with the local environment, traffic and housing issues.

Other demands include the protection of natural spaces, a tourist tax and better working conditions for hotel cleaners, who joined today’s protest in Santa Cruz as they insisted to local press: “We are not slaves.”

More demonstrations are scheduled for the Spanish mainland in cities like Malaga and Madrid as well as London and Berlin.

Official sources put the number of demonstrators in Tenerife at midday at around 10,000 people.

By 1pm it had increased to 15,000 with some predictions that the crowd could end up surpassing 50,000.

Protestor Xiomara Cruz, who took part in Gran Canaria, said: “They made us believe that in the Canary Islands we live from tourism and what we want is the right of islanders to live in their land.”

Paula Rincon told local press: “It pains me that Canarians cannot afford to live in their own neighbourhoods.”

The marches in the Canary Islands are mostly taking place away from the main tourist hubs, which in Tenerife and Gran Canaria are in the south.

Some British holidaymakers have shown their support for the issues raised by the islanders but others have accused them of biting the hand that feeds them.

One Brit, Ellie Taylor, told The Sun : "Half the restaurants would not be open if it wasn’t for us.”

Another disgruntled sun-seeker has put it more simply, scrawling beside some of the graffiti: “F*** off.

"We pay your wages!”

The Canary Islands’ tourism minister Jessica de Leon has urged British holidaymakers not to cancel their holidays ahead of today’s demos.

Jorge Marichal, a hotel chain boss in Tenerife, revealed that Brits were ringing up out of fear they would not be safe on their holidays to the island .

He said: "One of the problems I am facing is that clients are beginning to call and ask what’s happening here and whether it’s safe."

While the hotel owner said he understands the pain of local people, he added that being "anti-tourist" is not the way to go in.

"It pains me because people confuse the message. We don’t have to be anti-tourist. What we have to do is demand infrastructure that matches the tourist model that’s been chosen," he said.

A wave of  anti-tourist graffiti spread across the island  to tell Brits they are not welcome.

Bitter messages outside tourism hotspots read "your paradise, our misery" and "tourists go home".

Thousands of anti-tourist protesters take to the streets in Tenerife as they demand freeze on holidaymakers

THOUSANDS of people took to the streets today in Tenerife to demand restrictions on holidaymakers after telling Brits to "go home".

The anti-tourist hordes filled a square in the capital brandishing banners including some that read “You enjoy we suffer” in English.

More than 15,000 people waved Canary Islands’ flags and blew horns to make a deafening noise in capital Santa Cruz.

Protests also took place at the same time on other popular Canary islands including Lanzarote and Gran Canaria.

Campaigners have tried to distance themselves from anti-tourist graffiti which has appeared on walls and benches in and around southern Tenerife.

Bitter messages plastered in tourism hotspots over recent months have read "your paradise, our misery" and told "tourists go home".

Tenerife particularly has gone to bat against sun-seeking Brits who have even called hotels on the island out of fear they may not be safe on their holidays .

Residents of the sun-soaked destination have said they are "fed-up" of "low quality" Brit tourists who only come for the cheap beer, burgers and sunbathing .

But the Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo expressed his concern over the growing anti-tourism movement and begged holidaymakers to keep coming .

Banners at the mass protest today read: “Where is the money from tourism?” and "‘Tourist moratorium now.”

The marches were organised under the slogan "The Canary Islands have a limit.”

Anti-tourist protestors want the authorities to paralyse two projects including one which involves the construction of a five-star hotel by one of Tenerife’s last virgin beaches.

They are also looking for more protection from mass tourism - to help with the local environment, traffic and housing issues.

Other demands include the protection of natural spaces, a tourist tax and better working conditions for hotel cleaners, who joined today’s protest in Santa Cruz as they insisted to local press: “We are not slaves.”

More demonstrations are scheduled for the Spanish mainland in cities like Malaga and Madrid as well as London and Berlin.

Official sources put the number of demonstrators in Tenerife at midday at around 10,000 people.

By 1pm it had increased to 15,000 with some predictions that the crowd could end up surpassing 50,000.

Protestor Xiomara Cruz, who took part in Gran Canaria, said: “They made us believe that in the Canary Islands we live from tourism and what we want is the right of islanders to live in their land.”

Paula Rincon told local press: “It pains me that Canarians cannot afford to live in their own neighbourhoods.”

The marches in the Canary Islands are mostly taking place away from the main tourist hubs, which in Tenerife and Gran Canaria are in the south.

Some British holidaymakers have shown their support for the issues raised by the islanders but others have accused them of biting the hand that feeds them.

One Brit, Ellie Taylor, told The Sun : "Half the restaurants would not be open if it wasn’t for us.”

Another disgruntled sun-seeker has put it more simply, scrawling beside some of the graffiti: “F*** off.

"We pay your wages!”
