Dodge Journey 2018, analizamos la gama de un dinosaurio que se resiste al meteorito

Por estos días se cumplen 10 años del lanzamiento del Dodge Journey . Salió a la venta en Norteamérica durante el primer trimestre de 2008 y en sus años de gloria logró colocarse como uno de los más vendidos de su categoría y de los modelos más populares de México . Hoy, transcurrida una década, la historia es distinta, pero el Dodge Journey sigue intentándolo.

Como primera idea al aire, podríamos pensar que en FCA se han olvidado por completo de un reemplazo para el Journey... y no estamos tan equivocados. A corto plazo no parece haber intención de una nueva generación, pero sí hay sucesores indirectos. Dentro de la misma casa, los Jeep Compass y Cherokee juegan de cierto modo su mismo papel.

La oferta del segmento se ha multiplicado y actualizado desde la última vez que vimos un nuevo Journey. Cuando la marca cayó en manos de Fiat pudimos presenciar una renovación del interior, con formas más agradables y mejores acabados. Desde entonces no ha habido un retoque significativo , salvo la llegada de versiones de apariencia deportiva, pero nada más.

El Dodge Journey básico lleva tres airbags

Comencemos con el análisis de la gama. El Dodge Journey básico se llama SE, cuesta 407,900 pesos y es el único de toda la oferta que sólo puede llevar a cinco pasajeros —el resto sí tiene tres filas de asientos. Su equipo de confort es modesto para el segmento, pero suficiente : incluye climatizador automático, rines de 17 pulgadas, faros de halógeno, computadora de viaje, control de velocidad crucero, llave inteligente, vestiduras en tela e infotenimiento con pantalla de 4.3 pulgadas.

A partir de la versión SXT ya equipa 7 airbags e infotenimiento con reproductor de DVD y pantalla de 9 pulgadas en la segunda fila.

En su momento, el Dodge Journey fue muy bien evaluado en términos de seguridad, pero no se han realizado pruebas recientes que aseguren que hoy obtendría los mismos resultados bajo los nuevos estándares. De cualquier manera, para México la versión de acceso sufre algunos recortes de seguridad. Sí hay frenos ABS y controles electrónicos de tracción y estabilidad, pero sólo lleva airbags frontales y de rodilla para el conductor.

La siguiente versión de la gama, el Journey SXT , ya lleva siete bolsas de aire y crece de manera importante en equipamiento de confort. De hecho, si hacemos de lado su antigüedad y el bajo rendimiento de combustible, se presenta como una alternativa muy apetecible para quien quiere mover cómodos a siete pasajeros, sobre todo al ver su etiqueta de 441,300 pesos .

Las cuatro versiones con motor de 2.4 litros llevan transmisión automática de sólo cuatro cambios.

Lleva climatizador automático de triple zona, asiento del conductor con ajuste eléctrico, entretenimiento para la segunda fila de asientos con reproductor de DVD y pantalla de 9 pulgadas , toma de corriente de 115 voltios, sistema de sonido Alpine, espejo retrovisor electrocromático e infotenimiento UConnect con pantalla de 8.4 pulgadas. Muy completo frente a lo que ofrecen otros C-SUV de precio similar. Existen otras dos versiones SXT, una de lujo que por 27,000 pesos extra sólo suma tapicería en piel y otra deportiva que cuesta 46,000 pesos más y añade rines de 19 pulgadas, accesorios estéticos y quemacocos.

Los Dodge Journey SE y SXT llevan un propulsor de 2.4 litros que desarrolla 173 hp y 166 lb-pie , apenas suficientes para competir contra los C-SUV que aún conservan motores atmosféricos dentro de sus opciones. Sin embargo, el Journey se queda atrás al ofrecer una anticuada transmisión automática de sólo cuatro velocidades con modo manual. Según cifras de la EPA, el consumo es de 8 km/l en ciudad y 10.6 km/l en carretera.

Hay una versión V6 que rebasa los 500,000 pesos

Llegamos a la versión más equipada de la gama, el Journey GT . A diferencia del resto, deja atrás el motor de 2.4 litros para adoptar el V6 Pentastar de 3.6 litros , que desarrolla 283 hp y 260 lb-pie. En este caso, sí hay una transmisión automática de seis velocidades, también con modo manual. La EPA anuncia un consumo de 7.2 km/l en ciudad y 10.6 km/l en carretera para esta configuración mecánica.

El equipamiento también crece, aunque con nada que lo vuelva único en el segmento. Ya lleva encendido remoto, navegación, asientos calefactables, sensor de estacionamiento trasero y cámra de reversa, todo por una etiqueta de 553,300 pesos . En prestaciones y espacio puede quedar ligeramente por encima de la media, pero en acabados y equipamiento —sobre todo tecnológico— queda rezagado.

El Dodge Journey se mantiene vigente por espacio, pero nada más

Si necesitas transportar a siete pasajeros, el Dodge Journey es una opción relevante , sobre todo la versión SXT por la relación equipamiento/precio/espacio. Al final del día, por su rango de precios, compite contra la mayoría de los C-SUV del mercado, aunque su longitud ya lo deja cerca de ejemplares de un segmento superior. Mide 4.88 metros.

A lado de la configuración mecánica del Honda CR-V y de su nivel de equipamiento, el Dodge Journey no tiene mucha oportunidad de conquista. Si metemos a la balanza al Nissan X-Trail , que también puede llevar tres filas de asientos, el ejemplar de Dodge se queda atrás al carecer de asistencias de conducción de última generación, como alerta de colisión frontal o control de velocidad crucero adaptativo.

Pitirim of Perm

Saint Pitirim, Bishop of Great Perm , (Vytchegda) was chosen and consecrated to the See of Perm after the suffering and death of St Gerasimus of Perm (d. January 24 1441). Before becoming bishop, Archimandrite Pitirim was head of the Chudov monastery. He later became known as the composer of the Canon to St Alexis, Metropolitan of Moscow ( February 12 ), and also wrote his Life. He is commemorated by the Church August 19 .

As bishop, St Pitirim first occupied himself with establishing friendly relations between the Zyryani and Voguli peoples. He circulated admonitory letters and messages, seeking to defend the Zyryani from pillage. The Voguli leader Asyka however, taking advantage of princely dissention and the remoteness of the bishop from the capital, plundered Christian settlements and killed defenseless people.

Novgorod landowners held lands at the Rivers Vyg and Dvina, suffering death from the constant pillaging. In the year 1445, they marched out against the Voguli and took Asyka captive. The crafty pagan swore friendship to Perm and vowed to harass Christians no longer. Set free, Asyka waited for a convenient moment to attack Ust'-Vym with the aim of killing St Pitirim, to whom he attributed his defeat by the Novgorodians.

During this time St Pitirim was twice in Moscow: in 1447 to address an encyclical to Prince Demetrius Shemyaka, having broken a treaty (it is supposed that the writer was St Pitirim); and again in the year 1448 for the consecration of St Jonah, Metropolitan of Moscow (March 31). Taking advantage of St Pitirim's absence, Asyka again made an attack on a Zyryani settlement near the Pechora, robbing and killing the inhabitants. Not only the Zyryani, but also the Voguli living their nomadic life near the Pechora tributary, had become convinced of the truth of the preachings of St Pitirim, and they had begun to accept Baptism.

Embittered by this, Asyka committed a new crime. On August 19 , 1456 he murdered St Pitirim, when he was out blessing the waters at the point of land formed by the confluence of the Rivers Vaga and Vychegda. The body of the saint remained for 40 days in a grave at the place of his death (since they awaited an answer to the sad news of his death). In spite of the hot weather, decay did not touch him. The saint was buried in the Ust'-Vym cathedral church of the Annunciation next to his predecessor St Gerasimus. The memory of his repose was already entered into a typikon in the year 1522. In the year 1607 the joint commemoration of the three Great Perm holy Hierarchs: Gerasimus, Pitirim and Jonah, was established ( January 29 ). They succeeded one another at the Ust'-Vym cathedral.

Perm: Europe's easternmost city

The city of Perm, located in the Urals foothills, is, geographically speaking, the most easterly city in Europe. Yekaterinburg, which is situated further to the east, beyond the Urals ridge, is located in Asia. Yet, while the whole world thinks that Europe ends at Perm, its citizens are convinced that it begins there.

Perm owes its birth to the mountains that separate Europe from Asia. One of the first copper-smelting works in the Urals was built there in the early 18 th century. As production developed, the settlement grew and Empress Catherine II (the great) soon signed a decree creating the city of Perm around the plant. For centuries, the city developed as an industrial center, so it is not surprising that the working people in Perm welcomed the October Revolution of 1917. In 1940, the city was renamed Molotov, but not for long, as its former name was restored in the late 1950s. Today Perm is a leader of Russian heavy industry.

In recent years, however, the city has been striving to rid itself of its image as Russia’s industrial capital and be recognized as a cultural capital. Can a mighty industrial city, studded with factories, turn overnight into a capital of fashion shows, music and modern arts? The local people are confident that they can do it; the local museum features ancient local artifacts such as wooden idols and bronze animal medallions alongside modern art. Artists and musicians come to Perm to lecture and give master classes and, once every two years, the city hosts the Diaghilev Seasons, a classical festival in memory of the famous ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev. This is not accidental – the guiding spirit of the famous Russian Seasons in Paris lived in Perm with his family for a long time and graduated from the local school. This year, the city had its first ever White Nights multicultural festival, which lasted a whole month. The authorities hoped the festival would attract hundreds of thousands of tourists but in reality there were fewer. This was partly due to poor promotion of the festival events and partly to the lack of a convenient tourist infrastructure, including information centers, cheap hotels, bicycle rentals and even toilets.

Even so, Perm is persevering. Like other major Russian cities, last June Perm opened a pedestrian street, its answer to Moscow’s Arbat. At present, it looks somewhat wild and provincial: a patchy asphalt surface, street vendors with nothing to do, a couple of artisans and a children’s playground. Yet the pedestrian street is already included in the standard sightseeing tour that winds around the center. The tour, called The Green Line, links key historical sights of old Perm such as merchants’ houses, churches and monuments. Not surprisingly, it also includes museums, such as the Perm Museum of Local Lore housed in a sumptuous villa that used to belong to the arts patron Nikolai Meshkov. This imposing building, with its columns and stucco moldings, overlooks the Kama River. Its storerooms and exhibition halls contain all the treasures of the city’s many centuries of history. A little back from the riverbank, the Museum of Perm Antiquities features a vast paleontology collection: skeletons of the ancient lizards that gave their name to one of the Palaeozoic periods and the legendary Perm mammoth. An alternative tourist route, called The Red Line, was inaugurated more recently. The places of the greatest romantic dramas played out in the city are marked in red on the city map.

Works of art and stone monuments are not the city’s only attractions. Because of its unusual history and geographical position, Perm has produced many remarkable personalities, some of whom became legends in their own lifetime.

Take Alexei Bessonov, a well-known local communist, an active blogger and an irrepressible public campaigner. He jogs in the morning and, thanks to his robust health, is ever ready to fight for the ideals of the Communist Party. He has come up with some startling initiatives. For example, he proposed turning the city hall into a pretrial detention centre and he tried to organize guerilla units to oppose the cultural reforms. Bessonov’s activities are hailed by the local media, and he has long been a living legend in the city. You can see him all over the place: In the morning he often jogs through the city’s main streets and, at noon, he can be seen leading a demonstration and carrying a banner in front of government buildings. Another local celebrity is Alexander Zhunev, a street artist who holds degrees in economics and geology. When he painted his first graffiti in 2008, he realized this was what he had been born to do. Now people come from afar to look at his works. If you see a portrait of the poet Sergei Yesenin that is as tall as 10-storey building, or Spongebob Squarepants atop an electrical transformer box, or public phones in the shape of a fish or a cat’s head, you can be sure Alexander Zhunev has been here with his spray paint. And it is a good idea to visit the places that he has visited.

In contrast, Mikhail Shmakov has disliked Perm from the time he was a child. He thought the city was drab and gloomy. To escape the drabness, Shmakov and his wife set out on a voyage around the world. They have already crossed Africa and South America. Having seen half the world, Shmakov now admits that he does not want to leave his home city for good.

“Paradoxically, after visiting thousands of cities, it was brought home to me that I was lucky to have been born in Perm,” Shmakov said. “I have hated Perm all my life but have recently come to like its cozy provincial style and atmosphere of a wilderness.”

The “wilderness” surrounds the city in the shape of thick forests and the deep, dark waters of the Kama, a major river that slashes right through the middle of Perm. Today, though, the city is divided not only by water. One part dreams of turning it into a cultural capital and the other part wants it to be an industrial city, as of old. How to keep both camps happy? Perm is in the midst of stormy processes that will certainly be interesting to watch.
