Scopoderm Information

Scopoderm patches contain a substance called hyoscine hydrobromide, which is one of the most widely used medications to treat travel sickness. This is due to the ease of application, discretion and long treatment time. Hyoscine is absorbed through your skin via the Scopoderm patch. Each patch contains 1.5mg of hyoscine and can be kept on for up to three days.

Scopoderm patches are effective in treating all kinds of motion and travel sickness. They are especially useful when a long treatment time is required, for example on a cruise or coach trip.

When travelling, it is possible to begin to feel travel sick when there is a conflict between what your inner ear can sense (your balance) and what your eyes can see. When this conflict begins it can make you feel unsteady, disorientated and nauseous. Hyoscine works by reducing this conflict in your brain.

Hyoscine blocks receptors called muscarinic (or cholinergic) in the vomiting centre from receiving messages from the vestibular system (the area that senses balance and spatial awareness). This prevents the internal confusion, which causes the feeling of nausea.

Non-Medicinal Alternative for Travel Sickness

Acupressure Bands - are bands that are worn around the wrist. They are designed to apply pressure to a certain point on the inside of your wrist specifically between the two tendons on the inner arm. A positive for the acupressure bands is that there are no adverse side effects, how ever there is little scientific evidence to show that they are an effective treatment for motion sickness. You should be able to purchase this item from most pharmacies.

Scopoderm warnings

It's important to always wash your hands after inserting or removing a Scopoderm patch. You should also try to avoid touching the patch whilst it's on. This is because, if you touch your eyes with hyoscine on your fingers, the substance can temporarily blur your vision.

Also, do not drink alcohol or take other anti-sickness medicines whilst using Scopoderm patches.

Provided that you have applied the patch properly, you can swim, bathe or shower with little risk of it coming off. However, it is best not to stay in the water too long.

Do not cut the patches in an attempt to reduce the dosage. This may release a much larger dose in a short time period.

During your consultation, we will determine whether Scopoderm patches are suitable for you. However, speak to your doctor before using Scopoderm patches if:

• You suffer from any serious gastrointestinal, kidney, liver or bladder disease
• You suffer from epilepsy
• You are pregnant or breast-feeding
• If you have ever had glaucoma
• Have a history of bladder or bowel obstruction
• If you've had a bad reaction to hyoscine, or other anti-sickness medication in the past

Scopoderm patches are not suitable for children less than 10 years old.

You should also inform your doctor, before you buy Scopoderm patches, if you are taking any other medicines.

Scopoderm directions

This medicine works best before you start to feel ill, so it's recommended that you put on a patch 5 to 6 hours before travel. However, you can also use the patch during travel to help reduce nausea.

To ensure that you put on the patch correctly, follow these steps:

• Remove the patch from its seal and peel off the clear, hexagonal plastic backing. Hold the patch by its edge and be careful to avoid touching the sticky side.
• To put the patch on, find a dry, hairless area of skin behind your ear and press the silver-coloured sticky side in place. Hold the patch there and count slowly to ten.
• Next, wash your hands thoroughly.
• When you remove the patch, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards, as well as washing the area of skin where the patch has been.

If the patch comes off accidentally during your journey, throw away the patch, wash the area, as advised above, and put a new patch on behind the other ear.

Each patch lasts for up to 3 days (72 hours). You can use Scopoderm patches for longer journeys – just take the patch off after 3 days and put a new one behind the other ear.

Scopoderm ingredients

Scopoderm patches realease the active ingredient, hyoscine hydrobromide, at a rate of approximately 1mg/72 hours when in contact with the skin.

Scopoderm side effects

As with any medicine, there are potential side-effects. The most commonly reported side-effect is a dryness of the mouth, although this does not last long.

Other side effects include:

• Sleepiness, dizziness, confusion and hallucinations.
• Blurred vision.
• Redness or itching of the skin where a patch has been.

If any of these effects are severe, or if you experience any other side effects, take the patch off and consult a Doctor. Also seek medical assistance if any side effect lasts for over 24 hours, after removing the patch. However, it is rare for the symptoms to persist this long.

Due to the potential side effect of drowsiness, you must not drive or operate machinery whilst wearing a Scopoderm patch.

Scopoderm is a prescription-only medicine used to prevent travel sickness. It is in the form of a simple and discreet patch. This is placed on the skin before travel, and remains for the duration of the journey. Scopoderm can control travel sickness for up to 72 hours. The active ingredient is hyoscine hydrobromide.

Scopoderm patches are a straightforward alternative for those who are unable to swallow tablets.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker is a tablet which restricts the absorption of carbohydrates, preventing weight gain. Normally, complex carbohydrates are digested into glucose and absorbed in the intestine. XLS Medical Carb Blocker prevents this breakdown from happening in the body by blocking the activity of certain digestive enzymes.

XLS Medical Carb Blocker also causes the production of insulin to decrease due to the reduced amount of glucose from carbohydrates. This helps to control everyday food cravings, which also contributes to weight loss.

Scopoderm patches will be most effective if applied about five hours before you begin your journey. It will still have an effect if you do not apply the patch until you begin to feel symptoms.

Remove the clear plastic backing from the patch. Apply the adhesive side to an area of skin behind the ear which is dry and hairless. Press down for ten seconds to ensure the patch is in place. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying or removing a patch.

If your patch unintentionally comes off, wash that area of skin and apply a new patch behind your other ear.

Be careful not to touch the adhesive side of the patch before you place it on your skin.

One Scopoderm patch can control travel sickness for up to 72 hours. For journeys that are longer than this, you can remove one patch after three days and place another one behind the opposite ear.

Keep this product out of the reach of children. Do not store at a temperature higher than 25°C.

Consult your GP if you wish to use Scopoderm patches but suffer from any of the following conditions:

• Kidney problems
• Impaired liver function
• Gastrointestinal disease
• A history of bladder or bowel problems
• An allergy or intolerance of hyoscine

Take care if using this product if pregnant, breastfeeding or elderly.

Scopoderm may interact with other medicines, including some antidepressants, antihistamines or belladonna alkaloids.

Brolene may cause slightly blurred vision. Avoid driving or operating machinery unless your vision is completely clear. Consult your GP if you notice any vision problems while using Brolene.

Scopoderm travel sickness patches contain a substance called hyoscine hydrobromide , which is one of the most widely used medications to treat travel sickness .

Hyoscine is absorbed through your skin via the self adhesive Scopoderm patch. Each patch contains 1.5mg of hyoscine and can be kept on for up to 3 days. Only 1 patch should be used at a time and it must be removed after 3 days and replaced if ongoing treatment is required.

What does it do?

If you experience a dry mouth as a side effect of this medicine you may find that medicines designed to dissolve and be absorbed from the tongue, e.g. Maxalt melts for migraine do not dissolve properly in a dry mouth. To resolve this, drink a mouthful of water before taking melt in the mouth tablets.

Rare but potentially serious side effects

If you experience any of the following, remove the Scopoderm patch immediately and consult a doctor urgently:

• Hyperthermia (overheating).
• Inability to pass urine.
• Confusion, disorientation, less conscious or aware of surroundings.
• Hallucinations - seeing or hearing things that are not there.
• Breathing difficulties.

These are more likely in children and elderly, when Scopoderm patches are being used for long periods and if they are being used for symptoms other than travel sickness.

Other possible side effects

• Sleepiness.
• Blurred vision or other visual disturbance.
• Redness, itching, or irritation of the skin where a patch has been.
• Changes in size of pupils.
• Decreased sweating.

If any of these effects are severe, or if you experience any other side effects, take the patch off and consult a doctor. Also seek medical assistance if any side effect lasts for over 24 hours, after removing the patch. However, it is rare for the symptoms to persist this long.

Due to the potential side effect of drowsiness, you must not drive or operate machinery whilst wearing a Scopoderm patch.

When not to use Scopoderm patches

During a Dr Fox online consultation, we will determine whether Scopoderm patches are suitable for you. However, check with your GP before using Scopoderm patches if:

• You suffer from any serious gastrointestinal, kidney disease, liver disease, or heart disease.
• You suffer from epilepsy.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
• If you have ever had glaucoma.
• Have a history of bladder, prostate problems, pyloric, or bowel obstruction.
• If you've had a bad reaction to hyoscine, or other anti-sickness medication in the past.
• Have ulcerative colitis.
• Have diarrhoea or fever.
• Have Down's Syndrome.
• Have myasthenia gravis.

Do not use Scopoderm patches if you have a high temperature/fever. If you develop a high temperature/fever whilst using a Scopoderm patch, remove the patch and take measures to reduce the fever.

If you are aged over 60 and are not fit and well, you may be more likely to experience dizziness with Scopoderm. Remove the patch and stop using Scopoderm if this happens.

Scopoderm patches should not be used by children less than 10 years old. Dr Fox does not supply medication to under 18s.

Other medications which interact with Scopoderm

If you are taking some other medicines, you may still be able to use Scopoderm, but there are some medication interactions with Scopoderm . Please check and consult your regular doctor if advised.

How and when to take hyoscine hydrobromide - Brand names: Kwells, Joy-Rides, Kwells Kids, Travel Calm, Scopoderm

Always read the information that comes with your medicine.

The instructions may vary, depending on why you're taking hyoscine hydrobromide and whether you're taking tablets or using patches.

Dosage and strength

Pharmacies sell 2 different strengths of hyoscine hydrobromide tablets:

• 150 micrograms (including Kwells Kids and Joy-Rides)
• 300 micrograms (including Kwells and Boots Travel Calm)

Take (or give your child) a dose at least 20 to 30 minutes before starting your journey, or as soon as you start to feel sick when travelling.

Different brands of tablets may have different recommended doses. Check the instructions on the packet for the dose you need to give yourself or your child.

For long journeys, you can repeat the dose every 6 hours.

How to take or use it

Suck or chew the tablets, or swallow them whole with a drink of water.

You can take the tablets with or without food.

Patches for travel sickness

The patches work like a plaster and you stick them on your skin.

• Stick a patch to the skin behind the ear, 5 to 6 hours before the start of your journey (or the evening before you travel).
• Remove the patch at the end of your journey.

For long journeys, you can keep the patch on for up to 72 hours (3 days).

If you're still travelling after 72 hours, remove the first patch and stick a new patch behind the other ear. You can keep this on for another 72 hours if needed.

Do not apply more than 1 patch at a time.

How long to take it for

For travel sickness, you only need to take the tablets or use the patches before and during your journey.

If you take too much

Taking 1 extra dose of hyoscine hydrobromide is unlikely to harm you or your child.

But you may get more side effects, such as a dry mouth or blurred vision.

Taking more than 1 extra dose of hyoscine hydrobromide can be dangerous. In serious cases, you may have a fast heartbeat, you can become unconscious or have a seizure or fit, and you'll need emergency treatment in hospital.

The amount of hyoscine hydrobromide that can lead to an overdose varies from person to person.

Urgent advice: Contact 111 for advice now if:

• you or your child take 2 or more extra doses of hyoscine hydrobromide

Go to 111.nhs.uk or call 111

If you need advice for a child under the age of 5 years, call 111 .

If you need to go to A&E , do not drive yourself. Get someone else to drive you or call for an ambulance.

Take the hyoscine hydrobromide packet or leaflet inside it, plus any remaining medicine, with you.

How to Attach Backpacker Flags

While pins might be great for small satchels or jackets, I don’t recommend pinning things to your backpack as they can easily catch on things and might fall off, or worst get stuck and tear your backpack.

The best option for attaching flags on a backpack is to get patches which can be sewn or ironed onto your backpack.  

If you want to sew on backpack patches as you travel, remember to take a mini sewing kit with you.  Iron-on patches don’t require you to carry any extra equipment, you’ll just need to borrow an iron from your hostel or accommodation as you go.

Alternatively, collect your backpacker flags and patches as you go, and sew them on when you get back home.

Storm Kathleen: Scotland hit by high winds, heavy rain and travel disruption

Flood and wind warnings remain in place, with Sepa warning of ‘real danger to life’ on coastal roads and paths

High winds and heavy rain from Storm Kathleen persisted through Sunday, battering parts of Scotland and Ireland and disrupting travel.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) had 18 regional flood alerts and 37 flood warnings in place in Scotland. They have been in force since Saturday.

The Met Office has also issued a yellow wind warning from 9am on Sunday covering parts of the west and northern Highlands, the Isle of Skye and the Hebrides. It will remain in force until 11:59pm.

Winds as high as 73mph were recorded in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire.

A previous warning stretched from the Scottish Borders to just south of Stirling. It spanned the west coast, throughout much of central Scotland, and ended just short of the east coast.

Janine Hensman, Sepa’s flood duty manager, said: “Across Sunday, we’ll continue to see high tides, storm surges and large waves across coastal areas. This combination is particularly dangerous – especially around high tides. There is real danger to life from wave overtopping, particularly around causeways, coastal roads and paths.

“While the risk is greatest around high tide times, our message is clear: Take extra care if you are near the coast at any point and stay well clear of waves and water. Be careful when travelling around exposed coastal areas and don’t walk or drive through flood water, as there may be hidden hazards.”

She added: “Whilst Storm Kathleen will ease on Sunday evening, another weather system is on the way. Significant flooding from rivers and surface water is possible in southern, central and north-eastern areas on Tuesday, with coastal flooding continuing due to high spring tides.

“Flood alerts and warnings are in place, so stay up to date though our website. We will continue to work with the Met Office to monitor the situation 24/7 and review regional flood alerts and local flood warnings as required.”

The Met Office has warned of potential power cuts, damage to buildings, poor mobile phone coverage and danger to life because of large waves and debris from beaches being thrown on to seafronts. About 34,000 people were left without electricity on Saturday, with a few thousand customers remaining without power overnight, but by Sunday afternoon almost all had had their supply restored.

CalMac, Scotland’s largest ferry operator, cancelled a number of its services and many other ferries were operating on reduced timetables, while others faced potential disruption.

ScotRail also faced a number of disruptions throughout the day, including to its Helensburgh Central and Dumbarton Central services.

However, the services, according to ScotRail, were “starting to return to normal”.

On Saturday, more than 140 flights throughout the UK were cancelled as a result of the storm.

In Ireland, a girl was swept out to sea from the east pier of Dún Laoghaire harbour in County Dublin on Saturday evening. Rescuers were able to pull her out of the water within eight and a half minutes, with a lifeboat volunteer revealing that pockets of air trapped under her coat helped keep her afloat before the rescue.

Andrew Sykes, a volunteer helm with the RNLI, told PA Media that the stormy conditions made the rescue operation difficult.

“With the high winds and storm we were experiencing, with large waves and surge coming off the pier, to get alongside her was extremely difficult,” he said. “She would be pushed one way and we would be pushed another,”

The girl was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Titanic Belfast was forced to close after strong winds damaged part of its roof on Saturday. However, the yellow wind warning covering Donegal, Mayo and west Galway was lifted at 4pm on Sunday.
