Meta is Working on an Airplane Travel Mode for Quest
Airplanes seem like an ideal place to dive into VR, as you can switch out the cramped environment of the cabin for a giant movie theater, or whittle away the hours browsing the web on a massive screen — something that shouldn’t bother your seat mates too much. Although Quest’s tracking is one of the most reliable out there, it still has trouble in moving vehicles like airplanes and cars. Meta is apparently working to fix that.
For anyone who’s tried to use Quest on an airplane, it’s basically only usable when you’ve reached a consistent altitude and direction. When you’re taxiing, banking, taking-off or landing, you’ll quickly find yourself being unwittingly jostled around in VR, making it distractingly unusable. Gain attitude, and you might find yourself falling through the virtual floor.
Responding to X (formerly Twitter) user Andrew Fox, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth says the company is working on a way to make Quest work better for in-flight entertainment.
Is it really not possible to use Quest 3 in passthrough mode on a plane? pic.twitter.com/aIBB0s2MT5 — Andrew Fox (@afoxdesign) January 24, 2024
Here’s Bosworth’s response:
“No, we use an IMU to keep objects localized relative to your headset motion so moving vehicles represent a challenge (when they accelerate in any direction). We also use the cameras, of course, they work together as the IMU is higher frequency but lower accuracy. Working on it!”
The issue is basically the same for any optically-tracked VR headset on the market at this point. However, this hasn’t stopped companies from thinking of clever ways around it. Holoride , an Audi co-founded startup, partnered with HTC to hook its standalone Vive Flow headset into cars using a retrofitting device which accounts for the vehicle’s relative motion, letting users engage with a handful of licensed apps .
In 2021, Meta announced it was attempting something similar in a partnership with BMW , which would more accurately anchor virtual objects by hooking Quest’s tracking system into the car itself. Although the company issued an update on the research project in mid-2023, it’s still unclear when we’ll see it in the company’s consumer VR headsets.
Undoubtedly one of the biggest names to promise a solution to travel woes lately is Apple, as the company announced its $3,500 Vision Pro headset would include a ‘Travel’ mode , which Apple says can be used to “stabilize visuals for use on planes.” How this works is still a mystery at this point, although it’s possible the headset switches to a special tracking mode based purely on visual sensors while ignoring IMUs entirely. It would lead to less accurate tracking overall, but at least be useable in an airplane.
Could Meta be up to something similar? It’s likely. If the company wants to keep core feature parity with Vision Pro, which launches February 2nd, we may see something sooner rather than later. Of course, there’s no timeline on Meta’s efforts just yet, so we’ll be keeping an eye on Bosworth’s Instagram , as he regularly does Q&As there.
Airplane mode was datamined back in August already in v57.
There was recent news that, when a door plug was ripped out of an Alaska Airlines Boing 737 Max mid-flight, luckily only non-human objects were sucked outside. One of them was an iPhone currently plugged in for charging. The cable was ripped off, with the plug still stuck in the phone while it tumbled 16,000ft/4.9km down towards earth.
To everyone’s surprise it survived, landed by the side of a road where someone on a walk found it. And since it was still running and had no screen lock on, he could find out who it belonged to, and determine that it contained travel information and a baggage claim for the flight Alaska 1282 with the missing door.
This led to some interesting discussions about the terminal velocity of small object and the usefulness of protective cases. What stuck most with me was a comment that the phone obviously only survived because it was in Airplane mode, otherwise it would have fallen to the ground like a rock and smashed into a thousand pieces. This highly scientific argument got me thinking that what we need on our still very front heavy HMDs aren’t Airplane Travel modes, but actual Airplane modes, or maybe Air Ballon modes, to compensate for all the weight and make XR a more uplifting experience.
I’ve binge watched “American Gods” on an international flight without a problem, or at least much of one. You have to turn tracking off.
The only real frustration was not being able to use pass through mode. That would be fantastic if they can support that. There were a few times I didn’t know a flight attendant was there, especially as I had to use isolating headphones.
The headset wasn’t really loud enough with the native speakers.
So full support, and support of pass through would be fantastic.

How Timeless Travels works in Pokémon Go
Timeless Travels is the Season-long special research for, unsurprisingly, the Season of Timeless Travels in Pokémon Go.
It was released on Monday 11th December 2023 and, while it hasn't been confirmed by Niantic, we wouldn't be surprised if you must unlock this quest during the Season of Timeless Travels to complete it. Thankfully, this gives you until Friday 1st March 2023 at 10am (local time) to do so.
Once you've unlocked Timeless Travels, you're free to complete it at your own pace though due to being a special research quest and lacking a deadline.
It is important to note, however, that it includes time-gated challenges, which can only be completed by doing specific tasks on successive days. So, if you play on completing Timeless Travels, you must remember to complete these tasks every day or else it might take you longer than you think.
Outside of the time-gated challenges, Timeless Travels works exactly the same as any other research quest in Pokémon Go where you must complete a series of challenges, collecting rewards as you go, until you've completed a quest step. At this point, you can earn the rewards for the overall step and move on to the next one, repeating this cycle until the quest is complete.
Good luck completing the Timeless Travels quest!

Archie returns to Destiny 2 with a trip to the EDZ following the May 7, 2024, weekly reset .
This is the latest in a series of “ Where in the System is Archie ” quests in the wake of the Into the Light update — which are being staggered out week-by-week in the lead up to The Final Shape.
Note this quest expires on the May 14 weekly reset , and will be replaced by another Archie quest in a new location. Provided you complete any Archie quest before the arrival of The Final Shape , you’ll get your hands on the Blue Steel shader, while the lore for all Archie quests will be available from June 4 on.
How to start ‘Where in the EDZ is Archie?’ in Destiny 2
To start the latest “Where is Archie” quest, head to the Tower’s Annex and find the footprints. For future reference, this is where you’ll find the beginning of every Archie quest each week.
You can reach this location by using the southwest-most fast travel point, then traveling straight ahead down the corridor. The paw prints will appear on the ledge to your right.
Investigate the prints and go talk to Ada-1 (found in the Annex proper opposite) to start the latest quest.
Now, head to the EDZ, and speak to vendor Devrim Kay in his usual spot in Trostland’s church. Once done, the search begins.
All Archie EDZ locations
Here is where to find Archie in the EDZ, clue-by-clue.
‘Archie heard about some feathers behind a fireplace. He’s hoping to find a glowing bird’ location
The first clue refers to a fireplace not far from Devrim’s location. Head east from the Trostland church, and you’ll see this building on the corner.
Long time Destiny 2 players will remember this as a key location in the Hawkmoon quest — which is what the glowing bird in the clue refers to.
Leap up to the second floor of this building to find the paw prints in front of the fireplace. Investigate to get the next clue.
Thankfully, the next spot isn’t too far away.
‘Archie heard Guardians have picked up a chill new hobby called “fishing” and went to check it out’ location
You’ll find this location on the south coast of Outskirts. The easiest way to find this is to head to the Winding Cove fast travel point, then go east along the coast to the following point on the map:
Investigate the paw prints for another clue.
It’s time to find a big ship.
‘Archie heard about a “ship full of tanks and space rhinos” and decided to go take a look’ location
This clue refers to Skydock IV, which is in the northwest part of the EDZ. Use the Sunken Isle fast travel point, then head towards the interior of the huge ship to the west.
Just before you enter the ship proper, you’ll spot the paw prints.
Investigate for the final clue.
Time to head to a Beyond Light favorite, The Dark Forest.
‘Archie’s last stop. He heard some Guardians talking about “the place where we reclaimed the Light” and some cool floating rocks there’ location
For this final clue, you need to first head to The Sludge.
From the fast travel point, go west (keeping the wall to your right) and you’ll soon notice a path leading north, taking you through a stream and into some caves.
Follow the water until you come across a jammer. It blocks your path and has an on-screen icon, so you shouldn’t miss it.
Investigate the base to disable the jammer. Doing so opens up a Taken portal. Leap inside. You now repeat this process — finding and disabling the jammers, fighting or avoiding enemies as you go — until you reach an arena with Archie and a handful of foes.
The aim here is to take down the shielded Centurion. With enough damage, more jammers will come online, which require disabling before the Centurion can be fought again.
Once done, Archie is free. Offer “pawsitive reinforcement” (Bungie’s words, not ours — we cannot take credit), then revisit Ada back in the Tower to complete the quest.
As well as 10 Trophy of Bravery — useful for getting more Brave weapons — you’ll also receive Devrin’s mug. Whether you keep it is up to you!
Remember, another “where is Archie” quest will appear next week following the weekly reset . Until then, if you’re looking for more to do in the Into the Light update, you can take on Pantheon bosses , complete “ The Whisper ,” find Oracle locations , and upgrade Whisper of the Worm with Taken Blights .
The next level of puzzles.
Take a break from your day by playing a puzzle or two! We’ve got SpellTower, Typeshift, crosswords, and more.

Who should (and shouldn't) get the United Quest card?
Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .
One of the most notable credit card launches of 2021 so far is the New United Quest Card.
United's credit card lineup has now expanded from three to four, with the Quest card finding itself in a bit of a sweet spot. This mid-tier product straddles the line between the $95-per-year (waived the first year) United Explorer Card and the $525-per-year United Club Infinite Card.
Interested in more credit card news and advice from The Points Guy? Sign up for our daily newsletter.
The Quest card comes in with a $250 annual fee and a plethora of perks for semi-frequent United flyers. Best of all, the current offer is a whopper of a bonus: up to 100,000 bonus United miles .
First, you can earn 80,000 bonus United miles after $5,000 in spending in the first three months and then another 20,000 miles after a total of $10,000 in spending in the first six months of account opening. Altogether, those 100,000 miles are worth $1,300, according to TPG valuations , making it one of the most generous sign-up bonuses on the market today.
Beyond the initial sign-up bonus, let's dig a little deeper to see who should -- and who shouldn't -- get the United Quest card.
Key benefits
Up to 100,000 miles may be enough of a reason to get you on board (pun intended) to this new United and Chase offering. However, the Quest card also has other perks that will likely make you want to hold onto it for the long run.
$125 credit: Each anniversary year, cardholders will receive a $125 annual United purchase statement credit that will help offset the $250 annual fee. Assuming you will put the full amount to use, that effectively drops the annual fee from $250 to $125. We should note that the terms indicate the $125 credit does not earn any United miles.
Up to 10,000 miles back: Automatically get 5,000 United miles back into your account after taking a United award flight — up to two times per anniversary year. That means, if you take two award flights per year, you'll get 10,000 MileagePlus miles back. According to TPG valuations , those 10,000 miles are worth $130. Between those two perks, you've already more than covered the cost of the annual fee.
Related: What's the best United card for you?
Checked bag benefit: Two free checked bags for the cardholder and a companion on the reservation
Boarding and upgrade privileges: Priority boarding and complimentary space-available upgrades when flying on award tickets if you have United elite status
Other perks:
- 25% back on United inflight purchases (includes Wi-Fi, food and beverages)
- No foreign transaction fees
- Up to $100 credit for Global Entry/TSA PreCheck every four years
- Trip cancellation/interruption insurance and trip delay reimbursement
- Purchase protection
Both the $125 credit and the 10,000 MileagePlus miles (as a rebate) are unique card benefits that help offset the Quest's $250 annual fee. Meanwhile, the card offers the first and second checked bag free, a benefit that is only found on the more expensive $525-per-year United Club Infinite Card.
The other perks — such as 25% back on United inflight purchases, no foreign transaction fees , a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit and trip protection — are also found on both the United Club Infinite and United Explorer Card.
Bonus categories
The United Quest card has a fairly broad array of bonus categories. You'll earn 3x on United purchases and 2x on all other travel (including Star Alliance purchases), select streaming services and restaurants .
Here's how that compares with the two other United cards that have an annual fee.

Who should get the United Quest card
If you've decided you want a United card, let's narrow down why the United Quest might be the best fit for you.
You fly United semi-frequently
There are key differences between the United Explorer, new United Quest and United Infinite cards.
In more simple terms, the Explorer card fits the "occasional United flyer" once or twice per year mold, Quest cardholders fit the "semi-frequent United flyer" category and most Infinite cardholders are "frequent United flyers" who enjoy lounge access.
Taking a deeper dive into the benefits, however, show that the Quest card is (mostly) a superior card to the Explorer. However, you need to fly United at least several times per year to really make the card worth it.
The only tangible advantage that the Explorer card offers is two, one-time United Club passes annually and of course, a lower $95 annual fee, waived the first year.
But for semi-frequent United flyers, you can easily offset the Quest card's $250 annual fee. First, the $125 credit should be easy to use since it's applied as an automatic statement credit as you make United purchases on the card. To take full advantage of the Quest card's perks, you should plan to redeem United miles at least twice per year (to get up to 10,000 miles back).
Finally, if you are a heavy packer -- and ever plan to check two bags -- the Quest card should be on your list.
Who shouldn't get the United Quest card
You want united club lounge access.
The United Quest card does not come with any lounge privileges and you don't get any guest passes.
If you want access to United Club lounges, the Quest is likely not a good fit for you.
Instead, consider the United Infinite card. The perennial perk of the Infinite Card is a United Club membership , which typically costs $650 per year for a general United MileagePlus member. Instead, you can pay $525 per year and get access to United Clubs for the primary cardholder and two adult companions (or one adult and any children under the age of 21) for as long as you hold the card.
You're over 5/24
In order to be approved for any Chase card subject to 5/24 -- including the United Quest -- you cannot have opened five or more personal credit cards across all banks in the last 24 months. If you're over 5/24, consider a card from another issuer.

You don't value United miles
If you don't personally consider United miles as a worthwhile currency, then the United Quest probably doesn't make sense for you. Instead, you can look into a transferable points card , such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, that offers more redemption flexibility.
Bottom line
For those that plan to fly United as travel reemerges again, the United Quest card is a terrific, mid-tier option. The $125 United credit and up to 10,000 points back per year goes far in making the $250 annual fee worth it, especially since these are unique perks that aren't duplicated on the other United credit cards.

Caitlin Clark, Indiana Fever embrace notion of using charter flights for WNBA travel

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark already is one of the WNBA’s most recognizable players.
So when she made her first road trip last week, the league’s top overall draft pick had to adapt. Instead of loading her bag directly onto a plane and boarding, Clark found herself traversing the same lines and waits as everyone else at the Dallas airport — just like most of the league’s players.
It’s a hassle she wouldn’t mind avoiding on future trips and now league commissioner Cathy Engelbert is working on a solution.
One day after Engelbert told a group of sports editors that she’s trying to find regular charter flights for all 12 WNBA teams, Clark and her new teammates embraced the move.
“I think you just have to be aware of where you are,” Clark said after Wednesday’s practice. “You travel with security, which is nice. It’s just different from college where you put your bag on the plane, hop on the plane and then you’re off. But like (here) you’re waiting at baggage claim, you’ve got to go through the normal security with everybody else. For me, it was my first time doing it. It wasn’t terrible. I just went about my business and kept my head down.”
Clark went on to score 21 points in her pro debut , a 79-76 loss.
But her star power has only fueled a debate that took center stage last season when Phoenix Suns star Brittney Griner was confronted by a man who started asking questions as she walked through an airport. The incident became so heated that the man was tackled and law enforcement was called.
League officials called the man’s actions “inappropriate” and “unfortunate.”
It spurred a leaguewide debate over player safety with some veteran stars asking that league officials do more, including charter flights. And now, with one of the most heralded rookie classes entering the league, Engelbert wants to take action even if she doesn’t have a defined timetable for when it could happen.
Fever coach Christie Sides also remembered sleeping in an airport while working with the Chicago Sky because of several delays before the flight was eventually canceled. She said the team took a 6 a.m. flight and played later that night.
For those reasons, it can’t start soon enough for those who have been around the league for years — or for Clark, who has been driving WNBA ticket sales upward after spending her last two seasons at Iowa driving a substantial increase in television ratings.
“I’m thankful at whatever point that happens, that would be great for us. It will make recovery easier, it will make travel easier,” Clark said. “It just makes life a lot easier for a lot of people, but also it’s just something a lot of people have deserved for years and years.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene faces the beginning of the end after failed run at Mike Johnson
Greene’s herculean displays of vacuousness always had an end point, even in a political party as uniquely absurd and useless as one helmed by trump..
It appears Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has finally out-stupid-ed herself.
That’s no small task. Or maybe it’s a task so small that it can’t be seen with the naked eye. Regardless, Greene’s flailing and ultimately failed attempt to oust Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson for the crime of governing failed miserably Wednesday, bringing a chorus of boos down on the congresswoman and likely marking the end of her preposterous moment in American politics.
Greene read her resolution to give Johnson the boot, saying: “Now, therefore be it resolved that the office of the speaker of the House of Representatives is hereby declared to be vacant.”
To which an unlikely coalition of Republicans and Democrats said, via a 359-43 vote to dismiss Greene’s nonsense : “That’s about enough of that, you goofball.”
Greene's anger at Johnson started when he dared to pass legislation
The mess started after Johnson got his unruly GOP coalition to join Democrats and pass a much-needed foreign aid package that helped Ukraine and other American allies.
Apparently, “doing things” was a bridge too far for Greene, so she spent the past few weeks threatening Johnson’s speakership and babbling on right-wing podcasts about how Republicans were caving to Democrats and blah, blah, blah.
Trump trial update: Stormy Daniels spills details about alleged Trump affair. How will they spin this one?
But the Georgia lawmaker found few Republican friends who would follow her down this path, which clearly surprised her.
Only in today's GOP could a ridiculous figure like Greene gain power
Greene’s approach to politics – loud, wrong and, if that doesn’t work, louder and wronger – had somehow managed to turn her into a Republican of influence. It was, in the most literal sense imaginable, dumb luck.
Donald Trump’s rampant dishonesty and penchant for being the worst person in the room made boorish, bloviating behavior something Republicans aspired to, and few have proved better at it than Greene. She is, in all ways, ridiculous, a caricature of a person who shouldn’t be allowed near any lever of power.
Republicans still lying about voting: Trump and the RNC want slow counting of mail ballots to target Biden supporters
And yet, she’s in the halls of power, and she’s on congressional committees and Trump seems to like her (because she lies for him) and … well … things just don’t seem to make a lot of sense these days.
But there was always a problem with someone like her, someone so good at parroting Trump’s utter disregard for facts or knowledge.
Greene's tried to out-Trump Donald Trump, and it didn't go well
That problem, in today’s GOP, is there can only be one person who gets away with lying and bullying and punishing people for no good reason, and that one person is Trump.
He – the MAGA king – didn’t want Greene trying to oust Johnson . As much as Trump loves Greene’s obsequiousness and pliable morality, her motion to vacate was a nonstarter. It’s too close to the election, and an internal revolt would make House Republicans look chaotic, which they are.
What Trump says goes, so Greene found herself a virtual loner on a quixotic quest to do the noisiest, dumbest thing possible.
Apparently incapable of not making a scene, she ignored Trump and pushed ahead , and on Wednesday finally – after several years of atrociousness – she was seen as the powerless, outmatched showboater she is.
Greene's magnificently malevolent moment may have peaked
Greene’s Herculean displays of vacuousness always had an endpoint, even in a political party as uniquely absurd and useless as one helmed by Trump.
In 2021 , she slid, hand-in-glove, into a Republican Party that has an appetite for stupidity. But like a dull-witted Icarus, she has now flown too close to the dumb.
Greene won’t go away, but her influence in the party she so eagerly sought to make worse will wane.
She has seen the limits of Trump’s support, and her colleagues now have the permission structure necessary to shun the unserious monster they created.

LPGA: Nelly Korda explains why historic 6th straight win likely not in the cards
Nelly Korda will try to make history this week by winning her 6th consecutive tournament at the Cognizant Founders Cup.

Share All sharing options for: LPGA: Nelly Korda explains why historic 6th straight win likely not in the cards
Nelly Korda has had quite a year already.
She has won five consecutive tournaments and clinched her second major title at The Chevron Championship . This past Monday, Korda even attended The Met Gala , where she walked the red carpet alongside pop culture’s finest.
Now, her attention shifts to the Cognizant Founders Cup, where she looks to win in her sixth straight start in historic fashion. Nobody in LPGA history—not even Annika Sorenstam —has accomplished that feat.
But Korda explained why another victory is likely not in the cards in her pre-tournament press conference.
“If I’m being honest, I have not thought about [this tournament] at all because I’ve had so much going on those two weeks,” Korda said.
“Then obviously, Monday I had The Met, so I haven’t had too much time to think about it.”
In addition, Korda has not played her best in New Jersey, which also hosted the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship one year ago. Korda missed the cut at Baltusrol by six shots after totaling an 11-over score through 36 holes.
She also missed the cut at last year’s Cognizant Founders Cup, which saw Jin Young Ko prevail.
“My track record hasn’t been the greatest in New Jersey,” Korda added.
“I’m really just trying to take it one shot at a time and see how it goes. This golf course is tough. It’s very, very narrow off the tee. The rough is very penalizing. And it’s wet this year, so it’s even worse.”
Playing courses in the Northeast in the spring always proves challenging. Weather is always a factor, and to nobody's surprise, temperatures will hover around the low 60s this weekend in New Jersey. Friday and Sunday’s forecast calls for rain, too.
That means the golf ball will not travel as far as it would in sunny and dry conditions, making it much more challenging on the field.
Yet, Korda cannot get herself to look too far ahead.
“I just cannot get too ahead of myself; I have to take it one shot at a time,” Korda added.
“As boring as it sounds or as many times as you’re going to hear me say it, that’s the motto, and I’m going to stick to it.”
That motto has worked so far in 2024, and she should not shy away from it this week in New Jersey. Despite that, she gave plenty of reasons as to why her winning streak would end.
