Easter Jeep Safari brings tens of thousands to Moab this week

safari jeep display

MOAB, Utah — The 58th annual Easter Jeep Safari returns to Moab this week.

The annual event put on by Red Rock 4-Wheelers brings more than 20,000 Jeep owners to the Southern Utah city for nine days of trail rides.

Moab has a very special relationship with the cars, said Brandon Girmus, the senior brand manager for Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator.

“A lot of these trails were actually created for uranium prospecting and for cattle ranching, and a lot of those prospectors, a lot of those cattle ranchers, they were using Jeep vehicles from the 1940s, from the 1950s,” he said. “They created those trails, and really we’re kind of continuing that tradition.”

There is a Jeep display at Walker Drug on Main Street in Moab, where people can check out the new car models and sign up for trail rides through this Friday.

Retro-Modern Jeep Wrangler, Gladiator, Wagoneer Concepts Debut at 2024 Easter Jeep Safari

Should jeep's new concepts make it to production we weigh in.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari concept group shot

 • Jeep will bring four new concepts to the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari.
 • All pay homage to Jeep's heritage in varying ways.
 • Easter Jeep Safari will have Wrangler, Gladiator and Wagoneer-based concepts on display.

For nearly 60 years the Easter Jeep Safari has been a celebration of all things Jeep. Enthusiasts from around the country make the trek to the otherworldly beautiful terrain of Moab, Utah, to test their vehicles' mettle — and sometimes metal — against some of the toughest trails you can imagine.

As one of the more enthusiast-aware brands, Jeep knows a good thing when it sees it, and has for years used EJS as an opportunity to showcase its thinking on the future of its products. It’s a sensible move since the vehicles are in their natural environment and surrounded by lovers of the brand. Plus, Jeep itself has a reputation of doing testing at Moab when nobody is looking, so it’s already a natural proving ground for the company.

This year, Jeep showed off four new concepts at EJS — two based on the Wrangler and one each on the Gladiator and Wagoneer — and we weigh in on whether they should remain in the concept stage or if we think they should wind up in dealerships.

Jeep Willys Dispatcher concept front three-quarter

Willys Dispatcher

The Willys Dispatcher Concept splits the difference between retro and modern in a fun way. Willys, as you may know, was the name of the company that originally built Jeeps in World War II and into the 1950s before it was absorbed by Kaiser, and the Willys name was eventually dropped. Today, Willys is a trim level in the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator lineup that adds off-road capability at a price lower than the Rubicon or Mojave variants.

The Willys Dispatcher, however, is a different beast. It starts with a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid but goes back in time from there in the style of '50s-vintage “flat fender” Jeeps. The retro-styled steel wheels are wrapped in equally retro skinny tires, and the old-school front bumper houses a modern Warn winch with a classic design. “WILLYS” is embossed into the hood, and the whole thing is covered in a vintage-feeling Element 115 Green paint. The Dispatcher’s interior is largely modern, but with houndstooth cloth inserts on distressed leather seats, with more houndstooth accents on the dash. For a real retro vibe, the headrests have been removed for a “low-back" feel.

This is a neat-looking concept, but should it go into production? The embossed Willys logo is unquestionably cool, as is the color, and there’s a place in our hearts for the houndstooth as well. But we’re not sure the skinny-tired retro vibe has enough pull to warrant a full production run. We’d say, add the color, and definitely make the embossed logo standard on Willys trims, but otherwise this is a tough sell.

Jeep Low Down concept front three-quarter

The Low Down concept is essentially a Jeep hot rod, and it actually pays homage to another concept from 15 years ago called the Wrangler Lower 40. The idea is to add ground clearance and capability by increasing wheel size but otherwise casting the usual body-lift tricks aside so that the center of gravity stays low for added stability.

To keep the race-car vibe, Jeep started with a Wrangler Rubicon 392 for sweet V8 power and kept the suspension stock, although the axles have both been replaced with Dana 60s. The front and rear bumpers are replaced, and the tires are giant 42-inchers covered by custom fenders. One of the coolest touches is the clear hood bulge, through which you can see the big V8 engine. The paint color is called Poison Apple, and the white 392 stripe on the side evokes classic '60s race cars. The interior is the same vibe, with no screens at all, a big “392” on the dash, and seats with a cool mesh and grommet pattern that evokes vintage racers.

We can’t really see this one making it to production in any meaningful way. Don’t get us wrong — it’s very cool, we love the color, and the idea of keeping the center of gravity low while still adding clearance and capability is a good one. It’s just a little too concepty. Complain as we may about screens on everything, we’re all pretty addicted, and a modern vehicle without them feels a little too retro for us.

Jeep High Top concept front

The Jeep High Top Concept is a good reminder that not everything in the '70s was awful. Based off a 2024 Gladiator Rubicon, the black upper parts look terrific contrasted with the copper-colored Ginger Snap paint, and the 40-inch wheels are the right kind of oversized. The Warn winch in the bumper is also a nice touch. The half doors are slick, but even better is the step integrated into the rock slider that pops down when you open them. The bed has been converted into a storage area, with a slide-out drawer and a hard deck above. Inside it’s mostly the same as what you’d find in a 2024 Gladiator, with the exception of the quilted leather seats with the Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) logo embossed in the seat back.

But it’s that JPP logo that’s the key on why Jeep doesn’t need to bother making this one because, in a way, you can do it yourself. The fenders and the cool bed accessories are from JPP, and most of the rest of the High Top is made from off-the-shelf parts. In a way it makes the High Top truest to the vibe of the Easter Jeep Safari, building a concept from mostly available parts that could be reproduced if you wanted to. The '70s paint scheme? Well, we could see a limited run of that from the factory.

Jeep Vacationeer concept front

Vacationeer

The fact that Jeep had the audacity to reintroduce the Grand Wagoneer brand without honest wood paneling is, well, shocking. This concept brings it back, and adds a lot of other '60s and '70s nostalgia on top. First, the color — which Jeep calls Spearminted — is spot on and has a very '60s vibe to it, especially with the white contrast on the roof, door handles, mirror caps and 18-inch wheels. Those wheels add about 1.5 inches of extra lift, mandating larger wheel openings and body-color flares. Then there’s the wood accent, meant to evoke the wood strip of Wagoneers from the late '60s and early '70s, rather than the full wood panels of the later '70s and early '80s. It isn’t real wood but is 3D textured, and if anything we think it could be a bit bigger. The retro touches blend with modern features like the new front end with its integrated winch and laser foglamps; we couldn't confirm if they make a '70s-era “pew pew” sound when turned on.

Kyle James Patrick designed the fabric inserts on the leather seats, and Jeep liked it so much it used the same fabric on throw pillows in the rear, and on the pillowcases and comforter in the climate-controlled carbon-fiber rooftop tent. Jeep needs to sell accessories with this fabric, which isn’t just a retro plaid but is also festooned with profiles of vintage Jeeps. Jeep removed the second and third rows of this Grand Wagoneer and filled the rear with the aforementioned throw pillows, along with some vintage '70s-era Samsonite hard-sided luggage, complete with destination stickers. There’s even a hole in the roof to access the tent, effectively making the Vacationeer a two-person camper.

OK, if we come back to reality, there’s a lot here that could be made in the real world on a limited-edition model. Jeep would obviously need to keep all three rows of seats but upholster them in that cool cloth. Put the Spearminted paint into production, and make the wood stripe an option. That new front bumper is also pretty sweet, especially the laser (pew! pew!) foglights.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari concept group shot

Edmunds says

At the end of the day, none of these concepts are ready for production without some serious alterations. But that's the nature of concept cars. We can easily envision elements of all four of these concepts on the showroom floor someday, be it the color schemes, interior treatments or some of the accessories.

The good news is that for the most part any of these could be built out by an enthusiastic owner. OK, we're not saying you should take a Sawzall to the roof of your Grand Wagoneer, but within reason any of these are buildable, or at the very least, can serve as inspiration for spirited owners.

With all that said, yes, Jeep should totally make a version of the Vacationeer.

Official Photos! Check Out the 2022 Easter Jeep Safari Prototypes

safari jeep display

The 56th annual Easter Jeep Safari will be loaded with a ton of one-off Jeep concepts – and we will be driving every single one!

For well over a decade, TFL Studios has attended the Easter Jeep Safari, and this year looks mighty exciting. We finally get to display photos of many of the concepts that will be on hand. The Jeep Safari started in 1967 as a one-day trail ride. Since then, it’s exploded into a multi-day Jeep-o-Palooza event. For many years, Jeep has brought concepts to the event for the press to play with.

One of the best ways to connect with Jeep designers is to actually have access to them, and their creations. Sometimes, it’s just folly with vehicles that are just built for a laugh. Still, many of these creations point to potential future product, parts and/or themes. On top of that, we to see a ton of upcoming “official” parts and accessories deployed on these concepts. At times, the Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) and Mopar folks will listen to our thoughts about these components for (possible) production.

For us, the most exciting part is driving the concepts.

Here’s an overview of many of the concepts that will be on hand at the 2022 56th Annual Easter Jeep Safari:

safari jeep display

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept

Last year, we got to drive the first Magneto concept and the Jeep Wrangler Magneto 2.0 Concept improves upon the original. This new concept is more powerful and capable than the previous concept. The Magneto 2.0 has a 3-inch lift, 40-inch tires and a wheelbase that’s been stretched 12-inches. Custom components like a unique drive shaft, and carbon-fiber body components are augmented with JPP off-road components.

According to Jeep, the Magneto 2.0’s powertrain is a beast:

 • Propulsion: Peak amperage has more than doubled to 600 amps. The Magneto 2.0 makes 625 horsepower and 850 lb.-ft., which is more than three-times the torque output of last year’s concept. With new calibration, 0 to 60 mph can happen in as little as two (2) seconds.
 • Custom-built axial flux electric motor that operates up to 5,250 rpm
 • Six-speed manual transmission returns, yet you can get true “one pedal” EV driving feedback. First gear ratio in the manual transmission has changed from 5.13 to 3.36.
 • The Jeep Magneto 2.0 concept has four lithium-ion battery packs distributed throughout the chassis. Combined power of the 70 kWh power, runs an 800-volt system,
 • Developed for race cars, the inverter converts DC power to AC for the electric motor.

Loaded with new graphics and an updated exterior look, the Jeep Magneto 2.0 concept gives us a little hint as to what might be possible with an all-electric Wrangler. Remember: Jeep promised an all-electric Wrangler in the near future!

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk PHEV Concept

What you are looking at is a very-close-to-production Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe. Sure, it’s not official – hence the “concept” part of the name, but we are pretty sure it’s coming. That’s a good thing, because it looks phenomenal. At least I feel it’s much better looking than the matured design initially struck me.

The Grand Cherokee Trailhawk PHEV concept has two electric motors and a 400-volt battery pack. On top of that, it has a 2.0-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. An eight-speed, TorqueFlite automatic transmission is the only option, and it feeds all-four 20-inch wheels, covered in 33-inch BFG Mud Terrain tires. It’s equipped with Jeep’s Quadra-Lift air suspension that has a sway-bar disconnect.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, which this concept is based on delivers up to 56 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). It can go up to 25 miles on electricity alone.

safari jeep display

The concept boasts a custom Industrial Blue exterior, along with signature 4xe Lagoon Blue tow hooks and glare-proof black-and-blue matte Trailhawk hood decal. Adding to its adventuresome appearance is a custom roof rack with integrated tie downs, black painted Rhino Liner roof for added durability, custom fog light bezels with quad LED projector fog lamps and custom vinyl side graphics for protection against debris. Mopar rock rails add further protection against nature’s less forgiving elements. The interior incorporates custom saddle-colored upholstered seats with “Rodney” houndstooth inserts. The seats also feature the signature 4xe Trailhawk badge and Surf Blue stitching. Stellantis

Jeep ’41 Concept

Almost every year, the eggheads at Jeep design pay homage to WW2 Willys Jeeps, and the Jeep ’41 Concept is a slick interpretation. The designers opted to use a Wrangler 4xe as the basis, and built something special. The concept sits on a JPP two-inch lift kit, 35-inch mud-terrain tires and 17-inch (Fifteen52) wheels painted in D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green.

The concept’s exterior color, including wheel flares and mirror caps, is decorated in an olive D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green finish, with black powder-coated steel bumpers, Warn winch and JPP bumper hoop. The retro trim cap accentuates a tan soft-top, while JPP half doors offer an enhanced open-air experience to let even more of the outside in. A custom stenciled graphics package from the Jeep Graphic Studio and accent-colored tow hooks are the finishing touches fit for a five-star general. Stellantis

safari jeep display

Inside the ’41 concept is a retro shifter with a customized shifter cap from the Jeep Graphic Studio, along with canvas-covered seats that feature digital camo inserts and Serafil 1043 stitching. A Rhino-lined heavy texture floor in D.R.A.B. ‘41 matte green adds durability. ‘41 matte green and the cluster features a custom Willys retro graphic. Stellantis

2021 SEMA Concepts will be there too!

Three concepts that popped up at the 2021 SEMA show will make an appearance as well! The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Concept, Jeep Wrangler Overlook concept and the Kaiser Jeep M725 concept will be on hand. Check out ( this ) article to get the technical information about those vehicles.

Jeep teases a gaggle of Easter Jeep Safari concepts

A willys embraces the past, something orange will embrace big air.

safari jeep display

Jeep's preparing to go back to the future – and the past – for the 58th Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah, later this month. A couple of teasers on Instagram and Facebook hint at what's headed to the red rocks. On Insta, senior manager Chris Piscitelli mentioned themes of paying homage to the past with "the scene of what the 1950s looked like through our eyes," celebrating current and future powertrains, and the rowdy, racy nature of Wranglers of yore. Thanks to him, we know there's going to be at least a couple of Wrangler builds, a Gladiator build, and "even one of our bigger SUVs," which we're going to guess is a Grand Cherokee , but a modded Grand Wagoneer could be the perfect rock crawling school bus .

And get ready for big color . Piscitelli mentioned it, Stellantis teaser images foreshadow it, and a few pics on Facebook show it off. The first tease could lean into the "mission-capable" description in the automaker's press release, done up in a military green we don't recognize from Jeep's color palette and showing off an embossed "WILLYS" along the side of the hood. The artwork image superimposes a 1945 advert for car shoppers to consider a Jeep for the home now that the war was over, touting "A revolutionary vehicle for a thousand jobs" and suggesting a buyer could "Use it as a truck , use it as a tractor, use it as a runabout, use it as a mobile power unit." Since the vehicle in the photo is a Wrangler 4xe – based on the plug-in panel aft of the hood – we're betting a part of this build is using the on-board battery to power various accessories.

The second artwork image is of what we suspect is a Wrangler 392 in Firecracker Red with a white stripe running vertically up the fenders and across the cowl, plus some seriously stout, arch-filling rubber.

From Facebook, we see what could be a Gladiator or maybe a shortened, two-door Wrangler, on a lift. A third bold take with a bright orange paint job, this one's your desert racer. It's got a skull and pistons motif on the fenders, spotlights where the mirrors would normally be, a roll bar behind the cab, the word "EVO" on the skid plate, and a chunky set of shocks with more travel than a frequent flier.

We have a feeling Jeep's talk of future powertrains could be reserved for the bigger SUV. The festivities aren't far away, the Jeep Easter Safari taking place from March 23-31. There's a chance we might get the usual early preview from the brand's Detroit studio before the drive out west.

2023 Easter Jeep Safari Means 7 Cool New Concepts

Seven EJS concepts include the last Magneto concept, the first Grand Wagoneer concept, and loads of cool new ideas, parts, and just plain fun stuff from Jeep.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

For Jeepers, this is the best time of the year. Spring has arrived, and so has the Easter Jeep Safari (EJS). And with EJS comes this year’s crop of incredible concepts and product previews from Jeep. Every year, the brand manages to outdo itself, and this year is no different.

EJS is a week-long celebration of all things Jeep. Held since 1963, more than 20,000 people attended the event last year. It’s not an official Jeep brand event, but the company makes the trek to Moab along with its fans each year to celebrate the community.

This year, Jeep is bringing seven new concept vehicles to EJS — five that are like no Jeep on the road and two that hint at OEM upgrades that are likely to come to market soon.

2023 EJS Jeep Concepts

Now, let’s dive right into the 2023 EJS Jeep concepts.

Jeep Wrangler Magneto 3.0 Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

This is Jeep’s third kick at the all-electric concept Wrangler can. Magneto 3.0 is also the last Magneto, Jeep said. Because by next year, there will be a production electric Jeep, the Recon . And Jeep’s head of design Mark Allen said that the company will be having a go at modifying that one as soon as possible.

Magneto 3.0 still has plenty of cool upgrades. Starting with a 2-door Wrangler Rubicon, Jeep cut the roof and stretched the door openings. The front door opening is now six inches longer, and the cool new B-pillar was pushed more than two inches rearward to fit the roll bar.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

The custom-built electric motor has two settings. Mild, with 285 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, and Maximum, that boots power to 650 horses and torque to 900 pound-feet. That torque figure is 50 higher than last year, and the power is still multiplied by a 6-speed manual gearbox taken from a Dodge Hellcat and then beefed up even more.

Seventy kilowatt-hours of battery are scattered in four packs around the EV. This year’s software updates give it 20 percent more range, though Jeep says this isn’t a range and charge speed exercise. It’s about using electricity to make a better off-road Jeep.

Dynatrac 60 front and 80 rear axles are fitted with 5.38:1 gearing. This year Jeep has added a new one-pedal “aggressive hill descent mode” to take full advantage of what the electric driveline can offer.

The electric motor turns 40-inch mud-terrain tires on 20-inch beadlock wheels. Magneto 3.0 has a custom 3-inch lift to make those meaty tires fit.

Jeep Scrambler 392 Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Jeep has built lightweight concepts for Easter Jeep Safari before. Concepts like Pork Chop, Stitch, and 4-Speed trimmed as much as half a ton from the Jeeps they were based on.

Scrambler 392 started as a 4-door Wrangler Rubicon 392 but was transformed into a 2-door. Jeep designers fitted rear bodywork from a Gladiator for a long-bed 2-door look. Then they laid back the windshield and lowered the roof, giving the rear all-new bodywork.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Under the paint, much of that bodywork is carbon fiber. The side blades, roof, and door openings are all made from the composite. The same goes for the front fenders and the hood. That helps Jeep cut 450 pounds from the Scrambler 392 concept, helping it get up and over rocks and other obstacles.

The new fenders and lightweight bumpers help the 40-inch tires fit in the arches. The 20-inch wheels and the tow hooks are painted in Brass Monkey, just like a standard Wrangler 392.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

When Jeep launched Tuscadero Pink in 2021, it expected around 3,000 orders. Turns out that Jeep really underestimated its customer base. The company had to extend pink production by a month and still couldn’t meet all of the demand.

Instead of another year of Tuscadero, Jeep is bringing a new pink to market. The chromatic magenta hue doesn’t have a name just yet, and it will still change a bit before production, but this Jeep is meant to get feedback on the brand’s next production pink. Let them know how you feel.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

The other show-off on this Jeep is the new AccuAir air suspension kit. The kit, which is also on the Scrambler 392, can lift the Jeep from 1.5 to 5.5 inches on demand. Pop it up to get through deep water or over a tough rock, or drop it to duck under overhangs. Or lower it so it’s easier to get in and out.

Other small changes include a 20th Anniversary grille and custom graphics. It wears 37-inch tires on wheels from AEV , as well as front and rear bumpers from the off-road accessory company.

1978 Jeep Cherokee 4xe Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Jeep builds resto-mod concepts to try and inspire enthusiasts. The Cherokee 4xe is a 1978 Jeep Cherokee SJ that the company found on Craigslist for $2,500. It had a rough body and no engine, but Jeep didn’t want that old AMC mill anyway. Sorry, Jeep purists.

The Cherokee body was dropped on the chassis of a 2022 Wrangler Rubicon 4xe . That took some bodywork, like altering the wheel arches. Jeep’s designers and engineers added a ton of resto-mod-style upgrades, too, with plenty of new sheet metal. The front bumper is from a Wrangler Rubicon, and the rear is from a Gladiator.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Jeep’s intent was a modern take on the “Good Vibes” campaign Dodge ran in the 1970s, and it is right on the mark.

The rear of the Cherokee is stripped, and it has a graffiti-look ceiling. The glass is all gone to give it an open-air feel. The seats are wonderfully ’70s, there is a gas cap from an AMC Gremlin, and the dashboard is home to an 8-track player. Which, unfortunately, isn’t hooked up.

Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

The first Easter Jeep Concept based on the new Grand Wagoneer is a bit of an overlanding condo.

Jeep’s team got hold of a RedTail Overland Skyloft hard-sided rooftop tent. Though, calling it a tent is an understatement.

The carbon fiber Skyloft is weatherproof and is heated. It has dual pane windows, an integrated diesel heater, and up to 380 watts of solar power. This level of fancy camping is just perfect for the Grand Wagoneer.

Jeep pulled out the second- and third-row seats. Then they removed the rear sunroof to make a sort of escape hatch. You can climb up through that hatch to get into the Skyloft.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

The space where the seats were is now a lounge. It still has the Grand Wagoneer’s rear seat entertainment system. It also has two big beanbag chairs, a plush throw rug, and ambient lighting. It’s nicer (and larger) than my first three apartments.

Widened wheel openings and new flares help fit 35-inch tires on custom wheels. The larger tires raise the ride height an inch and a half. The Grand Wagoneer has a black Rhino-lined roof, and the body is painted in an industrial green.

Oh yeah, and the Grand Wagoneer has frickin’ laser beams! Jeep fitted laser-powered off-road lamps in the tweaked front bumper to light up the night.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 4xe Departure Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Departure is the first of the two concepts that promote parts Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) might build. The Departure gets a cool new tubular spare tire mount that can flip. Turn the spare into the trunk for a better departure angle, and turn it out for more cargo space. Whichever you need.

The Departure concept also gets a new tubular grille guard. The guard quickly folds down to give you a four-foot bench seat for relaxing on the trail.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Windshield header-mount off-road lights fold upward on custom brackets. So they’ll still work with the window folded forward. There are rock lights at all four corners, JPP hard MOLLE panels in the roll bar, and new flat fender flares that hold bigger tires while staying street-legal for lighting requirements.

This one also has a Jeep Performance Parts 2.0-inch lift with Bilstein remote reservoir shocks. The 17-inch wheels wear 37-inch tires.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon Sideburn Concept

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

Last but not least is the Sideburn concept. It gets the same 2.0-inch lift and shocks as Departure. It also has a folding grille guard bench and Warn winch .

Sideburn’s coolest bits are at the back. The sport bar is actually a two-tier cargo shelf. It’s made from carbon fiber and steel and has integrated steps to let you get to your stored gear. Eight tie-down loops let you lock in cargo totes.

Easter Jeep Safari Concepts 2023

The box sides are also super cool. Built-in MOLLE panels above and behind the arches give you more secure storage. There are integrated RotoPaX containers, too, letting you store liquids on the outside of the box. Other JPP bits include a heavy-duty vinyl floor system, side steps, grab handles, and half doors.

2023 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts

Jeep will bring all of the concepts to the trail at the 57th Annual Easter Jeep Safari on April 1-9. We’ll even get to drive them, so you can expect our up-close and personal take with more details and interior shots on these seven sweet rides very soon.

Here Are Jeep’s Awesome 2024 Easter Safari Builds From Every Angle

Jeep has created four amazing new concepts for its easter safari drive this year, including a rad camping rig built around a jeep grand wagoneer..

A photo of the four Easter Jeep Safari trucks parked up.

It’s that time of year again people, it’s Easter. And sure, that might mean it’s the season for eating too much chocolate or celebrating the anniversary of someone’s resurrection (weirdly on a different day each year) but for us here in the world of cars, it means it’s time to look at a bunch of awesome Jeep concepts.

That’s because the off-road brand is preparing to host its annual Easter Jeep Safari . Jeep will head to the desert and bring with it all manner of modified metal. This year, its special builds do not disappoint.

For the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari, Jeep put together four special trucks built around its Wrangler , Gladiator and Grand Wagoneer models. Each car is fitted with the kind of off-road upgrades you and I can only dream of, as well as all kinds of massive wheels, rugged trim and some seriously awesome color choices.

To celebrate their unveiling, we’ve put together a bunch of the best pictures of the new Jeeps that we could find. So pull up a camp chair, don your desert boots and sit back to enjoy the best the 2024 Easter Jeep Safari has to offer.

The Low Down

A photo of the front quarter of the Low Down concept.

First up it’s the Low Down concept, which is built on Jeep’s mighty Wrangler Rubicon 392. The car was designed in homage to the Jeep Wrangler Lower 40 from 2009’s Easter Jeep Safari. As such, it packs an awesome paint scheme, massive wheels and no roof, just like its inspiration.

The One With The V8

A photo of the engine bay of the Low Down concept.

Because this is a Wrangler 392 , there’s a stock 6.4-liter V8 motor under hood. The engine kicks out 475-horsepower and is mated to an eight-speed automatic. To show off its beating heart, Jeep’s engineers fitted the hood with a see-through section that reveals that massive engine in all its glory.

Get It In The Good Color

A photo of the side view of the Low Down concept.

For the finish on the Low Down, Jeep opted for a lush poison apple red paint that pops nicely compared to the black grille and roof rails. To streamline the look of the truck, Jeep opted to remove the rear door handles, because who needs those anyway, and fitted a bespoke fuel filler door on the rear quarter.

Looks Wheelie Big

A photo of the rear quarter of the Low Down concept.

Because it’s a Jeep Safari build, the truck is finished off with a set of massive 42-inch BFGoodrich Krawler mud-terrain tires , which are fitted to a 20-inch bead-lock wheel at each corner. Under the car, Jeep has left the Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension as stock, but it also fitted Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears.

Willys Dispatcher

A photo of the front of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

Next is the Willys Dispatcher build, which is based on Jeep’s Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The build is said to invoke “...the nostalgia of the early post-war civilian Jeep,” according to the brand. As such, it unites an awesome paint scheme and the rugged looks of the Wrangler with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that churns out 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.

Best Wheels Of The Bunch

A photo of the front quarter of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

The biggest changes on this build are in the looks department, with Jeep finishing the truck in that lovely element 115 green paint. At each corner, there’s a 16-inch steely wheel painted cream. They really pop against the Traxion 36-inch tires and teal body. To finish the retro-stylings, there’s a classic-looking Warn winch up front.

Look At That Interior

A photo of the interior of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

Inside the Dispatcher is a lovely trim that reminds me of my grandparents living room, in a really, really good way. But what does that look like to anyone that’s not been in their house in rural Yorkshire? Well, it’s full of tan saddle leather and a neat houndstooth pattern across the seats and dash. I dig it.

A top down photo of the Willys Dispatcher concept.

Other flourishes on the Dispatcher include a vinyl covering to protect the floor from any water that could come in through the open roof, and there’s an onboard air compressor to manage your tire pressures on the trail. To keep you moving when the going gets tough, the truck also has Dana 50 Advantech front and rear axles with 4.70 gears.

The High Top

A photo of the front of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

If you absolutely must have a pickup truck, I guess the new High Top build isn’t a bad way to go. Built around Jeep’s Gladiator Rubicon , the High Top concept packs in massive 40-inch off-road tires from BFGoodrich at each corner, wrapped around a set of black Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels.

How It All Works

A photo of the underside of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

Under the hood, the truck is powered by Jeep’s 3.6 liter Pentastar V6 engine, which has been paired with a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. To get all that oomph onto the trail, Jeep gave the Gladiator High Top Dana 60 front and rear axles with 5.38:1 gearing and adjustable air suspension.

Pickup, Pickup

A photo of the side of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

Because this is a pickup , there’s a whole bed out back to fill with your hopes and dreams. To maximize its useability, Jeep gave the High Top truck the latest Decked truck bed storage system, which offers additional lockable cargo space just like you get from a trunk. Imagine that.

Winching At My Heartstrings

A photo of the front of the High Top pickup truck from Jeep.

Up front, the bumper of the Gladiator has been modified to include a custom protective hoop from American Expedition Vehicles. This sits above a Warn winch, and the High Top packs in rock rail power steps from Rock Slide Engineering to protect its underside.

Grand Vacationeer

A photo of the front quarter of the Grand Vacationeer concept build.

You know what’s cooler than a ginger-colored pickup truck? A minty green Grand Wagoneer that can take you almost anywhere. This is the Jeep Vacationeer and it’s excellent. Fitted out with 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires, 18-inch rims and a 1.5-inch lift, this is everything the Wagonner was born to be.

Not Enough Room To Camp In The Trunk

A photo of the side of the Grand Vacationeer concept with its tent popped up.

Inside, Jeep has ripped out the second and third rows of seats in the Wagoneer in order to install a pass-through entrance to the custom tent that’s fitted up top. The custom carbon fiber tent comes from outdoor experts Skyloft and offers climate-controlled sleeping space for two and all the windows you need to enjoy your surroundings. Is this the ultimate definition of “glamping?”

Never Forget Your Car Cacti

A photo of the interior of the Grand Vacationeer concept build.

As well as skid plates to protect the underside and custom flared wheel arches, Jeep has also fitted the Vacationeer with a pretty stunning interior. There’s tons of earth tones and soft finishes, and the rear space has been lined with weather-proof materials to ensure the back of the Wagoneer can handle all the outdoor activities you throw at it.

Which Would You Have?

A photo of the four Jeep concept cars driving at sunset.

So, that’s the lineup of awesome custom Jeeps that Stellantis will take to its annual Easter Jeep Safari this year. If you could drive away today in one of them, which would you choose? My heart tells me the Low Down is the best of the bunch, but deep down I really want the overlanding Wagoneer.

Jeep Phoned In The Easter Jeep Safari Concepts This Year. Here’s Why I’m OK With It

 • By David Tracy
 • March 25, 2024

Easter Jeeps Ts2 (1)

The Easter Jeep Safari concepts are an annual tradition from my former employer, Chrysler (now called Stellantis). The company does not have to build wacky custom Jeeps every year, but it does anyway, and for that I am immensely grateful. That said, relative to years past, this year’s concepts were phoned in; there’s just no other way to put it.

My headline would technically be better if I ditched the “Here’s why I’m Okay With It” ending, but I’d be an ungrateful swine if I just ragged on some concept cars that Jeep makes for our enjoyment (and for marketing, of course). Come on: Nobody needs to spend millions on half a dozen fun concept cars that journalists get to drive at the Easter Jeep Safari — an event Jeep shows up to year in and year out despite all the costs associated with flying out employees, housing those employees, shipping vehicles, renting space in the hardware store parking lot for a big display, feeding and sometimes housing journalists, and on and on. [Update: And to make it abundantly clear, this is not something that a company that’s recently been cutting employees needs to spend money on. -DT].

Vidframe Min Top

With that out of the way, I’m going to call a spade a spade. This year’s concepts are mid. Boring. Wack. Whatever term you want to use. Let’s have a look:

2024 Easter Jeep Safari Concepts (clockwise, Left To Right): Jee

For one, there are only four concepts, which is fewer than anytime I can remember. There’s the Willys Dispatcher Concept, the Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept, the Vacationeer Concept, and the Low Down Concept, none of which is all that remarkable. Usually there’s at least one model that’s badass and worthy of a poster, but this year there are just a couple that are somewhat cool.

Let’s start with the somewhat cool ones.

2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept

The Dispatcher concept is somewhat cool because it’s got half doors and steelies, both of which look fantastic. Plus, the Willys embossment on the hood is fun, as is the green color, especially with the black windshield frame, which used to be how old Willys Jeeps came from the factory (painted body, black windshield frame).

2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept

The interior looks OK. There are some custom seats, a custom center console lid, and a custom dash trim insert. The powertrain is the 2.0-liter engine in plug-in hybrid configuration (it’s a 4xe underneath).

2024 Jeep® Vacationeer Concept

Also somewhat cool is the Vacationeer concept, which is based on a Jeep Grand Wagoneer. It’s got a lift, some big tires on special wheels, a roof tent, a winch, and a cool looking interior:

2024 Jeep® Vacationeer Concept

The other two concepts — the Gladiator Rubicon High Top and the Lowdown — are basically a beefed-up Gladiator 3.6 and a beefed-up four-door Jeep Wrangler 392, both with half doors and humongous 40+-inch tires.

2024 Jeep® Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

I will say, I dig the Low Down’s transparent hood:

2024 Jeep® Low Down Concept

But that’s it. Yes, for 2024, the Easter Jeep Safari concepts are a beefed-up four-door Wranger, a beefed-up Gladiator, a Green lifted Grand Wagoneer with a plaid interior, and a Green Wrangler with steel wheels and a brown leather cabin.

I’m grateful — again — because Jeep doesn’t have to do this, but the fact that the brand phoned in 2024’s concepts is pretty much irrefutable. I mean, look at the 2023 EJS concepts:

2023 Easter Jeep Safari Lineup Of Jeep® Brand Concept Vehicles

First, let’s get to the elephant in the room — 2023’s Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept looks a hell of a lot like the “new” Vacationeer, doesn’t it?:

Grand Wagoneer Overland Concept

So really, it appears that Jeep has 3.5 new concepts for 2024. Yikes. What’s the cause of this? The French imposing strict budget cuts? (I’ve heard whispers of this from former colleagues). Or is it the fact that the real brains behind the whole EJS operation — Mark Allen — retired last year ? Yeah, probably both.

Anyway, to drive home how boring this year’s concepts are, let’s show off some Mark Allen-era EJS concepts, shall we? In addition to the Grand Wagoneer that seems to have been recycled, there was this incredible Jeep Cherokee 4xe concept:

1978 Jeep® Cherokee 4xe Concept

And there was the Scrambler 392 Concept:

Jeep® Scrambler 392 Concept

And there was another Magneto, a version of which we’d seen before, but still:

Jeep® Wrangler Magneto 3.0 Concept

Let’s go back to 2022, because look at these seven machines:

Electrified Power, Legendary 4x4 Capability And Commanding Perfo

I won’t lie: The 2022 concepts weren’t amazing, but at least there were seven of them, and there was a nice army-green half-door-equipped four-door with steelies. The new Dispatcher honestly isn’t that different:

Jeep Ru31 Con

Let’s go back to 2021:

2021 Easter Jeep Safari jeep® magneto, Jeep Red Bare, Jeepste

In ’21, there were six concept Jeeps, with one being the first iteration of the Magneto:

2021 Easter Jeep Safari Jeep® Wrangler Magneto Concept

And there was this incredible Jeepster Beach concept:

2021 Easter Jeep Safari Jeep® “resto Mod” jeepster Beach Conce

It’s an updated 1968 C101 Jeepster Commando grafted onto a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon frame, with a 2.0-liter Hurricane turbocharged inline-four under the hood. It’s awesome.

Let’s step back to 2019 (the Easter Jeep Safari did not take place in 2020 due to the pandemic):

The Jeep And Mopar Brands Have Once Again Joined Forces To Creat

There were six concepts, and I really don’t have to say anything else other than this:

Jeep® Five Quarter: “resto Mod” Of 1968 Jeep M 715 Gladiato

Holy shit the Five-Quarter was easily one of the best Jeep concepts ever. Just wow.

Jeep® J6: Mixes Classic Jeep Truck Styling With Concept And Pro

But that wasn’t the only stand-out for 2019; the J6 regular-cab short-bed was also thoroughly legit.

Let’s go back to 2018:

From Left To Right; Nacho Jeep® Concept, J Wagon Concept, B Ute

There were six concepts, including the incredible Wagoneer Road Trip:

Jeep® Wagoneer Roadtrip Concept

And there was the 4SPEED:

Jeep® 4speed Concept

Let’s step back to 2017, one of the greatest years for EJS concepts:

Jeep® Concept Vehicles At The 2017 Easter Jeep® Safari In Moab

Just look at the hotrodi-ish Quicksand concept:

Jeep® Quicksand Concept At The 2017 Easter Jeep® Safari In Moa

And check out the CJ66!:

Jeep® Cj66 Concept At The 2017 Easter Jeep® Safari In Moab, Ut

Don’t forget the weird doors and roof on the Jeep Safari Concept:

Jeep® Safari Concept At The 2017 Easter Jeep® Safari In Moab,

Even the Switchback at least had some weird doors:

Jeep® Switchback Concept At The 2017 Easter Jeep® Safari In Mo

But the king of 2017, and one of the greatest EJS concepts ever (I say “one of” because we’re getting to the absolute #1 concept here in a bit) is the Grand One Concept, based on the first-gen “ZJ” Jeep Grand Cherokee:

Jeep® Grand One Concept

Ok, let’s keep going. Here’s 2016:

Check out that Renegade pickup!

The Trailcat is a 707 horsepower….um, something :

Look at how absurdly badass the Crew Chief 715 Concept is:

And how about that Shortcut Concept?:

Hell, Jeep even brought an old FC-150 out to Moab:

Jeep® Fc 150 Heritage Vehicle

Here’s 2015:

Seven New, Capable And Fun Jeep Concept Vehicles – Featuring A

The Staff Car is one of my favorite mostly-Just-A-Jeep-Wrangler concepts:

Jeep® Staff Car Concept

The two-door Jeep Chief is pretty sweet with its Jeep SJ-inspired “Razor Grille”:

Jeep Chief– Easter Jeep Safari 2015

I even kinda dig the Jeep Wrangler Africa — a stretched, high-top four-door Wrangler with extra cargo room for overlanding:

Jeep Wrangler Africa – Easter Jeep Safari 2015

Here’s 2014:

2014 Moab Easter Jeep® Safari Group Shot

I won’t lie to you: 2014 was pretty mid. Jeep was celebrating its new Jeep Cherokee KL, so there are some KL concepts. There are some Wrangler-based ones, and a Grand Cherokee. It was a bit uninspired, I’ll admit, but at least there were six cars.

Now let’s check out 2013:

Jeep And Mopar Vehicles For The 47th Annual Moab Easter Jeep Sa

Come on, you can’t tell me that the 3,000 pound lightweight “Stitch” concept isn’t awesome:

Jeep Wrangler Stitch

But the reason why this article is so damn long is that I wanted to get back to 2012, when Jeep debuted the greatest Jeep Concept vehicle in history:

Cn012 055jp

Am I talking about the red J-12 Concept? No, though that thing is awesome:

Cn012 027jp

No, in the pantheon of Jeep Concept Greatness, there stands one Jeep at the pinnacle, far above the rest:

Img 3009

The Jeep Mighty FC Concept.

It’s absolutely perfect. Here, allow the man behind it, the recently-retired Mark Allen, to tell you all about it:

Mark Allen, former head of Jeep design, is far more than just a former employee of Chrysler, he is a true Jeep diehard. He attends Jeep events for fun, he has encyclopedic knowledge of Jeep history, and overall he’s just an extremely cool guy. He once gave me an AMC 304 out of his AMC Javelin for free. He called me, offered me the engine, gave me his address, and when I stopped by, he hooked that 304 to a chain and dropped it into my pickup truck.

Now he’s gone, and it appears nobody’s picked up the Easter Jeep Safari mantle. Or the French are really tight with cash. Again, I think it’s a bit of both. In any case, I’m okay with the phoned-in 2024 Concept cars because, if we’re being real, these fun vehicles are probably #1 on the budget-cut-choppability index, and I’m just grateful Jeep has been doing them this long. Hopefully next year they come out stronger, or maybe they’ll be gone forever, and we can just remember what a hell of a run this was.

Jblues

I heard there was a new ShortCut concept out there. Did you see it?

Tyler Durden

What is even the point of these concepts? Why not actually PROCUCE and SELL a couple of the designs? There are a few amazing looking ideas here, and they look far better than most of the modern designs today.

Figure out a common platform/chassis, and stick some limited edition bodies on top; maybe 5,000 or 10,000 for each design. Seems simple.

Swedish Jeep

Jeeps are not 100k cars- ever (I’m looking at you 392….). What I don’t see mentioned here is how Jeep has dropped the prices by 10-15% across the board on everything but the 4xe. Here in TX even the Rubis are 3-4 k off, Gladiators are nearly 8k off and those ugly Wagoneer- wannabe Escalades are 15k off…. Or where they should have been priced to begin with. You can get a NEW Renegade 4wd for 20K making it the cheapest thing out there.

Meanwhile the Ford Maverick went from 20k to 27k and is staying steady. Jeeps drop in price, Maverick Hybrids up 35% in 2 years….. The market is dictating what Mfgs can charge for cars…

As far as the Bronco’s everyone loves to compare- the stripper models are gone- Killed by Ford like a drug dealer hooking you on the good stuff, they are just as expensive as the Rubis with all the bells and whistles.

Austin Vail

These are all proof to me that it’s absurd there aren’t a ton of kit car companies building alternate bodies for Jeep Wrangler chassis. They’re plentiful, they are body on frame so you actually can in fact just bolt an alternate body on, and Jeep people already like extensive modifications. There’s no reason someone couldn’t make nose swaps and aftermarket beds and bodywork to build their own versions of these types of concept Jeeps. But no, instead we get angry Jeep grilles and hideous angular fender flares.

Ryan L

The simpsons canyoneer is fun but definitely feels like a mulligan.

How bad do we need a dedicated shop doing restomods on late 90s grand cherokees.

JaredTheGeek

The Vacationeer is clearly an ode to the National Lampoon’s Vacation Family Truckster and I love it.

Ixcaneco

Thanks so much for this article. Great to go through each year and compare what Jeep brought. Excellent!

Arthur Flax

Correct me if I’m wrong and call me a blasphemer, but every Jeep concept, ever, looks like a restomod of a past Jeep. That being said, I like the steel wheels and paint on the 2024 Jeep® Willys Dispatcher Concept.

PlatinumZJ

I say it every year…we need plaid upholstery as an option.

Myk El

I so miss patterned cloth seats as being just a relatively normal thing one could get. Admittedly, I was very, very young when it was still common.

Bill Garcia

Funny enough, and I will never admit this to my wife, but getting the plaid seats was the #1 reason a custom-ordered Volvo XC60 T8 ended up in the driveway… right next to my Wrangler 🙂

TXJeepGuy

I feel like there’s only so much they can do. But each year should have a cool resomod, and two vehicles that hint at a new trim level. Maybe we’ll get factory 40’s out of this year.

Theotherotter

Given DT’s notorious pop-cultural ignorance, I’m surprised he could come up with that many synonyms for ‘mediocre’.

Dead Elvis, Inc.

Influence from the California girlfriend, maybe?

Andy Carlson

I will never get over how amazingly bland the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. Just so, so, so boring.

Cyko9

They should’ve given the “Vacationeer” a jungle camo wrap or something to make it seem remarkable. A modern Wagoneer with a roof tent? Least probable concept to be reproduced. The other concepts for 2024 look pretty much like day 2 after someone buys a stock Jeep Wrangler: lifted, big tires & no top. I like all those half doors, though.

LactoseTheIntolerant

I think its shade of Green is supposed to be a reference USDA Forest Service Green along with the Dispatcher. Maybe someone at Jeep has been reading the former site and now The Autopian?

https://jalopnik.com/the-2021-ford-bronco-needed-to-be-rendered-as-a-u-s-fo-1844423831

Nah, its clearly an homage to the Family Truckster.

2024 Easter Jeep Safari: Four New Concepts, Each with a Different Purpose and Palette

Spring means Easter, and for the Jeep faithful, that means the annual pilgrimage to Moab, Utah, for the Easter Jeep Safari. 2024 marks the 58th annual gathering, and, as has been the tradition for the past few years, Jeep has granted its talented crew of in-house designers the freedom to create a small batch of one-off concepts that express their artistic vision in fully realized concepts that might otherwise never make it past the drawing board. Plus, it's a great way to get some public input on stylistic themes, accessories, and functional add-ons that might already be in consideration for production. Here are the four concepts they cooked up for 2024.

As long as we're pointing out the obvious, it would be pointless to pay homage to the Wagoneers of yore without at least a touch of woodgrain, and the Vacationeer wears it in the thin-strip style of select Jeep models from the late 20th century, including the low-volume Wagoneer Brougham of the early 1980s.

The custom exterior paint, dubbed Spearminted, is similar to the hue of the paint on the Willys Dispatcher Concept also found on this list, but it ramps up the spent nuclear fuel rod effect to Simpsons levels of iridescence. 7 things you NEED to do in Moscow this winter

safari jeep display

1. Get your skates on

People at the opening of the Street Rink outdoor skating rink in Gorky Park, Moscow.

People at the opening of the Street Rink outdoor skating rink in Gorky Park, Moscow.

Young or old, sporty or couch potato, it doesn’t matter – ice skating is THE quintessential winter activity in which pretty much everyone Muscovite partakes. For that reason, Russians tend to be quite good at skating, but don’t let that put you off if you’re a beginner. Public ice skating is more about embracing the crisp winter mornings here than hardcore sporting endeavor, so expect high spirits and friendly atmospheres.

What’s more, there are a staggering 45 year-round skating rinks to choose from in Moscow. Gorky Park’s rink is a must-see that allows for pleasant strolling, coffee drinking, and art viewing afterwards. The VDNH rink is also worth checking out for the park that surrounds it, offering majestic light shows, fountains, and Soviet relics. For a more open-plan skating arena, head to Sokolniki Park, where you’ll find a whopping 5,400 square meter rink.

2. Sweat out the winter blues

Sandunovsky baths

Sandunovsky baths

We challenge you to find a more relaxing atmosphere than a Russian banya . You simply won’t – this tradition will warm up your body and your soul. Sure, being practically boiled in a firewood sauna and then hit with a birch tree while half-drunk might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but trust us, they’re missing out on this unique detox.

Check out the Sanduny bathhouse for the most jaw-dropping Russian relaxation experience imaginable, characterized by palatial columns and mosaics, as well as stylish cold water pools for you to dive into after your beat-down. Happy steaming!

3. Light up your life

Teatralnaya Square

Teatralnaya Square

Moscow city center’s mesmerizing light display is not only the pride of the city, but of half of Russia too, who travel to the capital specifically for the luminous spectacle. In the lead up to New Year, the areas around Red Square, Teatralnaya Square, Nikolskaya Street, Pushkin Square, and Tverskoy Boulevard become a neon ocean.

The lights are a significant annual investment for the Moscow council, not least because they tend to replace the lights with new ones year on year, but it’s usually deemed worth it by admiring onlookers and tourists. If this display doesn’t get you in the festive spirit, nothing will.

4. Shout your lungs out at an ice hockey match

safari jeep display

If there’s one sport Russians are particularly passionate about, it’s ice hockey. Go and experience the fierce athleticism, frequent on-rink fights, and rowdy crowds for yourself, and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. In contrast to Russian football matches, where there’s often little more than atmospheric novelty to be had, the country can take pride in having world-class hockey players, whose quality will be immediately obvious.

The best place for a match is the slick 12,100-seater VTB Ice Palace, home to CSKA’s ice hockey outfit.

Fancy a glimpse of the Orthodox Christmas atmosphere as it was in the Russian Empire? Look no further than Novodevichy Convent , a picturesque, snow-covered religious haven with a history stretching back five centuries. Initially used as a fortress for noblewomen, this stunning riverside ensemble is now a functioning monastery and peaceful cloister that boasts four stunning cathedrals, Kremlin-like walls, and a spectacular icon collection. Holy, placid, and serene, the convent is a uniquely antiquate enclave that’s night and day from the bustling modernity that surrounds it.

Sometimes, you don’t need anything particularly ambulative to feel at home in a city. In fact, nothing embodies Moscow’s winter wonderland better than a mere stroll in one of its stately parks, sure to be piled high with endless snow dunes throughout the winter.

For a pleasant outing beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, check out the grandiose Tsaritsyno Park , where nature peacefully co-exists alongside tsarist palatial pomp. The more sizeable Kolomenskoye Park is also worth checking out for a longer excursion that packs in medieval wooden architecture, never-ending rows of trees, and a postcard-ready river view.

However, if you want to really get off the beaten track and experience the winter pristine snow, head further outside the city limits to one of Moscow’s forests – Izmailovsky Park, Timiryazevsky Park, or Elk Island National Park, for example (all accessible by metro).

7. Get festive at the city’s many Christmas markets

Sip on a mulled wine, soak up the bright lights, haggle over a matryoshka doll with Putin’s face on it. Moscow’s Christmas markets are an absolutely essential tourist experience, with the most popular fair set up right on the Kremlin’s doorsteps on Red Square. Indeed, those quaint stalls in the heart of the city take some beating against the backdrop of St. Basil’s Cathedral and the illuminated GUM shopping center. There are some other cool festive spots throughout the city, though – Gorky Park, for one, will be decked out in lights and international food stalls, while the Izmailovo Kremlin offers an unmissable experience in the world of kitsch souvenir shopping from vodka to pottery, to (sort of) authentic samovars.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

 • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
 • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
 • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
 • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
 • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
 • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
 • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring, Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya. Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya. This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war. The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station, and change onto the 3/Blue line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya. Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

safari jeep display

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

safari jeep display

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar. One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

safari jeep display

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

safari jeep display

Jump back on the 3/Blue line in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
