Based on the novel of the same name by showrunner Raphael Montes and Ilana Casoy , this crime drama follows police clerk Verônica Torres ( Tainá Müller ) as she takes on a particularly harrowing investigation following the suicide of a young woman. It’s a compelling and unnerving story that tackles themes like domestic and sexual violence. With such a heavy subject and a fair share of pretty graphic scenes, the show isn’t an easy watch, but it’s certainly worthwhile. The characters are engaging from the get-go, whether you love them or hate them, and the performances are equally amazing. Müller, in particular, is great as the secretary turned detective crushed by the callousness of her male coworkers and the overall cruelty that surrounds her, and Antônio Grassi is a very special kind of hateful as police chief Wilson Carvala. - Elisa Guimarães

The Endless Night (2023)

In The Endless Night , creator Gustavo Lipsztein explores the horrific mystery behind a tragic event that took place in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, back in 2013. Dramatically told over the course of five episodes, The Endless Night graphically begins with the fire at Nightclub Kiss, unraveling the story of families searching for their loved ones before some parents must ultimately accept the heartbreaking reality of their children’s death. After logging onto an old photoblog, she finds herself transported back to her high school years, getting the chance to redo things from her past with the wisdom she’s gained since growing up. To make matters even more complicated, Anita realizes she can travel back and forth and soon finds out that changing the past has implications for the future, too. Back to 15 is a delightful, clever teen show that offers charming characters and a blast from the past. – Taylor Gates

Maldivas (2022-present)

Maldivas could be described as part Desperate Housewives , with an exquisite cast of charismatic and beautiful women, part murder mystery series similar to Only Murders in the Building . Put that together, and you get Maldivas , a fresh new soapy dramedy series created by and starring the hilarious Natalia Klein . Maldivas follows the investigation of a death in an upscale condo community full of quirky characters, each one a suspect. The Mechanism (O Mecanismo) (2018-2019)

Cast: Selton Mello, Carol Abras, Enrique Díaz, Leonardo Medeiros, Antônio Saboia, Lee Taylor, Otto Jr, Osvaldo Mil.

The series, created by Elena Soarez (who also wrote all episodes) and José Padilha ( Elite Squad ), focuses on telling the story of the Car Wash operation, the biggest corruption probe in Brazil and very relevant politically as it is still unfolding. The series, like the Operation in itself, arouses passions — in Brazil, critics said the series’ biggest flaw was to explain everything in too much detail, but that made it a necessary resource so that the foreign public could understand the various nuances of the functioning of the Brazilian political and judicial system.

Selton Mello plays Police Chief Marcos Ruffo, and Verena Cardoni the Police Chief Caroline Abras, who are also the narrators of the series, who explain to the viewer the details of each character — all of them inspired in real characters involved in the operation, from president Lula da Silva (João Higino, played by Arthur Kohl ) to Veja Magazine, (in the series called Leia Magazine). With elements of police investigation and a lot of action, the series will please fans of the genre, with a story that revolves around the fight against corruption.

Killer Ratings (Bandidos na TV) (2019)

Daniel Bogado directs this seven-episode documentary telling the story of TV presenter and politician Wallace Souza , the so-called “defender of the public," accused of ordering a series of murders to raise the popularity of his TV show Canal Livre . Souza presented a show whose genre is among the most popular in Brazil, showing the violent reality of Brazilian cities — the problem here is that he was also fabricating it.

Between 1996 and 2009, Canal Livre showcased often graphic violence completely uncensored, in Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas. Thanks to the show, Souza was so popular that he was elected a state congressman in 1998 and re-elected two more times, but ended up having his term revoked in 2009 after the police accused him of associating with drug traffickers to display the murder of rivals on his TV show. For true crime fans, this series is a must as it depicts how far someone is able to go for fame and success. It’s just a jaw-dropping story, even for Brazilians used to this kind of shows.

Go Anitta (Vai Anitta) (2018-2020)

A documentary also mixing reality TV, Go Anitta has already guaranteed a second season that should go on air next year telling the story of Anitta , one of the most successful singers in Brazil today.

The documentary reveals the hectic backstage world of one of the greatest figures in today's Brazilian funk scene, which is one of the most popular music genres on the radio and on the streets, although constantly criminalized, especially in the favelas. The seven episodes of the first season focuses on the singer's shows, trips, and rehearsals as she goes through the process of consolidating her international career — with lots of music, dancing, and choreography that can enchant a public not familiar with the music genre.

Love Is Blind Brazil (2021-present)

Creator: Endemol Shine Brasil

Hosts: Camila Queiroz, Klebber Toledo

The first international version of the Netflix original reality show, Love Is Blind: Brazil is a strong contender for the title of best series in the franchise. Despite lacking an ultra-charismatic couple like Lauren and Cameron, from the first season of the American show, Love Is Blind Brazil makes up for it with some very detailed drama, a charming cast of supporting characters, and a pair of would-be lovebirds we can all root against. At the same time classier and more unhinged than its American counterpart, Love Is Blind Brazil is a great example of a reality show done right. Viewers are always in the know about what is going on between the contestants, even when the fighting takes place off-screen, and if someone is playing too much of a part and refusing to show their true colors, they will be called out sooner or later – sometimes by their own dad. It’s the perfect balance for those that get a kick out of minding other peoples’ business on TV, but just the healthy amount. - Elisa Guimarães

Sintonia (2019-present)

If Go Anitta doesn't do enough to introduce funk to the public, Sintonia will no doubt take care of that. Produced by Konrad Dantas, better known as Kondzilla , the owner of the largest record label and funk producer in Brazil and one of the largest music channels on YouTube, the series tells the story of 3 friends, Doni ( MC Jottapê ), Rita ( Bruna Mascarenhas ), and Nando ( Christian Malheiros ) trying to achieve success in the world of funk, but having to fight against various adversities — such as organized crime, poverty, violence and the church in a low-income community in São Paulo.

Sintonia presents funk and favela to the world, showing what many MCs and DJs have to face to achieve success. But the series is not only a drama, it also makes you laugh and has lots of music. MC Jottapê is also a real life funkeiro and here combines his career as an actor and a singer, showing a little of his own reality on the screens.

Girls from Ipanema (Coisa Mais Linda) (2019-present)

Cast: Maria Casadevall, Pathy Dejesus, Fernanda Vasconcellos, Mel Lisboa, Leandro Lima, Ícaro Silva

"The Girl from Ipanema” by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes , is probably one of the best known Brazilian songs internationally, and the series, which plays with the name of the song, takes place during the emergence of Bossa Nova, a musical style that blends Brazilian samba with American jazz, ensuring the viewer a spectacle for the ears.

But the series is much more than that. Maria Casadevall plays Maria Luiza "Malu" Carone, a young and wealthy woman from São Paulo who decided to move to Rio de Janeiro to open a restaurant with her husband. Upon arriving, she finds out he left her and fled with all of her money. The series focuses on Malu's relationship with her new love, the singer Chico ( Leandro Lima ), and the crossing of her life with those of Adélia ( Pathy Dejesus ), a black woman and favela dweller who fights daily against racism, Lígia ( Fernanda Vasconcellos ), a singer repressed by her male chauvinist husband, and Thereza ( Mel Lisboa ), a journalist who fights for women's rights in a 1959 Rio de Janeiro in full transformation and effervescence.

Music fans will not be disappointed with a series full of moments of relaxation, sensuality, and some tension (particularly in the second season), while the costumes are worthy of Hollywood, and the cinematography really transports us to a vintage Rio de Janeiro.

Samantha! (2018-2019)

Cast: Emanuelle Araújo, Douglas Silva, Cauã Gonçalves, Sabrina Nonata

A comedy with dramatic tones, Samantha! tells the story of a former child star of the '80s whose success has remained in the past, but who dedicates her life to try winning it back — no matter how. Celebrities whose fame disappears after adulthood are a common phenomenon and they miss being loved, having a faithful audience and often cannot adapt to a life different from the one they have known.

This is the case of Samantha ( Emmanuelle Araújo ), who is trying to rebuild her career with the help of her husband Dodói ( Douglas Silva ), a former soccer player who also doesn't accept the end of his career but also just got out of jail after 10 years, and her two children. The series has the merit of presenting complex and layered characters through a sometimes exaggerated and even caricatured humour that, however, fully captures the essence of Brazil’s '80s television. The two seasons of Samantha! also manage to make a point by criticizing the media that often creates disposable idols, and fans who forget that behind the character there is a real person.

The Circle Brazil (2020-present)

Released just a few months after The Circle US , The Circle Brazil has an interesting cast of characters that make the most out of the social media competition. The game is definitely on in the Brazilian version of the show, in which players favor strategic and tactical thinking over flash-friendships in order to become the final influencer and take home the prize. The Circle Brazil is a show for those that are into reality TV for the competitive aspect, and not just for the drama. However, that doesn’t mean there is no room for real connection and even some screen-transcendent romance. Though at first, some contestants aren’t as interesting as they could be, the cast’s almost daily renewal guarantees a constant stream of entertaining members, namely twins Lucas and Marcel (catfishing as Luma), and the sarcastic Rafael (catfishing as Ana). Imagine a dystopian futuristic society in which the planet has been devastated and when everyone turns 20 they have to go through a rigorous selection process with physical, psychological, and even moral tests — all to move to a region full of opportunities and the chance of a better life. There’s a catch: Only three percent of the population manages to get there.

But like every good dystopic series, a resistance movement called the "Cause" tries to subvert this unjust social order — a clear allegory of today's class society where inequality is the source of countless and endless conflicts. 3% , which was Netflix’s first Brazilian production, has not been very successful in its country of origin, but has received great praise worldwide for its four seasons. The show was also highly praised for its diversity, with many women in relevant roles, Black and Asian cast members, and transgender roles — all contributing to a series dealing with issues ranging from homosexuality and polygamy to physical disability.

Nobody's Looking (Ninguém tá olhando) (2019)

Nobody's Looking is a light comedy based on the 1998 movie City of Angels (which was in turn based on the 1987 film Wings of Desire ). The show’s main focus is to debate how arbitrary orders can be, as well as the very functioning of our lives — how we are taught to obey without question and to carry out our work, even without knowing exactly why or who is behind the decisions.

Ulysses ( Victor Lamoglia ) is, alongside Greta ( Julia Rabello ) and Chun ( Danilo de Moura ), an angel whose function is to take care of humans, who are assigned to them on a daily scale. They cannot get attached, after all, they are there just to do their jobs.

An angel who has just been born, Ulisses (or Uli) questions the system and ends up falling in love with Miriam ( Kéfera Buchmann , who before becoming an actress was a successful YouTuber), a woman he was supposed to protect, leading his angel friends to also break the rules. Believing that they will not suffer any consequences, the trio start to enjoy life — drinking, having sex, and doing drugs. But this act of rebellion, of course, will cost them a lot. Praised by the critics, the series unfortunately had only one season.

Reality Z (2020)

Cast: Nina Hartmann, Ravel Andrade, Carla Ribas, Emílio de Melo, Guilherme Weber, Luellem de Castro, João Pedro Zappa, Hanna Romanazzi, Pierre Baitelli

Yet another series of zombies with the ever-present intention of making a critique of society, the way it is organised, of selfishness and of how we are destroying ourselves and the planet. The difference is that Reality Z , which was directly inspired by the British series Dead Set (created by Charlie Brooker , who also developed Black Mirror ), is set in Rio de Janeiro, with a corrupt police and corrupt politicians, rampant racism, and a different social background from the original series.

The first half of the series — involving characters from a reality show that seems to be the last refuge against the zombie invasion — is completely different from the final part. This on the one hand takes us by surprise, but on the other, also turns out to be an easy way to achieve a change in tone of the series. However, the second part deserves to be highlighted, as there's a noteworthy improvement in the script and performances.

Reality Z is a series that proposes to be a serious take of social ills but ends up making us laugh for its extreme caricatures and exaggerated performances. With excellent special effects and a lot of blood, the series is so-bad-it's-good fun.

The Chosen One (O Escolhido) (2019-present)

Created by: Raphael Draccon and Carolina Munhóz

Cast: Paloma Bernardi, Pedro Caetano, Gutto Szuster, Renan Tenca, Mariano Mattos Martins, Alli Willow

Based on the Mexican series Niño Santo , the Brazilian version tells the story of three doctors, Lúcia Santeiro ( Paloma Bernardi ), Damião Almeida ( Pedro Caetano ) and Enzo Vergani ( Gutto Szuster ) who travel to a village in the Pantanal wetlands to vaccinate the inhabitants against a new mutation of the Zika virus. Once in the village, they end up trapped and notice that the villagers are devotees of a mysterious leader ( Renan Tenca ) who has the power to cure diseases.

The series captures the attention of the viewer trying to unravel the mysteries of the village of Aguazul, while also exploring current themes, like the Zika virus epidemic that has hit Brazil heavily in recent years, as well as the motif of religious and spiritual leaders who supposedly cure the sick, but are little more than cult leaders — in recent years several such leaders have been denounced and imprisoned for sexual abuse in the country. In addition, the Pantanal has made international headlines for the monstrous fires destroying one of the world's greatest biodiversities.

Omniscient (Omnisciente) (2020-present)

Cast: Carla Salle, Sandra Corveloni, Jonathan Haagensen, Guilherme Prates, Luana Tanaka

From 3% creator Pedro Aguilera , Omniscient follows a popular line of dystopian futurism with a world watched over by drones and without any privacy (an ever-present theme in science fiction since Brave New World ).

In the series, set in São Paulo, an omniscient artificial intelligence evaluates every attitude of the city's inhabitants — and denounces their infractions. Everything seemed perfect in this virtually crime-free reality until Nina ( Carla Salle ), who works to program the artificial intelligence, finds her father murdered with a bullet in his heart. Because of a suspicious flaw in the system, nobody is denounced for the crime, which is ultimately reported as death by natural causes. Together with her brother Daniel ( Guilherme Prates ) and her friend Judite ( Sandra Corveloni ), Nina will discover more than just an innocent flaw.

The series has only six episodes and does resolve the mystery by the end, but there are some loose ends that could guide a possible second season.

Brazil has a bit of a reputation for releasing beautifully-produced, limit-pushing productions with compelling storylines. In my view, it doesn’t fall into predictable, over-dramatic plots as often as some of the telenovelas and lower budget films produced in other parts of South America (but that’s kind of why we love them, right?!). Brazilian TV and film are incredible realms in which to get lost for a few days, and luckily platforms such as Netflix are doing well to showcase some of the best Brazilian movies and TV shows out there.

Although they love a bit of dystopia, this collection of the best Brazilian movies and TV shows can still give you great insight into the culture of Brazil and mindset of its people. It’s a fantastic way to learn about the country before you go, plus you’ll always have something to chat to the locals about once you get there!

As luck would have it, all of the below TV shows are on Netflix (at least in my current region of the UK, a VPN will help you access any region’s Netflix), but unfortunately you’ll have to get a bit more creative with finding a place to watch the list of the best Brazilian movies. Rich in Love, Aquarius and City of God: 10 Years Later are all there, though!

The Best Brazilian TV Shows

In my opinion, this is easily the best Brazilian TV show. Available on Netflix, 3% is like an adult take on the Hunger Games, where due to a lack of resources 97% of the dystopian population live in complete poverty, whereas each year 3% of 18 year-olds are given the chance to prove themselves as worthy of living in the luxurious Offshore, where they have crazy technology and want for nothing. The first season follows a new cohort of competing youths as they step over each other in rounds and rounds of logical, physical and ethical challenges, known as ‘ El Proceso ‘. Things get pretty explosive!

Boca a Boca / The Kissing Game

This Brazilian TV show is the LGBTQ zombie series we didn’t know we needed. Translated into English as ‘ The Kissing Game ‘, this Netflix hit starts in a small agricultural town in Brazil and follows a group of teens whose amorous actions spread a super-contagious virus that turns people into zombies. It’s modern, fast-paced and perhaps even a little quirky in places.

Coisa Mais Linda / Girls from Ipanema

Based in one of the richest neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro during the 1950s, this Brazilian TV show is the story of Maria Luiza, a housewife turns lemons into limonada and opens a bossa nova club after finding out her husband has run off. Bossa nova is a style of samba that was just finding its feet in Rio at this time before it spread to become a solid part of Brazilian culture. And of course, it has a sprinkling of romance and strong themes of finding oneself.

Bom Dia, Verônica / Good Morning, Veronica

This makes the list of the best Brazilian TV shows for how intricate and dark it is. A deep thriller, it follows police clerk Verônica as she investigates a suicide and series of murders of women, and unveils some grotesque crimes – all whilst fighting a steady stream of sexism, of course.

Irmandade / Brotherhood

What would you do if our brother was in charge of a criminal gang? What would you do if your brother was in charge of a criminal gang, and you were a lawyer with a good heart and no desire to cross the law? Would you snitch? Revered as one of the best Brazilian TV shows on Netflix, Brotherhood is a brilliantly-filmed, gripping tale of Cristina, who is forced to become a rat within her brother’s prison organisation.

A story from the streets of São Paulo, this incredible Brazilian TV show brings us the grit of the favelas, and shows the uphill struggle of three young friends to reach their dreams. With a style quite similar to La Reina del Flow – one of the best Colombian TV shows on Netflix – musical success, religious faith and the party lifestyle mix with the dark worlds of drugs, church corruption and gang violence. It’s a gripping look into the vibrant culture of favelas and the heavy issues that many less privileged Brazilians deal with on a daily basis.

Brazilian mega-star Anitta grants all access to the backstage of her jam-packed life. From writing a new song every month, to filming a music video in the Amazon rainforest and producing a world tour, we see Anitta push through various health problems to create a world-class experience and inspire as many fans as she can on the way.

Ninguém Tá Olhando / Nobody’s Looking

The best Brazilian TV shows are those that really push their creativity, and Nobody’s Looking is a prime example of this. In a school for what are essentially guardian angels, Ulisses is the newest divine creation, and so he begins his training to protect humans and uphold strict rules of the Angelus System. However, he has some questions and ideas that will shake up everything. You’ll find strong The Good Place vibes in this one!

The Best Brazilian Movies

Cidade de deus / city of god.

A classic in Brazilian film. It is based on a novel, but that novel was based broadly on real life events. Cidade de Deus is the name of the favela in which 2 young boys are growing. As they get older, their paths split off in different directions, with one striving to be a photographer, and the other working his way up the ranks of a violent gang.

What’s really striking about this common favourite of the best Brazilian movies is that instead of casting A-listers, many of the actors in the film were from the favelas in question, and given the huge opportunity to turn their fortunes around by taking part in a blockbuster. A sequel, City of God – 10 Years Later returns to the favela and documents 18 of the original actors’ lives now.

Haunting and raw, Carandiru is a masterpiece. It’s been given a place in the hall of best Brazilian movies for its thought-provoking exploration the country’s penal system and the wasted lives that lay within it. The film follows a doctor who goes into horrendously overcrowded Brazilian prisons to test prisoners for HIV. He takes the time to listen to their life stories in the build up to the real-life Carandiru Massacre that took place in 1992.

A Vida Invisível de Eurídice Gusmão / The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão

In terms of ratings, this is one of the best Brazilian movies in the last few years. The film focuses on two inseparable sisters in the 1950s whose father tore them apart to pursue different paths in life. One a talented pianist who made it to Europe, and the other trapped in a domestic world, we see their efforts to struggle through life alone before they can find each other again.

On the surface, this is just the tale of a middle-aged woman who is the last person in her block to refuse to sell her apartment to a development company. However, what makes this one of the best Brazilian movies in recent times is that it has been used as a political protest against Brazil’s government, namely in a perceived coup d’etat that resulted in Brazil’s first female prime minister being ousted in place of Bolsonaro. While not a political plot, there are enough connotations of a creeping loss of democracy for this to have been noticed.

Central do Brasil / Central Station

This is an uplifting pick of the best Brazilian movies, that brings us on a journey with Dora, whose job at the train station is to scribe letters on behalf of the illiterate people of Rio de Janeiro to their loved ones. In a bah humbug move, she doesn’t always even bother to send these letters.

However, when one of these illiterate clients dies, leaving her son alone in the city, she begrudgingly decides to give him a helping nudge towards finding his father in North-East Brazil, attempting to leave him on the bus. I won’t tell you what happens next but you can probably get the gist… It’s all sorts of bittersweet, heart-warming and beautiful.

Ricos de Amor / Rich in Love

A light & bright rom com, we’re taken on a journey of love between Teto and Paula. But there’s a catch; Teto has told his new lady that his upbringing was impoverished, which happens to be a complete and utter lie. If you want something sweet and light-hearted with a classic rainy romance scene, this is one of the best Brazilian movies for you.

O Ano em Que Meus Paid Saíram de Férias / The Year My Parents Went on Vacation

Another hard-hitter for you as the last in this list of the best Brazilian movies. This takes you to yet another decade in Brazil’s modern history, the 1970s, during which time the country was under a military dictatorship.

When a young boy, Mauro, is left to live with his grandfather so his parents can escape the political regime, we see parallels with the build-up to the Football World Cup while he awaits their return. After his grandfather dies, he leans on the Jewish community in a nearby neighbourhood for help and companionship.

7 Films and TV Shows to See Before Visiting Rio de Janeiro

Rio’s complex society and rich history have been a source of inspiration for many films, TV shows and documentaries for decades. Here is a roundup of some films worth checking out before a trip to the marvelous city for a sneak preview of what to expect.

City of god (2002).

City of God , based on true events, is one of Brazil’s most famous films . The story follows two young boys in Rio de Janeiro’s notorious favela , Cidade de Deus (City of God), who grow up to lead very different lives: one becomes a photographer – the other, a violent drug dealer. The film reflects the realities of the late ’60s to early ’80s in Brazil and is a fascinating, gripping movie to watch. It doesn’t reflect the realities of the main tourist zones in Rio, however, which are a far cry from the events in the film.

Central Station (1998)

If i were you (2006).

If I Were You ( Se Eu Fosse Voce ) is a situational comedy in which a couple wakes up on their fifth wedding anniversary to discover they’ve swapped bodies. The story is light, funny and a great example of Brazilian culture. It also shows that marital interactions and exchanges are very similar throughout the world.

Elite Squad (2008)

This gripping film is another of Brazil’s most popular films and one of those rarities in which the sequel is generally considered even better than the original. The film, loosely based on real-life events, explores the corruption that exists between the police and the drug gangs in the favelas , highlighting its huge and complex network and showing that interactions between BOPE (a special Brazilian police force) and drug lords are never as black and white as they seem. The film is set in 1997, and the favela in the film is Babilonia in Leme, which nowadays has been pacified and is safe to visit.

My Name Ain’t Johnny (2008)

My Name Isn’t Johnny follows the life of middle-class Joao Guilherme Estrella (Johnny), who leaves his comfortable life and becomes a full-time cocaine dealer in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s. The story is gripping and provides insight into why people sometimes follow a path of crime. There are also great shots of the city throughout the film and shows the carefree side of the lifestyle in Rio.

Rio is an animated movie that follows Blu, a blue macaw that is happily domesticated in the USA before being brought to Rio de Janeiro as part of a mating programme that attempts to to save his species. The story unfolds as Blu learns how to fly and gets to know the city better. Even though it’s animated, it still gives accurate images of some of Rio’s most iconic landmarks such as Copacabana Beach and Tijuca Forest , the world’s largest urban forest. The film itself was well-received both in Brazil and abroad and premiered at Lagoa , a picturesque lake near Ipanema.

HBO: Witness Rio (2012)

This documentary series was created by war photographers who took a gamble and went to Rio to see if they could make a clip there. The result was a documentary that recorded the conflict between the drug gangs and the police that were attempting to pacify the favelas in light of the then-approaching 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. The documentary, whilst accurate, is specific to certain areas of Rio and is not the reality in tourist regions of the city. It is worth watching, however, to understand the deeper societal context that has built the foundations of Rio’s culture.

Taste the Nation

Planet Earth and Planet Earth II

We had to wait 10 years between the debut of Planet Earth , a groundbreaking natural history show narrated by Sir David Attenborough, and its sequel Planet Earth II , but it was worth it. The first season, which focus on a specific biome and the flora and fauna that live there in each episode, spotlights smooth coated otters in Southeast Asia, Tibetan foxes, critically endangered Ethiopian ibex, and blue whales, among so many others. Our two favorite episodes, though, come from part II. In the sixth episode, the high-def cameras turn to cities to show how leopards in Mumbai, monkeys in Jodhpur, and catfish in southern France live alongside humans. And in what may be the most heart-racing episode of nature television, the islands episode of Planet Earth II follows a lone iguana racing against time—and a horde of snakes.

Long Way Up

Believe it or not, actor Ewan McGregor has been in the travel show business for some 16 years. It all started with Long Way Round , a 2004 series that followed McGregor and his friend Charley Boorman on a motorcycle journey from London through Europe, Asia—and then after a flight to Alaska—Canada, and the U.S. all the way to New York City. The show was followed by 2007's Long Way Down, which took the duo from Scotland to South Africa, on motorcycles once again. Now, they've turned their bikes (electric this time) towards South and Central America, with the latest iteration following the duo some 13,000 miles from Ushuaia, Argentina, on the continent's southernmost tip, to L.A. As usual, hijinks, pitfalls, and stunning scenery are all on view. Neither of the earlier shows are available to stream in the U.S. currently (though you can find them on Apple TV+ in the U.K.), but Long Way Up is an Apple TV+ original and on view for all.

Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat

Be sure to watch this show on a full stomach, or you'll be pausing to bake focaccia or cook tahdig along with affable host and Salt, Fat, Acid, Heat cookbook author Samin Nosrat. In the four-part show, Nosrat travels the world, making stops in Mexico, Japan, Italy, and her home in California, to discover the properties of each of the show's title elements. There's cheese. If you're familiar with Anthony Bourdian's The Layover, then the premise of British comedian Richard Ayoade's Travel Man will seem quite familiar. The goofy show follows the comic and primarily English celebrity friends as they galavant around cities like Helsinki, Miami, and Hong Kong over the course of 48 hours. If you're a Great British Bake Off fan, start with Ayoade's trip to Paris with original GBBO host Mel Giedroyc or the season two episode featuring current host Noel Fielding in Copenhagen . Other familiar faces include Paul Rudd in Helsinki and Bridesmaids' Chris O'Dowd in Vienna.

Somebody Feed Phil

This Netflix original follows host Phil Rosenthal, the creator of Everybody Loves Raymond , as he eats his way through cities like Bangkok , Lisbon, Mexico City , New Orleans ,   Buenos Aires , Cape Town, and Dublin. The hyper-positive show was called "impossibly optimistic," by former Traveler editor Paul Brady, who spoke with Rosenthal before the first season's premiere in 2018. Parts Unknown

You simply cannot have a list of the best travel shows and not feature the late Anthony Bourdain. In fact, he's on our list more than once. In Parts Unknown , the chef and travel personality circled the world many times over, in search of music, culture, humor, history, and—of course—really good food. Over 12 seasons (the last aired posthumously), Bourdain visited the indigenous Andes with Eric Ripert, the Sochi Winter Olympics, the Mississippi Delta, and, most famously, Hanoi with then-president Barack Obama. (That's season eight, episode two, if you want to jump right to it.)

Technically, Netflix's original show Connected is a science show, but that doesn't mean it isn't filled with travel. Plus, host Latif Nasser told us earlier this year that the show was built in the footsteps of Bourdain's Parts Unknown and No Reservations (with a dash of Bill Nye thrown inn). The show speaks to how the world is interconnected—like how Delaware's birds can offer clues about the Gulf's hurricane season or how sand from the Sahara impacts the Amazon. Throughout, you'll follow Nasser as he hopscotches around the world to speak with scientists to find out more.

Street Food

Made by the same folks behind Chef's Table (spoiler: it's also on this list), this show moves away from formal restaurant kitchens and onto the streets, for a guide to some of the world's best curbside meals and snacks . The show's first season is all about Asia, traveling to nine different countries to meet the people behind the food, like Jay Fai from Bangkok's Raan Jay Fai , a Michelin-starred street stall serving up tom yum soup, and Truoc (pictured left), who serves a variety of snail dishes in Ho Chi Minh City . Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted

Gordon Ramsey is involved, so of course this cooking and travel show is extreme. In the National Geographic –produced series, the Hell's Kitchen chef goes out of his element—and out of the kitchen—to learn cooking tips and tricks from locals in unusual locales, culminating in a cook-off of sorts to show off what he's picked up. Here, he heads to Peru's Sacred Valley to learn high altitude cooking, cooks seal with a Tlingit elder in Alaska , and learns about Berber food culture in Morocco. 

Carmen Sandiego

Many of us got our first lesson in geography from this trench coat–wearing master thief, and today's kids can too, thanks to the Netflix reboot of this animated series. This high-flying, Robin Hood–style caper takes kids (and parents) with Sandiego as she jet sets between Rio de Janeiro , Matsumoto in Japan, Amsterdam, Mumbai, and more. There are three seasons available and plenty of educational value here for mapheads—plus pretty stellar animation. Chef's Table: BBQ

While you can watch some of world’s most extraordinary chefs (like Dominque Crenn ; Peruvian Virgilio Martínez , the owner of Lima's Central restaurant; and Swede Magnus Nilsson ) as they create impossibly complicated dishes in the original Chef's Table, we've become partial to its latest iteration, which is all about barbecue. The Netflix original docuseries follows pitmasters like Tootsie Tomanetz—the 85-year-old spitfire pictured above who minds the brisket and sausage at Snow's, outside of Austin—and Rodney Scott, known for his Low Country–style pulled pork and ribs. Travels with My Father

The first season of this Netflix original, which came out in 2017, follows British stand-up comedian Jack Whitehall and his father, Michael, across Southeast Asia, tracking the duo as they finish the gap year Jack never got to complete, just a few years late (eight, to be exact). It's everything you'd expect: a Thai full moon party and, of course, a trip to Cambodia's Angkor Wat, but the moments in between are what make the show really worth watching. Now, in the three seasons that have followed, the father-son pair have road tripped through Transylvania , visited Chernobyl , and gotten into drag with Sydney queens. Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories

Set in a tiny Tokyo diner that's only open from midnight to 7 a.m., the fictional show follows the Midnight Diner's owner and clientele as they share their trials and joys, all while eating whatever the owner, called Master, dishes up. In the diner, pork miso soup is the go-to, but Master will cook visitors anything they order, as long as he's got the goods to make it. Episodes are a little over 20 minutes long, so it's the most bingeable of the bunch. Watch with subtitles and don't—seriously, don't—watch while hungry. There is nothing better than watching inspiring travel TV shows when you don’t get to travel. They are entertaining, helpful to plan your travels and open your mind (and heart) to new places.

I absolutely love watching travel shows on TV. While it’s true that I prefer doing the actual travelling, I’m like everybody else and I also enjoy staying at home and dreaming of my next destinations.

I spend a lot of time watching travel shows and find it to be not just entertaining, but enlightening!

Sometimes you will discover underrated places that you would have never thought of going. And that’s the great thing about it, you don’t only get to learn about the places you want to go. You discover new places!

It’s also a very good way to learn more about the culture of these places.

As you may know, I love discovering new cultures. I find all of them so incredibly interesting. Foreign languages, food, history… there is just so much to discover. It’s so interesting and exciting!

Here are some of the best travel TV shows to watch now!

1. Jack Whitehall: Travels with my father

Jack Whitehall is a famous British comedian. He is mainly known to be the posh lad in Fresh Meat (filmed in Manchester by the way 😉 ).

In real life, Jack Whitehall actually is a very posh Londoner. He comes from a wealthy family and never got the chance to go backpacking as many young people do.

On top of that, he always had quite a difficult relationship with his dad, who is 79.

This is why, in 2017, Jack Whitehall invites his dad, Michael, to go backpacking with him in Asia for a Netflix original series .

By that, I mean proper backpacking. Sleeping in hostels, taking cheap transportation, carrying a backpack… and guess what, his dad said yes!

This show is absolutely hilarious and a perfect mix between comedy and travel. If you need something to cheer you up and make you dream of foreign lands, it’s the perfect choice!

In the first season, they travel through countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia.

It’s so funny to watch as the dad is quite a character. He is a very posh person and obviously not quite happy about the lack of comfort.

If you like British humour, Jack and Michael Whitehall will crack you up!

The show had so much success that it was renewed for a second season in Europe . A continent that Michael famously voted to leave! In the third season, they go to America and here again, it takes a whole new dimension.

Give it a try, you will be hooked straight from the first episode! It’s so funny and arguably the best travel reality show on Netflix!

2. Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown

You may know Anthony Bourdain as a chef but did you know that he had a few travel shows as well?

My favourite is Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown .

This American food and travel show was produced by CNN and ran from 2013 to 2018. Sadly, Anthony died while working on a show about Strasbourg, France on the 8th of June 2018.

In this show, he travels the world and focuses on the lesser-known and underrated places.

He goes to pretty much any country you can think of and explores the culture and cuisine with locals. Very often he goes around with local guides, sometimes he also gets to meet famous personalities.

In his episode about Lyon in France, he goes for dinner with Paul Bocuse, the famous French chef.

Bourdain has this very unique way to explore the world. He sees the beauty in everything and always makes sure to be in perfect sync with local cultures.

He had this unique ability to see the world as the absolute beauty it really is and through Parts Unknown, shares his vision of the world’s cultures.

It’s not a show that I would categorise as funny, although there are some quirks. But it’s definitely the most interesting and passionate one of this list!

3. Down to Earth

Seasons:  1

This is a fun travel show / documentary to watch. It stars Zac Efron who travels around the world with wellness expert Darin Olien.

The goal of these travels is to discover more sustainable ways to live. They go everywhere around the world including Iceland, Sardinia and South America. 

Each destination highlight a specific sustainable lifestyle. For example, Sardinia in Italy is known as a blue zone. A blue zone is an area with more people reaching the age of 100 than the average.

When they get to Sardinia, they meet with locals and experts to try to understand how the way people live and eat has impacted their health.

Darin Olien is known to be big on super foods so you will also learn plenty about that when they go to South America.

All in all, this is a great show to watch as it perfectly mixes together fun and education.

4. BBC Race Across the World

Even though the Amazing Race is a concept available in almost all countries, it doesn’t exist in the UK.

But don’t you worry, the BBC thought that through and created its own program!

The concept of the Race across the world is a bit different though. In this show, you will follow 5 pairs of travellers on an epic race across the world.

In the first season, their mission is to go from London to Singapore without taking a single flight.

They are being given a bit of money, the equivalent of a flight ticket from London to Singapore ie about £1000. With this money, they have to go to Singapore without flying.

This means they have to find transport, accommodation and food for a month within that £500 budget per head. Each pair adopts a different strategy.

They take all sorts of transportation. Some hitchhike, some take the bus…

It’s a very entertaining thing to watch. You will surprise yourself trying to plan that trip as well!

5. Somebody Feed Phil

Seasons:  4

This Netflix Original is an excellent thing to watch if you love both travelling and food.

You will follow Philip Rosenthal on his trips around the world and discover the local delicacies.

There is no better way to understand the local culture than eating local dishes with the locals themselves and that’s what Phil is doing here.

From the floating markets in Thailand to the classic Mexican cantinas, he tries it all!

The best thing about this show is that you will discover so much more than just food and drinks.

He really tries to understand the local culture and why things are the way they are.

It’s also worth noting that Phil is a very happy and funny guy which makes it very pleasant to watch.

6. Instant Hotel

Instant Hotel is an Australian reality show that follows several teams of homeowners.

Each duo owns a holiday rental in Australia and will host the other contestants for a day and a night.

It’s a nice thing to watch if you love Australia or would like to visit one day.

You will get to see several states including Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Northern Territory.

Not only will you see some very famous locations such as Bondi Beach but will also get to discover some hidden gems.

There are 2 seasons available on Netflix.

7. Ugly Delicious

This is another food and travel TV show on Netflix. In this one, you will follow chef David Chang on his journey around the world.

A bit like Anthony Bourdain used to do, Chang is using food to tackle misconceptions and break down cultural barriers. 

Food is a powerful way to experience a country and learn more about the local culture. Chef Chang knows that and he shows you exactly how to!

He is also joined by guests including other chefs, artists, activists and plenty more. With him, you’ll discover many different regions including the USA, Asia and Europe.

8. Dark Tourist

In Dark Tourist, the journalist David Farrier focuses on something rarely talked about: Dark Tourism. Dark tourism is the fact of travelling to places associated with death or tragedy.

This type of travel is getting more and more popular and that’s why David Farrier goes to experience it and share with us his journey.

Dark Tourist is a very interesting show to watch as clearly, he is immersing himself into some culture and believes that you probably never even heard of before that.

Secondly, it can get quite funny and that Kiwi accent is always so cute!

Lastly, let’s be honest, it’s bloody weird! And clearly extremely interesting. I had no idea most of these things existed and although it can be creepy at times, it is quite interesting to know more about them.

9. Emily in Paris

Emily in Paris is a Netflix Original TV Show that was released in 2020. It was created by Darren Star (best known for “Sex and the City”).

It’s the story of Emily Cooper, an American girl, who moves to Paris to work in a French marketing agency.

Although it was argued that the show was full of clichés, it is still a very cool thing to watch. As a French person, I loved it!

It may not quite be representative of what a normal french life is but it highlights the most magical aspects of Paris! It will make you dream!

Emily Cooper is played by Lily Collins (British-American actress) but most of the other main characters are French which makes the show even better!

They all speak English (some with a better accent than others).

It’s a feel-good travel show that will make you want to visit Paris straight away!

And if you do, you will be able to visit Emily in Paris filming locations!

10. Griff’s Great Australian Rail Trip

Looking for a travel show about Australia? Here you go!

This 2020 docuseries is one of the best things to watch before going to Australia.

Here you will see Griff Rhys Jones, a Welsh comedian, taking on an amazing train journey from Perth to Sydney and Darwin to Adelaide.

Not only is it a great way to see what the Indian Pacific and The Ghan trains are like but you will also get to learn so much about the Australian outback and culture.

You can tell that Griff is truly fascinated by Australia and he will definitely make you want to jump on a plane straight away!

11. The Kindness Diaries

The Kindness Diaries is one of the best travel programmes if you also love motorbikes (don’t worry if you don’t though, it’s fun either way but if you do like motorbikes, this is the ultimate best travel series for you).

You will follow the adventures of Leon who travels around the world on a vintage motorcycle relying solely on the kindness of strangers for accommodation, food and even petrol.

This is an extraordinary travel tv program. Not only is it interesting and fun but seeing the kindness of people all around the world is simply the most moving thing you can see.

It will leave you quite emotional on a few occasions!

12. James May: Our man in Japan

You may know James May as one of the presenters of Top Gear. But he’s got way more in store than you’d think.

In this Amazon Prime original , James May goes to Japan and experiences many aspects of Japanese Culture.

He goes to all the main cities including Tokyo and Kyoto but also some more remote places in the Japanese countryside.

James May is a typical British guy and definitely knows how to come up with the best comments!

Just picture him, in Japan, not speaking a single word of Japanese, clueless about the culture… and yet going for it!

It’s a very interesting mix of fun and culture.

If you love Japan, you will definitely like it but even if you don’t have any specific interest in this country, you will still enjoy it, I promise!

13. Gordon, Gino and Fred’s Road Trip

If you are looking for comedy travel shows, look no further! This one will make you laugh out loud!

This 2-season show features 3 famous chefs in the UK: Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo, and Fred Serieix.

Just picture it for a moment, we are putting together a British man, an Italian man and a French man, in a same place and make them travel the world to discover the best foods.

The result? One of the best celebrity travel shows we can think of!

It is a very cool show and you get to discover their home countries of Italy , France and Scotland but also some other destinations such as Texas or Mexico.

14. By Any Means

Seasons:  1 (6 episodes)

This one is for all the adventurers out there! Unlike some of the shows out there that are quite commercialised, this one is very pure and honest. You will be following Charley Boorman, an Irishman who decides to go from his small hometown in Ireland all the way down to Australia without flying.

Charley is not doing all of that on his own. He is with a team which makes it even more entertaining.

In the first episode, you will see how they went about planning the trip itself which was pretty challenging back in 2008. After that, the good stuff starts and you follow them on this incredible journey.

It’s a great way to learn more about hidden gems and underrated travel destinations.

15. The Grand Tour

The Grand Tour is British motoring show featuring Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May. Although it is known for cars, it’s also an excellent travel TV show to watch.

The famous trio used to present Top Gear for BBC. In 2015, BBC didn’t renew Jeremy Clarkson’s contract.

At this point, his friends decided to follow him and they signed a contract with Amazon Prime . The Grand Tour was born!

On the Grand Tour, Clarkson, Hammond and May embark the most incredible vehicles and set off to explore some of the most beautiful countries in the world!

They visit some famous places but also adventure themselves in very remote, off-the-beaten-path, locations. This includes Madagascar, Morocco, Namibia, Italy and many more!

16. Amazing Race

The Amazing Race is an American reality TV show. I’ve watched every season of the French equivalent, Pekin Express.

As much as I would love to talk about this show, I appreciate that watching a show in french might not be of your liking!

But it’s ok because the Amazing Race is pretty much the same thing. There is an American and Canadian version.

The concept is simple. There are several teams of two racing around the world. In each episode, they have to go to a certain destination with no money.

Therefore their only option is to hitchhike and get locals to accommodate them for free.

Along the way, other missions are given to them. These can be hikes, riding… all sorts of things.

It’s the perfect show to discover many countries in a different way. The Amazing Race has it all: competition, culture, landscapes, fun… A must see!

And there are over 30 seasons available so plenty to binge-watch!

17. Travel Man

If you are looking for another funny British travel show, Travel Man is for you!

In this channel 4 show, the host Richard Ayoade explores all major cities around the world. The goal? Visiting as many tourist spots in the minimum amount of time.

When I say that, don’t get me wrong. He is very well organised and makes sure to go on a guided tour most of the time.

This means he actually embeds himself very well in the culture of the place he is visiting.

But where loads of travel shows focus on hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path destinations, Travel Man does the opposite. He goes for the most famous landmarks!

And it’s a good thing because even though these places are touristy, they are famous for a reason!

Richard Ayoade is a very funny man and will make you laugh out loud quite a few times!

Somehow, he always does his best not to enjoy himself which makes the whole show absolutely hilarious!

This show is perfect if you are planning city breaks or are into architecture.

If you are an adventure and after nature discovery, it won’t be what you are looking for.

18. Anthony Bourdain: The Layover

The late Anthony Bourdain was famous as a celebrity chef. But he gained an army of new fans with his excellent travel series, Anthony Bourdain: The Layover .

Showcasing Bourdain’s swift visits to various cities around the world, the show aired on the Travel Channel from 2011 to 2013.

It focused on how to make the most of a short layover or brief stopover in a city.

Each episode featured Bourdain spending 24 to 48 hours in a featured city, providing viewers with a fast-paced, no-nonsense guide to experiencing the best food, culture and attractions a place had to offer.

He often sought the help of local experts and friends, including chefs and celebrities, to uncover hidden gems and popular hotspots.

Visiting everywhere from New York City to Istanbul, the show is renowned for Bourdain’s candid and unfiltered commentary, his willingness to try exotic and unconventional dishes and his deep appreciation for the diverse cultures he encountered.

19. All Joanna Lumley’s Shows

Joanna Lumley is a famous British actress. You may know her from  The New Avengers  or more recently  The Wolf of Wall Street.

She is also well known for her travel documentaries.

She has done quite a few of them over the years and they are all fantastic things to watch. The most recent one was released in 2020 and is called Joanna Lumley’s Hidden Caribbean: Havana to Haiti.

If you love the Caribbean and want to learn more about this part of the world, watching Joanna Lumley’s TV show will be the perfect thing to do.

It is considered a documentary but like most travel shows, it’s quite funny on top of being interesting.

In this one, she goes to Cuban and Haiti. Local culture, quirky situations, funny humour… it has it all!

This one is very similar to Jack Whitehall Travels with my father. On paper at least.

In this case, the dad is the celebrity. Bradley Walsh is a famous British comedian and presenter. If he never particularly wanted to travel, his 21-year old son, Barney, decided otherwise!

Together they go on a road trip in America in an RV. The series started in 2019 and can be watched on Amazon . There are 2 seasons, 10 episodes in total.

In this case, they don’t go for a budget-travel version. They keep their comfort but try very unexpected activities in the States.

It’s more about the contact with the locals which is quite interesting.

As you would expect from the Walsh’s, it’s also very funny!

They go from the Florida Keys up to Georgia. So if you are interested in knowing more about Florida and the east coast states, this one’s for you!

21. An Idiot Abroad

An Idiot Abroad is one the quirkiest travel show that you can find.

Here is the plot: the main person, Karl Pilkington has never wanted to travel and will be forced to.

Basically, at the beginning of the episode, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (who created the show) send Karl abroad with instructions. They put together a bucket list and he has to do everything.

It’s so funny! I promise, this British show will crack you up!

The thing that makes it so entertaining is the fact that Karl Pilkington has no interest in travelling and ends up doing all these things while the other two stay in the UK!

If you want to have a good laugh, An Idiot Abroad is the way to go!

22. The Americas with Simon Reeve

If you are looking for the best travel shows on BBC iplayer, this one is for you!

It features Simon Reeve, a famous British adventurer, exploring the Americas.

The first season includes 5 episodes during which you discover some of the most famous places in the Americas such as Machu Picchu in Peru but also some very remote places in the Amazon rainforest.

Here you will follow Sam Heughan and Graham McTavish, the stars of Outlander, around Scotland and discover plenty about the local culture.

This includes whisky, bagpipes and of course, stunning landscapes.

Not only is it a very interesting show to watch but the hosts are so funny and it’s so great to see them in another context than Outlander.

24. Long Way Up

Premiering in 2020, Long Way Up is part of the Long Way series of documentary travel TV shows, which follows motorcycle journeys led by longtime actors and friends Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor.

In Long Way Up , Charley and Ewan embark on an epic adventure, riding electric Harley Davidson LiveWire motorbikes from the southern tip of South America in Argentina to Los Angeles in the USA.

The journey covers over 13,000 miles and 13 countries, taking them through Chile, Bolivia, Peru , Ecuador, Colombia, Central America and Mexico between their start and finish points.

Some of the most memorable moments include navigating challenging terrains like the Atacama Desert and the Andes Mountains, dealing with extreme weather conditions, and experiencing the cultural diversity of the countries they visit.

25. Booze Traveler

Booze Traveler was a popular Travel Channel television series from 2014 to 2018. Its host was the effervescent Jack Maxwell – a well-known Boston-born actor and television personality.

Each episode featured Maxwell embarking on a worldwide adventure to learn about different cultures through their alcoholic beverages and drinking customs.

Sadly, the show was not renewed for a fifth series because Maxwell was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma while filming the last few episodes of this travel series.

Considered one of the best travel TV series out of the UK, Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby debuted in 2017 and quickly became popular amongst those who aspire to the finer things in life.

ITV channel

ITV Channel offers some amazing TV shows such as the Bradley Walsh one or Gordon, Gino and Fred Road Trip. You can get a free trial for ITV here.

Disney + / Hulu

Although these are no TV shows, I’d recommend you to watch some Disney movies . Loads of them are perfect to discover new places.

We don’t always realise it but they are very good to embed yourself into a foreign culture.

Channel 4 is a free-to-air television channel in the UK. You can go to their websites and watch everything for free.

There are some ads but they are pretty short.

7 things you should know before traveling to Brazil

Just mention that you’re planning a trip to Brazil, and the idea will instantly conjure up images of sunny beaches and the infectious rhythm of a samba beat or the sultry melodies of bossa nova. 

From the iconic yellow and blue kit of its national soccer team, the flamboyant outfits of the Carnaval dancers, and the famously fruity headpiece of Carmen Miranda, Brazil’s cultural impression on the world has been wide-reaching. But as a Brazilian-American it always surprises me how little others know about the vast country’s many diverse regions and day-to-day customs. 

Growing up snacking on pão de queijo (cheese bread) and brigadeiros  (chocolate truffles), I’ve been visiting Brazil since I was a kid and regularly return to visit family and explore new regions. 

There are endless ways to experience Brazil, but these are the top things to know if you want to plan a trip to Brazil that goes above and beyond.

1. There’s more than just beaches and jungles

The energy of Copacabana Beach and the alluring biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforest may have captured the world’s attention, but that’s really the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Brazil’s natural beauty. 

Adventurous nature lovers will find Brazil to be a treasure trove that contains a wealth of geographical diversity.

In the northeastern regions, you can explore the massive dunes and natural swimming pools in the states of Ceará  and Maranhão or venture to the landlocked state of Tocantins, where a vast savannah is home to the remarkably unique park of Jalapão . 

National parks like Chapada Diamantina and Chapada dos Veadeiros stun visitors with their mountain vistas and waterfalls, not to mention the staggering power of Iguaçu, one of the world’s largest waterfalls made up of over 200 cascades.

2. There are more urban hubs beyond Rio and São Paulo

While Rio de Janeiro boasts Brazil’s most iconic skyline and São Paulo is a mega-metropolis that hosts many of the country’s cultural and business institutions, these are hardly the only urban centers in Brazil worth visiting. 

Architecture fans should plan a trip to the capital city of Brasilia , where the work of Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer takes center stage, while gastronomically inclined travelers should check out Belo Horizonte , the capital of Minas Gerais, a state renowned by Brazilians for its cuisine. 

Up north, Salvador is a center for exploring the epicenter of Afro-Brazilian culture, which is the source of the martial art of capoeira and feijoada  (a meaty bean stew), Brazil’s national dish.

3. Brazil is a cultural melting pot

The USA is hardly the only cultural stew in the Western hemisphere. Brazilian culture melds together the customs and traditions of the indigenous, Afro-Brazilan and immigrant communities.  

In São Paulo, the neighborhood of Liberdade is home to a strong Japanese-Brazilian community; in southern states, you'll see the influence of German immigrants in the region's cross-timbered houses. 

Even the food has Lebanese and Italian roots, with kibbeh  (fried bulgar wheat and meatballs) and pizza being some of the most popular late-night snacks among Brazilians. 

The national dish feijoada , originates from Afro-Brazilian and indigenous communities who used cassava flour long before the arrival of Europeans in Brazil. This flour is a key ingredient for farofa (toasted cassava flour), the most popular side dish to have with your feijoada . 

4. A little Portuguese will be a huge asset

Outside of the traditional tourism sectors, you won’t find many Brazilians who speak English, and whatever your level of Spanish may be, it probably won’t get you far enough.

In addition to studying basic phrases , you should also prime yourself on pronunciation. For example, an r at the beginning of a word makes an h sound, which means the “rio” in Rio de Janeiro is pronounced more like “hio.”

It may seem like a small detail, but it’s an essential thing to be aware of should you ever need to ask for directions.

5. A kiss on the cheek is a customary greeting

In a social situation, a kiss on the cheek is the routine greeting among Brazilians – even if you’re just meeting someone for the first time. 

It doesn’t need to be a full kiss, but cheek-to-cheek contact with a smacking sound is the standard. It’s typically expected between two women or a man and a woman, but men often opt for a handshake.

If the situation is more formal, like a business meeting or a simple shopping exchange, you can skip the kiss. The number of kisses also vary by region: in São Paulo it’s one, in Rio it’s two, and in Bahia , it can be three or more.

6. Safety should be top of mind in urban areas

Crime is a widespread issue throughout Brazil, especially in large cities and the favelas  usually located in the city outskirts. Favela tours are possible, but the business is controversial as many people believe it to be exploitative and unethical. 

Brazilians will generally warn tourists against wearing jewelry when out and openly carrying expensive electronics, especially phones.

This has happened to me many times when I’m out shooting photos, as many people stop to point to my camera with a concerned “ cuidado ” (be careful). Keep your wits about you in crowded areas – especially ones with many tourists – and avoid walking alone at night.

7. It’s illegal to drive in flip-flops

Even though Brazil is famous for its Havaianas , Brazilians are serious when it comes to road safety. Flip-flops can easily get caught on a car's pedals and cause accidents, so if you are caught driving with them, you may get fined. However, it is acceptable to drive barefoot if you don’t have any other footwear on you.

The couple, whose names are Selima and Felix, purchased a yellow school bus in Florida for 9500 USD. After working on it for three months, they transformed it into their “Loft on Wheel”, a comfortable, spacious, and well-equipped adventure bus.

In “Somebody Feel Phil”, the creator of “Everybody Loves Raymond,” Phil Rosenthal, travels the world to indulge in the scrumptious local cuisine and to learn more about the culture of these destinations.

There are currently four seasons on Netflix and each episode features a different city around the world. This documentary does a great job of portraying local customs and traditions and viewers will feel like they’re actually in that city with the locals.

Phil has a childlike wonder to him when he’s learning about the different cultures and he answers basically any potential questions the viewers could have about the destination. One of the best parts about the documentary is watching Phil turn the strangers he meets into his family.

Jack Whitehall is a British comedian who attended private school and has a somewhat disjointed relationship with his father Michael because of this. Jack also never got to take a gap year before going to university so season one of Travels with my Father is all about Jack finally embarking on a traditional ‘gap year’ trip to Southeast Asia. The twist is he takes his father with him so they can strengthen their bond.

The series takes place in Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam and highlights some of the gap year activities that can be done including full moon parties on the beach and visiting Angkor Wat. By the end of their travels, they reflect on what they have learned about each other and themselves.

The crowning of the main dome in the cathedral was a major achievement during this time frame and it was really fascinating to see how this was depicted and shown in development and the struggles of the Medici family to get this undertaking done.

Also, it was interesting to see how easy it was during that time frame to create wealth and also lose it depending on your affiliations and business relationships with the pope and other influential rulers of that time.

Watch the Medici’s on Netflix and if you visit Florence, you’ll gain a better understanding of the Medici fame and fortune in the area.

3 surfers from Australia and the U.S. were killed in Mexico's Baja California. Here's what we know.

Two Australians and an American were doing what they loved on the stunning, largely isolated stretch of Baja California's Pacific coast. Their last images on social media showed them sitting and gazing at the waves.

What happened to end their lives may have been as random as a passing pickup truck full of people with ill intent. The  surfers were shot in the head , their bodies dumped in a covered well miles away. Here's what we know:

Who were the victims?

Brothers Jake and Callum Robinson from Australia and American Jack Carter Rhoad had apparently stopped to surf the breaks between Punta San José, about 50 miles south of Ensenada, and La Bocana, further north on the coast.

Callum Robinson's Instagram page showed several images from the trio's Mexico trip: enjoying beers with their feet up in a bar, lazing in a jacuzzi, eating roadside tacos, looking out at the surf.

Callum, who was six-foot-four, had played in the U.S. Premier Lacrosse League, which left a  message on its website  saying the lacrosse world was "heartbroken by the tragic loss" of the trio.

"We offer our hearts, support and prayers to the Robinson and Rhoad Families, as well as all who loved Callum, Jake and Jack," it said.

On social media, his devastated girlfriend shared a black and white photo of the couple kissing, with the message: "You are one of one. I will love you forever."

In another photo she shared, in which the two can be seen embracing,  she wrote: "My heart is shattered into a million pieces. I don't have the words right now."

Jake Robinson was a doctor in Perth, according to Australian media.

Rhoad was engaged and set to marry Natalie Weirtz on Aug. 17 in Columbus, Ohio, according to a  Zola  online wedding registry. A GoFundMe which was launched to "rally support for Natalie" had raised over $57,000 as of Tuesday morning.

"In the wake of the heartbreaking loss of Carter Rhoad, Callum Robinson, and Jake Robinson, our hearts ache with grief for their families, friends, and community," reads a separate GoFundMe set up for Rhoad's family.

What happened to them?

The three friends were attacked there on April 28 or 29.

As soon as police arrived at their last known camp site, it was clear that something had gone violently wrong.

There were bloodstains and marks "as if heavy objects had been dragged," leading to suspicions of an attack, the Baja California state prosecutor's office said in an attempt to reconstruct the scene.

Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez described what likely would have been moments of terror that ended the trip for the three men.

She theorized the killers drove by and saw the foreigners' pickup truck and tents and wanted to steal the truck's tires and other parts. But "when (the foreigners) came up and caught them, surely, they resisted."

She said that's when the killers would have shot the men. She said they were likely not attacked because they were tourists. "The evidence suggests they (the killers) did not know where they were from."

Andrade Ramírez said the reconstruction of events was based on the forensic examiner's reports, noting all three had bullet wounds to the head.

There was a hurried attempt to destroy evidence. The foreigners' tents were apparently burned. The pickup truck was driven miles away and burned. The assailants' truck was later found with a gun inside.

Then, at "a site that is extremely hard to get to," the bodies were dumped into a well about 4 miles (6 kilometers) away. Investigators were surprised when, underneath the bodies of the three foreigners, a fourth body was found that had been there much longer.

"They had to have previous knowledge of it," Andrade Ramírez said of the attackers, acknowledging the possibility they were behind the previous killing.

The well had been covered with boards. "It was literally almost impossible to find it," Andrade Ramírez said. It took two hours to winch the bodies out.

Who are the suspects?

Prosecutors have said they were questioning three people in the killings. Two were caught with methamphetamines. One of them, a woman, had one of the victims' cellphones when she was caught. Prosecutors said the two were being held pending drug charges but continue to be suspects in the killings.

A third man was arrested on charges of a crime equivalent to kidnapping, but that was before the bodies were found. It was unclear if he might face more charges.

The third man was believed to have directly participated in the killings. In keeping with Mexican law, prosecutors identified him by his first name, Jesús Gerardo, alias "el Kekas," a slang word that means quesadillas, or cheese tortillas.

Andrade Ramírez said he had a criminal record that included drug dealing, vehicle theft and domestic violence, adding, "We are certain that more people were involved."

She emphasized that she could not discuss anything related to the suspects, or their possible statements, because that was not allowed under Mexican law and might prejudice the case against them.

Andrade Ramírez noted that the victims' families said the brothers and Rhoad had come many times to the seaside spot and never had any problem. This time, however, "there was no way to ask for help when the attackers showed up."

In a statement to CBS News, the FBI said it "continues to work with our international law enforcement partners in resolving this ongoing situation" and has been in contact with the family of the American victim.

"While we cannot comment on specifics to preserve the sanctity of the investigative and legal processes, along with protecting the privacy of those impacted, we can assure you that we are assessing every tip. If credible, we will pursue those leads with rigor," the FBI said.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday he had requested an opportunity to speak to the brothers' parents Deborah and Martin Robinson.

"This is a terrible tragedy and my heart goes out to them. To identify these wonderful young men and they have been travelling in Mexico. We've been dealing with them through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. I've indicated that I wish to speak to them at an appropriate time of their choosing," Albanese told reporters in the Queensland state town of Rockhampton.

RIO DE JANEIRO − More than a million people thronged Brazil's Copacabana beach for a free Madonna concert on Saturday, braving the heat to see the end of her "Celebration" world tour .

The sand and oceanfront boulevard around Rio de Janeiro's famed beach were filled for several blocks by a crowd the city estimated at 1.6 million.

Many had been there for hours or even days to get a good spot, while richer fans anchored in dozens of boats near the beach and onlookers crowded beachfront apartments.

Firefighters sprayed water before the concert, when temperatures exceeded 86 degrees Fahrenheit, to cool fans gathered near the pop queen's stage, and drinking water was distributed for free. Temperatures were around 81 F during the late night show.

Madonna, 65, performed songs such as "Like a Prayer," "Vogue" and "Express Yourself" for more than two hours starting at 10:45 p.m. as she wound up the greatest hits tour that started late last year.

"Rio, here we are, in the most beautiful place in the world, with the ocean, the mountains, Jesus," Madonna told the crowd, referring to the city's huge mountaintop Christ the Redeemer statue. "Magic."

Brazilian pop artists Anitta and Pabllo Vittar, as well as younger musicians from samba schools, participated in the show.

More than 3,000 police officers were deployed around the concert area, where the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart have also drawn million-strong crowds. The authorities used a crowd-management strategy similar to their handling of the city's famous New Year's Eve celebrations.

Brazilian authorities have stepped up their vigilance to head off heat-related health problems after a young Brazilian fan died from heat exhaustion at one of Taylor Swift's Eras tour shows last year.

Rio's state and city governments said they spent 20 million reais ($3.9 million) on the concert, while the rest was financed by private sponsors. The authorities estimate the concert could bring about 300 million reais to Rio's economy.
