Showcase globes, maps, suitcases, and other accessories from your travels throughout your home.

Andrea Beck served as garden editor at BHG and her work has appeared on Food & Wine, Martha Stewart, MyRecipes, and more.

travel wall ideas

Most everyone has souvenirs from their travels, whether it’s shells from the beach, novelty T-shirts, or even just plenty of photos. Luckily, there are plenty of both subtle and bold ways to incorporate your love for travel into your home.

Hanging photos is simple, but you can also turn them into a statement by creating a gallery wall or even unique wallpaper. Or use photos of places you dream of going, maps, or subway routes for more graphic, abstract art. Small touches can also add elements of travel to your home. Vintage suitcases come in many colors and can be displayed to add extra storage or serve as an end table. Use these travel decor ideas as inspiration, then adapt them to fit your favorite places and trips.

Seashell Display

Cameron Sadeghpour

Large seashells from a beach vacation double as tabletop travel decor and as a way to display Polaroids. Smaller shells can also nest inside a larger shell as a way to show them off on a shelf or table. Place them next to a blue glass lamp reminiscent of sea glass to tie the coastal theme into the rest of the room.

Abstract Travel Wall Decor

Adam Albright

City maps make stunning travel wall decor and are a great way to remember some of your favorite (or dream) destinations. These pictures lean abstract, using the city streets to create a leaf-like design. The shades of green used on each map complement dark green wall paint .

Subtle Travel Decor

Ann VanderWiel Wilde

Small accents can help show your love for a destination without dominating a room. In this alcove, a simple metal sign shaped like the state of Minnesota hangs above a rustic dresser with other memorabilia. This travel wall decor fits into almost any room and can take the shape of a favorite country or city skyline.

Map Wall Art

Using maps as wall decor is an easy way to incorporate graphic art in muted pastel colors. Despite varying color palettes, this trio of maps feels cohesive thanks to neutral frames with white mats. Bold navy walls help further showcase the travel decor.

Suitcase Bar Cart

Cocktails (or zero-proof drinks ) can definitely be part of a great vacation, so it’s only natural to incorporate travel decor into your home bar cart . A vintage suitcase is the focal point of this bar cart and acts as unique storage for a variety of bottles and bar tools. Antique drawers contain glassware and match the feel of the old-fashioned suitcase.

Seashell Storage

Brie Williams

Seashells are a popular beach souvenir, but finding a place to store them can be tricky. These embellished boxes are a beautiful way to display shells . Each box features a mosaic of shells while also providing storage on a living room mantel . Complete the look with other ocean souvenirs, like driftwood or sea glass, and vases and artwork with blue accents.

Entryway Travel Decor

David A Land

Display travel decor in your home’s entryway for a reminder of your favorite destinations every time you walk in the door. This console table includes a travel bag that's ready to be grabbed for any adventure. Houseplants also help give the space a tropical feel, and the tabletop provides a surface to display travel photos.

Travel Wallpaper

In addition to small accents, you can also add travel decor to your home on a larger scale. World maps paper the walls of this bedroom . The muted colors complement natural wood furniture and blue accents on the bed. The wallpaper contributes eye-catching texture without overwhelming the space.

Showcase Souvenirs

KIM CORNELISON

This living room features several souvenirs that work together in a subtle way. A gallery wall incorporates map artwork; its bright colors and abstract shapes coordinate with a globe perched on top of a bookcase. A bright blue vintage suitcase on one shelf nods to vacationing and pairs well with the navy velvet sofa .

Historical Wall Decor

Alisal Ranch

These large-scale framed maps act almost as an accent wall in this dining space. It includes historical boundaries and territory lines from the early days of the U.S., and its rustic appearance matches the wood-plank wall and vintage chairs. A large map can also serve as a way of tracking your travels across the country.

Bookshelf Display

If you enjoy collecting art on your travels, display them together on a shelf to blend souvenirs with your personal style. This bookcase includes a variety of vases, figurines, and sculptures from a variety of destinations. Natural materials like wood and earthy colors tie everything together.

Mural Accent Wall

John Bessler

Large-scale wallpaper prints can be overwhelming, but using them on an accent wall is a stylish way to add a bold pattern to a room. This living room has a tropical feel thanks to the blue and green mural of palm trees. The colors tie in with the area rug, and the graphic print contrasts the black-and-white striped seating.

Vibrant Color Palette

Dustin Halleck

The rich jewel tones of this library create a luxurious feeling. Stacked vintage suitcases serve as an end table while matching a floral rug and dark cobalt walls. Shelves near the seating area provide an opportunity to display travel souvenirs like prints, decorative boxes, and figurines.

Surfing Inspiration

Chad R. Mellon

Add a nod to the beach without displaying shells or pictures of the coast. Instead, hang a surfboard patterned with typography for a sunny, ocean vibe that upgrades a blank wall. Pair with a wood vanity and blue bathroom floor tiles for a casual coastal aesthetic.

Photo Wall Treatment

A repeating pattern of coastal photos creates a bold but still neutral wallpaper in this bedroom. Customize walls with your own photos, or find a print that features professional photos from a dream destination. Pair with a blue painted ceiling and geometric light fixture to turn the room into a beachy paradise.

Coastal Travel Decor

Bring the beach to a small area of your home. In this room, seashells and starfish are displayed alongside ceramics featuring shades of blue. The seaside collection and cool colors help bring a coastal feel to a section of the room where dishes and serving platters are stored.

DIY Nightstand

CARSON DOWNING

Vintage suitcases take on a new function with this DIY bedroom decor. Stack three on top of each other to create just the right height for a nightstand next to the bed . Pair with a lampshade patterned with a map of the country to really highlight a travel theme.

Tropical Decor

Carson Downing

Large-scale botanical wallpaper creates a tropical aesthetic in this bedroom. The print complements green painted flooring and a leafy bedspread. Natural accents, including a woven leather headboard and rattan side table, make this room feel like a tropical destination.

Decorate with Globes

Kritsada Panichgul.

Go all-out with travel decor with a shelf full of globes. Here, the globes feature similar colors and are grouped by size for a cohesive look. Instead of buying new globes, shop secondhand or thrift stores for vintage varieties.

Dining Room Souvenir Display

Several decor items work together to create travel-inspired style in this dining room . A large print of a beach scene provides seaside inspiration, while a large shell and a piece of driftwood act as centerpieces for the table and credenza. A pendant light with natural fibers completes the look.

Footsteps of a Dreamer

70+ World Travel Themed Home Decor Ideas

Pretty soon, I’ll have my first place of my own (I’ve moved out before, but I was always in some sort of dorm), and I’m super excited to buy all the furniture, decor, and everything else that goes with getting your own place. Given my very obvious travel addiction, I thought it would make sense for a lot of the home decor in my new apartment to be travel themed. I can’t make EVERYTHING travel themed (my boyfriend would kick me out before we even moved in), but let’s just say people won’t have to guess what I had in mind when decorating our new place. So, if you are moving into a new place, or just looking to do some redecorating, check out these world travel themed home decor ideas!

Travel Inspired Living Room Decorations

Travel throw pillows.

Pillows are a great way to add just a touch of travel decor to a living room. They’re not overly obnoxious, but still obvious. Plus, since they come in so many different colors, it’s not too terribly difficult to find one that would match your couch!

travel wall ideas

Stacked Travel Chests

I found out real fast when looking at furniture that end tables are surprisingly expensive. So, when I saw these on Amazon, I thought it was a really cool idea. Instead of the traditional end table (that may or may not have a small drawer to put things in), why not get suitcase styled chests? They’re stack-able and can store way more than your traditional end table.

travel wall ideas

Suitcase Shelves

I found these in one of the home decor stores I had visited and thought it was a cute idea. Instead of the traditional wooden shelves, get creative and use shelves that were decorated to look like suitcases. They’ll match your suitcase end tables!

travel wall ideas

Travel Coasters

If you don’t already have some souvenir drink coasters from your various trips around the world, you can get some world map drink coasters to make sure your new, nice tables don’t get ruined by condensation from drinking glasses.

travel wall ideas

World Map Tissue Box Cover

I don’t think too many people use tissue box covers anymore, but I thought it was one of the more unique travel decor ideas. If nothing else, it’s a conversation piece!

travel wall ideas

Traditional Globes

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of travel decor? A globe of course! You can’t decorate your new place with a travel theme and not have at least one globe around.

travel wall ideas

Travel Themed Dining Room Decor

Travel placemats.

Like I mentioned above, once you get that nice, new table, you don’t want it to be ruined from moisture from cold drinks or hot plates. Placemats are an easy and common fix to that problem. If you’re going to be buying placemats anyway, might as well make them travel themed, right?

travel wall ideas

World Map Table Runner

If dinner placemats aren’t enough, why not complete the look with a matching table runner?

travel wall ideas

World Travel Bedroom Decor

Travel lamp.

Looking for something cool and unique to show off to all of your friends? Then you have to check out this floating globe lamp! It uses magnets to make the globe levitate and it even spins around like a traditional globe! It has LEDs built into the frame to make it light up and look even cooler! Of course, you can always go with the more traditional travel home decor too…

travel wall ideas

World Map Bed Comforter

Do you dream of traveling the world? I thought so! Why not go to sleep surrounded by a map of all the places you dream of visiting?

travel wall ideas

Travel Pillow Cases

Of course, you can’t have a world map bed comforter and not have matching pillow cases. You just can’t do it.

travel wall ideas

Travel Themed Bathroom Decor

Travel inspired shower curtains.

Since most showers require some sort of shower curtain (unless you don’t mind lots of water getting all over the floor), having a travel themed shower curtain is an easy way to add a touch of travel to your home life. It’s simple, and separate from the rest of the rooms in the house (in case you don’t want your guests overwhelmed by travel decor the moment they walk into your new place).

travel wall ideas

World Map Towels

If you are looking to make the entire bathroom travel themed (instead of just having a touch of it), you can also get bath towels that are travel themed. It’s especially nice if you have a rack where you can sort of hang them on display when not in use.

travel wall ideas

Travel Inspired Kitchen Items

Travel themed alcohol items.

Even if you’re not into the “travel decor” thing, you can still add a bit of travel to your home life. You can break out these glasses when you’ve brought home some souvenir drinks from your most recent destination.

travel wall ideas

World Map Plates

If you don’t have a big dinning room table, or aren’t really the type of person to use placemats and a table runner, you can still add a bit of travel decor to meal time with these cool looking plates!

travel wall ideas

Travel Inspired Napkins

My mom always gives me a hard time because I have a bad habit of wiping my hands on my jeans instead of using a napkin (especially when eating greasy or salty foods), but if I had these napkins, I might be a little more inclined to use them (hint-hint mom: these would make a good moving gift).

travel wall ideas

World Map Cutting Board

Cutting boards are another one of those more subtle items that don’t necessarily get put on display. Since most traditional cutting boards are typically pretty bland, you can spice yours up by getting a travel decorated one.

travel wall ideas

Travel Themed Office Decor

Push pin cork globe.

My boyfriend and I are to turning our second bedroom into an office since both of us have computer desks. It’s the perfect place to put a tiny globe like this one. Plus, it’s exciting being able to put a new pin in it every time we go someplace new.

travel wall ideas

Globe Book Ends

I LOVE books. Unfortunately I don’t have as much time to read as I used to (which I think is a shame given how much I really loved it), but I’m really proud of my bookshelves and all the books that sit on them. Plus, I’ve always loved the feel of sitting in a library (especially those rustic ones you see in movies). I figured why not combine some of my biggest passions and add a little travel decor to my bookshelves?

travel wall ideas

Book Box Covers

If you’ve never heard of book boxes, don’t feel guilty. I hadn’t heard of them either until I started shopping for home decor! Book boxes are great for those book lovers (like me) that want their books to remain in mint condition. You can put your favorite books in book boxes to protect them from dust and moisture. Plus you can give your bookshelves more of a universal look (like the rustic library I mentioned above).

travel wall ideas

Pencil Holder

Because no desk would be complete without a pencil or pen holder.

travel wall ideas

Travel Wall Decor

Decorative world maps.

This is what usually comes to mind when you think of travel decor (and usually some of the first results when looking online). You can always go with the traditional, school-like world map, but there are some really cool looking world maps out there if you’re looking for something a little more unique.

travel wall ideas

Scratch Off World Maps

In more recent years, scratch off world maps have become more popular. They’re a great way to showcase all of the different places you’ve been! My mom got me one for Christmas and I absolutely love it. However, all of the places I’ve been are pretty small, so it doesn’t look like I’ve scratched anything off, but I’m working on it!

travel wall ideas

Wall Clocks

This is another one of more simple travel decor ideas. It’s a common household decoration and easy to customize to your style. Plus, there are lots of different options out there, so it isn’t too difficult to find one you like.

travel wall ideas

Word Art and Hangings

You can find all sorts of quotes that have been turned into travel decor. I feel like almost every home decor store that I’ve walked into has had some sort of wall piece with an inspiration adventure quote on it. Even if you’re not looking to go all out with the travel theme, they’re something small and nice you can hang on the wall to express your passion for travel.

travel wall ideas

Other Travel Decorating Ideas

World map welcome mat.

What better way to welcome guests than to welcome them to your adventures? No better way to set the travel theme than to have it be the first thing you see!

travel wall ideas

Light Switch Covers

I don’t know if I would replace every light switch cover in my new place with a travel inspired one, but I thought it was a unique way to incorporate travel into home decor. At this point though, the rest of the place is already travel themed, might as well make the light switches travel themed too.

travel wall ideas

Outlet Covers

If you’ve got travel themes lights switch covers, it only makes sense that you have travel inspired outlet covers too. If you have one, you just have to have the other!

travel wall ideas

And that’s it for my long list of travel themed home decor! What did you think? Will you be including any of these items the next time you decide to do some redecorating? Let me know in the comments below!

Travel themed home decor

Simple home decor tips to add love for travel into your home

This month, as we celebrate World Tourism Day. It’s the perfect moment to delve into the world of travel inspirations and offer globe-trotters some delightful travel-themed home decor ideas. After all, who doesn’t want their living space to inspire their wanderlust?

Whether it’s a wall adorned with a tempting image of Spain’s mouth-watering paella, a cherished snapshot from a family vacation six years ago, or a world map design that allows us to mark off each new destination, we adore these personal travel mementos.

Let’s dive deep into this blog and explore ideas that will inspire you to book those long-planned vacations.

Travel Wall Decor: The World Map

Incorporating a world map into your home decor is a beautiful way to showcase your love for travel. Look at this elegant living room with white walls and a striking black textured world map design on one accent wall . Complete the look with a sectional sofa and a hexagonal coffee table in wooden laminate to create a comforting aura in your living room. Now, here’s the fun part. Get some sleek wooden floating shelves next to the TV unit. That’s where you can showcase all your travel souvenirs and quirky knick-knacks from your global adventures.

PS: You can have a personalised world map accent wall according to your preference.

Travel-Inspired Room Decor: Keeping It Authentic

Take a look at this vibrant bedroom design. Its travel-themed decor is adventurous and incredibly chic. You can choose travel quotes, a city skyline, your favourite destination, or a world map to accessorise with photos and to-do lists. The wooden platform bed and matching side table add an earthy touch to the room. And don’t forget to hang some travel-themed home decor accessories on the wall, such as a travel bag, to create a space that inspires you to wake up with a new goal each day.

Travel Wall Decor Favourite: A Photo Gallery

We love this one! One of the most stylish and thoughtful elements in interior design is the incorporation of photographs. Why not create a collage of these cherished memories on one of the walls in your space? Our favourite is the living room, which serves as a delightful icebreaker for guests, enabling them to get to know you better. Consider using trail lights and spotlights on the false ceiling to draw attention. Don’t forget to add a stylish touch to the space with a vibrant camelback sofa, an accent chair, and a stunning rug. We also recommend choosing lighter colours for the room so that the limelight remains on your memory wall.

Travel-Themed Decor Ideas for the Bathroom

One of the most enjoyable aspects of a vacation is the ambience, especially those impeccably designed bathrooms with candles, wooden accents, well-organised vanities, and a spa-like serenity. Ah, we all deserve a break! If this applies to you, consider a bathroom makeover. Notice this simple and inviting bathroom design , featuring warm earthy tones and a white cabinet to maintain a clutter-free space. The shower cubicle features wooden flooring to create a rustic charm, while a sleek glass partition adds a modern touch. With a few strategically placed plants and the sweet scent of a cedarwood candle, you’ll feel rejuvenated, as if you’ve escaped to a distant island, far from the daily hustle.

Travel Decor Ideas for the Patio

This one is for homes with outdoor spaces. To your advantage, why go so far when you can simply step outside the door and experience the vibe? If you enjoy picnics with your family, barbeque nights with friends, and throwing house parties, you need to transform that unused patio space. This covered patio, with a wooden ceiling , features a bar where you can enjoy chilled drinks. The rattan furniture and two tall chairs beside the bar counter provide additional seating options for your guests. Add tall plants and night lights to experience those tropical beach-side night vibes!

Travel Wall Decor to Embrace Your Love for Wildlife

Express your love for wildlife in a remarkable way! While souvenirs and pictures are great, there’s a more dramatic option: wildlife murals. These striking murals infuse your living space with adventure and instantly become the centrepiece of your travel-inspired decor. Complement this theme with a sturdy, coffee table using a wood slice, bringing a taste of the outdoors indoors. Incorporating more natural materials such as stone, wood, and earthy colours will add depth and character to your space. Remember, the most exceptional homes embrace their true selves and passions, even if it means taking an unconventional path.

Wildlife-themed travel wall decor ideas for the living room to bring nature vibe

As you draw inspiration from your travels and experiences, remember that travel-inspired home decor extends far beyond wall decor. Your canvas for creativity includes patterned tiles, floral prints, teak wood furniture, and contemporary designs that can subtly or dramatically transform your living space. You can explore biophilic and bohemian designs for a peppy character. If you’re ready to bring your ideas to life, you can chat with one of our designers for a free consultation to refine your vision of your dream home. Handmade Travel Home Decor: Home Decoration for Travelers

I love travel themed items and have previously written posts on some of my favorite handmade travel themed wedding products and travel themed jewelry . I love globes, vintage maps, vacation photos, old postcards, etc. and love when I find items that incorporate travel themed elements into useful home decorations and furnishings. So we decided to put together another list on some great handmade travel themed home decor items.

These include pieces for all parts of the home from the office to the bedrooms and include everything from fridge magnets and lampshades to wall art and shower curtains. The items were also chosen to fit a wide range of decorating tastes and budgets with most items ranging in the USD $20 to $150 range.

Just so you know, many of the home decor items on this list we physically reviewed. Some were items we purchased or received as gifts, and others were given to us by artists for review. The other pieces are just ones I loved when searching for travel themed home furnishings online.

The majority of the items on our list are handmade or hand customized items, made by a single artist, family, or a small business. We love supporting these great individual artists and small businesses.

One of the things I love most about shopping for items on Etsy is that most artists can do personalized or custom items. Many of these items on this list are truly unique and many of them can be personalized for you.

We strove to include travel home decor pieces from around the world and items came from a number of places in North America, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Asia. However, the majority are from artists in the United States and United Kingdom.

If you are looking for a gift for your favorite traveler, but don’t find it here, consider checking out our guide to gifts for travelers . It contains 75 gift suggestions that should suit any budget or type of traveler!

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about any of these items included. We hope that this list helps inspire you to show your wanderlust in decorating your own home!

MOVA Solar-Powered Globes

I am in love with the solar-powered globes from MOVA . We first spotted them spinning in a window display in a shop in Venice, Italy. We assumed they were spinning because of their base so were surprised when the shopkeeper put them in our hands and they kept spinning!

The globes spin on their own using solar power and magnets so they don’t need to be plugged in and there are no batteries to be changed. They just need light, either indirect light from the sun or indoor lights. They can also be put onto about any base.

In addition to world maps, they also sell ones depicting planets, the moon, artwork, and sports teams. They come in a variety of color schemes with several base options.

Beer Cap World Map

For those of legal drinking age, this beer cap world map is a fun way to play Around the World in 80 Beers and helps encourage you to try new beers. The printed map is covered with high quality laminate and a foil layer and has a total of 80 blank circles (40 on top and 40 on bottom) that are used to stick on beer caps. It includes a magnifier to help find the smaller countries and islands, a scratcher to help remove the foil level, and 80 sticky squares to attach the beer caps to the map.

We started off our map with a beer from the oldest operating brewery in the United States (Yuengling in Pennsylvania in case you were wondering!). I also gave this as a gift to my younger brother.

I love traveling as much as I love handmade products! So whenever I travel, I make sure that I get to purchase handcrafts especially those made by local community artisans. There is just one time, I went to Chiang Mai in Thailand, I never had the chance to actually buy my souvenir, but thankfully I found a store called localbazaar who sells handmade crafts from Chiang Mai!

Hi Ruth, Yes, handmade travel products make for great souvenirs. If you don’t pick up something while traveling, you can always seem to find something online out there 😉 Best, Jessica

I’ve always wanted a hollow book. My mandatory entry I hit too soon it was 17, 15, and 7. Hope I can still be entered.

We always had fun moving the pin to our “next planned destination.” My husband loves maps, and these are terrific gifts. I recently received coasters from a friend that have outlines of areas in the city where we both used to live. I loved it… these are perfect gifts for the traveler in your life!

How I Created My Travel Gallery Wall

travel wall ideas

Hi, it’s me, your travel blogger friend who left her glamorous, frivolous life in Spain to settle back into the typical patterns of everyday American society for the past 10 months. (Thanks, COVID.) While our next adventures seem to be creeping closer, little by little, I’ve had some time to work on other projects that I’ve enjoyed. And one of them was decorating my very own office!

When our roommates moved out at the end of January, Matt and I finally got to move into our own home offices. I’ve never had an office before! I spent way too long planning out how I wanted it to look, browsing Etsy and Facebook Marketplace for things that would make it feel cozy and also remind me of my former life. And thus, I decided on a travel-themed Gallery Wall.

I thought it would be fun to share the process with everyone, in case you’re interested in trying something similar! (And if you’re looking for some inspiration for your wall, check out these travel quotes .)

Art Curation

I’ve never attempted something like this before, so I did quite a lot of research first on how to create a good gallery wall. One of the things I consistently read: You shouldn’t just go out and buy a bunch of art for the sake of the gallery. Some online sites even sell pre-made gallery art sets. But the best gallery walls have a lot of character specific to the person who designs them. Each piece tells a story.

Luckily, I already had a lot of travel-themed posters, maps, and art in other mediums that had been sitting in a box in the closet since I got home from Spain. I did search Etsy for other travel prints that felt special to me to make my gallery a little more well-rounded. Plus, it’s important to have a good variety of size, as well as vertical or horizontal orientation. That gives it more visual interest. But apart from that, the majority of my art was already mine — things I’d been collecting for years.

Here are a few of those pieces and their stories:

London/Notting Hill Poster

When I moved into my apartment in Spain, there was a single, empty poster frame hanging above my bed. As I gradually furnished my bedroom, I kept an eye out for something I could put in it — something that would help tie the room together and make it feel like home. I found this poster of Notting Hill in London (another place that’s very special to me), and it fit the poster frame almost perfectly. I knew it had to be part of my gallery wall!

German Map of Spain

travel wall ideas

I came across this old map of Spain at a market in Berlin when I visited in 2019. It’s from 1906, and it only cost €8! I had to buy it. The hardest part was trying to protect it from the rain and ensure it didn’t get all bent up in my backpack I was carrying, because it’s really fragile.

Homemade “Wanderlust” Canvas

In 2017 when my Italian sister Gaia was with us for Christmas, she made me this as a gift. We both love to travel, and that’s something that really connects us. This came to Spain with me, and I love it!

Madrid Arrow Sign

travel wall ideas

I bought a few of these signs at the Rastro market in Madrid for my family and for Matt. But I also bought myself one, because unfortunately I figured there would eventually come a day when I was away from Madrid. (Though I didn’t know it would be so soon. ☹)

A few of my art pieces are postcards from places I’ve been, and some were downloaded from Etsy. For those, it was as easy as taking the file to FedEx and having them print it for me on nicer, sturdier paper. It was cheap, too!

And three of my art pieces aren’t made of paper, but I knew I wanted them to be part of the gallery wall as well because they fit the theme. Plus, it gives the whole thing more visual interest/variety.

Most gallery walls have art in frames. As my gallery ended up with 18 pieces of art — 15 of which needed frames — that’s a lot of frames to buy!

A nice frame at Target will set you back around $13… and that’s for a relatively small one! It can really add up quickly. So I bought all of my frames (except one) at the thrift stores near me. I found most of them at Savers and Goodwill. Most of the small/medium frames were less than $3. Some of the larger ones were around $4-$8, but I didn’t need too many of those. In total, I probably spent about $50 on frames.

You can decide whether you want to have all your frames the same color or colors, or whether you want to mix it up. I decided I wanted a more eclectic mix, so I have frames of almost every color and style.

Before going to the thrift store, it helps if you have a general idea of how large you need your frames to be. I took measurements of all of my art pieces, so I knew I needed two 11×14 frames, three 5×7 frames, etc.

For some of the pieces that have more unique sizes, I measured them with the goal of finding frames that matched their proportions. The cheap 20×28″ poster frame I got from Joann was a decent fit for my 18×25″ poster of London, with a 2-3 inch border around the sides. I bought some large pieces of white cardstock/poster board to use as a background for several of my pieces. I trimmed it to the right size for the frame, taped my art to it, and then framed the whole thing — which now has a clean, even white border.

At the thrift store, a lot of the larger frames are in the “wall art” section rather than with picture frames. As these are meant to be purchased and hung as-is, it’s hard to know how big they are because they don’t list their frame size. So, I recommend bringing a tape measure with you! If I saw a somewhat-promising frame, I would whip out the tape measure and find out whether it was good fit for one of my pieces. The people at the store might have thought I was weird, but it all worked out in the end for me. 🙂

It took me about three or four trips to gather all the frames I needed, and it took varying levels of work in order to “open” the frames and replace the art. I don’t recommend doing this all in one night because it can be frustrating. Definitely be sure you have some tools on hand (needle-nose pliers were the real MVP) to help remove any metal that holds the back of the frame together.

Making a Template

It might be very tempting to skip this step. Because it’s also a lot of work, and it’s time consuming. BUT, I attribute this step to the overall success of my gallery wall’s design.

Get a roll of white paper — or you can use newspaper. Whatever kind of paper that is big enough for your largest pieces of art is fine. But, once all your art is framed, lay it over your big pieces of paper, trace it, and cut it out. Then, label it with something that will help you know what piece of art it is. “Denali Moose,” for example. After you’ve done it for all your frames, you should have a bunch of pieces of paper that are the same size as your frames.

Now, you can use painter’s tape to tape your these template pieces on the wall and play around with your layout. I started by measuring to find the midpoint of my wall. Then, I placed a piece of painter’s tape vertically to mark it. I started by taping my largest template piece on one side of it. Then, I kept building with additional template pieces around it, trying to keep it even on both sides.

Making a template on the actual wall is so much easier than using the real frames on the floor and trying to translate that to the wall. You don’t have to worry about making a mistake when it comes to hanging, either, because the templates are also useful in that regard!

travel wall ideas

Hanging the Art

While you could do this with nails, many of the frames I used didn’t have sawtooth hangers or any hangers whatsoever. Plus, I didn’t want to put nearly 20 holes in the wall. Especially because I still wasn’t sure how/if this was going to turn out. Instead, I bought a ton of large Command Strips from Target (probably about $40 total, but I didn’t use all of them on this project).

Bonus: the pack of command strips I bought came with a mini level , which was way easier than trying to use the heavy 3-foot level we have in our basement. I also used this level to help me when I was putting up my template pieces to make sure they were relatively straight.

So, now it’s time to hang your art! Instead of taking the template pieces down, leave them up and replace only one piece at a time with your real art. Again, I started with my biggest piece. When I took down that template piece, it was obvious to me where my poster needed to go. I put the command strips on the back of the frame and removed the sticky backing. And put the poster up where the template piece had been, using my mini level.

And I just did this one by one until all the frames were up and all the paper templates were on the ground. (Even though I was still missing a few pieces of art, I went ahead and put all the frames up.)

I would step back every once in a while to see how it was looking. I think I only needed to make one adjustment based on one of the pieces looking a little crooked, but the level helped and the template obviously did, too! Everything went up without a hitch.

In the end, I’m really happy with how it turned out! While stumbling into my office each morning with my coffee and sitting down for work isn’t as exciting as my two years in Spain… it sure beats when I was in lockdown in my apartment bedroom during the first few months of the pandemic last spring. Turns out, sitting on your bed with a small lap desk from IKEA isn’t the most comfortable workspace… but I try to leave that in the past 😉

Have you ever tried something like a gallery wall? Or, how do you bring travel into your living spaces? Let me know in the comments!

Travel-Themed Decorating Ideas

framed map and potted plants

Traveling has a host of physical, spiritual, and emotional benefits. Learning how to decorate your home with a travel theme means you can display all your souvenirs in a way that keeps those special moments and memories close. However, you don't just have to decorate with mementos from your trips. There are many ways to incorporate a love of travel into your living space. Doing so might give you some travel benefits without ever having to leave your house.

Travelex explains that traveling relieves stress and helps to boost our mental health. However, it's not just the traveling that's good for you. Even planning for a trip and looking at dreamy places on Airbnb has a positive impact on your health. Having something to look forward to can help you through the worst days. Depending on how and where you travel, you can learn more about different cultures and open your mind to new experiences and ways of life.

It may also improve your fitness, depending on your travel style. If you visit Europe or even Disney World, you can expect to log thousands of steps on your fitness tracker. You can reap even more benefits if you're an active traveler who likes hiking, paddleboarding, or swimming. Travel can also improve your sleep because of extra activity and reduced stress. You can reap all these benefits at home if you decorate with a travel theme.

Turn travel photos into coasters

This clever idea allows you to revisit your favorite travel memories whenever you sit down with a drink. They can evoke memories of the people who traveled with you and inspire you to share stories with visitors who notice and appreciate the snapshots. According to  Travel Inspired Living , these are easy to create with basic supplies you can get almost anywhere.

You'll need four to six plain colored ceramic coasters, depending on how many photos — and drinkers — you have. These can be any color you desire, but neutral shades like white, black, cream, or beige are the easiest to find. You'll also need Mod Podge, a foam brush, spray adhesive, travel photos, and felt cushions. New-age polaroids work great for this project because they are square.

First, cut your photos to fit the coaster. You can attach them with either spray adhesive or Mod Podge. Choose a matte or glossy finish, whichever best suits your preferences. Position your photo, and coat it with a thin layer of Mod Podge. You can do this with a foam brush or a foam roller. This step will initially obscure the photo, but it will dry clear. Allow the Mod Podge to dry completely before applying two more coats, leaving them for several hours in between. Once your final layer is dry, turn the coasters over and apply felt pads to the corners to prevent them from scratching your tables and other surfaces.

Construct a vacation memory photo map

Get travel pictures off your phone and onto your wall with this fun travel-inspired DIY project. Per DIY Fun Ideas , you can link your photographs to the places you took them using a world map decal. Frame your photos any way you choose and use yarn to connect the frame to the correct location on your map.

There are lots of ways you can customize this project to suit your preferences. Instead of yarn, you can use tape or ribbon. Ribbon comes in various colors and styles to go with any decor. Different colors, sizes, and types of frames can also make this travel-themed decor pop. Consider choosing a few larger frames to fit three or four pictures together. Pair these with your smaller and medium frames to offset one another. The wall decal is black and pairs nicely with black frames, but if you're looking for more variety, you can also use gray. For eclectic wall art , select various colors to distribute around your map.

Build a dresser with global appeal

While this DIY project is time-consuming, the results are worth it. One of the best things about this project is that the piece of furniture you are decorating doesn't need to be expensive. You can choose the size, shape, and price you desire by visiting thrift shops, antique stores, or flea markets. Alternatively, you can repurpose a bureau or cabinet you already have.

Re-invent your cabinet or dresser and give it a fresh face by attaching maps with Mod Podge or similar decoupage paste.  Between the Rafters  recommends practicing with a smaller project if you've never worked with Mod Podge before and staying patient. The decoupage process and cutting your maps to fit the size of your drawers will take time and effort. The finished result, however, will be stunning.

Like so many travel-themed decor projects, this one is totally customizable. An old-school map in yellows, creams, and whites will work best if you use a black or dark brown bureau. If you start with a white or cream piece, maps with large amounts of water create a perfect complement. If you don't have a bureau or cabinet in colors that go with your existing maps or vice-versa, you can fix this by starting your project with a can of paint.

Frame your foreign currencies

If you're a world traveler, you probably have a collection of coins and foreign currency around the house. While you could save them up for your next trip — maybe you're already planning one — you can also use them as decoration in your home. According to the School of Decorating , floating frames are ideal for displaying your paper currency from international destinations. You can use store-bought frames as-is or adjust them to best complement the currency.

Many countries use coins for smaller denominations of currency, making them more challenging to display. Most travelers store and display their coins in jars or small boxes. However, you can also use frames to display coins from faraway places (via Indigo Amethyst ). You can glue the money to the back, or if you want the possibility of using it in the future, use a soft mounting foam instead. It comes in various colors, or you can cover it in fabric to create the look you want. Black or blue velvet will nicely offset your coins, no matter the material.

Build an international gallery wall

A gallery wall is a beautiful way to display your photos and other collected souvenirs from your travels. You can even create a clipboard with hinge clips to hang your smaller pictures or prints. This idea is a unique way to display odd-sized items from your travels. Hang ticket stubs, painted images, or photos from your Instagram account. According to Live Laugh Rowe , you will need plywood, polyurethane, brushes or rags to apply the polyurethane, metal hinge clips, screws, a screwdriver, 4 x 4 prints, and a sawtooth hanger to create your clipboard. Cut the board to fit the number of pictures — or other items — you will be mounting.

Start by applying polyurethane to the wood, then decide which direction to hang your clipboard and where to mount your clips. Drill holes and mount the clips with flathead screws. Attach the sawtooth hanger to the back, clip your photos or mementos to the clipboard, and hang it on the wall. When deciding on other items for your gallery wall, aim for frames of the same or similar colors, but choose items of different shapes and sizes for eye-catching visual appeal. Consider using mixed mediums as well — watercolor paintings, canvases, and photographs.

Create a travel-themed shadowbox

If you've collected a bunch of small tokens from your trips but haven't managed to do much with them, this may be the project for you. It allows you to assemble a small collection of photos and mementos from a trip and put them on display. It's a wonderful option if you're the kind of person who brings more than just photographs home from your travels. Shadow boxes allow you to display multiple items from a location in one place, which means you're not limited to two-dimensional displays.

Per  A Sacred Journey , you can use a photo, print, or postcard as your background. Or use more than one, layered on top of each other. Build your shadowbox around the background display, or pick up a pre-made one from stores like IKEA or craft shops like Michael's, Jo-Ann's, or Hobby Lobby. Start by using an adhesive to attach your mementos to your background, including shells, tickets, pins, bills, and other small tokens. Add any accents you choose, like paints, pens, markers, glitter, embroidery floss, or whatever else you can imagine. Layering gives your display depth and lets you show off everything you collected from your favorite destinations in one place.

Turn your suitcases into shelves

Don't start disassembling the suitcases you use for your travels; this design hack from Ki Nassauer Style  works best with vintage luggage and trunks . Search thrift shops or online stores for well-crafted, unique pieces that speak to your personal style. Flea markets and antique shops are also good places to source your suitcases for this DIY project.

Once you've found your luggage, the first thing you'll need to do is remove the lining (via Instructables ). Then, trim it to the appropriate size. This job is not for novices, so find someone with experience using a scroll or circular saw and a jigsaw. These are necessary for cutting through the metal band in most vintage suitcases.

Decide what depth you want your shelves to be, then apply a layer of painter's tape to mark where you will cut the suitcases. You will also need to cut pieces of wood to the same size and shape as your suitcase. You use these for mounting. Plan out where you want each shelf to go. Once you've picked your locations, attach the wood pieces to the wall using 2 ½-inch screws. Then fit the luggage over the wood, and decide what to display on your new shelves.

Light up the night with LED map candles

This idea from The Navage Patch is a genius way to give your standard LED candles a fun travel theme. All you need are some maps, Mod Podge, and LED candles. You have two options for applying the decoupage glue. You can attach it directly to the candle or put it on the back side of the map. The map is a slightly easier option in this case because it is a flat surface, and the candle is round.

Try your best to cut the map to the same size as the candle before starting, but it doesn't have to be perfect. It should be slightly larger than the LED candle's surface. A paper cutter will make this task easier, but it's necessary. Glue the map onto your LED candle and smooth the surface, removing air bubbles. Fold the edges over the bottom of the candle, gluing it to the bottom. When using the decoupage paste, keeping your fingers clean is essential. If you get glue on them, wipe it off quickly on a clean cloth. Otherwise, your fingers can stick to the paper, making this project more challenging to complete. Using scissors, trim the map as close to the top of the LED candle as possible. Let the glue dry completely before switching on your candles and lighting up your new display.

Turn a globe into a lamp or shade

There are several ways to create these lovely travel-themed lamps, depending on what kind of globe you choose to use.  Upcycled Wonders  recommends cutting a traditional globe in half if you want to decorate a child's room, using the Northern hemisphere for one lampshade and the Southern hemisphere for the other. Since globes come in many colors, you can choose one that complements your existing decor. You can even add decorative accents to the bottom if you prefer.

If you're looking for something more subtle, you can turn a whole globe into a nightlight or chandelier. Drill a hole into the globe's top and place a bulb inside, or cut it in half and reassemble it around the bulb. Either is an excellent option for a child's room, where it can serve as a nightlight and an educational tool all in one. You can also use non-transparent globes as lights, but it will take a bit more work. You will need to drill holes to let the light escape from inside, but this provides tremendous opportunities for your travel-themed decor. You can drill holes along the borders of the countries. If you're a world traveler, you can drill holes in each location you've visited, so your lamp doubles as a reminder of all your favorite trips.

Decoupage garden decorations with maps

You don't have to limit travel decor to the inside of your house. You can also decorate your garden, porch, or patio with travel-themed objects and designs. One of the best ways to do this is by adding maps to planters or a charming birdhouse . You can use roadmaps or world maps depending on the size and design of the objects.

According to Midwest Living , matching the colors on your maps to your birdhouse is critical for this project. You can buy unfinished birdhouses from craft stores and paint them in the colors that correspond to your maps. If birdhouses aren't your thing, you can decoupage maps on planter cans or even the rims of terracotta planters (via 365 Designs ). To plant in them, you must use a water-resistant decoupage medium. However, this isn't necessary if you use them for storage or decoration.

Start by applying a water-based stain to your pots. Measure the rim and cut your maps to a slightly larger size. Look for maps made from decoupage paper, which is thicker and more resistant to bleeding than traditional paper. Put painter's tape under the rim to prevent decoupage paste from getting on the pot's surface. Apply a base layer of decoupage on the rim to help seal the clay. Attach your map to the edge using the same decoupage medium. Smooth out the air bubbles and coat the map with another layer of decoupage. Three coats should be sufficient to seal the decorative rim on your pot.

Make a memory jar

If you collect things like theater ticket stubs and train tickets from your travels, creatively store and display them with mason jars. Mason jars come in various colors, styles, and sizes, with a variety of lids. A rusty-hued jar is an excellent choice for rustic or vintage decor , according to  She's Crafty . If you favor modern or minimalist styles, nickel or black are ideal choices.

Memory jars are an excellent way to display your collection of tickets and travel stubs in a visually pleasing manner while also reminding you of the memories associated with those experiences. There are so many things you can include. Consider cards from your hotel room (if they aren't the kind that needs to be turned back in), Disney passes, ticket stubs from a ferry ride, or the funicular you rode in Capri on your last trip to Italy. If you find yourself traveling extensively in Europe and using public transit, you may have a whole collection of ticket stubs for your jar. You can keep all of them in one place alongside your other travel memories or collect location-specific memories in a jar with pictures from the corresponding vacation.

How to Create the Perfect Travel Photo Gallery Wall

travel wall ideas

Sharing is caring!

A Travel Photo Gallery Wall is the perfect way to help your vacations keep on giving you inspiration and fond memories. Let your love of that dream destination continue to grow with a travel picture wall, well after the plane has touched down.

One of the best parts about traveling is being able to re-live the sights seen and memories created.  A fun way our family does this is by having a travel gallery on our wall with a map .

Where to put a Travel Photo Gallery Wall?

When we started traveling a lot as a family, we wanted something to strengthen our good memories of trips together and inspire future travel. We looked at lots of travel wall ideas.

We considered collecting travel wall decor from different destinations. Ultimately, but we decided our own memories from the lens of our own cameras and our viewpoint would be the best way to make our travels last forever.

We chose to create our wall of travel photos on a spacious and open wall in our master bedroom right next to our bed. Travel is a priority in our family, so it’s our private travel wall gallery. We aren’t showing off to our friends and family all our travel experiences, but rather keeping them close to our hearts and minds in our private room.

My husband and I cuddle up together and reminisce about our trips on the walls. We love seeing how little our kids were on past trips. Then when we get home from a trip, we enjoy going through our travel pictures and picking the best one to represent our feelings of the destination and our trip there.

We all use the travel photo gallery wall and push pin map to create future trip ideas and plans together.

Adding photos of our most recent adventures sometimes means we have to take out an old photo, but we keep a file of all our travel photos used in the past. Changing the travel photos on the wall make it look ‘new and different’ which sometimes is hard to do in a home.

Don’t let the memories fade when the trip ends! Get your travel pictures on the wall!

Benefits of a Travel Photo Gallery Wall

I love having a travel wall of photos.  Here are all the reasons this is worth your time, resources and a full wall in your home (or more!)

  •  Remember stunning scenes, majestic vistas, and beautiful cities. Photos never do it justice, but it will bring back my memory of the place
  • Create stronger bonds of love for your family
  • Feel nostalgic for good memories from journies around the world
  • To encourage and motivate future trips and adventures to add to the collection (and get another pin in our travel map!)
  • Have travel on your mind as you can see so much of the world left to explore.
  • Motivation to save for your next trip
  • Find destinations that are interesting and new right from the pushpin map. Easily see the spots you haven’t been to and be curious about what there might be to do or see there.

Travel Wall of Photos | Before and After

Our previous wall was a collection of random frames and different sizes of travel photos. We added the travel photos on our wall as we took new trips – with whatever frame we could find.  We added new frames and photos as we went so it was a bit chaotic.

Not to mention the ugly yellow and red wall! we were due for an update!

photos and map of travel Wall

When we recently repainted our master bedroom, we wanted to be more intentional in creating our travel gallery.  In the past, we would find a random new frame for a new trip photo and cram it into space on the wall.

My goals for the new gallery wall with a map included:

  • Display many of our favorite travel photos
  • Professional Push pin map to help us track our trips and plan future trips
  • Look Clean and Organized

How to Create a Travel Picture Wall

1. push pin map.

A travel Gallery photo wall needs to include a push pin map! I love the maps ready complete with the foam backing to easily stick pins in our vacation spots. A travel map helps you envision the world and be curious about a variety of places to see.

Push Pin maps are high quality and look gorgeous. There are so many options to choose from, you are sure to find exactly what works for your style and travel type.

Here are some travel wall ideas to consider as your pick your map.

  • USA or World map?
  • Artistic Map or Accurate Map?
  • Busy Map or Simple Design?
  • Colorful or muted tones?

Push pin travel map of USA

After looking for many, many options, we decided that even though the artistic maps were more aesthetically pleasing, a map with accurate cities and roads would meet our needs better.

However, with our new room colors and simple design, we wanted a map that had muted tones and was easy to look at from a distance.  We found a simple earth-toned map with major cities and roads listed. It is perfect!

These  Push Pin Travel Maps have 8 frame options and over 20 different maps to choose from.  They come with a foam board already installed so it is ready to start adding your pins. And you will even receive map pins in your order, so you can start pinning your travels immediately.

We received our Push Pin map within a week of ordering it.  It is durable in quality and was shipped to protect the frame. The map arrived exactly as shown on the website.

You’ll find many different options for world maps and US maps and even keepsake boxes and other travel decor and treasures from Push pin Maps.

DIY Travel wall gallery

Now comes the fun part of finding your very favorite photos from your trips.

  • How many photos?
  • Landscape only or with people in the photos?
  • Label photos with date or location?
  • Artistic prints or random assortment

travel wall ideas

Keep in mind that most of your best travel photographs will be landscape not vertical. You’ll need more wide frames than long frames.  There will be the occasional tall photos (like the Eiffel Tower, Tower of Pisa or Gateway Arch ). so don’t limit to only landscape. We opted for a design that gave us minimal vertical photo spaces and plentiful landscape options.

Do you want only artistic photos or some with your family in them?  We opted for some of both.  We love seeing how little our kids were on certain trips and talking about their changing looks and personality through the years. But we also enjoy using our photography skills to capture the perfect perspective at our destination.

Do you want to label your photos with locations or years?  We put a small tag on each photo with the location and year.  Even though we thought we would remember every trip forever, after 6 years of traveling, we realized we were wrong.  When we would look at our wall we were forgetting when and where we experienced things.

If you print all your photos at the same time, it is much cheaper to get 8x10s here  for only $.70 each.  There is a $9 shipping fee, so this is only cost effective if you are buying a large number of photos. We received 60 8 x 10s in a couple of days for half the cost of printing locally.

Do you want larger, decorative frames with mats or simple frames ?

On our previous travel wall, the variety of frames and mats were distracting and chaotic. We just wanted to see our photos without the distraction of the frames. We purchased inexpensive, uniform frames . We ordered all the same frames in bulk and saved money.

If your budget allows, you may consider making canvas prints of your favorite photos.

4.Other Decor

Many travel galleries have beautiful pieces of decor mixed in.  Arrows, Quotes, Wooden plaques, or globes or travel souvenirs on a shelf might be a perfect addition to your travel display.  Look around for a favorite travel decoration to add to your travel photo gallery wall.

Our wall was just a little full, so we put travel decor in other locations in our home.

Total Cost of our Travel Photo Gallery Wall

  • 60 8×10 prints= $35
  • 36  5×7 prints =$28
  • Push Pin Travel Map  = $120 ( includes the frame and pins)
  • 60 8×10 frames and 36 5×7 frames = $88

Total for a new travel wall = $271

Great information, I have never thought of doing this. I really like the idea. I just need to figure out where I could put this in my house somehow. I have always wanted away to put our fun adventures on a wall.

Its a great way to bring your trip home with you! You could even do a small corner of just a few photos you rotate through…

' src=

I love this idea. I’ve always wanted to create a travel wall and this has given me the inspiration to do it! I love how you added the map as the center point and built the rest around it. Its a very organized way to display many photos in one area and tell a story with it.

Thank you! I really like how it turned out! Show me yours when you finish it!

' src=

This is an awesome idea! I have one but it is in the process of being made. =) Planning more vacation trips with my little ones.

share with me what you come up with! Hope your travels go smoothly with the littles!

' src=

Awesome idea! This will be the same thing that me and my wife are planning to do by the time we move to our new home. Thanks for sharing it!

' src=

Thank you so much for this post! I have actually been working on our travel gallery and have had a hard time deciding which direction to take. I think my original thought would have been to chaotic. You inspired me to go with a more simple approach. I’m excited to work on it now!

oh good! I know my first few ideas would’ve been really chaotic because of the number of trips we take! Most wall only have a few photos with more decor, but I wanted to streamline mine!

' src=

I absolutely LOVE this idea! Now I just have to find a wall 🙂

Yep that can be challenging! Is there a wall you really dislike that you can redo?

' src=

I think this is awesome and something I will definitely do. I just had my first child in September of 2017 and we’ve already traveled to North Carolina from Alaska together. About to fly again to Oregon and then England for the summer. This is also a great way for me to FINALLY decorate my bedroom!

Wow! You are going places! Yep, we love it in our bedroom too!

' src=

Love this idea! I was actually just looking for ideas on how to do the same sort of things. I love how clean and organized yours looks. I have a large world map that I want to do it with.

Finding the map was the hardest part for me! So if you already have yours you are ready to go!

' src=

I love this and want to do it! Plus the low cost makes me super happy!

Right? I thought it would cost a lot more to re do the entire thing to my liking!

' src=

I love this! My fiancé and I were recently talking about printing our trip photos and starting a photo gallery.

Perfect time to start just as you are starting out your marriage! Leave lots of blanks for the future!!

' src=

Love this idea! The muted map tones really help the pictures stand out. Definitely going to do something similar! (I wonder how we could include both a world map and a U.S. map… hmm….)

Oh, good idea. I was think I would just convert over to a world map, but it would be better to have both! Our kids just got passports and we are starting to travel the world more. Let me know what you come up with!

27+ TASTEFUL Travel Decor Ideas for Bedroom 2023

Best travel decor for bedroom, bedroom decor ideas

Where better to bring your love of travel than into your bedroom? And no, it doesn’t have to be tacky! Here are more than 27 tasteful  and romantic travel decor ideas for your bedroom. Perfect for minimalists, too.

Trends for bedroom decor have been shifting from all-neutral tones to bold statement pieces that reflect your personality. Warmer nature tones are big, like greens and blues. Add depth by layering tones, and interest with contrasting colors. Let go and follow your gut with patterns and pieces that make you happy!

Below you’ll find a HUGE variety of bedroom travel decor. Furniture, like pretty headboards, quirky shelves and fair-trade nightstands. Cozy bedding, pillows and throws. Bedroom lighting ideas. And incredible artwork to complement your style.

1. HEADBOARDS Bedroom Decor Furniture

Leather headboard, bedroom decor wall ideas furniture, travel decor

If you read design recommendations for bedroom decor, they’ll all say to make your bed the focal point of the room. Your bed dominates your room, and anchors your style, too. So, don’t be afraid to be bold! Let it make the statement you’re after.

You can find rustic, chic and elegant headboards on Amazon. For travel-themed bedroom decor ideas, my favorite is this upholstered headboard . Doesn’t it remind you of a suitcase?! Get it in vintage brown faux leather or grey fabric. Mount it on the wall with the black metal rail, and adjust it to the perfect height. Available for all bed sizes.

Slumberland has a large variety of headboards , including lovely upholstered and rustic wood slats to match your look. While it’s hard to find headboards that are truly travel-inspiring, you can find ones that work with other travel decor in your bedroom. Like European elegance, rustic outdoors and whimsical beach.

2. STORAGE Ideas for Bedroom Travel Decor

Suitcase storage, bedroom decor vintage, travel decor for bedroom

If you’re looking for travel-inspiring storage solutions for your bedroom decor, consider suitcases! These vintage suitcases from Lavinia’s Tea Party shop on Etsy are SO cute. Picking my favorite two to feature in the images was so incredibly hard! Some come in a set of three and others on their own. Love maps? Vintage florals, pastels or geometrics? Take a look! They’re perfect for storing photos, keepsakes and out-of-season accessories.

You can also find these handsome vintage-style suitcase trunks on Amazon. They come in a set of three, and are made of polywood faux leather. Perfect for stacking and storing.

Want something bigger? Here you go! A set of three travel-themed trunks , with vintage Victorian map print and made of wood with faux leather accents. Great option for a very reasonable price.

3. Travel-Inspiring PAINTINGS for Bedroom Decor Wall Ideas

Travel themed paintings, bedroom decor wall ideas, travel decor

Now, artwork is DEFINITELY in the eye of the beholder. So, I’m going to show you two very different approaches to something I think most of us love … the beach. And these two artists are amazing!!

First, The Colorful Cat Studio creates gorgeous watercolor artwork , with both originals and fine art giclée prints. For prints, you can choose among four types of paper to achieve the look you’re after. Featured here is the romantic Hawaii watercolor painting entitled “Green Waves.” (Psst … as of writing, the original is still available!)

And second, Aimee Weaver paints her beautiful beach scene onto reclaimed wood. Choose between these vivid or more muted colors. Both are gorgeous and perfect for travel-inspired bedroom decor ideas for your wall.

4. BENCH Bedroom Travel Decor Furniture

Bedroom decor furniture bench, travel decor for bedroom

Aren’t these benches pretty?! I’ve always wanted a beautiful bench at the foot of my bed, but never seem to have a bedroom big enough. One day!

This Lillian bench just oozes sophistication. It immediately reminds me of a European cafe, with expensive cappuccino, vine-covered walls and French accents! And this Stephanie ottoman is similar, but with more of a palace garden feel. And storage!

5. Travel Themed BEDDING Bedroom Decor

Travel themed bedding, travel decor for bedroom

How about bedding that takes you to European palace gardens, or Asian tigers on the prowl? Antropologie has a selection of romantic, travel-inspiring duvet covers for bold and minimalist bedroom decor.

And if you LOVE maps (like me!), take a look at this printed map duvet cover from Mapology on Etsy. I assumed it’d be a bit scratchy, but reviewers say it’s nice and soft. Choose a vintage color theme, or opt for bolder, more colorful options.

6. Travel-Themed BOOKS for Bedroom Decor

Travel themed photography, bedroom decor art pictures

Travel-themed books can be more than entertainment or textbooks for planning that epic trip. Beautiful travel photography compilations are pieces of art, and can be wonderful travel-themed bedroom decor ideas.

One idea is National Geographic’s “ Destinations of a Lifetime ,” available on Amazon. You can’t go wrong with possibly the MOST recognized source of epic travel photography in the world. This compilation takes you to 225 incredible destinations, both natural and manmade. Travel to ancient rainforests, cobblestone streets and massive monoliths. Scenic islands, stunning cityscapes and fascinating architecture. Each location includes details for planning your trip, too.

And I wholeheartedly recommend Dave Brosha photography. His latest compilation, “ Southern Light: Photography of Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands ,” will whisk you away to “the land at the end of the world.” The land of penguins, icebergs and incredible cold. Where the dramatic play of light and dark on massive mountain peaks will leave you breathless. And sleeping seal pups will melt your heart.

Plus, Dave’s photography will look fantastic with the rest of your travel-inspired bedroom decor. (FYI I’m SO proud to say I grew up with Dave! Actually, his little brother was my elementary sweetheart *wink*)

7. BOOKENDS Bedroom Travel Decor Ideas

Metal city bookends, bedroom decor ornaments, bedroom travel decor

Bookends are a practical way to build on your bedroom travel decor. Check out these fun metal bookends from Glozis Decor on Etsy. For travel-themed bedroom decor ideas, you might go with a city skyline, lighthouse or New York City taxi. Or, choose a bookend that takes you into your favorite travel-inspiring book, like Sherlock Holmes or a Japanese Samurai fighter. A smokey jazz club or cobblestone street lined with lampposts.

Another great option for warmer, softer bedroom decor is this wooden mountain bookend set from The Blooming Willow on Etsy. It’s handmade from solid wood and painted, and finished with a protective coat. You can have it painted in pink, blue, green, grey or black. My favorites, though, are the natural and dark wood stains.

Would you rather have a paper weight? They’re a bit more versatile than bookends, and you can find some super cute ideas on Etsy. Among my favorites is this bronze globe from Rebels Craft Creations on Etsy, made from concrete. Cool, hey?!

For romantic travel-inspiring bed pillows, take a look through The Citizenry’s lumbar pillow collection . You’ll find both subtle and bold patterns and colors, handwoven around the world. Like the one featured here, handwoven in Guatemala.

You can also find some BEAUTIFUL  travel-themed lumbar pillows on Etsy. Browse light florals and tropical prints and bold boho and Turkish prints, like this gorgeous print from Turkish Rug N Roll.

If you’d love wall lighting ideas for all that travel reading and dreaming, check  out the beautiful outdoors-inspired wall lights from Woods Lamp. This shop has SO many great wall lighting ideas, including for minimalist bedroom decor. Do you prefer smooth, polished wood, or the unfinished look of bark? A walk-in-the-woods or nautical vibe? How about an upcycled wine bottle or beer mug? SO fun!

10. DRAPERIES Bedroom Travel Decor

Floral draperies, bedroom decor wall ideas, travel decor

Here are luxurious and romantic draperies for bedroom decor, ready to whisk you away. Custom made by Anna’s Home Decor Store on Etsy, including header, lining, soft ruffles and French pleats. Choose among rich designer fabric reminiscent of European gardens, or light airy linen. Beautiful.

And Theodora Studios on Etsy has a wonderful selection of travel-inspiring fabrics for bedroom draperies . I love the Asian Chinoiserie and coral reefs patterns. Select your length, color and pleats. Price includes a variety of lining options.

11. Luxurious Throw BLANKETS Travel Decor for Bedroom

Bring practical and decorative warmth to your bed, chaise or chair with a luxurious throw blanket. Find lovely Turkish throws for minimalist bedroom decor at Infuse Zen shop on Etsy. Choose from soft, elegant patterns and colors. Like dandelion and pineapple prints that carry you away to the meadow or the beach!

I also love these soft printed throws from Archana Arts and Crafts. My favorite is the Persian print. SO pretty and romantic!

12. Travel-Themed ELECTRICAL COVERS Bedroom Decor Ideas

How boring are your light switch and outlet covers? Wanna dress them up??

I love the image variety and TEXTURE of embossi electrical covers from the Craftsprite shop on Etsy. These light switch and outlet covers are made from printed metal, with embossing and varnish for a fun 3D effect. Choose from beautiful floral and natural woodsy patterns. Retro and ethnic prints. Sunny beaches and cityscapes. All with matching screws!

13. WALL SHELVES Travel Decor for Bedroom

Suitcase shelves, bedroom travel decor, bedroom decor wall ideas

How about these cute suitcase shelves for travel inspiration? Not sure you can get much more travel-themed bedroom decor than this! Double Decker Vintage features a variety of suitcases to choose from, including sizes, colors and styles. Like the top buckle or the bottom hinges. Modern or vintage. Bold or neutral. Have fun mixing and matching!

For the minimalist travel-inspired bedroom decor, take a look at this beautiful driftwood shelf . It’s one of a kind, but you can find more at Strollin the Beach on Etsy. This shop reclaims driftwood and sands down their treasures into gorgeous live-edge shelves. Super romantic and perfect for the beach lover and adventurer at heart. (Psst … while visiting this shop, also check out their jewelry holders. Another awesome idea for bedroom travel decor.)

14. Bedside TABLE Travel Decor Furniture Ideas

While we’re looking at upcycling suitcases, why not use them as your side table?!

Interested in modern and chic bedroom decor? Check out Maverick Finds on Etsy for suitcases upcycled into awesome suitcase tables . I love this white one!

Or, custom order exactly what you want. I LOVE these vintage suitcase tables from Rustique Re In Vintage on Etsy. But if you’d rather have something shabby chic, army-style, or one that reminds you of a French garden, they’ll do that, too!

15. Bedroom Decor PLANTS

Lavender plants, travel decor for bedroom, bedroom decor plants

2021 bedroom decor trends are about bringing nature in. So, what better way to do this than with actual plants?

And if you’re going to have a plant (or three?) in your bedroom, lavender is the ideal choice. They’re pretty, edible AND recognized as a sleep-aid. Apparently lavender lowers your heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels.

While plants aren’t necessarily travel-inspiring, they are for non green thumbs like me who have to visit a botanical garden to enjoy living plants! If this is you, too, check out the super-easy lavender pods from Click and Grow. Click and Grow’s Smart Soil creates the ideal environment for plants to grow, and is free of harmful stuff. Comes in a pack of 3 or 9. Add a Smart Garden for those pods, and you’re good to go!

16. Travel-Themed WALL ART Bedroom Decor Ideas

Travel themed wall art, bedroom decor wall ideas, travel decor

Even with minimalist bedroom decor, you can indulge in some tasteful travel-inspiring wall art. I love this script wall art from the All Wrapped Up in Yarn shop on Etsy. It’s lightweight and handmade, featuring map vinyl on top. Choose from classics that inspire you, like “adventure,” “explore” and “discover.” “Dream” is also rather perfect for your travel themed bedroom decor.

17. CHAISE LOUNGE Bedroom Decor Furniture

Bedroom decor furniture chaise lounge luxury, travel decor for bedroom

Doesn’t this Baroque chaise lounge just leave you dreaming of a French getaway?! It’s vintage from the 1940s, with floral baroque motif, tassel carving and tufted in white leather with gold. And while this dreamy chaise lounge is one of a kind and likely sold by the time you read this, Sittin Pretty by Myleen’s shop on Etsy has other refinished European Antiques ready for your travel-inspired bedroom decor!

Or this gorgeous contemporary chaise lounge from Baxton Studio on Amazon. I love the smooth curves and dark charcoal linen upholstery. Has a solid birch frame, non-marking legs and very firm polyurethane foam cushioning. Just add a travel-inspired cushion and it’ll send you on those travel dreams! Also available in beige.

There are SO many travel-themed cushions you could go with for your bedroom decor. Do you want something bold, or subtle? Fun, elegant or whimsical? I had SUCH a hard time choosing that I’m including four!

For bold and fun, check out these airport code cushions from YHM Designs on Etsy. Choose from SO many USA, Canada and worldwide destinations. If you love Paris elegance, take a look at this great selection of classic Eiffel Tower cushion covers on Amazon. Features a hidden zipper closure.

19. TABLE LAMPS for Bedroom Travel Decor Ideas

Nautical table lamp, bedroom decor lamps, travel decor for bedroom

You need a lamp for your bedside table. So, you might as well make it part of your bedroom travel decor! But it’s almost overwhelming how many ideas are out there. Here are four of my favorite … and all very different.

First up is a nautical table lamp that lulls you off to the beach. It’s perfect for minimalist bedroom decor, with muted colors and only the winding rope to take you away. But if you’d rather have a place to keep all the sand and shells you brought back, this fillable glass lamp might be perfect.

Eiffel Tower table lamp, bedroom decor lamps, travel decor for bedroom

For travel decor that whisks you off to Paris, you have to love this Eiffel Tower lamp ! It’s 14” with a neutral shade, so all eyes are on the tower. And if you’d rather be whisked off to Turkey, take a look at this beautiful Turkish mosaic lamp . Its elegant swan neck and multi-color pattern are SO pretty.

20. Travel-Inspiring LAMP SHADES for Bedroom Decor

Floral lamp shade, bedroom decor lamps, travel decor for bedroom

Have a lamp you love but want to change up the shade? It’s an easy idea to bring your love of travel to your bedroom decor!

I highly recommend searching Etsy for gorgeous and unique lamp shades perfect for you. One of my favorites are the beautiful flower garden shades from Fab Funky Pillows. They’re stunning at first sight, and perfect if you love the flower gardens of European palaces. But if you look closer, you’ll see fantastical creatures, too! (Psst … when visiting this shop, also check out their gorgeous cushions!)

More fabulous options are the designer shades from Blue Crocus Textiles. Choose from a great variety of scenes, sizes and metallic interior. Lampshades are lined with a tested and approved heat-safe PVC backing material. I love the watercolor look of this hillside and similar wilderness scenes. But you can also choose from more defined art pieces, too.

And their “pine cone” chandelier is perfect for the outdoors travel lover! Isn’t it beautiful?! Handcrafted with 174 smoothened pieces of wood. Choose from many special oil colors, plus cord color and length.

Or how about pretty string lights? Check out Marwin Craft shop on Etsy for SO many beautiful string light ideas for the bedroom. They’re elegant and tasteful, with plenty of flower garden lights. My favorite for bedroom travel decor is the cherry blossom Japanese lanterns. Aren’t they lovely?! Choose between battery and plug-in options, and various lengths.

22. NIGHT LIGHTS for Minimalist Bedroom Travel Decor

Travel themed night lights, bedroom decor wall ideas, travel decor

For super minimalist travel-inspired bedroom decor ideas, take a look at these pretty night lights. Here’s a mountain scene night light from Teardrop Glass Shop on Etsy, made from glass and wood. It’s LED with a dusk and dawn sensor, so it automatically turns on as it gets dark. Perfect for those who love the outdoors!

And this tropical fish night light from J Devlin Glass Art is SO perfect for beach lovers! You have to browse this shop for more beautiful night light ideas. Like gorgeous garden flowers, autumn trees and stained glass. (Psst … also check out the small trays, which would be perfect for a jewelry tray.)

23. Travel POSTER Bedroom Decor Wall Ideas

Travel themed wall art, bedroom decor wall ideas, travel decor

For tasteful bedroom travel decor posters, take a look through The Citizenry’s travel prints collection . You’ll find lovely landscapes and dreamy close-ups that’ll take you away to favorite travel destinations. Like desert sands. Irish cliffs. Famous Spanish architecture and more.

I also love the colors of the Amalfi Coast print from Emerald and Ivy Studios on Etsy. SO dreamy, of a place still on my bucket list!

There hasn't been much travel this year but that does mean that many of us have been looking to make our living space that little bit brighter.

Whether you're still in lockdown, looking for the perfect gift or just enjoying some downtime over the holidays, you can keep the sweet memories of past adventures alive. Here are a few suggestions for personalizing your living spaces with vacation photos trapped on your digital devices.

1. Put a frame around it

A digital photo frame is one of the easiest ways to display your travel images. The latest generation of digital photo frames are Wi-Fi enabled and make it easy to link to popular social media and cloud-storage services without a big time commitment. Nixplay , for example, has free-standing and wall-mounted frames that connect to Dropbox , Google Photos , Facebook and Instagram .

The Nixplay mobile app unlocks more features, including collection curation, viewing preferences and sharing options. Digital frames also make great gifts for less tech-savvy family members from whom you’re socially distanced. You can create a dedicated email address so you and other family members can send photos directly to their frame.

A photo book overlays several other travel documents, including a map, a postcard from West Africa, and two other books

2. Create a photo book of your past vacations

Instead of swiping through your travel photos on your phone, turn them into real page turners with a photo book. They can be organized by theme, color or by specific trips. No matter how they are curated, make sure to pick only the images you really love. Fewer photos will have maximum impact on the page, but you break up the book with collages of smaller images, too.

While services like Blurb , Mixbook , Printique , Costco , Mpix , Shutterfly , and Artifact Uprising have templates and tools that will help automate the process, they don’t always populate the layout in a way that makes sense.

Here’s some advice from Steph Lehman, a photo book editor and graphic designer for Far-Country Press , an independent book publisher based in Helena, Montana: “I like many options to work with for subjects and locations, including different orientations, color schemes, choices for usage as main images or accent photos, etc.”

3. Experiment with unexpected print surfaces

Society6 is an online marketplace for artists who sell their artwork printed on a variety of media, from more traditional framed prints to all kinds of home décor items and consumer goods. Anyone can join, which means you can upload your own travel photos and even make money selling them if you’re looking for a side hustle.

Don’t expect a windfall since you’ll probably want to buy all the cool products adorned with your travel photos. Among other things, you can beautify your home office with a photo calendar, enhance your daily meditation with a printed yoga mat and drift off to sleep snuggled under a custom-designed comforter.

There are all kinds of online printing services with unique products on which to print, including lampshades ( Zazzle ), wood boards ( PhotoBarn ), metal ( Artbeat Studios ), acrylic ( Mpix ) and peel-and-stick fabric ( SnapBox ).

A couple sit on a warm brown leather sofa in front of a wooden coffee table. A cat sits in the foreground looking towards a wall of framed photos

4. Go big with a wall mural or photo wall

It may feel like your world has shrunk a little, but your travel photos can be larger than life. Photo wall murals can make you feel like you’re sleeping in a Scandinavian forest or dining on a white-sand beach at dusk. Murals Your Way , for example, will take your photo and wall dimensions and create custom wallpaper with a water-activated adhesive backing.

Kelsey Miller, a copy editor based in Chicago, likes to find unique ways for displaying images. She went the DIY route to save some money on a photo wall in her living room. “The image on my wall is a cloth tapestry I purchased from Society6 ,” she says. “I cut it into 12 pieces with a rotary cutter (for a super clean cut), then used a cornstarch/water paste to ‘glue’ them to the back of 12 square frames from IKEA. The best part is that I can peel off the tapestry and the cornstarch/water paste washes off with soap and water, so I can always replace it.”

Photo walls can also be groupings of many different travel photos like the one Cleveland art director Stephanie Park has in her home. “They are from all different places, but I’ve made them cohesive by printing them in black and white. They are in silver frames of all different sizes and styles.”

5. Don’t underestimate the power of a classic print

Printing out your photos isn’t a new idea, but chances are most of your images have stayed trapped in the digital realm. Give your memories some space in the real world and blow them up to appreciate the details on traditional photo paper. “Do your research before you print,” says Vincent McCracken of Mpix , the online arm of Miller’s Professional Imaging , the largest professional photo lab in the United States.

“While drugstores or big box stores might be a convenient way to print your photos, some use cheap paper and your color will vary widely from print to print.” Mpix uses certified archival quality papers and has in-house experts that personally review photos to ensure perfect color on every print. Their standard E-surface paper, which has a pearl finish that you commonly see in wedding albums, reduces glare, which you would normally get from printing on glossy paper.

5. Think outside the frame

There are all kinds of non-traditional ways to show off your travel photos on a wall. You can spend hours on Pinterest and other social media sites exploring all the possibilities. Some of my favorite ideas for exhibiting travel photos include wooden hanger frames , fairy string lights with clips , postcard racks and vintage luggage tags . Finally, if you’re one of those people who hoarded toilet paper at the onset of Covid-19, you can turn the empty cardboard rolls into frames , too.

When I’m not travelling, one of the things that keeps me sane is surrounding myself with travel inspiration in all forms, whether it’s obsessively reading blogs or adding worldly touches to my home decor ( like this stupidly adorable savings bank shaped like a suitcase ).

And so, in the spirit of treating roamsickness with more travel dreams (probably a terrible idea but idk I’m not a doctor), here’s a roundup of some of the most beautiful and wickedly awesome  travel-related DIY projects that I could scour on the interwebs.

Pin these ideas for later:

1. Dazzling light-up world map

Through an absolutely genius use of Christmas lights, this beautiful map by Hazel and Ruby showcases where you’ve been in the world and is brilliantly customizable and simple to create. Bonus points for their lovely travel-themed display, and sweet globe collection.

2. DIY Vintage Pushpin Map

This simple and tasteful way to showcase your wanderlust is absolutely perfect. I am in  love  with DIY Vintage Pushpin Map from Mountain Modern Life  because it’s minimalist enough to avoid tackiness, while still showing off your love of travel and all the places you’ve been. I can’t wait to put one of these up on my wall!

3. Personalized photo map

This adorable photo map from Adventurista AZ is so cute, it almost makes me want to vomit!  Seriously, can you handle the nauseating sweetness? Admittedly, this is a genius idea that I wish I had come up with first, but this one’s no doubt going on my (ahem *secret*) travel-themed wedding Pinterest board

4. Miniature map magnets

These mini map magnets from Surviving a Teacher’s Salary are not just adorable, but also rather classy (like a posh chihuahua having high tea). They can be made in just a few minutes, so they’re ideal for a quick and easy gift for that travel lover in your life.

An arsty way to put your best photos, memories, stubs and more on display! This tutorial from Kelly Purkey shows you how to do it. Although I think the 20 euros in the corner here would be better spent on waffles.

Ahhh I loved this post! These are such great ideas! My favourites are the personalised photo map and the travel keepsake boxes… How cute! Amazing ways to keep our travel memories alive 🙂 x

This is absolutely amazing ! I loved the one where you attach photos to the countries that you visited! I will definitely try it out!

Great stuff! My daughter’s party theme this year is travel (she’s 4 and has been traveling all over the world!), and I might use some of these ideas. Thanks for sharing!

What an awesome theme for a birthday party!! I hope you take plenty of photos and blog about it 🙂 Can’t wait to see how it all turns out.

This is awesome! I love the photo wall, I’ve been collecting postcards as o go so that when I finally settle for more than 6 months I can do that! Great post 🙂

Thanks, Lauren! Yes isn’t the photo wall gorgeous? I used to collect postcards too but these days I prefer to just take photos of my own that I really love. My plan is to one day print my favourites out, frame them and make a massive gallery wall. So many ideas!! 🙂

Omg stop as soon as I have a home again after this trip I’m doing ALL OF THESE. I’m so stoked! Loved this post!!

What a great post! These are some great craft ideas… Totally pinning for later 😉 Thank you!

I love the travel jars – I actually started doing something very similar myself but with smaller craft jars. When I was about to leave the UAE where I had been living and working for eight months, I took some of the sand from our beach and our volleyball pitch and kept a few teeny tiny shells. I also looked after our fish tanks and had a pet hermit crab: when he met his final end, I kept his claw (possibly slightly weird?!) and the operculum from one of our snails that the before mentioned hermit crab ate, and stuck them all in the jar. I also had some absolutely tiny glass bottles for using in jewellery craft, and I put sand and two miniscule shells in them, and gifted them to my team before I left 🙂

Wow what a thoughtful and beautiful goodbye gift!! Those sound really beautiful, and such a good way to make use of souvenirs that would otherwise sit and collect dust. I’m guilty of hoarding random bits wherever I go, so to make them into something decorative would at least make my hoarding habit productive haha.

oh wow! love these ideas:)

Happy to hear that, Tanja!! Hope you get to try a few out.

Love this post! Definitely pinning it on my board “After Travel”. 🙂 How cute is the map and travel shelf?! Will be doing that myself! Once. If I have time. Love the wooden travel map as well, and the gallery wall of course! So many great ideas, so little time. Thanks for this awesome collection of great travel related DIY ideas!

An ‘After Travel’ board is such a good idea!! I find that surrounding myself with travel memories/travel-inspired decor helps a lot with post-holiday blues… that and obsessive Pinteresting of course haha.

oh my god!!! those are so amazing! love all of them so much! now i’ll need a bigger home to fit all of them into my place 😀 I actually do have a travel diy project as well where i live. it is a string art map pinned on my wall!

Oooh I’ve seen some of those online. They’re cool as well!! My friend has a corkboard map with custom location pins. It’s really neat.

I love these! 4 5 and 6 are my favourites! #6 is such a great way to store all though travel bits and bobs! ❤

So hard to pick favourites! But yes those ones are great… and honestly so simple and genius. I have tons of random things I’ve collected over my travels so it’s always good to find ideas on how to put them to use (rather than have them collect dust).

I love the ideas and I’m gonna save some of those for our future apartment decoration! I wish we had tons of old suitcases so I could make a coffee table for every single room!

Hahah that was my thought too… “Dang where do I buy vintage suitcases in bulk?” Happy crafting!! 🙂

Nice and inspiring post! I really love the globe :-).

Thanks Kimberley! Happy you liked it 🙂

Loving the ideas! I started doing a travel scrapbook about all my past travels 🙂

Ahh I used to love scrapbooking! I have a massive collection of papers and stickers but haven’t really sat down to make anything in the past few years. I should definitely get back into it.

So I’ve read this just as I’m settling in for a full day of work… Now all I can think about is travel and how much I want all of these things in my life… I applaud you for your distraction worth and wanderlust inducing post! Now, which should I make first? ;-P

Choosing is too tough so I would go with… all of them 😉

I love all of these ideas!

Thanks for reading, Rachel! 🙂

Whoa!!! I can’t wait to have a home base so I can do some of these wonderful maps haha

Haha cool map decor is one of the very few things that makes a travel blogger actually want a home base 😛

You made such an awesome list! I am definitely going to try atleast some of these out. You actually gave me a healthy amount of ideas for home- decor!

So many great ideas. Need to do that suitcase table

Wow some fantastic ideas here. Thanks. I already put pins in my map of the world but I love the idea of the luggage labels with the photos. I was wondering how to attach photos to the places in a nice way. I have now found my way. Another which jumped out at me is the suitcase table. So beautiful. Thanks you so much for sharing these wonderful ideas.

Some fantastic ideas here Christina! I love the idea of the keepsake boxes. They would be wonderful to look through years later.

These ideas are all so perfect I just want to do them all! I think I’ll start with the Postcard Travel Journal 🙂

I only need to decide now what project to start first! Love your collection of ideas and have shared on my fb page for my travel loving readers also 🙂 Annette

Thanks for sharing, Annette! 🙂

So many great ideas! Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome! Thanks for reading 🙂

These are so cute!! I have a map and postcard obsession.

Haha same here! hope you got a few good ideas for future projects 🙂

Love these ideas!!

I love these ideas! My husband has been collecting globes for decades (think about that – he’s pretty old) and I am going to use these ideas to give his office some pizzazz. Here’s my question: Where do you even get maps these days? Everything is on the internet, even though I love maps. If you have suggestions, I would love to know. Thanks. Jean Ann

Hey Jean, that is awesome! He must have such a huge collection by now. RE: The maps – depending on what kind of maps you’re looking for, you can easily buy them online. Amazon would be a good bet I think!

Hey Christina your blogs are awesome! I can see you have 74k shares of this post on pinterest! Congrats!! Can you guide me on how you do such amazing work on pinterest?

Whether you are looking for living room wall ideas that are classic or contemporary, you'll find plenty of inspiration here

The very best living room wall ideas include statement accent wall ideas and beautiful paint ideas to suit every home's style – and we have included a ton of added-value design advice, too.

So whether your living room layout is long, open-plan, or on the smaller side, there are looks to suit. Plus, of course, we have catered to a wide variety of styles, color preferences, and budgets, and, as ever, there are living room wall ideas you can adopt quickly – no entire renovation needed.

These are our favorite living room ideas for walls – we've added in-depth advice from well-known designers and our own team of experts, too, so that you know how to design a living room wall that you will love for years to come.

<p> Bringing the outdoors in by having green walls in your home is always a good idea; the nod to nature will create a calm atmosphere however busy the space, so integrating the color into a well-used living room works just as well as in a spa-style bathroom.                    </p> <p> Green room ideas are also said to inspire creativity and spontaneity, making them ideal for your living room walls. </p>

1. Create an accent wall with art

Looking for living room art ideas for accent walls to give your living room focus? If you are considering a display of pictures and paintings in a living room, one way to really make it sing out is by painting the wall behind it a bold shade that's a total contrast to the colors within the artwork.

This series of abstract prints set against a dark green living room wall offers a contemporary take on the gallery wall ideas of yesteryear. Sparse accessories and the clean lines of the furniture add to the modern flavor of the room.

<p> Adding a statement wall mural is a fabulous way to embrace colorful living room ideas. </p> <p> According to Scarlett Blakey, founder of Ophelia Blake Interior Design, 'the bespoke nature of a mural' is a favorite among designers who have the ability to 'make a space feature relevant, whether it's lifestyle or customer-focused.' </p> <p> 'You're also able to produce one-off pieces – providing complete individuality and exclusivity,' she adds. 'This can be preferential if you're wanting to create a high-pact space that is also memorable.' </p>

2. Add definition to a plain room with a mural

Adding a statement wall mural is a fabulous way to embrace colorful living room ideas.

According to Scarlett Blakey, founder of Ophelia Blake Interior Design, 'the bespoke nature of a mural' is a favorite among designers who have the ability to 'make a space feature relevant, whether it's lifestyle or customer-focused.'

'You're also able to produce one-off pieces – providing complete individuality and exclusivity,' she adds. 'This can be preferential if you're wanting to create a high-pact space that is also memorable.'

<p> Using texture in interior design is an integral part of a successful living room scheme – and textural living room wallpaper ideas are a great way to add a three-dimensional element to modern interiors.                    </p> <p> Knock back the contemporary overload by creating a sympathetic backdrop for an eclectic furniture or styling mix. Grass paper, available in a wide range of natural and vivid shades, is a perfect way to inject some mid-century modern decor style into an interior.                     </p>

3. Introduce depth and dimension with a textural wallpaper

Using texture in interior design is an integral part of a successful living room scheme – and textural living room wallpaper ideas are a great way to add a three-dimensional element to modern interiors.

Knock back the contemporary overload by creating a sympathetic backdrop for an eclectic furniture or styling mix. Grass paper, available in a wide range of natural and vivid shades, is a perfect way to inject some mid-century modern decor style into an interior.

<p> Circles, ovals and rectangles are all classically pleasing mirror shapes – but don’t be afraid to color outside the lines. Uneven, asymmetrical and positively weird shapes are a key contemporary mirror trend, so feel free to get a wiggle on. Look for mirrors with amorphous, globular shapes, or for slightly stretched versions of traditional shapes, like this bowed mirror.                    </p>

4. Add color with a paint job

Painting your walls – and around your living room fireplace – is an easy way to transform a room and when you inevitably get bored with your chosen color in years to come, it is an easy refresh job.

Gathering together lots of paint cards is a good place to start and, as many cards and brochures now feature ‘complementary’ shades, they’ll also help you to find accent and toning colors, too. If in doubt, look to the color wheel for advice and inspiration. From bold, dramatic palettes to soothing tonal combinations, using a color wheel is fail-safe way to guarantee decorating success.

<p> Wood is a key material choice for a mid-century modern living room – and if you want to replicate a true Mad Men aesthetic, look no further than wall panelling.                    </p> <p> When designing a living room, fitting wall panelling horizontally will make a room feel wider or longer, making it a great trick for small spaces.                    </p> <p> Plus, panelling for walls can be a work of art in itself – it needn't be solely architectural. </p>

5. Bring warmth with wall paneling

From intricate fretwork and simple rustic boards to traditional panels and stately solid wood, decorative wall panelling offers its own distinctive style.

Panelling is a useful way of introducing warmth and character to a living room – there is something undeniably cozy about being surrounded by wood. In a contemporary environment, panelling is an excellent way of framing large, flat surfaces, while also depth and dimension to a lifeless room.

<p> If you are a keen collector or art connoisseur, then neutral living rooms provide the perfect backdrop for a prestigious gallery wall or collection.                    </p> <p> 'Knowing what overall ambiance you are aiming to achieve in your home helps when creating a bespoke selection, and the relationship between the artwork and its surroundings plays a central role when designing the desired atmosphere,' advises Federica Barretta, director of Opera Gallery London </p> <p> Here, the addition of rough and coarser textures like reclaimed wood, velvet and terracotta have 'visual weight' and create a cozy, rustic aesthetic in this otherwise predominantly pale neutral living room. </p>

6. Create a gallery wall worth showing off

Investing in cherished art is the simple part, but creating a display you can be proud to show off, can be somewhat perplexing.

Take the confusion out of displaying art by starting with a neutral living room scheme. Play around with the layout of your frames before hanging; try out evenly spaced rows and columns, or experiment with asymmetrical formations for something a little different. Opt for a tonal color palette for a cohesive look that wouldn't look out of place in an art gallery.

<p> Is the feature wall a thing of the past? Of course not, it's just a case of re-defining it by finding new ways to create a lasting statement.                    </p> <p> A larger-than-life wallpaper will breathe personality into the home as well as help to zone a large or open plan space. Live with the sample for a while to make sure you’re happy before you commit.                    </p> <p> For bold, colorful prints, pairing it with a white or neutral paint on the other walls will allow it to shine, or tone it down by choosing a paint color that features in the design. </p>

7. Install a wow factor feature wallpaper

Is the feature wall a thing of the past? Of course not, it's just a case of re-defining it by finding new ways to create a lasting statement.

A larger-than-life wallpaper will breathe personality into the home as well as help to zone a large or open plan space. Live with the sample for a while to make sure you’re happy before you commit.

For bold, colorful prints, pairing it with a white or neutral paint on the other walls will allow it to shine, or tone it down by choosing a paint color that features in the design.

<p> Books can bring culture to any room; as Cicero once said, 'A room without books is like a body without a soul.' Not only that, but a beautiful and organized display is often very revealing of the character of the owner, so display your ever-growing collection with pride.                    </p> <p> Creating your very own library in a living room with a built-in wall-to-wall design works in both classic and contemporary homes alike. If you are at a loss for where to store your treasured collection, alcoves are an obvious place to add floor-to-ceiling storage. Even if your room is on the small side, a bespoke solution can utilize the full height of the space. </p>

8. Invest in beautiful book storage

Books can bring culture to any room; as Cicero once said, 'A room without books is like a body without a soul.' Not only that, but a beautiful and organized display is often very revealing of the character of the owner, so display your ever-growing collection with pride.

Creating your very own library in a living room with a built-in wall-to-wall design works in both classic and contemporary homes alike. If you are at a loss for where to store your treasured collection, alcoves are an obvious place to add floor-to-ceiling storage. Even if your room is on the small side, a bespoke solution can utilize the full height of the space.

<p> By reflecting natural light back into the living room, a mirrored wall is a wonderful way to create the illusion of extra space and help make your room feel both bigger and brighter. </p> <p> Although introducing a mirror or two is ideal for opening up small living rooms, an oversized mirror– or mirrored feature wall – is also a must-have addition for larger rooms looking to achieve statement style and grandeur with ease.                    </p> <p> As a result, mirrors are a superpower style secret that should be celebrated throughout the home, from the walls of your living room to luxe lounge spaces, and even the entrance to your home. </p>

9. Enhance your space with a wall of mirrors

By reflecting natural light back into the living room, a mirrored wall is a wonderful way to create the illusion of extra space and help make your room feel both bigger and brighter.

Although introducing a mirror or two is ideal for opening up small living rooms, an oversized mirror– or mirrored feature wall – is also a must-have addition for larger rooms looking to achieve statement style and grandeur with ease.

As a result, mirrors are a superpower style secret that should be celebrated throughout the home, from the walls of your living room to luxe lounge spaces, and even the entrance to your home.

<p> Getting living room color schemes just right is vital because this is the room where we spend most of our time.                    </p> <p> Choosing which colors to decorate your living room walls with can be daunting – partly because there are so many options available. For a living room room full of  energy, create a scheme that hinges on the decorating with primary colors – but bear in mind that even in small doses, such as in the neutral scheme above, they can have real impact.                    </p> <p> Feeling braver? Bold blue walls instantly add a cosseting effect to a space, making the room feel more inviting yet spacious. </p>

10. Get creative with color choices

Getting living room color schemes just right is vital because this is the room where we spend most of our time.

Choosing which colors to decorate your living room walls with can be daunting – partly because there are so many options available. For a living room room full of  energy, create a scheme that hinges on the decorating with primary colors – but bear in mind that even in small doses, such as in the neutral scheme above, they can have real impact.

Feeling braver? Bold blue walls instantly add a cosseting effect to a space, making the room feel more inviting yet spacious.

<p> Fitting floating shelves into alcoves is a brilliant way to create additional storage or display space without encroaching on valuable floor space, plus, it can be a lovely way to highlight an architectural feature within a room.                    </p> <p> Alternatively, recessed shelving can be fitted retrospectively into a room. While this will reduce the overall footprint, the result will be a streamlined space which feels airy and spacious. </p> <p> Made from solid timber, these alcove shelves help bring texture and warmth to this white living room design by Kitesgrove, as do the metallic wall lights and marbled fireplace. </p>

11. Make the most of alcoves

Whether newly installed or forming part of the original architecture, living room alcoves make great features within a space. From housing furniture to framing artwork, there's plenty of ways to integrate alcoves into your interior design. Fitting shelving into alcoves is particularly effective, providing space to create curated displays.

‘Incorporating recessed shelving into a living room adds depth to the space and a focal feature to introduce contrasting living room paint ideas or finishes to the room. This creates distinctive niches to display books, artwork and plants that can evolve over time,' says Katie Lion, senior interior designer at Kitesgrove.

<p> Decorating with art will instantly elevate living room walls and is a brilliant way to create a focal point which will instantly draw your eye. When it comes to what type of art to choose think big says interior designer Annie Elliott. </p> <p> 'Most of us have artwork that's on the small side, but we need to think bigger! Pieces that are a minimum of 32 inches wide are always great to have,' says Annie Elliot. 'Over a fireplace, it's so much more appealing to hang a painting rather than a mirror or a TV. Over a sofa, one huge painting or a mixed media gallery wall can be show stopping.' </p>

12. Create a focal point with art

Decorating with art will instantly elevate living room walls and is a brilliant way to create a focal point which will instantly draw your eye. When it comes to what type of art to choose think big says interior designer Annie Elliott.

'Most of us have artwork that's on the small side, but we need to think bigger! Pieces that are a minimum of 32 inches wide are always great to have,' says Annie Elliot. 'Over a fireplace, it's so much more appealing to hang a painting rather than a mirror or a TV. Over a sofa, one huge painting or a mixed media gallery wall can be show stopping.'

<p> When planning living room shelving made-to-measure, bespoke joinery is often the best way to make the most of your space, plus consider a mix of closed and open shelving as this will help balance practical storage with space for decorative displays.                    </p> <p> ‘It’s important to make a space feel relaxed and not sterile or unliveable. Try to create storage for the pieces that don’t need to be on show but make sure to celebrate and show off the things that bring you joy,’ says Camilla Clarke, creative director at Albion Nord. ‘We like to mix high level open shelving with concealed storage. Open shelving to display books, art, photos and concealed storage to hide things that don’t need to be on show.’ </p> <p> If you have a large expanse of shelving hanging a graphic artwork is a great way to conceal eyesores like cables whilst also creating a visual break.                    </p>

13. Keep organized with built-in storage

Built-in living room storage tailored to your architecture is the best way to make the most of the space. When thinking about what type of storage to go for, consider a mix of closed and open says Camilla Clarke, creative director at Albion Nord.

‘It’s always useful to have some form of concealed storage to hide the non-everyday items that you might not want on show,’ says Clarke. ‘We like to mix high level open shelving with concealed storage. Open shelving to display books, art, photos and concealed storage to hide things that don’t need to be on show.'

'Try and create concealed storage for AV & electrical items below the TV instead of having these on show. We like to celebrate books with big pieces of open joinery. Books should always be visible to invite you in to read them.’

A cleverly positioned artwork hung over built-in shelves can be a great way to conceal clutter whilst providing a visual break to a large expanse of shelving.

'Remember art doesn’t always need to be hung on the center of the wall it can rest on top of tables or layered next to sculptures or on bookshelves and joinery,' adds Clarke.

<p> Light living room ideas should be bright, spacious and welcoming – not dull, dreary or dated. </p> <p> There are a plethora of sophisticated ways to enhance a light space, so dress your living room with best paint ideas, lighting tips and earthy neutral tones for a space that is airy, inviting and oh so stylish. </p>

14. Add multi-functional wall lighting

When it comes to how to plan living room lighting it's important to layer different types of lighting as part of a well-designed lighting scheme so that you have the right light for different moods and tasks.

'You will of course have your main light source such as a pendant to provide general lighting, but supplementing this with wall lights, table and floor lamps will allow you to change the atmosphere easily,' says Shalini Misra, interior designer and founder, Shalini Misra Ltd and The Design Buzz.

As well as providing a lovely warm and welcoming mood, wall lights are also ideal for highlighting works of art or architectural details on living room walls.

'One of my key recommendations for art installations is lighting, try highlighting artwork with a picture light or sconces either side. Make sure any ceiling lights do not obstruct the lines of sight of the artwork,' explains interior designer Julia Dempster.

<p> If you're confident with color, why not opt for living room accent wall color ideas that bring zest and vitality to it? </p> <p> 'This space was really created for living, gathering with the family and celebrating life's milestones. Since green is often associated with life in literature, this vibrant hue provided the perfect foundation,' says New York based interior designer Phillip Thomas. 'It looks beautiful at all times of day, brightening up a weekend brunch and glowing from within at night.' </p> <p> In addition to the color of your accent wall, it's also worth thinking about the paint finishes, as they can impact the look and feel of the room. 'I always love a high gloss lacquer finish in a living room, as it adds lightness and luxury to the space,' says Phillip. </p>

15. Make a statement with lime green

Well-chosen paint ideas are quick and easy way to transform the mood of a room and for an uplifting, energetic space you can't go wrong with vibrant green.

'This space was really created for living, gathering with the family and celebrating life's milestones. Since green is often associated with life in literature, this vibrant hue provided the perfect foundation,' says New York-based interior designer Phillip Thomas. 'It looks beautiful at all times of day, brightening up a weekend brunch and glowing from within at night.'

When selecting living room paint ideas, it's also important to think about finish as well as color. 'I always love a high gloss lacquer finish in a living room, as it adds lightness and luxury to the space. Plus the mirror-like effect can help your space feel bigger,' adds Thomas.
