The Trek 100 Riders Take On New Challenges

  • August 25, 2020

Riding for Hope

The Trek 100 Ride for Hope is a long-standing tradition and our largest fundraiser supporting childhood cancer and related blood disorders research. The event has been held annually in June since 1990, contributing over $16.3 million dollars to the MACC Fund’s mission since the event’s inception.

The Trek 100 has rides for everyone, from young children to hardcore cyclists; offering four ride distances of 17, 34, 66, and 100 miles over the gently rolling terrain in Jefferson, Columbia and Dodge Counties. The entire day is a celebration of teamwork, coming together to conquer the course and support research for childhood cancer and related blood disorders.

Riding from Home

With the ongoing situation with COVID-19, the planning committee for the event determined that the safest course of action was to take the event virtual. The ride-from-home option offered a unique opportunity for riders around the globe to set their own course and be a part of the event in an entirely new way.

Although the riders faced new challenges, they came together in true camaraderie to raise funds for a cause close to all our hearts: childhood cancer and related blood disorders research.

Collen Moran, MACC Fund Development Officer and Trek 100 Ride Director, had this to say about the power of the event:

“Riders from across the country and around the globe participated in the Trek 100 Ride for Hope – Ride from Home on Saturday, August 22nd, proving, once again, that the Trek 100 is more than just a bike ride. It is a powerful day of hope for children with cancer and their families.

So many of our events have been canceled or postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and our mission of funding childhood cancer research has taken a significant hit. But children are still being diagnosed with pediatric cancer and related blood disorders every day and our need to support research is more important than ever.

We can’t thank our riders and their supporters enough for their commitment to continue to raise money for critically important research and to help us find a cure for this horrific disease.”

Fight Until the End

Childhood cancer is the leading disease-related cause of death in children. With partners like John Burke, owner of Trek Bicycle Corporation, our mission is to fund research for childhood cancer and related blood disorders. We would like to thank all the riders and team members who stuck with us throughout these tumultuous times, for no other reason than wanting to make a difference and be a part of something bigger. Over 2,058 riders signed up for Trek 100, from countries around the globe, and we want to say a special thanks to them for achieving their donation goals, all of which benefits the MACC Fund and our mission.

In the end, the Trek 100 Ride from Home raised over $753,450 for the MACC Fund! If you haven’t ridden before, please join us at the Trek 100 Ride for Hope in 2021.

Olivia AKA Brandon's Time as a Catfish on 'The Circle 6' Is a Learning Experience

Life as a catfish is hard. But at least Brandon is learning something from it!

The Big Picture

  • Brandon enters The Circle as Olivia to be more engaging, but struggles to embody her, causing skepticism.
  • The Catfish twist of the season helps Brandon as Olivia stay under the radar while learning about himself.
  • Playing as Olivia, Brandon becomes intuitive towards the AI Max, showcasing personal growth in the game.

Brandon Baker decided to enter The Circle as his beautiful blonde friend Olivia. He felt she would be more engaging of a character for the other players to interact with on the reality social experiment . But early on, Brandon struggled to play the part as he didn't know how to not only tap into her but interact as a beautiful girl. Paired with a generic photo, his generic approach caused his fellow players to start becoming a tad skeptical. Thanks to the AI twist of the season, Brandon as Olivia is floating under the radar all while learning a bit about himself.

Debuting in 2020 in the United States, The Circle came from the series of the same name and format from the UK that instantly became a top reality hit for Netflix. The premise is simple. The Circle is a social media-inspired game where anybody can be anybody. Players are tucked away in their own cozy one-bedroom apartment, isolated from one another and the outside world, where their only interactions are made through The Circle, a one-of-a-kind social media app, is where they chat, share photos, and play games that help solifidy alliances, relationships, and romances. All while never seeing the person behind the screen. The main twist of the show is that players can opt to play as themselves or go in as a catfish.

How does this play a factor in the game? Well, the players will rate one another from first to last, where the highest-rated players will become influencers and have the ability to block a player from the game, ultimately leading to their elimination from the game. Now in its sixth season , the social game has had its fair share of twists and turns, celebrity players, and beloved players that proved this game is all dependent on the individuals playing.a

Participants enter a unique competition where they communicate only through a social media platform, isolated from each other. They must choose to either present their true selves or create a persona, as they vie to be voted the most popular by their peers and win a substantial cash prize.

Brandon's True Colors Are Coming Out as a Catfish

Brandon Baker is a 34-year-old nursing assistant hailing from Columbus, Ohio. And if it wasn't clear he loved his hometown, most of his wardrobe features Ohio State University insignia. With a voice that only The Circle could love, Brandon came into the game already self-deprecating, calling his appearance an adult Cabbage Patch Kid. With a mission to win, no matter what it takes, Brandon decided that he would not be playing as himself but as his co-worker, Olivia. He claims that he has the brains and personality, while Olivia has the body and gets the boys thirsty. Playing as a catfish is a common trend on The Circle , but everyone has their reasons for it.

Perhaps they're the Spice Girls and didn't want to get detected. Perhaps they are playing as their partner to prove a gender bias. Or maybe they're just former players who got a chance to return just to catfish the rest of The Circle . For Brandon, he was unsure if he could be someone who would engage with the rest of the players, so he opted for a facade. For him, this was his chance to be someone hot. That statement alone tells a lot about him and why he's chosen to play as his friend. This is a chance to be someone he dreams of being. He's pretending to be someone he's not. But pretending to be someone else is not as easy as it seems.

Every Season of Netflix's 'The Circle,' Ranked

Early on in the season, Brandon learned the hard way that every single decision you make in The Circle has consequences. With literally nothing to do but ponder, the players of the game tend to always be thinking and overanalyzing every word choice, photo selection, and interaction made. For Brandon, he was confident that he would ease in as Olivia, but in the first Circle chat, he was lost. The other players immediately overpowered the chat and when he did get a chance to speak as Olivia, his interactions were overly generic, causing the others to feel like they had already found a catfish in their midst. This caused immediate panic for Brandon, seemingly losing it on the first day. His tears were real. Viewers were granted an insight into how playing The Circle is not all fun and games.

Brandon is More Intuitive Toward Max Thanks to His Own Catfishing

For Season 6, The Circle decided to throw in a big twist that tossed confusion and anxiety into the mix. This season, a player named Max is actually an AI robot. Max, who does get the opportunity to live in one of the cute single apartments, is playing as a Midwest veterinary intern whose photo is of a guy with a dog. Why a dog? Well, the AI has revealed that photos with dogs receive 38% more likes. Of course, if you have an actual AI robot in the cast, you need someone who works directly with AI to be their opponent. Myles Reed is a 29-year-old AI Engineer from Los Angeles who is there as Max the AI robot's main rival. With the AI element coming into play this season, The Circle did reveal that there was a robot in the game, putting the players in a tizzy. The AI mechanic became the focus in the first block of episodes, changing the initial game play viewers were familiar with. The primary blocking did not go as typically played. Rather, the players were asked to rank who they feel is the most to least real.

With this element causing so much of a ruckus in the game, players like Brandon, who were struggling to start, found a new lease on life in the game. In fact, Brandon as Olivia happened to be the most in tune to the identity of Max. Perhaps it was his momentary time playing as a catfish himself that clued him into the lack of authenticity from Max. For Brandon, playing as Olivia displays a lot about the game at hand as well as society in general. With the makeup of The Circle as it stands, someone like Brandon, a boisterous gay man, may not have an immediate connection with the bros of the house, Myles, Kyle Fuller , and Caress Russell, who is catfishing as her younger brother Paul Russell , the artist behind the viral hit "Lil Boo Thang." By playing as the beautiful Olivia, Brandon is able to connect with the men of the house, using Olivia's appearance to his advantage. With a fear that Brandon playing as himself would not have a bond with the boys, Brandon was able to connect with all the players. He's even already fought for Steffi Hill the psychic medium, who has been enemy number 1 when it comes to whom the players think is the AI.

At this point, Brandon's growth as a person is evident in just a few quick episodes. Brandon is proving that The Circle isn't just for viewers' enjoyment, it is a sociological experiment that is a reflection of today. Many who aspire to play The Circle dream of having a chance to be someone else, but to be a successful catfish, it takes a lot more than a photo. By diving deep into the psyche of someone else, you're learning about the deepest part of yourself. Brandon may now be in a prime position to float far in the game. He's not at the top, nor is he a target as a catfish. Hopefully, Brandon can utilize his understanding of himself through the guise of Olivia to showcase a new way to win The Circle .

The Circle Season 6 is currently streaming on Netflix. New episodes are available every Wednesday.

Tech CEOs Say Ethical A.I. and Innovation Are ‘Two Sides of the Same Coin’

2024 TIME100 Summit

CEOs of start-ups and big tech companies spoke at the TIME100 Summit on Wednesday about innovating with artificial intelligence in an ethical way, just moments before a spirited debate on the future of the technology .

“Regulation and innovation are two sides of the same coin,” said Rosanne Kincaid-Smith, Group Chief Operating Officer of Northern Data Group, which is a signature partner of the TIME100 Summit. She added tech companies and industry leaders should work towards better regulation. “Not actively contributing through lobbying would be a huge miss for us,” she said.

Kincaid-Smith stressed the benefits of AI and suggested that questions about whether AI is “evil” and going to negatively impact the workforce are misguided. “We forget to remind ourselves that Artificial Intelligence is artificial. It’s not natural…It’s an artifact of our own learning, of human culture, of human history…so it’s incumbent on us to make sure it reflects the best of us,” she said.

Justina Nixon-Saintil, Vice President and Chief Impact Officer of IBM, shared IBM is investing more resources into climate modeling. IBM is working with NASA to build an AI foundation model to improve the speed, accuracy and accessibility of weather forecasting.

Mathias Wikström, CEO of Doconomy, which gives banks financial tools to drive global climate action, stressed that climate literacy is key to achieving climate justice.

The TIME100 Summit convenes leaders from the global TIME100 community to spotlight solutions and encourage action toward a better world. This year’s summit features a variety of speakers across a diverse range of sectors, including politics, business, health and science, culture, and more.

Speakers for the 2024 TIME100 Summit include actor Elliot Page, designer Tory Burch, Olympic medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad, WNBA champion A'ja Wilson, author Margaret Atwood, NYSE president Lynn Martin, comedian Alex Edelman, professor Yoshua Bengio, 68th Secretary of State John Kerry, actor Jane Fonda, and many more.

The TIME100 Summit was presented by Booking.com, Citi, Merck, Northern Data Group, Glenfiddich Single Malt Scotch Whisky, and Verizon.

2024 NFL Draft: TV schedule, start time, location and more

R ound 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft is set to kick off Thursday, April 25 from downtown Detroit, Michigan, marking their first-ever opportunity to host the NFL draft. Though the No. 1 overall pick is a foregone conclusion at this point, with USC quarterback Caleb Williams a presumed lock for the Chicago Bears, there’s plenty of other excitement in store, including the mystery of what the Pittsburgh Steelers will do with the 20th overall pick and how they’ll manage to address all their top needs.

It was an aggressive offseason from Steelers GM Omar Khan, with a total re-haul of the quarterback room, moving on from Kenny Pickett & Co. in favor of Super Bowl XLVIII champion Russell Wilson and promising dual-threat youngin’ Justin Fields. They traded away Diontae Johnson, a cornerstone of Pittsburgh’s offense since drafted back in 2015.

Now, heading into the draft, the Steelers will look to rebuild that offensive line, while adding depth at wide receiver opposite George Pickens and options at cornerback — no small task, given just how big those needs are. Here’s everything you need to know about when and how to watch the 2024 NFL Draft.

How and where to watch the 2024 NFL Draft

Fans will have several options with which to watch the 2024 NFL Draft, including live coverage on NFL Network, ABC, ESPN and ESPN Deportes. Live stream options include

Round 1: Thursday, April 25 starting at 8 p.m. ET

Rounds 2 and 3 : Friday, April 26 starting at 7 p.m. ET

Rounds 3-7 : Saturday, April 26 starting at 12 p.m. ET

How many picks do the Steelers have in the 2024 NFL Draft?

The Pittsburgh Steelers have seven picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, including four picks in the top-100.

Which NFL teams don’t have a first-round pick in 2024?

Three teams do not have a pick in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft:

  • Carolina Panthers
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Houston Texans

The Panthers traded what eventually became the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft (presumed Caleb Williams) in a trade pursuing 2023 No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young.

The Cleveland Browns traded their 2024 first-round pick in the trade to acquire Deshaun Watson from the Houston Texans. The Texans then traded that pick to the Minnesota Vikings in a pick swap in mid-March, receiving the No. 42 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, a sixth-round pick, and a 2025 second-round pick in exchange for pick No. 23 and No. 232 (seventh-round).

The Houston Texans do have control of their own first-round pick this year (No. 27), having traded that to the Cardinals during the 2023 NFL Draft in pursuit of edge Will Anderson Jr.

The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft began with a quarterback and ended with a wide receiver. Fitting for a night that was all about the offenses.

With their first No. 1 pick in 77 years, the Chicago Bears selected USC quarterback Caleb Williams, hoping to finally find their franchise QB. Williams set off a record run of six quarterbacks over the first 12 picks, including Jayden Daniels (Commanders, No. 2), Drake Maye (Patriots, No. 3), Michael Penix Jr. (Falcons, No. 8), J.J. Xavier Legette's fantasy comp is …

DK Metcalf ceiling with Rashid Shaheed floor. That gives you an idea of his potential, and Xavier Legette can add value in the return game. The Panthers haven't seen Terrace Marshall develop the way they want, and Jonathan Mingo struggled more than expected and might already be down the depth chart. Legette can step in as the No. 3 behind Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen, or even push Thielen in 2024 for the No. 2 role. He'll also help Bryce Young improve, though, Young needs to take a big step forward for all of the receivers to hold value. I could see Legette posting Josh Reynolds numbers (40-608-5) as a rookie, which makes him a WR5, but he has future WR3 potential, as early as 2025.

Nick Baumgardner

How Xavier Legette fits in Carolina

The Panthers move up one spot, entering the first round to snag help for Bryce Young in the form of big South Carolina X-receiver Xavier Legette. A 6-1, 222-pounder with 4.39 speed and a 40-inch vertical, Legette is a powerful blend of speed and explosion who looks and runs a lot like Seattle star DK Metcalf.

There are concerns, however. He made 71 catches for 1,255 yards and seven touchdowns last year. In his previous four years of college, Legette made 42 catches. He’s 23 and not a consistent route runner. Legette is a credible deep threat who will provide help as a returner, but there were better receivers here for Carolina in my opinion. Texas' Adonai Mitchell and Georgia's Ladd McConkey are two that come to mind.

Fantasy rushing production gets first-round upgrade without running backs

One of the main takeaways of the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is that no running backs were selected.

From a fantasy football perspective, this may seem like a downgrade for the ground game, but the reality is that nine of the first 29 picks of this draft were offensive linemen. In addition, Jayden Daniels is cut from a similar rushing quarterback mode as Lamar Jackson or Jalen Hurts and thus adds another potential dual-threat QB1 candidate.

Combine that with the heavy emphasis on upgrading offensive lines and it shows that NFL teams are still likely to continue the recent transition towards leaning on the ground game more and more often. Fantasy managers should keep this in mind when building teams, as RB values have increased recently due to this and are still likely to ascend.

Round 1, Pick 32: Panthers draft South Carolina WR Xavier Legette

(Photo: Getty Images)

The Carolina Panthers drafted South Carolina wide receiver Xavier Legette with the No. 32 pick after a trade with the Buffalo Bills.

The Athletic NFL Draft expert Dane Brugler on Legette: A four-year starter at South Carolina, Legette was an inside/outside receiver in offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains’ scheme (64.6 percent wide, 34.0 percent slot in 2023). A quarterback out of necessity as a senior in high school, he was raw when he joined the Gamecocks and didn’t break out until his fifth season (he and Malik Nabers were the only two SEC players to average more than 100 yards receiving per game in 2023).

Legette is at his best on runway routes (verticals, posts, crossers) or sweeps and end-arounds that get his long-striding acceleration going. He doesn’t consistently shake tight man coverage, but he will use his size to play strong through contact.

Overall, Legette needs to continue developing his route proficiency and tempo, but his film gives off DK Metcalf vibes, and he has the explosive speed and physicality to be a matchup weapon. He should be an immediate contributor on special teams before competing for starting reps outside.

Fantasy implications: Ricky Pearsall raises questions for San Francisco

The trade speculation — Brandon Aiyuk or Deebo Samuel — will start, and if one is moved, Ricky Pearsall can be a WR4 as a rookie with numbers similar to Darius Slayton (50-770-4). Honestly, the touchdown mark is low in this offense, but again, that's if Aiyuk or Samuel is gone. As it stands with both on the roster, Pearsall is a 2025 and beyond value. He's buried, as we haven't even mentioned the volume for Christian McCaffrey and George Kittle. Pearsall likely won't be more than a WR5/6 with around 35-40 receptions and 500+ yards, as the roster currently stands.

2024 NFL Draft and fantasy football: Winners, losers, every skill position pick, Caleb Williams and more

Grading Ricky Pearsall to 49ers at No. 31

This feels like either a reach or an insurance policy in case Brandon Aiyuk ends up getting dealt. Florida receiver Ricky Pearsall will make some tough catches and could wind up running plenty of interior routes alongside tight end George Kittle.

A five-year veteran with three seasons at Arizona State and his final two at Florida, Pearsall (6-1, 189) has built a reputation for his toughness and ability to haul in difficult catches. Last year with the Gators, Pearsall caught 65 balls for 965 yards (14.8 yards per catch) and four scores. As a junior, Pearsall averaged 20.0 yards per catch (33-661) with five scores. At the combine, Pearsall ran a 4.41-second 40 and had a 42-inch vertical jump.

Trade! Bills move down again

The Buffalo Bills will not pick in the first round.

The Carolina Panthers — who did not have a pick entering the night — have moved up a pick to No. 32.

Round 1, Pick 31: 49ers draft Florida WR Ricky Pearsall

(Photo: Jonathan Bachman / Getty Images)

The San Francisco 49ers selected Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall with the No. 31 pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Pearsall: A two-year starter at Florida, Pearsall was schemed across the formation in head coach Billy Napier’s offense, doing most of his work (62.0 percent) from the slot. After three seasons at Arizona State, including time spent learning from Brandon Aiyuk in 2019, he moved on to Gainesville in 2022 and had a career season in ‘23, leading the Gators in receiving.

With his play speed and footwork, Pearsall earned the nickname “Slick Rick,” because of the rhythmic movements he uses to shake free in his routes or make a defender miss in the quick game. Though he can be outmuscled at times versus press or at the top of routes, he has Velcro hands and never shies from attacking throws that lead him into impending contact.

Overall, Pearsall wasn’t a home-run hitter on tape, but he is a reliable receiving option with the route quickness and ball skills to quickly become a favorite target for an NFL quarterback. He has the skill set and toughness to work inside or outside and return punts at the next level.

Nate Wiggins was the top-ranked corner on the Football GM Podcast, ahead of Quinyon Mitchell. He lands in Baltimore, which is a very good place for defensive players to land.

Round 1, Pick 30: Ravens draft Clemson CB Nate Wiggins

Round 1, Pick 30: Ravens draft Clemson CB Nate Wiggins

Getty Images

The Baltimore Ravens selected Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins with the 30th pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Wiggins: A two-year starter at Clemson, Wiggins was an outside cornerback in defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin’s scheme. An ascending player throughout his time with the Tigers, he combined for 25 passes defended in 23 games over the last two seasons and allowed just 43.9 percent completions when targeted in 2023. (Two of his three career interceptions came against Drake Maye).

Wiggins moves with quiet, controlled feet/hips to seamlessly transition out of breaks and accelerate to top gear (allowed only one catch of 20-plus yards on 41 targets in 2023). Though he needs to improve his consistency as a run defender, he shows tremendous effort in pursuit and had two chase-down forced fumbles that saved touchdowns in 2023 (Miami and North Carolina).

Overall, Wiggins’ slight frame and suspect play strength are legitimate concerns, but he is a fast and fluid athlete with the cover awareness and on-ball production to be a starting perimeter corner in the NFL. He projects as a longtime NFL starter with tools like those of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie.

Grading Tyler Guyton to Cowboys at No. 29

Dallas had a big hole at two spots — center and right tackle — and the Cowboys opted to fill the hole on the outside with Oklahoma tackle Tyler Guyton. It’s an upside move with Guyton, who could start at right tackle and perhaps flip to left tackle within time. Or, if he reaches his potential, he could form a solid tandem with Tyler Smith.

Still raw and developing, Guyton earned 15 career starts at TCU and Oklahoma before declaring for the draft. He started 13 games at right tackle and one at left tackle for the Sooners, while opening one game at tight end for TCU. Guyton (6-7 ½, 322) has the requisite body for an NFL tackle with 34 1/8-inch arms. It might take him some time, but his upside is immense,

Round 1, Pick 29: Cowboys draft Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton

Round 1, Pick 29: Cowboys draft Oklahoma OT Tyler Guyton

The Dallas Cowboys selected Oklahoma offensive tackle Tyler Guyton with the No. 29 pick.

The Athletic NFL Draft analyst Dane Brugler on Guyton: A two-year starter at Oklahoma, Guyton was the starting right tackle in former offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby’s inside-zone, gap-focused scheme. A basketball-focused athlete much of his life, he moved to the offensive line while at TCU and later developed into a starter for the Sooners, protecting Dillon Gabriel’s blindside at right tackle.

A nimble big man, Guyton stays square to pass rushers with balanced lateral steps to easily redirect, and he does a great job working into open space with remarkable range (NFL scout: “The OU coaches just marvel at him. They call him different than everyone else they’ve had.”). He stays controlled with his punch to be a sticky blocker, although his accuracy and fit entry are underdeveloped, and his overall timing is not yet a strength to his game.

Overall, Guyton is a work in progress in several areas and a steep learning curve should be expected for his rookie season, but he has the athletic tools and fundamental skills to develop into a high-level offensive tackle. He has the talent to play left or right tackle, although his comfort level is clearly on the right side. As long as he stays motivated and healthy, he will continue on an upward trajectory.

What Xavier Worthy brings to Kansas City

What Xavier Worthy brings to Kansas City

(Photo: Tim Warner / Getty Images)

Patrick Mahomes has yet to meet a player he can overthrow. We’ll see if Xavier Worthy gives him a run for his money. The Chiefs moved up from 32 to 28 to snag the fastest player in the draft in the form of the former Texas receiver. Worthy set the combine record with a 4.21 40-yard dash earlier this spring and will enter Kansas City’s offense with electric speed from the get-go.

This feels like a very good fit for Kansas City’s offense and for Mahomes in general, as Worthy is very dynamic with the ball in his hands. However, he’s also very small at just 165 pounds. Whether or not he’ll be able to hold up with a high catch volume deep into a season is a fair question. He can be inconsistent with his hands and his play strength will limit some of what he can do a the next level. It’s fair to wonder if Worthy was a first-rounder in this draft, especially with some of the talent on the board. But also tough to hate the fit.

Xavier Worthy's fantasy impact

I know what you're thinking. "The new Chiefs wideout is going to be amazing!" And I get it, especially as my comp for Worthy was DeSean Jackson, especially in his early days when he returned kicks as well. With the Chiefs having inconsistency at the position and Rashee Rice with a suspension looming, Worthy definitely has potential -- just be cautious not to overrate him as fantasy has done with many a wideout in the past. Nevertheless, Worthy has the ability to be their new No. 1, and that's even once Rice returns. Worthy posting a rookie line of 60-for-800 (or more) with a handful of touchdowns is within reach, and that makes him at least a WR4, not to mention the additional value if you score return yards.

Harvey Weinstein’s Conviction Was Fragile From the Start

New York’s highest court overturned a conviction on Thursday that tested how #MeToo cases could be tried.

Jodi Kantor has been reporting on Harvey Weinstein since 2017, when she and Megan Twohey revealed decades of abuse allegations against him.

  • April 25, 2024

The overturning of Harvey Weinstein’s New York sex crimes conviction on Thursday morning may feel like a shocking reversal, but the criminal case against him has been fragile since the day it was filed. Prosecutors moved it forward with risky, boundary-pushing bets. New York’s top judges, many of them female, have held rounds of pained debates over whether his conviction was clean.

“I’m not shocked,” said Deborah Tuerkheimer, a former Manhattan prosecutor who is now a law professor at Northwestern, in an interview. The issue of whether Mr. Weinstein’s trial was fair “is a really close question that could have gone either way.”

Outside the justice system, evidence of Mr. Weinstein’s sexual misconduct is overwhelming. After The New York Times revealed allegations of abuse by the producer in 2017, nearly 100 women came forward with accounts of pressure and manipulation by Mr. Weinstein. Their stories sparked the global #MeToo reckoning.

The Harvey Weinstein Appeal Ruling, Annotated

Read the ruling from New York’s top court that overturned the 2020 conviction of Harvey Weinstein on felony sex crime charges in Manhattan, with context and explanation by New York Times journalists.

But while Mr. Weinstein’s alleged victims could fill an entire courtroom, few of them could stand at the center of a New York criminal trial. Many of the horror stories were about sexual harassment, which is a civil violation, not a criminal one. Some were from out of state, especially California. Others fell beyond the statute of limitations. One of the original accusers was dropped from the trial because of allegations of police misconduct.

Manhattan prosecutors, under pressure for not pursuing charges earlier, made a series of gambles.

First, they proceeded with a trial based on only two victims, who accused him of sexually assaulting them but also admitted to having consensual sex with him at other times — a combination that many experts say is too messy to win convictions . To prove their case against Mr. Weinstein, who denies all allegations of non-consensual sex, the prosecutors had little concrete evidence.

So to persuade the jury, the lawyers turned to a controversial strategy that would ultimately lead to the conviction’s undoing. They put additional women with accounts of abuse by Mr. Weinstein — so-called Molineux witnesses — on the stand to establish a pattern of predation. The decision seemed apt for the moment: In a legal echo of the #MeToo movement, Mr. Weinstein was forced to face a chorus of testimony from multiple women.

The women’s testimony was searing, and when Mr. Weinstein was convicted in 2020, and then sentenced to 23 years in prison, it looked like the prosecutors had expanded the possibilities for holding sex offenders accountable.

“I did it for all of us,” Dawn Dunning , who served as a supporting witness in the trial, said in an interview afterward. “I did it for the women who couldn’t testify. I couldn’t not do it.”

But because New York law is open to interpretation on when those witnesses are allowed, the move risked violating a cardinal rule of criminal trials: Defendants must be judged on the acts they are being charged with.

That became the main basis for Mr. Weinstein’s repeated appeals of his conviction. For years, his lawyers have argued that his trial was fundamentally unfair, because it included witnesses who fell outside the scope of the charges. In addition to the alleged sexual assault victims, prosecutors brought in character witnesses who portrayed Mr. Weinstein as a capricious, cruel figure.

In 2022, a New York appeals court dismissed those concerns and upheld his conviction, after a vigorous debate by the judges. They wrote that the testimony from the additional witnesses had been instrumental in showing that the producer did not see his victims as “romantic partners or friends,” but that “his goal at all times was to position the women in such a way that he could have sex with them, and that whether the women consented or not was irrelevant to him.”

This February, when New York’s highest court heard the producer’s last-chance appeal, the proceedings did not garner much attention . But they felt quietly dramatic: Seven of the state’s highest judges, four of them women, were debating whether the man whose alleged offenses formed the cornerstone of the #MeToo movement had been treated fairly in court.

Today the court decided, with a majority that included three of those female judges, to throw out the conviction and order a new trial. Mr. Weinstein remains convicted in California and could be moved to prison there.

“We conclude that the trial court erroneously admitted testimony of uncharged, alleged prior sexual acts against persons other than the complainants of the underlying crimes,” the judges wrote in their decision on Thursday.

“No person accused of illegality may be judged on proof of uncharged crimes that serve only to establish the accused’s propensity for criminal behavior,” the opinion continued.

But the decision landed by the slimmest of majorities: 4 to 3, with stinging dissents from judges who said they feared the implications of the court’s ruling. “The majority’s determination perpetuates outdated notions of sexual violence and allows predators to escape accountability,” Judge Madeline Singas wrote, adding that witness rules had evolved to be more flexible. “By ignoring the legal and practical realities of proving a lack of consent, the majority has crafted a naive narrative.”

Reached by phone a few minutes after the court shared its decision, Ashley Judd, the first actress to come forward with allegations against Mr. Weinstein, was unwavering in her own judgment. “That is unfair to survivors,” she said of the ruling.

“We still live in our truth,” she said. “And we know what happened.”

The heated back-and-forth from the New York judges, and the early reaction to the decision, launched fresh debate about whether the ground rules for sexual misconduct convictions need to be updated.

“The #MeToo movement showed how important it is to have accounts from multiple accusers,” Ms. Tuerkheimer said. But witness rules — which are strict for a reason — can leave courtrooms an “alternate universe in which evidence relevant to sex crimes is often kept from the jury.”

“There’s a tension at the heart of it,” she said, “and prosecution in the #MeToo era will continue to deal with this dilemma.”
